The debate around Gojira's merch prices are a stark indicator of what it means to be a touring band in 2023

Gojira are on their biggest-ever tour of the UK right now, and their merch prices have got fans talking. But it's what's needed to be a band on the road in 2023.

Gojira have just kicked off the UK leg of their huge European tour alongside Alien Weaponry and Employed To Serve . A string of dates that have been a long time coming, previously scheduled to take place back at the start of 2022, they have also kickstarted a discussion online. Because of the band's merch prices. Twitter user @_chrisjones_  posted a photo from the merch desk at the band's show at Belfast's Ulster Hall on February 12, first stating, " 40 quid for a standard t-shirt at the Gojira gig tonight. I know times are tough for touring bands but bloody hell. Ulster Hall taking a large cut, I'm thinking."

Products that are available range from the aforementioned t-shirt for £40 to £50 for a longsleeve and £80 for a hoodie, all the way up to signed vinyl for £80 and art prints for £100. The conversation that has been instigated by this photo is fascinating, to say the least. On one hand, there are reactions such as, "Oh hell no. £25 tee is standard. £30 too much. £40 is mad " and, "That’s insane", but on the other, fans are also saying, "This is honestly pretty standard for large touring acts these days" and, "Because rising costs of touring don't apply to more well-known bands. These are absolutely standard prices in today's economic climate." One person has even noted that The Cure were selling their t-shirts on their recent tour for half the price at £20. The truth of the matter is that touring in 2023 is completely different to any other time that bands have been able to go out on the road. Firstly, this particular tour was rescheduled a whole 12 months later by the band because, as they stated, "Despite our best efforts to resume touring this month, the continued uncertainty in various territories has left us with no other choice but to reschedule the remaining dates of the tour as well." Changing a whole touring schedule doesn't come easy or cheap, on both the pockets and the mind. Additionally, the cost of living has gone up considerably in those 12 months as well. Things that would have been easily taken care of and a certainty before are now up in the air and a constant worry. All of that is heightened when you have to go out on the road for a living. And that's not just the band. That's crew, management, transport, everybody who is associated with Gojira on this tour is affected. Merchandise is the only way that a band is able to even consider breaking even in this climate, summed up perfectly by Stray From The Path's Craig Reynolds. And what happens if your favourite band doesn't make money on the road? They could come to your town, play a show and leave worse off than when they arrived. That's not sustainable in any way, is it? And if that happens, then touring may have to stop completely. This affects absolutely everyone. It's not an isolated case. The next gig that you go to may have the same price list. And the truth of the matter is that if you can afford to support a band, then you should do so. But at the same time, if you can't, then you can't. Here are the remaining dates on the band's tour:

MASTODON And GOJIRA Announce 'The Mega-Monsters Tour' With LORNA SHORE; BLABBERMOUTH.NET Presale

Teaming up for what promises to be an unforgettable jaunt of epic proportions, iconic Grammy Award -winning heavy rock band MASTODON will join forces with Grammy Award -nominated French heavy metal luminaries GOJIRA for "The Mega-Monsters Tour" , a massive co-headline tour across North America in 2023 along with special guests LORNA SHORE on all dates. It finds these two juggernauts taking over arenas and amphitheaters throughout the spring and summer, alternating closing sets each night.

A special BLABBERMOUTH.NET presale will begin on Wednesday, January 18 at 10:00 a.m. EST and end on Thursday, January 19 at 10:00 p.m. local time. When prompted, type in the presale code "HUSHED" to access tickets before the general public. General on-sale will be Friday, January 20 at 10 a.m. local time.

The tour kicks off at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon on April 18, stops at legendary venues such as the Forum in Los Angeles, California on April 21, and steamrolls through MASTODON 's hometown of Atlanta for their biggest Georgia headlining gig to date at the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre. The first leg concludes at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania on May 11. Meanwhile, the tour resumes with a second leg from August 9 through September 2.

MASTODON will hit the road in support of their critically acclaimed ninth studio album, "Hushed And Grim" . Meanwhile, GOJIRA are out supporting their seventh full-length album, "Fortitude" , which garnered a Grammy Award nomination in the category of "Best Metal Performance" for "Amazonia" . These two titans previously canvased North America together in 2014, and this reunion represents yet another major milestone in their respective careers.

Mastodon and Gojira Announce 2023 Co-Headlining Tour

Mastodon and Gojira have announce a 2023 co-headlining tour. Dubbed the Mega-Monsters Tour, it will take place this spring and summer across North America. Opening each date will be Lorna Shore. Find the full itinerary for the co-headlining tour below.

The Mega-Monsters Tour will begin on April 18 in Portland, Oregon, before the bands move across most of the West Coast and the South. After a brief break in June and July, Mastodon and Gojira will head back on the road, performing on the East Coast and Midwest before concluding the trek on September 2 in Greenwood Village, Colorado.

Mastodon released their latest and eighth album, Hushed and Grim , back in 2021. Before that, the Atlanta-based sludge metal band also dropped the compilation Medium Rarities . As for Gojira, their newest album also came out in 2021: Fortitude . It was the follow-up to the French avant-metal group’s 2016 full-length, Magma .

Mastodon + Gojira Announce Co-Headlining 2023 Tour With Lorna Shore

Mastodon and Gojira have just announced a co-headlining Mega Monsters North American tour with special guest Lorna Shore .

The first leg of the tour will stretch from April 18 through May 11 with the second leg kicking up on Aug. 9 with an end date set for Sept. 2.

Look for tickets to go on sale on Jan. 20 at 10AM local time with a pre-sale beginning on Jan. 18 at 10AM local time. Check the Mastodon website or  Gojira website for VIP packages and further ticketing information.

The tour unites three of the biggest forces in 21st century metal, Mastodon and Gojira being the established veterans while Lorna Shore have asserted themselves as a genuine breakout band in the 2020s with viral success thanks to their revolutionary brand of deathcore.

The co-headliners are each hitting the road in continued support of their 2021 albums —  Hushed & Grim (Mastodon) and  Fortitude (Gojira). Meanwhile, Lorna Shore will be touting last year's  Pain Remains , which Loudwire named the Album of the Year .

Mastodon and Gojira Announce 2023 North American Tour Dates

Mastodon and Gojira have shared a co-headlining 2023 tour for North America. This tour happens with 2 separate legs that take place throughout this spring, summer, and fall.

Also, during the tour Mastodon and Gojira support come from Lorna Shore a symphonic, blackened deathcore band.

“Hushed and Grim”, Mastodon ‘s most recent album, was released in 2021. In October, Gojira released a new track, “Our Time is Now.”

Gojira ‘s seventh studio album, Fortitude , is their seventh studio album. Roadrunner Records published the album on April 30, 2021. It was produced by lead vocalist Joe Duplantier, mixed by Andy Wallace, and mastered by Ted Jensen at the band’s New York City studio.

Gojira ‘s Fortitude debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200, selling 27,372 sales in its first week, surpassing Magma’s chart success.

The album debuted at the top of the Billboard Hard Rock Albums, Top Rock Albums, and UK Rock & Metal Albums charts. The album debuted at the top of the European charts, selling 9,900 sales in France in its first week. It peaked at number three on the ARIA charts. In its first week, Fortitude was the best-selling record in the United States.

Lorna Shore also released their fourth album “Pain Remains” last year, their first full-length.

The first leg of the Mega-Monsters Tour, named after the headlining band’s namesake beasts, takes up April 18th in Portland, Oregon, and concludes May 11th in Reading, Pennsylvania. Three months later, on August 9th, the tour will resume in Cincinatti, OH, for another month of shows before closing out in Denver on September 2nd.

So many pre-sale ticket packages go on sale. Wednesday, January 18th, and general admission tickets will be available on January 20th at 10 a.m. local time.

i've seen them twice, in 2022 and 2023, some of the best experiences of my life, definitely gonna see them again every chance i get

Gojira is sick

Their sound was amazing and they were awesome to watch. They were really interactive with the crowd and played some really cool songs, my favorite being The Art of Dying. I loved when they had us singing along to the chant. Also Mario was awesome as he always was, fantastic and wildly talented drummer. I was also surprised by Joe’s guitar playing as some of his solos were pretty sick. They were overall pretty awesome and would totally recommend seeing them live.

Top Tier Show

First time at the Azura Amphitheater, great venue, awesome staff. 3rd time seeing Lorna Shore, previously as headliners, so this show was pretty short by comparison due to them opening. 6 song set, around 40 minutes of stage time. That said though, while less on the quantity, the quality was as superb as ever from them. 1st time seeing Mastodon, not really my cup of tea stylistically, but they put on a hell of a show live. Was better than i expected and was quite happy with the performance overall. 17 song set, 1hr-15minutes stage time. 1st time seeing Gojira, big fan, and had very high expectations going in, and they blew them away. Top 5 live set i have ever experienced. They were absolutely phenomenal. 13 song set, 1hr-15minutes stage time. Overall one of the best concert experiences i have ever had. Highly recommend the venue and the bands.

Show Great, Venue Lacking

The bands put on a great show! We were saddened that upon arrival half of the venue was closed. This created impossible merch and food lines, overcrowded, disgusting bathrooms and an unsafe walking area. If azura amphitheater is going to have a show, they need to do it right.

Lorna shore was awesome to see live. As well as mastodon. Gojira put on an amazing performance as always.

If you ever go to the Azura Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, KS do not buy the "VIP Club"upgrade. There is no view of the stage and no perks. Huge waste of $80. The only positive was the VIP entrance which fast tracked us into the venue, but still not worth it.

Gojira is beautiful

All the other band were excellent as well. Gojira is so tight with their live experience. From start to finish you’re either in awe or banging your head.

I went with my Grandson for a different concert, musically for me. All 3 bands were fun to watch. I would like to have heard more lyrics, instead of yelling into a microphone, but that is not their music Quick set up between shows and everyone seemed to have a good time.. The Ledge is a very good venue, We will be coming back for more.

Gojira’s Merch Prices On Their New European/UK Tour Spark Heated Debate

After being met with pandemic-related issues and logistical challenges, French progressive metal outfit Gojira recently commenced their previously postponed leg of European/UK touring. However, the acclaimed group have been met with a bit of backlash online regarding the pricing of their merchandise at the shows.

The tweet has managed to rack up over 559k views on Twitter since being posted this past Sunday, February 12th. It is thought to have been taken at the opening Irish dates of the band’s ongoing European/UK trek. For those not native to the UK, the aforementioned prices roughly translate to a $49 USD for a t-shirt, $97 USD for a hoodie, and so on.

As has been detailed in the past, touring in recent times for the majority of bands is by no means an easy feat. With little income generated from streaming for all but a lucky few, and declining physical sales, merch sales from live shows have become the lifeblood of a touring artist in recent years.

Touring has also become an even bigger gamble in the current economic climate. The nature of tours being booked months, if not a year, in advance means that budgeting for them has become highly unpredictable. Faced with staggering inflation, an energy crisis and an industry looking to quickly bounce back from years of pandemic-related income loss , the strain put on mid-level and lower touring artists has been devastating to say the least.

While some have taken to assume Gojira are being greedy, others have rallied to their defense. The eco-conscious band have had a long history of standing firm to their beliefs of environmentalism and sustainability , and as you’ll soon find out, that may play a part in the seemingly ‘inflated’ prices.

Among those to jump to the defense of Gojira is Stray From The Path drummer (and ‘ The Downbeat ‘ podcast host) Craig Reynolds . Across a series of tweets, he delved into what he feels are the reasons for the higher cost of the merch:

Mastodon, Gojira Announce 2023 Tour with Lorna Shore

The Mega-Monsters Tour attacks North American this spring

Metal juggernauts Mastodon and Gojira are hitting the road together this spring on the Mega-Monsters Tour. The trek kicks off on and wraps up on. Very special guests for the run will be one of last year’s biggest breakout acts – Lorna Shore. The first leg of the trek kicks off on April 18 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon and wraps up on May 11 at the Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania. In August, the bands will return for a second run starting on August 9 at MegaCorp Pavilion in Cincinnati, Ohio. Check out the fill tour itinerary below.

Back in 2014, Mastodon and Gojira mounted a brief U.S. tour together.

Mastodon released their ninth album Hushed and Grim on October 29, 2021. The double-LP featured the GRAMMY® Award-nominated track “Pushing The Tides.” It performed well commercially, peaking at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums Chart. It also marked the band’s third straight chart-topping album on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums.

Nearly two years since its release, Gojira are still riding the wave of their latest effort Fortitude (Roadrunner). The album’s hit single “Amazonia” earned the band a GRAMMY® nod for Best Metal Performance. The record topped both Billboard’s Top Rock and Top Hard Rock Albums charts. It peaked at No. 2 in their native France.

Death metallers Lorna Shore formed in 2009 and released three full-length albums from 2015 to 2020. Last year, however, the band finally broke out with their massive hit LP Pain Remains (Century Media). The album hit No. 2 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart. With the release of the critically-acclaimed record, the band are in the forefront of a new class of modern metal acts.

One of the finest and accessible extreme metal bands in the modern era. An assault on the senses with tight technical ability to create complex, multi layered masterpieces. Gift of Guilt, Vacuity, Flying Whales and Stranded great songs to first listen to.

A brilliant night despite one or two hiccups, personal and otherwise.

Gojira are like no other band I’ve seen. My son and I had been looking forward to this gig for months.

They played a very decent mix of songs, old and newer; among which a couple of favourites so we both went home happy.

The music is their own...an eclectic rollercoaster pace with some very poignant and relevant lyrics.

They experienced a technical hitch during the show with the lights, but no one cared. To be honest it’s all about the music with them. They could have played in darkness and it still would have been an awesome gig. The band were absolute professionals despite it all as well.

The O2 venues do however need a more comprehensive and workable policy when dealing with autistic fans. An incident with security (just one, others did finally help us), did put a small dampener, leaving my son feeling physically sick with stress throughout the show, otherwise it was worth the wait and effort to get him there! Hopefully they’ll review their staff training in future.

Overall I would highly recommend seeing this band.

By far the best show I've ever been to. Amazing sound, amazing energy from both the band and the crowds, a strong comraderie especially when the entire crowd is singing/clapping/cheering to the songs.

A fantastic night and would 1000% reccomend and can't wait to catch Gojira again!

The heaviest setlist in the universe! Gojira brought the riffs and more to the first night of their UK and Ireland tour…

Last night, the French metal masters Gojira kicked off their tour of the UK and Ireland in powerful fashion. Storming into the National Stadium in Dublin for their first Irish gig since 2017, the progressive heavyweights more than made up for their extended time away with a setlist of 16 absolute monsters.

Leaning into 2021's Fortitude LP, opening on Born For One Thing and closing on Amazonia with a handful of new favourites in between, Gojira also debuted their brand-new track Our Time Is Now . But the Ondres rifflords also brought back some classics, belting out The Way Of All Flesh for the first time since 2009 and The Art Of Dying for the first time since 2016.
