What is Kabini?

Kabini forest is a wildlife sanctuary located in Karnataka, India and is part of Nagarhole National Park. The park is located in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and stretches over 847 sq km. It is home to a variety of animals, such as elephants, tigers, leopards, deer, and more. Additionally, the sanctuary is home to a beautiful Kabini river and tranquil backwaters, making it a popular destination for boat safaris.

Why is Kabini such a popular tourist destination?

In recent years, Kabini has become increasingly popular with tourists for a number of compelling reasons. First, its abundant biodiversity and wildlife, including majestic tigers, leopards, and black panthers, make it a haven for nature lovers. Secondly, Kabini’s stunning landscape, which combines serene backwaters, lush forests, and picturesque landscapes, creates a mesmerizing setting for travelers. Furthermore, Kabini provides an immersive and adventurous experience with wildlife safaris, boat rides, and birdwatching. Furthermore, the region’s conservation and sustainable tourism practices contribute to its appeal, allowing visitors to witness wildlife in its natural habitat while supporting conservation efforts.

The History of Kabini

Kabini forest, like BR Hills Tiger Reserve , was originally a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Mysore. The area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the 1950s, and hunting was banned. Kabini has since become a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.

The types of safaris available in Kabini

Kabini offers a variety of safaris for visitors. Kabini forest consists of two zones, A and B. The following are some of the top things to do while you are here:

Canter bus safari

A budget-friendly way to explore Kabini’s forests is by canter bus safaris. Canter buses are large, open-windowed vehicles that can accommodate groups of people. On weekdays, safaris run from 6.30 to 9 in the morning and 3.30 to 6 in the evening. Over the weekend, the same safari is conducted in two batches, each taking 1.30 hours. Morning safaris are from 6 to 7.30 and then 7.30 to 9. Evening safaris run from 3 to 4.30 and then 4.30 to 6.

It is advisable to check the website for the most recent timings. It is necessary to book the canter bus safari online . Walk-in registration is accepted as long as seats are available. I prefer Canter buses over jeeps since they provide a better vantage point to observe wildlife and take photographs.

Arrive at the Kakanakote Safari Center at least 30 minutes before your safari time. In case you booked your safari online, you need to approach the booking counter to obtain your bus number and seat number.

Canter bus safaris are currently priced at INR 610 + GST per person per safari on weekdays and INR 460 + GST on weekends.

  • The mornings in Kabini are usually misty, so it is advisable to take a safari at 7.30 am on weekends.
  • Canter buses operated by Karnataka Forest Department are not restricted to a particular zone. Based on the sighting of tigers or leopards at the time of your safari, they can cross the zone.

Premium Canter bus safari

With their premium canter bus, Kabini now offers 3-hour safaris every day. With its 2×1 seating arrangement, this bus offers more legroom and spacious seating. Due to its smaller seating capacity, this bus is less crowded. An important feature of the bus is its semi-transparent roof. Besides this, they have a large rear window that sometimes allows you to shoot wildlife that suddenly emerges from the bushes after you have left.

The premium canter bus cannot be booked online. You will need to arrive at Kakanakote Safari Center much earlier and try your luck with the counter booking. The safaris in this bus start at 6 in the morning and 3 in the evening every day. Safaris are scheduled to last three hours.

Premium canter bus safaris are currently priced at INR 855 per person per safari.

Jeep safari (operated by JLR)

Taking a jeep safari in Kabini is an exhilarating way to explore the wilderness in a private or semi-private vehicle. The safaris are conducted by JLR, which provides well-maintained jeeps and experienced guides. They are typically scheduled for 2-3 hours in the morning and evening. A Jeep Safari in Kabini costs around INR 2,800 + GST per person per safari, which is significantly higher than the canter bus. Because JLR has a limited number of jeeps, in-house guests are given first priority. Depending on available space, other visitors may be accommodated. A jeep can seat a maximum of ten people.

Jeep safaris start from Jungle Lodges and Resorts, about 12 km from Kakanakote Safari Center.

Van safari (operated by JLR)

There is a cheaper option to JLR Jeep Safari in Kabini. A Van safari is similar to a Canter bus safari offered by the Karnataka Forest Department from Kakanakote Safari Center. A Van Safari through JLR costs around INR 2,000 + GST per person per safari.

Note : Each JLR safari vehicle is assigned a specific zone. Vehicles assigned to Zone A cannot enter Zone B and vice versa.

Boat safari (operated by JLR)

Taking a boat safari in Kabini is a unique and serene way to discover the region’s stunning backwaters. Boat safaris are conducted by Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR), providing an opportunity to observe the rich birdlife, crocodiles, and other aquatic creatures in their natural habitat. Boat safaris typically operate in the early morning and late afternoon, lasting approximately one to two hours each. Guests staying at JLR are given priority over those staying at other hotels. A Boat Safari in Kabini costs around INR 2,500 + GST per person per safari.

Nature walk and bird watching

Nature walks and bird watching in Kabini offer an excellent opportunity to experience the stunning natural environment. Experienced guides lead you on these walks as you discover the region’s diverse flora and fauna and learn about their ecological significance. Be on the lookout for a variety of bird species as you stroll through the wilderness. Having the chance to experience Kabini’s wilderness and ecosystems is a serene and enlightening experience.

Coracle boat ride

A There is no better way to explore the Kabini backwaters than with a coracle boat ride. The traditional bamboo circular boats covered with waterproof material provide a unique way to explore the serene waterways of Kabini. Coracle rides are led by local fishermen, and offer picturesque views of the surrounding greenery as well as a chance to spot birds and other wildlife.

Planning a Kabini Safari

The most important thing to consider before embarking on a Kabini Safari adventure is to plan everything carefully. The following are some factors to consider when planning your trip to Kabini:

What’s the best time to go on a wildlife safari in Kabini?

A wildlife safari in Kabini is best enjoyed during the dry season, which typically lasts between November and May. Wildlife sightings are more likely during this time of year since the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to see animals in their natural habitat. February through May are my favorite months. They occur during the summer season when the forest’s internal water sources dry up, causing animals to come out for water, leading to exciting encounters. It is important to remember that Kabini is a year-round destination, and each season brings its own unique experiences and sightings.

What is the best way to get to Kabini?

The most convenient way to reach Kabini is through Mysore, the nearest major city. Kabini is about a 2-hour drive from Mysore. Nearest airport to Kabini is Mysore Airport, which offers limited connectivity. Another option is to fly into Bangalore, which is well-connected to both domestic and international flights. You can take a taxi or bus to Kabini, which is about a 4-hour drive from Bangalore. Another option is to take a train to Mysore, which is well-connected to major cities in India, and then continue the journey to Kabini by road.

What are the best places to stay during a Kabini safari?

There are a variety of accommodation options in Kabini , depending on your budget and preferences. You can choose from luxury resorts, mid-budget lodges, or eco-friendly homestays. These include renowned properties like The Serai , Evolve Back (formerly known as Orange County), and Kabini River Lodge (popularly known as JLR), which offer excellent amenities, wildlife-themed activities, and stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. They also offer private jeep safaris and guided nature walks in Kabini’s wilderness.

Several farmhouses and homestays offer comfortable rooms and essential amenities for travelers on a budget. Budget accommodations like these are perfect for backpackers, families , and solo travelers.

What should you pack for your Kabini safari?

When packing for a Kabini safari, it’s essential to be well-prepared for the wildlife adventure. Here are some items you should consider including in your packing list:

  • Light and breathable clothing : Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing in neutral or earthy hues so you can blend in with the natural surroundings. Protect yourself from insects and the sun by wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants.
  • Sturdy footwear : Pack comfortable walking shoes for jungle safaris. Ensure they provide good support and have a strong grip.
  • Sun protection : Pack high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself against the sun.
  • Insect repellent : Pack a Familycare insect repellent to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes and other insects.
  • Binoculars and camera : Bring binoculars to get a better view of wildlife from far away. For those memorable moments, bring your camera with a telephoto lens.
  • Personal medications and first aid kit : Pack an adequate supply of any medication you need or prescriptions you need on a regular basis. Carry a basic first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic cream, and medications for common ailments.
  • Water bottle and snacks : Staying hydrated is crucial, so keep a reusable water bottle with you. Additionally, snacks can be useful for boosting energy during longer excursions.
  • Lightweight backpack or daypack : When on safari, carrying a small backpack or daypack is convenient to carry your essentials, including water, snacks, a camera, and your personal belongings.

Make sure you check the weather forecast for the specific time of your visit to Kabini and pack accordingly. Additionally, you should inquire with your accommodation about any safari-related recommendations or requirements.

Wildlife sightings during Kabini safaris

Kabini is home to some of India’s most elusive and endangered wildlife species. Visitors to Kabini safari can spot the following animals:

Tiger: the elusive king of Kabini

The tiger, often referred to as the elusive king of Kabini, is one of the main attractions during the safari. A tiger encounter in the wild is a thrilling and unforgettable experience due to its majestic presence and powerful aura. A healthy tiger population (12 tigers per 100 sq km) provides visitors with a greater chance to see these majestic creatures close up in their natural habitat and marvel at their awe-inspiring beauty.

Tips for a safe and enjoyable Kabini safari

During the Kabini Safari, it is important to follow the rules and guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. A few of these rules include staying inside the safari vehicle at all times, not feeding or approaching wildlife, and not littering.

To ensure the safety of both visitors and wildlife, park authorities have established rules and guidelines for visitors to follow. Here are a few of the most important rules:

  • During the safari, visitors cannot leave the safari vehicle.
  • Loud noises and disturbing the animals are strictly prohibited.
  • There is a ban on smoking and alcohol consumption within the park.
  • It is forbidden to bring plastic materials into the park.
  • To avoid unwanted incidents during the safari, these rules must be followed.

Kabini forest is an unforgettable adventure for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Kabini offers something for every type of visitor, from avid photographers searching for the perfect shot to families seeking an immersive wildlife experience. Its rich biodiversity, conservation efforts, and thrilling safari experiences make Kabini a gateway to untamed wonders. Thanks Yuvraj for stopping by. The safari can only be booked online. They do keep some slots for walk-in customers but it is too big a risk to take. Usually the queue starts 2-3 hours before the safari during the peak season and a very few can get it.

In Pursuit of Black Panther – The Ultimate Kabini Safari guide

My opening lines are a tale of all wildlife enthusiasts who come in pursuit of the Big Black Cat – the melanistic leopard or better known as the black leopard in Kabini forest. Many have been lucky to have spotted Blackie or the Black Panther in the first Kabini safari and then, there have been tales of many who have been able to see him only after 10 or more. That, however, does not mean that they always went back disappointed. Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary might just have one Black Panther but it sure has a wide variety of other exotic creatures that more than make up for the missing panther!

Kabini - a forest known for the amazing leopard sightings

Kabini Forest is in fact, one of the best places for spotting leopards . And if you haven’t spotted one in your Kabini Safari, you are most likely to at least spot a tiger and herds of elephants . Then there are sloth bears, exotic birds, tortoises, bats, barking deer, langurs, and….I can go on and on. Personally, Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary safaris have never disappointed me – making this forest of India my favorite place for enjoying the wildlife safari.

Through this guide to Kabini Safaris, I will be sharing the various attractions of Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary , where to stay in Kabini, how to get here, how to book a Kabini jeep safari and Kabini boat safari and what you can expect through your journey. It also, includes information on the best time to visit Kabini, the safari timings and prices . With all this information, I am sure that you will be soon planning your pursuit of various pals and the elusive Black Panther in Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary. So, let’s get started.

A quick background on Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary

A tiger that I encountered in one of the Kabini Safaris

Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary actually, encompasses two of the six zones of the larger 650 sq km Nagarhole forest (also, known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park ). The other zones border Coorg and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary . The huge deciduous spread is home to over 200 tigers and 100 leopards – which also made it a popular royal hunting ground for the Mysore Maharajas and the British viceroys. Today, one can still spot these majestic cats in almost all the zones but the density and opportunity to see are the highest in Kabini.

Kabini river that gives this zone of Nagarhole its name

One main reason for this is the Kabini River which gives this area its name and attracts numerous birds and animals around it. The wide and open Nilgiri and Teak plantations that make up the Kabini forest make it easier to spot these creatures. Furthermore, unlike its surrounding forest zones, Kabini is protected and there are no highways or human populations within it, making it secure for the wild.

Which of the Kabini Safaris should you choose?

What? There are more than one type of safaris?

Well, actually there is more than one type of safari and I would classify them based on the gates, the type of safari and their timings. These are organized by the Forest Department of Karnataka directly or by their associate – Jungle Lodges and Resorts. Let me decipher them all for you in this Kabini guide so that you know your options better.

Nagarhole Safaris – Options by Gates

Kabini with its open deciduous forests, ponds and river makes it favorable for wildlife sighting

As I mentioned earlier, Kabini is just one of the few zones of the larger Nagarhole forest. The larger area has three main gates from where one can take the safaris.

  • Veeranahosahalli Gate near Hunsur
  • Nanachi Gate near Kutta, closer to Coorg
  • Antharasanthe Gate in Kabini (also, called Dammanakatte or the Kakanakote gate)

Except for the Veeranahosahalli gate, the other gates for Kabini jungle safaris can be booked online using this website . These safaris are done in canters and jeeps. Most of the time you will find that the option of jeep safari in Kabini shows as full. The reason for this is that most of the Kabini jeep safaris are available only through JLR (more on this soon). You can nonetheless, give it a shot else, go ahead and book a Kabini safari on a canter or bus. Each gate has two safaris – one in the morning and the other at around 3 pm. Note that it is better to book at least 3 – 4 days in advance as the canters are limited and get filled very quickly.

While you can expect to see the same wildlife through the various regions, the opportunity to spot is higher at Kabini. Thus, it is best to do a Kabini jungle safari booking for the Antharasanthe Gate .

Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary Safaris by Type

There are two options that you have when it comes to booking the Kabini Safaris – a land safari and a boat safari . Both these options are available twice, every day. The morning ones start at 6 am while the afternoon ones are at 3 pm. The duration of each ranges between 2.5 hours to 3 hours. The experience and the wildlife that you see is what differentiates the two!

Kabini Boat Safari

Kabini Boat Safari - a dynamic option that birders would love

The Kabini boat safaris begin at the Jungle Lodges (JLR) campus . You can do a Kabini backwaters forest safari booking through your resort. It does not matter which Kabini resort you are staying in for this. Most of them have a tie-up with the JLR desk and all you have to do is ask your resort to book a slot for you in that day’s boat safari. (The morning ones will have to be booked a day in advance) . Your resort might charge you a little extra for the drop and pick-up that they offer to JLR – unless it is a part of their Kabini safari packages.

According to me, t he best time for a Kabini Safari on a boat is during the second half of the day . It gets fairly misty in the morning and you might not have clear visibility when on the boat.

What kind of wildlife can you expect to see with a Kabini Boat Safari?

The migratory Bar Headed Geese seen on a safari by boat in Kabini

If you are an avid birder, you will love the Kabini boat safari. From the resident kingfishers, cormorants, ospreys and storks to the migratory rare birds like the the bar-headed geese, I saw them all. What was even more amazing was that I could see them in action at close quarters – swooping and catching their prey, launching and landing and flying close to the water. Read more about the Kabini birdlife in this post .

Black cormorants seen during the Kabini Boat Safari

As the expert boatman guides the vessel around, he will point out to the various land mammals and reptiles. It is almost certain that you will see spotted deers, langurs and elephants. In fact, during my Kabini sightings on the boat safari included so many elephants – herds, babies and tuskers that I finally ceased being amazed by them.

Herd of elephants seen on a boat safari

The Kabini river safari allows you to get really close to the Indian muggers . The lazy creatures lie around like mute statues in an open museum. At one point, we got so close that I could count the crooked teeth in the crocodile’s jaw. Of course, I got a start when it suddenly slid into the water right next to the boat! Ooops!

Indian Mugger Crocodile that I saw during my Kabini Boat Safari

On some lucky days, the people on a boat safari in Kabini have been able to see tigers and leopards by the riverside. It is not uncommon to spot the exotic Malabar hornbills and serpent eagles too, when on a boat ride. On the whole, I found that the Kabini river boat safari was a little more dynamic as compared to the land safari with all the action that went around the river. There was not one dull moment!

Land Safaris – Kabini Jeep Safari and Canter Safaris

If you are looking for Bagheera (Blackie or the Black Panther) and its catty comrades, then it is an easy choice of Kabini forest Safaris. Land safari it is!

There are two ways in which you can explore Kabini by land – one is by way of the Government Canters and the other is by Kabini Jeep Safari. The forest department canters can be booked through the Nagarhole website and have limited availability. You can even book these in person by reaching the Antharasanthe Gate in Kabini a day in advance for the morning safari and around 10 am for the evening safari.

Kabini Jeep Safari is ideal to spot the bigger mammals and the Cats

The Kabini Jeep Safaris are exclusive to Jungle Lodges and Resorts and its guests only. These JLR Kabini safaris are included in the stay package of that property. It is not possible to do these jeep JLR safari bookings on your own – though you will find an option on the website but it is almost always shown as full. You can try you luck at the JLR Resorts – if they have any extra seats lefts. This is usually after their guests are accomodated.

If you are staying at any other Kabini resort, then you have two options for a land canter safaris. The first is through the Nagarhole website or approaching the Forest gates directly. The second is through your own Kabini resort that has slots in the canters operated through JLR and forest officials. Recently, there is a new bus (a little luxurious with plush seats) along with the open air canters.

Zone B of Kabini forest that is close to the river

Kabini forest is divided into A zone and B zone. The A zone is largely forest, wooded area while the B zone takes you closer to the Kabini river. Frankly, this is more of a good-to-know fact as you have no control over which zone you will be taken to. The vehicles are divided randomly between the two zones and once you are in a particular zone, you will only be in that area.

Morning or noon safari? Well, experts say that morning safari is always better but frankly, my experience says that it is all on your luck. The few times that I have gone on Kabini safaris, I have had amazing sightings at noon.

What kind of wildlife can you expect to see with a Kabini Forest Safari by land?

Kaimara Male Leopard that I saw during my Kabini Jeep Safari

BIG CATS – including the Royal Bengal tiger and the leopards . And of course the one exclusive melanistic leopard – Bagheera. I have been lucky to have seen them and yes, in one single Kabini Safari (not the last one but the penultimate one).

Kaimara Female leopard sitting on a tree - sadly she refused to face us

It is pretty normal to catch these big cats on the land but to see the leopards on the trees is something else. A Kabini forest safari is one experience that gives you an opportunity to actually spot them climbing, lying down and even jumping off the trees.

Grey Langurs - commonly found in Kabini Forest

Spotted deers, barking deers, wild gaurs and langurs are as common as people in a city. Here and there, you are likely to come across Indian terrapins and tortoises. This set of three were so small and camouflaged.

Indian Terrapins - spotted on a land safari in Kabini

“ There ….see three Indian Terrapins on the rock?” – said our naturalist

“ Where ? I can’t see them.” – I complained

“ See those rocks, and something coming out of them? ” he says

“ Uh Huh!” – I mumble!

“ Those are the heads of the Terrapin. Focus your lens on those” – he laughed while I gasped at the way his eyes had spotted these tiny creatures without binoculars!

Osprey with its kill - caught during a land safari in Kabini

Giant Malabar Squirrels and elephant herds are the other creatures that I have seen in the Kabini forest. It is a little hard to spot the birds in the dense jungle but the few that I did manage to catch were Ospreys and Eagles .

Leopards sightings are the other highlight of Pench national park safaris

The other wildlife park where you can spot leopards in plenty is Pench National Park. I was lucky to have spotted cubs through two of my safaris there. Read about those as well as how to book a Pench safari

How to book a Kabini safari?

A quick synopsis of what I have already explained – there are two ways to book your Land safari – the first through your resort in Kabini. Common FAQs about booking a Kabini forest safari

How to reach kabini .

The closest airport to Kabini is in Bengaluru (275 km). Bengaluru is well connected to not just the rest of India but outside India too. One can hire a cab from the airport to take you straight to Kabini via Mysuru. Alternately, you can book one of the many daily trains from Bangalore to Mysore and then head to Kabini from Mysore.

Mysore is just 90 km from Kabini. Though it has a domestic airport, the frequency of flights is very low. It is best used as a central railway station for Kabini. One can either book a cab online or at the railway station for Kabini.

Where to stay in Kabini?

There are tons of resorts in Kabini that offer you comfortable stay options with good food and activities like Nature walks, mini safaris, kayaking and more. However, note that they are all quite expensive. There are no budget stays in Kabini. Jungle Lodges and Resorts is the most popular stay option in Kabini but it does get booked fairly quickly during the peak season.

Besides JLR, you have options like The Serai . Kabini Waterwoods , Kabini Evolveback , Kaav Safari Lodge , Red Earth and the Bison. All these really get busy and it is recommended that you book them as early as possible. I have stayed with Kabini waterwoods and Kaav safari lodge . I loved both these and you can see why by checking out the given links.

Other than these, you also have the forest dormitories that you can book through the Nagarhole forest department website.

How many Kabini wildlife safaris should I book?

At least two land safaris and one boat safari in Kabini is ideal.

Is Kabini worth it?

A big yes from me! Kabini wildlife reserve is one of the most under-rated forests and full of surprises. The density of animals in this small forest is quite huge and that ensures some good sightings for its visitors.

Additional travel tips for Kabini safaris

  • Make sure that you carry your Government ID cards as ID proofs. If you have done an online Kabini safari booking, then ensure that the ID that you have entered while filling the form is the same as what you present at the gate.
  • Wear comfortable cotton clothes with muted colors like greens, browns or blacks. Carry a scarf or a hat to protect your hair.
  • The Kabini safaris can get really dusty. You will find a fine layer of red sand over you once you finish the safari. There is no avoiding the same.
  • Do not make loud noises and attract attention. Put your phones on silent during the wildlife safari
  • Getting off the vehicles during the safaris in Kabini is strictly prohibited.
  • Carry lots of water and stay hydrated. Keep some dry snacks if you wish.

24 thoughts on “In Pursuit of Black Panther – The Ultimate Kabini Safari guide”

I havent done a safari yet and I do plan to do one in Africa to see all the ‘Lion King’ animals however I would also love to check this safari out. I am a huge lover of big cats, and to see tigers, panthers and leopards in the wild, I am there! Now I just got to check where Kabini is as I never heard of the place. Have bookmarked this page for furture reference ust in case I want to see those beautiful creatures. 🙂 (My kids sure would love a safari as well right now, much better than them keep watching Discovery Channel during lockdown here in the UK)

Nothing better than seeing the wildlife for real. And Kabini in that respect is quite raw.

I am definitely putting this on my bucket list. I have always wanted to do a safari to see these wild animals in person, and Kabini looks like a great option. If I could see a tiger in the wild I would die happy!

Oh then you should definitely get to Kabini and fast!

I haven’t been to Kabini yet, Amy. And I so want to visit it now as I am in India. I loved how you spent good time in Kabini. I especially loved the boat safari. But, even in the land, you got great sighting of animals. Thanks for sharing the stay options.

Both the safaris – boat and land are so worth your time. Each is different in their own way. Hope you get here soon

Ooh! I would love to do a boat safari. We went on a true safari, which was only by land, but that sounds like such a great option! I wish there were a few budget stays in the area, but with it being a once in a lifetime trip, it’s ok to splurge a bit. I love seeing animals in their natural habitats! 🙂

You got that right! Worthwhile the spend for something so real

Wow! Look at all that magnificent cats you’ve got to see on Land Safari. I will definitely do this when I visit Kabini. Other animals are so attractive, too. The elephants, the monkey, the birds… They look happy to be in their habitat. The Boat Safari looks cool, too, as you get to see the elephants by the river side. And possible sightings of tigers and leopards as well. Awesome!

You are bound to spot something really cool when in Kabini. It is so worth your time. Hope you can try it for yourself.

I have never seen a wildlife sanctuary before (which is kind of sad), but I am planning go on a safari in Africa. However, after seeing what a magnificent experience Kabini is, makes me think I should add this to the list also. It’s good to know they offer both land and water safaris, but I think I’d rather go on land. Seeing elephants, monkeys, wild gaurs and even leopards, sounds way more appealing!

I would not discount the boat safari – it is different and fun too, especially if you like birds. In any case, hope you can visit soon

Woah Ami! That first picture of the leopard would convince literally every animal lover to add Kabini in their bucket list. And seriously, I didn’t even know there were more than one kind of Safaris one could choose! The boat safari looks amazing and I would totally opt for it if pressed for time. It is sad that there aren’t any budget options in the area, but I guess managing and maintaining a place in such a forest without disrupting the area would not be cheap, plus this is a once in a lifetime experience so I guess it is all worth it!

True that – given it is a lifetime experience, it is worth spending a little for the stay. And so far, Kabini has never disappointed me!

Oh my God you saw a tiger? That has been my wishlist for so long and unfortunately I have not seen a tiger in the wild. I have seen leopards a few times and once when I was in Kabini as well. I love going to Kabini over and over again and I will definitely go back when I am in India next time.

Kabini so far has been really kind to me. I hope the same luck passes onto you when you try it out next.

Safaris have long been in our bucketlist! We love how you get to have such an upclose experience with wildlife in their natural habitat. Kabini looks especially beautiful and adventurous and will definitely include it in our destinations one day.

Glad you like it Marielle

Thanks for the detailed information. Can we take boat safari ride by purchasing tickets at the counter on the day rather than going through a resort? I just want to drive to the safari counter and buy tickets.

For the boat safari, you will have to go to the resort and book your tickets. Either way, you can only board from the resort. Safari counter usually gives you tickets only for the land safari.

Thanks for the info, One of the hoarding in Antharasanthe says safari bookings can be made 1hour prior to the safari start time. Can you please confirm that? If possible, please share the contact information of Forest range office.

I am sorry but I do not have the phone number. Also, the information on the blog is the latest that I have from them. Hope that helps

Thank you for all the information Ami , very valuable while planning. Quick question , which resort is closest to the gate Antharasanthe Gate? And for the land safari’s is there a limit to the number of people on a jeep?

Jungle lodges would be the closest. However, all the resorts in Kabini offer a drop and pick up to the gate or Jungle lodges as a complimentary service. As for the capacity, the jeep has a seating for 6 but is only available through Jungle lodges.

Best Time to do Kabini Safari

Embarking on a Kabini Safari is a year-round possibility, yet timing your visit during the dry season , from November to May , significantly enhances the experience. This period is celebrated as the prime time for wildlife observation for several compelling reasons:

Prime Wildlife Spotting:

  • Enhanced Visibility : The sparse vegetation of the dry season dramatically improves animal sightings. Creatures big and small are easier to spot amidst the less dense foliage, offering a more rewarding safari experience.
  • Watering Hole Gatherings : As the Kabini River’s levels dwindle, expansive grasslands and riverbeds emerge, becoming a magnet for wildlife. This natural congregation point, especially for elephants, provides spectacular opportunities to witness these majestic animals in their social gatherings.
  • Pleasant Climate : With temperatures oscillating between a comfortable 15°C and 30°C, safaris are not only more enjoyable but also offer the perfect setting for extended explorations without the discomfort of extreme heat or cold.
  • Optimal Photography Conditions : The clear visibility and abundant natural light of the dry season are a boon for photography enthusiasts. Capturing the stunning landscapes and the diverse fauna in their natural settings becomes a more fruitful endeavor.
  • Increased Black Panther Sightings : The elusive and rare black panther, a highlight for many safari-goers, is more likely to be observed during this time as it ventures out in search of prey.

Planning Your Visit:

  • Avoiding the Monsoon : It’s advisable to plan your safari outside the monsoon months (July to September) when the park is closed. The dry season not only ensures accessibility but also promises a richer, more diverse wildlife experience.
  • Booking in Advance : Given the popularity of this peak season, securing your safari slots and accommodations in advance is recommended to avoid disappointment.

A Kabini Safari during the dry season offers an unrivaled window into the vibrant ecosystem of Nagarhole National Park. With nature at its most inviting, this period promises an unforgettable adventure filled with awe-inspiring animal encounters and serene natural beauty.

Kabini Backwaters Forest Safari is an extremely popular experience conducted by the Karnataka Forest Department in Kabini River. There are various lodges and guest houses in the region through which you can enjoy a boat safari at Kabini as well. Going on a Kabini safari on a boat in the Kabini river would be the perfect way to admire the lush green surroundings, and nearby flora and fauna.

On the banks of the Kabini River, you may spot a herd of majestic Asiatic elephants peacefully bathing, feeding, and getting on with their lives. Amongst the plethora of wildlife present on the river banks, you may observe smooth-coated otters playing in the water, marsh crocodiles lazing on the banks, as well as a myriad of water birds dipping in and out of the water.

For a detailed overview of the beautiful birds of Kabini, read our blog, “Birds of Kabini”(upcoming). A boat safari would surely be one of the most innovative and exciting ways to explore Kabini and absorb its beauty. These safaris are operated by Jungle Lodges & Resorts (owned by the Karnataka government).

Boat safari kabini

This is the most common and popular way to visit and explore the exceptionally beautiful and lavish forests of Kabini. You can make either a mini-bus or jeep Kabini safari booking to reach the heart of the forest, and take a look at the wilderness from up-close. By going on such a safari, you may get the opportunity to spot various wild animals like tigers, leopards, elephants, and sambar deer, as well as birds like a peacock and crested hawk-eagle.

This jungle safari is controlled by government authorities. Hence, you have to follow certain terms and conditions when going on this Kabini safari. Below are the various vehicle options you can find for the jungle safari. It is important that you carefully check out the details of each of them, and then opt to book the one that perfectly suits your requirements and budget.

Jeep safaris are operated by Jungle Lodges & Resorts. Kabini jeep safari booking can be made through the resorts you are staying in if they are associated with the forest department. Your resort booking can get you a place on this safari, and its expenses are generally included in the tariff itself.

Kabini Safari

Operated by the Forest Department, these budget-friendly safaris are an ideal choice for people enjoying their trip with a large group of friends or family members. The mini-bus safari runs twice each day, and these Kabini safari timings are from 6.30 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. , and again in the afternoon from 3.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m on weekdays and the weekends, there are 4 safaris conducted at 6.00 a.m to 7.30 a.m , 7.30 a.m to 9.00 a.m and 3.00 p.m to 4.30 p.m , 4:30 p.m to 6.00 p.m later on in the day.

Its tickets have to be purchased from the Forest Department booking counter present at the Nagarhole National Park or can be booked online. These counters open about 30 minutes before the start of the safaris, and hence it is important to be on time to make the bookings.

The Nagarhole National Park has two distinctive safari zones- Zone A and Zone B. Zone B is close to the Kabini backwaters. The safari tours booked through Jungle Lodges & Resorts can cover only one of these zones at a time. While on the other hand, the Forest Department canter safaris enjoy unrestricted access to both of these zones.

The boat, as well as the vehicular Kabini jungle safari bookings, can easily be made through your resort if you are staying in one of the tourism department lodges. Read our blog “ Top 5 Resorts in Kabini ” to learn more about our favourite resorts in Kabini!

Alternatively, you can make your Kabini jungle safari (on a canter) by visiting the Dammanakatte Forest Department office in Antharasanthe. This office is located close to the Kabini forest gate. You shall need a valid government ID card to make your bookings from there.

While there are several private lodges and resorts present near the Kabini jungle, not all of them have permission to make safari bookings for their guests. Hence, it is important that you properly check out the details of the hotel you are booking your stay in.

Quite recently, the Forest Department has launched an online booking facility for a Kabini safari at the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve website ( www.nagaraholetigerreserve.com ). This Kabini jungle safari online booking facility comes as a huge boon for tourists.

For a long time, to book a canter safari, wildlife enthusiasts had to sometimes stand in a huge queue at Damanakatte. The online booking facility now allows people to avoid any long queues and enables them to make their bookings within just a few minutes. Additionally, as the early morning safari starts at 6.30 a.m., many tourists had to leave Mysore very early in the morning, to make their bookings in time for all these years. This problem is easily solved with the online booking facility.

Moreover, as you can make Kabini jungle safari online booking right from your home, you do not have to waste a single moment of the tour in standing in queues, and shall be able to enjoy your holidays optimally by engaging in diverse, exciting activities amidst the enthralling greenery and natural beauty of this wonderland of Karnataka.

  •  Visit the official website of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, which is
  •   www.nagaraholetigerreserve.com
  •  Go to the booking section of the website
  •  Click on the ‘Book Rooms/Wildlife Safari’ option
  •   Log in to the website. If you do not have an account there, make a new one
  •   Provide relevant details as per the options present on your screens
  •   Select the date and timings of the Kabini safari as per your requirements
  •   Re-check all the details provided
  •   Proceed to make your payment

The same document number as entered on the website while making the online booking has to be produced at the time of the actual safari.

The diverse wildlife of Kabini offers extraordinary game viewing. The beauty of a Kabini safari is amplified because of the various available options. While the boat safari on the stunning backwaters gives an outer view of the forest, the jungle safaris take us into the depths of it. One can sight the spectacular wildlife in its natural habitat, on both the safaris.

Going on a Kabini safari would be an extremely thrilling and adventurous endeavor for any person. There is nothing better than being out in nature while having fresh air and wildlife as companions. So do not forget to make your safari bookings and plan a getaway to Kabini!

Kabini | Your Complete Guide to Captivating wilderness!

kabini forest safari location

Last updated on September 10th, 2023 at 06:53 pm

Kabini is a wonderful wilderness. It has everything a wild life enthusiast aspire for. Lovely forests. Amazing wild life from common langurs to the big cats. Huge population of birds. Beautiful backwaters of Kabini reservoir. Enthusiastic naturalists who knows the jungle at the back of their thumbs! Excellent choices for stay. All these things make Kabini as one of the sought after destination in the country.

We have been to Kabini many times. Every time, we have come back with surprises. The recent visit was in June last year before the start of the monsoon. The rains had started but was not in full swing.

We will take you through Kabini wildlife experience through the eyes of a curious wild life buffs. Through the eyes of our camera. Then we will tell you in detail about Kabini – step by step.

If you stay far from Kabini river lodge – the safari start point – the drive to it throws up some fantastic sights. Like this one. Of the glorious backwaters. The dam wasn’t full when we went in June and there wasn’t much water.

Please click on the pictures to see them in larger size.

The panoramic view of the backwaters on the way to Kabini river Lodge run by Jungle Lodges and Resorts of Government of Karnataka.

We signed up for three safaris. Two in the mornings and one in the afternoon.

Morning safari No 1 @ Kabini (Also known as Nagarahole National Park or Rajiv Gandhi National Park)

We reach the Kabini river lodge. Our safari is to start around 7 AM. Kabini river lodge managed by Jungle lodges and resorts was the hunting lodge of erstwhile Mysore Royal Family. The heritage structures with chimneys look elegant amidst greenery.

We are ushered into a canter. Incidentally on all the trips we have been to Kabini, we have never stayed in Kabini River Lodge. Canter which is a larger vehicle is the mode of transport if you are staying in any other place other than Kabini River lodge. If you are staying in Kabini river lodge, then you will be taken in smaller Jeeps.

We start and it is a quiet road flanked by forests as we reach the main gate of the park. From here we enter the park through forest roads.

We drive straight to the backwaters through the forest road. There is not much of water which helps. The driver takes the vehicle on the dry tracks to the edge of the water body. Kabini backwaters is a treasure trove of wild life. You don’t have to move from here anywhere and still see all wild animals!

The backwaters with broken trunks of trees look surreal.

Add to that the shadow play by the sun!…..

Our first sighting is huge herd of deer. There are hundreds. Scattered all over. It is a sight indeed!

Then the next was herd of elephants…..

And then appeared bisons……

There were few winged beauties as well……Painted Storks

We move on. The recent summer rains has rejuvenated the jungle. This is not good for wild life sighting as the waterholes gets filled up and chances of sighting big cats gets difficult.

Suddenly, out of the blue our naturalist asks the driver to stop the vehicle. We all are excited hoping that he has sighted a tiger. But we are not disappointed. He asks us to look at tree at a distance. A leopard is resting on the branch of a huge tree! It is at a distance and we could see it clearly through the binoculars. It is amazing to see how good these naturalists are in spotting the animals.

The leopard possibly has a kill and is resting after a hearty meal!

The naturalists are expert bird watchers too and keep showing us different types of lovely birds.

Driving in the forests and looking for elusive tiger is exciting as well as frustrating. We have been on many safaris in famed national parks in India only to come back disappointed. Tiger sighting is always luck.

Will we be lucky this time? The driver stops the vehicle and ask us to look at a bush. “Do you see a tiger?” He ask us. Yes. We could see a tiger sleeping behind the bush. We wait for the guy to get up. After few minutes, he gets up and vanish inside the bushes! We could see the fleeting image of the big cat……

We now return back and are picked up by the vehicle from our forest lodge. A lovely safari early in the morning is always refreshing start for the day.

After lunch we are ready to hop onto the evening safari. Will we be lucky this time? Will we get to see tiger in all its glory?

Evening Safari @ Kabini

We enter a different zone and this time we don’t go to back waters. Our first sighting is that of a langur.

We move around the jungle. There is not much of luck. Afternoon safaris generally are not great for sightings.

The naturalist gets a message on his cell phone. We could see enthusiasm on his face and the driver starts driving faster. It looks like there is some sighting.

We stop near a culvert on the road facing an expansive grassland. Lo and behold! What do we see? A Tiger sleeping in the middle!

Few more vehicles join and we all patiently wait. The cat is in deep slumber. He twists to the sides, gets up for few seconds and then go back to sleep. It is fun to watch the big cat in playful mood. Look at these pictures.

We had a feast of looking at the mighty cat from a close quarters. We now return back. Only to return for the last safari on the next day morning.

Morning Safari 2 @ Kabini

We are up and ready and reach the start point in time. The weather is perfect. Cloudy sky. A nip in the air. We start our safari in time hoping to see more big cats. Why can’t we be greedy!

We first sight a heard of wild boars.

This is followed by a sighting of a tusker. We watch the guy having fun. Taking mud bath. After few minutes he senses some one is watching him and gives a mock charge. Many in the vehicle are scared. The naturalist assures them not to worry as it is only a mock charge. We wait for some more time watching him and move on.

We see a big herd of deer. Few males are courting females! This looks like a mating season. The driver stops the vehicle and we watch the deer mating for the first time!

On the way, we notice a lovely family of samba deer.

The driver notices a pug mark. The naturalist feels that one of the big cats is somewhere around. We drive on and wait at Huli Kere or Tiger Pond. Both the naturalist and driver are certain that tiger will show up near the pond.

We wait. Samba deers show up first.

We notice an elephant slowly coming out of the bushes and walking towards the pond. He starts drinking water and take bath. He is now joined by another! They both stand next to each other and enjoy the bath. The setting is extraordinary. Pristine pond. Dead drop silence. Two elephants enjoying in the water!

Please check out this short video of the elephants here – https://youtu.be/WZBCGPLckT8

We return back. This morning we have not been lucky. Never mind. Tiger should only be an excuse to visit jungle. The experience of being there in the middle among the animals and see them in natural habitat is enriching indeed.

When we come back to the lodge, we meet others who had gone to another zone. And these guys were damn lucky with their sighting! One of them was a wild life photographers and you can notice it these pictures.

How we envy these damn guys……

We did not do boat safari this time due to low water levels. But we had done boat safari on our earlier visit two years back. Here are some pictures. The boat safari is a fantastic experience. For almost two and half hours you are treated to best of wild life. The surreal landscape of half-submerged trees, great variety of birds, crocodiles on the bank, elephants, deer or if you are lucky even the bigger cats on the bank! It is a lovely experience.

Please take a look at these pictures

Kabini Travel Information

By Air – The nearest airport is Bangalore. Kabini distance from Bangalore is 230 KMs

By Train – The convenient railway station is Mysore which is well-connected to other parts of the country.

By Road – Though there are government buses running from Mysore to Karapur – as Kabini is called, the best option is to drive to Kabini either in your own car or hire a car either from Bangalore or Mysore. Many resorts in Kabini can arrange cars to pick you up from Mysore. If you are driving yourself, then the roads are in excellent condition. If you are driving from Bangalore, take the route via Mysore. Check the Google map here –  https://goo.gl/maps/JagPuUaGZ4p

Stay Options

Kabini accommodation options are many. Kabini today have choices from luxurious Evolve Back – formerly Orange County – to workman like Kabini River Lodge. Kabini today like any other wild life destinations has also become a luxury destination. The accommodation in Kabini is bit expensive. But one does not have much choice on that.

Depending on your budget, you may choose any the wildlife resort/lodge. Whichever you choose, make sure they have permission to take you on three-hour jeep safari by Jungle Lodges and not one hour bus safari which is conducted by forest department. Resorts are allotted seats in the safari vehicles run by Jungle Lodges. Book the place only if they have permission for jeep safari. Also make sure you confirm your safari bookings with the resort before booking them

Of the available options to stay, Kabini river lodge comes with a free jeep safari and free boat safari as part of the package. Others will be charging extra for these. Kabini river lodge is most sought after and is a great value for money. One needs to book well in advance. Especially if you are targeting weekends.

Places like Kabini river lodge by Jungle Lodges , Water Woods  – the place we stayed when we came to Kabini way back in 2000 is now beautifully renovated, Red Earth , Sarai by Coffee day group and Bison Safari lodge are located on the banks of the backwaters with nice view of Kabini backwaters. Other properties like Kaav Safari Lodge   from the Kabini backwaters but located in lovely places.

Weekends are tough for getting accommodation unless you book well in advance. If you are planning on weekend, then plan well in advance.

You can do one and half hour bus safari by booking tickets online here if you are not staying at the place which does not have permit to take you for three hour safari. Book well in advance.

Pick your choice.

Here is a minimum and simple plan for you to explore Kabini

  • Leave Bangalore around 7 AM. Have BF on the way.
  • Reach your place of stay by 12 noon comfortably
  • Relax. Have lunch and get ready for afternoon boat safari around 3 PM. This is a 2 hour fabulous boat ride. Return, go around jungle lodges property and return to your place of stay. Enjoy the quiet evening
  • Get up early next day and get ready for morning land safari which starts between 6.30 AM and 7 AM. This is a 3 hour ride and it is fantastic and if you are lucky you will see big cats – tiger and leopard
  • Return back to your place of stay. Have BF. After BF leave for Bangalore and reach by late afternoon. Have lunch on the way.

Travel Tips

  • Kabini is a fantastic wild life destination. If you are looking for a real wild life experience this should be your first choice in South India.
  • This is an all the year round destination unlike many national parks in North India which are closed during monsoon months. Only time the park gets closed is due to wild fires in summer. Always check with your hotel on park conditions, safari etc.,
  • The best time to experience the park is between September to February when water level in backwater is high and boat safari is on. The jungle is green and lovely. Summer months of April – May are great for tiger sightings. But there may not be boat safari.
  • We strongly recommend you to go on weekdays for a quiet and less hurried experience. Weekends see lot of crowd from Bangalore.
  • Unfortunately, because of the lovely backwaters of Kabini reservoir, it has also become a luxury travel destination. Even if you are not a wild life enthusiast, you can definitely come to Kabini for a relaxation and rejuvenation.
  • Being wild life enthusiasts ourselves, we would recommend you to go for at least one jeep safari even if you are there for relaxation. Who knows you may be lucky and sight a tiger!
  • Carry a good hat, binoculars, camera while going on safaris. Make sure you don’t wear bright coloured clothes as well.
  • While on safari look round and listen to what the naturalist say. Be curious.
  • If you are planning multiple safaris, make sure you go to different zones each time. Talk to the naturalist in your hotel and make sure he ensures that.
  • Our recommendation is a stay of minimum of two nights. This will allow you to do two Jeep Safaris and one boat safari at the minimum which will help in good sighting.
  • Kabini can be comfortably clubbed with a trip to either Coorg or Wayanad or Ooty depending upon time at your disposal.
  • Boat safari will not happen during summers if the water level is low.
  • Some websites/agencies are promising Elephant safari. As far as we know, the elephant safari has been stopped for a long time. Even the website of Kabini River Lodge managed by Jungle Lodges – which is the sole agency for conducting safaris in Kabini – does not list Elephant safari as one of the activities.
  • What are the other things to do in Kabini? Kabini and surroundings has a lovely rural milieu. It is a lovely place for long walks on the roads or go for a bicycle rides. Some resorts have facility for Kayaking

Plan a trip to Kabini sometime for an enriching wildlife experience!

The Kabini Backwaters Forest Safari is an extremely popular experience conducted by the Karnataka Forest Department in the surreally beautiful Kabini River. There are various lodges and guest houses in the region through which you can enjoy a boat safari at Kabini as well and going on a Kabini safari on a boat in the Kabini river would be the perfect way to admire the lush green surroundings and nearby flora and fauna too.

On the smooth banks of the Kabini River, you may spot a herd of majestic Asiatic elephants peacefully bathing, feeding, having fun, and getting on with their incredible lives. Amongst the plethora of wildlife present on the river banks, you may observe smooth-coated otters playing in the water, marsh crocodiles lazing on the banks, as well as a myriad of ecstatic water birds dipping in and out of the beautiful backwaters.

A boat safari would surely be the most innovative and exciting way to explore the Kabini reserve and absorb its beauty. These safaris are operated by the jungle lodges and resorts of Kabini which are owned by the government of Karnataka. This is the most common and popular way to visit and explore the exceptionally beautiful and lavish forests of Kabini tiger reserve peacefully. You can make either a mini-bus or jeep Kabini safari booking to reach the heart of the forest, and take a wide look at the wilderness from up and close. By going on such a safari, you may get the opportunity to spot various wild animals like majestic tigers, leopards, elephants, and sambar deer, as well as birds like a peacock and crested hawk-eagle as well in the safari.

This jungle safari is controlled by various government authorities and hence, you have to follow certain terms and conditions when going on a Kabini safari like this one. Below are the various vehicle options you can find for the jungle safari and it is important that you carefully check out the details of each of them, and then opt to book the one that perfectly suits your requirements and budget respectively. Jeep Safaris Jeep safaris are operated by jungle lodges and resorts of Kabini itself. Kabini jeep safari booking can be made through the resorts you are staying in if they are associated with the forest department and your resort booking can get you a place on this safari, and its expenses are generally included in the tariff of the safari itself. Mini Bus Safaris Operated by the Forest Department, these are budget-friendly and are the ideal choice for people enjoying their trip with a large group of friends or family members.

The mini-bus safari runs twice each day, and these Kabini safari timings are from 6.30 am to 9.00 am and again in the afternoon from 3.30 pm to 6.00 pm on weekdays and the weekends, there are 4 safaris conducted at 6.00 a.m to 7.30 am, 7.30 am to 9.00 am and 3.00 pm to 4.30 pm, 4:30 pm to 6.00 pm later on in the day respectively. The tickets for these safaris have to be purchased from the Forest Department booking counter present at the Nagarhole National Park or can also be booked online. These counters open about 30 minutes before the start of the safari timings, and hence it is important to be on time to make the bookings for the safaris otherwise you will have to wait in a long queue.

The Nagarhole National Park has two distinctive safari zones which are Zone A and Zone B respectively. Zone B is close to the Kabini backwaters and the safari tours booked through Jungle Lodges and Resorts can cover only one of these zones at a time whereas, on the other hand, the Forest Department safaris enjoy unrestricted access to both of these beautiful zones. You can stay at our resort in Kabini and enjoy these safaris during the daytime. The boat, as well as the vehicular Kabini jungle safari bookings, can be made easily through your resort if you are staying in one of the tourism department lodges during your visit.

Alternatively, you can book your Kabini jungle safari (on a canter) by visiting the Dammanakatte Forest Department office in Antharasanthe in Karnataka. This office is located close to the forest gate of Kabini tiger reserve but you shall need a valid government ID card for verification to make your bookings from here. In recent times, the Forest Department has launched an online booking facility for a Kabini safari at the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve website which is www.nagaraholetigerreserve.com. This Kabini jungle safari online booking facility has become a huge boon for tourists visiting Kabini. For a long time, to book a canter safari, wildlife enthusiasts had to sometimes stand in a huge queue at Damanakatte but now, the online booking facility now allows people to avoid any long queues and enables them to make their bookings within just a few minutes.

Moreover, as you can make Kabini jungle safari online booking right from your home, you do not have to waste a single moment of the tour standing in queues, and shall be able to enjoy your holidays optimally by engaging in diverse and highly exciting activities amidst the enthralling greenery and natural beauty of this surreal wonderland in the state of Karnataka.
