The biggest and brightest, 60-year old star on Las Vegas Boulevard won't be found in a glitzy Strip resort showroom, but sits in the middle of the road, surrounded by traffic, under the sound of incoming planes.

Since 1959, the 25-foot-tall, "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign has become the legendary marker point for vehicles arriving from the west, signaling the true starting point of a Sin City adventure. The 24-hour, totally free attraction is recognizable around the world, luring countless tourists, newlyweds, and social media mavens every year.

Designed by Betty Willis for the Western Neon company, she chose not to trademark her iconic, ’50s style design, but gift the logo to the city. That’s one reason why you'll see it on plastered on every imaginable type of souvenir at shops across the region.

YESCO, another legendary sign company, now maintains the attraction and you'll probably only notice their logo once you get up close. You also might have missed that the letters spelling "Welcome," are positioned over seven "lucky" silver dollars, a nod to Nevada's nickname as the "Silver State."

Incredibly popular, if only as an enviable check-in on social media, a live feed provided by Earthcam will give you a handy real-time clue as to how many people already made the same plans as you. 

Located on the far, far southern end of the Strip, technically located within the unincorporated town of Paradise, drivers arriving from California will need to make a U-turn to gain access to the parking lot, only accessible on the west-bound side of Las Vegas Boulevard. Ride-share drivers will also be dropping off and picking up, and taxis are frequently waiting to take visitors back to the Strip. With only a dozen parking spaces, you could be waiting a while before you turn off your engine. Patience and early arrival are a year-round solid tip.

If you are bold enough to walk the three-quarters of a mile from the Mandalay Bay resort's front entrance, remember you might also be standing on line for a photo in the un-shaded desert heat before walking that same, rather dull three-quarter of a mile back to air-conditioned comfort. It's a good idea to have sunscreen and some water handy.

Depending on the time of day, be prepared for a long line of fellow tourists anxiously waiting for their moment to strike a pose. There is absolutely no fee, and anyone asking or expecting to be paid to take a photo is not authorized to do so. If you decide to take a picture with one of the unofficial showgirls, Elvis impersonators, or costumed characters, they do expect a tip.

At night, the crowd disappears, the temperature cools, and the sign truly pops against the inky black sky. But if you have an old digital camera or phone, be warned, the harsh contrast of light and dark might be too sensitive for your old electronics. Take a look at your screen before you leave to check if the brightness of the white cabinet has drowned out all the details in your photo. And be extra careful of the cars as you leave the parking lot. Las Vegas traffic is notoriously treacherous once the sun goes down.

Tips for Visiting

Be a good neighbor, and if someone asks you take a photo of them, give them a hand. For many, this is a genuine once in a lifetime visit. Take a couple of extra camera clicks as a back-up. You'd want them to do the same for you.

Common sense will tell you not to physically grab at the electrically wired pylon, although there is a little known way to legally and safely take a piece of the signage home with you. Since 2006, the Official Las Vegas Light company has been selling the actual yellow, incandescent light bulbs that were cheerfully glowing while you snapped a picture. They even detail the exact location on the sign your bulb was positioned. Position it on a shelf next to your framed selfie and display a unique souvenir of your visit. And then, as the back of the sign reads, "Come Back Soon."

On your trip to Las Vegas, one attraction you probably want to visit is the iconic “Welcome To Las Vegas” sign. One of the most well-known landmarks in the world, this deco sign, built back in 1959, attracts millions of visitors every year and is a must-do in Sin City. The sign stands 25-feet-tall and its iconic design includes seven white neon circles representing silver dollars as a nod to the Nevada state nickname, “Silver State.” The Las Vegas sign has been photographed far and wide for over 60 years. It’s still one of the best selfie spots in all of Las Vegas! Here are five tips for visiting.

1. Visit In The Morning For Fewer Crowds

I know — it’s Vegas — time to party the night away and sleep in. But, if you want to avoid crowds, get to the Las Vegas sign early. We went around 8 a.m. and there was literally no one there when we arrived. Since we had the place to ourselves, we felt free to pose for all kinds of dorky pictures. And with no line of people waiting, we were free to take our time and snap a whole lot of photos. With people waiting, I’d have been pressed to hurry and take a couple of pictures and let the next person have their turn. But by going early, we felt no pressure to get in and out quickly. Another huge benefit to going early is you’ll beat the Vegas heat. There is no shade at the sign and Las Vegas is typically hot and sunny. If you go early, you won’t have to worry about excessive heat or sun.

2. It Is Free To Visit

As the saying goes, not many things in life are free. But visiting the Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas sign won’t cost you a cent. Along with the Bellagio fountains and the Fremont Street Experience , this is another spectacular Vegas freebie. That’s right, there is no charge to visit the Las Vegas sign.

3. Visit From The Airport 

The Las Vegas sign is located in the median on the south end of the famous Las Vegas Strip , just south of Mandalay Bay Casino. The exact address is 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South. The sign is less than 10 minutes from Harry Reid International Airport. We decided to make the visit to the Las Vegas sign our first stop after landing. The drive from the airport to the sign was super easy and since our flight landed around 7 a.m., we knew the sign wouldn’t be crowded. 

Try to plan your visit to the sign around your flight arrival. Even if you’re not landing early, you can do a drive-by on the way to your hotel to check out the line situation, and if it’s not busy, stop in. There is a small parking lot right within the median that fills up fast. But if you go early like we did, you won’t have any problems finding a parking spot.

4. You Don’t Necessarily Have To Drive To The Sign 

If you don’t have a car in Las Vegas, you can still visit the Las Vegas sign. The Las Vegas city bus system is a good one. The Deuce runs from downtown to the Strip and vice versa, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Both the northbound and southbound routes offer stops at the Las Vegas sign. The Deuce also makes stops at almost every other tourist destination up and down the Strip. We’ve ridden the Deuce numerous times and it’s a good alternative to renting a car. The 3-day bus pass is only around $20, so it’s much cheaper than renting a car and not having to deal with traffic saves my sanity. But, of course, you’re dependent on the bus schedule. The Deuce will get you to the Las Vegas sign and many other hot spots around town, but it won’t do it quickly. So you’re basically trading time for money. Still, it’s interesting to ride around with other tourists and locals, and the convenience of not having to find parking or pay for an Uber might be worth it. 

At the other end of the spectrum is renting a limo. We’ve had friends that grabbed a limo when they landed at Harry Reid International Airport, booked it for an hour, and had the driver go straight to the sign. After taking all the amazing photos they wanted, they jumped back into the limo and were dropped off at their hotel. Considering they were all done in less than an hour, this could be a super-fun, not-too-over-the-top way to begin a Vegas trip.

5. Bring Your Camera Or Phone For Photos

There is no professional photographer on site at the Las Vegas sign. So, you will be taking your own photos. If you made the effort to get to the Las Vegas sign, you might as well take a ton of photos while you’re there. It can take a few snaps to get that perfect shot. I brought my selfie stick and was glad I did. Using the selfie stick is so much better than trying to cram your group into the photo while someone tries to stretch their arm a mile out to hold the phone. Just grab your portable selfie stick, set the timer on your phone, and you’ll get a great shot of your group. You can always ask another tourist to snap your photo, and most will be glad to assist, but if there’s no one around, you’ll be happy to have your selfie stick. 

Unless you’re an experienced photographer, you may want to avoid taking photos of the Las Vegas sign at night. It’s tricky to get a good photo with the glare of the lights from the sign, although, it is cool to see the fabulous sign all lit up at night. If you want to try nighttime photography, I’d recommend going a little earlier than sunset so you can take pictures before it’s dark, just in case your after-dark shots don’t turn out as good as you expected.

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign: Where It Is and Why You Should Visit It

The iconic, notorious and down-right famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign” marks the beginning of every visitor’s journey to the City of Lights, filling each and every person with an excitement that is truly undeniable.

Conceived and commissioned by salesman Ted Rogich of Western Neon, who was inspired by the glitzy neon signs of hotels , casinos, and restaurants, the design was appointed to a commercial artist, Betty Willis, who gained fame for the iconic piece later in life than would be expected. She saw the sign as her gift to the city, thus, it was never trademarked and is the reason for its replication across a plethora of Las Vegas merchandise. 

When the 1970s hit, the era of neon signs was on its way out and the area surrounding the sign soon gave rise to superstructures, rendering the sign temporarily obsolete. But supposedly a motel owner, John Woodrum, ran a power line to the sign and resurrected the ‘dead’ landmark in front of his new property, propelling it into the limelight as the recognizable motif we know and love today.

Designed in the Googie architectural style that peaked in popularity in the 1940s and 1950s, the sign harks back to the futuristic, Space Age style that was highly influenced by car culture, and the Atomic Age, characterized by daring shapes and flamboyant signage. These styles gave the sign its twinkling silver dollars and mismatched fonts lined with yellow intermittent light bulbs, topped with an eight-pointed star that really brought home the fabulousness of old Vegas. The seven silver dollars are said to be a symbol of good luck for those entering the world’s gambling capital!

If you feel like you’re seeing déjà vu as you navigate the city, you wouldn’t be mistaken! Las Vegas Boulevard is home to a replica that was erected in 2002 that sits just inside the city’s limits and reads “Welcome to Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas” and in 2007 another replica was installed near Boulder Highway’s casino-laden strip.

2019 marks its 60th anniversary and it can still be found sparkling in all its glory on the median at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South, the unofficial boundary of the Las Vegas strip, marking guests arrival into the infamous Sin City.

It may seem like an odd question but it’s a valid one! Surprisingly enough, the sign is actually located in Paradise, Nevada, as well as much of the old Vegas strip. Located south of Mandalay Bay on Las Vegas Boulevard South, it’s technically four miles south of the official center of Las Vegas.

Can you walk to the Las Vegas sign?

Yes, the iconic sign is just under one mile south of Mandalay Bay so this is certainly an option. Alternatively, there are a number of free trams that go near its location if you’re staying at one of the casinos owned by MGM Grand, from where it is then a short walk from Mandalay Bay. 

The best choice is to park in the Clark County parking lot which was added in 2008 to aid in the convenience of reaching the sign. It’s also now a lot safer, featuring crosswalks and pedestrian traffic systems.

What hotel is the Las Vegas sign near?

The Las Vegas sign sits across from the Bali Hai Golf Club and the now-closed Klondike Hotel and Casino on its west side. Its closest hotel is now the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, a 43-storey luxury resort owned and operated by MGM Resorts International. 

When the sign was originally built, the Mandalay site was home to the Hacienda which was a one-story building that operated from 1956 to 1996. It was in March 1999, that the Mandalay Bay was established.

The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign is one of the most recognizable pieces of signage in U.S. history. The sign’s designer, artist Betty Willis, was a native of Las Vegas. She grew up along 7th Street, which is now part of downtown. She lived in Nevada until she died in April 2015, at the age of 91. Betty came across many obstacles in her career as a sign maker, as it was predominantly a male trade. However, her passion for her profession and art trumped any difficulties she came across. During her career, she also designed the signage for the Moulin Rouge, the first desegregated hotel and casino in Las Vegas.

Betty Willis was working at Western Neon when she designed the famous sign; the county purchased the sign through salesman Ted Rogich. It was meant to reflect the spirit of Las Vegas and welcome weary visitors to the place where all of their fantasies could (and still can) come true. The flashing lights represent the flashing lights of the Las Vegas Strip, and the silver-dollar letters symbolize the luck that all visitors hope befalls them during their trip.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a long-time Vegas vet, the welcome sign is a source of hope, happiness and good times. The feeling you get from seeing it is pure fabulous-ness! 

But have you ever wondered why it was created? Or even when? 

Betty Willis, one of the first female commercial artists to work on neon signs, designed the now landmark in 1959. This was the same time Paul Anka, Johnny Horton, and Bobby Darin were at the top of the music charts! Willis attended art school and after graduation, found work creating ads for local casinos. She was approached by local businessman Ted Rogich who thought the city needed its own flashy sign to advertise itself amidst all the great entertainment and casinos in the area. 

When Willis designed the Vegas sign, she sold it to Clark County – without copyrighting it – for a whopping $4,000. She called it a gift to her hometown and didn’t create it to get rich. That’s why the sign is duplicated across every type of souvenir – from t-shirts, to keychains, the sign has become an icon! 

This 25-foot-tall welcome has become one of the best selfie spots in the city. Making it a “must see” when you travel, both sides are there to greet you and send you off. You can even park your car now and admire the sign in peace.

The silver circles that spell out “welcome” represent silver dollars as a salute to Nevada as the “Silver State.” But how does it light up? In 2014, Clark County installed solar panels by the sign that provide enough solar-powered energy to power the sign all day long. This is great that this landmark can “go green” and still provide that welcome greeting for visitors.

In 1959, graphic designer Betty Willis dreamed up the concept of the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign from her hometown of Overton, Nevada. Her portfolio includes neon signs like the Moulin Rouge sign and Del Mar hotel, among many others.

She curated the design at the request of Ted Rogich, a WWII veteran and local salesman who believed the city needed a new way to advertise itself. Western Neon erected the sign and kept the landmark standing for locals and lovers of Las Vegas to visit on the famed boulevard stretch.

Betty Willis and Western Neon sold the sign to Clark County after its completion. Although Willis passed away in 2017, her work lives on. The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is a cultural landmark that is replicated all over the world in various forms of media.

• There used to be two additional signs outside of the original Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. The second Las Vegas sign stood on Boulder Highway from 2002 to 2016, when the sign was eliminated by a roadside accident. Now, the true second sign reading “Welcome to Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas” sits on Fremont Street . Catch the sign while walking down this famous street.
• The Welcome to Las Vegas sign is 25 feet tall, with four angles pointed in a diamond shape. A star highlights the top and bottom angles of the diamond, and the side angles are rounded pointing to the west side and east side of Vegas.
• The sign was registered in the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, 50 years after its inception.
• The sign is technically outside of the Las Vegas city limits, but close enough to consider it part of the infrastructure. It is located in the county of Paradise, Nevada.
• The circles that house the “Welcome” allegedly represent silver dollars, as a nod to Nevada’s nickname “The Silver State.”
• The sign has been owned by the Young Electric Sign Company, or YESCO, since its creation. YESCO is a multinational company with almost 50 offices in North America that has played a key role in creating some of the most famous signage in the country.
• The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is not copyrighted, so anyone can use it for their signage or gift shop merchandise. Find it on license plates, keychains and other souvenirs.

Getting to the Las Vegas Sign

It may be a trek, but it’s possible to walk to the Fabulous Las Vegas sign from the Strip itself. The sign sits less than a mile from Mandalay Bay and the rest of the Las Vegas Strip resorts .

There is a small parking lot near the fabulous Las Vegas sign with roughly three dozen parking spots available. Several tour buses make stops at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign. A Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour , which takes visitors all over the city, will stop to let you capture photos of other landmark sites and spots in Clark County and beyond.

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign is an iconic Vegas landmark that is one of the most photographed sites in the city.

The 25-foot-tall roadside sign is a diamond shape stretched horizontally and is lit up with bright neon lights that offer both a welcome greeting as well as a “Drive Carefully Come Back Soon” goodbye on the backside.

The Welcome to Las Vegas sign is just north of the stone pillars at McCarran International Airport and right across from the Bali Hai Golf Club and the now-closed Klondike Hotel and Casino.

The sign is considered by some to be the southernmost part of the Las Vegas Strip, but it is actually four miles outside of the Las Vegas city limits.

Welcome to Las Vegas Sign History

Betty Willis designed the Welcome to Las Vegas sign as her gift to the city and a piece of public domain artwork. The Young Electric Sign Company is the current owner of the sign and leases it Clark County.

The sign is not copyrighted , which is why it is used in so many different types of Las Vegas Souvenirs.

In 2009 the sign was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2013 it made it onto the State Register of Historic Places as well.

Before 2008, access to the site was limited and risky, with no legal places to park and many lanes of traffic needing to be crossed to reach the site. Site improvements in 2008 added a median to allow official public access safely.

The parking lot was added as well as a path that helps visitors get to the sign viewing area.

The parking lot was expanded several times over the last decade and now includes more than 40 spaces and traffic signals to help large groups of pedestrians get across the lanes of traffic on Las Vegas Boulevard safely.

Las Vegas Sign Events

Several notable events have happened at the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign, including being host of the largest bikini parade, which made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.

In October 2017, following the terrible Las Vegas mass shooting, artist Greg Zanis made 58 crosses with hearts that were then placed behind the sign.

Each of the crosses represented one of the victims of the massacre.

Las Vegas Sign  – Replica Signs

There have been a few different replicas created of the sign over the years.

In 2002 a replica sign that read “ Welcome to Downtown Las Vegas ” was put up on Las Vegas Boulevard and 4th Street but was destroyed four years later when it was hit by a pickup truck.

Another replica sign for Downtown Las Vegas currently hands on the Fremont Street Experience SlotZilla Zipline .

A third replica was created in 2007 and installed on Boulder Highway to mark the entrance to the line of casinos off Tropicana Boulevard and Boulder Highway.

People have been visiting the sign basically since its placement in 1959. Oh! Fun fact: the sign didn’t have a designated parking lot or a place for visitors to strike a pose until 2008. So people were literally dodging traffic for a pic with the legendary landmark. Shout out to the city for realizing that a real-life game of Frogger was bad for business. There are two main factors to consider when choosing when to visit the Las Vegas Sign — the crowds and the weather. Both of which can make the experience less than enjoyable if you go at the wrong time.

Let’s talk about the crowds first. To avoid them, early morning is the best time to go, and by early, we mean early — like between 6 am and 8 am early. Las Vegas is called Sin City for a reason, and many people are sleeping in, recovering from the night before. If you’re not keen on getting up and out that early, definitely aim for before noon.

Late afternoon can also be a good time in regard to crowds, but then, you’re facing the weather. Midday, at least in the summer months, is scorching hot.

Take our word for it when we say you don’t want to be waiting in a long line outside with crowds of strangers in the sweltering heat. Fall and spring offer a nice reprieve from the heat and are a perfect time to visit, especially in the late afternoon.

Photography Tips at the Sign

If you’re making a trip to the sign, and waiting in line to get up close, you definitely want to take advantage of the photo op. Las Vegas sign pics are iconic, but there are a few tips we think are helpful.

Another reason to visit in the early hours of the morning is that the rising sun in Las Vegas is beautiful and offers the perfect lighting for your photos. If an early morning visit is in the cards, sunset also offers wonderful lighting, but the line will be longer.

Think about the photo you want to take ahead of time so that you have a game plan when you get your turn at the sign. Maybe you just want to say cheese and smile, which is great. But if you’re thinking of something more elaborate, have a plan in place.

The sign is about 25 feet tall, which makes it perfect for both close-ups and pics that are a little further away with the sign in the background. A selfie stick can help you capture the perfect shot since there isn’t always someone there to take the photo for you.

There are photographers who will hang out at the sign and take your picture for a fee. These are professionals who just show up, so there isn’t a schedule or any reliable regularity. You’re more likely to find them at busier times.

Someone else you might find at the Las Vegas sign is Elvis or other performers. Is there anything more iconic than a pic of the sign with Elvis? Yes, we have one or two of these photos ourselves. They might not charge to take a picture with you, but it is a common courtesy to tip.

Parking and Accessibility

Free parking is available in a lot that’s adjacent to the Las Vegas sign. The lot contains about three dozen parking spaces, including ADA-accessible spots. Best of all, the parking is completely free, which is a rare find in Las Vegas.

The parking lot can get crowded, especially during peak times. There isn’t a time limit for parking there, but it’s smart not to overstay your welcome. Spend as much time as you want at the sign and the area, but then move along so that someone else can snag a parking spot. In other words, don’t keep your car here all day while you wander around.

Unlike other parking lots and structures that require turns onto backroads, the only way to get into this lot is from Las Vegas Blvd (aka The Strip).

How the Sign Has Changed Over the Years

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign became a fixture on Las Vegas Blvd in 1959. As it’s nearing its 65th birthday, we became curious about how the sign may have changed over the years. Our research led to some interesting tidbits.

First, the sign wasn’t always as popular as it is today. For the longest time, it was barely given a thought, and in the late 90s, there were whispers that the sign had become dated, irrelevant even. In the early 2000s, something changed, and the sign experienced a surge in popularity. Perhaps inspired by our fascination with everything kitsch and retro.

While the sign looks strikingly similar to the original, it has had a few facelifts over the years. Parts of it are still original, or at least suspected to be. It’s thought that the classic yellow frame, the blue poles that hold it up, the famous star, and the circles that hold the word ‘welcome’ are all original.

However, wear, tear, and vandalism have demanded that the face of the sign be replaced over the years. Still, the sign maintains its original personality and has found its way to the bucket list of countless visitors to Sin City.

Tours That Go To the Las Vegas Sign

Joining a tour is a great way to see the sights in and around Las Vegas. There are a number of tours that make a stop at the sign, giving passengers the opportunity to jump out and snap a pic or two.

A favorite of ours, especially for first-time visitors to the city, is the Big Bus Tour . This tour hits all the key spots and offers unlimited hop-on/hop-off privileges.

Most tickets are valid for 48 hours, so you can ride the entire loop, spotting areas you want to stop at (like the Las Vegas sign), and then hit them all on your next trip. Buses depart every 30 minutes from 10 am until 5 pm.

If you’re thinking of something a little more glam, a limo tour is a great option. We like to suggest a limo tour with a personal photographer, especially for groups and special occasions, like bachelorette parties.

Finally, there are tours that take you to destinations outside of Las Vegas, like the Grand Canyon or the Seven Magic Mountains. Often, these tours will stop at the Las Vegas sign either on the way out of town or on the return trip.

Other Las Vegas Sign

On the opposite end of the Strip is another Las Vegas sign called the Gateway Arches. This is a newer, more modern gateway into the city that was erected in 2016. It sits near the STRAT with the Observation Deck to the east. It serves as a sort of portal between the Strip and Downtown Las Vegas.

In true Vegas style, the arches are huge and glittering. You can’t miss them even if you try. The arches feature more than 13,000 lights, with each arch extended 140 feet as it crosses over the Strip. Due to its size and location, you can’t pose directly in front of it like the other sign, but you can snap pictures of it in the background from certain walkways in the area.

Then, if you wander down just a little further to Main Street, you’ll come face to face with the new showgirls sign. Each decked-out lady stands 50 feet tall with the words “City of Las Vegas” below them.

How far is the sign from major hotels on the Strip?

The Vegas sign is 1 to 6 miles from the major Strip hotels. Mandalay Bay is the closest, and the Strat is the furthest.

Can I take wedding or event photos at the sign?

You can take wedding and event photos at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign, but be prepared for crowds and limited space.

One of the most popular sights in Las Vegas is the “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. Unlike the magnificent fountain show at Bellagio and other famous things to see in Las Vegas, it’s not located right in the middle of the action. The iconic Las Vegas Sign is technically located on the world famous Las Vegas Strip, but it’s isolated and away from everything else you’ll see in Las Vegas. The sign was added to the Nevada State Register of Historic Places in 2013, and was erected in 1959. The sign was designed by Betty Willis and was a gift to the city.

The “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign is located about one mile south of Mandalay Bay. The sign is easiest to reach when driving a car. The catch with driving is that you can only access the sign parking area when driving south on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Las Vegas Sign – How To Get There

If you’re driving to the Vegas Strip from Los Angeles, M Resort, South Point, or Silverton you’ll have to make a U-Turn after seeing the sign. There’s only an entrance to the parking lot for the sign heading south on Las Vegas Boulevard. The parking lot only has room for 12 cars so you might have to wait for a parking space on a busy day or night.

If you’re not driving while in Las Vegas you can take an Uber, Lyft or Taxi. While returning back to the action will be quick and easy with Uber and Lyft , you might have to wait for a taxi. This mode of transportation is probably the easiest way to access the “Welcome To Las Fabulous Las Vegas” sign.

Walk – Las Vegas Sign

If you’d rather not spend money on a car service to visit the iconic sign, you may be able to walk. The sign is just under one mile south of Mandalay Bay. If you’re staying at a casino in the center or north end of the Vegas Strip you can take the monorail to MGM Grand and cross the street to Excalibur and take a free tram to Mandalay Bay. You can also take the free tram from Bellagio to Monte Carlo then walk to Excalibur and take the free tram to Mandalay Bay. However, you’ll still have a walk of nearly one mile once you get to Mandalay Bay.

Walking may not be a good idea during the summer. Temperatures often reach well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit ( during the day. You’ll still be in the sun for a while after walking to the sign. After your walk, you may have to stand in line to take a photo by the sign. For some reason, there’s no shaded canopy while you wait. The line for photos at the “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign can take up to an hour on a busy day or night.

Bus – Las Vegas Sign

One of the least expensive ways to get around the Las Vegas is the RTC bus system. Buses arrive at stops approximately every 15 minutes. Fares start around $3 ( transit fare information ) and passes may be purchased for multiple days. The Deuce runs all the way from downtown Las Vegas to the “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign and beyond. Just be certain to consult the schedule for updates.

Tram and Uber – Las Vegas Sign

While the following method isn’t free it may be the most efficient way to get there. This hybrid approach will have you take the tram to Mandalay Bay. You’ll then use Uber to drive the mile to and from the sign. Since rates for Uber and Lyft do adjust, you can find an estimate of your Uber Trip or Lyft Trip estimate in advance. Taxis are even more expensive. For completeness you can also use the Las Vegas Monorail for part of your journey.

Las Vegas Sign – No Fee, Sometimes a Wait For a Picture

There’s no fee to visit the “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign and take photos. However, it will take a little time and cost a few dollars to get there. If you’d like to take personal photos below the sign, you’ll very likely have to wait in a line. Depending on when you visit the wait can be just a few minutes or about an hour. Early risers should consider visiting in the morning before the rest of Las Vegas wakes up. Not only will lines be shorter early in the morning but it won’t be as hot.

How Many “Welcome to Las Vegas” Signs Are There? (Explained)

Las Vegas has several things it’s well known for, like gambling and live entertainment. However, one of the most recognizable sights in the city is the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign. But just how many “Welcome to Las Vegas” signs are there?

There have been three main “Welcome to Las Vegas” signs over the years. The original is on Las Vegas Boulevard South. The second was a replica on Las Vegas Blvd. downtown, but it was destroyed. And the third is on Boulder Highway, welcoming visitors driving from Arizona.

In this article, I’ll tell you about the three “Welcome to Las Vegas” signs, where they are, and well as some history about the original sign. I’ll also show you a couple of interesting variations of the sign that you can find around town.  

Where Are the “Welcome to Las Vegas” Signs?

The Las Vegas sign is a famous landmark, and even if you haven’t visited it, you’ve likely seen it in pictures or other media. But is it always the same sign you see? Or are there others in the city waiting to be explored?

For over 40 years, there was only one “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign. Erected in 1959, it was the original sign that still stands today on the south end of the Strip in Paradise, Nevada, which is not officially in Las Vegas .

Then, in 2002, the City of Las Vegas built a replica that was actually within the city’s limits. Finally, the city built another replica on Boulder Highway in 2007 as the casinos on the “ Boulder Strip ” wanted their own sign. 

Here are the locations of the “Welcome to Las Vegas” signs in order from oldest to newest:

• 5100 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89119 (the original sign)
• Las Vegas Boulevard and 4th Street (was destroyed and is no longer there)
• Boulder Highway, just north of Tropicana Avenue (newest sign)

While these are the most well-known “Welcome to Las Vegas” signs, you’ll likely see versions of the sign all over the city, especially on souvenirs like t-shirts. The sign and its design are not copyrighted, so anyone can replicate the sign without any legal consequences. 

A couple of the most popular versions of the sign have a slightly modified saying, such as the “Welcome to Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada.” at the entrance to the Fremont Street Experience in downtown . 

The sign looks slightly different from the official sign, but it was still inspired by the original. This version of the sign is 20’ (6.10 m) wide. 

You can also see another variation of the sign at the Chapel of the Flowers , which reads, “M a rried in Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada.” The sign is a popular place for newly married couples to snap a picture after they get married at the chapel.

The History of the Original “Welcome to Las Vegas” Sign

Artist Betty Willis, who worked for Western Neon, an electronic display company, designed the sign in 1959. Many people do not know that a woman designed the sign. Unfortunately, she passed away at the age of 91 in 2015. 

She decided not to copyright the sign, as she wanted it to be her gift to the city. She later said that if she had copyrighted the sign, it probably would not have been as popular and recognizable as it is today. 

The Young Electric Sign Company bought Western Neon , Willis’ employer, in the 1960s. They still own the sign today, and it is actually on lease to Clark County, where the sign and Las Vegas are located. 

While Willis never earned any money after creating and not copyrighting the sign, her company did since they owned and leased it. 

The sign joined the National Register of Historic Places list on May 1st, 2009, and it’s on Nevada’s State Register of Historic Places. The state added the sign to the list on December 6th, 2013. 

Destruction of the Sign at Las Vegas Boulevard and 4th Street

The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, built within the city limits on Las Vegas Boulevard in 2002, was destroyed in 2016 when a truck crashed into the sign at 6:50 AM on July 17th, 2016. The driver of the car was fine and not injured, and no others were involved in the accident. 

However, the sign did not survive the crash. It was torn down and has not been replaced to this day. Fortunately, the sign was only a replica and not the original one designed by Willis. 

The Original “Welcome to Las Vegas” Sign Today

The Las Vegas sign is hard to miss, as it is 25’ (7.62 m) tall and in the middle of one of the most well-known streets in the world. Tourists flock to the sign to take a picture and commemorate their visit to the city. 

However, until 2008, crossing the street was the only way to get to the sign. As this was a safety risk to everyone, the city opened a parking lot and a paved walkway to make access to the sign safer and easier. 

The parking lot was expanded again in 2012 and 2015 to add more parking spaces.

Get A Piece of The Vegas Sign as a Souvenir

You can always visit Las Vegas and get a picture with the sign or a t-shirt or other souvenir with the sign on it. Or, if you want a unique way to remember the city or sign, you can buy a light bulb that has been used in the original “Welcome to Las Vegas Sign.” 

These lights come with a certificate of authenticity stating their burn date and which light slot they were in. There are only 89 of these lightbulbs used at a time in the sign, and they last quite a while, so having one is somewhat rare and would make for a great remembrance or gift.

How Many “Welcome to Las Vegas” Signs – Conclusion

Today there is one official “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign on Las Vegas Boulevard and one replica sign on Boulder Highway. And a trip to Las Vegas just wouldn’t be complete without making a visit to the original sign on the Strip.

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign is located on Las Vegas Boulevard on the southern side of the city, around 1 mile south of the main strip. You can drive right up to the sign to see it up close and park nearby for this unique photo opportunity.

The Las Vegas Sign is a must-see whether you're visiting Sin City to try your luck at the casinos, to see an iconic performer live on stage, or to tour unique landmarks like the Bellagio Fountains. Keep on reading to find out how to reach the sign from downtown Las Vegas or from outside Nevada.

Where is the Las Vegas Sign located?

The Las Vegas Sign a bold and colorful sight that's appeared in films, TV shows and music videos - a true cultural icon. In fact, it's such a notable part of the city that in 2009 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

As you might expect, you'll find the 'Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas' Sign on one of the main routes into the city. It sits on the median (central reservation) of Las Vegas Boulevard on the southern side of the city.

If you're starting out in the city, it's around 1 mile south of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, with parking located just a few feet beyond the sign. You can also walk along the sidewalk from the Strip to the Las Vegas Sign, as there's a pedestrian crossing right by the sign.

How to drive up to the Las Vegas Sign

You'll probably have pictured your arrival into Las Vegas, cruising past the famous sign as you enter the city. The great news is that it's fairly straightforward to reach, but there are a few things to keep in mind before setting out.

Heading towards the city, you'll drive past the sign if you leave I-15 at exit 33 then turn left onto Las Vegas Boulevard. However, if you want to stop to see the sign up close and take some photos, you'll have to turn back on yourself to access the parking lot.

It's actually easier to drive to the Las Vegas sign if you follow Las Vegas Boulevard south past Mandalay Bay Convention Center. Then simply keep left and pull over when you reach the parking lot, which you'll find on the median.

Once you reach the parking lot, you can walk to the sign and spend as long as you like enjoying this cultural icon.

Driving up to the Las Vegas Sign from Los Angeles

It's a relatively short road trip from Los Angeles to neighboring Nevada, where Las Vegas is located. It's around 270 miles by road and takes 4 hours to drive in good traffic. Simply head east out of LA to pick up I-15, which then takes you all the way to Las Vegas.

The most direct way to drive up to the Las Vegas Sign is to leave I-15 at Exit 35 then take a right onto W Russell Road. Here you'll see Mandalay Bay Convention Center on your left.

Next, turn right at the traffic lights opposite the Pinball Hall of Fame. The sign will soon come into view as you make your way south along Las Vegas Boulevard. Stay in the left lane to pull into the parking lot immediately after the sign.

If you want to drive past the sign before stopping to take a picture, then there's an alternative way to reach the sign. Leave I-15 at Exit 33 then join Las Vegas Boulevard heading north.

Once you've driven past the Las Vegas Sign, go past the next traffic lights with the Harley Davidson Dealership on your right. You can't do a U-turn at these lights, but stay in the left lane here and just a few meters further along the road you'll be able to turn onto Las Vegas Boulevard heading south.

Reaching the Las Vegas Sign from Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is northeast of Las Vegas. To reach Sin City from here, you'll travel southwest through Utah, a 430-mile journey by road which will take around 6 hours to drive.

Interstate 15 connects Salt Lake City with Las Vegas. Once you reach Vegas, leave I-15 at exit 36 for Russell Road then turn right at the traffic lights beside the Mandalay Convention Center.

Stay left as you drive south along Las Vegas Boulevard. You'll see the back of the Las Vegas Sign first, then immediately pull over into the parking lot.

If you're heading back into the city, take the next U-turn to head back in the direction of Mandalay Bay.

Drive to the Las Vegas Sign from Phoenix

The 300-mile drive through the cactus-lined desert landscapes of Arizona makes for a great road trip from Phoenix to Las Vegas.

To begin the 4-hour 45 minute-drive, head northeast out of Phoenix on US-60 then join US-93 at Wickenburg. After a short stretch following I-40 west, you're back on US-93 which becomes I-11 once you arrive in Nevada, right after crossing the Colorado River near the Hoover Dam.

Follow I-11 through Boulder City and Henderson before joining I-293, which takes you around the southern edge of Las Vegas. You'll then follow I-15 north for around a quarter of a mile, following signs for Russell Road and Frank Sinatra Drive.

Exit the interstate onto Russell Road then turn right opposite the Pinball Hall of Fame to find the sign. Make a u–turn at a safe place and head north towards The Strip if staying there.

The best viewing spot for the Las Vegas Sign

As you've already read, it's easiest to stop to see the Las Vegas Sign by driving south on Las Vegas Boulevard.

If you're heading south from the Strip, you'll actually see the back of the famous sign from the road. It's on the way out of the city, so rather than welcoming you to the city you'll see "Drive Carefully. Come Back Soon" as you drive past.

Don't worry though - you'll get the chance to see both sides of the sign once you've pulled up in the parking lot. This is the best place to stop and see the Las Vegas Sign as you can walk right up to it and take photos without three lanes of traffic in the foreground.

It's easy, safe and free to take a photo at the Las Vegas Sign. In fact, the biggest issue you'll face here is the crowds. You can expect to wait in line for around 10 minutes on weekdays if you go in the afternoon, or even longer at weekends.

Can you park near the Las Vegas Sign?

There's a free parking lot in the median which is the simplest place to park if you want to see the Las Vegas Sign.

However, the Las Vegas Sign is a popular visitor attraction and parking spaces here often fill up. The best time to come is 7am on a weekday - many visitors in Vegas won't be up that early after a late night!

Remember, the parking lot is open 24/7, as is the sign. So if you want to take a photo at night or return when it's quieter, it's no problem. At night, the sign is also illuminated with neon lights, another great photo opportunity.

Things you need to know about driving up to the Las Vegas Sign:

• It's a relatively straightforward drive to see the Las Vegas Sign, however the busy three-lane road might feel intimidating if you're not used to it. Traffic can also be slow moving, so arriving during rush hour is likely to be frustrating.
• There are seldom bad weather conditions to cause problems when you visit the Las Vegas Sign, but be aware of the extreme heat in the summer months.
• Temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit in June, July and August, and seeing as you might be waiting 10 minutes or longer to take a picture, make sure you take precautions to stay safe in the sun.
• Photographers hang around the sign and ask to take your photo. These aren't official photographers and aren't employed by the city. Show caution as they'll want a tip for their services.
• Likewise, as a tourist hotspot, you may find people dressed as characters such as Marylyn Monroe or Elvis offering to pose with you. This is common in Vegas as a whole. Remember that these will want payment, so be careful and ask how much before having your photo taken with them.

If you're feeling active, you can also walk to the Las Vegas Sign from the Strip. This means you won't have to worry about heavy traffic or parking delays, but be prepared for the intense Vegas heat, especially in summer.

You also have the option of taking the Deuce. This local, 24-hour bus service will drop you off right by the sign.

Things to see once you reach the Las Vegas Sign

It's safe to say that, in Las Vegas, you should expect the unexpected! It's not unheard of to encounter a whole wedding photo shoot when you reach the sign.

If you're spending a little longer in the city, you'll have plenty of entertainment options to keep you busy.

• The Las Vegas Strip - The Strip is the epicenter of the action. Along this one street, you'll discover luxurious hotels, vibrant casinos, and world-class entertainment venues.
• Bellagio Fountains - Marvel at the mesmerizing water spectacle that's become one of the iconic Vegas sights. Just in front of the hotel, the choreographed water show dances to music and lights with spurts reaching heights of 460 feet.
• Fremont Street - There's more to Las Vegas than the Strip. Fremont Street is home to a number of popular casinos and hotels so you'll still find some of the city's vibrant nightlife here. You can even zipline above the street.
• High Roller Observation Wheel - The second-tallest observation wheel in the world. Find it at The LINQ where you can take in the Las Vegas skyline and surrounding desert landscape.
• Las Vegas Neon Museum - Once you've checked out the famous Las Vegas sign, why not head to this unique outdoor museum that showcases other iconic vintage neon signs.

With so much to see and do, a trip to Las Vegas can be a rollercoaster ride, but be sure to make some time to see the iconic Las Vegas Sign before you leave town.

If you’re going to do Las Vegas in a day , you need to be meticulous in your planning. This Las Vegas itinerary is a good place to start because it includes the top Vegas attractions that any visitor to Sin City should see.

First, opt for a ticket for the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus , which will let you easily move from one spot to the next. The bus tour travels along the Strip and Downtown, making 9 stops and arriving every 45 minutes. You can get on and off at your leisure at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign , the STRAT , and other landmarks.

One of those stops is the LINQ Promenade , a haven for shopping, dining, and entertainment. The centerpiece attraction is the High Roller , one of the world’s largest observation wheels.

I also recommend spending your day at some of the best hotels in Las Vegas . For example, The Venetian is home to the Grand Canal Shoppes and Madame Tussauds . It’s also worth seeing the Bellagio Fountains and the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas .

Las Vegas in a day itinerary

Begin your day in Las Vegas by visiting the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign . You can catch the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus  there and take it to the LINQ Promenade .

After exploring this entertainment area, hop back on the bus and get a tour of Downtown Las Vegas . If you’re not interested in downtown, you can walk over to The Venetian and check out Madame Tussauds and the gondola rides at the Grand Canal Shoppes .

Later, head back to the LINQ Promenade and ride the High Roller during sunset. At night, walk to the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas , where you’ll have a great view of the Bellagio Fountains . The water show is one of the best free things to do in Vegas , although if you want to see it from the Paris viewing deck, you should reserve a ticket  (It is also included at the Las Vegas All-Inclusive Pass  ).

2-day Las Vegas itinerary, the best Las Vegas weekend itinerary

If you’re wondering what to do in Vegas for the weekend , you have plenty of options. A 2-day Las Vegas itinerary allows you to make the most of your trip and even venture a bit outside the city. Weekends are also the best time to plan a birthday or friends’ trip because you can see the main attractions and enjoy the nightlife.

I recommend taking the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus  during the day to see some landmarks and popular resorts. For example, New York-New York has the Big Apple Coaster and Arcade , which is fun for all ages.

Then, you can take the bus downtown and take in the Fremont Street Experience and other attractions in downtown Las Vegas . Shortly before sunset, head to the LINQ Promenade and ride the High Roller . Then, enjoy the city views at night atop the SkyPod at the STRAT .

With another day in Vegas , you can use the first half for a Hoover Dam tour. Then, rest up before hitting a Vegas pool party or doing a bar crawl .

Las Vegas 2-day itinerary

Seeing the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign is a rite of passage, so start there. This is also where you can catch the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus , which will transport you around the Strip.

If you like thrill rides, stop at New York-New York ‘s Big Apple Coaster before continuing downtown. Then you can do the Las Vegas Downtown – Fremont St. walking tour , one of the best things to do in downtown Las Vegas .

Later on, head to the LINQ Promenade , where you can eat, shop, and ride the High Roller . You can also get awesome views from the 1,149-foot-tall SkyPod at the STRAT . The SkyPod has a late-night bar and lounge, so it’s the perfect place to wrap up a Las Vegas couples itinerary .

A Las Vegas weekend itinerary is ideal because you can experience some daytime activities in Las Vegas before diving into the nightlife.

First, take a break from the Strip with a half-day Hoover Dam tour . When you return to Vegas, take a quick break, then do go to a pool party in Las Vegas. If that’s not your thing, you can take in the scene at Fremont Street , perhaps with a ride on the SlotZilla zip line or a visit to the Mob Museum , one of the best Las Vegas museums .

In the evening, grab cocktails at a swanky lounge or do a bar crawl .

3-day Las Vegas itinerary, a Las Vegas bachelor party itinerary idea

Throwing a bachelor party in Las Vegas is quite the experience and your chance to go all out on activities. A 3-day Las Vegas itinerary gives you enough time to go wild in the city and explore the natural surroundings, too.

You can start this Las Vegas bachelor party itinerary with some go-kart racing at Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix . Then, take a midday break at the LINQ Promenade . In the evening, pre-game at Señor Frogs’ open bar , then go clubbing.

For day 2 of this bachelor/bachelorette itinerary in Las Vegas , take a break from the Strip. I recommend exploring one of the most impressive natural wonders near Vegas, the Grand Canyon . Here, you can hike to some magnificent viewpoints and capture incredible photos.

Las Vegas 3-day itinerary

Begin your 3-day Las Vegas itinerary with a thrilling go-kart race at Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix . It’s especially fun with friends, and it’s a good way to escape the crowds for a bit.

Once you return to the Boulevard, visit the LINQ Promenade . Here, you can grab a bite to eat, do some shopping, ride the High Roller , and check out the other attractions.

After dark, gear up for an exhilarating evening at Señor Frogs’ open bar , then enjoy yourself in one of the best nightclubs in Las Vegas .

I suggest dedicating the second day of your Las Vegas itinerary to a day trip, like the Grand Canyon . The great thing about Sin City is that it’s close to so many beautiful natural areas. What could be better than visiting this wondrous canyon?

Also, be sure to check out the LINQ Promenade and consider visiting the nearby Springs Preserve . You can round out day 1 with the Bellagio Fountains show, maybe from the Eiffel Tower at Paris Hotel.

After that whirlwind day, you’ll appreciate getting away from the city with a visit to the Grand Canyon . Then, on day 3, spend the morning in one of the best spas in the City. And after that, for a couple’s itinerary in Las Vegas , the Erotic Heritage Museum is a great idea. Another fun thing to do in Las Vegas as a couple is to go to the STRAT SkyPod for after-dinner drinks.

Finally, spend your last day taking a day tour to Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend, or Zion National Park . You can’t go wrong with either option, as they’re some of the best day trips from Vegas .

Las Vegas 4-day itinerary

For your first day in Sin City, I recommend getting a head-start by visiting the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign . Capture a memorable photo, then catch the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus , which will take you around the Strip.

Then, take a break from the Boulevard and visit one of the top attractions outside Las Vegas , like the  Springs Preserve .

Afterward, return to the Strip or check out downtown Las Vegas with a Fremont Street walking tour . If you want to stay on the Strip, I recommend going to Madame Tussauds at The Venetian and the gondolas at the Grand Canal Shoppes .

Then, stop at the LINQ Promenade and enjoy a sunset ride on the High Roller . At night, walk to the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas to watch the Bellagio Fountains . It’s one of the best things to do in Las Vegas at night , although if you want to see it from the Paris viewing deck, you should reserve a ticket .

For one of the most exciting Las Vegas family vacation itineraries , you must visit the Grand Canyon . This national park is absolutely gorgeous, so it’s a wonderful place to visit as a couple, with friends, or with children. Plus, on the way, you’ll pass the Hoover Dam , another place worth visiting.

Once you get to Grand Canyon Village , also known as the South Rim, you can see some of the most famous lookout points. One of the best is Hopi Point , where you can get panoramic views of the canyon, but if you want to have a completely different view of the canyon, I can’t recommend enough taking a helicopter tour at Grand Canyon.

After your day trip from the day before, rejuvenate with a massage or treatment at one of Las Vegas’ best spas . Then, use your free time exploring the Strip and doing some couples’ activities in Vegas . A few ideas are the Ethel M Chocolates Factory or the Fremont Street Experience .

In the evening, go to the Erotic Heritage Museum and visit the SkyPod at the STRAT . It’s one of the coolest rooftop bars in Las Vegas and the perfect way to end day 3 of this Las Vegas itinerary .

To end your 4-day Las Vegas itinerary , take a day tour to a nearby attraction. There are so many awesome day trips from Las Vegas , so it can be hard to choose. I recommend going to Zion National Park or visiting Antelope Canyon and neighboring Horseshoe Bend .

If you visit Zion National Park , you’re in for a treat because this place is full of beautiful hikes, overlooks, and natural structures. The hike at Angels Landing is a must-do, and you shouldn’t miss the iconic views at Court of the Patriarchs and the Virgin River .

The other day trip I recommend is Antelope Canyon , a gorgeous slot canyon with red, water-carved curves. Bring your camera, because when the light filters through the canyon walls, it’s one of the most ethereal scenes.

Plus, Antelope Canyon is very close to Horseshoe Bend , so you can visit both in one day. This imposing meander on the Colorado River is 984 feet tall, so you can imagine the views from here. It’s certainly worth adding to your Las Vegas trip itinerary !

5-day Las Vegas itinerary, the perfect first-time Vegas itinerary

Five days is ideal for a first-time Vegas itinerary . This way, you can see the best attractions on and off the Strip and have plenty of time to take in all the sights.

Start with a tour on the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus , which will take you down the Boulevard and through downtown. You’ll be able to hit the most popular spots like the LINQ Promenade , the Grand Canal Shoppes , and the Mob Museum . Later in the day, take the Las Vegas Downtown – Fremont St. walking tour and finish with a Bellagio Fountains show.

The next day, spend some time perusing the best museums in Las Vegas , like Madame Tussauds and the Neon Museum . In the evening, check out the FlyLINQ Zipline and the Big Bus Night Tour . You can’t also leave the city without trying your luck in one of the  best casinos in Las Vegas.

I recommend using the last few days of your Las Vegas itinerary to take a multi-day tour. I like this one , which goes to Antelope Canyon , Grand Canyon , Zion , Bryce Canyon , and Monument Valley .

Las Vegas 5-day itinerary

As a newbie to Sin City, you must see the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign . There, you can catch the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus  and ride down the Strip. The bus will take you into the downtown district, where you can visit the Mob Museum , one of the top museums in Las Vegas .

Downtown Vegas is lots of fun and should definitely be on a first-time Vegas itinerary . You can learn more about this area by taking the Las Vegas Downtown – Fremont St. walking tour .

Afterward, hop back on the bus and go to The Venetian to see the Grand Canal Shoppes . Even if you just walk around there, you’ll be amazed by the architectural replicas of Italian landmarks. Since the LINQ Promenade is a short walk away, I recommend heading there and riding the High Roller observation wheel. It’s a great place to watch the sunset or see the Bellagio Fountains water show.

The great thing about a 5-day Las Vegas itinerary is that it gives you more time to explore and take in all the activities. Since you’ll have the time, I suggest visiting Madame Tussauds and the Neon Museum. These two Las Vegas museums offer unique exhibits you’ll only find in Sin City! Plus, they’re popular kid-friendly attractions in Vegas , so they’re perfect for adding to a Las Vegas family itinerary .

During the latter part of the day, check out the FlyLINQ Zipline at LINQ Promenade , and soar over this bustling entertainment hub. You can round out the evening with a Big Bus Night Tour to see the Strip’s most famous landmarks. For example, I recommend stopping by some of the most popular casinos in Las Vegas.

After exploring the best attractions on Las Vegas Strip , it’s time to start your multi-day trip. This 3-day tour begins with a visit to Zion and Bryce Canyon.

Zion National Park is a gorgeous area with narrow canyons, mountains, natural pools, and wildlife. During your tour, you’ll have plenty of photo opportunities to capture the majestic cliffs and iconic sights like Weeping Rock . You can also embark on one of the park’s top hikes, such as the Emerald Pools Trail , which features waterfalls and turquoise lagoons.

Afterward, you’ll go to Bryce Canyon , a national park characterized by hoodoos or natural sandstone spires. These red-orange structures create some magnificent arches and bridges, as well as Bryce Amphitheater . After exploring the beauty of this park, you’ll wrap up day 3 of this Las Vegas itinerary at a Bryce Canyon campsite.

Day 4 of this Vegas itinerary begins with an early morning drive past Lake Powell , a scenic reservoir along the Colorado River. Along the way, your tour guide will take you to Antelope Canyon , one of our favorite day trips from Las Vegas .

Antelope Canyon is a photographer’s paradise, although anyone can appreciate the water-carved slot canyon and its striated walls. You’ll want to have your camera ready to capture the filtered light beams coming through the canyon.

The next part of your journey takes you to Monument Valley , a vast desert landscape. You’ll board a 4×4 Jeep and ride through the Navajo lands while learning about the history of this spectacular place. Finally, you’ll have the memorable experience of camping under the stars.

The last stop on this 5-day Las Vegas itinerary is the beautiful Grand Canyon . You’ll start with a visit to an authentic Navajo Trading Post and have the option to do a helicopter flight over the canyon. I highly recommend adding this to your Las Vegas itinerary . The Grand Canyon is one of the best road trips from Las Vegas , and a Grand Canyon heli-tour is an unforgettable experience.

If you don’t take the flight, you can take a hike along the canyon rim and hear from a knowledgeable guide about the area’s history and geology. Get acquainted with this massive natural wonder and witness the views from its famous lookout points. At the end of the day, your tour group will head back to Vegas.

7 days in Las Vegas itinerary, the best Las Vegas family vacation itinerary

If you have the time and budget for a 7-day Las Vegas itinerary , there is plenty of fun to be had! You’ll be able to maximize your trip and see the best of the Strip, downtown Las Vegas, and the surrounding areas.

To start, check out the most popular Vegas attractions and sights by taking the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus . Be sure to check out iconic landmarks like the LINQ Promenade and Madame Tussauds . In the evening, go to the   Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas  to watch the mesmerizing Bellagio Fountains show.

Begin day 2 at a Las Vegas waterpark , then visit the Las Vegas Natural History Museum . Later, get an adrenaline rush by riding the Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York and soaring along the FlyLINQ Zipline .

For days 3-5, take a multi-day tour like this one that goes to Antelope Canyon , Grand Canyon , Zion , Bryce Canyon , and Monument Valley .

Las Vegas 7-day itinerary

For your first day in Las Vegas , get acquainted with the city by seeing some of the top attractions on the Strip . It’s always nice to start with a visit to the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign . From there, catch the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus  and check out the downtown district.

You can take the Las Vegas Downtown – Fremont St. walking tour   or walk over to The Venetian , one of the best Vegas hotels . The resort is home to Madame Tussaud’s wax museum, a fun place to go in Las Vegas with kids . The hotel also has the Grand Canal Shoppes , which mimic Venice, Italy, and its historical landmarks.

Later, stop at the LINQ Promenade to ride the High Roller , perhaps at sunset. After dusk, go to the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas and watch the famous Bellagio Fountains show. You’ll have to reserve a ticket for the viewing deck in advance.

If you plan on making this a Las Vegas family vacation itinerary , begin your second day at a Las Vegas waterpark . Mandalay Bay Beach at Mandalay Bay and Splash Zone at Circus Circus are right on the Strip. Or you can visit a nearby water park, like Lake Las Vegas or Cowabunga Bay .

Another fun family activity is going to a Las Vegas museum , like the Natural History Museum . After some chill time, you can experience some thrills on the Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York and the FlyLINQ Zipline .

Since you have 7 days for your Las Vegas travel itinerary , you have enough time to take a multi-day trip. My top recommendation is this 3-day tour , which begins with a visit to Zion and Bryce Canyon.

The beautiful mountain peaks, hiking trails, and canyon structures of Zion National Park will take your breath away. You’ll have lots of chances to capture lovely photos during your tour, as well as explore popular hikes like the Emerald Pools Trail .

If you don’t do the flight, you can witness the majestic magnitude of the Grand Canyon on foot. Visiting this natural wonder is one of the best road trips from Las Vegas , so take your time hiking along the canyon’s rim and admiring its viewpoints. You’ll have some free time to take it all in before heading back to Sin City.

Now that you’re back in the city, why not recharge with a visit to one of the best pools in Las Vegas ? Chilling out by the water is one of the best things to do in Vegas during the day when the beating sun is at its most intense.

Some of the most popular pools belong to Las Vegas’ top hotels , so consider booking a room there. For example, the Garden of the Gods Pool at Caesars Palace is an elegant European oasis, while Encore Beach Club at The Wynn is perfect for a Las Vegas bachelorette itinerary .

For the last day of your Las Vegas itinerary , I suggest visiting the Valley of Fire . Some people find it hard to believe that this incredible park is just 45 minutes from Vegas. Here, the landscape is defined by bright red Aztec sandstone that forms natural arches, peaks, and canyons.

Besides the fiery sandstone, the Valley of Fire is home to colorful landscapes like the Rainbow Vista and Pastel Canyon . You’ll also find impressive natural structures like Arch Rock , Elephant Rock , and the Beehives .

Be sure to travel along the park’s Scenic Drive, also known as Mouse’s Tank Road . I also recommend doing a hike or two to see the Fire Wave and the ancient pictographs . I guarantee you won’t regret ending your Las Vegas trip itinerary here!

Competing for attention in Las Vegas with neon signs, billboards and mega-resorts that resemble European palaces and Egyptian pyramids is no easy feat.

But an eight-month-old orb with a talent for shapeshifting is stealing a little of their thunder.

Sphere at The Venetian Resort , an entertainment venue that opened September 2023 just off the Las Vegas Strip , has garnered much attention since its debut for its immersive audio-visual experiences.

See the 366-foot-tall venue from the outside at night and it captivates people for its ability to project images from its exterior shell (also called the Exosphere) containing 580,000 square feet of LED lights, whether it's the Earth, the surface of Mars, a blinking eye, or an emoji. It developed a reputation for causing traffic gridlock since the projections began last year during the Fourth of July.

Inside, the venue's 160,000-square-foot display with 16K by 16K resolution displays immersive visuals, backed by the world's largest beamforming audio system, according to The Venetian .

What is the Sphere in Las Vegas?

Described on its website as "a next-generation entertainment medium that is redefining the future of live entertainment," Sphere is an immersive venue that uses haptics (seats that can move and vibrate), atmospheric simulations and visual effects to "transport audiences to places real and imagined."

The Sphere Experience, the main attraction inside the Sphere, is a two-part attraction. The first part, guided by a humanoid robot called Aura, includes a 360-degree avatar capture and a 50-foot-high holographic installation.

The second part is a viewing of an immersive film called "Postcard From Earth" by director Darren Aronofsky on Sphere's largest, highest-definition screen. "Postcard From Earth" is described as part nature documentary, part science fiction movie.

Sphere has also hosted concerts, with U2 inaugurating it with a 40-show residency that launched on Sept. 29, 2023. Sporting events are coming as well: UFC President Dana White said in February that he booked Sphere for UFC 306, scheduled for Sept. 14, 2024.

Tripadvisor users gave Sphere more mixed reviews, with an overall rating of 3 out of 5 stars. Most of its bad reviews were critical of the message of the "Postcard From Earth" film in the Sphere Experience.

A one-star review from a Tripadvisor user named Kathryn W. expressed disappointment with the Sphere Experience's humanoid robots and how "a couple of robots that are comparable to (Amazon's virtual assistant) Alexa can't answer a question." Kathryn added that the moving seats "could be mistaken for someone kicking the back of your chair."

Raiders signing Michael Gallup, per report: How former Cowboys 1,000-yard WR fits into Las Vegas offense

Gallup will head to vegas on a one-year deal.

Michael Gallup is the latest free agent to land a contract after the draft, as the former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver reportedly reached an agreement with the Las Vegas Raiders . Per ESPN , Gallup will sign a one-year deal worth up to $3 million. 

Gallup was a 1,000-yard receiver with the Cowboys in 2019, which was his best season as he finished with 1,107 yards and 6 touchdowns (16.8 yards per catch). He started 67 of 86 games with the Cowboys, having 266 catches for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns (14.1 yards per catch). 

Over his last three seasons, the 28-year-old Gallup had 108 catches for 1,287 yards and eight touchdowns. He had three years and $45.55 million remaining on his contract when he was released by the Cowboys in March in an effort to save salary cap space. 

What this means for the Raiders 

Gallup joins a wide receiver group that has their starters set in Davante Adams , Jakobi Meyers  and Tre Tucker . The Raiders aren't exactly paying much for Gallup due to the low financial commitment and them having the starters on the depth chart set. 

Gallup will be competing for a roster spot with Kristian Wilkerson , DJ Turner , and Ramel Keyton. The former 1,000-yard receiver should have a green light toward making the roster, barring injury. Gallup was healthy in 2023, but hasn't been the same player a year after an ACL injury late in the 2021 season impacted his 2022 offseason. Since the ACL injury, Gallup has 73 catches for 822 yards and 6 touchdowns in 31 games. 

The Raiders are taking a flyer on Gallup, hoping he's good receiver depth for a room that clearly needs some. There may not be many targets for Gallup thanks to Adams, Meyers, and Tucker at wide receiver, but an opportunity to contribute on an NFL roster.

For those who have been waiting for the high-speed rail to come to Southern California and Las Vegas, ground was broken in April 2024.

• First US high-speed rail from Las Vegas to California will go 186 mph, shortening travel time by over 2 hours.
• Projected 30,000 daily passengers to enjoy amenities like Wi-Fi and food for a price lower than airline tickets.

As things currently stand, the only way to get from Southern California to Las Vegas is to take a short flight or to drive four or more hours on CA I-15. With the price of airfare continuing to rise, more visitors opt to take the freeway to get to and from Las Vegas to save money, despite flying being the quickest way into Las Vegas from Southern California . This equates to 44,000 vehicles crossing the California-Nevada border daily , stats that equate a massive amount of traffic to visit Sin City and surrounding areas.

In order to alleviate some of this congestion, the idea of high-speed rail from Southern California to Las Vegas has been floated around for years. However, it was not until funding was received that any real plans could be made to connect Nevada and California in a way that was an alternative to cars or planes. That funding came in January 2024 and both the Nevada Department of Tourism and the San Bernardino Country Transportation Agency went into action nearly immediately to get the high speed rail up and running.

It was announced in April 2024 that ground was broken on the project. The high-speed rail from Las Vegas to California is underway and travelers could not be more excited.

On April 24, 2024, ceremonial ground was officially broken on the high-speed rail line that will take passengers from Southern California to Las Vegas. The project being undertaken by Brightline, the same company behind Orlando's high-end train transit, will be the first high-speed rail in America and those who travel from Southern California to Las Vegas with frequency could not be happier.

The high-speed rail from Southern California to Las Vegas will go at a speed of 186 miles per hour . A speed that will compete with some of the fastest high-speed trains around the world . With a rail line that stretches 218 miles, this means that a trip into Las Vegas from Rancho Cucamonga, California will take just slightly over two hours. This is not only half the time it takes to drive from Rancho Cucamona to Las Vegas, but it takes out all the traffic that Southern Californians face when leaving Las Vegas on a Sunday or after a long-weekend getaway.

Rancho Cucamonga, located in San Bernardino County, was chosen as the main hub in Southern California due to its Metrolink station. This hub will allow for passengers to jump from the high-speed rail to the Metro and continue on to Los Angeles.

In addition to the Rancho Cucamonga hub, there will also be stations available for passengers in Apple Valley and Hesperia. The high desert will now have easier access to other locations in the Inland Empire, which will help to cut down on traffic for daily commutes as well.

The projected number of daily customers is 30,000. Those passengers will be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi, can check their luggage, and purchase food and beverages while on board. All of this will be available for a price that, while not yet announced, will reportedly be "significantly lower than that of an airline ticket."

The price tag for getting the first high-speed rail in the US is not small. In fact, in order to make the project come to fruition, Nevada and California had to combine their allotted funding from the Department of Transportation that was awarded in January 2024.

The grand total that was awarded to the Nevada Department of Tourism was $3.5 billion. The San Bernardino Country Transportation Agency received another $25 million. A private activity bond authority also allocated a $2.5 billion bond directly to Brightline. While this does not cover the complete cost of the $12 billion project, it covers half of it, allowing construction to get underway.

This progress is a stark contrast to the Northern California project that was approved in 2008 to get Sacramento to San Francisco via high-speed rail that has not broken ground due to costs being triple what they were over 15 years ago. This is perhaps why the project is getting underway so quickly, so as not to face the same fate as the northern part of the state.

The funds will be used for new rail lines, rail stations, and the trains themselves — which will be zero-emission and fully electric. Not only will there not be a carbon footprint, but the hope is to be able to take enough cars off the road to be able to cut 400,000 tons of carbon pollution each year, according to CBS, which would drastically decrease the pollution in both San Bernardino County and the city of Las Vegas as well.

The high-speed rail project is quite a large undertaking. However, there is a huge deadline looming over Brightline's head. That deadline is the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles . As such, the goal is to have the rail line completed and have the trains up and running in the next four years.

In order to complete the rail line on time, "over 35,000 jobs" will need to be filled. This means a great deal of money will be put into the economy as a result of the project and those cities who have the construction happening in them will be the direct beneficiaries with those hired to complete the rail line spending money there.

This also means that over the next four years, there will be a steady stream of construction happening in Las Vegas, Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, and Hesperia. There will also be construction on the median of I-15 , which is where the high-speed rail will run.

There are lots of changes coming to Southern California and Las Vegas, all of which will help to make transportation to and from the locales that much easier in only a few years.

Las Vegas visitors increase in March, even without one of the biggest conventions

L AS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — More than 3.6 million people visited Las Vegas in March, building on the tourism momentum that’s now 4.2% ahead of last year’s pace.

With 3,671,500 visitors, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), there was still plenty of room for improvement as hotels were without a big money-maker — the once-every-three-years CONEXPO‐CON/AGG tradeshow, which brought 142,000 conventioneers last year and won’t return until 2026. That comparison put a dent in convention attendance (down 37.2% compared to March 2023), hotel revenue (revenue per available room down 19.2%) and room prices (average daily rate down 16.4%).

Figures released by Harry Reid International Airport showed a 2% increase (compared to March 2023) in arriving and departing passengers, coming in at a total of 5,043,368. The airport’s biggest carrier, Southwest Airlines, carried more than 1.9 million passengers in March, a 12.9% increase over a year ago. Spirit Airlines, the second-biggest carrier, dropped by 14.7% with 627,142 passengers.

The number of international travelers in March increased by 26.2% compared to March 2023.

The economic reports released near the end of each month show continuing signs of a solid tourism market.

Visitor volume is up 0.4% compared to March 2023, the LVCVA report shows. Hotel occupancy was just over 85% for the month

Overall hotel occupancy reached 85.3% for the month, with the additions of the 3,644-room Fontainebleau Las Vegas and the 209-room Durango Casino & Resort. Those openings added about 3.9% more rooms to the mix.
