15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Louisiana

Written by Lana Law Updated Jan 20, 2023

Author Lana Law has traveled around Louisiana and always enjoys a stop in New Orleans.

Even the name Louisiana evokes a feeling of sultry summer nights with cicadas chirping nearby, and the laughter of friends and family over a table groaning with tasty Southern fare. This a state where time slows down, and life is more about living than doing.

Jackson Square, New Orleans

One of the best places to visit Louisiana's tourist attractions and soak up a bit of Creole culture is in New Orleans . The French Quarter celebrates the state's history and is a great place to get lost knowing that no matter where you turn, a great meal and a good time is waiting. World-famous Mardi Gras brings out the fun in people as they dress up and parade through the streets.

Just down the road is the state capital of Baton Rouge . State capitals can sometimes be stuffy places, but not Baton Rouge. This city casts that reputation aside and proudly celebrates all that it has to offer, including a capitol building with a resident ghost named Sarah.

Outdoor-minded travelers will want to stop in at Lake Charles and soak up the natural beauty and perhaps stop at one of the state's best beaches.

After you've given the cities their due, head out of town. Visit the bayous and swamplands with their ghostly silent waters inhabited by things that may like to eat you. Less adventurous visitors may find a tour through a plantation more to their liking.

Plan your visit with our list of the top attractions in Louisiana.

1. New Orleans' French Quarter

2. national wwii museum, 3. mardi gras, 4. melrose plantation, 5. old state capitol, 6. state capitol building, 7. swamp tours, 8. laura plantation, 9. vermilionville, 10. spend a day at the beach in louisiana, 11. sci-port discovery center, 12. uss kidd and veterans memorial, 13. rosedown plantation and gardens, 14. st. martin de tours catholic church, 15. dequincy railroad museum.

New Orleans' French Quarter

The French Quarter is New Orleans' oldest and most famous neighborhood. Its beautiful buildings date back as far as 300 years, many with wrought iron balconies that extend over the tourist-filled sidewalks below. Visitors flock to the French Quarter for sightseeing, shopping, dining, and entertainment, and the area is packed during the annual Mardis Gras celebrations.

The most popular place to visit in the French Quarter is Bourbon Street , which is alive year-round with throngs of tourists and live music. North Rampart Street is less crowded but has many historic buildings and good restaurants, while Decatur Street is a popular hangout for hipsters. Jazz clubs line the pedestrian-friendly Royal Street , which is also known for its antique shops and art galleries.

Louis Armstrong Park is another popular tourist attraction, home to the historic Congo Square , where the city's African-American community once socialized before gaining freedom. The park covers 31 acres and includes trails, fountains, and a huge statue of jazz legend Louis Armstrong.

National WWII Museum

The National WWII Museum in New Orleans offers an in-depth look at every aspect of the conflict, from the ground war in Europe to the challenges of battle at sea and in the air. One of the most impactful exhibits is "Road to Berlin," where visitors have the opportunity to be immersed in the past while seeing fully recreated battle zones complete with the sights and sounds.

Other exhibits include an exploration of the obstacles overcome by the Seabees and Merchant Marines in supporting the troops, a look at how vital support from the home front was to the effort, and details about the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

The museum's displays employ a variety of media and interactive technology that bring history to life. Exhibits are also full of personal stories and photos, as well as a large collection of artifacts, including soldiers' personal items and even a shark-faced P-40 Warhawk.

The museum added a new attraction in November 2022 titled Expressions of America. Taking place most evenings on the Col. Battle Barksdale Parade Ground, this immersive sound and light show is designed to take you back to the war years of the early 1940s.

The show starts in the BB's Stage Door Canteen, where live performances take place. Eventually the show moves outdoors for the main show. Expressions of America is a separate attraction from the regular admission to the museum and an additional fee is charged.

French Quarter ironwork galleries decorated for Mardi Gras in New Orleans

The biggest event on Louisiana's annual calendar is the Mardi Gras celebration that takes place in New Orleans. This colorful event is a huge undertaking with a parade, balls, and street celebrations like none other. Mardis Gras is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, but celebrations begin on the weekend leading up to Tuesday.

The event draws huge crowds who come to join in the celebrations and watch more than 1,000 floats go by on dozens of parade routes. To see the floats up close, tourists can visit Mardis Gras World , where you can watch artists and craftsmen build them. Nearly half of the celebration's floats, costumes, and props are created in this workshop.

If you're coming for Mardi Gras, plan ahead. Check the events calendar and be sure to book a hotel well in advance.

Melrose Plantation

The Melrose Plantation in Natchitoches was first known as Yucca Plantation when it belonged to Marie Thérèse and Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer, freed slaves. Yucca House, found on the grounds, was built in the 1790s. The Big House is a West Indies Creole plantation house with early Greek Revival details.

At the turn of the century, Melrose became the home of John Hampton Henry and his wife Camie, a patron of the arts. Mrs Henry enlarged the garden and preserved the buildings. Many writers and artists were guests at Melrose over the years.

Old State Capitol

The Gothic-Revival-style Old State Capitol makes a dramatic impression on visitors passing by and is equally impressive on the inside. Two huge towers flank the main entrance, and the roof is crenellated. The building, which resembles an old castle, is set on a hill overlooking the Mississippi River in downtown Baton Rouge.

This historic landmark building now houses a political history museum , which includes artifacts, documents, and interactive exhibits that explore the state's long history.

Visitors can also learn about the building's history and significance in the "Ghost of the Castle" presentation, a 4 -D experience that is hosted by the apparition of Sarah Morgan.

Keep your wallet in your pocket, admission is free.

The most remarkable feature of the plantation, however, is its large exhibit dedicated to the lives and personal stories of those who were enslaved on the farm. The exhibit explores the complex relationships between the owners and the slaves, as well as various aspects of daily life, form health to religion.

Collections include rare photos and documents that shed light on all-but-forgotten African-Americans who lived and worked on this Creole farm, as well as other slaves in the state. Tours run every 40 minutes all day long, beginning at 10am.

Holly Beach, Louisiana

Louisiana has a surprisingly good selection of beaches, and with the state's reputation as a steamy, hot place in the summer, you may be making a beeline for one in short order.

One of the best places to visit the beach in Louisiana is Holly Beach , colloquially referred to as the "Cajun Riviera." Located in the southwest corner of the state, the beach here is long, flat, and wide with golden sands. The Gulf of Mexico waters get delightfully warm in the summer, and the shallow water is ideal for children.

Just a couple of hours south of New Orleans is another popular beach destination, Grand Isle . This barrier island extends into the Gulf of Mexico, and the beach here stretches for almost the entire length. Unfortunately, the Grand Isle State Park received significant damage from Hurricane Ida and has not reopened. However, the damage to the beaches in the town of Grand Isle have been repaired and are fully open.

At the far end of Grand Isle is Port Fourchon. The beach here is a bit different, with larger waves popular with surfers.

Even closer to New Orleans is Lake Ponchartrain and Fontainbleau State Park . This beach has flat, shallow water and a wonderful sandy shoreline. Off the beach is a water playground for the kids, showers, picnic tables, and restrooms. Hurricane Ida caused significant damage to the park, but it has since reopened fully, the only exception being the camping cabins, which remain closed until further notice.

Sci-Port Discovery Center

Sci-Port Discovery Center is a science and entertainment center featuring science, math, and space exhibits; an IMAX Dome Theatre; and the Sawyer SPACE DOME Planetarium. Located in Shreveport, the center is targeted mainly towards youth, and is a popular family attraction with a strong educational component, featuring hundreds of interactive exhibits.

The center's newest addition is the Power of Play Children's Museum, which encourages children to learn through hands-on play.

Address: 820 Clyde Fant Parkway, Shreveport, Louisiana

USS Kidd and Veterans Memorial

Visitors can climb aboard a decommissioned destroyer at the USS Kidd and Veterans Memorial , located in Baton Rouge. The ship was active during WWII and has since been used in films and TV productions.

Information on the ship, as well as nautical items and memorabilia, are on display in the museum. The USS Kidd is named for Rear Admiral Isaac Campbell Kidd, Sr., who was killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

In addition to the ship, the memorial also has an observation tower and a museum . Inside the museum are historical artifacts and a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Children and adults alike will be fascinated by the model ship collection.

For a truly unique experience, gather 20 of your closest friends and camp out overnight on the ship. You'll have the complete run of the place and can set your own schedule.

Address: 305 South River Road, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Rosedown Plantation and Gardens

The Rosedown Plantation is a State Historic Site known for being one of the most well preserved domestic Southern plantations. It offers a look at the lifestyles, both of plantation owners and slaves, during the mid 19th century in the South.

On the grounds are camellias, azaleas, and rare shrubs and trees. The Rosedown Gardens were created by the owners, Daniel and Martha Turnbull, in 1835. These incredible gardens span 28 acres and are one of the finest in the entire state.

The Turnbull family occupied the mansion for more than 120 years.

Address: 12501 Hwy 10, St. Francisville, Louisiana

St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church

St. Martin Catholic Church was established in 1765 in St. Martinville. The present structure was built in 1836 and has an 1883 replica of the Grotto of Lourdes. In the left wing of the church is the grave of Emmeline Labiche, thought to be the heroine of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem Evangeline . A statue of Evangeline stands in the churchyard.

Of note is a beautiful statue of Saint Martin de Tours dating from 1931. The St. Martin Catholic Church is the third oldest church in Louisiana.

Address: 133 South Main Street, St. Martinville, Louisiana

The DeQuincy Railroad is located in the old Kansas City Southern Depot, which was built in 1923. This grand old building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places , now contains a variety of railroad equipment and related memorabilia.

Exhibits also include an impressive collection of museum quality Gauge 1 model steam and diesel engines created by master model craftsmen. Outside, visitors can admire the museum's 1913 steam locomotive and a 1947 Pullman passenger coach, as well as two cabooses.

This is also a great spot for train lovers to simply relax and watch the trains go by from the train-watching platform or any of the several viewing areas.

They are typically open daily from 8:30am to 5pm.

Getting There

By Plane -- Louisiana has three major airports servicing domestic and international flights: Louis Armstrong International in New Orleans (tel. 504/464-0831 ; www.flymsy.com ), Baton Rouge Metropolitan in the state capitol (tel. 225/355-0333 ; www.flybtr.com ), and, to the north, Shreveport Regional Airport (tel. 318/673-5370 ; www.ci.shreveport.la.us/dept/airport ).

By Train -- Amtrak's Crescent Line (tel. 800/872-7245 ; www.amtrak.com ) starts in New York City and ends in New Orleans, making stops in the Midwest and Tennessee along the way.

By Car -- I-49 begins in the north in Shreveport, and runs all the way south to Lafayette, where it ends at the intersection with I-10. I-10 enters the state in the west from Texas, passes through Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, around the south side of Lake Pontchartrain, and into New Orleans in the east. In the north portion of the state, I-20 begins in Texas in the west, passes through Shreveport, and heads east into Monroe and, eventually, exits into Mississippi.

Special Events

Of course, two of Louisiana's most well-known festivals are held in the Big Easy, and both soldiered on despite the massive devastation (and the slow and seemingly plagued rebuilding effort) from Hurricane Katrina. Despite the fact that much of worst-hit areas of NOLA (the Ninth Ward and areas just south of Lake Pontchartrain, where the now-repaired levees broke) remain in rubble, many restaurants are still shuttered, and support staff is at an all-time low, this only seemed to bolster the need to continue the city's most beloved traditions. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival ( www.nojazzfest.com ) long ago grew beyond what its name promises, with big names in contemporary and pop music sharing the same stage as jazz greats, old and new. The post-Katrina spirit inspired new songs dedicated to the people of New Orleans, and even brought favorite son Fats Domino out of retirement to perform in 2006, drawing legions of thrilled music lovers to spend much-needed tourist dollars.

The pre-Lenten festival of Mardi Gras ( www.mardigrasneworleans.com ), typically held in February, was certainly scaled back in 2006, with most of the parade routes sequestered to St. Charles Avenue and curfew restrictions enforced, but it nonetheless went on as scheduled. The weeklong celebration still had colorful parades, nonstop music, and "krewe" balls (named after the groups responsible for each of the spectacular floats you see, as well as keeping the parades going for all these years). In fact, while some of the floats were badly ravaged in post-Katrina flooding, their krewe members decided to incorporate the flood's damage into their work, instead of taking a pass on the parade.

Often overlooked but delightfully whimsical is Halloween in New Orleans, when parades and balls full of intricately costumed revelers will bedazzle you with their outrageous outfits, and the spookiness of the city is exhumed for one wickedly glorious day (or two -- Louisianans are known for their capacity to celebrate).

In October, Shreveport's weeklong Red River Revel arts festival ( www.redriverrevel.com ) is equally fun for kids and adults, with musical acts like Shooter Jennings (the very talented son of Waylon), the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Marc Broussard; mock geological digs, face painting, and juggling workshops for children; and a ton of artisans showing their wares.

8 Best Beaches in Louisiana

From lakefront parks to the Gulf Coast, these are the most beautiful shores in the Pelican State.

louisiana tours mexiko

Louisiana may be best known for its marshlands, but don't let the murky waters fool you — this state is full of stunning beaches, too.

With white sand and warm, clear waters, Louisiana's beaches could rival any of the most luxurious shorelines on earth. Only here, you're likely to find far fewer crowds. Most people don't think of the Pelican State when it comes to beautiful beaches, meaning it's easy to have a dreamy strand all to yourself.

Ready to explore? Here are eight of the best beaches in Louisiana that will make your visit unforgettable.

Best known for its deep-sea fishing and birding habitat, Louisiana's Grand Isle is the state's only inhabited barrier island. It offers stellar views of the Gulf of Mexico and is a perfect getaway for camping, picnicking, and catching some waves. Louisiana's Pontcha Surf Club says Grand Isle is a modern-day surf hub, attracting the crowd that once frequented the swell at Port Fourchon, which is now accessible only by boat.

North Beach

Who says you need to travel to the coast for sandy shores? Resting on the northern edge of Lake Charles, North Beach is the only inland white-sand beach between Texas and Florida. Located directly off the I-10, this easily accessible beach has walking paths, a picnic area, and a yacht club that organizes races, events, and sailing lessons.

Holly Beach

Nicknamed "The Cajun Riviera," Holly Beach is the go-to spot for a locals-only vibe. There are no stores, restaurants, or hotels in the immediate area—which means you'll likely want to bring your own umbrella, food, and beverages—but the lack of infrastructure only adds to its charms. Come here to spend the day crabbing, building sandcastles, and collecting colorful shells. If you don't feel much like moving, just plant yourself among the dunes and nap to the sound of the waves lapping.

Jimmie Davis State Park

Jimmie Davis State Park sits on a peninsula on Caney Lake in northern Louisiana. Its waters are primed for fishing, swimming, and waterskiing, and its sandy shores are ideal for relaxing and birding. What's great about lounging lakeside at Jimmie Davis is that you're treated to forest views the Gulf can't give you. And when you tire of the beach, there are endless other things to get into at the park, from taking the kids to the playground to cycling and disc golf. For those who want to spend the night, the park offers 68 campsites with water and electrical hookups, 17 deluxe cabins, and two lodges that can sleep up to 14 people.

Fontainebleau State Park

Perfect for a family getaway, Lake Pontchartrain at Fontainebleau State Park is the largest lake in Louisiana. This park's soft, sandy beach gives way to shallow waters, making it an ideal spot for younger children to swim and play. If you're looking for more adventure, bring a canoe or kayak and paddle along the lakefront for an impressive view.

White Sands Lake Day Beach

Find another family-friendly beach at White Sands Lake . The recreational area at this spring-fed lake is filled with activities for all ages, including a full-fledged aqua park that includes an inflatable water slide, trampolines, floating mats, an air-filled "blob bag" that catapults adrenaline seekers into the water, and more. On the sand, visitors can also find volleyball nets, BBQ grills, and plenty of space to stretch out.

Rutherford Beach

At Rutherford Beach in Creole, adventurers can go canoeing or kayaking in two spots: along a river as well as in the Gulf of Mexico. There are miles upon miles of shoreline to choose from, where visitors can hunt for the perfect seashell, see how many different maritime birds they can spot, or spend a day lounging. It's also a popular spot for camping, so book a spot and pack a tent for an extra-memorable getaway.

Cypremort Point Beach

P.J. Hahn via Lousiana State Parks

Cypremort Point is a human-made beach — stretching for about half a mile — that is a stellar spot for a day spent in the sand. Visitors can pack in a picnic or enjoy other popular aquatic activities like fishing, crabbing, and even windsurfing when the conditions are right. The beach is also connected to a larger 185-acre park with a boardwalk for those who want to spot wildlife like muskrats, deer, alligators, and native bird species.

Louisiana is home to America’s Creole and Cajun cultures and cuisine; the tangible blend of history between the French, Spanish and African people who made the area their home before and after the United States purchased the land in 1803. The Mississippi River runs from the north to the south, ending in the Gulf of Mexico. While it’s known for its bayous, there are also beaches, parks, and campgrounds. If outdoor activities are not for you, Louisiana also has unique museums, festivals and the Audubon Zoo.

What to See on a Louisiana Road Trip

what to see louisiana road trip

When we think of the Great American Road Trip, we often immediately think of long drives along the dusty roads of old Route 66. While these trips can be wonderful in this place, we also believe there are plenty of other regions of the country to explore. And while anyone can hop on a plane and fly to their ultimate destination, sometimes the classic road trip is the very best way to experience a new region of the country.

Have you ever considered traveling the Deep South by car? Here in Louisiana, in the heart of the South, there’s plenty to see and do. With incredible cities like Baton Rouge and New Orleans as well as all the remarkable parks, towns and sites in between these cities, a car is the only way to truly experience these and more destinations at your leisure.

To help you plan your big road trip across the beautiful state of Louisiana, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite things to do in Louisiana for adults and families. You may not be able to hit them all, but that’s all right. By the time you’re home again, we think you’ll already want to start planning your next trip.

Check out this list of fun and historical places to visit in Louisiana. Which ones will you include on your road trip itinerary?

1. Tabasco Factory Tour

Louisiana’s little Avery Island is the birthplace of Tabasco Sauce. Today, you can visit this island for a tour of the   Tabasco Museum and Factory . While you’re there, don’t forget to stop in for a bite to eat at Tabasco Restaurant 1868!

2. Jungle Gardens

You’ll also find   Jungle Gardens   on Avery Island. This semitropical 170-acre garden is home to diverse wildlife and abundant native plant life. Depending on the season you choose to explore the park, you might spot colorful bamboo, alligators, snowy egrets, gorgeous azaleas and even a centuries-old Buddha statue that’s located deep within the garden.

Also known as The End of the World,   Venice, Louisiana , is located at the very southeastern tip of Louisiana, right where the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico. While it’s exciting enough to see the stunning sight of the world dropping away into the empty ocean at what feels like the edge of the earth, there’s also plenty for fishing enthusiasts to enjoy here. Use one of the many charter boat services to take a trip out into the water for a fishing experience to remember.

4. Chauvin Sculpture Garden

If you’re looking for the beautiful with just a touch of the strange, then you won’t want to miss the   Chauvin Sculpture Garden . Here, a reclusive artist and bricklayer worked single-handedly to transform his bayou-side property in southeast Louisiana into an amazing sculpture garden featuring statues of angels, soldiers, God and even the artist himself. The site has been open to the public since 2002, and you can wander the grounds yourself, taking in the many unusual and wonderful statues.

5. Atchafalaya Basin

If there’s one thing Louisiana is known for, its wetlands and swamplands.   Atchafalaya Basin   is famous for being the largest swamp not only among all the swamps in Louisiana but also in the entire nation — its size surpasses even that of the Florida Everglades. These stunning wetlands are home to 65 species of amphibians and reptiles, at least 250 species of birds and more than 100 species of fish, as well as huge numbers of bald eagles. Visit the Basin today and take part in activities like paddling, biking, camping and boat tours.

6. Melrose Plantation

Louisiana is dotted with many different historic plantations, and you can choose to visit as many or as few as you want on your road trip. Even if plantations aren’t necessarily your cup of tea, however, we think   Melrose Plantation   is worth the visit due to its unique story — it’s one of the biggest plantations built for and by free blacks in the South. Also on the property, you’ll find the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail.

7. Oak Alley Plantation

If you choose only one other Southern plantation to visit on your road trip in addition to Melrose Plantation, let it be   Oak Alley Plantation . This site is famous for the jaw-droppingly gorgeous oak-lined road leading up to the front of the main house, where the oaks arch up over the road to form a canopy. Be sure to grab plenty of photos while you’re here, as this is undeniably one of the South’s most beautiful sights.

8. Louisiana Swamp Tour

There isn’t one definitive spot for taking a swamp tour. The state is crisscrossed with wetlands and swamps, and there are plenty of different sites for taking guided boat tours along the swampy rivers. It doesn’t matter where you choose to launch your tour, but it’s such a quintessential Louisiana experience that you’ll want to be sure to include it somewhere in your tour. And if you’re looking for recommendations for where to start, Lafayette is an excellent choice.

9. Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge

For nature enthusiasts,   Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge   is a must-visit destination. This refuge is located within the boundaries of New Orleans, making it the largest urban refuge of its kind in the country. The entire site covers a staggering 24,000 acres and is home to such native species as alligators, bald eagles, brown pelicans and a stunning variety of natural plant life.

10. St. Louis Cathedral

Originally built in 1718,   St. Louis Cathedral   is the oldest cathedral in the United States. While it’s been added to, refurbished and rebuilt many times over the years, it remains a spectacular sight and a gorgeous landmark that’s easily recognizable in the heart of New Orleans. Today, you can visit this beautiful site of Spanish Colonial architecture and take a self-guided tour or call ahead to reserve a guided tour.

11. New Orleans French Quarter

New Orleans has so many amazing sites and activities that you could easily spend days here, but if your trip only allows time for one quick afternoon in the city, then use that afternoon to visit the   French Quarter . By far the oldest neighborhood in the city, this neighborhood is known for its exuberant party atmosphere and amazing selection of restaurants. Visit Jackson Square, the Audubon Cottages and of course, the incredible bars on Bourbon Street.

french quarter

12. Mardi Gras in New Orleans

This item is less about a specific destination and more about a particular time of year. If you’re planning your road trip during February or March, then you’ll want to be sure to swing through the French Quarter of New Orleans to catch the eye-popping Mardi Gras celebrations. Nowhere in the world does Mardi Gras quite like New Orleans.

13. Café Amelie

Located in New Orleans’ French Quarter,   Café Amelie   may be a relatively new addition to the neighborhood, but it’s also quickly become one of the top spots you won’t want to miss in the city. This café offers a beautiful and romantic courtyard where patrons can choose to dine in addition to their dining room, an extensive menu of creative cocktail creations and a variety of exquisite lunch and dinner items to try.

14. Musical Legends Park

New Orleans isn’t just known for its delicious food and richly diverse cultural history. It’s also widely recognized for all the musical legends it has produced, and at   Musical Legends Park , you can celebrate just a little bit of that history. Check out the life-sized statues of famous New Orleans musicians that decorate this small park and gain a new level of appreciation for the musical innovation this city represents. For any and all music enthusiasts, this park should be a top destination.

15. Garden District of New Orleans

Another New Orleans neighborhood that should be near the top of any traveler’s must-see list is the beautiful   Garden District of New Orleans . Here, you can find stunning 19 th -century mansions, travel by streetcar and stop by the Washington Cable House. If you happen to be passing through around the dinner hour, this is also the perfect opportunity to visit Commander’s Palace, one of the most famous and recognizable restaurants in the city.

16. National World War II Museum

Named by some as the number one destination for World War II history and education in the nation, the   National World War II Museum   is set in New Orleans and is one of the top museum destinations in the country, let alone the state. When you visit the museum, you can see real-life artifacts including bombers and aircraft as well as experience a 4-D film experience and an interactive submarine simulation.

national ww2 museum

17. Audubon Park

New Orleans offers plenty of bright and colorful fun, but it’s also home to one of the most beautiful hidden places in Louisiana —   Audubon Park . A perfect spot to stop for some fresh air and relaxation between major destinations, this park features gorgeous landscaping and is set on an old plantation site. Today, you’ll find picnic facilities, sports fields and a rookery that regularly attracts huge numbers of wading birds.

18. Rip Van Winkle Gardens

Not far outside Lafayette, you’ll find the gorgeous semitropical   Rip Van Winkle Gardens , home to the Joseph Jefferson Mansion. From beautiful nature to historic architecture, there’s something to interest everyone here. Check out the ancient mastodon bones in the museum, explore the salt mine where an accident led to the creation of the biggest man-made sinkhole ever recorded, and don’t forget to track down the tree where notorious pirate Jean Lafitte buried his treasure.

19. Global Wildlife Center

Who said you need to travel all the way across the ocean to see roaming giraffes, zebras and camels? Instead, you can head to the   Global Wildlife Center   in Folsom, Louisiana, the largest wildlife center of its kind in the country, and take the safari you’ve always dreamed of. Get up close and personal with exotic animals by scheduling a private event or by joining a group safari tour.

20. Natchitoches

If you’re interested in history, then it’s worth taking the trip to   Natchitoches, Louisiana , which has the distinction of being the oldest permanent settlement in the state as well as in the entire Louisiana Purchase territory. Some things to do here include checking out the historic Creole Plantations and going paddling out on the beautiful Cane River.

21. Kisatchie National Forest

You might not think of traditional forest hiking as something you can do in Louisiana, but the   Kisatchie National Forest   is the exception to the rule. This pine and hardwood forest encompasses over 600,000 acres and is home to the Wild Azalea Trail, the longest continuous trail in Louisiana. So grab your backpack and plenty of water bottles and get ready to do a little hiking on your great Southern road trip.

22. Grand Isle State Park

If a beach vacation is what you’re looking for at the end of your road trip, then   Grand Isle State Park   is the perfect destination. A major Louisiana tourist region, this park includes pristine beaches that line the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico where you can swim, sunbathe and relax on the sand to your heart’s content.

23. Gardens of the American Rose Society

For the horticulture enthusiasts, your number one destination in Louisiana can only be the   Gardens of the American Rose Society . These 118-acre wooded gardens are filled with roses of every color and type in a glorious celebration of this beautiful flower. Stroll these grounds, and you’ll also find ponds, statues and thick patches of woods that make for the ultimate peaceful and relaxing experience.

24. LSU Rural Life Museum

Interested in the history of Louisiana? Then you’ll want to include a visit to the   LSU Rural Life Museum   on your trip. Located in Baton Rouge and operated by LSU, this museum provides a fascinating window into the lives of ordinary working-class families during the 18 th   and 19 th   centuries. You can browse the reproductions of barns and houses and authentic artifacts via guided or self-guided tours.

25. Mike the Tiger Habitat

At LSU, the tiger isn’t just a generic mascot. His name is Mike, and he’s a real tiger living in his very own habitat on LSU’s campus. Tourists and students alike can   stop by to visit him   and meet the famous face of LSU. And if you can’t manage to fit a visit to the tiger habitat into your busy schedule? You can always check in on him via his live feed as well.

26. Horace Wilkinson Bridge

Have you ever seen a photograph of the Baton Rouge skyline? Chance are, it includes a view of the Horace Wilkinson Bridge. This bridge spans the width of the Mississippi and is the highest cantilever bridge to do so. If you are interested in bridge architecture, famously recognizable landmarks or just love documenting your trip in photos, this is one spot you’ll want to be sure to get a snap of.

27. Louisiana State Capitol

No trip to Louisiana’s capital city would be complete without visiting   the Capitol building.   The tallest capitol building in the nation, this high-rise has 34 floors and stands 450 feet tall. At the 27 th   floor, you’ll find the Observation Deck which offers one of the most spectacular views of Baton Rouge you’ll find anywhere.

28. The Old State Capitol

The Old State Capitol   no longer houses the Louisiana government, but it’s still a gorgeous and historic building that’s now home to a museum of state political history. Stop by this Baton Rouge landmark to enjoy the beautiful gothic architecture and the fascinating snapshot of Louisiana history, all offered for free admission.

29. USS Kidd Veterans Museum

The World War II history buffs will have plenty to see and do in Baton Rouge, particular at the   USS Kidd Veterans Museum . The USS Kidd is a Fletcher-class Destroyer from World War II, and the only one still preserved in its war-era state. Today, you can tour both it and the associated museum to learn a little bit more about the war and the history of ships like this one.

This was definitely our favorite part of our trip to Nola. Our guide, Erik, was really knowledgeable about swamps and gators and made this a truly memorable experience!

It was an amazing experience! The boat ride itself was a thrill, seeing all the different animals in their natural habitat was impressive! The swamp was beautiful and spooky at the same time with the overhanging trees and Spanish beards. We saw alligators, raccoons, birds, swamp cows.

From beginning to end, a delightful day. The Oak Alley tour was very informative. Our swamp tour was truly outstanding. Captain Ernie is personable, knowledgeable, and an all-around terrific captain. I cannot recommend this tour and this company enough!

We had a great time. Our guide was great, answered our many questions, and seemed genuinely interested in giving us the best tour possible. The airboat was pretty comfy and good fun.

Great tour very knowledgeable guide. Friendly and very prompt on pick up time. Guide was very funny and had a lot of personal knowledge about New Orleans.

Had a great time. Seen a bunch of alligators and learned a lot about an area. Ian was a great guide and was very knowledgeable about everything in the area.

We loved the whole thing! The bus driver was so nice, the plantation was lovely. But the highlight of our day was the airboat!! Ian was our guide and he was so knowledgeable about everything in the area!! Showed us so many things in nature from the cypress trees to the gators and all in between!! Highly recommend!!

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed the swamp experience. Our boat tour guide Ernie was full of information and a good sense of humor. I definitely recommend the tour to anyone thinking about it.

Captain Ernie was incredibly knowledgeable and an awesome host for the large airboat tour. We love learning new things and did!

We were picked up at Jackson Square and had a friendly air conditioned ride to the lovely Oak Alley Plantation and then a Airboat Swamp tour. The four of us enjoyed the staff and all the beautiful views and loved our Airboat Swamp tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and Airboat tour was lots of fun. Highly recommend!
