Ska and pop legends Madness return to the US for the first time in eight years with the announcement of stateside tour dates for 2020.

UK ska and pop legends Madness have announced a slate of new tour dates to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band and their 1979 debut album One Step Beyond… .

Along with a number of shows in Europe, the UK, and Dubai , the band also announced stops in Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, the Fox Theater in Oakland, Boston’s House of Blues and a headlining appearance at Punk Rock Bowling & Music Festival in Las Vegas on 25 May, making it the two-tone outfit’s first visit stateside in eight years.

Tickets are scheduled to go on sale this Friday, 13 December at 10 am.

The group are touring with the majority of their core line-up including frontman Graham “Suggs” McPherson, keyboard/pianist Mike Barson, bassist Mark Bedford, drummer Dan “Woody” Woodgate, saxophonist Lee Thompson and guitarist Chris Foreman.

As part of the late-70s 2-Tone ska revival, Madness stormed the UK charts with their debut album in 1979 and continued to reign with nearly 20 Top 10 singles over the course of three decades with enduring hits like such as ‘Our House’ and ‘Baggy Trousers’.

Prior to their US tour announcement, Madness have a number of UK dates this month including three sold-out nights at the Roundhouse in London from 15-17 December. Following their US dates, the band will return to the UK in the summer, with stops in Gloucestershire on 13 June, the York Festival on 18 June and House of Fun Weekender in Minehead on 20 November 2020.

The ska veterans also released a new single, ‘Bullingdon Boys (Don’t get bullied by the bully boys)’ this past November and their last studio effort was Can’t Touch Us Now in 2016.

Brilliant show as always from Madness although they sang a few obscure tunes which we didn't really know from their back catalogue (although they were celebrating 40 years so I guess that was understandable). The Roundhouse is our favourite venue, it's well run, great sound, good views from wherever you stand or sit, plenty of bars & toilets.

Madness where fantastic. Great being in a smaller venue. Only downside was no air conditioning and it was extremely hot inside . No support act to speak of just a guy playing tunes at his decks which was ok for a bit but crowd got a bit restless . Madness brilliant

Brilliant atmosphere,fabulous sound,& an unbelievably great show yet again,only disappointment was (some of,not all) the security guards at the venue,their level of professionalism left a lot to be desired,but The Fratellis and Madness were (and still are) just as good as they’ve always been! #TheSoundOfMadness

Madness – in concert at Amsterdam Paradiso and recorded during their European tour on February 2, 1980, presumably for NPRO in Holland but cleaned up and turbo charged by Flip Martian for his highly groovy Live And Loud website .

Madness formed in 1976 and became one of the most prominent bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s two-tone ska revival, they continue to perform with six of the seven members of their original line-up. Madness’s most successful period was from 1980 to 1986, when the band’s songs spent a total of 214 weeks on the UK Singles Chart. (UB40 shared the same number of weeks, the largest for any British group in the decade, but over a longer period.)

Madness have had 15 singles reach the UK top ten, which include “One Step Beyond”, “Baggy Trousers” and “It Must Be Love”, one UK number one single “House of Fun” and two number ones in Ireland, “House of Fun” and “Wings of a Dove”. “Our House” was their biggest US hit. In 2000 the band received the Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors for Outstanding Song Collection.

Their debut album, One Step Beyond… was released by Stiff Records and coincides with the promo tour this concert comes from. The album included a re-recording of “The Prince” and its B-side “Madness”, and the band’s second and third singles: “One Step Beyond” and “My Girl”. The title song was a cover of the B-side of the 1960s Prince Buster hit “Al Capone”. One Step Beyond… stayed in the British charts for 78 weeks, peaking at number 2.

After the release of “My Girl”, the band felt that they had exhausted the material from One Step Beyond…, and did not want to release any more singles from the album. However, Dave Robinson, head of Stiff Records, disagreed. Eventually, a compromise was made, and the band decided to release an EP featuring one album track and three new tracks. The result was the Work Rest and Play EP, which was headlined by the song “Night Boat to Cairo”, from the One Step Beyond album. The EP reached number 6 in the UK Singles Chart.

In 1980, the band’s second album, Absolutely reached number 2 in the UK Albums Chart. Absolutely spawned some of the band’s biggest hits, most notably “Baggy Trousers”, which peaked at number 3 in the UK Singles Chart. “Embarrassment” reached number 4 in the charts, and the instrumental song “The Return of the Los Palmas 7” climbed to number 7. Although the album reviews were generally less enthusiastic than those of One Step Beyond…, they were mostly positive. Robert Christgau gave the album a favourable B- grade, but Rolling Stone awarded the album just one out of five stars. Rolling Stone was particularly scathing of the ska revival in general, stating that “The Specials wasn’t very good” and Madness were simply “the Blues Brothers with English accents”.

A drama-documentary film entitled Take It or Leave It was released in 1981, featuring the band members playing themselves in a re-creation of their early days to the then-current period. Live recordings of Madness performances as well as those by other 2 Tone bands were used in the 1981 documentary film and soundtrack album Dance Craze.

Once upon a time Amsterdam was known as a place full of ghosts, witches and demons. After all, during its more than 800 years of history the city has had its fair share of death and disease, pain and suffering and murder and mayhem. So join our ghost walker as he leads you through the real dark history of Amsterdam.

Madness Announce First US Tour in 12 Years

The ska legends will embark on a six-date run beginning in May

Madness have announced a run of US tour dates for 2024 in support of their recent album Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie . It marks the legendary ska band’s first trek across the states in over a decade.

The “C’est La Vie in America” Tour”   begins on May 22nd in Seattle, before making stops in cities including Oakland, Boston, and New York throughout the month, as well as an appearance at Las Vegas’ Punk Rock Bowling Festival . These dates supplement the band’s previously-announced UK/EU leg, which will carry them out through the rest of the summer.
