About this show

Micky Flanagan's Detour De France

Comedian Micky Flanagan and great mate and bricklayer Noel Lynch embark from South East London for their dream Tour De France. The first episode sees the friends arrive in Northern France where they attempt the ‘hell of the north’ a route feared by even pro-cyclists, detouring into safer territory (except for a few unexploded bombs) – Belgium - and a surrealist art gallery.

Micky & mate Noel continue their dream Tour De France. As all good cyclists know the first stop on any bike ride should be for a drink so the friends detour into champagne country. This episode sees the friends gradually fattening themselves up for a mighty Mont Ventoux climb, (Noel on his bike, Micky in the car) from there it’s onto Bourg En Bresse to try (the reputedly) world’s most expensive chicken and then after all that gluttony, where better to make a stop than one of France’s top nudist campsites.

Heading 'sarf', Micky and Noel stop off at a psychiatric hospital that once treated van Gogh, before making a splash in Cannes.

They drank, they cycled, they drank some more. Now it's time for Micky and Noel to head back home - not before a couple of last-minute trips, though.

Micky Flanagan's Detour de France is a BBC sports documentary series that aired in 2014. The six-part series provides an unconventional take on the world-renowned cycling event, the Tour de France. While capturing the thrill and excitement of the race, the show also dives deep into the French culture, history, geography, and cuisine.

British comedian, Micky Flanagan infuses his inimitable brand of East End humor into this quirky and enjoyable travelogue, ensuring the series is not a typical run-of-the-mill sports documentary. His comedic background plays a significant role in making the series as entertaining and humorous as it is insightful about the fascinating French culture and traditions. The series offers an amusing, vibrant, and above all, an atypical portrayal of France, the French people, and their quintessential way of life.

Micky narrates his journey across France, sparked by his fascination with the Tour de France. Instead of merely traversing the racing route, Micky and his best friend and former professional cyclist, Noel Lynch, delve into France's distinct regions, each with unique cultural facets and traditions. They explore the picturesque countryside, breathtaking coastlines, magnificent historical sites, bustling cities, and rural villages so often made alluring by the subtle simplicity of everyday life.

Each episode of Micky Flanagan's Detour de France presents a different facet of French life. The series sees Micky and Noel exploring curiosities, sampling local delicacies, attempting the French language, and immersing in local traditions and festivals. They meet a tapestry of interesting characters along the way, ranging from the friendly locals to enthusiasts of the iconic bicycle race, further enriching and humanizing the experience.

The series' charm lies in its balance of light-hearted comedy and genuine interest in the French experience. The backdrop of the Tour de France offers viewers a thrilling element of sporting appreciation, while Micky's comedic perspective brings a light and jovial atmosphere to the series.

Micky is an enthusiastic and curious host who injects his infectious humor into every interaction. His lack of familiarity with the French language and customs often results in comical misunderstandings and mispronunciations. These whimsical moments, intertwined with Micky's sincere charm and curiosity, make Detour de France an enjoyable ride.

Significantly, Micky Flanagan's Detour de France isn't merely about cycling or devoted exclusively to humor. It's about unveiling the real France, beneath the clichéd impression. It offers an intimate, eye-opening, and very funny snapshot of a nation that has shaped so much of the world's culture, food, and philosophy.

Gradually, we see Micky navigating the French way of life – its complex societal norms, food etiquette, controversial topics, attire, and savoir-vivre. From devouring a piping hot croissant at a local bakery, cycling through sunlit vineyards, visiting bustling street markets, to interacting with exuberant crowds at French festivals – it's a journey that opens him to new experiences, and in turn, opens viewers to the true essence of French life.

Through this series, we learn as they learn – about France’s regional differences, its rich history, its idiosyncratic rituals, and its passion for good food, wine, and leisure – stitched together with Micky’s comical commentary and hilarious mishaps.

As Micky dips a tentative toe into the water of France's rich and varied culture, viewers are given a front-row seat to watch their nation as seen through the eyes of this bemused Englishman. Despite being famed for his stand-up comedy, Micky's engaging tour guide persona shines through. His ability to win over viewers through humor, charm, and candidness is what makes Detour de France not just watchable but truly memorable.

In summary, Micky Flanagan's Detour de France is the perfect blend of travel, sport, comedy, and culture. This series is as much about cycling as it is about culture and comedy, with Micky's distinct personality providing the star contribution. It offers both an entertaining and enlightening experience, and whether you're a fan of travel, culture, comedy or sports, Micky Flanagan's Detour de France is bound to have something that interests you.

Micky Flanagan: 'I'd by lying if I said Detour De France was a test of my stamina!'

micky flanagan tour of france

TV Times talks to comedian Micky Flanagan about what happened when he took on his very own Tour de France with friend Noel Lynch on Micky Flanagan's Detour De France (Sky 1 HD, Monday).

How long have you been a cyclist, Micky?

"I got my first bike when I was seven or eight. I rode it down a bin chute in a tower block and I came off and smashed my face in. I didn’t go to school for a couple of weeks because of the way I looked. I’d probably have been called Frankenstein for the rest of my schooldays."

What bikes did you own after that?

"I made my own bike when I was 10 – sorry, I don’t mean to go all Monty Python ‘Oh we used to dream of living in a corridor’ on you. I bought the frame one week, then the wheels, put all the bits together and painted it. It had those buffalo handlebars – you know, with the bits of ribbon. I’d already bought quite a good bike before this ride, like most middle-aged men, but Sky got us both professionally fitted with a couple of really nice bikes."

Was the trip quite gruelling in terms of training and mileage?

"Noel was fit already, as he’s a member of the Dulwich Cycle Club and goes out cycling every weekend, but I wasn’t really going out on my new bike much before the ride. Part of the honesty of this show is that we didn’t do the amount of cycling that’s maybe been done in other cycling travelogues. I would be lying if I said it was a test of my stamina. We were careful to make sure we didn’t do anything that jeopardised our health."

Where would you choose for your next cycling trip?

"I’d choose the flattest place in Europe – maybe the Netherlands, although it’s windy. But as long as the wind is behind us… 'Where are we going today?’ 'Wherever the wind is blowing!'"

Has Britain got the cycling bug now?

"Cyclists were seen as a bit odd in the 1960s and 1970s. People immediately assumed you couldn’t afford a car. But there’s been a revolution in cycling and it’s no longer just the eccentric bloke in your neighbourhood with his bicycle clips and big sturdy shoes.

"For a lot of men and women cycling is something that totally gets you away from everything. You’re free for a few hours and you can do it with people or on your own. When I go out riding with Noel, down towards Biggin Hill in Kent from where we live in East Dulwich in south London, it sets me up for the weekend."

How do you get on with the French?

"Like most people whose experience of France has been a couple of weekends in Paris, I had a built-in suspicion of the French. It’s almost par for the course – we don’t trust the French completely, and we don’t understand them completely either. Do they dislike us as much as we think they do? Are all these myths true, such as the French don’t wash?

"When we got off at Calais the first person I walked past really smelt of BO. I thought this is either a portent or just a coincidence. So I have to smell them all before I judge. I don’t think they were any more pungent than any other race. In any case, we like garlic now."

Did you avail yourselves of fine French cuisine and wine en route?

"We did very well in terms of food and drink on our trip, and made a point of finding the best restaurants, wineries and so on, as it’s what they do well in France. I was hugely impressed, even in a basic restaurant, by their ability to give you a decent meal and a nice bottle of wine. If we can learn one thing from the French. it’s that cheap doesn’t have to equal bad, whereas you’re taking your chances in London if you go below a certain price bracket.

"When Noel rode up Mt Ventoux in episode two, I went to the cafe at the bottom and they did a blinding omelette. I nearly couldn’t eat all the chips and I was so full I couldn’t even get in the car and had to lie on the side of the road."

Did you feel self-conscious wearing all that Lycra?

"Once you put on all the proper cycling kit, you look in the mirror and think: ‘Now I have to go cycling; even though I look like an egg on legs, I need to get on this bike. There’s nowhere to hide – people will look at you and say: ‘My God, what have you don’t to yourself?’ It’s all part of the encouragement."

The comedian hops across the Channel and jumps on a bicycle to sample the sights and sounds of France, joined by his best friend Noel Lynch, a brickie and cycling enthusiast. The pair start off in Calais with some essential pampering, fully aware that no cyclist worth his or her salt would hit the road without a facial or a leg wax. Then it's bon voyage as they tackle a small portion of the 150-mile race between Paris and Roubaix lovingly known as the Hell of the North. The cobbles may look pretty - but they aren't bike-friendly.

Micky Flanagan to tour France on a bicycle for Sky series

Thursday 8th May 2014, 9:27am

Sky1 has announced the new show Micky Flanagan Hits The Road .

The four-part documentary series with see stand-up comedian Micky Flanagan cycling around France.

The show, which is described as 'an amusing, honest and energetic' documentary series sees the comedian "undertake the ultimate test of man's endurance as he cycles his very own fantasy Tour de France. A tour that craftily incorporates Champagne vineyards, Belgian beers, epic landscapes, wild boar, Burgundy wines, the Eiffel Tower and... nudist camps."

Flanagan will be joined on the journey by one of his good friends. Sky explains: "Riding alongside him is the man who convinced him to get on his bicycle, Noel Lynch . A brickie by profession, a cyclist in his heart and Micky's long standing mate of some 15 years."

The channel adds: "As they hit the road Micky and Noel examine those all ( un )important question such as are those narrow seats really any good for your fruit and nuts; and is lycra nothing more than a dangerous fetish gateway fashion?"

Micky Flanagan says: "Life is a journey. I like journeys. Even French ones. This will be a journey of physical and mental obstacles and I will overcome them all... once I've bought the bike."

Sky's Adam MacDonald comments: "I'm so excited to have Micky & Noel on board for Micky Flanagan Hits The Road ; it's a joyful, passionate and funny production which makes it perfect for Sky 1. I can't wait for our customers to enjoy the ride alongside Micky & Noel."

We couldn't think of a better way to start than co-producing with Britain's most popular comedian. That along with the fact that I am a middle-aged cyclist - it's the perfect busman's holiday."

The four hour-long episodes of Micky Flanagan Hits The Road , which is currently a working title, will be broadcast on Sky1 later this year.

In an un-related BBC One programme, John Bishop is set to travel around Australia. John Bishop's Australia will see the comedian retracing the route of a mammoth bike journey he first made as a 25-year-old back in 1992. Using his original diary from the road trip as a guidebook, he will cycle routes from Sydney up the East Coast of Australia towards far Northern Queensland.

‘Great authority, lightly worn’ … Micky Flanagan.

Going out-out again: Micky Flanagan’s irresistibly unreconstructed comedy comeback

After several years away, the cheeky cockney comic is doubling down on his good-old-days brand – but despite his geezerish nostalgia he’s no anti-woke crusader

M icky Flanagan was worried, he says, that audiences might have moved on. Fair enough: it has been half a decade since he last graced the nation’s stages, when the man who defined the difference between going “out” and “ out out ” was arguably the UK’s most popular comedian . But time waits for no standup, least of all when the intervening period has seen him hit 60, and seen the context change in which old-school, cheeky chappy comedy might be delivered.

And yet, his worries are without substance, if the opening night of his Hammersmith run was any gauge. These were the last warm-up gigs before Flanagan’s tour proper starts next week, and they found the east Londoner in evergreen form, and rapturously received by a crowd that still adores him. Watching it, one could believe the market may even be growing for Flanagan’s brand of comedy, which looks at poncy modernity with the sceptical eye of one who grew up poor and without sentimentality in the middle of the previous century. These are confusing times, and there’s something reassuring about the solid certainties from a simpler age that Flanagan brings – or at least there is when delivered with Flanagan’s fundamental unseriousness and sense of fun.

The new show, If Ever We Needed It, seems even older-school than I’d expect from the comic, whose best material is smarter and more slippery than the geezer stylings suggest. But this is back-to-basics Mick, with lots of material on ’er indoors, the sitcom On the Buses , no less, and the idiocy of much modern living. The “smart meter” is contrasted with Flanagan’s dad’s no-nonsense method of dodging energy payments in the 1960s. Rimming is expertly mined for every shovelful of its obvious comic value, much as pegging was when last Flanagan took to the stage. Part of the fun of this routine is the contrast our host draws with the days of his youth, when a blowjob seemed like the most exotic of innovations.

If this all sounds blokey, well, that’s part of Flanagan’s appeal. Not for him any modern sheepishness about masculinity: that’s not what they taught you, I imagine, at Billingsgate fish market, where young Micky plied his trade. Flanagan doesn’t pretend to be anything he’s not, whether that’s an enfeebled husband mouthing swearwords behind his wife’s back, or a domestic busybody laminating the bin rota and hunting down the right items to fit the right tins. That authenticity is his ally as a comic – but equally, the refusal to rein himself in can lead to missteps. A routine tonight envying “the Arabian man”, not least for the supposed docility of his womanfolk, is a bit too 1960s for comfort.

Does this – and Flanagan’s other material on the so-called culture wars – mean we should bracket comeback-era Micky alongside Gervais and co, as another middle-aged megastar flaunting his anti-woke credentials ? Not really. Flanagan lacks the ego to set himself up as a crusader for free speech, or anything else. Nor is he in the business of upsetting anyone: his detour into trans competitors in women’s swimming (“I was straight on the Ladbrokes app”) gracefully swerves wider debates about gender. And while some might take umbrage at routines waxing nostalgic about heavy breathers (so much more innocent, argues our host, than the sexual behaviours of our own era), Flanagan’s treatment is irresistibly comical and cynicism-free.

He’s breaking no new ground then, with this return after half a decade away. But Flanagan occupies his existing terrain with great authority, lightly worn. Performed this well, there’ll always be an audience for the unreconstructed comedy of marital grouches and hair-raising sex, “remember the good old days” and dismay at modernity. Far from moving on, audiences will likely flock back to Flanagan by the thousand.

Micky Flanagan is on tour until 2 June.
