Given the disruptions to air travel, i’m wondering if there are any cruise ships that sail from australia to the uk in a direct route.

I wish I had good news for you but sadly, the days of getting a quick(ish) freighter across the seas are well and truly behind us.

Up until the pandemic, there was an option to cruise with Maris Freighter Cruises but the multi-stop voyage took just under 100 days – a fact that makes a little airline disruption and cost seem the far more preferable option. Of course, if you don’t mind spending some 200 days on a return cruise, they plan to be back up and running once the worst of Covid-19 is behind us.

Some cruise lines offer Australia-to-England voyages, but they’re not what you would call inexpensive or direct. Cunard has a 53-night cruise on the Queen Victoria  departing Sydney for Southampton on March 1, 2023, which takes plenty of scenic stops including Manila, Singapore, Colombo, Dubai, Naples and Lisbon. This one’s priced from $13,499 a person.

A slightly shorter one (42 nights) on Cunard’s  Queen Mary 2  departs Sydney on March 12, 2023, and makes its way to Southampton via Melbourne, Adelaide, Kangaroo Island and Busselton before popping in at Port Louis, Le Port, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Walvis Bay and Tenerife. Prices start from $9999.

Outside that, your only other option would be to get a cruise to a preferred destination in Far East Asia and then hop along the rail networks (including the fabled Trans-Siberian Railway) until you get to England. It’s as far from “direct route” as you can get, but, oh, what a journey.

'Fair dinkum' – Aussie slang for 'authentic' or 'genuine' – Australian cuisine has been influenced by England, New Zealand and even Italy. However, there's nothing more Australian than throwing some steak and snags (sausages) on a barbie (barbecue) – no prawns allowed.

POPULAR PUB GRUB

There are two dishes to order at an Aussie pub: a chicken parmigiana (called a parmi Down Under) or a burger, which will usually come topped with Australian specialities like beetroot or pineapple. Of course, you can always go for a classic steaks: Porterhouses are popular in Victoria, while rump steaks are particularly beloved in New South Wales.

THE REAL BISCUIT

Australia has some delicious sweet treats, but it's perhaps best-known for perfecting the biscuit. Try Anzac biscuits with oats and golden syrup, lamingtons – a sponge square covered in chocolate and coconut – and Tim Tams, the local favourite brand of chocolate-covered biscuits.

It's a long way to Oz.  There are two options to get there from the UK without flying:

Option 1, Europe to Australia via the Trans-Siberian Railway .  You can travel by train from London to Moscow, then by Trans-Siberian Railway to China & the Far East, then catch a passenger-carrying freighter (if you can find one!) or cruise ship to Australia.  This is a real adventure, and a popular choice with lots to see on the way.  Not currently feasible because of the war in Ukraine & Russia being off limits .

Option 2, Europe to Australia by sea .  You can go all the way from the UK to Australia or New Zealand by sea, either a leisurely direct voyage by infrequent round-the-world cruise, or by one of the few remaining passenger-carrying freighters, sometimes with the need to switch ships in either the USA or SE Asia.  Expect Europe to Australia by sea to take at least 32-40 days and cost at least £4,000+ one-way by freighter including cabin & meals, much more if you use a cruise.

This page outlines the journey and how to go about putting such a trip together, with links to other pages for more detailed information about each part of the journey.  Please remember this is not a tour or a package, just some guidance in putting your own independent trip together using scheduled train services across Europe and Asia.

Europe to Australia by sea

By freighter or cruise ship.

If you'd been going to Australia in the first half of the 20th century, you could have caught the fortnightly P&O liner from Southampton to Sydney, taking several weeks.  These days there are no regular passenger ships from the UK or Europe to Australia, and your choice is limited to one of these, if currently operating:

There are occasional round-the-world cruises from Europe to Australia, stopping at various places on the way.  Some sail westward around the world via the Panama Canal, others sail eastwards via either the Suez Canal or South Africa and the Cape of Good Hope.  This is the most comfortable but expensive option.

There are freighters which take a limited number of passengers although they are now getting very thin on the ground.  There are a mere handful of direct Europe-Australia freighters which carry a few passengers, or there are freighters from Europe to SE Asia where you can change onto another freighter or a cruise ship from SE Asia to Australia.

You can take the Queen Mary 2 from Europe to New York (or use a passenger-carrying freighter), take a train from coast to coast across the United States , then take a passenger-carrying freighter to Australia from the Pacific seaboard of the USA.

Europe to Australia by Trans-Siberian Railway

Overland to the far east by train.

It's possible to travel most of the way from London to Australia by train via the Trans-Siberian Railway.  In fact, quite a number people travel this way.  Time-wise, we're talking 4-5 weeks one-way, minimum.  But it's a journey of a lifetime.

Update 2024:  There is a war in Ukraine, travel to Russia is inadvisable, there are currently no international trains to Moscow and no Moscow-Beijing trains.

Route, timetable & costs

Travel tickets alone costs only £750 or so from London as far as Singapore, but you must add food, hotels, and tours along the way.  The links below cover travel in either direction, from London to Australia or Australia to London, follow the links to see details of prices and timetables for each section.

Step 1:  London to Moscow by train .  Daily departures taking 2 nights.  Spend at least 1 night in Moscow.

Step 2:  Moscow to Beijing by Trans-Siberian Railway   Two direct trains every week each taking 6 nights.  Spend at least 1 night in Beijing.

Step 3:  Beijing to Hanoi by train A train runs twice a week taking 2 nights, or you can travel any day with a change of train at Nanning.  Spend at least 1 night in Hanoi.

Step 4:  Hanoi to Saigon by train   Several trains daily, 2 nights.  Why not stop off to see Hue or Hoi An?  Spend at least 1 night in Saigon.

Step 5:  Saigon-Phnom Penh by bus Daily, 1 day.  Spend at least 1 night in PP.

Step 6:  Phnom Penh-Bangkok by bus to the border at Poiphet, then local train from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok .

Step 7:  Bangkok to Singapore by train .  Daily, 2 nights.

Step 8:  The final sea voyage from Asia to Australia is the problem:

You can get from Singapore as far as Bali in Indonesia by scheduled ferry, train, ferry & bus using the ferries from Singapore to Jakarta , see the Indonesia page .  But there are no regular passenger ships to Australia from Singapore or Indonesia or anywhere in the Far East .  And don't bother trying to island hop down to Dili in East Timor, it may look the closest land to Darwin, but there are absolutely no ferries of any kind from there to Australia.

You therefore need an infrequent passenger-carrying freighter for the last leg from Southeast Asia to Australia.  There are one or two Asia-Australia freighters that will carry passengers.  They have very very few passenger places and get booked up, so book early.  Freighter travel is not cheap, with limited places in high demand.  Also bear in mind that schedules can change according to freight requirements, a ship can easily leave a day or two earlier than originally scheduled, so build in plenty of leeway!

Option 1 , shipping company CMA CGM have freight ships which carry a limited number of passengers between Port Klang in Malaysia & Fremantle near Perth in Australia every 46 days or so.  The voyage takes 7-10 days and costs around €1,300 for one person in a private cabin with meals included.  CMA CGM also have ships between Singapore & Brisbane roughly once a month taking 14 days.  Contact them directly via their website, www.voyagesencargo.com .  Various agencies can also book this freighter route for you, presumably with an added fee or mark-up, such as thecruisepeople.wordpress.com & www.traveltips.com .

Option 2 , try German agency www.slowtravel-experience.com who can offer infrequent sailings between Singapore & Fremantle near Perth on the ship MOL Guardian .

Option 3 , try Swiss company www.globoship.ch .  They have twice-monthly freighter sailings from Singapore to Fremantle (Perth) taking 7 days.  Their website is in German, so use Google language tools to translate it.  They also have a monthly Singapore-Melbourne freighter taking 15 days.

How to plan & arrange this trip

There aren't any travel agencies who can arrange the whole trip from Europe to Australia, so you will need to plan and arrange each stage of the journey yourself.  It's an exercise in project management, and I use a simple spreadsheet technique like this to plan an itinerary and budget.  Unless time is absolutely no object, you should book the key sections in advance through various travel agencies, for example, book London-Moscow as shown on the London to Russia page , then book Moscow-Beijing & Beijing-Hanoi through a local Russian agency such as www.realrussia.co.uk or Svezhy Veter.  You also need to pre-book the freighter from Asia to Australia, as places are limited.  Tickets for other parts of the trip, for example, Hanoi-Saigon-Phnom Penh-Bangkok can all be bought locally, as you go along.  The place to start is the sea section from Asia to Australia, as that will determine the dates for the rest of the trip.

You'll need to pre-arrange visas for Belarus, Russia, possibly Mongolia, China & Vietnam.  Cambodian visas can be obtained at the frontier.  In many ways, complying with the various visa requirements (and in some cases, requirements for confirmed onward tickets to be held) is actually the biggest hassle, not buying the tickets for the trains, so check this out carefully using the relevant embassy websites.

After two long years, Australia's ban on foreign cruise ships entering its waters finally expired in April, meaning that this fantastically diverse country is now firmly back on the cruising map. For those who already had Australia on their bucket list, the prolonged closure of the country's borders has only added to a sense that this is a trip to be prioritised over all others.

Of course, it's a long old way from the UK, so you will want to make the most of your visit. A small ship cruise is a great way to see Australia, with pretty much all of the main attractions situated on or near the coast, although the vastness of this continent-sized country means you'll need to think carefully about which region you want to explore.

The east coast is the most popular area to focus on, with highlights including the wonderful cities of Sydney and Melbourne, the spectacular Great Barrier Reef and the wineries of the Hunter Valley. Itineraries also often include the fascinating island of Tasmania or exotic Indonesia, and may combine the east coast of Australia with neighbouring New Zealand.

Cruises exploring the more sparsely populated west of the country are rarer, with easy-going Perth a highlight. Expedition ships focus mainly on the north coast, and in particular the rugged Kimberley region, with its otherworldly geology, rich marine life and aboriginal rock art. If you have a month or more to spare, look out for the occasional itineraries that make a full circumnavigation of the country, the ultimate Australian adventure!

There are plenty of options to choose from, depending on the style and length of cruise you're looking for, and which parts of the country you want to see. It's also worth carefully considering embarkation and disembarkation ports, as you may wish to spend a few extra days in one of the big east coast cities, or add on a trip to the Red Centre and magnificent Uluru. To help you with your search, here is our pick of the best small ship cruise lines visiting Australia:

1. Silversea

Silversea have an extensive Australia programme, with the 596-guest Silver Muse and the 388-guest Silver Whisper both wintering Down Under. Sailings that catch the eye include Muse's 27-night voyage from Melbourne to Cairns departing 16 January 2023 (a back-to-back voyage combining Melbourne to Auckland with Auckland to Cairns), which includes Tasmania, a week in New Zealand and the highlights of the east coast. For a more intrepid adventure, summer 2023 sees the 144-guest expedition ship Silver Explorer sail her final season in the Kimberley before leaving the Silversea fleet.

2. Oceania Cruises

Oceania's Regatta is a lovely size at 684 guests, and offers some fantastic Australia itineraries, including much sought-after full circumnavigations. The December 2022 circumnavigation is already sold out, so act now if you want to secure your place on the 2023 edition, a 35-night sailing round-trip from Sydney on 21 December 2023 , with highlights including an overnight call in Perth, the little penguins of Phillip Island and three calls in Tasmania.

3. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent's generous all-inclusive offering make them a great choice for an Australia cruise, with even your shore excursions included, and voyages sell out fast. There is still good availability on the luxurious 732-guest Seven Seas Explorer sailing from Bali to Sydney on 5 December 2023 , visiting the Indonesian islands of Lombok and Komodo before crossing the Timor Sea to Darwin then on to the east coast. The 482-guest Seven Seas Navigator makes a similar journey in reverse in March 2024 , sailing from Auckland to Bali.

Australian company Scenic's second 'discovery yacht', the 228-guest Scenic Eclipse II, launches next year, and in 2024 she will visit Scenic's home waters for the first time with a series of expedition-style voyages. Scenic's programme focuses on the Kimberley region, but do take a look at the unusual 28 April 2024 voyage between Cairns and Darwin, which combines the vibrant marine ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef with the intriguing indigenous culture of the Torres Strait Islands and the wild beauty of the Cobourg Peninsula.

French cruise line Ponant operates a number of more unusual Australian itineraries on its fleet of stylish yachts. Beach lovers should check out the 7 December 2022 voyage from Cairns to Sydney, a 9-night island-hopping escape on board the 184-guest Le Lapérouse that has been designed specifically for travellers in search of unspoilt desert islands and turquoise lagoons. Another eye-catching option is the 23 December 2022 circumnavigation of Tasmania, sailing round-trip from Hobart and timed to coincide with the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Availability for this cruise is already very limited, but there are still a few suites available at the time of writing.

Azamara offer some interesting Australia options, with a number of 'Australia Intensive' voyages sailing along the south coast calling at Adelaide, Kangaroo Island and Busselton, gateway to the Margaret River wine region. The 13-night Sydney to Perth voyage departing on 6 February 2023 offers particularly good value for money, with a Club Balcony Stateroom on the 686-guest Azamara Quest from just £3,009 person cruise only.

7. Seabourn

Seabourn's fleet of contemporary small ships offer plenty of choice in Australia, including some nice options focused on the south coast and longer sailings combining Australia with South East Asia, New Zealand or the islands of the South Pacific. For something truly extraordinary, take a look at the 52-night voyage from Lyttleton to Cairns in January 2024 on Seabourn's new expedition ship, the 264-guest Seabourn Venture. This incredible adventure takes you down to Antarctica's remote Ross Sea, ticks off some of the highlights of New Zealand, then visits Tasmania before sailing up the east coast of Australia, including five full days exploring the Great Barrier Reef.

8. Windstar Cruises

Windstar's Star Breeze is one of three Star Class yachts to have recently been 'stretched', adding new restaurants, staterooms and public space, though the ship is still petite at 312 guests. This winter she will be based in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, and we particularly like the look of her 25 January 2023 cruise from Melbourne to Bali. This 23-night voyage includes Sydney, the Great Barrier Reef and the protected marine reserve of Triton Bay in West Papua, home to species ranging from pygmy seahorses to mighty whale sharks.

9. True North Adventure Cruises

With just one tiny 36-guest vessel, the eponymous True North, this specialist Australian company focuses on in-depth itineraries in Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, providing guests with an unmatched opportunity to get off the beaten track and discover an amazing and remote part of the world.
