How Many Films Did Tom Cruise And Nicole Kidman Star In Together?

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise smiling

When we talk about the '90s power couples, there are a few that have stuck in our minds through the decades. Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman , Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow, Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford, and of course, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. These iconic couples had people invested in their relationships from the moment they were spotted arm-in-arm on a red carpet all the way to the second news of their breakups broke.

Kidman and Cruise, in particular, caused a great stir when their marriage ended. Everybody remembers the striking image of Kidman as she strolled the streets in apparent glee as the divorce was finalized. Later, the "Big Little Lies" star opened up about the relationship saying, "Our life together was perfect. It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system," she added, "That was a great relationship. I think it ran its course. I was really damaged and not sure whether [love and marriage] was ever going to happen again to me," via InTouch Weekly .

But as we all know, it all worked out in the end. Kidman found love in singer Keith Urban while Cruise went on to marry Katie Holmes and have a child with her before splitting up after six years of matrimony. And while Cruise and Kidman's marriage didn't last, it's safe to say their contributions to cinema will stand the test of time, especially in the movies they did together.

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise starred in three movies together

Unsurprisingly, the two Hollywood stars' paths first crossed on the set of the film, "Days of Thunder." In a 2017 interview with People , Nicole Kidman fondly reminisced about the first time she saw Tom Cruise during an audition for her role in the film, "I remember being so nervous and seeing Tom Cruise drive up in a Porsche [. . .] and he got out of the car and walked through, and I was like 'Ah!' and my jaw dropped." She also added that she was intimidated auditioning in front of the movie's executives and Cruise and believed she wouldn't get the part. But she was called and offered the role on the very same day.

Although Kidman had previously gained notoriety from working in the Australian thriller, "Dead Calm," and several other Australian films, she broke through the American film scene with "Days of Thunder." At the time of filming, Kidman was 22, while Cruise was 28 and in the process of getting a divorce from his first wife, Mimi Rogers. In a 1995 interview with Playboy , Rogers would share that the marriage primarily ended due to Cruise's desire to become a monk, which didn't happen. Months before the film's release in 1990, the divorce was finalized and Kidman and Cruise went public shortly after. The actors wed in a private ceremony on Christmas Eve that same year.

Eyes Wide Shut was one of their most notable projects

In 1992, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise appeared in their first film as a married couple, "Far and Away." And while the film did relatively well, their big break as an iconic Hollywood couple would happen in 1999 with Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut." The official trailer for the film featured several explicit scenes, including some steamy kisses shared between the real-life couple.

Unsurprisingly, the couple's chemistry sizzled in the erotic mystery. In 1995, the couple admitted to Vanity Fair that their initial attraction was sexual. Kidman gushed, "I thought he was the sexiest man I'd ever seen in my life." And Cruise also said something similar, "Instant lust, that's what I felt," he added, "I thought she was amazingly sexy and stunning. It grew into love and respect."

Due to the themes of infidelity in the movie and their striking performances, many believed that Kidman and Cruise were tapping into real-life emotions. But Kidman denied these rumors in a 2020 interview with The New York Times , "We were happily married through that," she added, "We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We'd rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning." Sadly, the couple's divorce was finalized in 2001 after 11 years of marriage. Although the pair has been vague about what went down behind the scenes, many have speculated that this might be why they really got divorced .

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman: The Way They Were

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman The Way They Were

A true ’90s power couple. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman ‘s romance didn’t last, but their relationship remains a subject of fascination for movie fans around the world.

The Oscar winner and the Mission: Impossible actor met in early 1990 while filming Tony Scott ‘s Days of Thunder , in which Cruise played race car driver Cole Trickle and Kidman appeared as his love interest, Dr. Claire Lewicki. Some critics thought the film was too similar to 1986’s Top Gun , which also starred Cruise under the direction of Scott, but the romance developing between its two young stars quickly eclipsed any negative press.

Less than one year after finalizing his divorce from Mimi Rogers , Cruise married Kidman in December 1990 during a private ceremony held on Christmas Eve. The low-key event was attended by their family members and held in Telluride, Colorado.

“I was so young when I got married,” Kidman told Red magazine in 2016, reflecting on her marriage to Cruise. The Moulin Rouge! actress was 23 at the time, while the Top Gun: Maverick producer was 28. “I look back now and I’m like, ‘What?'”

Shortly after their wedding, the couple worked together again on Ron Howard ‘s drama Far and Away , which hit theaters in 1992. That same year, the duo adopted daughter Isabella shortly after her birth. In 1995, they adopted son Connor, who later starred in the films Seven Pounds and Red Dawn .

Cruise and Kidman collaborated for a third time on Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut , which premiered in 1999. “We were happily married through that,” the Hours actress told The New York Times in 2020, reflecting on where she stood with Cruise while making the controversial movie. “We would go go-kart racing after [intense] scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at three in the morning.”

Less than two years after the movie’s release, however, the couple announced their separation. “Citing the difficulties inherent in divergent careers which constantly keep them apart, they concluded that an amicable separation seemed best for both of them at this time,” a rep for the duo said in a February 2001 statement.

The Jerry Maguire actor later moved on with Penélope Cruz before marrying Katie Holmes in 2006. Cruise and the Dawson’s Creek alum, who share daughter Suri (born in 2006), split in 2012.

Kidman, for her part, was briefly engaged to Lenny Kravitz in 2003. In June 2006, she wed country star Keith Urban , with whom she shares daughters Sunday Rose (born in 2008) and Faith (born in 2010).

Despite the end of her relationship with Cruise, Kidman has said she’s not bothered by the perpetual interest in their romance.

“I was young. I think I offered it up?” the Big Little Lies alum told Harper’s Bazaar in September 2021 when asked whether the continued fascination bothers her. “Maybe I’ve gotten a bit more trepidatious, but I’m always trying to be as open as possible. I just prefer to live in the world that way.”

Cruise filed for divorce from Kidman, citing irreconcilable differences for the split. Former Scientologist Mike Rinder claimed in 2022 that the church played a role in the couple's breakup by creating a "distance" between them. The apostate also alleged that the Church of Scientology wiretapped Kidman's phone to monitor her influence on Cruise, who is one of the religion's most prominent members.

The church denied Rinder's claims in a September 2022 statement, saying: "The Church never ordered or participated in any illegal wiretapping. Mike Rinder is an inveterate liar who seeks to profit from his dishonesty. He supports himself by orchestrating the harassment of his former Church and its leader through false police reports, incendiary propaganda and fraudulent media stories.”

Kidman clarified that she did not have a miscarriage early in her marriage to Cruise, but rather had one early in their relationship. "It was wrongly reported," she told Marie Claire , explaining that she'd had an ectopic pregnancy when she was 23. "So it's huge news, and it didn't happen. I had a miscarriage at the end of my marriage, but I had an ectopic pregnancy at the beginning of my marriage. It was incredibly traumatic for me. Sometimes you share your grief."

The Aquaman actress opened up about her miscarriage she experienced during her relationship with Cruise in an interview with Tatler . “I know the yearning. That yearning. It’s a huge, aching yearning," she told the outlet. "And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough. That’s massive grief to certain women."

The 1990s had a lot of great things: the beginning of Friends , unbelievably stylish ensembles, and the birth of iconic “It” couple Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. They were everywhere, and everyone wanted to know every detail about the shocking couple. Cruise was already one of Hollywood’s elites when they tied the knot in 1990, but everyone wanted to know, who was this gorgeous Australian actress who stole his heart ?

They met on the set of the hit film Days of Thunder and tied the knot a year later on Christmas Eve in 1990. Before Kidman became the superstar she is today , she told Marie Claire per Goalcast that she felt like a trophy at the beginning of their marriage. “I thought, I don’t deserve to be here. We would go to the Oscars, and I would think, I’m here to support [Tom]. I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and to be seen and not heard.”

Then came kids, more films, and a lot of red carpet-appearances. They would frequently say how much they loved one another in interviews, with Cruise calling Kidman his “soulmate.”

They were the faces of ’90s love, and their sudden divorce in 2001 shocked everyone, along with Kidman being the reported reason Cruise skipped the 2023 Oscars over 20 years later.

So let’s throw it back to the 1990s and take a look at Kidman and Cruise’s life in photos.

After the sudden divorce, Nicole Kidman threw herself into her acting. She got an Oscar nomination for her iconic role in Moulin Rouge and ended up winning an Oscar for her leading role in the 2003 film The Hours. She re-married to country music star Keith Urban in 2006. They share two daughters born in 2008 and 2010.

Despite Cruise’s film  Top Gun: Maverick  receiving multiple nominations, he reportedly skipped the whole ceremony because he didn’t want to have a run-in with Kidman.

Kubrick’s obsession with secrecy so infected his cast and crew that no one has ever spoken about it in detail. The day-to-day life on set can only be inferred from facts and hints. The most major fact: Eyes Wide Shut was exhausting. Kubrick had asked Cruise and Kidman to commit to six months. When they landed in London in the fall of 1996, the couple fully expected to return to Hollywood by spring. Instead, they stayed on through the summer, fall, and another Christmas. Filming wrapped in January of 1998, but in May they were summoned back for more months of reshoots. Altogether they’d spend 15 months on Eyes Wide Shut, the Guinness World Record for the longest continual film shoot.

“Stanley had figured out a way to work in England for a fraction of what we pay here,” explained Sydney Pollack, who joined the cast as the corrosive tycoon Victor Ziegler after the extended shooting forced original actor Harvey Keitel to cry uncle and drop out. “While the rest of us poor bastards are able to get 16 weeks of filming for $70 million with a $20 million star, Stanley could get 45 weeks of shooting for $65 million.” Though every six months Cruise spent in London cost him another $20 million film he wasn’t making—plus he had the fledgling Cruise/Wagner production company to oversee—he swore to the press he had no qualms about his extended art house sabbatical.

“I remember talking to Stanley and I said, ‘Look, I don’t care how long it takes, but I have to know: are we going to finish in six months?’” said Cruise. “People were waiting and writers were waiting. I’d say, ‘Stanley, I don’t care—tell me it’s going to be two years.’”

Kubrick is legendary for his perfectionism—to reconstruct Greenwich Village in London, he sent a designer to New York to measure the exact width of the streets and the distance between newspaper vending machines. But his approach to character and performance was the opposite. Instead of knowing what he wanted on the set, he waited for the actors to seize upon it themselves. His process: repeated takes designed to break down the idea of performance altogether. The theory was that once his actors bottomed-out in exhaustion and forgot about the cameras, they could rebuild and discover something that neither he nor they expected. During The Shining, he’d put Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall through 50 takes to figure out what he wanted, causing Duvall to have a nervous breakdown. For Eyes Wide Shut, given his stars’ extreme pliancy and eagerness to please, Kubrick went further, once insisting that Cruise do 95 takes of walking through a door.

“In times when we couldn’t get it, it was just like, ‘Fuck!’” admitted Cruise. “I’d bring it upon myself because I demand a lot of myself.” But what he never asked—at least, not openly in the press—was if there was an “it” Kubrick wanted him to get. After all, a director who demands 95 takes could be exacting—or conversely, he could be ill-prepared and uncommunicative. Cruise’s overpreparation had served him well in the past. Not here. He got an ulcer, and tried to keep the news from Kubrick. At its core, the Cruise/Kubrick combination seems cruel: an over-achieving actor desperate to please a never-satisfied auteur. The power balance was firmly shifted to Kubrick, yet to his credit, Cruise has never complained.

Kubrick defenders—Cruise included—insist the legend was fully in command. “He was not indulgent,” Cruise insisted to the press. “You know you are not going to leave that shot until it’s right.” Yet it’s hard not to see indulgence when even small roles demanded prolonged commitment, like starlet Vinessa Shaw’s one-scene cameo as a prostitute, which was meant to take two weeks and ended up wasting two months. Adding to the peril, Kubrick also refused to screen dailies, a practice Cruise relied on. “Making a movie is like stabbing in the dark,” the actor explained. “If I get a sense of the overall picture, then I’m better for the film.” Cruise couldn’t watch and adjust his performance to find his character’s through line—a problem exacerbated by the amount of footage the director filmed. For most of the cast, who appeared only in one or two moments, they had only to match the timbre of their character’s big moment. But Cruise alone is in nearly every scene and had to spend the shoot playing a guessing game. Not knowing which of his mind-melting number of takes would wind up in the film, he still had to figure out how to shape a consistent character from scene to scene. Given Kubrick’s withholding direction and the exponential number of combinations that could be created from his raw footage, it’s understandable if the forever-prepared actor found himself adrift.

Adding to the actor’s peril was the part’s personal and emotional risk. Kubrick decided to find his story through psychoanalyzing his stars, prodding Cruise and Kidman to confess their fears about marriage and commitment to their director in conversations that the three vowed to keep secret. “Tom would hear things that he didn’t want to hear,” admitted Kidman. “It wasn’t like therapy, because you didn’t have anyone to say, ‘And how do you feel about that?’ It was honest, and brutally honest at times.” The line between reality and fiction was deliberately blurred. The couple slept in their characters’ bedroom, chose the colors of the curtains, strewed their clothes on the floor, and even left pocket change on the bedside table just as Cruise did at home.

“As an actor, you set up: there’s reality, and there’s pretend,” explained Kidman. “And those lines get crossed, and it happens when you’re working with a director that allows that to happen. It’s a very exciting thing to happen; it’s a very dangerous thing to happen.” Added Cruise, “I wanted this to work, but you’re playing with dynamite when you act. Emotions kick up.” At least the two actors had an auditory cue to distinguish fact from fiction: on camera, Kidman changed her Australian accent to American. But there was also external tension pressing down on their performances as both actors—especially Cruise—were media savvy enough to recognize that audiences would project Bill and Alice’s unhappiness on their own marriage, which was already a source of tabloid fodder. Even during the course of filming, the couple had to successfully sue Star magazine for writing that they hired sex therapists to coach them.

Kubrick’s on-set wall of secrecy even divided Cruise and Kidman. To exaggerate the distrust between their fictional husband and wife, Kubrick would direct each actor separately and forbid them to share notes. In one painful example, for just one minute of final footage where Alice makes love to a handsome naval officer—an imaginary affair that haunts Bill over the course of the film—Kubrick demanded that Kidman shoot six days of naked sex scenes with a male model. Not only did he ask the pair to pose in over 50 erotic positions, he banned Cruise from the set and forbade Kidman to assuage her husband’s tension by telling him what happened during the shoot.

Co-star Vinessa Shaw would eventually admit Kubrick had exhausted the once-indefatigable actor, confessing that compared to Cruise’s “gung ho” first months of shooting, by the end, “He was still into it, but not as energetic.” Still, when gossip columnist Liz Smith wrote that the Eyes Wide Shut set was miserable, Cruise quickly fired back a letter insisting that his and Kidman’s relationship with Kubrick was “impeccable and extraordinary. […] Both Nic and I love him.” Added actor and director Todd Field, on set for six months to play the pivotal role of the piano player Nick Nightingale, “You’ve never seen two actors more completely subservient and prostrate themselves at the feet of a director.” However, Cruise’s devotion to Kubrick’s massive mystery masterpiece would prove damaging to his screen image.

Good vs. Right

It’s hard to love Cruise’s character, Dr. Bill Harford. He’s closed off and slippery, a cipher whose choices don’t make consistent sense. What personal history screenwriter Frederic Raphael had included in the original drafts—Harford’s strained relationship with his father, his guilt over his prurient interest in female anatomy—Kubrick had purged from the script, leaving Cruise to play a shallow voyager who only serves to lead the audience on an odyssey of sexual temptation. Also on the page but deleted from the final film is Bill’s explanatory voice-over that invited the audience to understand his feelings. Worse, Kubrick deliberately shunned including the Tom Cruise charisma fans expected in his performance, raising the question of why he cast Cruise at all. Why ask the biggest star in the world to carry your film and then hide his face under a mask for 20 minutes?

Though this is a story of sexual frustration—an emotion Cruise had played with conviction in Born on the Fourth of July —and jealousy, which is just the darker twin of Cruise’s signature competitive streak, his performance in Eyes Wide Shut feels flat. He’d done vulnerability better in Jerry Maguire and had captured neutered paralysis a decade and a half before in Risky Business. Yet in nearly all of Eyes Wide Shut ’s key emotional moments—his wife confessing to her first and second psychological “betrayals,” his patient’s daughter professing her love over her father’s corpse, nearly kissing a call girl’s corpse in the morgue, being unmasked at the orgy—Cruise’s face is stiff and visibly unfeeling, almost as if he never took the mask off at all.

Cruise’s blankness makes Eyes Wide Shut take on an element of kabuki theater, the art form where emotional perception—not projection—is key. The whole film feels like an exercise in theatricality, as though Dr. Bill is not a person but a prop. This isn’t a movie about a human possessed with distrust and jealousy—it’s a movie about distrust and jealousy that simply uses a human as its conduit. With Cruise hidden in a mask and robe, the intention is to hide his individuality in the service of a larger ritualistic machine. Even in his scene with the impossibly sweet prostitute played by Vinessa Shaw, their conversation about how much cash for which physical acts doesn’t spark with lust but limps along like the characters themselves are merely performers recognizing that this is the negotiation that is supposed to take place. “Do you suppose we should talk about money?” he asks—it’s as if their whole conversation is in air quotes.

To critique Tom Cruise’s performance in Eyes Wide Shut, it’s important to distinguish between good and right. Measured against any of his previous screen roles, his acting reads as terrible. It’s artificial, distant, and unrelatable. However, the terribleness of his performance translates into a tricky logic puzzle. On-screen, we’re given only one take of the 95 attempts that Cruise shot. If Kubrick was a perfectionist who demanded Cruise repeat himself 95 times on the set, and in the editing room rejected 94 of those takes, then the “terrible” take Kubrick chose must be the take that Kubrick wanted. What feels flat to the audience must have felt correct to the director, so even though it’s hard to appreciate Cruise’s performance, at least one person must have thought the chosen take was perfect: Stanley Kubrick. And for Cruise, a perfectionist himself who was determined to make his master happy, we’re forced to defend the “badness” of his performance by recognizing him as an excellent soldier following orders.

Yet critics under the sway of thinking that the great Kubrick could do no wrong and Cruise, the popcorn hero, could do little right, blamed the actor for the director’s choices and groaned that “Our forever boyish star just can’t deliver.” The irony, however, is that in 45 years of filmmaking, Kubrick had never asked his actors to deliver. His films had earned Oscar nominations for their acting only twice: Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove (1964) and Peter Ustinov in Spartacus (1960). In his much shorter career, Cruise himself had earned as many Oscar nods. That fact alone speaks to the limited value the director placed on acting—to Kubrick, his cast was merely a tool for his vision and individual performances subservient to his intimidating authorial style. Kubrick’s disinterest in actors is evident even in *Eyes Wide Shut’*s credits, which despite including two directors (Pollack and Field) and two great character actors (Alan Cumming and Rade Serbedzija) filled the rest of its cast with new faces and 10th-billed TV actors. As much as Cruise wanted Eyes Wide Shut to prove, yet again, that he could act, Kubrick clearly had scant interest in giving him the opportunity.

Cruise made himself vulnerable before Kubrick and his devotees, but instead of being rewarded for his emotional and financial sacrifice, audiences dismissed his performance as callow. He couldn’t even ask his by-then dead-and-buried director for support. Eyes Wide Shut ’s fallout wasn’t flattering: he was blamed for the film’s failure, and the tabloids took a savage interest in his marriage, which would last only two more years. Yet Cruise continues to defend his two years of hard work. “I didn’t like playing Dr. Bill. I didn’t like him. It was unpleasant,” admitted Cruise a year later in the only public criticism he’s ever given. “But I would have absolutely kicked myself if I hadn’t done this.”

Nicole Kidman: Tom Cruise and I were 'happily married' while making 'Eyes Wide Shut'

Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise, Eyes Wide Shut

Nicole Kidman says her relationship with Tom Cruise was in a good place when they made the erotic thriller "Eyes Wide Shut."

The couple was married when they starred together the 1999 film.

Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise, Eyes Wide Shut

"We were happily married through that," she told The New York Times Magazine when asked about a scene in the film when she gives a long speech about adultery.

"We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning. I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to."

Kidman and Cruise, who met on the set of the 1990 sports drama "Days of Thunder," divorced in 2001 after 11 years of marriage . They adopted two children during their union, daughter Isabella, 27, and son Connor, 25.

In 2006, Kidman married Keith Urban and has two children with him, daughters Sunday, 12, and Faith, 9. In April 2006, Cruise and Katie Holmes welcomed a daughter, Suri. The couple married later that year before divorcing in 2012.

Kidman doesn’t talk too often about her previous marriage , though she has said she was "so young" when they tied the knot. At the time, she was 23, and Cruise was 28. Kidman's also been open about how being married to a star of Cruise’s magnitude meant she avoided being sexually harassed .

Kidman, 53, and Cruise, 58, have both had stellar careers, with Kidman collecting an Academy Award for "The Hours" and Cruise earning a trio of Oscar nominations over the years. For Kidman, working with legendary director Stanley Kubrick on "Eyes Wide Shut" is an experience she still cherishes.

"We were working with the greatest filmmaker and learning about our lives and enjoying our lives on set. We would say, 'When is it going to end?' We went over there thinking it was going to be three months. It turned into a year, a year and a half," she said.

"But you go, 'As long as I surrender to what this is, I’m going to have an incredible time,'" she continued. "Stanley, he wasn’t torturous. He was arduous in that he would shoot a lot."

How Tom Cruise Really Felt When He Joined Nicole Kidman In Eyes Wide Shut

Tom Cruise red background

It's one thing to be married to a fellow actor and shoot a movie together, but imagine working together for over a year on what was not only a legendary director's last film, but also a movie that explored the intricacies of keeping together a mundane marriage while withstanding outside temptation. This is what Tom Cruise and his then-wife Nicole Kidman went through while shooting Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut."

Released in 1999, "Eyes Wide Shut" centers around Dr. William "Bill" Harford (Cruise) and his wife Alice (Kidman), a Manhattan-based married couple who have gotten so used to the routines of domestic life that the only way sexuality plays a role anymore is through the temptations of strangers and mystery. Things start to unravel as William finds himself seeking a new kind of pleasure as he ventures outside the city to a mansion hosting a masked party at which an underground sexual ritual is taking place.

While "Eyes Wide Shut" is notable for its unique storytelling and blatant erotica, its probably best known as Stanley Kubrick's last film, as the director died before the movie was released. It's also known as one of the most "exhausting" shoots for any cast and crew (via  Vanity Fair ). According to Vanity Fair, when "Eyes Wide Shut" began shooting in the fall of 1996, Cruise and Kidman "fully expected to return to Hollywood by spring." However, filming didn't finish until 1998. Cruise and Kidman wound up spending 15 months working on "Eyes Wide Shut," which earned the Guinness World Record for "the longest continual film shoot."

So, how did Cruise feel when Kidman joined the cast of the historic film?

Brutal honesty

Originally aiming to cast Steve Martin in the lead role in 1980, 15 years later,  Stanley Kubrick eventually landed on casting Tom Cruise, at the suggestion of his producer Terry Semel. According to the Independent , Cruise flew to England to meet Kubrick in 1995, and after some basic conversation about "vintage cameras, planes, the New York Yankees," the filmmaker asked Cruise to star in "Eyes Wide Shut." After accepting, Cruise suggested his real life wife at the time play his on-screen wife as well. Kubrick apparently loved the idea, as it "introduced a new layer of psychosexual subtext" to the movie.

The couple went through a grueling shoot with Kubrick, whose unique filmmaking methods began affecting Cruise and Nicole Kidman's marriage. Kubrick decided he would psychoanalyze his married lead actors. Per Vanity Fair , Kubrick pushed Cruise and Kidman into admitting what they feared most about marriage during "conversations that the three vowed to keep secret." According to Kidman, these conversations left her then-husband subjected to "things that he didn't want to hear," and the discussions were "brutally honest at times." She also told Vanity Fair that while it was exciting that the lines of reality and fiction blurred, it was also dangerous. Cruise agreed: "I wanted this to work, but you're playing with dynamite when you act. Emotions kick up."

'Pluses and minuses' to filming a movie with your real-life spouse

In a 1999 press conference , Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were asked if they felt safe playing a married couple on screen, or if they would have felt better working alongside someone else. Cruise responded that he was "glad she played [the role in 'Eyes Wide Shut'] because of her talent." He elaborated, "As an actress, I was really excited, because she's such a great actress and artist and to share that experience together is something very special and I think that we had a lot to offer because we are married." Cruise also admitted that the entire experience "had its pluses and minuses."

While Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise would eventually divorce  in 2001 after 11 years of marriage — and only two years after the release of "Eyes Wide Shut" — they are reportedly open to a reunion as friends or co-workers as of early 2021 (via OK! Magazine ). Plus, in 2017, Kidman told Deadline that she would have continued working with Kubrick for years on end, as she really enjoyed the experience.

"I could have stayed with Stanley [Kubrick] for five years. Never come back," she said. "I look back at that and go, 'Thank God I had this slightly zen approach to things.' Because I was married and I had my kids there. It wasn't like I was rushing to get finished, to get somewhere else. I was there, with Stanley, and I didn't care. Whatever." Kidman added, "He had a great wit and he was a philosopher, but he was never preachy. It was always coming from a place of curiosity and questioning and exploration."

Tom Cruise And Nicole Kidman Face The Brunt Of Scathing Comments From 'Eyes Wide Shut' Screenwriter

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

During their relationship, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman appeared together in three films: "Days of Thunder," which marked the beginning of their romantic involvement, "Far and Away," and Stanley Kubrick's final film, "Eyes Wide Shut." Even after more than twenty years, "Eyes Wide Shut's" intriguing and provocative nature continues to fuel frequent discussions, primarily due to its unique and captivating storytelling and its daring portrayal of sexual content. Now Frederic Raphael, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of the 1999 erotic drama, has taken aim at the pair of Hollywood icons in his latest book "Last Post," unleashing a scathing attack on the actors. Raphael's book revisits his tumultuous experience working with the late Shining director on the enigmatic film, which starred Cruise and his then-wife Nicole Kidman in one of her best performances. In his book which is structured like imaginary letters to people who impacted his career, the screenwriter writes to Kubrick, accusing the "Top Gun: Maverick" actor (along with the late director's wife Christiane Harlan and her brother Jan Harlan) of attempting to erase his contributions to the movie's final version.

Nicole Kidman Explains How She Felt Filming Nude Scenes For Stanley Kubrick For Eyes Wide Shut

Nicole Kidman braless in Eyes Wide Shut

During the course of their marriage, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman filmed three movies together: Days of Thunder , Far and Away and Eyes Wide Shut . The latter is still frequently brought up more than 20 years later due both to it being a weird and fascinating movie and due to it having strong sexual content. Now, Nicole Kidman is speaking out about her feelings regarding filming nude scenes for the movie and why she actually felt “protected” and not exploited going nude.

If you’ve never seen Stanley Kubrick ’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut follows a married couple that explores their own sexual boundaries after infiltrating a secret society and later finds themselves in the middle of a larger mystery. This includes a now-famous orgy scene with a secret voiceover cameo from Cate Blanchett. Now, as part of a recent profile with the NY Times , Nicole Kidman finally spoke out about how she and Stanley Kubrick came to an agreement as they decided on the tone and the necessity of nudity as part of her own scenes in the film.

He would show me the scenes with the nudity before they made it into the film. Then I could feel completely safe. I didn’t say no to any of it. I’d wanted to make sure that it wasn’t going to be me standing there nude and everyone laughing at me. I was protected, so I got to explore a complicated marriage and the way in which Tom’s character is having those jealous images. I would never think of not wanting the storytelling to be told properly. Having them say, ‘Once you’re OK with it, great, that’s it’ - what a fantastic place to be in as a woman.

The actress also said she’s been in movies where she thought the final product would be one thing and it ended up being another , and that this way of doing things ensured she was totally comfortable and not surprised by anything that came along. She said that having a contract allows her to “feel safe” and be able to do sex scenes, which she indicates needs to be a part of a character sometimes. She just never wants to “be exploited.”

Stanley Kubrick died just a few days after showing Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise his final cut, but while the movie was being made, previous reports indicate he and his crew were watching softcore porn in order to figure out where the line should be with the movie's sex scenes. Eyes Wide Shut actually famously filmed more explicit scenes that didn’t make the final cut. These days it would probably be the type of film that required an intimacy coordinator . So, there would be every reason to believe Nicole Kidman might have been uncomfortable; given she wasn’t, it’s great she’s finally set the record straight.

She also talked a little bit about she and Tom Cruise “being happy” during the time , as well. Her marriage with Tom Cruise would fall apart just a couple of short years later, but even now Nicole Kidman says it wasn’t due to Eyes Wide Shut .

We were happily married through that. We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning. I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.

Eyes Wide Shut is a complicated movie with a complicated trajectory. It has a place in history as Stanley Kubrick’s last and its notable for being a wild and intense psychological thriller with weird masks and sexual rituals. Yet, at the time of its release, despite featuring two shiny, then-married a-listers , it had a lukewarm reception. In the time since, it has acquired a more positive reception, however, with both critics and fans.

nicole kidman and tom cruise movies together

The good news is Nicole Kidman seemed to have a good time filming, both with her husband at the time, Tom Cruise, and even Stanley Kubrick, with whom she would watch animal videos for fun and collaborate on scenes for employment. It's a good example of a case where a movie may not have worked out exactly as an actor or actress expected, but Nicole Kidman still seems happy with the work.

"Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I’m always reluctant to talk about, because I’m married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful," Kidman, 51, wrote.

Kidman married the Australian rocker in 2006 and they also have two children, Sunday and Faith.

Nicole Kidman Seems To Shade Tom Cruise As She Reveals Love Advice She’d Give Her Younger Self

  • Nicole Kidman reflects on her past struggles with Tom Cruise and offers advice to be kinder to oneself.
  • She credits her loved ones with saving her from depression and helping her navigate challenges.
  • Kidman opens up about the impact of her darker roles on her mental health, highlighting the importance of family support.

Before she was married to Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman was known for her high-profile marriage to Tom Cruise . The pair went through an infamous divorce after a decade together, which culminated with their two adopted kids choosing to live with Cruise.

While Kidman has been careful about what she says to the media about her ex-husband, she recently shared the candid advice she wishes she could go back in time to tell her younger self.

'Mission Impossible': The Cast Ranked From Richest To Poorest

Nicole kidman wishes she’d been kinder to herself.

“Be kind to yourself,” Kidman said to PEOPLE on Wednesday, May 10. “I’m my toughest critic. My biggest thing would be ‘Go easy on yourself, Nicky.”

She went on to give an update about her current marriage and the two teen daughters she’s raising with her country singer husband. “I have my sister, mother, nieces, nephews, daughters. I’m raising a soon to be 16-year-old and a 13-year-old who are divine,” Nicole, 56, said of her support system.

“They’re just lovely people and I’m so lucky that I have Keith, who’s just my love, my deep, deep love. That gives me the ability to go and do whatever I have to do because I know where I can come back to,” she continued.

The actress credits those around her for helping her stay sane in the ace of pressure, both from her career and living life in the spotlight.

Kidman Says Her Loved Ones Saved Her From Depression

“I’ve had so many mentors. I’ve had so many people that when you reach out and you go, ‘I’m really in need of help right now,’ they have appeared, saved me, helped me, taught me, guided me and been unbelievably generous towards me,” she continued. “I am the recipient of an enormous amount of love. A lot of people have believed in me and given me the courage and opportunity when they didn’t have to. I’m always passing that on.”

Kidman has previously expressed how difficult it was having her marriage to Cruise thrown in the headlines, adding that even the aftermath of their divorce left her in a fragile mental state . She’s credited her husband Urban for helping her bounce back after dark times.

More recently, Kidman has shared how some of her darker roles have affected her mentally, crediting her family for being a constant source of support, including while filming her recent Amazon series Expats about a mother whose child goes missing while they were living abroad.

Referring to the scene where Kidman reacts to the child going missing, she told The Guardian , “ I said, I cannot, cannot do this.’ It was like when a donkey just goes, ‘I’m not going,’”

“I was alone in Hong Kong without my family, which was a terrible mistake,” she further said of the experience. "I couldn’t just get on a plane and get to them. And they couldn’t get to me. That affected the performance, to the degree that it also affected my psyche.”

Despite being married to Tom Cruise for more than 10 years and appearing in three films with him, Nicole Kidman was notably absent from her ex-husband’s career montage at Cannes Film Festival this week.

Before the Cannes premiere of Top Gun: Maverick and a subsequent Master Class with Cruise in attendance, the audience was treated to a 10-minute-long retrospective of the actor’s career.

According to Variety , the montage featured all three films starring Kidman and Cruise together, Days of Thunder (1990) , Far and Away (1992)and Eyes Wide Shut (1999), however, Kidman was not shown in any of the clips. The Independent has contacted representatives for Cruise for comment.

Cruise’s other co-stars, including Dustin Hoffman, Kristen Dunst, Renée Zellweger and Penelope Cruz, were reportedly shown in the footage.

Kidman and Cruise were married between 1990 and 2001 and share two children, son Connor (27) and daughter Isabella (29).

It’s not clear why Kidman was omitted from the montage, but Cruise later referred to her, in the Master Class, using a nickname. When asked about the scene in Eyes Wide Shut where Kidman’s character details an extramarital fantasy, he replied: “We worked together to find the tone: [Kubrick], Nic and I.”

Kidman had a strong reaction last year during an interview with The Guardian when reporter Eva Wiseman asked the star if her role in Being the Ricardos had parallels with her relationship with Cruise. “Oh, my God, no, no. Absolutely not. No. I mean, that’s, honestly, so long ago that that isn’t in this equation. So no.

“And I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either. It feels to me almost sexist, because I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, ‘Give me my life. In its own right.’”

Top Gun: Maverick is out in cinemas 27 May.

Nicole Kidman's 4 Children: Everything She's Said About Parenting

Get to know the actress's four kids: Bella, Connor, Sunday and Faith

nicole kidman and tom cruise movies together

Nicole Kidman is the proud mother of four kids.

The Big Little Lies star shares two children, Bella and Connor, with ex-husband Tom Cruise . She also has two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, with her longtime love Keith Urban , to whom she's been married for nearly two decades.

Kidman became a first-time mother in 1993, when she and her then-husband Cruise adopted their daughter Bella. A few years later, the pair welcomed son Connor into their family. Though Kidman and Cruise split in 2001, she told Elle in 2008 that the former couple's kids were raised "amidst a lot of love."

"They are generous, kind and hardworking," Kidman later said of her two older children. "And these are traits that I love to see in my children ."

After splitting from Cruise, the Being the Ricardos actress went on to marry Urban on June 25, 2006. Two years later, they welcomed their first daughter, Sunday Rose, followed by her younger sister, Faith Margaret, in 2010.

Kidman, who has been open about her fertility struggles, told Marie Claire Australia in 2021 that she always wanted a big family. "I would've loved 10 kids," she said. "I love mothering, I love kids: They're quirky, funny and unfiltered. And then you get to see them grow and send them on their way."

Kidman said that her daughters are part of her support system while talking to PEOPLE for the magazine's 50th anniversary in April 2024.

"I have my sister, mother, nieces, nephews, daughters. I'm raising a soon to be 16-year-old and a 13-year-old who are divine. They're just lovely people and I'm so lucky that I have Keith, who's just my love, my deep, deep love. That gives me the ability to go and do whatever I have to do because I know where I can come back to," she said.

While Kidman has mainly kept her kids out of the spotlight, she has shared a few anecdotes about her family life over the years. Her two younger daughters even made a rare appearance — albeit virtually — alongside their mother at the 2021 Golden Globes .

From everything she's said about being a mother to her sweetest moments with her children, here's what to know about Nicole Kidman 's four kids: Bella, Connor, Sunday and Faith.

Bella Kidman Cruise , 31

Kidman and Cruise adopted daughter Isabella Jane shortly after her birth in Miami on Dec. 22, 1992.

"From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies ," Kidman told Vanity Fair in 2007. "And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic. And that's when we would adopt [our daughter] Bella."

Though she grew up with her father in Beverly Hills, Isabella – who goes by the nickname Bella – has stayed mostly out of the spotlight. She graduated from West London's Delmar Academy of Make-up and Hair, before transitioning to a career in fashion.

The burgeoning designer got her start working for Holmes and Yang, the fashion line of Cruise's ex-wife, Katie Holmes . She started her own line , BKC (a.k.a Bella Kidman Cruise), in 2018, selling t-shirts adorned with her own drawings.

"Bella has been an artist her entire life. Her go-to medium is marker on paper with her inspiration for her artwork drawn largely from friends, fashion, and music," a statement on her line's site reads .

In 2015, she married British I.T. consultant Max Parker , and though neither of her famous parents attended the nuptials, Cruise reportedly helped pay for the event, while a Kidman source told PEOPLE that she was " very happy for Bella ."

While Bella tends to keep a low profile, she does maintain an active Instagram presence , regularly posting photos of her art along with the occasional selfie. In March 2023, she even debuted a new hairstyle on the app, showing off her newly dark brunette shag haircut and bangs.

Connor Cruise , 29

Kidman and Cruise adopted their second child, son Connor, just after his birth in Florida on Jan. 17, 1995. Though her marriage to Cruise ended six years later, the actress has expressed her gratitude for the relationship, as it brought her her two older children.

"I got married really fast and really young," Kidman said in 2012. "But I don't regret that because it got me Bella and Connor and I did have a fantastic marriage for a long period."

Connor grew up in Los Angeles, and got his first real taste of the spotlight in 2008, when he acted alongside Will Smith in the drama Seven Pounds . Though he also had a role in the 2012 action film Red Dawn , he switched to music as a teen, releasing his debut single in 2013 and landing DJ gigs around the country.

Connor is also an avid deep-sea fisherman, a passion he attributes to his travels with his parents growing up. "We used to go fishing a lot when I was a little kid," he told PEOPLE in 2016. "I was blessed to travel the world as a young kid and now I'm traveling the world working."

The 29-year-old now resides in Florida and dedicates much of his time to fishing, as a source told PEOPLE in 2018. " Connor has a pretty simple life in Clearwater ," the insider said. "He lives in his own home in a Scientology community. His life is deep-sea fishing. He has a lot of friends and seems very well-liked."

In addition to his personal Instagram account — where he occasionally posts snaps of his impressive catches — he also runs a separate account dedicated to his barbecuing business, Connor's Meatshack .

Most recently, Connor shared a photo from a golf outing in April 2023. In the snap , he can be seen giving a thumbs up to the camera as he hits the course with a friend. "🏌️‍♂️⛳️," he captioned the image.

Sunday Rose Kidman Urban , 15

Kidman and Urban welcomed daughter Sunday Rose on July 7, 2008, in Nashville. According to PEOPLE, Kidman's father first suggested the name Sunday in honor of the Australian patron of the arts, Sunday Reed. The couple, who claim Sunday as their "favorite day," was clearly on board.

When Sunday was young, the family relocated to Tennessee. In addition to picking up her parents' Australian lingo, Sunday adopted a bit of a Southern accent.

"My daughters are Nashvillians! They have a southern drawl," Kidman told PEOPLE in 2016. "They have some Aussie. They have an unusual mix. They're hybrids."

Her Aussie accent isn't the only way she's following in her mom and dad's footsteps — Sunday has had a passion for music since she was a little girl. "She sings incessantly," Kidman said in 2010 of her then-2-year-old-daughter. "She has a repertoire of about 30 songs: 'The ABC Song,' 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Traffic Light,' 'So Long, Farewell.' "

It seems like Sunday, now 14, wants to follow her mother into the filmmaking industry as well. In a 2018 interview for TIME 100, Kidman shared that Sunday was already thinking of pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.

"I'm raising a little girl that's showing an interest in directing right now, " she said. "I want her to have a path for that."

At the 2017 Palm Springs International Film Festival, Kidman told E! News that Sunday also does some acting: "My daughter just got cast in her school play," she said. "So, that's been the main priority, learning lines with her."

Faith Margaret Kidman Urban , 13

Kidman and Urban surprised fans when they announced that they had welcomed daughter Faith Margaret via gestational surrogate on Dec. 28, 2010, in Nashville.

Like her sister, Faith's name has a sweet meaning. Despite their fertility struggles, Kidman and Urban " never gave up faith they'd have another child together," a friend of the couple told PEOPLE after her birth. As for her middle name, "Margaret" comes from Kidman's grandmother.

Juggling two young daughters with Kidman and Urban's busy careers isn't easy, though the actress told PEOPLE in 2019 that their family always comes first.

"At this stage in our lives, it's what works for the family and what works for our own joy," she said of avoiding jobs that mean too much time away from their daughters.

Kidman and Urban have done their best to keep their daughters' lives private, though both Faith and Sunday have occasionally made public appearances over the years. They were extras in their mom's HBO show Big Little Lies , and voiced baby birds in the film Angry Birds 2 . The girls even became close with the children of Kidman's Big Little Lies costars, as she explained to PEOPLE.

"They've grown up with those kids because I had them on-set around Monterey, and I'm like, 'Playdates, playdates!' " she said.

The pandemic brought on new challenges for Kidman's two younger children. Speaking to Glamour U.K. in November 2020, she explained that Faith and Sunday were " working through the emotions " of social distancing.

"One of the hardest things is just watching them pine and yearn for their friends," she added.

Earlier that year, Kidman spoke to Marie Claire Australia about how her husband was outnumbered and had to retreat from the "female-heavy" house on occasion.

" We're definitely female-heavy ! But as the girls say, 'The dog's a boy!' " she joked, adding that her husband finds solace in one of his shared hobbies with Faith.

"Oh, and he Googles cars — I'll know when he's stressed 'cause he's Googling cars," she said. "I couldn't care less what car I'm driving; you can pick me up in any old thing. But Keith and Faith love cars."

Though Kidman rarely posts her children on social media, she did share a sweet tribute for Faith's 11th birthday in December 2021. "Happy birthday our darling Faith. You are loved beyond measure," she captioned a photo of her daughter's birthday cake.

Suri Cruise was once the most famous baby in America.

The arrival of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter on April 18, 2006, sparked a global frenzy for the first glimpse of the A-list infant.

But it wasn’t until five months after her birth that she made her debut — on the cover of Vanity Fair, wrapped in the arms of her doting parents, in glossy photos taken by photographer to the stars, Annie Leibovitz.

Now she turns 18 this week and faces a choice: Whether to return to the level of fame she had as a kid — when there were blogs devoted to her fashion — or maintain the carefully-guarded life Holmes has built for her since she blindsided Cruise by filing for divorce.

Suri Cruise was a celebrity from infancy.

The dark-haired teen has grown up in Manhattan largely shielded from the spotlight by her loving and highly protective mum, 45, far removed from her 60-year-old father’s Church of Scientology.

As Page Six revealed last year, Suri is estranged from her famous father and the pair have no relationship.

An industry source told us this week that the Mission: Impossible star has not seen Suri since 2012. “Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mum,” the source said.

“This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Tom and baby Suri in the south of France circa 2007.

Holmes told Glamour magazine in 2023 that she likes to “protect” Suri from the public eye “because she was so visible at a young age.”

“I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She’s an incredible person. She’s my heart,” she added.

Being the only daughter of a protective single parent is a stark contrast to how Suri’s life began, of course.

“My whole life I always wanted to be a father,” Cruise gushed to VF back in 2006.

“I always said to myself that my children would be able to depend on me and I would always be there for them and love them — that I’d never make a promise to my kids that I couldn’t keep.

“I’m not one of those people who believe you can spoil a child with too much love. You can never give a child too much love. There’s just no way.”

He already had two adopted children, Bella, now 31, and Connor, now 29, from his marriage to Nicole Kidman and after her Vanity Fair debut was happy to parade Suri for the paparazzi.

Cruise had famously declared their romance by jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch in May 2005, yelling “I’m in love!”

But when Suri was just 6, Holmes filed for divorce after six years of marriage with the help of her dad, Martin Holmes, a fierce lawyer, and through a secret plan that entailed using burner phones.

Cruise was taken completely by surprise by the filing while he was on the set of Oblivion in Iceland in June 2012.

He and Suri were last seen together at Disney World in the summer of 2012.

In November 2013, during a deposition in his $US50 million court battle against a pair of tabloid magazines, the Top Gun star admitted that Holmes had filed for divorce “to protect Suri from Scientology,” court documents revealed.

Despite not having a relationship; as per their divorce agreement, Cruise, who has an estimated $US600 million fortune, agreed to pay Holmes $US400,000 a year until Suri turns 18 as well as future “medical, dental, insurance, education, college and other extra-curricular costs”.

Scientology lies at the heart of the question over Suri’s future.

Holmes, who rose to fame in the TV hit, Dawson’s Creek , is believed to have signed multiple nondisclosure documents that will prevent her from ever talking about her marriage to Cruise — and her time inside Scientology.

But when Suri turns 18, NY state declares that she is at the age of majority, when an individual is legally considered an adult.

That would allow her to speak about her father, his beliefs and their rift.

Tony Ortega, who has covered Scientology in depth for decades, told Page Six, “Suri would have been too young to sign any agreement, but she will now be free to talk if she wants to and it’s going to be really interesting if she has something to say.”

We have reached out to reps for Cruise, Holmes and the Church of Scientology.

“Part of why Katie left when she did when Suri was 6 was that Katie would have seen Isabella and Connor going through Scientology,” said Ortega.

Cruise is of course Scientology’s most famous follower and seen as one of its most powerful figures, possibly second only to its leader, David Miscavige.

That power has led Ortega and former Scientologists to question what action Miscavige and other top Scientologists may have taken against Holmes and her daughter.

Regular members who quit are declared “suppressive persons (SP)” and those who stay in Scientology are told to completely cut them off.

“We don’t know for sure if Katie was ever declared an SP,” Ortega said.

“If you are a regular church member you could be told to disconnect from your wife and daughter, but because Tom is a celebrity — he’s the top celebrity — he gets to ignore all this stuff.

“Your average member would be kicked out, but David Miscavige can’t do that with Tom.”

Both Mike Rinder and Jeff Augustine, two high-profile former Scientologists, agreed with this claim.

Augustine is married to Karen de la Carriere, who was one of the highest-ranking church leaders until she left in 2010 and told Page Six, “The situation with Suri is a larger story about Scientology and the subject of how they make people no longer useful to them or threats to them non-persons.

The family in 2006 … Picture: Getty

“It’s like they cease to exist and that’s what happened to Suri.”

Back in August 2020, Leah Remini — one of the most famous celebrities to leave and speak out against Scientology — told us that she believed Cruise, who now lives mainly in the UK, was waiting until Suri is older so he could indoctrinate her into Scientology.

Remini, who attended Cruise and Holmes’ November 2006 Italian wedding at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle, said, “I’m sure his master plan is to wait until Suri gets older so that he can lure her into Scientology and away from her mother.”

Suri has tiptoed very gently into her parents’ showbusiness world while attending her exclusive Manhattan day school, singing B lue Moon in the opening credits of Holmes’ 2022 movie, Alone Together.

“I always want the highest level of talent,” Holmes said. “So I asked her! She’s very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing.”

Suri also sang in the film Rare Objects , which Holmes also directed.

Cruise proclaimed his love for Katie Holmes in his infamous 2005 Oprah interview.

Holmes will this year return to Broadway in a revival of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town .

She has not remarried but had a six-year romance with actor Jamie Foxx which she kept under the radar before their split in August 2019 and went on to have a brief fling with Nolita restaurateur Emilio Vitolo Jr. in 2021.

Holmes is careful not to speak out too much about her daughter, who is now preparing for college, once saying, “She came out very strong — she’s always been a strong personality.”

But she is now getting ready for her daughter to leave the nest.

“You want them to stay with you forever, but they’re these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need — and then they’re going to go,” she told Town & Country in 2017.

As for the future, former Scientology spokesperson Mike Rinder, who has not seen his own two eldest children since he quit the organisation, told Page Six, “Suri is not a Scientologist and never will be … she deserves love and sympathy.”

A true '90s power couple. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman 's romance didn't last, but their relationship remains a subject of fascination for movie fans around the world. The Oscar winner and the Mission: Impossible actor met in early 1990 while filming Tony Scott 's Days of Thunder , in which Cruise played race car driver Cole Trickle and Kidman appeared as his love interest, Dr. Claire Lewicki. Some critics thought the film was too similar to 1986's Top Gun , which also starred Cruise under the direction of Scott, but the romance developing between its two young stars quickly eclipsed any negative press. Less than one year after finalizing his divorce from Mimi Rogers , Cruise married Kidman in December 1990 during a private ceremony held on Christmas Eve. The low-key event was attended by their family members and held in Telluride, Colorado. [sendtonews type="float" key="YvwaNmNo9L-2836467-14453"] "I was so young when I got married," Kidman told Red magazine in 2016, reflecting on her marriage to Cruise. The Moulin Rouge! actress was 23 at the time, while the Top Gun: Maverick producer was 28. "I look back now and I'm like, 'What?'" Shortly after their wedding, the couple worked together again on Ron Howard 's drama Far and Away , which hit theaters in 1992. That same year, the duo adopted daughter Isabella shortly after her birth. In 1995, they adopted son Connor, who later starred in the films Seven Pounds and Red Dawn . Cruise and Kidman collaborated for a third time on Stanley Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut , which premiered in 1999. "We were happily married through that," the Hours actress told The New York Times in 2020, reflecting on where she stood with Cruise while making the controversial movie. "We would go go-kart racing after [intense] scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at three in the morning." Less than two years after the movie's release, however, the couple announced their separation. "Citing the difficulties inherent in divergent careers which constantly keep them apart, they concluded that an amicable separation seemed best for both of them at this time," a rep for the duo said in a February 2001 statement. The Jerry Maguire actor later moved on with Penélope Cruz before marrying Katie Holmes in 2006. Cruise and the Dawson's Creek alum, who share daughter Suri (born in 2006), split in 2012. Kidman, for her part, was briefly engaged to Lenny Kravitz in 2003. In June 2006, she wed country star Keith Urban , with whom she shares daughters Sunday Rose (born in 2008) and Faith (born in 2010). Despite the end of her relationship with Cruise, Kidman has said she's not bothered by the perpetual interest in their romance. “I was young. I think I offered it up?” the Big Little Lies alum told Harper's Bazaar in September 2021 when asked whether the continued fascination bothers her. “Maybe I’ve gotten a bit more trepidatious, but I’m always trying to be as open as possible. I just prefer to live in the world that way.” Keep scrolling for a look back at Cruise and Kidman's relationship:

The twosome met while filming Days of Thunder , which also starred Robert Duvall , Randy Quaid and Cary Elwes . “I remember being so nervous and seeing Tom Cruise drive up in a Porsche," Kidman recalled during a 2016 interview on The Jess Cagle Show . "He got out of the car and walked through the door, and I was like, ‘Ah.’ My jaw dropped.”

The Interview With the Vampire actor and the Australian actress tied the knot in a private ceremony attended by their family members less than one year after meeting. “He basically swept me off my feet," Kidman told Vanity Fair in 2002. "I fell madly, passionately in love. And as happens when you fall in love, my whole plan in terms of what I wanted for my life — I was like, ‘Forget it. This is it.’ I was consumed by it, willingly.”

The duo made a splash at the premiere of Cruise's film Interview With the Vampire , which also starred Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas . "He's quite eccentric," Kidman told Vanity Fair of her husband one month earlier. "He's just an odd one. He has his own little quirks and mannerisms. He's kind of wild — and I love that."

How Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise's relationship with Tom Cruise will change once she turns 18

The mission impossible star has reportedly been estranged from his teenage daughter for years.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise posing during happier times in marriage

It's a big week in the Holmes household, as Katie Holmes' daughter with her ex-husband Tom Cruise , Suri , is poised to turn 18 years old on April 18 , finally entering adulthood.

The actress, 45, and her teen daughter lead their lives away from the spotlight, while Tom, 61, has reportedly been estranged from his youngest for over a decade.

After their divorce in 2012, Katie was granted full custody of Suri, and Tom agreed as part of their settlement to pay $400,000 per year in child support to his ex-wife for Suri's upbringing.

Suri Cruise has grown up in New York City

However, that agreement lasts until Suri turns 18, and is set to expire this week, after 12 years of payments, which roughly equate to $33k a month in child support (Katie did not ask for spousal support in their divorce).

While it is reported that Tom might still pay for Suri's insurance bills, plus contribute to her college tuition (as one of the highest paid actors in the world), it seems like the end of his child support might just extinguish one of his last remaining links to his daughter.

Recent reports suggested that Katie was uncomfortable with the end of the payments, but her attorney Jonathan W. Wolfe, Esq., shut those rumors down with a statement to RadarOnline.com back in March by asserting that the actress and filmmaker would not be affected.

"The story is riddled with falsehoods," he shared. "One would hope there would be more newsworthy items to cover, and publications would avoid reporting as 'facts' claims from anonymous sources peddling such obvious misrepresentations."

Suri is also reportedly poised to be heading off to college this fall, with her Dawson's Creek star mom being heavily involved in the application process and supporting her big move every step of the way.

The 17-year-old may not be a huge fan of the spotlight , but she's taking after her famous parents when it comes to her creative abilities, having contributed to her mom's productions with her vocal stylings on multiple occasions, most recently 2023's Rare Objects , which was Katie's third directorial venture.

She also sang a cover of "Blue Moon" for her 2022 film Alone Together , and in her interview with Glamour , Katie spoke about the joys of always having her daughter by her side in her professional life as well. Check out her singing voice in the video below...

"I hope she always does something on my films," the proud mom gushed. "I always ask her. But both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry, which is, you have these projects and you become a family with people. And it's this safe, beautiful, creative space."

Suri and Katie have a close bond

She described being a mom to a teenage girl as wanting to "protect" her, adding: "What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her. I'm very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She's an incredible person."

Suri Cruise turns 18 and is still estranged from Tom: ‘Not a Scientologist, never will be’

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Now she turns 18 on Thursday and faces a choice: Whether to return to the level of fame she had as a kid — when there were blogs devoted to her fashion — or maintain the carefully-guarded life Holmes has built for her since she blindsided Cruise by filing for divorce.

The dark-haired teen has grown up in Manhattan largely shielded from the spotlight by her loving and highly protective mom, 45, far removed from her 60-year-old father’s Church of Scientology.

As Page Six revealed last year, Suri is estranged from her famous father and the pair have no relationship.

Tom Cruise smiles as he holds Suri Cruise, with Katie Holmes beside him.

An industry source told us this week that the “Mission: Impossible” star has not seen Suri since 2012. “Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” the source said.

“This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Holmes told Glamour magazine in 2023 that she likes to “protect” Suri from the public eye “because she was so visible at a young age.”

“I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She’s an incredible person. She’s my heart,” she added.

Suri Cruise jumps in the water with her dad Tom Cruise at Disney World.

Tom Cruise holds Suri Cruise as they leave her gymnastics class in NYC in July 2012.

But when Suri was just 6, Holmes filed for divorce after six years of marriage with the help of her dad, Martin Holmes, a fierce attorney, and through a secret plan that entailed using burner phones.

Cruise was taken completely by surprise by the filing while he was on the set of “Oblivion” in Iceland in June 2012.

He and Suri were last seen together at Disney World in the summer of 2012.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise ride the Schenley Plaza's carousel.

In November 2013, during a deposition in his $50 million court battle against a pair of tabloid magazines, the “Top Gun” star admitted that Holmes had filed for divorce “to protect Suri from Scientology,” court documents revealed.

Despite not having a relationship; as per their divorce agreement, Cruise, who has an estimated $600 million fortune, agreed to pay Holmes $400,000 a year until Suri turns 18 as well as future “medical, dental, insurance, education, college and other extracurricular costs”.

Scientology lies at the heart of the question over Suri’s future.

Tom Cruise carries Suri Cruise on set in Sevilla, Spain.

Holmes, who rose to fame in the TV hit, “Dawson’s Creek,” is believed to have signed multiple non-disclosure documents that will prevent her from ever talking about her marriage to Cruise — and her time inside Scientology.

Tom Cruise holds Bella Cruise, while Nicole Kidman holds Connor Cruise.

Tom Cruise jumps on Oprah Winfrey's sofa.

Suri Cruise and Katie Holmes go dog walking in Central Park, NYC.

Augustine is married to Karen de la Carriere, who was one of the highest-ranking church leaders until she left in 2010 and told Page Six, “The situation with Suri is a larger story about Scientology and the subject of how they make people no longer useful to them or threats to them non-persons.

“It’s like they cease to exist and that’s what happened to Suri.”

Back in August 2020, Leah Remini — one of the most famous celebrities to leave and speak out against Scientology — told us that she believed Cruise, who now lives mainly in the UK , was waiting until Suri is older so he could indoctrinate her into Scientology.

Suri Cruise and Katie Holmes hold hands as they go shopping.

Remini, who attended Cruise and Holmes’ November 2006 Italian wedding at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle, said, “I’m sure his master plan is to wait until Suri gets older so that he can lure her into Scientology and away from her mother.”

Suri has tiptoed very gently into her parents’ showbusiness world while attending her exclusive Manhattan day school, singing “Blue Moon” in the opening credits of Holmes’ 2022 movie, “Alone Together.”

“I always want the highest level of talent,” Holmes said. “So I asked her! She’s very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing.”

Suri also sang in the film “Rare Objects,” which Holmes also directed.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes hold hands and cuddle after getting married.

Holmes will this year return to Broadway in a revival of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town”.

Tom Cruise hugs his children, Bella and Connor Cruise.

But she is now getting ready for her daughter to leave the nest.

“You want them to stay with you forever, but they’re these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need — and then they’re going to go,” she told Town & Country in 2017.

“And that’s going to be very, very sad for me.”

As for the future, former Scientology spokesperson Mike Rinder, who has not seen his own two eldest children since he quit the organization, told Page Six, “Suri is not a Scientologist and never will be…she deserves love and sympathy.”

Breaking News

Entertainment | more than 20 previously uncounted ballots discovered during congressional district 16 recount, entertainment, entertainment | tom cruise’s daughter suri will soon be free to talk about their estrangement and scientology: report, with suri cruise turning 18 this week, she should be free to speak out about her father, his beliefs and their rift, a scientology expert says in a new report.

Tom Cruise’s three ex-wives, Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, probably would have a lot to say about being married to the famously intense mega-star and their time inside his beloved Church of Scientology.

But these women have mostly kept Cruise’s secrets, with experts in the inner workings of Scientology saying that Kidman and Holmes, in particular, probably signed non-disclosure agreements when their marriages to the “Top Gun” actor ended.

But no such agreement probably applies to Cruise’s youngest child, Suri Cruise, from whom he’s long been estranged, Page Six reported . With Suri turning 18 on Thursday, she and her mother Katie Holmes should no longer receive the reported $400,000 a year Cruise paid as part of a divorce settlement. Cruise also agreed to pay Suri’s college and health care costs, Page Six added.

As an adult, Suri Cruise should be free to speak out about her father, his beliefs and their rift, journalist and Scientology expert Tony Ortega told Page Six.

“Suri would have been too young to sign any agreement (when her parents divorced in 2012), but she will now be free to talk if she wants to and it’s going to be really interesting if she has something to say,” Ortega said.

Page Six said that representatives for Cruise, Holmes and the Church of Scientology did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It’s possible that Suri may choose to stay silent about her famous father. For one thing, if she gave an interview or published a tell-all about him, she’d probably have to give up the mostly private life she’s been able to enjoy thus far. People credit a protective Holmes with trying to give Suri as normal life as is possible under the circumstances, while raising her in New York City.

“Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” a source told Page Six. “This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Suri’s life, though, started out in a very public way. As Page Six pointed out, she was once “the most famous baby in America” because of the very high-profile way that Cruise conducted his courtship of the “Dawson’s Creek” star, who was 16 years younger that Cruise when they began dating. When news came that Cruise and Holmes had become parents to a baby daughter in April 2006, a global frenzy erupted, with media outlets competing to be the first to publish the little girl’s photos.

At the age of five months, Suri Cruise made her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair, in a glossy photo taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz.

For the first six years of Suri’s life, Cruise seemed to dote on his youngest daughter and enjoy being seen with her in public. He also is the father of two older children, Isabella, now 31, and Connor Cruise, now 29, whom he adopted with Kidman.

But Suri’s relationship with her father changed after Holmes reportedly “blindsided” him by filing for divorce in 2012. The following year, Cruise gave a deposition in his $50 million court fight against a pair of tabloid magazines and admitted that Holmes filed for divorce “to protect Suri from Scientology,” court documents revealed, Page Six reported.

There have been questions about whether Holmes and her daughter were declared Scientology “suppressive persons,” or SPs, after the divorce. According to Scientology , SPs are people who have “anti-social” personalities who seek to “upset, continuously undermine, spread bad news about and denigrate betterment activities and groups.” Scientology recommends that members stay away from SPs for their own well-being, but the church’s own website said it is “extremely rare” to label someone an SP.

“We don’t know for sure if Katie was ever declared an SP,” Ortega told Page Six. A regular church member, whose wife and daughter left Scientology, would be encouraged to disconnect from them, but Cruise might have been spared that option because of his “top celebrity” status. “He gets to ignore all this stuff,” Ortega said.

In any case, Holmes secured sole custody of their daughter, while Cruise retained “meaningful” visitation rights, according to The Blast . Yet, public sightings of Cruise with his daughter soon dwindled, with Page Six saying they were last seen together at Disney World in the summer of 2012.

Even if Suri has lived a mostly private life, paparazzi are known to follow her and her mother Katie Holmes around the streets of Manhattan. Still, as Suri reportedly prepares to head off to college, Holmes revealed in a 2023 interview with Glamour that she has grown up to be “an incredible person.”
