ALTA NORWAY NORTHERN LIGHTS: AN INTRODUCTION

Lovingly known as the “City of Northern Lights”, the small but mighty town of Alta (located far north of Norway) is undoubtedly one of the best places in the world to see the Aurora Borealis!

In fact, it has been known for the Northern Lights to be visible in Alta Norway for 200 days out of the year! This is due to its long, dark Winters and relatively short daylight hours even during the Summer months.

Plus – with the Solar Cycle set to burst with the strongest activity of Northern Lights displays for 11 years this Winter 2024 / 2025, there has never been a better time to go out and see the Aurora Borealis in Alta!

Join us below as we explain everything you need to know about seeing the Northern Lights in Alta Norway this Winter:

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ALTA?

While there is always the chance to spot strong Northern Light flurries above Alta town itself, there are a few key spots in the area that are notorious for fantastic Aurora success rates.

These include the nearby Alta fjordlands out on the coast or the Finnmarksvidda Plateau set inland.

Both of these remote and raw locations have one thing in common – no light pollution – which makes for the perfect recipe for Northern Light spotting.

When you join a guided Alta Norway Northern Lights tour , your guide will absolutely take you to at least one of these locations (or similar) to guarantee your best chances!

A photo showing the incredible Aurora Borealis you can spot with the relentless and top quality Rovaniemi Northern Lights tour with Nordic Odyssey! This is a real and honest glowing review for when we personally took this tour when visiting Rovaniemi!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ALTA?

The best time of year to see the Northern Lights in Alta Norway is during its Winter months, ideally between end of September into late March.

However the Northern Lights in Alta have been known to be visible even into early April, though sightings are much fewer as the daylight hours begin to reappear for Spring.

While September to March is the key season for seeing Northern Lights in Alta, the viewing success rate depends on the unique conditions of each evening. The ideal conditions are a cold, clear and cloudless night with strong forecasted solar activity.

Another brilliant city in northern Norway known for its northern lights is Tromsø, just a 35 minute internal flight from Alta. Be sure to check out our 5 days in Tromsø travel itinerary !

Alta – Aurora Hunting Adventure

Alta is a fascinating city and an excellent base from which to explore the fjords and mountains of this corner of Northern Norway. With its own Igloo Hotel and an exceptional Aurora reputation, it's a wonderful base for a short break.

This four-night holiday is packed with experiences that will give you access to remote and beautiful landscapes, an insight into the culture of the Sámi people of Norway and the chance to experience some activity highlights and unforgettable experiences. The focus in the evenings is on searching for the Aurora Borealis and, as Alta is named the 'City of the Northern Lights', you are in a prime location.

One of the key Aurora activities is a Northern Lights hunt on your arrival day in Alta. With a local expert guiding you and using the latest forecasts you will be in the best possible hands. You will also enjoy an Aurora reindeer sleigh ride and an evening husky safari.

A key highlight is a chance to meet some of the local Sámi people and hear something of their culture and traditions before enjoying a short reindeer sleigh ride. Other activities in the itinerary include snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing, as well as a visit to the wonderful Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel.

To add the proverbial cherry on top, we can also arrange for you to spend the night in a snow room at the Igloo Hotel and we have also left plenty of free time for you to tailor your trip with activities to suit you.

northern lights tour with alta adventure

Upon arrival in Alta, a local guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your centrally-located hotel.

After you have had some time to settle in, we recommend you enjoy an early dinner as your Northern Lights hunt will kick off your holiday at around 7 pm.

You will be picked up by your expert guide for this inaugural Northern Lights activity and your host will consult solar activity and weather charts prior to commencing the chase, in order to choose the best possible route for your journey this evening.

You will be given an insight into how the Northern Lights are caused during a brief overview of the science behind them as you travel deep into the wilds. With a little luck, the Aurora will shine and welcome you to Norway in style. This activity lasts around four hours in total.

Included Meals:   None

Today we get you straight out and exploring the wilderness with a thrilling snowmobile safari to a wonderful viewpoint.  You will travel in pairs and as the trail is around 10km each way, you will have the chance to swap drivers at the midpoint (assuming both have a full driving license). During the safari, your guide will serve some hot drinks and a snack in a traditional Lavvo (a traditional tent) before heading back to Alta on the specially marked snowmobile trails. Including transfers from the city, you will be out for around 3 hours in total.

Full instruction will be provided before you set off. Please note that in order to drive a snowmobile you should be over 18 years old and have a full driving licence.

You will have a couple of hours to yourself this afternoon and so you can explore at leisure and enjoy lunch in one of the restaurants or cafes in town.

Later in the afternoon, you will be transferred to Sorrisniva, home of the famous Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel. Upon arrival, you will have the chance to explore the hotel’s rooms and suites, admiring the ice art and sculptures as you go.

You are then in for a culinary treat in the warm restaurant here as you enjoy a delicious three-course meal. The menus typically feature many fine local delicacies which are chosen from the rich variety of seafood and wild produce available in the region. The chefs here have won awards for their innovation and use of traditional ingredients with some added modern flair.

After dinner, you will enjoy a wonderful taste of Sámi culture and the chance to enjoy a reindeer sleigh ride whilst keeping watch for the Northern Lights. Your Sámi hosts will provide an insight into their traditions, history and what they feel the future holds. You will meet some of their reindeer and travel in a reindeer-pulled sleigh under the night sky. Warm drinks and snacks will top off the evening and will be served around the fire in a traditional Sámi tent or lavvo.

You then have a choice of whether you would like to return to Sorrisniva for an unforgettable stay in a snow room or whether you would prefer to head back to your hotel.

Included Meals:   Breakfast, Dinner

Today you will be heading out for a trio of wonderful activities as you enjoy some of the most traditional Lappish pastimes.

First on the agenda for today is a snowshoe hike in the forests around Alta. Your guide will show you how to strap on the snowshoes before you set out on a leisurely hike. Throughout your exploration, in the deep snow, you will be shown any animal tracks as well as some of the local flora and fauna.

At the midway point, you will stop to enjoy a spot of ice fishing. Here you will start by drilling a hole through the thick ice, before dropping a line down and waiting for the fish to bite. As you patiently fish, your guide will prepare a campfire lunch before you head back on your snowshoes to the hotel.

To top off an already exciting day, this evening you will get to experience one of the real highlights of any active visit to Norway, a dog sled safari.

At a local husky farm, you will meet with the musher and be introduced to the dogs. A full briefing will follow, and you will be shown how to handle a team and the sled. The dogs will make their desire for the trail apparent as they eagerly bark in anticipation. As soon as you release the brake on the sled, however, they do fall silent and focus on the task at hand. Travelling in pairs you will each take turns standing and sitting on the sled as you travel along the Alta River Valley. As any remaining light begins to fade, your head torches will help you to navigate along the route behind your guide. You will cover around 15km during the safari.

Back at the base, you have the choice of once again heading back to your hotel or spending a remarkable night at the husky farm in their ‘glamping’ accommodation. At the farm you can enjoy dinner in the dining room, relax with fellow travellers and take a dip in the hot tub before snuggling up in your insulated and heated lavvo. For more information, please speak to one of our Travel Experts.

Included Meals:   Breakfast, Lunch

After breakfast,  enjoy  a visit to the Northern Light Cathedral,  a brilliantly-modern design which   has become one of the most iconic architectural triumphs in Northern Scandinavia. It is designed to mimic the movement of the Northern Lights with large titanium sheets positioned to look like a spectacular Aurora display.?

Following this, today has been left free for you to tailor your time. Browse our extensive list of unbelievable experiences in the ‘Personalise’ section. You could enjoy a boat tour to see more of the Altafjord, try skiing, or spend some time learning all about Alta with a guided walking tour.

Included Meals:   Breakfast

Sadly, today you must bid farewell to Norway and head home. You will be transferred to the airport in good time for your return flights.

If you would like to extend your time here in Norway or would like to perhaps spend a night or two in Oslo on your way home then either can be arranged, simply talk to one of our Travel Experts for further details.

Searching for the Northern Lights by boat is a fantastic experience that is only available in a handful of locations. The sea can act as the perfect mirror to reflect the Aurora, creating a wonderful sight, should conditions be right. Travelling by boat also means that you have a better chance of outrunning any potential cloud cover.

You will sail into the archipelago, stopping at an island, where you will enjoy hot drinks around a campfire, as you search the skies for the Northern Lights. You may also choose to upgrade this activity to include a wilderness dinner, for a supplement.

Top places to watch the Northern Lights in Russia

  • #Petrozavodsk
  • #Special Interest

Did you know that Russia is one of the eight countries in the world, where you can view the northern lights? If you have always dreamt of admiring this mesmerizing spectacle, here are the top 5 destinations in Russia to do this. A trip to Russia in winter is a challenging but unforgettable experience which will bring lots of insights into the local lifestyle and will allow seeing Russia from a different perspective.

01 Murmansk

northern lights tour with alta adventure

The region of Murmansk on the Kola Peninsula is located in the far north-west of Russia, near Finland. With a population of 300,000, this is the world’s biggest city beyond the Arctic Circle, which makes it an outstanding location, where you can enjoy nature, yet have all the city amenities near you.

Although it is possible to see the Northern Lights from Murmansk, for better chances, you may consider a small village called Teriberka Just 120 kilometres away from the city. A conspicuous fact about winter in Murmansk is that it is mild, while the average temperature goes 10-15 Celsius below zero.

The Aurora show, however, is not only limited to the winter period, meaning you can plan your trip for mid-September to mid-April.

Since the Northern Lights is unlikely to be predicted, as it depends on the magnetic activity of the Sun, make sure to have enough time to try your luck and stay in the area for several days. While waiting for Aurora, you can experience other entertainment activities, such as skiing or dog sledging in the Murmansk area.

02 Arkhangelsk region

northern lights tour with alta adventure

Arkhangelsk is another large city in the Arctic Circle. It is nowadays a modern city with an important historical centre and unique wooden architecture. The flight from Moscow to Arkhangelsk takes about two hours, a journey by train – about 22 hours, with an outstanding view on Russian winter.

When looking for the brighter sky, it is worth going further from the populated area, for example, consider Severodvinsk. The lights there differ by special green shade and flicker. The Aurora Borealis can last as short as 10 minutes or can go on for several days, there is no way of predicting its duration in advance.

While waiting for the sky to start the spectacle, you can visit the open-air museum of wooden architecture “Malye Korely”.

northern lights tour with alta adventure

Kirovsk is located near the Khibiny Mountains on the Kola Peninsula, where many tourists go for a skiing trip. The recommended resorts to check out are Kukisvumchorr, Bolshoi Vudyavr and Kolasportland.

Beware that the climate there is more severe. The higher you go, however, the clearer and brighter the sky becomes, leaving you with more chances to see the Aurora. Your hike up will be rewarded with thousands of seemingly dancing lights in the sky.

04 Naryan-Mar

northern lights tour with alta adventure

Another outstanding location for a great Aurora experience is the polar Naryan-Mar. It is the capital of the Nenets Autonomous District famous for reindeer farms, fishing and oil. While watching the Northern Lights there, one can immerse into local myths, legends, and indigenous lore, as well as experience a journey through Russia’s heartland.

The best period to observe the Lights is from November to March. The colours of the phenomena in this region are exceptional, and the flicker adds to the magic. The flight to Naryan-Mar from Moscow will take about three hours.

northern lights tour with alta adventure

This destination is recommended only to the most persistent and experienced travellers, as the region is famous for the coldest weather in the world. Temperatures there can drop down to minus 60 degrees Celsius!

It is quite probable to see the Northern Lights near the regional capital — the city of Yakutsk. The sky here looks like a lavender-green star-encrusted veil. The flights from Moscow to Yakutsk take 6.5 hours.

General tips to prepare for a Northern Lights trip:

  • Arrange a transport: If you want to go further from a city and see the Aurora from a local settlement, you will need to book a tour in advance to transport you into the wilder parts.
  • Get ready to take pictures: If you aspire to capture this natural magic, you will need a tripod and a camera with manual mode settings. For better results, make sure you learn about ISO and shutter speed.
  • Get Warm: The weather in winter in Russia corresponds to all the stereotypes, so once in the Arctic Circles you should prepare many layers of clothing. As hunting for northern lights takes some time, make sure you wear wool socks, gloves, scarf or even thermal clothing.

Best conditions: make sure to escape the city lights and look for dark skies. Before going on a hunt, check the weather forecast for a cloudless sky. Also check the information on the solar flares, as solar activity forecasts

  • Moscow Metro Tour : Go deep underground on a subway tour of the famous Moscow metro. The world’s deepest metro system is renowned for its palatial, art-adorned stations, complete with marble columns and chandeliers.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.
