The Angel Falls are the highest waterfall on earth and one of the most popular travel destinations in South America . But Venezuela has a lot more to offer. Untouched jungles, bizarre moon landscapes and snowy peaks only constitute a few of the country's extremely diverse landscape areas.
Geography - At the Caribbean Sea
Venezuela is located at the Caribbean coast , enclosed by Colombia, Guyana and Brazil . 23 states , one capital and several Federal Dependencies constitute the country in the far north of South America. Besides the capital of Caracas , the cities of Maracaibo, Valencia and Ciudad Guayana are worth seeing. Although the climate is generally categorised as tropical , there are considerable temperature fluctuations because of the different altitudes. The average yearly temperature is 21 °C and very consistent . It gets much warmer in other regions, especially in summer. In the high mountain regions , it does not get any warmer than 8 °C. Some peaks are covered in snow all year. The dry season lasts from November to April . The rest of the year has high precipitation. Waterproof clothes and shoes are part of every traveller's basic equipment, especially in October.
Nature - Gigantic waterfalls and table mountains
Venezuela is characterised by extraordinary natural areas . The country can be divided into four main regions : the rugged mountain ranges of the Andes , the vast Orinoco Delta , the Guiana Highlands and the Maracaibo Lowlands . Untouched jungle , deep marshes and snowy peaks are only a few examples on a long list of natural regions . Most people think of the Angel Falls first when they think of Venezuela - the highest waterfall on earth . The water pours down as a sea of mist and clouds for almost one kilometre , the exact number is between 978 and 980 metres. The plateaus of the Highlands , the great table mountains , are a memorable sight too. One of the most impressive table mountains is the magnificent Gran Sabana . The tropical rainforests and cloud forests are home to orchids , bromeliads and vanilla orchids . Rare animal species such as tapirs , pumas and sloths  populate these regions. In addition, you see bloodsucking bats, voracious alligators  and piranhas. Besides the Andes and the tropical forests, visitors can discover Lake Maracaibo (13,000 kmÂČ), the Caribbean coast (2,800 km) or the country's inhospitable desert landscapes - an adventure without equal.
Natural sights - The Angel Falls, the Orinoco and Los Roques
Over 60 percent of the country's area are protected . One of the most beautiful national parks is Canaima National Park . It accommodates the legendary Angel Falls (Salto Ăngel), who were named after the discoverer and amateur pilot James Angel . He explored the gigantic waterfall by plane in 1935. A trip into the park by plane still offers a spectacular sights . Via the rivers of RĂo Carrao  and RĂo ChurĂșn, visitors can get very close to the waterfall. The moon landscape  of the Roraima  is one of the country's highlights. In fact, this region looks like it is from another planet. The gigantic sand dunes in Coro look equally bizarre. Visitors may feel like they are somewhere in the Eastern Desert. You should not miss out on a boat tour  through the Orinoco Delta . With a bit of luck, you can spot the trusting  Amazon river dolphins . Travellers who do not want to move far away from the capital of Caracas can take the  cable car  into the  El Ăvila National Park  and enjoy its waterfalls during a long hike . Another tour leads you to the glacier  of the  Pico Pan de AzĂșcar . Venezuela's highest mountain, the Pico BĂłlivar (4,981 m), is covered in snow all year. A great way of ending holidays in Venezuela is a trip to Los Roques archipelago . Unique sandy beaches  and the turquoise sea  make this natural trip an unforgettable experience.
Culture - From the settlement to the capital
Native American tribes , which lived on fishing and tillage farming, were the first inhabitants of the present-day territory of Venezuela. Not much is known about that time any more. The first European  who arrived in the country was Columbus  in 1498. The following year, Amerigo Vespucci  reached the unknown country with his ships. According to legend, the stilt houses  he found there reminded him of Venice and so he named the country " Venezuela " - the  " small Venice ". In the 16th century, the first settlements  were built and Caracas was founded. It has developed into the country's cultural capital  and offers a wide range  of exhibitions, art events and sights.
Cultural sights - Caracas, Coro and Native American villages
The capital of Caracas, which was founded in 1567 , is located at an altitude of 800 to 1,000 metres  in a fertile, green valley  in the middle of the El Ăvila  massif . Holidaymakers should visit its great cathedral , the beautiful town hall  and the Church of San Francisco (Iglesia de San Francisco). The university city of Caracas as well as the historical centre and harbour of Coro are part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage . The historical old town  of Ciudad BolĂvar is also worth seeing. Travellers who want to follow the traces of the indigenous population  should visit one of the Native American villages  in the jungle.
Experience - Tasting muchacho and meeting Merengue dancers
Due to Venezuela's history, the country's cuisine is influenced by Europe . In addition, you find several delicious local dishes . Examples are the maize flatbread arepa , which is stuffed with cheese or meat, and muchacho , a roasted pig in a juicy sauce. The national dish pabellón  consists of beef, beans and fried plantains. Popular drinks are fresh fruit juices . In the evening, delicious Venezuelan rum is added to the juices. Coffee lovers should not miss out on the country's coffee . It is very strong  but all the more aromatic . A pouch of freshly ground beans is a popular souvenir as is cocoa  or handmade Native American jewellery . Chinchorros , colourful hammocks , are particularly authentic products. Venezuela's nightlife is not to be underestimated. Fiery rhythms  and extrovert dancer s  move to Merengue . It is easy for visitors to get in touch with the locals on the dance floor. You find live music , discos, bars  and restaurants with  long opening hours  in the capital and the tourist locations.
Activities - A bathing and fishing paradise
The most beautiful bathing beaches  are located on Margarita Island (Isla Margarita), Los Roques archipelago  and along the Caribbean coast . Venezuela is also known among divers . Wonderful coral gardens , unexplored grottoes  and shipwrecks  are waiting around Isla Margarita. Fishers can also go on an adventure here. Quick payaras , giant clarias and vicious piranhas lurk in the Orinoco Delta . Travellers can go on hikes everywhere. The jungle , the beaches and the highlands  of Mérida offer stunning  hiking and trekking routes . Mountaineers  enjoy the Andes and Pico Humboldt is a popular climbing location .
Information
The best time for travelling Venezuela is the dry season  from  November to April  but a trip to the country is worth one's while at any time of the year. Venezuela is only a stone's throw away from the Caribbean . Many cruise lines offer tours from Venezuela to the beautiful Caribbean islands.
An extraordinarily diverse and extreme natural landscape  makes Venezuela an appealing destination for all lovers of nature  and adventurers . The wonderful beaches  at the Caribbean Sea offer room for relaxation  and make many holidaymakers' dreams  come true.

If you havenât heard of Venezuelaâs Angel Falls, the world’s tallest waterfall, just picture a real-life Indiana Jones adventure deep in the jungles of South America, and youâll be off to a good start. Buried deep in the heart of the southeastern jungles of Venezuela. this natural marvel is so phenomenal that you simply need to visit Angel Falls to believe it.
Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, explodes from the top of a pink-hued mesa thousands of feet above an emerald-colored jungle and plummets dramatically into a churning pool of water below. The waterfall, located within Canaima National Park, is impressive in its own right, but what makes it even more special is that it takes passion and determination to get there.
Surrounded by dense tropical rainforests, the falls offer breathtaking views and a sense of untouched wilderness, contributing to its popularity among tourists and photographers.
Named not for the celestial being, but for Jimmy Angel , an American bush pilot who crashed his airplane atop the sandstone-capped mesa in the 1930s, Angel Falls has always been a mysterious and mesmerizing place. The mesa, Auyantepui, is buried in the lush wilderness with no road access. The only way to see the falls today is from the air, by boat trip up the river through Devilâs Canyon, or by a short hike to the viewpoint of the falls.
It is the trip of a lifetime. However, as with most things that are once-in-a-lifetime, it requires a bit of extra legwork to make happen. Still, for those with the drive to see this natural marvel, the experience is absolutely worth the work.
TRAVEL ADVISORY: The U.S. State Department has Venezuela listed as Level 4: Do Not Travel. We strongly advise that you read their report before considering a trip to Venezuela at this time.
How To Visit Amazing Angel Falls, Venezuela
Where is angel falls.
The tallest waterfall in the world, Angel Falls ( Salto Ăngel in Spanish) is located within Canaima National Park in the Gran Sabana region of BolĂvar state. Spanning more than 11,500 square miles in the wilderness of southern Venezuela, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most impressive places in the world. The majority of Canaima is covered with table mountain formations with breathtaking cliffs and beautiful, arching waterfalls, including Angel Falls, which, at 3,000 feet, is the worldâs highest waterfall .
Canaima National Park sits on the southeastern border of Venezuela near Guyana (another destination that is definitely worth a Google search!) and Brazil . It is difficult to reach, but its remoteness is part of what makes it so attractive.
Fun Fact: Before it was known as Angel Falls, indigenous Pemon people called it Kerepakupai MerĂș or Parekupa Vena . In the Pemon language, Kerepakupai MerĂș means “waterfall of the deepest place,” while ParakupĂĄ VenĂĄ means “the fall from the highest point.”
How Do You Get To Angel Falls?
First, itâs important to note that it is not possible to reach this beautiful place in Brazil by car since there are no roads in the area. The most popular way to visit the Falls is by flying to the town of Canaima, Venezuela . There are no direct flights to Canaima from Caracas, Venezuela â you must first fly to Ciudad BolĂvar, Venezuela, or Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela.
Angel Falls Package Tours
Purchasing a package tour that includes the trek to the falls, as well as accommodations, flights, and meals, is the easiest and most cost-effective way to see the natural marvel. Most visitors who visit Canaima do so through these package tours. The tours that include airfare are the most convenient for travelers since flights tend to sell out far in advance.
Angel-Eco Tours
Booking your tour in advance is key and there are many tour companies to choose from. One that consistently receives good reviews is Angel-Eco Tours , which offers a three-day, two-night Canaima National Park experience. The tour includes assistance getting to and from Canaima from Caracas. On the first two days, visitors tour other sights in the area, and on the third day, they depart for the falls in a motorized canoe from Ucaima Port. The tour features moderate hikes to nearby lookout points. If youâre looking for something more adventurous and challenging, Angel-Eco Tours also offers a nine-day trek that includes Angel Falls and a visit to Roraima, Brazil.
Tapuy Lodge
Located lakeside on Canaima Lagoon in Venezuela, Tapuy Lodge offers magnificent views of Hacha, Golondrina, and Ucaima Falls. Its 16 simple, comfortable rooms come with private bathrooms with hot water, air conditioning, and a fan.
There is a restaurant and a bar. The grassy area in front of the lodge is a perfect place to sit back and enjoy the unique backdrop of Canaima National Park where visitors can gaze at the sun rising above the dense forest and enjoy the scenery straight out of the ââLost Worldââ movie.
Posada Don Carlos
A very popular accommodation in Venezuelaâs second biggest city, Ciudad Bolivar, Posada Don Carlos , a tastefully decorated posada with simple but clean rooms, and one of the best places to stay in the whole city. Itâs a tastefully decorated posada with simple but clean rooms and a quiet and airy courtyard.
No other place in Ciudad Bolivar offers this kind of atmosphere. It’s located on Boyaca Street, five minutes from the Plaza Bolivar and 10 minutes from the viewpoint over the Orinoco River. From there, booking a trip to Canaima and Angel Falls is easy.
Osprey Expeditions
Osprey Expeditions is another highly-rated tour operator that offers treks to reach Angel Falls and other popular vantage points along the way. The company also assists with airport transfers to and from Canaima.
Hotel Package
Another way to visit the falls is to go through a lodge. WakĂŒ Lodge is one of the better boutique lodges in the region and offers customized packages for visiting Angel Falls. Many of these packages include airfare to and from Puerto Ordaz.
Flyover Tour
You can also book a flyover tour of the falls if the boat ride is too much of a time commitment.
When Is The Best Time To Visit?
Again, we advise you to read the U.S. State Department’s advisory on traveling to Venezuela at this time.
The busiest months of the year to visit Angel Falls are July, August, November, December, and January. This is when prices go up considerably, and you’ll be competing for the picturesque views with other visitors. Visitors who want to make a flyover tour can schedule them year-round, but if youâd like to visit on foot, you must arrive during the rainy season, from June through November. This is because the park has to ensure that the Carrao River level is high enough for the water to make it all the way to the falls. During the dry season between January and May, there aren’t any organized trips to the area, but the park is still accessible.
What Will You See At Angel Falls?
The height of the falls is reason enough to add them to your bucket list. Picture a plummet that is 16 times higher than Niagara Falls ! Already youâre starting with something incredible. Beyond that, the Venezuelan waterfall sits in the heart of the wilderness, with no road access, making the adventure to get to it the trip of a lifetime.
Buried in the misty, jade-hued jungle, Angel Falls explodes onto the scene, plunging from the mountain above. Most of the visitors to the falls get their first glimpse of them on the short trek from the river that brings all the boat tours in. Youâll emerge from the bush to see bright blue skies; majestic, rose-colored cliffs; and the impressive cascade gushing down the sheer rock face into the verdant valley below. You should also consider visiting the Iguazu falls if you like this view.
Where Should You Stay?
WakĂŒ Lodge is one of the most popular places to stay near Canaima National Park; itâs located near the lagoon offering views of the areaâs seven waterfalls. There are 19 rooms, one suite, and each room has its own balcony. WakĂŒ Lodgeâs tour packages include flights to and from Canaima, lodging, sightseeing, expeditions, and all meals. Visitors can choose a full-day expedition to Angel Falls or an overnight option.
Campamento Canaima
Campamento Canaima is another option for visitors to the park with 120 rooms in stand-alone cottages overlooking the lagoon. The cottages come in doubles, triples, and quads, all with daily room service, hot water, private bathrooms, and spectacular views. A bar and lounge round out the facilities. The hotel offers day trips to the falls as well as flyover tours.
Jungle Rudy’s Ucaima Camp
Jungle Rudy’s Ucaima Camp is yet another lodge with packages for visiting the falls. There are five cabins with balconies, hammocks, private bathrooms, and more. A dining room and salon with a view round out the amenities. Ucaima also has two cabins near the falls for visitors who are making the overnight trip to see them. Both cabins offer outdoor grills and spectacular views of the falls. The lodgeâs packages include various amenities, tour services, and extras like a welcome cocktail, insurance, and more.
What Else Is There To Do Near Angel Falls?
There are so many natural wonders and impressive sites on the way to Angel Falls that a trip to the falls is really the cherry on top. This part of Venezuela is home to undulating savannas, palm forests, rivers, towering cliffs, and table-top mountains called tepuis .
Canaima itself is a remote village â its biggest claim to fame is that it is the jumping-off point for exploring Angel Falls. However, the rest of Canaima National Park is beautiful and well worth exploring. At the center, the Laguna de Canaima (Canaima Lagoon), a reddish-colored reflective lagoon, features palm trees and pink sandy banks. The red and pink hues are due to tannins from decomposing plants over the decades. Seven stunning waterfalls tumble from the lagoon and most tours to Angel Falls include a short boat trip and hike that allow tour goers to explore these other falls as well.
The park is also home to Uruyén Canyon and the sacred Kavak Caves, which are thought to have been the site of mystic shaman ceremonies. Angel-Eco Tours offers hikes from Uruyén to Kavak or vice versa. The trip to the waterfalls of Kavak includes hiking, wading, and swimming in the canyons before reaching the powerful waterfalls that tumble in the distance. The hike from Uruyén to Kavak is about 5 miles and takes roughly 3 hours to complete at a leisurely pace. Accessing the caves requires an additional 1.5-mile walk on slightly steeper terrain.
Is Angel Falls Taller Than Niagara Falls?
Angel Falls, or Salto Angel in Spanish, is approximately 16 times taller than Niagara Falls and the worldâs tallest waterfall. According to the World Waterfall Database, about 50 other waterfalls worldwide are âtallerâ than Niagara Falls. The largest waterfall system in the world is The Iguazu Falls.
Does Angel Falls Ever Dry Up?
No, during the dry season, from December to March, there is less volume in the waterfall, but Angel Falls never dries up. The rainy season from June to early December is the best time for visiting the worldâs tallest waterfall in its full might.
Who Discovered Angel Falls?
Jimmie Angel discovered the falls in 1933 while searching for a valuable ore bed. âAngel’s Flight’, the book about his fascinating story, is available at the Jimmie Angel Historical Project. Angel Falls was also part of the inspiration for Paradise Falls, a fictional place in the American animated film Up.
Is Angel Falls Easy to Get To?
Angel Falls is not easy to get to. The famous waterfalls are located in an isolated Venezuelan jungle, and a flight from Ciudad BolĂvar is required to reach Canaima camp, the starting point for ChurĂșn river trips to the base of the worldâs highest waterfall.
Can I Go to Angel Falls on My Own?
You shouldnât visit Angel Falls on your own because it is extremely remote, deep inside Canaima National Park. Visiting Angels Falls is best done on a guided tour. Angel-Eco Tours and Osprey Expeditions offer popular tours to Salto Angel.

Roman Gabriel dies at 83. The first Filipino-American quarterback in NFL was MVP in 1969

Roman Gabriel had big size and a big arm when he was the No. 2 draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 1962. Even while playing in an era of grinding it out on the ground, he still holds the Ramsâ team record with 154 touchdown passes .
Gabriel, the first Filipino-American quarterback in the NFL and the league MVP in 1969, died Saturday. He was 83.
His son, Roman Gabriel III, announced his fatherâs death on social media, saying he died peacefully at home of natural causes.
In 2021, the elder Gabriel told the Los Angeles Times, âI am retired with heart problems and arthritis but happy.â He said he split time between Wilmington, North Carolina, and Little River, South Carolina.
âWe mourn the loss of Rams legend and football pioneer, Roman Gabriel,â the Rams said on X , formerly known as Twitter.
Gabriel, who played at North Carolina State and was a two-time player of the year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
He was 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, big for a quarterback in that era. Green Bay coach Vince Lombardi once described him as âa big telephone pole,â according to the Los Angeles Times.
Gabriel played 11 years for the Rams and five years with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was traded after the Rams acquired John Hadl.
âGabe was an amazing player and an even better mentor. Words canât explain my thanks for what a great teammate he was,â retired quarterback Ron Jaworski , whom Gabriel backed up on the Eagles in his final season, posted on X. âA special player and a better man!â
Gabriel was such a hot prospect that the Rams made him the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft, and the Oakland Raiders of the rival AFL selected him No. 1. Gabriel wound up signing with the Rams, though it took until George Allen was hired as coach in 1966 for Gabriel to start leaving a mark.
From 1967 to 1970, Gabriel led the Rams to a 41-14-4 record and two division titles, though never a playoff game. He was voted MVP in 1969 after throwing for 2,549 yards with 24 touchdown passes and five rushing scores.
Allen left for Washington after the 1970, and Gabriel was shipped to the Eagles in 1973. He was the NFL comeback player of the year, leading the league with 23 touchdown passes and 3,219 yards, as he tried to help revive the Eaglesâ offense.
After retiring, Gabriel worked briefly for CBS, calling NFL games.
He went into coaching, with stints at Cal Poly Pomona, the Boston Breakers of the USFL and Raleigh-Durham in the World League of American Football.
Gabriel also dabbled in acting. His movie credits included âSkidooâ starring Jackie Gleason in 1968, and 1969âs âThe Undefeatedâ starring John Wayne and Rock Hudson. He appeared in such TV shows as âGilliganâs Island,â âPerry Mason,â âIronsideâ and âWonder Woman.â He also joined Bob Hope on a USO tour of Vietnam.
