Pavement have announced a stacked roster of special guests for their upcoming tour of Australia, with each show featuring different supports.

Returning for their first tour Down Under since 2010, the indie-rock legends will play six headline shows across February and March. The run will kick off in Perth on Wednesday February 22, continuing along to Adelaide, Brisbane, Thirroul and Sydney, before wrapping up in Melbourne on Friday March 3.
Opening the show in Perth will be local psych-rock outfit Pond . Pavement will then be joined by Bad//Dreems in Adelaide, before Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever jump onboard for the Brisbane show. Floodlights are the only band performing at more than one show, appearing at both the Thirroul and Sydney dates. Lastly, Romero will kick the festivities off in Melbourne.
Tickets to all but that lattermost show (which is sold out) are on sale now – find them here .
In addition to their headline dates, Pavement will perform in Hobart as part of next year’s Mona Foma festival . They were the second band to be announced for the festival, after Bon Iver was revealed as the first act in August. The band will also be playing the inaugural Tent Pole festival in Geelong, where they’ll be joined by Spiderbait , Magic Dirt , Floodlights and more.
After first breaking up in 1999, Pavement reunited in 2010, embarking on a world tour that included several shows in Australia (and an appearance at that year’s Golden Plains festival). In 2019, the band announced they would reform once again to perform at 2020’s Primavera Sound, which was ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic.
In May of this year, the band played their first gig in 12 years , delivering a lengthy set at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. The following month, they finally performed at Primavera Sound in Barcelona and Portugal, before continuing with a headline tour of North America.

On it, they performed the ‘Perfect Sound Forever’ deep cut ‘Angel Carver Blues/Mellow Jazz Docent’, marking its first appearance on a setlist since 1996. In Philadelphia, too, they welcomed Kurt Vile out to perform ‘Zurich Is Stained’ .
Reflecting on Pavement’s second reunion in October, frontman Stephen Malkmus said: “The tour’s been great so far. I’m sort of like a tiger let out of the cage. An older, greyer tiger.” He later told NME that it’s been “really fun to get back” , however the band have no plans to release any new music. “It’s pretty much just pure nostalgia in my mind,” Malkmus said, opining that it would be “total cringe” if Pavement dropped a new record in the present.
Nevertheless, the band announced that a new musical titled Slanted! Enchanted! – based on their debut album, 1992’s ‘Slanted And Enchanted’ – would debut this month. The first two performances were held the Sheen Center in New York.
Pavement’s 2023 Australian tour dates are:
FEBRUARY Wednesday 22 – Boorloo/Perth, Concert Hall (with Pond) Friday 24 – Kaurna/Adelaide, Thebarton Theatre (with Bad//Dreems) Saturday 25 – nipaluna/Hobart, Mona Foma Tuesday 28 – Meanjin/Brisbane, Fortitude Music Hall (with Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever)
MARCH Wednesday 1 – Dharawal/Thirroul, Anita’s Theatre (with Floodlights) Thursday 2 – Warrang/Sydney, Enmore Theatre (with Floodlights) Friday 3 – Naarm/Melbourne, Palais Theatre (with Romero) // SOLD OUT Saturday 4 – Djilang/Geelong, Tent Pole Festival

In their decade-long early career, Pavement released five era-defining albums – Slanted And Enchanted (1992), Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten The Corners (1997) and Terror Twilight (1999) – before disbanding in 1999. Hailed by music critic Robert Christgau as “ the finest rock band of the ‘90s ”, Pavement’s 2010 reunion saw them play four sold-out benefit shows in NYC’s Central Park, visit Australia, and top bills of festivals including Coachella, Reading & Leeds, Primavera Sound and Pitchfork.
Pavement’s catalogue has seen a myriad of incarnations and bonus material unearthed, including career-spanning 2010 compilation Quarantine The Past , 2015 rarities collection A Secret History, Vol 1 , deluxe editions of the band’s first four studio albums, and a 2019 picture disc commemorating the 25th anniversary of Wowee Zowee . Most recently, in April 2022 Matador Records dropped the deluxe reissue of Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal – an exhaustive 45-track compilation featuring the remastered album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, live recordings, and even rough tracks from the band’s scrapped session at Sonic Youth’s Echo Canyon studio. April 2022 also saw the band’s first music video in 23 years, with 1999 b-side Harness Your Hopes’ a viral and streaming hit, amassing 80+ million streams on Spotify to date and trending on TikTok.
In August 2022, Matador released a limited red/white/black splatter vinyl 30th-anniversary edition of debut full-length Slanted and Enchanted , as well as the 15-track Courting Shutdown Offers demo cassette (a replica of what the band used to share with labels).

It was fair to wonder when the Pavement went on hiatus after touring in support of their final album Terror Twilight if fans would ever get to see them live again.
It took a number of years, with band members scattered across the country and participating in multiple new projects, but the band have begun performing live again. Although time has passed, the group easily capture the slacker majesty of their heyday as kings of the '90s indie scene.
If the band and audience are a little bit grayer these days, that's OK too. Indeed, a surprising number of people in the audience at a Pavement show are likely far too young to have seen them the first time around and appear to be there to take in the experience as new, rather than relive past glories. The band's sprawling, two hours-plus setlist leaves no one disappointed.
Mercurial frontman Steve Malkmus (whose departure for a solo career shelved the band originally) seems especially energized at these shows, bantering with the audience and belting out should-have-been hits like “Cut Your Hair” and “Stereo” with surprising and obvious joy.
The band's once loose sound has been tightened up considerably, as well. That being said, when the group kicks in to the shambolic, shaggy genius of “Summer Babe” (usually reserved for the encore), they still play fast, loud and jagged and demonstrate why they remain one of the most exciting groups of the past twenty years.

Pavement: “We Like Each Other, We Get Along, So It’s Cool”
By August Billy
There’s a café in Melbourne called Terror Twilight; Brisbane’s 4ZZZ radio station broadcasts a show called Brighten the Corners; Shady Lane was a Sydney-based indie rock band in the 2000s; Major Leagues drew a local following in Brisbane in the 2010s; Range Life is the name of a wine producer that uses grapes from all over Victoria.
What connects this list of local miscellanea? All of the names were borrowed from songs and albums released by Californian indie kings Pavement . This inventory is surely incomplete, but the point is, Pavement made a big impression on Australian audiences during their original lifespan, which lasted from 1989-1999.
So, when the band – led by vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Stephen Malkmus – reunited for a trip around the planet in 2010, they played seven Australian headline shows in sold-out theatre venues around the country. They’ll be back here in March 2023, having rebooted once more for a global tour that began at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound in June 2022.
Pavement haven’t released any music since their fifth album, 1999’s Nigel Godrich-produced Terror Twilight. But their fanbase continues to grow, thanks in part to the Spotify algorithm, which transformed ‘Harness Your Hopes’ from a Brighten the Corners outtake into the band’s most-streamed song .
Ahead of Pavement’s 2023 Australian tour, Music Feeds speaks to guitarist Scott Kannberg (aka Spiral Stairs) about getting the band back together, challenging themselves, and engaging with a new generation of fans.
Pavement – ‘Gold Soundz’
Music Feeds: Did you all stay in touch over the years and listen to each other’s new bands?
Scott Kannberg: We didn’t really talk that much but we definitely kept in touch about music and stuff. There was one show on my very first Preston School of Industry tour where we played in Chicago, and if you bought tickets to the Malkmus show, which was on the same night, you could go to my show that was later that night.
But yeah, I listened to most of his records – the first few when they came out. I did the first two Preston School records in the early 2000s and then I didn’t really do anything until 2009 when the first Spiral Stairs records came out. And then it was another seven years before I did these last three.
He’s been more consistent over the years than I have with his recording output. But I guess, as a Pavement fan, you were pretty lucky because two of the guys who wrote the music, at least you got their solo stuff.
MF: I’ve seen a few reviews of the current tour that have described the shows as more harmonious than the reunion tour in 2010. Do you feel that?
Scott: Oh, I totally feel that. It’s a much different vibe and performance. Not to say that 2010 was bad, but even though it was ten years since we had played together, it still felt kind of the same as when we were playing in the 90s. Whereas now, there’s a different vibe to it.
There’s a whole different generation of fans that we notice coming to the shows. And there’s just more of celebration, I guess. Even with us, too, as a band – we like each other, we get along, everybody’s pretty much the same personality. So it’s cool.
MF: One example of the new generation of fans is the success of ‘Harness Your Hopes’ – a B-side that became a streaming hit five years ago and then went viral on TikTok in 2020.
Scott: Yeah, it was a nice surprise. I mean, our record label definitely took advantage of that and made a big deal about it and I think that helped with the reach of the song. But it’s a good song and it opened a lot of new doors for fans.
Every time we play that song on this tour it’s insane. People are yelling out the lyrics. It’s cute.
Pavement – ‘Harness Your Hopes’
MF: I looked at a bunch of your recent setlists. You’re changing what you play every night and playing stuff from all five Pavement albums. Did you re-learn a significant portion of the catalogue?
Scott: Yeah – I think at one stage we had about sixty songs on the list. When we first started discussing it I was like, “Hey, we know we’re going to play the same kind of fifteen songs, so let’s just make another fifteen or twenty songs and keep it to that.” And then it just kept going and going and going.
Bob [Nastanovich] really kind of obsesses over the setlist. He wants to make sure that people hear songs that they’ve never heard, let’s say, in a certain city. Or maybe a fan writes to him and says, “Please play ‘Loretta’s Scars’ – you never played that in 2010.” So, Bob makes a point of it.
MF: I noticed that you’re playing fewer songs from Terror Twilight than any of the other records. Do you feel less affection for the songs on that album?
Scott: Not necessarily. We love that record. It’s just, we played those songs a lot in our very last tour in 1999, so we didn’t really play a lot of them in 2010. The thing is, the songs are good, but they’re a lot more difficult to play. We are playing probably four songs from that record, which are good, but they’re pretty hard songs to nail. I like the songs on the record, though – they’re great.
The Terror Twilight songs are all kind of jamming songs – except for, like, ‘Major Leagues’, which we’re doing. I’d like to do ‘Carrot Rope’ one day, but that song’s pretty hard too.
MF: There is a perception that the making of Terror Twilight was a tense time for Pavement. Did that have anything to do with the technical challenges posed by that material?
Scott: Yeah, maybe. One of the things we’ve really tried to do on this tour compared to us in the 90s is we really want to make sure the songs sound great. One of the reasons the songs sound great is we’re playing more parts that were on the record. Whereas, in the 90s, I think we just improvised a hell of a lot more, and if it sounded good with whatever we played on it, that’s what we did.
We really wanted to make sure these songs sounded as close to the record as possible, but being Pavement, they’re going to sound different anyway. We’re not that proficient.

Pavement have announced that some of Australia’s most exciting rock bands will join them on their upcoming tour of the country.
The US indie icons are returning to Australia next February for a run of shows. It will be their first shows Down Under since 2010. Tickets are on sale now, with just the Melbourne date sold out.
A different Australian band will join Pavement in every city. Out West, local favourites Pond will support Stephen Malkmus and co. at Perth’s Concert Hall. South Australian rockers Bad//Dreems will provide support in Adelaide, with the shows set to coincide with the release of their fourth album.
Acclaimed Melbourne indie-rock outfit Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever will journey up to Brisbane to support at Fortitude Music Hall, while punk rock band Romero will perform in Melbourne. And Melbourne four-piece Floodlights will pull double duty in Thirroul and Sydney, with their third album due sometime next year.
One of the most influential bands of the last three decades, Pavement really need no introduction. Hailed by music critic Robert Christgau as “the finest rock band of the 90s,” Pavement had one of the strongest string of albums in the 1990s: Slanted And Enchanted (1992), Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten The Corners (1997) and Terror Twilight (1999).
While the band haven’t released a studio album since 1999’s Terror Twilight , Matador released an expanded issue of that record, Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal , in April.
And it’s a good time to be catching the band live, with Pavement having recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of their seminal 1992 debut album Slanted and Enchanted .
While Down Under, Pavement will also be headlining Victoria’s new music festival Tent Pole: A Musical Jamboree. Set to take place at Geelong’s Mt Duneed Estate on Saturday, March 4th, Stephen Malkmus and co. will be accompanied by several other acclaimed bands, including Spiderbait, The Schizophonics, and CLAMM (more to be announced).

Bonza enters voluntary administration after abruptly cancelling all flights across Australia
Passengers were earlier left stranded as discussions took place on ‘viability of business’

The low-cost airline Bonza entered voluntary administration on Tuesday, after abruptly cancelling all of its flights after the repossession of its entire fleet that caught its CEO by surprise.
Passengers were left stranded at a handful of airports when Bonza “temporarily suspended” all services on Tuesday with no notice, as the airline’s owners considered the viability of the business’ future.
Bonza appointed firm Hall Chadwick for the administration process of its operating and holding company, documents filed with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (Asic) show.
Bonza’s fleet has been grounded until the end of Thursday, with the administrators advising passengers with booking not to turn up to the airport.
“Discussions are currently under way regarding the ongoing viability of the business,” Bonza’s chief executive, Tim Jordan, said in a statement.
“We apologise to our customers who are impacted by this and we’re working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian domestic aviation market.”
Bonza’s board held an emergency meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the airline’s next options.
Shortly after the cancellations were reported, the transport minister, Catherine King, said her department had contacted Bonza and that “our expectation is that they keep passengers informed of their options and their consumer rights”.
The transport department opened a hotline on Tuesday morning for stranded Bonza passengers. The hotline number is 1800 069 244.
“I have spoken to Qantas and Virgin CEOs this morning and both airlines stand ready to assist stranded passengers needing to get home,” King said. Rex also offered to help with flights from regional airports.
King, speaking later on Tuesday from Melbourne, did not answer questions about whether Bonza had asked for a government bailout, but said: “We’ll await to hear what the Bonza board is deciding.
“It’s always really tough for a new entrant … We are a small market, despite the fact we are amazing travellers and we do want to travel everywhere and all the time. But we are a small market and it is always very difficult for new entrants,” King said.

Meanwhile, aviation sources told the Guardian that Bonza’s fleet of Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft had been repossessed.
Bonza’s private equity owners, the US firm 777 Partners, had owned the airline’s fleet of Boeing 737 Max 8 planes. The parent company also part owns the Canadian low-cost carrier Flair and leases its aircraft assets between the airlines.
Flair had some of its aircraft repossessed at short notice in 2023.
Bonza had been operating two aircraft wet-leased from Flair in recent months, in addition to its fleet of four aircraft.
One of the planes Bonza had been leasing from Flair appears to have returned to the Canadian carrier and was flying routes in North America on Monday.
On 9 April, AIP Capital – an investment manager that includes aviation assets such as aircraft and which had majority owned 777 Partners’ fleet of aircraft in a 51%-49% split – announced the formation of a new holding company, Phoenix Aviation Capital.
When announcing its launch, Phoenix said it had “a definitive agreement to acquire the rights, interests and obligations of a portfolio of 30 737-8 aircraft from 777 Partners”.
In an internal note seen by Guardian Australia, Jordan acknowledged to staff that the airline’s fleet was repossessed by AIP, the effective lessor of the aircraft, on Tuesday morning.
“This was a surprise to both ourselves and 777 Partners. We are currently assessing all options and will provide an update here just as soon as we have more information available to share,” he said.
after newsletter promotion
“As a consequence of this all first wave flights from all bases have been cancelled.”
Bonza, 777 Partners and AIP Capital did not immediately respond to questions about aircraft repossessions.
Guardian Australia has previously reported that 777 Partners were being chased in court in the UK for almost US$30m (A$44.7m) in unpaid aircraft leasing fees and damages. Despite the legal issues, 777 Partners is now attempting to take over English football club Everton. The proposed takeover is awaiting approval from the English Premier League.
On Tuesday, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) was seeking an urgent meeting with Bonza to discuss the implications for workers during “this difficult and uncertain time”.
In addition to offering to fly stranded passengers for free, Qantas and Virgin offered support to Bonza aviation staff. Qantas has set up a dedicated section on Jetstar’s jobs website to recruit Bonza staff.
“This is an extremely distressing time for workers and stranded passengers. Bonza must ensure staff are prioritised and informed as this process plays out,” the TWU national secretary, Michael Kaine, said.
“Bonza and any other airline attempting to enter the Australian aviation market has little chance of survival,” he said. “Despite speculation of issues behind the scenes at Bonza, this is an industry dominated by aggressive competition and unchecked corporate greed that will squeeze out any new entrant.”
Kaine echoed his union’s calls for a broader commission into aviation to address competition, consumer and worker issues.
“Aviation is an industry on its knees,” Kaine said. “Service standards have plummeted while air fares have gone through the roof. Regional jobs and communities are now at further risk of being cut off as a more cost-effective airline struggles to stay in the air.”
Launched in January 2023 after a lengthy accreditation process during which its planes could not fly, Bonza has struggled with aircraft shortages and was forced to cancel several routes over the past year.
It has come under fire for repeatedly expanding to new routes before cutting some because of low patronage.
The airline operates out of a base at Sunshine Coast airport and was set up to primarily serve the leisure market through direct routes between regional airports.
The airline operates out of larger airports, including Melbourne’s Tullamarine and the Gold Coast.
However, it had been critical of the laws governing Sydney airport. Those laws meant Bonza struggled to gain access to takeoff and landing slots to launch services in and out of the lucrative Sydney market.
