Adults-only cruise launches on River Walk in downtown San Antonio

50-minute tours are available on select days through may.

Rebecca Salinas , Digital Journalist

SAN ANTONIO – Visitors to downtown San Antonio can now hop on an adults-only river barge that’s complete with a mariachi band.

GO RIO, the city’s river barge operator, announced this week that it has launched the Mariachi Sip & Cruise.

Recommended Videos

The cruise is for people 21 and older, and includes a tour around downtown, entertainment from Mariachi Amador, two drink tickets and a souvenir cup.

Boats depart at 7 p.m. on select dates this month and in May. The tours last 50 minutes and tickets cost $60 each.

GO RIO also announced that for the first time, it will showcase one of its boats during the Fiesta Flambeau Parade on Saturday.

“GO RIO boat captains and Girl Scouts from local troops will ride on the wheeled boat float, giving out GO RIO beads,” a news release states. “Marina, GO RIO’s lively turtle mascot, will lead the crowd in a Flambeau dance party -- be sure to be on the lookout for float #133 so you can join in!”

The Fiesta Flambeau Parade is known as America’s largest illuminated night parade with more than 200 parade entries and a typical attendance of about 750,000 spectators. It’s also broadcasted and livestreamed (on KSAT!) to about 1.5 million more people.

KSAT will broadcast a pre-party from 7-8 p.m., with parade coverage following from 8-11 p.m. The vanguard kicks off at 7:15 p.m. and the main parade starts at 7:45 p.m.

You can watch KSAT’s live coverage on KSAT 12, KSAT Plus (our free streaming app), YouTube and KSAT.com .

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

attractions elektrostal photo

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrostal attractions photo with description

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

Take A Northern Indiana Road Trip: Things To Do, Eat and See

Great adventures are often closer than you think. While a visit to Indianapolis is always a quick Cincinnati getaway, we wanted to experience what else Indiana had to offer.  A wish list that included a beach, plenty of parks and family-friendly attractions had us mapping out the perfect Northern Indiana road trip.

Our journey through northern Indiana led us through country roads, small towns, and fascinating destinations.  We were graciously hosted on this trip by the cities below, however, all opinions are my own.

Hamilton County

North of Indianapolis you will find the charming town of Carmel, Indiana. After visiting last year, there was no question that a stop here was mandatory. This ever-growing portion of Indiana is booming with new local restaurants, trendy boutiques, and plenty of family-friendly adventures. We spent two beautiful days exploring even more of what Hamilton County as to offer.

Monon Trail

Northern Indiana Road Trip

The Waterpark

One of the best ways to cool off during a hot summer day is with a visit to The Waterpark.  Relax in the lazy river,  zip down one of their many slides, or try your hand at surfing on a simulator.  Two great kid areas are bound to keep those little ones entertained. From a tame toddler pool to a more action-packed zone that is bound to burn off that pent up energy. This is the perfect addition to any summer itinerary or a great way to cool off during your trek up or down the Monon Trail.

Stuckey’s Farm Orchard and Cider Mill

Northern Indiana Road Trip

Conner Prairie

History comes to life as you step back into time with a visit to Conner Prairie. This interactive outdoor museum will take your family on an amazing journey back through time with a visit to 1836 Indiana.  Explore how times were like during the Civil War and even step into a four-story treehouse.  Encouraging guests to create is a key component of any visit. Whether you are building a windmill or learning about the effects of wind a visit to Conner Prairie is bound to be fun and educational.  We share tips and what to expect during your visit to Conner Prairie here .

Where To Stay

During our recent visit to Hamilton County, we stayed at the  Renaissance Hotel in Carmel . The central location of this hotel was ideal as everything was within a few minute’s drive.  The rooms were spacious, clean, and modern. We enjoyed many of the amenities the hotel had, but the best was the indoor pool.

Where To Eat

Tina's Tea Room

Read about our last visit to  Hamilton County  to get a few more great ideas to add to your itinerary.

Indiana Dunes

Indiana Dunes

Honestly,  we did not spend enough time at the Dunes as I only allotted only half a day to explore this natural wonder. We made it to the beach twenty minutes before the storms we were outrunning caught up. With rain in the schedule for the rest of the day, we ventured to the Nature Center then headed on to our next destination.

Don’t make the same mistake I made; plan for at least two days here if not more. The Indiana Dunes is an incredible National Park that has many great hiking trails and activities to explore. They also have a campground for those who enjoy camping.

Needless to say, now that I know this amazing beach area is roughly a four-hour drive from Cincinnati, I will be making a return trip.

Considering Visiting Chicago During Your Northern Indiana Road Trip

While we didn’t venture to Chicago this trip it is a great option after visiting the Dunes. Chicago is less than an hour away. This great city is full of family-friendly adventures. Learn more about great things to do with your family in Chicago here .

One family-friendly stop that you don’t want by-pass, but rather include in any trip to Northern Indiana is South Bend. Located only an hour east from the Indiana Dunes it is packed with unique attractions and experiences for the whole family.  We spent two nights in South Bend taking in all the sights.

Potawatomi Zoo and Park

Family attractions in South Bend Indiana

The zoo is the perfect size to explore in a morning or afternoon, which makes it great for those with a toddler in tow.  Don’t miss the huge bison, the river otters or the resident peacock parading around.  Hop aboard the train and the carousel to add even more excitement to your visit.

Studebaker  National Museum

Northern Indiana Road Trip

The museum is home to the world’s largest collection of presidential carriages, including the one Abraham Lincoln rode in on his way to Ford’s Theater the night of his assassination.  Little ones will love the Super Service Center where they can change tires, replace mufflers, and complete their tune-up checklists.

  • University of Notre Dame

Northern Indiana Road Trip

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is one of the top sights on the campus as it is home to many precious relics. The Basilica is breath-taking and resembles those found in Europe. View Columbus Tapestries hanging in the Admission Building before heading to the Snite Museum of Art.

Then take a tour of the stadium if time allows.  I’m chalking this up as my daughter’s first college visit.

The Embassy Suites is quite honestly one of the nicest places we have had the opportunity to stay at. This brand new hotel gives families space that they so desperately desire and need. With a separate living room, kitchenette and tub I couldn’t imagine a better spot to bring my family.

Breakfast is included every morning, with a custom-made omelet station and happy hour in the evenings! Let’s not forget the indoor pool that is a staple in my hotel wish list. The staff was excellent and I just can’t recommend them enough.

The Lauber in South Bend, IN

Fort Wayne: A Perfect Stop For A Northern Indiana Road Trip

We have fallen in love with this great family-oriented destination so much that we are already planning another trip back.  Fort Wayne is home to a wide variety of family-friendly attractions, parks, and restaurants.

A two-night stay is what was planned, however, we should have stayed another night with so many great activities and a fun downtown scene to explore. This is a wonderful family stop along any northern Indiana road trip.

Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo

Fort Wayne Zoo

Their interactive exhibits will leave you spellbound, while the animals often entertain their guests. The zoo is quite large, so it is best to plan ahead as you likely won’t see the whole thing in one day.

Take time to feed the goats, ride the train, and touch the stingrays.  The Indonesian Rainforest is a fascinating exhibit that is home to orangutans, a kid’s treehouse, and fun discover station.

Science Central

Family attractions in Northern Indiana

Guests of all ages enjoy a variety of exhibits that spark the imagination.  We especially love the Kids Central area which is dedicated to those 2-7 years old. A water table, age-appropriate play structure, and a nursing area can be found here. Best of all it is gated!

Older kids will be entertained with the endless hands-on science exhibits that not only teach but excite!

Promenade Park

Promenade Park Fort Wayne

Botanical Conservatory

One of our favorite places that we visited was the Botanical Conservatory. These beautiful gardens surpass expectations and make for an educational and kid-friendly visit.  A discovery center full of fun interactive toys and books greets little ones.  Each garden is full of fascinating and fun surprises. Be sure to look for signs to guide you to popular plants like the chocolate tree.

During our visit, we stayed at the newly opened Hampton Inn near the ballfield. We truly enjoyed how walkable the hotel was from so many great city sights. The waffles that we made every morning were my daughter’s favorite. The hotel is home to an amazing restaurant Burger Bar.  It gets busy, but it is busy for a reason. In the evening grab a cocktail on their rooftop bar! The hotel staff was exceptional, our room clean and beds comfy!

Northern Indiana Road Trip

The midwest is full of exciting adventures. Check out this fun 10-day Midwest Road Trip Itinerary .

Anderson/ Madison County

Home to the largest ball of paint and historic Indian Mounds, Anderson County Indiana has quite a few unique and quirky attractions worth visiting.  Just northeast of Hamilton County, Indiana this was our final stop on our northern Indiana road trip.

Where to Go

World’s largest ball of paint.

Unique Indiana Roadside Attraction

This Guinness Book of World Record attraction is open by appointment only so call before you show up. Learn more about how to visit and how you can add on another layer of history  here.

Mounds State Park

Mounds State Park

There are plenty of great chain restaurants available, however, a local told us to head over to locally-owned Bobbers which did not disappoint. Get one of their famous (fried) tenderloin sandwiches and enjoy the lakeside view. Afterward, take the time to explore the nearby park and stroll along the lake.  Save time in your busy schedule to visit Good’s Candy Shop.  Homemade ice cream, confections, and candies make this the perfect ending to your trip,

There are plenty of good hotel options in the area to choose from.  Check out the  Anderson Madison County website  for a complete listing.

Northern Indiana Road Trip Summary

Studebaker Museum in South Bend

There were a lot of stops during this road trip, which proved to wear on our daughter and us. The amount of luggage you have when traveling with a toddler is appalling, so loading, unloading every other day is exhausting. I recommend picking two cities to explore at most if you have a little one with you.

This brings me to my second point, each city has way more to discover then what we got to experience.  I could have easily spent an extra day or two at each location taking in the sights.  Get a game plan together before you visit so you don’t get overwhelmed with all the options.

northern indiana travel

Northern Indiana is the region of Indiana including 26 counties bordering parts of Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. The area is generally sub-classified into other regions. The northwest is economically and culturally intertwined with Chicago, and is considered part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The north central area is focused around South Bend, Indiana with economic connections to southwest Michigan, and is referred to as Michiana. The northeast is centered around Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The landscape is probably the flattest in the state, and is characterized physically by fairly level terrain ranging from 600 to 1,000 feet above sea level with pockets of larger, rolling hills primarily in LaPorte, Stueben, Porter, Noble County, and some certain portions of St. Joseph County. The Eastern Continental Divide goes through Northern Indiana following the top of the Valparaiso Moraine part of the way. Besides urban areas (Northwest Indiana is larger than all of Marion County) and occasional state parks and wildlife areas, much of northern Indiana is farmland.

The northwest corner of the state is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has nearly one million residents. The region is marked with swell and swale topography as it retreats south from Lake Michigan. The ecology changes dramatically between swells, or on opposite sides of the same swell. Plants and animals adapted to marshes are generally found in the swales, while forests or even prickly pear cactus are found in the dryer swells. This area is also home to the large sand dunes at Indiana Dunes National Park which features large sand dunes (i.e. Mount Baldy ~ 126 feet) with a beach view of the Chicago skyline near Lake Michigan, and several of the wetland/marsh features described earlier toward its southern boundaries. Historic towns such as a Beverly Shores occasionally dot the lakeshore, along with the remains of the once-giant steel industry near Gary.

Northern Indiana is home to many natural lakes, the vast majority of which are the remains of the glaciers that covered Indiana thousands of years ago. North central Indiana is home to several kettle-hole lakes, many of which are thousands of years old. County Parks, state parks, and Fish & Wildlife Areas in this region contain such habitats, as well as natural meadows, old-growth pine forests, wetlands, and several opportunities to view migratory birds from around the hemisphere.

Sometimes referred to as Indiana lake country, northeastern Indiana has the largest concentration of natural lakes in the state, including Lake James in Pokagon State Park, Lake Maxinkuckee, Lake Wawasee and Lake Tippecanoe. Lake Wawasee is the largest natural lake in Indiana, while Lake Tippecanoe is the deepest, reaching depths of over 120 feet (37 m). Both lakes are located in Kosciusko County. Chain O' Lakes State Park, located in Noble County, contains 11 lakes, 8 of which are connected by natural channels.

Talk [ edit ]

Northern Indiana is known in television media for having the flattest accent amongst its citizens of almost anywhere in the country. Newscasters from various US cities, in some cases, have been instructed to watch news broadcasts from South Bend or Chicago in order to try and rid them of their local dialect. As such, it is typically not difficult to understand anyone's speech from Northern Indiana who is a native to the area, though once south of US 30, one may notice a considerable difference as the North Midland accent begins to develop and continues to southern portions of the state.

Many local words are derived from Chicago slang, such as a cigarette being called a "square."

Get in [ edit ]

By car [ edit ].

The main roads are east-wests I-90/80 , which runs from Illinois to Ohio through South Bend and Elkhart , and I-69 , which runs up from Indianapolis to Michigan through Fort Wayne . Both are very convenient traveling roads throughout the region, with high 70mph speed limits, and relatively light traffic. US 31 , going north-south from Kentucky to Michigan , is roughly right up the center of the region.

By bus [ edit ]

  • Coach USA Offers shuttle service between South Bend Regional Airport, Notre Dame, Mishawaka and Chicago airports.
  • Greyhound Offers service to and from destinations around the country via Indianapolis and Chicago.
  • Several other bus lines pass through portions of Northwest Indiana on a daily basis.

By plane [ edit ]

  • Fort Wayne International Airport ( FWA  IATA ) with schedule flights from a number if US cities
  • South Bend Regional Airport ( SBN  IATA ) with schedule flights from a number if US cities
  • Elkhart Municipal Airport ( EKI  IATA ) for private aircraft

By train [ edit ]

The South Shore line runs straight to South Bend through Northwestern Indiana from downtown Chicago .

Get around [ edit ]

It's by far easiest to travel through the region by car. The aforementioned highways are the main routes, although US Hwy 33 is a very convenient way to get between Elkhart and Fort Wayne .

See [ edit ]

Northern Indiana is very rural, and is worth exploring, if only to see the natural beauty of the state. Many lakes and small waterways contribute greatly to the natural beauty of the region.

Black Pine Animal Park in Albion near Syracuse is an animal sanctuary that takes in rescued and retired animals. Their tours offer a chance for you to touch, experience, and observe these animals up close and personal. Big cats, primates, bears, camels, birds, snakes and more.

The Gene Stratton-Porter Cabin State Historic Site in Rome City near Auburn honors one of Indiana's most famous authors, she wrote such works as Freckles and A Girl of Limberlost . She was also one of the world's first and best nature photographers.

There are quite a few museums , many of them historical, in the region. Among these are the Fulton County Museum (dedicated to the history of northern Indiana, especially Fulton County), the Auburn Cord Dusenberg Museum (one of the biggest car museums in America), and the IUSB Art Gallery.

Do [ edit ]

Eat [ edit ].

There's a wide variety of food to choose from, ranging from the (Rochester) Streamliner's breaded tenderloin that was ranked one of the best in the state to the South Bend Chocolate Company's chocolate-covered anything (even spoons!) to the national chains like Pizza Hut and Subway.

Drink [ edit ]

Stay safe [ edit ].

While rural northern Indiana is among the safest places to live and travel (in fact, many residents leave their cars unlocked without a worry), basic precautions are advised, especially in population centers like South Bend and Fort Wayne.

The weather can be quite extreme, but the threats from this are usually minor. Tornadoes, blizzards, and flooding are the more common serious issues, but they're generally few and far between. The locals actually have a saying about how changeable the weather is: "If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes". While this is obviously an exaggeration, it really feels like it's true sometimes.

Go next [ edit ]

  • Northwest Indiana : Many of the steel mills of the industrial revolution that made Gary and the surrounding area so powerful still stand today.
  • Chicago : The third-largest city in the United States is just on the other side of northwest Indiana.
  • Central Indiana : Many locations that are popular both with locals and international travelers are located in central Indiana, including Purdue University, Turkey Run State Park, and the birthplace of the Wright brothers.
  • Northwest Ohio : A section of Ohio that houses, among other places, Cedar Point , Toledo and Lima .
  • Southeast Michigan and West Michigan : Home to Detroit most famously, but also Battle Creek , Grand Rapids , and Kalamazoo .

Climb High, Dive Deep – Lake Michigan

Northern Indiana meets Lake Michigan in a sun-kissed landscape of undulating sand dunes and glorious blue waters, both seeming to go on forever.  Michigan City serves as the unofficial gateway to The Indiana Dunes National Park, which stretches across a three-county region. The Indiana Dunes State Park in Porter is a great place to get advice on a host of adventures.

Indiana Dunes National Park and State Park 10

Up for a test of your outdoor strength? Take “ The 3 Dune Challenge ,” a tough trek running or hiking a 1.5-mile course on the State Park’s three tallest dunes. Most climbers find the steep, sandy slopes take them backwards as often as forward. But there are plenty of gentle hiking options too among the dunes, with 16 miles of hiking trails in the State Park alone.  The Diana of the Dunes Dare is the newest challenge in the National Park.

The Beaches

Washington Park in Michigan City reigns as the Grand Dame of the shore. You can easily spend a whole day swimming, sunning and playing on the expansive beach, picnicking in the shady park, seeing Indiana’s only working lighthouse, and visiting all those wonderful creatures right next door at the Washington Park Zoo . To the west, dog-friendly Central Beach offers a quieter experience, and Mt. Baldy Beach is backed by the National Park’s largest moving dune.  Gary’s Miller Beach neighborhood is the secret little beach town where the Indiana Dunes National Park begins and  Marquette Park has been recently restored and offers a great view of Lake Michigan.

charter fishing

Every angler on earth dreams of reeling in a prize catch, and the waters of Lake Michigan offer some of the best Coho and Chinook salmon fishing around. Northern Indiana’s Heritage Trail

  • April 10, 2019

Named one of America’s “Most Scenic Drives,” the Heritage Trail, in northern Indiana, takes you on a 90-mile journey through the rolling farmland around Nappanee, Wakarusa, Middlebury, and Shipshewana.

When you plan your Heritage Trail experience, make time to enjoy stops along the way. Amish artisans are all around you and eager to demonstrate their craft. Furniture- makers apply time-honored techniques to piece together tables, chairs, and cabinets of stunning beauty and ingenuity in design.

From baskets, quilts, and blankets to noodles, pies, and breads, Amish Country artisans blend tradition with the present.

Take a walk or ride your bike along the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail and you’re likely to bump into Amish families going to work, heading to town to shop, or just enjoying the scenic beauty of this rails-to-trails path. Like the Heritage Trail, the Pumpkinvine connects community, building on the creative energy of all.

JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY

The Heritage Trail also connects to the larger, more urban communities of Goshen, Elkhart and Bristol. This is where worlds collide and artisans put their heart and soul behind fine art, jewelry, functional pottery, exquisitely crafted soaps, and, yes, even one-of-a-kind hand- built motorcycles.

Goshen buzzes with a college town vibe and is a great place to soak in the vivid artistry. Local bartenders mix hand-crafted cocktails, while craft brewmasters concoct heady hops. The walkable downtown boasts a trendy record store that also serves as a venue for touring indie bands. Boutiques blend seamlessly with antique shops, and restaurants serve cuisine from around the globe. The past meets present at the Millrace Farmers Market and neighborhoods along a trail line a one-time hydraulic canal.

Elkhart puts its stamp on its unique take on an urban center. Shows at the Lerner Theatre, a glittering restored movie palace, burst with the creative energy of young talent. Art galleries blending modern interpretations and timeless classics are the ideal complement to an eclectic array of restaurants, eateries and museums. The city always seems to be in motion and that’s most apparent at a world- class aquatics center rising as the centerpiece of the growing River District.

MAKE MEMORIES HERE

northern indiana travel

Look around a little and you can’t help but notice the Heritage Trail is rich with awe-inspiring scenery.

Waterways snake through unspoiled farmland, urban vistas, and woodlands. Fishing or kayaking along the St. Joe River in Bristol or just waiting to capture the perfect photo—it’s your choice of adventure.

For iconic sights, the only place to start is the historic barns, mills, and factories that symbolize the power of innovation and entrepreneurship. The story of Elkhart County is told in those places and in the mansions and stately neighborhoods that speak to prosperity through the work of making things by hand.

Indiana Amish Country Embodied in Nappanee

Start your excursion in Nappanee . “Embrace the Pace” is the motto of this little city with its cozy downtown of 19 th century storefronts. A stop at the Nappanee Center reveals the town’s colorful past and profiles its native sons and daughters from celebrated cartoonists to generations of cabinet makers.

Das Dutchman Essenhaus in Northern Indiana Amish Country

Nappanee’s cabinet making story is told in nearby Coppes Commons. The building once housed Coppes Cabinets, makers of the famous Napanee Dutch Kitchenette or “Hoosier” cabinet. Today this renovated factory is now a marketplace for things hand-crafted and freshly made. Take in the fascinating history of Coppes while sampling the wares of marketplace vendors such as creative ice cream concoctions (flash frozen using liquid nitrogen) at Rocket Science Ice Cream or made-from-scratch whoopee pies from the Nappanee Bakery & Treat Shoppe.

Probably the area’s best-known tourist attraction in Indiana Amish Country, The Barns at Nappanee, Home of Amish Acres Nappanee serves up a full plate of sightseeing, shopping and dining, with a nighttime theater performance to top it all off. The Amish Inn provides overnight accommodations in 62 guest rooms and also offers three meetings rooms.

A well-preserved, 140-year-old farm started by the first Amish family to settle in Indiana is the centerpiece of The Barns at Nappanee. In addition to original buildings, 18 relocated and restored structures surround the farm’s pond, such as a blacksmith shop, ice shop and mint mill (for pressing leaves into mint oil). Guided tours of the 80-acre working farm include walking across the oak floorboards of the main house. Buggy and wagon rides are available, too. Guests will see antique farm equipment, an apple orchard, horses in paddocks, barnyard chickens and geese, even a llama. Craft demonstrations include lye soap and broom making, rug weaving and quilting, plus seasonal activities like maple syrup, cider, apple butter and sorghum molasses making. Documentary films discuss Amish history and customs.

Amish Acres in Northern Indiana Amish Country

Amish Acres

Plain and Fancy , the 1955 Broadway musical comedy about Amish life and love, is a permanent fixture in the 400-seat Round Barn Theatre. The resident repertory theater company has also produced such recent works as Hello Dolly! and Ring of Fire (the songs of Johnny Cash), among other shows. The performance space is a 1911 barn that was moved from a nearby farm.

A highlight for many at The Barns at Nappanee is an all-you-can-eat meal under the hand-hewn timbers of a cavernous, century-old barn. The family-style Threshers Dinner features fried chicken, ham and roast beef, plus thick ham and bean soup, hearth-baked bread with apple butter, mashed potatoes, giblet gravy, sage dressing, beef and noodles, and sweet and sour cabbage salad. Save room for shoofly pie. Other tempting pie choices: chocolate, pecan, blueberry, peanut butter and coconut cream. And bring something home from the restaurant’s bakery, like cinnamon rolls or whoopie pies. (800-800-4942,  thebarnsatnappanee.com )

Crafts and Dining in Indiana Amish Country

Shopping at Shipshewana Flea Market in Northern Indiana Amish Country

Bargain hungry shoppers head northeast of Nappanee to Shipshewana for the Shipshewana Flea Market . Tuesdays and Wednesdays, May through September, avid deal seekers cruise row after row of vendors offering a variety of goods ranging from purses and wallets to tools and housewares. Fall is the perfect time to browse the flea market; the crowds have diminished and there are bargains aplenty. An added bonus, motorcoach drop off is at the front gate and parking is ample. For antique lovers or just the curious, the antique auction held each Wednesday on the flea market grounds offers plenty of action and lively bidding.

Just a few miles west of Shipshewana, Das Dutchman Essenhaus in Middlebury is the place to go in Indiana Amish Country when it’s time to relax and chat over a good meal. This friendly, family-owned restaurant is renowned for its family-style dining featuring platters piled high with chicken and roast beef, bowls of noodles, mashed potatoes and vegetables, fresh-from-the-oven rolls, and flaky-crusted pie in more than 30 varieties. It’s all welcome fare on a brisk fall day.

Das Dutchman Essenhaus

After dinner, the Essenhaus Village Shops invite browsing a gamut of goods from quilts to fashionable clothing and home décor. And each Thursday night, May through September, their Classic Car Cruise-In with live entertainment and door prizes offers nostalgic fun. Spend the night at the welcoming Essenhaus Inn & Conference Center with its tasteful country décor, generously sized rooms, indoor pool and lovely views.

A barn-shaped museum in Shipshewana, Menno-Hof brings to life the story of the Amish and Mennonite people of Northern Indiana, starting with Anabaptist movements in 16th century Switzerland. The Anabaptists were persecuted by Catholic and Protestant authorities for their belief in voluntary adult baptisms at a time when the state allowed only infant baptism.

Exhibits on the guided tour include a dungeon where Anabaptists were tortured and a 17th century ship they took on their journey to America and freedom. Visitors learn the differences between Mennonites and Amish, and also about the Hutterites, a communal Anabaptist group that survives today in Canada, the United States and Japan. You learn that today’s Mennonites drive cars and dress and live much like their neighbors. The Amish, meanwhile, have resisted most modern conveniences.

Menno-Hof in Northern Indiana Amish Country

The Tornado Theatre at Menno-Hof replicates the power of a tornado and explains how Amish and Mennonite crews respond to cleanup efforts following disasters. The Mennonite Church, with more than a million members in 66 countries, is known for its relief projects, commitment to world peace and the principle of non-resistance. More than half of its members are non-white. The name Mennonite comes from Menno Simons, a Dutch priest who joined the Anabaptist movement in 1536 and became its most influential leader. (260-768-4117, mennohof.org )

The Center of Amish Country

Of course, any trip to Indiana Amish Country calls for a stroll down a city Main Street. Historic downtown Goshen , positioned at the center of Amish Country, is laced with eclectic shops, specialty boutiques, galleries and eateries. Drop into the early 1900s-era Olympia Candy Kitchen for hand-dipped chocolates, which have been served at presidential inaugurals. Get a true taste of fall at Kercher’s Sunrise Orchard, located a few miles south of downtown Goshen, which is the largest apple orchard in the state of Indiana. Board a hay wagon and ride into the orchard with an expert guide who tells all about different types of apples and what it takes to plant and grow the trees. Sunrise Orchard also produces some of Indiana’s best apple cider, and it’s interesting to watch the process. Sampling is encouraged!

Bristol Harnesses Tools of the Past

Perhaps the most photographed building in Elkhart County, the red-painted Bonneyville Mill is Indiana’s oldest continuously operating grist mill. Dating back to the 1830s, it still grinds flour the old-fashioned way by harnessing the power of water.

Bonneyville Mill in Northern Indiana Amish Country

Located on the Little Elkhart River in Bonneyville Mill County Park in Bristol, the mill sells bags of stone-ground corn, wheat, rye and buckwheat flour. Tours explain the milling process. The mill is open from mid-April through mid-November. Nearby is the Bonneyville Mill Dahlia Garden, another photo-worthy subject. The best viewing time is mid-August to mid-September.

The county park has miles of woodland trails and picnic areas, including five reservable shelters. (574-535-6458, elkhartcountyparks.org )

Historic Home Tour

Overlooking the St. Joseph River in Elkhart, Ruthmere is a 1908 Beaux-Arts-style mansion provides a peek into the Gilded Age. The elegant home of Albert and Elizabeth Beardsley, once the centerpiece of Elkhart society, was named after their only child, who died in infancy. Albert Beardsley made his fortune as general manager of the company that became Miles Laboratories, known for over-the-counter products like Alka-Seltzer, One-A-Day Vitamins and Bactine.

Ruthmere Campus

Cuban mahogany paneling, Italian marble fireplaces, wall and ceiling murals, gilded woodwork and exquisite plasterwork reflect the home’s sumptuousness. Music from the Choralcelo, a combination player piano/organ in the front parlor, is piped into the library. Also a museum of antiques, decorative art and fine art, Ruthmere counts a Rodin sculpture and Tiffany lamps among its prized possessions. The grand piano in the game room is a 1951 Steinway that was a practice piano for Arthur Rubinstein (not owned by the Beardsley family).

The garage in back, built with a turntable, houses vintage automobiles—a 1912 Pratt, 1917 Cadillac and 1916 Milburn Electric Car. On the grounds is one of the 18 gardens featured on the area’s Quilt Garden Tour .

For groups, Ruthmere can arrange a lunch or coffee on the terrace, or piazza. The plush game room, decorated with leather and red velvet, can also accommodate group meals. (888-287-7696, ruthmere.org )

A hometown heritage that blends history with natural beauty. Eat authentic at Chicago’s Downtown Eatery with a taste of the Windy City’s famous Chicago-style hot dogs or pack their “Kitchen Sink” pizza and go for a picnic at Cummins Park.

A cultural cornerstone with a vibrant, diverse, and unique community. Eat at a downtown bistro, The Vine, where you can savor a bottle of wine as city life bustles around you. Savor plated perfection at Artisan, a AAA Four Diamond and Wine Spectator Award of Excellence winner, or sip some suds at...

Americana with a twist…this city is a magnet for creative young entrepreneurs where innovation meets craftsmanship. This central stop along the Heritage Trail is a magnet for creative young entrepreneurs and filled with eclectic shops, specialty boutiques, cozy cafes, and lively entertainment.

An authentic community united by culture and heritage. Eat at the largest restaurant in Indiana, Das Dutchman Essenhaus, serving authentic Amish-style recipes. Discover why locals love the home-style American classics served in a family-friendly dinner at the Village Inn Restaurant.

Embrace the pace of the city that gives you a warm hometown feeling and invites you to come back again. Eat family-style passing piping-hot platters at Amish Acres. Savor smoked cheddar and pulled pork courtesy of Culinary Mill or indulge in out-of-this-world creamy ice cream at Rocket Science Ice...

Shipshewana

Amish life blends seamlessly with this small town’s modern day mix of commerce and community. Eat slowly and savor roast beef and delicious fried chicken served family-style in the home-like surroundings of the Blue Gate Restaurant. Locals love the palate-pleasing treats at Yoder’s Meat and Cheese...

With a single stoplight surrounded by century-old buildings, friendly shops and tree-lined sidewalks. Eat Stan Cook’s sausage Stromboli served counter-side at Cook’s Pizza.
