To get to Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), you'll need to either drive or take a seasonal shuttle bus from a neighbouring town, as there is limited public transportation into the park. 

The closest airport to the park is Denver International Airport (DIA) which is approximately 97 kilometres (60 miles) from the park.

The closest towns to RMNP are Estes Park to the east and Grand Lake to the west. There are highways that connect both towns to the park, however, winter weather may affect the roads, so it's always wise to check before you drive.  

How do I get around Rocky Mountain National Park?

Most people get around Rocky Mountain National Park with private or group vehicles as entrances to certain hiking trails are most accessible by car.

There are shuttle services within the park that operate from May to October within the Bear Lake corridor area. There are also seasonal buses that operate in and out of Estes Park. 

Cycling is also allowed within the park, but check to see where your bike can go before heading out.

Encompassing over 415-square miles, the glorious natural wonder is replete with breathtaking vistas, wildlife, wildflowers, and scenery beyond belief. This alpine region beckons visitors from around the world. Thousands visit the National Park annually to enjoy the bounty of activities and beauty this famous landmark offers. Our time was limited so in order to get the most from the experience we enlisted Green Jeep Tours and enjoyed a windblown, outdoor, up-close view on their Rocky Mountain Safari Tour.

Rocky Mountain Safari Tour

When I began my research, I knew we’d only be in Estes Park for the day so rather than spending time trying to take in the scenery on our own, I looked for a tour that would offer us the opportunity to view Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado and still leave time for experiencing the town of Estes Park. My research led me to Green Jeep Tours and their Rocky Mountain Safari Tour.

Located on Moraine Avenue in Estes Park, Green Jeep Tours offers custom jeep tours of Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park. The most popular tour they offer, the Safari Tour, lasts slightly over three hours and gives a comprehensive overview of the park, the wildlife, and scenery. The jeep is the preeminent tour vehicle because it offers panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains and a knowledgeable guide to provide facts and details along the road. 

We checked-in at the Green Jeep office in Estes Park twenty minutes before our scheduled departure and waited in the lot behind the building to get our jeep assignment. Our guide, Pete, introduced himself and we climbed aboard and buckled up. The open-air jeep has a removable roof and sides providing the most unique encounter with the stunning region. 

The jeep holds up to eight people so for our tour my husband, son, and I shared the vehicle with a lovely family of four from Texas. My husband and son had the rear seats which if you’re a bit skittish, I don’t recommend. I was happy to be on the inside although, the pictures my husband was able to take from his vantage were superb.

We made our way through town and to Rocky Mountain National Park where our guide checked in at the gate. It was here we received a map of Rocky Mountain National Park as well as a pass (included with the tour price) for re-entry throughout the day. Once through the gate, we entered the mountaintop wonderland.

Touring Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado

Inside Rocky Mountain National Park, we traveled a short distance before making one of several stops. Our first point of interest was at a magnificent waterfall. In addition to the dazzling waterfall, our guide Pete pointed out the towering ponderosa pine trees as well as scars on the aspen trees which is a tell-tale sign elk have visited and rubbed their antlers on the trunks. Pete’s narration added to our experience and was extremely informative. 

Moving on, we journeyed along Old Fall River Road. The one-way dirt road is only open from early July through September and is a craggy trail of switchback turns and sensational mountain views. We saw many tourists making the trek in their own vehicles, but personally, I was happy to let the sturdy green jeep do the driving. This rugged road is not for the faint of heart.

Leaving the dirt road, we connected with the better-traveled and paved Trail Ridge Road. The renowned artery traveling through the park winds past the Alpine Visitor Center, climbing high above the treeline to heights of up to 12,000 feet above sea level. Along the way, we made multiple stops to explore, experience, and appreciate the views.

The Animals in Rocky Mountain National Park

One of the most awesome aspects of touring Rocky Mountain National Park is seeing the native wildlife. We saw longhorn sheep, elk, and deer. Because it was summer we had the added treat of viewing marmots high above the treeline sunning themselves on rocks. There were also adorable, tiny, but swift, pika scurrying about, moving too quickly for me to capture a picture. These moments were incredible. A pair of binoculars would have come in handy for viewing these splendid creatures in their habitat, so I vow next time, I’ll be better prepared.

Rocky Mountain National Park Weather

In a word, Rocky Mountain weather is extreme . Temperatures can change swiftly and are shaped by elevation, exposure, and slope. Temps are milder below 9,400 feet but at higher elevations, it’s possible to see snow in July. We did see snow on the ground at high elevations but the sun was shining. 

Green Jeep Tours run rain or shine year-round. With that in mind, you’re likely to experience multiple seasons during your tour regardless of the time of year. We were visiting in mid-July. When our tour began it was morning and still a little cool in Estes Park. The temperature rose to the mid-80s. However, when we reached high altitudes the temperature dipped significantly. I recommend wearing jeans or long pants, a jacket, a hat, and plenty of sunblock. 

In cooler months or during rainy weather, the temperature in the park can be cold. Also, keep in mind despite the removable sides and roof, it’s still a jeep and dress accordingly. 

Afternoon thunderstorms are common in Rocky Mountain National Park during the summer months, be prepared!

Tips For Taking a Jeep Tour of Rocky Mountain National Park

If you’re considering Green Jeep Tours, I suggest booking online or by phone prior to your visit. The Safari Tour is extremely popular and there’s always the possibility the tour will sell out. Another recommendation is to take a morning tour. The tour lasts between three and three and a half hours and departs promptly at 9:30. The potential of spotting wildlife is greater in the morning and it’s also much easier finding parking in Estes Park earlier in the day.

Additionally, when your morning tour finishes, you’re within walking distance of several popular Estes Park restaurants and eateries in time for lunch. You’ll also have the entire afternoon for exploring the charming downtown area and can even visit the iconic Stanley Hotel made famous by the films The Shining and Dumb and Dumber.

If you opt to stay in Estes Park, there’s a myriad of hotels, inns, and cabin rentals to choose from but keep in mind the summer season is busy. We stayed in Fort Collins which is approximately 45-miles away and an hour drive from Estes Park. By making Fort Collins our hub, we were able to enjoy a day trip to Estes Park and spend time visiting sites in Fort Collins including Colorado State University, the historic downtown area, and the popular New Belgium Brewing Company.

Parting Thoughts

Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado was dedicated to a National Park in 1915. Long before it became a National Park, it was a natural wonder to behold. From its rich history, its native wildlife, to its iconic snowcapped peaks, this is a one-of-a-kind destination worthy of investigating. I’m thrilled we were able to explore and encounter its beauty in such an extraordinary way. Our Green Jeep Tour allowed us to immerse ourselves and our senses in the mountains for a short time. Our takeaway was a memorable adventure, a feeling of wonder, and a defining moment in our family story. After all, isn’t it the mental pictures that last the longest?

We loved this tour! We are from out of town and wanted to be able to see as much of the mountains and Estes Park as we could in the short time we were visiting. Our tour guide was Dan. He was very knowledgeable and so sweet. He drove very safely and definitely made us feel at ease when navigating the turns around the mountain at high altitudes. We got up to 12,500 feet and took the 4:30/5 pm tour so that we could see sunset. I definitely recommend bringing a jacket if you dress warmly because the higher you climb on the tour the colder it gets. The wind was what was really chilly at the top of the mountain once we stopped to watch the sunset. At the highest altitude when we stopped for sunset it was 53 degrees but the wind made it feel much colder. (We took this tour in the last week of September) I also recommend bringing your own water, you can leave it in the jeep when the group ventures out on a trail. We saw bighorn sheep, elk and Pikas once we reached the top of the park at the highest elevation. Dan let us all stop to take pictures and pulled off to the side of the road to let us have time to take photos and watch the sun fully set over the mountains. I would highly recommend this tour! Dan showed us beautiful views, some small trails, waterfalls, wildlife, photo ops and the park's history all in 3 hours. We will definitely be back :)

2:00 PM tour on 3/29/24. We were two groups of three. Our driver was Dan, very knowledgeable guide. The tour started out great, we made it to the turn around point and started heading back to the valley and then Bear Lake. We saw mule deer on the side of the road. So our tour guide pulled off to the side of the road so we could get some pictures. The turnout was not level and the jeep was leaning significantly. As we started to pull out of the turnout, we saw elk to the right. Which for whatever reason Dan steered right into a snow patch. As we were trying to leave after the elk sighting, we were now leaning even more and Dan was spinning the wheels in the snow. We asked Dan to stop the jeep so we could get out while he got the jeep out of the snow. As Dan tried to get out of the snow, the jeep kept sliding right until a tree stopped before tipping over. Dan then tells us we are stuck until a tow truck comes or another jeep arrives. As we are waiting for help, we notice the jeep tires are bald.We are now standing on the side of the road in a light snow and 33 degrees. Approximately 1 hour later, the owner Nicole shows up with another jeep. She tells Dan to take us in the new jeep and continue the tour. As a group of 6, we decided to proceed to Bear Lake and then head back to Estes Park. As we are driving to Bear Lake, Dan's driving becomes very erratic and unsafe. The roads at this time are very wet and even icy in parts. We snow shoe Bear Lake, great sight. Dan receives a phone call from the owner, Nicole, saying not to answer any calls from the park rangers. We heard this as Dan was on speaker phone. As we are driving down the mountain, a US Park Ranger pulls the jeep over at tuxedo turnout. The park ranger is talking to Dan, but we can hear everything as we are sitting in the back of the jeep. Dan was informed hitting the tree was considered a motor vehicle accident and he left the scene. The ranger also told Dan the tires were unsafe in any weather condition. The ranger inspects our jeep and realizes we do not have a front license plate, we have two rear license plates, one from OK and one from CO. The ranger now asks for registration and insurance from Dan, but there is none in the glove box. The ranger then types in the CO plates and realizes it doesn't even match this vehicle. The ranger proceeds to remove the two plates. At that time, we are informed by the ranger that the jeep is going to be impounded. The ranger informs Dan that there are approximately 5-7 citations going to be issued. Again, the owner, Nicole, shows up with a friend to take us back to our vehicles. But before we can leave, Nicole proceeds to argue with the rangers. We have now been sitting on the side of the road for the second time and another 45 minutes in 33 degree weather. The owner, Nicole, takes Dan and the other three person group back to town in her car. My family rode with the owners friend. We are talking with our driver as we are heading back to Estes Park. She makes a weird comment as to the bald tires on the jeep that got stuck. She said she informed someone as to that jeep was unsafe to use. As we (both families) are waiting to talk to Nicole about the last four 4 1/2 hours, she just sits in her car. Finally, my wife knocks on the car asking for her to come speak with us. The owner states she didn't know we were waiting to speak to her. We confront the owner about a refund, and the safety of our tour. No insurance on the vehicle, what if someone worse would have happened? The owner refunded our money, but did not take responsibility about any of the issues that day. In my opinion, you would think the business would fix the issues before continuing on with yours. My family was in Estes Park the next day, so we happened to drive by the facility and noticed they were conducting business as usual. Avoid this business as safety is not important and the owner doesn't care about anything but money! I left out a lot of details, but again don't go to this company! What a sham and scam of a business!

Our family's time on this tour was amazing. Butch was our tour guide and did an incredible job not only giving information but took the time to tell personal stories about people and places on the tour. He made it very personable and was great with our kids. When you do this tour ask for Butch. I highly recommend and you won't be disappointed‼

On 9/15/23, 4 of us took The Rocky Mountain Safari tour. Pete was our guide. There were 8 of us total on the tour and 2 of us were scared of heights. Pete was fun, informative, and very sensitive to the fear factor. He did everything he could to make us feel comfortable. We stopped and hiked down to a waterfall and some of us were slower than others, but he made sure everyone who wanted to hike down was able to do so. The weather wasn't as cooperative as Pete would've liked-lots of clouds and colder temps, but we had a blast. He did his best to scout out wildlife for us and answer any of our questions. I was very apprehensive about the tour, but I had a great time and would do it again in a heartbeat.

This is an excellent tour. Craig was an informative guide and brought our small group to several sites in the park. We saw things that we would have missed if we simply drove into the park. I highly recommend the tour.

We had a wonderful time on our tour with Green Jeep. It was a little cold but the sun was out so we opted to leave the top off and the the sides down. They provided blankets, which came in handy, and offered us hot chocolate. The scenery was amazing! Our guide Craig was great. We loved the local stories and his knowledge about wildlife in the park. We were a group of five so it was like a private tour. Craig asked us if we wanted to see this or that, if we wanted to hike, sled, etc. and adjusted his time to what we wanted to do/see. I would strongly recommend to anyone visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park.

Awesome adventure with Dan. A great mix of educational info and time to enjoy on your own. Even with young kids and some cold and rainy weather, we had a great time. Such a great way to see the park, especially if you're only going for the day.

Green Jeep tours were recommended to us and was a great way to get a feel for RMNP and Estes. Our driver, Greg was knowledgeable and made the experience fun. About 3 hours and well worth the time. Also gave us a great restaurant suggestion, Bird & Jim. We ate lunch there after our tour and it was outstanding. Highly recommend.

Rocky Mountain National Park.

Fritz was our driver and he was right up our alley - funny and easy to get along with! We did the off road tour... literally a 4x4 trail in Allenspark. This isn't one for people looking to see herds of elk or get a tour of RMNP. What you do see are wonderful views of Meeker and Longs Peak, and glorious shots of aspen trees without all the traffic. We had a wonderful experience and the only casualty we had was Fritz's green step stool!

We had a really good time today with Pete. We wanted to try to see some wildlife and we knew if we just tried to hike that it may be hit or miss. So we decided to do a tour today and then try to hike a shorter distance tomorrow near Pete's recommendations. Pete was very patient, explained the road systems as bit of History of the park. We did see quite a few elk today along with Marmot. We also walked a short bit of time to see some beautiful waterfalls. Follow directions and bring coats, even if it's July as the top of the mountain is dang cold and still has snow! They bring water and granola bars on the 3 hour if needed. He spent a bit of time also explaining the flowers (as I was interested) as well as gave us some good advice on what restaurants and such to see in town. Definitely a good 3 hours spent. Total cost for private tour was $500.

Here’s a complete list of guided tours inside Rocky Mountain National Park.

Rocky Mountain Conservancy is a non-profit partnering with the National Park Service & Rocky Mountain National Park, offering educational adventures by bus.  No tours during Summer 2022 have been announced, but expect tours to resume in Fall.  In past years, tours have included:

A traveler’s tip:   take the RMC Journey to the Top! – A Trail Ridge Road Bus Adventure.   Enjoy the iother-worldly Continental Divide views along America’s highest continuous paved highway, and relax in a comfortable, climate controlled bus while someone else does the driving.

Additional Routes:    Grand Lake Safari , Sunset Safari , Elk Expeditions ( Sept- Oct ),  From Meadow to Treeline, Peak to Peak – Historical Hwy 7, East Across the Divide.

Summer tours normally start in June and run through early September.  Wildlife Watching tours start in September and run through mid-October.   Call 970-586-3262 to register for Bus Tours or Educational Seminars.  Entrance into the Park is included in the registration fee.

• Peak to Peak: Historical Hwy 7 Adventure – Cultural history and signficant landmarks on the Peak to Peak Byway.
• Journey to the Top – along Trail Ridge Road, the nation’s highest continuous paved highway.
• Grand Lake Safari – a unique overview of the park’s history, flora, fauna, & geology as you cross the Continental Divide to the west side of the Park.
• Sunset Safari – discuss geology, flora, fauna and the cultural history of Rocky over Trail Ridge Road during the calmness of dusk.
• East Across the Divide: A Trail Ridge Road Bus Adventure – starts in Grand Lake.
• Elk Exhibitions (mid-Sept through mid-Oct) – View the fall elk rut with a professional guide to interpret activity and answer questions.
