Thornybush Game Lodge is located on the top end of the Thornybush Private Game Reserve, bordering the western part of Kruger National Park. This lodge in Kruger has been recently renovated, overlooks the sandy riverbed, and still retains all its safari charm.

The lodge has 16 Luxury Suites, all of them private, with huge sliding doors opening to your private deck overlooking the riverbed. They all have indoor and outdoor showers and a bathtub.

If you visit with family or a group of friends, Kamara House is just for you (opens in May 2023). Kamara House has its own game vehicle, guide, and tracker. Plus the rim-flow plunge pool! Everything you need is right there, but if you want to join other guests, you are only a five-minute walk to the main lodge where you can enjoy a drink at the bar.

The lodge has been declared plastic free and is run on solar.

3 – Singita Boulders Lodge

Singita Sabi Sand is an untouched wilderness of 45,000 acres, known for the incredible leopard sightings and amazing game viewing, either from a game drive safari truck or on foot during a guided bush walk. Enjoy the incredible birdlife of Kruger with your own guide.

Singita Boulders Lodge has been tastefully designed, incorporating boulders and other natural materials from the area. It offers 8 River suites along the river, 2 Bush suites overlooking a small waterhole, and two Family suites. All with their private plunge pool.

4 – The Outpost Lodge

The Outpost Lodge is located in the north tip of Kruger, a few miles from Pafuri Gate and Punda Maria rest camp . This area of the park is very rich in birdlife and is a top destination for birders.

One of the highlights of this lodge in Kruger Park is the retractable, remote-controlled screens offering 180º of uninterrupted and spectacular views. The first thing you’ll do when you wake up is to open the screens to watch the sunrise from your bed just before your early morning game drive.

5 – Rhino Post Safari Lodge

Rhino Post Safari Lodge is located on the Mutlumuvi River in a private concession, just a 30-minutes drive from Skukuza airport. This strategic location, the waterhole in front of the lodge, and the night drives from the lodge make the Rhino Post Safari Lodge ideal for a Kruger safari experience.

The lodge was built with great consideration for the natural environment and the ecosystem, and no concrete was used. The environmental impact of the lodge is kept to a minimum with different approaches such as their special indigenous Reedbed System that processes the bathroom waste, and their battery-powered lighting.

Get closer to nature and sleep out in one of their raised decks with tents. Enjoy a meal cooked over an open fire whilst animals come to drink at the waterhole in front of the decks. Fall asleep to Kruger’s nocturnal sounds.

Set in 15,000 acres of wilderness, Jock Saf a ri Lodge is a legendary lodge. Located on the southern tip of Kruger National Park, it is one of the oldest lodges in Kruger. Its location at the confluence of the rivers Biyamiti and Mitomeni makes it ideal for wildlife watching as animals use the riverbed to travel. 7 – Pafuri Tented Camp

Pafuri Tented Camp on the north tip of Kruger overlooks the Luvuvhu River. Its 19 luxury tents are built on raised walkways to respect the land.

Each of the tents has en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers. But the highlight is for sure the view of the river.

The richness of birdlife in the north part of Kruger makes Pafuri Tented Camp a perfect base for birdwatching activities. One of the highlights will be finding the elusive Pel’s Owl, one of the most secretive owls of South Africa . We were lucky to spot one in this area during one of our trips!

8 – Lukimbi Safari Lodge

Located in a private concession in the south of Kruger, Lukimbi Safari Lodge enjoys 37,000 acres of exclusive wilderness.

Lukimbi offers 16 large, open-plan suites (14 classic / 2 premier), each with an indoor and outdoor shower and a bathtub. A private deck offers incredible views of the wilderness surrounding the lodge. The lodge was built in front of a naturally fed spring with views along the Lawkahle river. Both types of suites can be converted to accommodate families. One of the suites has been adapted for wheelchair users.

The suites are connected to the main lodge via raised wooden walkways, ensuring minimal disturbance to the land and providing a feeling of canopy living.

Saseka Tented Camp is located at the top end of the Thornybush Private Game Reserve, bordering the western part of Kruger National Park. Saseka means ‘beautiful’ in the local Tsonga language and once you arrive at the Tented Camp you’ll see why.

These are not your usual safari canvas tents. These are ultra-luxury tented accommodations with glass walls for maximum light and to provide incredible views.

Each of the 9 luxury tents has elevated views of the riverbed, its own outside shower, pool, and private deck.

We built Jabulani on the foundation of rescuing and reintroducing orphaned elephants to new herds. This can be tricky, as elephants decide whether they accept a new elephant to their herd. However, over the past 20 years, we’ve successfully reintroduced orphaned elephants into new herds.

Everything we do and build is centred around leaving a light ecological footprint and making a difference. This includes our eco-friendly lodge design, bana grass plantation project, elephant dung eco-projects, water conservation, recycling, and wildlife conservation.

The Jabuladies project was initiated by Jabulani owner, Adine Roode, and aims to inspire, enlighten and empower women from our local communities to create a unique collection of hand-embroidered items.

We believe that looking after our planet has many sides to it, including managing our human consumption and production. That’s why we believe in using fresh seasonal ingredients in our kitchen as much as possible to limit our dependence on external fresh produce suppliers. We do this by growing our own produce onsite with our innovative aquaponics system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics.

One of our highly respected butlers at Jabulani, Obert started a new venture outside of working hours, paying forward the opportunities he’s been given and opening a not-for-profit daycare in his garage with his wife.

We’re proud to be members of the Pack for a Purpose initiative that strives to uplift local communities through tourism. We call on our guests to save some space in their suitcase for supplies as outlined in our wishlists for our HERD Elephant Orphanage, Mpisi Primary School, or Hlokomela Clinic to make a difference in our community.

With a sharp, "OY!", the rhino stopped it charge, turn around and trotted back to its mate. Note that the wifi was only available in the office when we went, but it's due for an upgrade any date. Pro-tip: No cell coverage, but the office has a cell tower booster. Turn off your wifi, and your phone will pick up the cell booster if you have a local phone or international plan

It was wonderful food fantastic, staff brilliant, service first class. We saw the big five for the the first time in 12 years.... The only downside, and understandably so, was the inability to move from one room to another, after dark. While our sons were older and able to stay on their own, families with slightly younger children may have to stay in one chalet. Strongly recommend it!!

Don't miss the bush walk--we walked through a field of butterflies, saw all kinds of animal tracks, and enjoyed a different view of the landscape we'd been driving through all week. I would also highly recommend visiting the Thornybush Community Project gardens with Gavin, where some of the beautiful food served in Sabi Sand resorts is grown by local women as part of a community collective. We also visited a school, which had an incredible impact on us. I loved Simbambili--a little piece of my heart is still there

After spending 2 nights at the Dulini River Lodge we spent 2 nights at the Dulini Lodge. Even though both Lodges are in the same Reserve and very close they offer a different athmosphere. The Dulini Lodge gives you a stronger "Africa feeling" in terms of decoration and setup in my view.

The bungalows are very spacious and well equipped.The welcome is kind and warm and the staff is amazing. They provided me with a special birthday dinner which made the stay even more memorable.

The game drives with the Ranger Fred and our tracker May where an experience. We saw a lot and as haveing been on Safari before we received so much more indepth information since we did not have to worry about seeing all the big 5 (which we saw anyway).

The staff are genuinely interested in your adventure and happiness joining in stories and experiences of each game drive .Be prepared for the early starts 5.30 am game drive however believe me this is the best time of the day to see the animals and is a magical time to see the bush. The lodge and rooms are to a very high standard with all rooms having great views and the best bit being no fences !!!! YOU REALLY ARE IN THE BUSH 🙂 . This is without doubt a luxury Safari

The entire staff works hard to ensure a great experience for their guests. Our suite was great, very clean and comfortable . The swing was cozy on the front deck! My daughter and I spent 3 nights at Notten's in April 2017 and we loved everything about it! We loved the fact that we were teamed up with the same driver/tracker/four other guests in the same car over the course of all the days - we had such fun together and really got involved in trying to spot the animals. And we were rewarded with multiple leopard sightings and the other big 5, as well as all the other beautiful animals - zebra, giraffes, kudu, impala etc - and many birds. The rooms - including outdoor shower, dining area, food, pool, gift shop, massage, the lovely candle light (and lack of electric lighting) and special sundowner by the river were all fabulous. We felt so relaxed and welcomed. The staff were professional and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. They went the extra mile to engage with my 9 year old daughter. This place suited us perfectly. It was top class without being pretentious. Worth every penny - and actually better value than some other lodges. Recommended without hesitation. We hope to return one day. Thank you to all - Dale, Suzie, Gift, Desmond, Tulani, Riddent, Joe and everyone else (sorry if names are miss-spelt).

Location and getting here

Firstly, we'll handle everything including your lodging, flights and transfers! Ngala Safari Lodge is closest to Hoedspruit Airport (HDS).  There are daily flights from Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT) to HDS. Once guests arrive at HDS, a 1.5hr road-transfer will have them at the lodge.

This African National Park Is The Perfect Spot To View A Wide Array Of Wildlife

O ne of the first things that likely comes to mind when thinking about Africa is the continent's wildlife. After all, "The Lion King" has brought in $1 billion for Disney, not to mention other popular animal-centric films like the "Madagascar" film series and "Out of Africa." Africa's wildlife has made for a significant safari tourism industry in multiple countries on the continent, especially those with vast swaths of savanna where you can find dozens if not hundreds of animal species for which the continent is famous.

Kruger National Park is the largest national park in South Africa. It also has the most biodiversity out of all of Africa's parks. The top things to see here are the Big 5: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo. Nowadays, their draw is not so much due to how difficult and dangerous they are to hunt, but in how exciting it is to view these megafauna animals in general. Kruger is also home to wild dogs, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, antelopes, hippos, hyenas, and dozens more.

Book Transportation, Lodging, And Tours Ahead Of Your Visit

Shuttles from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) to Kruger National Park depart regularly, but these must be booked in advance with the South African National Park website . Lodging at Kruger National Park ranges from camping to glamping . Visitors can go online to reserve camping spots, cottages, and even luxury suites. Though it is possible to drive yourself through the park, there are multiple options for guided tours.  Siyabona Africa Safari offers both self-driving and guided tour packages for one day or even five days in the park. Sentashya Safaris  has similar options and will even pick you up from your lodging accommodation.

Many of the animals including the Big 5 in Kruger National Park are experiencing concerning drops in population. Though tourism throughout the African continent has shifted away from hunting, it continues to be an issue for wildlife in Africa, as is habitat loss. Game reserves and national parks like Kruger may eventually be the only places where most of these endangered animals — especially the critically endangered rhino — exist at all. Whether you go on safari in Kruger or not, research how you can help endangered animals all over the world.

Fantastic travel agent for African safari family trip!

Wow! Shann was and is fantastic! She figured out a way to make our entire trip work. We are going on a 2 week trip to South Africa and Botswana. She really helped tie it all together as a wonderful, cohesive trip. She is super nice and super smart and very knowledgeable. She is also flexible and thoughtful, etc., etc. When the chips were down (and we literally were considering pulling the plug on the whole trip), she found a way to make the entire itinerary work and got us excited about our wonderful adventure! Highly recommend!
