WHY LABA LABA ?

Laba Laba means butterfly in Yoruba (a West African language). Butterflies play an important role in nature, helping to increase biodiversity. When you see a butterfly, it generally means the area is thriving and healthy. This beautiful winged insect felt like the appropriate symbol to illustrate both our mission and purpose. We want to share spectacular locations of unspoilt nature with you. We make luxury feel effortless, yet accessible, whilst placing a strong accent on enjoying the simple pleasures. Today, East Africa, tomorrow, further afield. DISCOVER OUR NEW WEBSITE labalaba.com

5 Days safari in Selous and Mikumi Safari is probably the only classic Safari to Southern Circuit of Tanzania and we offer you the best of it. Starting and ending at Dar es Salaam this safari takes you to the Greater Selous Ecosystem and gives you the rare chance to experience real African Wilderness in the few untouched areas of Tanzania. Unlike the packed Tourist Areas of the North during the peak safari seasons, This safari gives you the opportunity to be in the secluded middle of an African wilderness with the whole Savannah almost for your own. This is the best place to be if you want that ‘away from the crowds’ safari.

This our 5 day safari in Selous Game Reserve & Mikumi National Park as it is, is a nice mid range lodging safari but we can offer the same package using other upgraded accommodations if you wish or even cheaper places where possible. Ask for free Customization!

Selous and Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar

The same safari can start and end at Zanzibar as we can also arrange a fly in safari straight into Selous Game Reserve. If you are flying from Zanzibar to the Selous Game Reserve you have two options to choose from. You can either choose to fly from Zanzibar to Selous Game Reserve where you will meet up with our safari guide or you can fly early in the morning to Dar es Salaam to start the safari by road together with our safari guide. The cost for these options differ.

If you are short of time and would like to explore northern Tanzania then our 4 days Safari in Tanzania is the best option for you.

We normally help in arranging flights for those who would like to fly to Selous or to Dar es Salaam to start this 5 Days Selous and Mikumi Safari . Let us know if you would like us to help in arranging your flight to Selous from Zanzibar Island.

The ultimate guide to your next Selous Game Reserve Safari

Get to know selous game reserve.

Get to know Tanzania beyond the Serengeti: visit the Selous for walking or boating safaris, big cats and plenty of plains game

Selous, like Ruaha National Park, is one of Tanzania’s best second-time safari destinations, with the focus on walking, plains game vistas and – if you’re lucky –  cats, rhino and wild dog. What’s left of the Selous Game Reserve today is the wonderful Rufiji River and everything north of it, including the vast spaces downstream of Stiegler’s Gorge. You need more time here to see the same number of species as you would in the north, but the river and boating experience are well worth it. You might find the scarce Pel’s fishing owl if you go as far upstream towards Stiegler’s Gorge as possible – and luck is on your side.

Super close to the park. Big open accommodations. Lots of wildlife. Service was excellent. Food was good and nutritious.

The staff was extraordinary friendly and tried to make us feel as comfortable as possible. They went out of their way to book us a safari and even got us petrol for our car. The food at the restaurant was delicious and the best we had in Tanzania. The beds were comfortable and the rooms mostly clean (with the exception of some small insects which are to be expected in the middle of the bush). The location just outside the Selous national park is great and the main gate is just a 10 minute drive away, so we would definitely recommend this accommodation.

Selous Safaris

Selous game reserve.

Selous Game Reserve Location: Southern Tanzania Climate: Hot and dry, wet during Apr, May and Nov Typical Landscape: Rocky outcrops, crocodile infested lakes, hot springs, rivers, doum palms, grassy plains

The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest wildlife reserves in the world, and is raw and wild as your safari will be if you visit this wonderful area. Named after Englishman Sir Frederick Selous, the famous big game hunter and early conservationist – his grave can still be seen where he died, at Beho Beho in 1917 whilst fighting the Germans during World War 1. The Selous is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to it’s huge diversity of wildlife and undisturbed nature.

The Selous Game Reserve covers a total area of 54,600 sq km and has additional buffer zones – no permanent human settlement or human habitation is permitted. The Selous is one of the last remaining true wildernesses in the world and so is a must visit when on safari. The beautiful and majestic Rufiji River flows through the Selous and into the Indian Ocean – and the Selous also boasts the Steigler gorge which is a canyon of 100 metres depth and width. Walking is permitted here, and for those serious explorers and walkers this is a paradise – the abundant game also makes this an ideal first time safari destination, as well as the fact you will be staying in one of Africa’s most luxurious lodges.

The Luxury Safari Company’s favourite luxury camps and lodges in the Selous Game Reserve, in Southern Tanzania, are Sand Rivers Selous , Selous Safari Camp – these combine beautifully as a Southern Tanzania safari (also including Ruaha or Saadani ) and beach holiday in Tanzania, with beach options on Zanzibar , Mozambique , and the Tanzania Coast .

Selous, Location

At over 45,000 square kilometres, Selous is the largest wildlife reserve in Tanzania and is actually larger than Switzerland.

Selous, Location Image 1

The reserve is centred on the broad Rufiji River which lazily winds through a network of open lagoons.

Selous, Location Image 3

The palm tree forests around these lakes are particularly atmospheric and attractive.

Selous Game Reserve is an extremely large and important conservation area located in Southern Tanzania.

Selous is the only major safari reserve to be located on the coast, which means that it has an unusually humid climate and a very languid atmosphere.

It is particularly well known for its motorboat safari out on the Great Rufiji River and walking safari is also widely offered. African wild dogs are a particular speciality.

The main potential downsides for Selous are that the wildlife viewing is not as strong as one might hope, there can be significant vehicle clustering in core areas, the area has a reputation for a lower standard of safari guiding and the reserve experiences serious poaching. Some people may find the hot and humid climate to be less than ideal for safari.

History of  the Selous Game Reserve

The Selous area was first designated  as a protected area in 1896 by German colonial admistration under Hermann von Wissmann and became a trophy hunting reserve in 1905.

The reserve was renamed after legendary British soldier, big game hunter and pioneering conservationist Frederick Courtney Selous, who had stood alongside Cecil Rhodes during his campaign to annex Zimbabwe for the British Empire and who also achieved notoriety in 1899 for speaking out against the Anglo-Boer war in South Africa.

Selous hunted across Africa, notably in the Selous from around 1871, but towards the end of the century his attentions had turned towards the conservation of wildlife rather than its continued extermination.

In 1916, on the outbreak of the First World War, the sixty year old Selous was made Captain of the 25th Royal Fusiliers, winning a DSO in 1916. With his detailed knowledge of the bush, Selous led the chase after a small German guerrilla force that was wreaking havoc throughout the Tanganyika Territory. On New Year’s Day 1917, Selous was shot dead by a sniper close to the banks of the Beho Beho River where his grave can be seen to this day.

In 1922 the British colonial administration extended the area under protection and renamed it the Selous Game Reserve in his honour.

In 1946 the reserve was further extended to its present size, when the government relocated a large number of resident people, officially to rescue them from a sleeping sickness epidemic.

The reserve was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to its wildlife diversity and pristine undisturbed state.

At 54,600 square kilometres, the Selous is actually larger than Switzerland, four times the size of the Serengeti National Park and three times the size of Kruger National Park. It forms a significant part of the enormous 150,000 square kilometre Selous-Niassa ecosystem, the largest tract of wild bush remaining in Africa.

Selous is the only major game reserve in East Africa to be located down on the humid coastal plateau, which creates an unusually languid and tropical atmosphere.

The reserve is extremely scenic in parts, centred on the Great Rufiji River, which meanders through a network of oxbow lakes and channels. The land is largely flat, with distant hills to give perspective, covered with a wide range of different landscapes, notably acacia, miombo and palm forests, marshlands and broad open grasslands.

Wildlife of  the Selous Game Reserve

The Selous is renowned for its prodigious wildlife numbers, with an estimated 120,000 Cape buffaloes, 100,000 wildebeest, 35,000 plains zebras, 40,000 hippos and 4,000 lions.

Other major species include elephants, black rhinos, Maasai giraffes, greater kudus, waterbucks, bushbucks, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, elands, sables, African wild dogs, spotted hyenas, leopards and Nile crocodiles.

During the Jun-Oct dry season you should see a much broader range of major species than most other reserves in East Africa, although not in the quantities and concentrations of somewhere like the Serengeti.

Birds of  the Selous Game Reserve

The Selous Game Reserve contains more than 440 recorded species of birds.

Highlights include pink-backed pelicans, African skimmers, giant kingfishers, carmine bee-eaters, white-fronted bee-eaters, African fish eagles, palmnut vultures, ibises, palm swifts, yellow-billed storks, white-crowned plovers, spur-winged plovers, pied kingfishers, malachite kingfishers, trumpeter hornbills, purple-crested turacos, egrets, herons, Malagasy squacco herons and Pel’s fishing owls.

Conservation issues in  the Selous Game Reserve

To this day the Selous Game Reserve remains mainly a trophy hunting area, with only five percent of the land area being dedicated to photographic tourism. This uncomfortably balance will surely shift in favour of photographic safari as the revenue streams continue to move in that direction.

In the meantime the reserve will continue to experience the negative effects of hunting, including the repeated removal of the largest and healthiest animals and negligent land stewardship by rogue operators.

Of far more immediate concern is the horrific poaching situation, mainly in relation to elephants.

In 1976 the Selous Game Reserve was cited to contain about 109,000 elephants. By 2009 numbers had dropped to 20,000 and by 2013 estimates sat around 13,000. Sources blame corrupt politicians, officials, businessmen and local villagers, who help to connect poachers with illegal ivory markets in the Far East.

In 2018 we received reports from friends in the Selous that the dire situation seemed to be turning around, with far fewer dead elephants being found and the distant sound of gunfire being a much less frequent event. The general feeling is that the political landscape may have shifted sufficiently to make poaching a great deal more difficult.

The best way to support conservation in this area to is to visit and add to the revenues from photographic tourism. Ultimately it is money that does the talking. Additionally it is the areas immediately around the safari lodges which offer the greatest protection and will be the reservoirs from which the wildlife will repopulate once the situation is improved.

In 2016 UNESCO sanctioned a change to the boundary of the Selous Game Reserve, providing access to commercial uranium, a decision which received widespread criticism from conservation bodies.

Safari activities in the Selous Game Reserve

The main activity in Selous is day time vehicle safaris, which are usually done as morning and afternoon excursions. Some lodges also offer full day safaris and we certainly feel that the park is varied and interesting enough to want to explore further afield rather than simply stick to the patch around your camp.

Unusually for Tanzania, off-road driving is permitted, so it is much easier to make the most of important sightings.

Of the predators, lions are the most commonly seen, leopards and wild-dogs dogs being much more occasional sightings.

A real highlight of the Selous is the motorboat safari. This may not be the only reserve in East Africa to offer this kind of river safari, but it is certainly the best. As well as the obvious opportunity to view hippos and crocodiles, encounters with elephants along the riverbank are not unusual and the birding can be excellent. Some camps are able to head upstream to Steigler's Gorge, an atmospheric spot where the river becomes hemmed in by forested hillsides.

Safari operators in Selous are also permitted to offer walking safari, which represents a very pleasant change of pace and a chance to make a rather more intimate connection with the landscape. Most camps do their walking early morning, before the heat of the day has risen, sometimes ending up with a bush breakfast in a remote location before continuing on by vehicle.

However this walking safari rarely includes deliberate approaches onto potentially dangerous animals like elephants and lions, for that you need to head for the nearby Ruaha, or head off to Zimbabwe or Zambia.

Some lodges also offer overnight bivouac camping in remote locations, for guests who want a slightly more intimate and potentially exciting bush experience.

Incidentally most people around here refer to this activity as 'fly-camping', which refers to the old days when hunters would go out and camp in fly country, refering to the tsetse flies that previously infested these wildlife areas and protected them from human settlement.

Safari seasonality in the Selous Game Reserve

Since Selous is down on the coastal plateau it experiences high humidity, making for a hot and sticky climate year round, as well as much higher levels of precipitation and a much less pronounced dry season.

This is in stark contrast with the majority of game reserves in East Africa, which are at much higher altitudes and have generally more dry and comfortable climates. This can be a major deciding factor for people who do not enjoy this kind of tropical environment.

The best time of year for safari is generally considered to be the Jul-Oct dry season, when the wildlife is concentrated along the river, although is also the period when visitor numbers and prices both peak.

Selous safari seasonlity : Jun-Oct

This is the period conventionally considered to be the best time to visit the park, the main 'dry season', although one can still expect light rain to fall roughly one in every three days on average. Reasonably high temperatures are significantly exaggerated by high relative humidities, usually around 80% to 85%. Afternoons can be stifling and nights sticky.

Because of this continued rainfall throughout the year and because of the presence of so much surface water in the form of lakes and rivers, Selous does not operate in quite the same way as a more conventional dry season reserve. The usual inward migration from dry hinterlands in towards the permanent sources of water does take place, but the effect is slightly less pronounced. Wildlife concentrations in the areas around the camps to improve noticeably, especially into July and August, but never reach the levels of more arid and harsh environments such as Tarangire, Katavi or Ruaha.

Throughout this period Selous is a sweltering, languid place, wonderfully atmospheric, with reliable vehicle safari, but where motorboat and walking safaris are at least if not more enjoyable.

Selous safari seasonlity : Nov-Mar

The arrival of the short rains in November can be much less of an event here as it is in Ruaha for example. The fact that the dry season is not usually completely dry, means that the arrival of light rains tends to have relatively little effect on either flora or fauna, although one can expect a little more seasonal flowering of plants and a slight dispersal of wildlife to the hinterlands.

Selous is therefore usually considered to be still in prime condition for safari right through Nov-Dec, making it a particularly attractive proposition over the Dec-Jan holiday season.

Into February however the rains really should be more pronounced. Flora should start to show significant new growth and the park as a whole should take on a fresh sheen. Many of those animals will start to have their young. So this period tends to be a favourite amongst more experienced safari people who are less concerned about the volume of sightings.

Selous safari seasonlity : Apr-May

April is usually the month which sees the greatest rainfall here in Selous, with May not far behind. Most of the camps are closed for this period and flight services from Dar es Salaam are suspended.

Safari accommodation in the Selous Game Reserve

The Selous has a decent collection of around a dozen authentic lodges, whose combined bed capacity amounts to little more than 300 visitors.

The best lodges are generally those around the string of lakes north of the Rufiji River, with Lake Manze Camp marking the epicentre for wildlife viewing.

Outside the eastern Mtemere Gate there is a cluster of simple properties which serve the budget overland and self-drive market, which spill significant traffic into the park, disadvantaging the lodges on this side.

The further west you go the better for traffic avoidance, with Beho Beho Camp and Sand Rivers Camp both being in really peaceful areas, but still within reach of the best wildlife areas.

Further west and south the lodgs become more remote, but the quality of wildlife viewing drops away sharply.

Because of the sticky climate and lower quality guiding we generally tend to keep stays here down to 3 to 4 nights in a single camp, preferring to deploy more time in other areas.

Having said that, if you are a real safari connoisseur then it can also be great to spend much longer in the reserve, maybe 5 to 9 nights, travelling overland between two or even three camps, the different sectors of the park have very different atmospheres and it is nice to get a wider experience than simply the area around a single camp. But those kinds of trip are few and far between.

Safari access to the Selous Game Reserve

Because Selous is so easily accessed by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar on the coast, it tends to figure most prominently short 2 to 4 night sampler safaris to combine with longer stays down on the beach.

It can also form part of a longer flying safari through southern Tanzania, usually combined with the superb and very different Ruaha National Park, perhaps spending 7 to 10 nights between the two locations.

These trips can be extended by 3 to 4 nights by adding the rural retreat at Mufindi Highlands Lodge.

On very rare occasions some or all of the connecting legs on a trip like this may be done overland, in which case trips might also include further safari in Mikumi National Park and forest trekking in Udzungwa Mountains.

However these overland safaris are made much less appealing by the very long distances and the fact that a high proportion of the road miles are along the busy TanZam highway, which is really not ideal.

Downsides of the Selous Game Reserve

Although the Selous leads out with all these wonderful statistics about its size and animal numbers, in reality the core wildlife viewing area is relatively small, concentrating on a sector along the north bank of the Rufiji River which represents only around 3% of the total area. This is partly due to this being a particular sweetspot for wildlife, but also due to the fact that the majority of the reserve is used for hunting. This is gradually changing, as the demand for photographic safari overtakes that for hunting safari, but progress is frustratingly slow.

The main consequence of this squeeze is that there can be significant vehicle clustering in core areas, which seems somewhere between ironic given the size of the place. The situation is exacerbated by the rash of poor quality lodges which has sprung up outside the main park gates. In high season a small fleet of vehicles spills into the reserve from these entry points. It is not so much the volume of vehicles that is the problem, but the fact that they are so tightly clustered and the road network is not well set up to disperse them. However there are camps deeper inside the park where you really can feel a the majesty and isolation of this wonderful reserve.

Perhaps the greatest disappointment in the Selous is the poor standard of safari guiding. We have encountered this in lodges of all levels. The biggest problem is a general lack of enthusiasm and an unwillingness to push the envelope. Vehicle safari can, on occasion, feel rather perfunctory, like the guides are just going through the motions. There also seems to be a general resistance to doing full day vehicle safaris in most lodges, which we think are essential to gain a proper feel for the place. We are not saying that there aren't good guides in the Selous, but in our experience they tend to be the exception rather than the rule. We have been assured by some of the best lodges that a lot of work has gone into improving the guiding, so we hope to be able to confirm this in the near future.

Because 95% of the reserve is dedicated to hunting, the animals, which cross unknowingly from one area to the next, are naturally more skittish. When a buck high-tails at 300 metres you can be sure it has grown up in an environment where high-powered rifles are in common usage. Fortunately a lot of animals have figured out its best to stick to the photographic areas and these tend to be pretty relaxed around vehicles.

Poaching is also a major and increasing problem in the Selous, most notably of elephants, which are being slaughtered here in frightening numbers.

Some camps are also able to offer bivouac camping in remote locations.

Selous, Activities Image 7

Selous contains several good small lodges which focus on offering quality safari experiences.

Selous, Accommodation Image 1

Although the focus is very much on authenticity, the camps are not without their comforts.

Selous, Access

Access is usually by light aircraft from Arusha, Serengeti, Ruaha, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.

Selous, Seasonality

The area is usually best for wildlife during the May-Oct dry season, but there are good reasons to visit during other months.

The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected game reserve on the African continent covering an area of 54,600 square kilometers comprised of a vast wilderness with forests, grassy plains, mountains and open woodlands. This reserve was named after Frederick Selous Courtney who was a great Hunter and explorer. Selous Safari Holidays are highly recommended as in size this reserve is twice the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and three times Kruger National Park in South Africa. This reserve was established in 1922, and in 1982 it was declared a UNESCO world heritage site thanks to its rich diversity of wildlife and uninterrupted nature. The Tanzanian national park authority (TANAPA) in 2019 proposed and declared a change of identity of the northern sector of this reserve such that it is known as The Nyerere National Park as a way of honoring President Julius Nyerere who was the first president of Tanzania. Today the boundaries of this Nyerere National Park are being properly established but according to sources it is believed that this park will encompass the photographic sector in the northern part of the reserve and stretch out all the way to the wilderness area of River Rufiji to the south. See how much a Tanzania safari costs .

Where is Selous Game Reserve Located?

The reserve is located in the southern part of Tanzania along the southern Tanzania safari circuit and offers the best escape from the large tourist crowds in the northern safari destinations like Serengeti while offering you a remarkable wildlife experience. It is considered to be among the hidden gems in the county and offers a wide range of Selous Game Reserve Camps for accommodation. The reserve is located about 219 kilometers from the busy city of Dar es salaam and may take about 4 hours drive. Selous Game Reserve has a new name, Nyerere National Park Tanzania .

Regions of Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve is crossed by River Rufiji (which is the largest river in the country) in the center and forms a network of swamps, channels and lakes to create a very unique ecological system. The reserve is separated into 2 major sections by the river which are the northern and southern Selous. The Northern Selous: this region covers just about 5% of the total area of the reserve and hunting is completely prohibited in this area which has been exclusively set aside for photographic safaris. See, the best time to visit . The southern Selous : the southern part of the river is separated into various hunting blocks each covering an area of approximately 1,000 square kilometers however we emphasize that we do not operate or even support wildlife hunting.

Wildlife in Selous Game Reserve

There are a number of wildlife   mammals found within this national reserve among which are: approximately 145,000 buffalos, 4,000 Lions, 100,000 wildebeests, large hands of giraffes, 35000 zebras, 40000 hippos, 250,000 impalas, large numbers of Lichtenstein’s hartebeests, waterbucks, elands and bushbucks, in addition to leopards, crocodiles and hyenas. Furthermore this is among the few wildlife sanctuaries on the African continent where you will find the puku antelopes the African wild dogs as well as the sable antelope. Previously the Selous was home to a very large number of elephants but because of excessive poaching these numbers have greatly reduced and all these can be seen during the game drives on the Selous Safari Holidays .

Birds in Selous Game Reserve

This game reserves is home to over 445 different birds species and these have been recorded to live in the various habitats within the reserve for instance along the lake areas are the giant kingfishers, the pink backed pelican as well as the African skimmer; along the sandbanks you will see the white-fronted bee-eater, fish eagle, carmine, ibises and palmnut vultures. Tanzania's true wild side is in its southern reaches, where legendary wildlife reserves like Ruaha National Park and the great Selous (now Nyerere National Park) stretch for thousands of square miles relatively undisturbed by human activity. Selous and Ruaha have been protected for more than a hundred years and they shelter globally important populations of wildlife: massive prides of lions (10 percent of Africa's lions reside here), plenty of crocodile, lion, leopard, cheetah, hippo, elephant, black rhino, buffalo, and more than 400 bird species. And southern Tanzania is absolutely the best place in Africa to watch packs of African wild dogs on the hunt. Yet these remote reserves see a fraction of the tourists that visit the northern parks! With our long-time Tanzania safari leader Goodluck Urassa, we'll set off for exciting game drives, off-road tracking, bush walks, river safaris, and even a rainforest hike. Urassa is known for his keen spotter's eye and extensive knowledge of African wildlife, and he'll be joined by local guides at all our camps. We'll explore Nyerere National Park, Tanzania's second largest wildlife sanctuary, watered by the photogenic Rufiji River, Mikumi National Park, with its plains game and African hunting dogs, and the immaculate rainforest of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, home to a wide array of endemic birds and plants—and even two endemic species of primates! Our grand finale finds us in immense Ruaha National Park, Tanzania's best kept secret, with 7,800 square miles of wildlife-rich wilderness spanning both the eastern and southern African biomes. There are but a handful of safari camps in this vast region, and we've chosen the most comfortable and best located ones, where we'll enjoy a warm welcome. Join us for an unforgettable off-the-beaten-path safari!

What the Trip is Like

The game-tracking walks are accompanied by a professional tracker and are conducted at a pace that allows an intimate exploration of the African bush.

The longer optional mountain hike on Day 8 follows a track through montane forest, but our group will likely leave the trail for periods of time to track the mangabey monkeys. This hike can be steep, slippery, and have loose footing at times, and therefore it is only recommended for travelers in good physical conditioning and with confidence in their stability on rough trails. The shorter option follows a more established trail and can be taken at a slower pace.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India
  • Small ship cruises

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

  • Tuscany & the Cinque Terre
  • Argentina: Hikes and Estancias of Patagonia
  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as  Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin,  are Trip Level 3.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

  • Ultimate Patagonia
  • Hiking the Spanish Pyrenees

Level 5 – Strenuous

Day 1: Zanzibar to Selous – Game Drive and Sunset Boat Safari In the morning, you will start your safari in Zanzibar, flying in a light aircraft to the Selous, one of Africa’s most significant game reserves. On arrival at Mtemere airstrip in Selous, our driver guide will meet you for greetings and a briefing about your tour plan. Game drives are the best way to explore more giant games, including Predators. In addition, the Selous is home to the largest population of wild dogs in Africa, which are a real highlight if you are lucky enough to encounter a pack. You will start game drives with picnic lunches until the afternoon; you will return to the camp and relax for one hour, then depart for an afternoon boat safari. The boat safari is superb in the afternoon, watching wildlife come to the water’s edge to drink and getting close to bird colonies, hippos and crocodiles. Finally, you will return to the camp and relax at the fire bonfire, dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Bush Walks, Game Drives and Afternoon Departure to Zanzibar Wake up early for tea or coffee, then depart for guided bush walks inside the park, an exciting chance to get close to nature and the best way to learn the details of the African bush. Walking along the firmed trail through the African bushes on foot brings about a new way of appreciating the natural environment. You will return for breakfast, then depart for a game drive exploring the game-rich areas in the park, driving through the savannah and along the river and lakes; these are ideal game-rich areas of Lake Manze, Siwandu, Nzelekela and Tagalala. Animals are expected, including elephants, giraffes, lions, buffalos, zebras and even rare African wild dogs. You will enjoy a picnic lunch at lunchtime in a beautiful location with a clear view of the park. After the lunch break, you will proceed with your journey sightseeing the African bushes. In the afternoon, you will return to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar.

The Retreat-Selous

2. The Retreat River Suites Es gibt 3 Luxus River Suiten (Nyati, Tumbili and Wilderbeest) direkt und teilweise sogar überlappend am Ruaha Fluss.

some hotels could have been better

It was jam packed with every place I wanted to go and see. I especially love my photo of us setting out on the night time river cruise in St Petersburg and the Peter...

I really did not buy much and what I did buy was small gifts for others .

Good hotels, some better than others. Interesting itinerary

Too rushed. Optional tour rather too short

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

selous safari buchen

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.
