Rolling Stones Perform ‘Time Is on My Side’ With New Orleans Legend Irma Thomas at Steamy Jazz Fest: Concert Review
By Caryn Rose
- Chris Cornell: Watch 12 Incredible Performances From Across His Career 7 years ago
“We haven’t done a matinee show in years,” Mick Jagger observed drolly, halfway through The Rolling Stones ’ first appearance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on Thursday evening. As usual, the Stones began their set with “Start Me Up” — but shortly after 5 p.m., launching into an early but enthusiastic 18-song set of old hits and new numbers from 2023’s “Hackney Diamonds,” and a couple of local surprises in honor of the occasion.
Popular on Variety
For “Let it Bleed,” the Stones welcomed Dwayne Dopsie, the self-proclaimed “King of Accordion” and leader of the Zydeco Hellraisers. It was hard to figure out who was having more fun with this particular arrangement, him or the individual Stones. The ever-reliable Ron Wood — who covered many bases during the evening’s performance — moved to lap steel and the band gave Dopsie the solo spot; Keith Richards seemed to just barely graze his guitar strings (not that the song needed more) while beaming at their guest. Jazz Fest always welcomes a crowd from far beyond New Orleans, but there were still plenty of locals in the crowd, and there was a palpable feeling of pride at watching one of their own onstage with the international superstars.
But that particular “one of us!” vibe would ratchet way up with the next guest, none other than the “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” Irma Thomas. Thomas originally recorded “Time Is on My Side,” a song the young Stones turned into one of their earliest hits. “We heard this great song in 1964,” Jagger said, confirming the worst-kept secret in New Orleans, as Thomas was escorted onto the stage and took her place alongside the band. It was one of those rare moments where Mick Jagger was not in control of his stage. Thomas is a Jazz Fest regular, with her shows at the Gospel Tent always a must-see and a highlight of any festival weekend. At 83, she is still a poised and commanding presence, and nothing about that changed because she was now onstage with the Rolling Stones. Jagger mostly provided vocal support and harmony for Thomas’ vocals. Their version of “Time Is on My Side” was pretty much a note-for-note cover of her version, but in a sadly common syndrome of the era, theirs was the hit. At least some karmic balance was achieved on Thursday.
The crowd was audibly excited when the french horn began the intro to “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” and Mick complimented the audience on their participation at its conclusion. This was the moment when he began talking about how “We’re a welcoming crowd, aren’t we?” and then segued into a comment welcoming Louisiana governor Jeff Landry. “We want to include him too, even if he wants to take us back to the Stone Age,” he quipped, then immediately segued into introducing the ancillary musicians onstage with the Stones. (Mick, next time, consider “Street Fighting Man.”)
Next up was Keith Richards’ nightly solo spot. On this night, that honor went to “Little T&A” from 1981’s “Tattoo You,” in a version that included the horn section. It wasn’t the crispest version of a song that’s already fairly laid-back, but it was late in the set and was likely a casualty of the heat. Keith Richards was one of the few musicians onstage who remained in his full regalia of long-sleeve satin shirt (in various colors) as well as a red knit beanie all night. Richards was grinning ear to ear all night long, even if his contributions weren’t as strong as they’ve been in recent years.
“Sympathy for the Devil” is always a powerful moment in a Stones show, but its intensity unquestionably suffered by being performed in broad daylight. Jagger donned a ringmaster’s jacket that shimmered with blue and green sequins like a mermaid’s tail, but he only wore it as long as the moment demanded. “Miss You” fared better, even though Jagger would have been better off eschewing the electric guitar he dons for the briefest of moments for the harmonica he picked up at the end, at least in New Orleans where a large majority of the audience has genuine appreciation and respect for a good harp player; there was audible applause when he finished. Darryl Jones executed a colorful bass solo on command, with Jagger punching him playfully in the shoulder in approval when he finished.
Despite the heat and daylight, the band found its second wind in the back half of the set. “Honky Tonk Women” was sharp, less raunchy than celebratory. “Paint It Black” felt fresh and vibrant, and Richards was absolutely dominant during “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” He always seems to find a new way to hit those unmistakable chords and they rang out with authority across the fairgrounds. It was a moment where you realize you are hearing the person who wrote the song that you have heard hundreds, even thousands of times, play the chords live and in front of you. The show ended with “Satisfaction,” which was full of verve and genuine excitement both onstage and in the audience. It’s the song that everybody wants to see the Rolling Stones perform, even if they don’t consciously know it walking into the concert; there’s always such a collective sigh of, well, satisfaction when it’s performed.
Setlist: Start Me Up / Get Off of My Cloud / Out Of Time / Angry / Let It Bleed / Time Is On My Side / Whole Wide World / Tumbling Dice / You Can’t Always Get What You Want / Little T&A / Sympathy For The Devil / Honky Tonk Women / Miss You / Gimme Shelter / Paint It Black / Jumpin’ Jack Flash / encore: Sweet Sounds of Heaven / Satisfaction

Marketing a Local Business on YouTube: $40k on the Side Hosting Walking Tours
- [2022 Update: The $5k Shaded Seats Side Hustle Spinoff]
In early 2022, I caught up with Rob again to see how business had weathered the pandemic.
As you might guess, 2020 was a disaster, but the tour business did rebound a bit in 2021âthough still a far cry from 2019âs results.
Along the way through, Rob built ShadedSeats.com , a resource for baseball and football fans to find stadium tickets where they wonât get blasted by the sun.
In 2021, the site earned around $5,000 in affiliate commissions, mostly from Google search traffic that the keyword research tools didnât have any search volume.
Sometimes you canât rely on the tool and youâve got to trust your ability to answer a common pain point!

Rob brought in $40k last year hosting tours in of Washington, D.C. â all on the side from his day job, and with no marketing budget.
However, if you Google âWashington, D.C tour guideâ, Rob Pitingoloâs TripHacksDC.com is nowhere to be seen.
So whatâs secret sauce?
Heâs been creating helpful tourist-friendly content on YouTube , and outlet largely ignored by his better-funded competitors.
His channel has had more than 1.4 million views to date, and heâs funneling those viewers to his site where they can sign up for a tour.
In fact, his channel has grown so much that heâs partnered with YouTube and ad revenue from his videos has become another income stream for his business.
Tune in to hear how Rob has grown his business into a fun and cash-flowing side hustle, how he leverages YouTube to reach his target customers rather than traditional tour marketplaces, and how heâs growing the business beyond just himself giving tours.
Rob is coming up on his 8th season as a tour guide for Washington, D.C. The first four of those were working for a company as a side job to his main day job.
It was while working for that company that he came up with the idea of running his own tours.
âI always kinda knew it would be great to be the boss,â Rob told me.
He started thinking about how he could operate his own tours without directly competing with his current employer. Rob was running bike and Segway tours for the company he was working for, so he decided to do walking tours for his own business.
Related: 40+ Ways to Get Paid to Walk
Rob told me the challenge that held him back for many years was how to get started. He was aware that a lot of the larger tour companies had a huge ad budget, which he didnât have.
But he decided to jump in and started using YouTube to promote his business as he explains throughout this episode.
âI kinda discovered it by accident,â Rob explained.
Rob was going on vacation himself and was Googling various phrases about the cities he was going to visit.
He was searching the usual touristy stuff like, âThe best places to eatâ, and âHow to ride the local public transportation?â
He ended up going down a YouTube rabbit hole (as so often happens) and was watching various videos on a channel about the places he was going to visit. The channel had loads of great information, and he really liked the personality of the person.
It was when he was scrolling through the comments, he started noticing that a lot of people were asking if she would show them around when they visited. But the channel host always replied saying ânoâ, as sheâs not a tour guide.
Rob was a tour guide, however.
It got him to thinking about how he could produce the same kind of content for Washington, D.C, and when people would ask if heâd show them around, he could say âyes!â.
Rob knew from the start that he was going to use YouTube as a platform to drive business. So, he included a call-to-action at the beginning and end of every video from the very first one he uploaded.
To do this, he introduces himself as a tour guide and asks people to click through to his website in the description to sign up for a tour date if theyâre interested.
Rob had a little bit of experience filming home movies and stuff like that, but he was new to YouTube. He remembers his first videos well. In fact, some of them are still some of his most popular videos to-date.
The first video he ever made is called âMust Have Smartphone Apps for Your DC Tripâ. That was around 2 years ago, and the video has around 49k views to date.
The second video he made is called âHow to Ride Washington DC Metro.â This video is by far the most viewed video on his channel to date with more than 137k views at the time of writing this.
Rob did a load of research into YouTube SEO and best practices before posting his first video.
He said he listened to Episode #207 of The Side Hustle Show with Thomas Frank from CollegeInfoGeek.com â there are some awesome tips in that episode so I recommend checking it out.
He also uses TubeBuddy , which is a tool that recommends the best tags to add to your videos, has a keyword tool, and some other useful SEO applications.
As for Robâs top tip when making YouTube videos:
âThe most important thing is just being consistent,â he told me.
Rob tries to publish a new video every Sunday, especially in the peak times of the year.
Rob set up his website just before his YouTube channel. He has a calendar on his site, so people can check his availability and book tours. This is powered by a plugin called Team Booking for those who are interested in the tech stuff.
After he started posting videos, he would check every day to see if there was a booking. It ended up taking about 2 and a half months to get his first booking. But he was excited to receive a notification that someone had watched one of his videos, clicked through and made a booking.
This person booked their tour for about a month in advance, by the time it came around Rob had booked in another 4-5 tours too.
Rob said most tour companies use popular travel sites like TripAdvisor.com , Expedia.com , and GetYourGuide.com to market their business and drive traffic.
He calls this a âvery risky strategyâ though, as they charge high commissions. As much as 20%-30% on the low-end Rob told me.
Heâs fortunate he hasnât had to go down this route. YouTube is the top of Robâs sales funnel as drives almost all of his business, and itâs a much wider funnel as he can create content around all kinds of topics.
Rob also said that people using those sites to find tours are typically looking for tours, and thatâs not necessarily people who are booking a trip to Washington, D.C. A lot of his business comes from people who were not looking for a tour.
âI donât think of my competition as other tour companies. I think of my competition as anything else someone could do with their time,â Rob explained.
âI undercharged my first year, I know this,â Rob told me.
Rob looked at what other tour operators were charging and could see that $45 per person was the average. He could take groups of 10 at a time, so that would mean $450 per tour.
He thought that was high for a new company starting out without any reviews, so he decided to set his price at $250 for a group of 10 for his first year.
Rob has tweaked his pricing since. Heâs currently charging $300 for his 3-hour tour, and $200 for his 2-hour tour he does in the winter months. Heâs considering testing a higher price for the busy months this year.
Rob still has a full-time day job and is running his tour business as a side hustle.
From working as a tour guide in Washington, D.C already, he knew the most popular tour by far was the evening monuments tour. Which worked out well as it meant he could do his day job and hold evening tours.
His office is a convenient 15-minute walk from the meeting spot for his tours, so he leaves work at 5 and kicks off his tours in the evening.
He also does a few day tours when he can fit them in and a lot of weekend tours. But the evening monument tour is by far the most popular, so it makes scheduling his workload a lot easier.
Rob recognizes that one person can only do so many tours, especially as this is his side hustle.
Heâs already started recruiting extra tour guides to help out. He took on 2 tour guides last year for the 2019 season and is planning on expanding his team to 4-5 for the 2020 season.
With his own time so limited, heâs not able to train tour guides from scratch. Heâs had to hire experienced tour guides and pay them a little more but is fine with this as it adds value to his service.
The answer to this according to Rob is âno.â
Rob explained that the monuments are always the same, but the people are always different. The benefit of taking these small groups of 10 is that heâs able to deliver a personalized experience.
This means no two tours are the same and it keeps it fresh and interesting for Rob.
Selling tickets for tours makes up the majority of his income, but Rob also has some other revenue streams ringing the cash register:
- YouTube ad revenue â With more than 14k subscribers and 1.4 million views to date Rob is part of the YouTube partner program. He said ad revenue only makes up about 5% of his companyâs revenue, which heâs fine with as he doesnât want to stress about views and algorithm changes.
- Affiliate commissions â Rob is an affiliate for some hotels he recommends in his videos. He puts recommending the right hotel before the ones that pay him, however, and says itâs also difficult to convert on these sales so itâs only a small piece of the pie.
- Ebook â With more than 5 hours of video footage on YouTube Rob wanted to put all his best content into an ebook to make it easier for people to download and consume.
- Merch â Customers would ask for t-shirts on occasion, so Rob set up some merch with a print-on-demand service .
- One-on-one consultations â Itâs not something Rob advertises, but if someone emails him directly asking for a one-on-one consultation, heâs been happy to oblige.
âEverything happens in batches,â Rob told me.
Guided tours is a seasonal business. There are busy months, such as March and April when the Cherry Blossom Festival in on, and July when most people take family vacations.
There are also months that are almost completely dead, such as January and February. During the quiet months, Rob steps up his video content and will record 15-20 videos to drip feed out over the following months.
Rob also has a podcast, which he started as a way to cover topics in more detail that he didnât think he could produce video content for.
For example, he talked about the weather in DC with a meteorologist, and did an episode on the best places to eat with the food editor from Washingtonian Magazine.
Looking into 2020, Robâs plans are to carry on producing YouTube content and increase the number of tour guides he has working for him as his workload increases. As well as having his subcontractors handle all the trivia tours so he can focus on the private tours himself.
âPractice makes perfect.â

80s rock legend face-plants during New Jersey concert
Mötley CrĂŒe kicked off their tour in Atlantic City on Friday night with frontman Vince Neil taking a fall onstage.
The â80s rock icons were only a few songs into their set and performing the song âWild Sideâ when Neil, 63, began skipping back and forth from one side of the stage to the other until he tripped, sending him face first on the stageâs floor.
Several videos shared by fans on Facebook and YouTube show the moment the fall happened.
Fortunately, he wasnât seriously injured. He got back up quickly and began singing to âWild Sideâ as soon as he was back up.
Neil is no stranger to onstage accidents. Back in 2021, on his solo tour, he fell off stage. The show was cut short and Neil was rushed to the hospital where he reportedly suffered a few broken ribs.
The fall comes weeks after Neil did press ahead of the tour in which he did interviews where he expressed his thoughts on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and how he thinks the band will â probably be dead â before they get inducted as well as how he still hates the bandâs 1997 album âGeneration Swineâ two decades later.
Neil also wasnât the only rock star to face-plant onstage this weekend. During Pearl Jamâs tour opener in Vancouver over the weekend, guitarist Mike McCready fell off the stage during the performance of âPorchesâ though he was not seriously injured and was able to play the rest of the night.

EU urges China to use influence on Russia and Iran
Ursula von der Leyen says EU counts on Xi Jinping to lean on Russia to end war in Ukraine, limit Iranâs missiles and drones.
The European Union hopes China will help persuade Russia to end its war in Ukraine and limit an Iranian weapons build-up.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen raised the scenario on Monday after talks in Paris with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which also included trade issues. The EU hopes Beijing will lean on its ally Russia and help stem Iranâs proliferation of missiles and drones, the head of the EU executive body said.

âWe count on China to use all its influence on Russia to end Russiaâs war of aggression against Ukraine,â von der Leyen said after meeting with Xi alongside French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace.
âPresident Xi has played an important role in de-escalating Russiaâs irresponsible nuclear threats , and I am confident that President Xi will continue to do so against the backdrop of ongoing nuclear threats by Russia,â she said.
The meeting in Paris took place on the same day the Kremlin announced Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered nuclear drills. The exercises were in response to statements by Western countries about sending troops into Ukraine, Moscow added. Macron said last week that his country would consider sending ground troops  to Ukraine if Kyiv requests backup.
Von der Leyen added her hopes that China could âplay an important role in limiting the irresponsible proliferation of Iranian ballistic missiles and dronesâ.
Von der Leyen and Macron also pressed China on the topic of trade. They pushed Xi to ensure more balanced relations with the worldâs biggest trading bloc.
âThe future of our continent will also very clearly depend on our capacity to further develop in a balanced way our relationship with China,â Macron said as the three leaders sat at a round table.
Xi was in Europe for the first time in five years at a time of growing business tensions that include the EU investigating Chinese industries such as electric vehicle while Beijing probes French-made brandy.
Von der Leyen was more blunt, saying the relationship was hurt by unequal market access and Chinese state subsidies.
After the meeting, she told reporters that the EU âcannot absorb massive overproduction of Chinese industrial goods flooding its marketâ.
âEurope will not waver from making tough decisions needed to protect its market,â she said.
In brief public comments before the talks, Xi said he viewed relations with Europe as a priority of Chinaâs foreign policy and that both should stay committed to the partnership.
âAs the world enters a new period of turbulence and change, as two important forces in this world, China and Europe should adhere to the positioning of partners, adhere to dialogue and cooperation,â Xi said.

Neighbor wonders whether child witnessed killing of southwest side woman, tanya lynn boulding, 33, allegedly shot dead by husband.
Katrina Webber , Crime Fighters Reporter
Robert Samarron , Photojournalist
SAN ANTONIO â The Bexar County Medical Examinerâs Office has identified a woman who was found dead Tuesday inside her Southwest Side home.
The office said Tanya Lynn Boulding, 33, died of a shotgun wound .
San Antonio police found Boulding inside her mobile home in the 8600 block of SW Loop 410 after conducting a welfare check on her there.
They believe her husband, 32-year-old Jaevel Andrew Boulding, murdered her in the hours ahead of his own deadly encounter with officers.
Chief William McManus discussed some of the details during a news conference later Tuesday night.
He said officers had been looking for her husband after finding Bouldingâs body.
They were able to track him down through an OnStar system inside the car he was driving.
McManus said the man noticed officers as he exited a business in a shopping center, located in the 1800 block of Vance Jackson, then immediately started shooting at them.
Four officers fired back, killing him, McManus said. SAPD identified the four officers as
At the time of the news conference, the chief did not offer many details about Bouldingâs murder.
Juan Cervantes, who lives next door to her, said he was puzzled to see police cars outside Bouldingâs home that day.
âNormally, I come every Tuesday, and I see the lady and her sister outside. And this time was a lot different,â Cervantes said. âProbably the worst-case scenario is we donât know what really happened. We donât know what initiated it.â
Cervantes said he had limited interactions with the husband, but Boulding was always friendly and helpful.
âSometimes, I have friends coming over, and they usually let us park over there if we need a parking spot,â Cervantes said.
Outside the home Thursday morning, there were no obvious signs of the violence.
However, there were several toys and a childâs bicycle scattered about the yard.
Cervantes said Boulding did have a young son who lived in the home with her.
KSAT 12 News sent an email Thursday morning asking police, who had never previously mentioned the existence of a child, whether Bouldingâs son may have been in the home at the time of the murder and possibly witnessed it.
A public information officer for SAPD replied, saying that she was not able to confirm whether the child was in the home that day, but that he was with other family members now.
So far, police have not released a possible motive for Bouldingâs killing.
