In this post, I’ve put together a list of champagne tours in France so you can plan your next champagne trip. This post covers some of the big champagne houses where it’s usually easier to schedule visits especially if you plan ahead. I am a big fan of smaller grower champagne producers, many of which are family owned. Many of these smaller producers aren’t set up to manage tastings in English, especially at the last minute. Discover the cellars. When you go into the cellars, you’ll have to go through 6 kilometers of passageways but it’s worth it. In this section, there are 11 million bottles of Champagne being stored.

But what makes many visitors so fascinated about the cellars is that there are additional 750,000 magnums of reserve wine stored by the village of origin as well as vintage by vintage.

Wine tasting. You can’t end the tour without tasting Billecart-Salmon Champagne. The family has a summer house where you can taste their creations. You’ll be able to witness the beauty of the first Cru village situated in the heart of the grapevines on the Reims Mountain hillsides.

When it comes to luxury wines, Veuve Clicquot is one of the first Champagnes that comes to mind. It should also be on top of your list of Champagne tours in France.

La Maison Mumm

You’ll also see a sign of dedication by Napoleon, who was a huge Dom Pérignon Champagne fan. And did you know that the cellar was used during World War I? That is one of the fascinating facts you can learn when you visit the cellars.

Maison Dom Pérignon is currently not open for public visits, but you can book a private tour with third-party sites.

Moët & Chandon

Moët & Chandon is basically an empire that owns several luxury goods brands including Champagne Dom Pérignon. Nestled in Épernay, the Champagne House boasts a rich history that is worth learning about. 

Besides their luxurious wines, there are several ways to explore this magnificent Maison. From walking through their cellars and terroirs to Champagne tastings, a private tour of the Maison Moët & Chandon is a great way to spend quality time in Champagne France.

Take a stroll through the vineyards. Drive through Champagne vineyards with breathtaking views. You can then visit the private area of Fort Chabrol to immerse yourself in the region’s biodiversity. Then, enjoy a glass of Grand Vintage, Grand Vintage Rosé. Driving through the champagne countryside (before drinking, not after!) is one of my favorite things to do because the vineyards are so beautiful.

Walk the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. You can take your own self-guided tour by spending a day exploring the Avenue de Champagne. On this street, multiple champagne houses are located close to each other and you can walk between them to do tastings. Just remember to check about scheduling the tastings in advance in case they are busy.

Understanding Champagne as a Wine

It’s no secret that Champagne is a very special wine. Surprisingly, how these wines are made is still a mystery to many. At its core, Champagne is an incredibly well made wine that takes dedication and patience to produce. It is a wine that is intimately tied to the “terroir” of the region, and each house’s unique philosophy on production.

Champagne is made as a blend of three main grape varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, & Meunier . The process has its roots in blending, in which still wines of each varietal are made from different parcels of land and then blended together, creating the signature cuvee for each producer.

In some cases, the winemaker may be working with as many as 400 different base wines! Once the blend is decided upon, the wine is inoculated with yeast for a second time, and sealed. As the fermentation occurs for the second time in the bottle, the bi-product — carbon dioxide — is trapped in the sealed environment. This creates the bubbles that make Champagne so famous.

The wines age with the yeasts in the bottle for a minimum of 15 months, but most producers choose to age their wines for much longer periods. This length of aging helps to create the toasty aromatic signature of Champagne.

Each producer has its own signature blend. For example, Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label is a signature blend for that producer. However, the same producer may also make a multitude of other “cuvees”, including single-vintage or single-parcel Champagnes. The number of days you spend in Champagne largely depends on your particular travel style. However, we recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Champagne to get a taste of what the region has to offer. In this amount of time, you can visit several of the major Champagne houses, enjoy wine tastings, and explore some of the beautiful countryside and historic towns within the region. 2-3 days will give you enough time to have a good overview of the region and its wine-making traditions. If you have more time to spare, you can easily spend a week or more in Champagne, especially if you want to visit some of the smaller, family-run Champagne houses or take part in some of the region’s many festivals and events.

What is the best time of year to visit Champagne?

Champagne is a beautiful wine region to visit year round. However, there are a few times of the year that are particularly good for visiting if you want to avoid crowds and have a more immersive experience: In Spring, between April and June , the vineyards start to come alive after the winter months. The weather is mild, and there are fewer tourists than in the summer. April and May are particularly good months to visit if you want to avoid crowds. During the autumn months of September and October , visiting Champagne is ideal as the grape harvest takes place, and the vineyards are at their most beautiful. The weather is also still mild, and there are fewer tourists than in the summer. In the winter, between November and March , the weather can be cold and snowy but it’s a great time to visit Champagne if you want to avoid crowds and experience the region’s Christmas markets and festivals. Many Champagne houses also offer unique winter experiences, such as champagne tastings by the fireplace.

What should you wear when you visit Champagne?

French style tends to be elegant and understated, so consider packing classic pieces that are both comfortable and stylish. Additionally, many Champagne houses have dress codes for wine tastings, so it’s important to dress modestly and avoid clothing that is too casual or revealing. If you plan to dine at a high-end restaurant or attend a special event, it’s a good idea to pack a few dressier items, such as a cocktail dress or a dress shirt and slacks. When you’re out during the day, wear comfortable shoes. Champagne is a region with plenty of vineyards, historic towns, and cobblestone streets (yikes heels!), so it’s important to wear comfortable shoes that you can walk in for extended periods.

We are bookmarking this article for when we get to Champagne! We are huge fans of the wine and hope to get there soon…thanks for all the terrific recommendations!

I absolutely love Champagne-but my favorite thing (other than visiting small grower-producers I represented in past) it sitting in wine bars and restaurants and getting to choose from sooooo many different Champagnes by the glass! Not just the big guys- give me some steak tartare and a glass of champers and it’s a good day!

I’ve spent time looking at how to plan a trip to visit Champagne and now I have a much better blueprint. This answered all my questions! And OMG the Perching Bar sounds like my idea of Heaven! A Treehouse with Champagne? Are you kidding me? I may go and then never leave.

Every year we visit Champagne Roger-Constant Lemaire in Villers sous Châtillon a family runned business in the Marne valley. They produce excellent award winning champagnes from their 12 hectares. they are open the whole week and we always had a warm welcome. On Sundays they open only in the morning. The Champagne wine region of France is 79 miles east of Paris. It is easy to visit Champagne on a full day trip from Paris . However, to get the most out of the area, spending at least one night is ideal.

Reims is the largest city in the Champagne region of Montagne de Reims and the lovely small town of Epernay is home to the famous Champagne Avenue. Many visitors to the region choose to stay in one of these two towns. There are some great hotels in Reims and lovely hotels in Epernay . There are also many other lovely hotel options in the region, but they will generally require a rental car. 

Trains to the region operate from Gare de L’Est train station in Paris. Trains to Reims are more frequent than trains from Paris to Eperany. There are about 20 trains a day between Paris and Reims and trains between Paris and Epernay run about every three hours. 

Both stations are located in the town centers. Trains run regularly between Reims and Epernay, taking about 30 minutes. A popular option is to stay in the larger city of Reims and take the train to Epernay for the day to experience the famous Avenue de Champagne. 

It takes about one hour and 45 minutes to drive from Paris to the Champagne region, depending on traffic.

There is an airport in Champagne, Châlons Vatry Airport, but it is tiny. The best option is to fly into Charles de Gaulle in Paris and then take the train or hire a car. 

There are 370 champagne houses, over 16,000 growers, and 319 villages in Champagne. The villages in the region are classified as champagne producers. The highest classification is Grand Cru. 

Some of the big houses are located in the city of Reims and the town of Epernay. This includes Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Perrier-Jouet, Taittinger, Pol Roger, Pommery and more. 

There are small producers throughout the region, both inside and outside the villages. It is possible to visit many smaller producers; however, the opening days and hours may vary considerably, and many are only open by appointment.

If this is your first visit to Champagne, I would recommend staying in either Reims or Epernay and visiting the champagne houses in and around these towns.

Once you’ve arrived in Champagne, I am sure you will be keen to visit some of its famous Champagne Houses. The good news is that the easiest way to visit some of the most well-known Champagne Houses is on foot. 

In the town of Reims, the wonderful Charles de Cazanove is less than a 10-minute walk from the station. The other famous champagne houses of Martel, Veuve Clicquot , Pommery , and Taittinger are located near each other, about a 30-minute walk from Reims station. Ubers and taxis are also readily available.

In Epernay, the beginning of the UNESCO World Heritage site Champagne Avenue is about a 10-minute walk from Epernay station. It is a beautiful street and quite a pleasure to walk along. It is also home to some of the best known names in Champagne, including Moet et Chandon and Perrier Jouet.

Taking a tour can be a great way to explore Champagne houses with an expert guide. Several companies offer small group tours in the area with cellar visits and tastings.

It is possible to hire a car to explore the Champagne region but this will of course limit the driver’s ability to taste. 

The houses generally offer a mix of tours and champagne tastings. A visit may cover the champagne production process or involve a cellar tour. All tours will include some type of tasting. 

Many houses also offer a champagne tasting without a tour. The price of the tours and tastings will generally depend on the champagnes being served eg older, more prestigious champagnes in a tasting will result in an increased price as well as the number of different champagnes being tasted.

Most of the top houses require a booking. Some big Champagne houses have bars that are open during the day. However, the most prestigious Champagne houses require visitors to take a tour or a guided tasting to enjoy a glass of champagne. 

It is best to book your tours and tastings ahead of time, particularly during busier times like the weekend. The tour and tasting times tend to be set, so even if there is a slot available, it may not be at a convenient time. 

NB: If you are doing wine tastings in Reims or Epernay you will not see the actual champagne vineyards. The vineyards for the houses are located throughout the region. The vineyards can sometimes be visited on a private tour. 

This question is not easy to answer as there are so many options! I have written dedicated articles on the Champagne houses in Reims and the Champagne houses in Epernay. 

However, if you are in a hurry and it is your first time visiting the Champagne region, here are my recommendations. 

In Reims, I really liked Charles de Cazanove . It is only a 10 minute walk from the station and has tasting options at very reasonable prices. If you can, I would also visit one of the larger houses in Reims, either Veuve Clicquot or Taittinger.  

In Epernay, I really enjoyed visiting Champagne Mercier. They offer a unique experience on a train journey through their cellars, and the tasting and tour prices are very good value. To have the full champagne experience, I would complement this with a visit to either Moet et Chandon or Perrier Jouet. 

Next time you visit Champagne, you can visit the tasting rooms of some of the smaller houses.

NB: Moet et Chandon is the home of Dom Perignon.

NB: The three most common grapes in champagne are pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier. 

When planning your visit to Champagne, France, consider the time of the year and the region’s seasonal variation. One of the best times to visit is during the autumn months of September and October, when the grape harvest takes place and the vineyards are at their most beautiful. The weather is generally mild, allowing for comfortable exploration of the region during this time.

As November approaches, remember that the weather will gradually become cooler. Packing a sweater or two is advisable, as temperatures may require some layering. Despite the cooler temperatures, November can be a pleasant time to visit, thanks to fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Here are a few considerations to help you plan your trip:

• Weather : In October and November, expect mild to cool temperatures, making it advisable to bring appropriate clothing, such as sweaters, scarves, and light jackets.
• Grape Harvest : Visiting during the harvest season (September and October) allows for a unique and picturesque experience, with vibrant colors and bustling vineyards.
• Crowd Levels : Fewer tourists visit during the autumn months, ensuring a more pleasant and less crowded experience overall when touring the region.

It is a good idea to spend at least two nights in Champagne. Even the keenest champagne taster will struggle to visit more than three champagne houses in a day and personally I prefer keeping it to two champagne houses per day. 

Visiting Champagne, France, is a memorable experience. With proper planning and organization, you can focus on enjoying the beautiful vineyards and sampling the delightful beverages.

What’s the best time to visit champagne, france.

It is your choice to make according to personal preferences. Our suggestion is to come between May and October, knowing the summer is a particularly good time to visit the region. Late September is particularly busy as the fall harvest begins, but it’s also nice to witness this wine-making key-step.

How many days are needed to visit Champagne region of France?

If you wish to have a true immersive experience in Champagne, our suggestion is to at least plan a 3-day stay. If however your schedule cannot allow it, 2 days can suffice to already have an enchanted experience in one of the most iconic wine regions of the world, and the only place on earth that produces true Champagne.

Is it better to rent a car to visit Champagne, France?

In case you have a choice: do rent a car . Even if Reims, Epernay and Troyes are easily accessible by train from Paris, being able to drive through vineyards according to what you feel like seeing is a true privilege.

If however you are rather planning a one-day detour in Champagne, than settling in Reims and doing it all by foot and public transportation is already pretty fun and interesting!

Is knowledge of Champagne necessary to visit a Champagne house?

Speaking fluently the wine language is not a requirement to enter Champagne cellar – or any wine-cellar at all! Most wineries speak English in France, along with a variety of other languages.

Nonetheless they kept everything in place and made some modifications so that the trip could take place this October and November. They were always responsive and helpful with our questions and concerns. All of the arrangements they made worked out just as represented. The rental car process was easy (we can't blame them for Paris traffic), and the places they arranged for us to stay as well as the activities arranged were outstanding. We feel we really got a sense of the beauty of France and met some very nice people along the way. The tour book was terrific and very helpful. How to Get to Reims & the Champagne region?

Reims is only a 1hr30 drive east from Paris or CDG Airport. This is a great first or last stop on a French self-drive tour. We do recommend driving to Reims, as this is faster and more convenient than other transportation options.

There is a high-speed train (TGV) that goes there, and although we do not think this to be the best option, it can also be considered. Please be aware however that the TGV station is far outside of town and the car rental agencies are at the downtown train station (regular trains, no TGV). This makes the connections a bit complicated, but manageable with time.

Geography of the Champagne Region

The Champagne vineyards are mostly between Reims and Epernay, which is located 35 minutes south of Reims, so the area is quite small and can be visited in 2 days, including some Champagne winery visits.

Between the 2 cities is the « Montagne de Reims » which culminates at 286 meters and is thus only a « mountain » by name. However, it provides nice slopes for the vineyards and a lovely countryside to drive around.

The whole area was once under the sea and for fossil lovers, we will recommend a place you will always remember.

One thing you need to learn in French: if you say « Je suis interessé par LA Champagne » and « Je suis intéressé par LE Champagne » - you mean something totally different! In the first case, you are talking about the Champagne region and in the second, the sparkling wine... so make sure to brush up on your French a little. In our opinion, both are great to talk about!

What do you eat with Champagne? Biscuits Roses of course!

Of course, it is cheaper to buy Champagne wines right in the production area: you will find good quality bottles starting 20€ - or even around 15-18€ at smaller, less internationally famous wineries.

For those who just want to taste a few Champagnes and get a general overview of the region, we will be happy to recommend a self-drive itinerary where you can get a « bit of everything » and book a visit and tasting in a famous Maison de Champagne such as Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot or Moët & Chandon.

Did you know that the German surrender of World War II was signed in Reims, in the school housing General Eisenhower’s headquarters for the final months of the war? The Musée de la Reddition is fascinating, and you will see the untouched map room and table where the surrender signature took place.

Roman ruins are still visible also, such as the Mars door near the very lively covered market of the lively Boulingrin neighborhood in Reims!

Reims has also one of the biggest Christmas markets in France. 

Where to stay in the Champagne region

The answer is quite simple: between Reims and Epernay . On a Champagne tour, you don’t want to stay north of Reims or you will have to drive around the city every time you want to reach the Champagne vineyards.

Reims is much livelier than Epernay where we recommend strolling the famous Avenue de Champagne on a visit.

We have selected great accommodations in Reims for those who like to be in town, and also some very nice Bed & Breakfasts in the vineyards, in little towns or even in a Champagne winery – to be closer to the local products. A difficult but happy dilemma to have!

What french region is champagne in.

Most of Champagne became part of the French administrative region of Champagne-Ardenne in 1956. This consisted of four French departments: Ardennes, Aube, Marne and Haute-Marne. On January 1st, 2016, 1 January 2016, Champagne-Ardenne merged with the neighboring regions of Alsace and Lorraine, and these became part of the new region of Grand Est.

On our self-drive tours in Champagne, you will be located near Reims, the capital of Champagne, which is about an hour an a half's drive from Paris.

How many regions of Champagne are there?

There are four main regions in Champagne: La Vallée de la Marne, La Montagne de Reims, La Côte des Blancs and La Côte des Bars, including 34,000 hectares of vineyards and around 300 villages and towns. 

La Côte des Bars is furthest south in the Champagne-Ardenne region and has two main sub-regions, Bar-Sur-Seine and Bar-Sur-Aube.

In the north of the region, La Vallée de la Marne, La Montagne de Reims and La Côte des Blancs are the three main territoires, where the best quality grapes are produced. Indeed, many Champagne producers produce the best Champagne by blending grapes from all three of these areas.

One of the things I highly recommend doing before your tour is to read up about the history of champagne . 

Understanding a little about the region and how champagne was invented, adds more to the whole experience.

So, to make things easy, I’m giving you a potted history of my favourite sparkling wine.

The Roman Roots

Before Champagne became the sparkling sensation we know today, the Romans were the first to plant vineyards in this French region. 

However, the wine they produced was still and more of a pale pinkish hue. The Romans laid the groundwork, but the bubbles were yet to come.

The Accidental Fizz

Enter Dom Pérignon, a Benedictine monk who joined the abbey in 1668. Contrary to popular myths, he didn’t invent Champagne. 

In fact, he was trying to eliminate the bubbles, which were considered a defect at the time. 

The bubbles were a result of halted fermentation during the cold winters. When spring arrived, the yeast resumed its activity, leading to the fizz. 

Dom Pérignon worked diligently to improve the quality of the wines, doubling the size of the terroir to 20 hectares and favouring Pinot Noir over other varieties. 

His meticulous methods laid the foundation for the Champagne we enjoy today.

The British Influence

While the French were trying to eliminate the bubbles, the British were embracing them. They even developed stronger glass bottles to withstand the pressure. 

The British market played a significant role in making sparkling Champagne popular.

The Rise of Sparkling Champagne

After the death of Louis XIV, the Duke of Orléans made sparkling Champagne popular among the French nobility. This led to the establishment of renowned Champagne houses like Moët & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot , setting the stage for Champagne’s global acclaim.

The World Wars

The early 20th century was a challenging period for the Champagne region, as it became a battlefield during the World Wars. During the German occupation in World War II, soldiers stole more than 2 million bottles from winemakers in the Champagne region. 

Otto Klaebisch, a Nazi-appointed officer, was put in charge of the region and demanded as many as 400,000 bottles per week for Germany.

But the winemakers got their own back by hiding their best bottles behind secret walls in their cellars or mislabelling them.

François Taittinger of the eponymous house was even jailed for a few days for his insolence when he sent subpar Champagne to the Germans.

Modern Times

Today, Champagne is more than just a drink; it symbolises celebration and luxury.

The region produces over 200 million bottles annually, and its popularity has led to discussions about expanding the production zone to meet the ever-growing demand.

Before you go, I want to share some fun facts about champagne I learned when I visited La Cité du Vin in Bordeaux . If you’ve not been, it’s definitely worth going. Hubby and I spent three hours in there, and I could have spent longer.

It covers wine from around the world and has a fabulous 5 Senses Bar area that was a lot of fun. And that’s where I learned all about how champagne came into being and what makes it my favourite bubbly drink.

Not to mention that Bordeaux is such a great city and less than two hours from Paris.

It’s All About Location: First off, there’s no grape or town named “Champagne.” The name is all about the region in North Eastern France where this bubbly is crafted. So, if it’s not from this specific corner of France, it’s not Champagne. It’s as simple as that!

Exclusive Naming Rights: Speaking of location, only sparkling wine from this particular region can legally be called “Champagne.” Even if a neighbouring French region produces a similar bubbly, they can’t use the prestigious name.

It’s better on the waistline: Good news for the health-conscious! Champagne typically contains fewer calories than red or white wine. A 750ml bottle has around 600 calories. 

Twice as Nice: What sets Champagne apart from other wines is its double fermentation process. The first round gives you a still wine, and the second adds that iconic fizz. 

The Devil’s Wine: In its early days, the pressure inside the champagne bottles was so intense that many would explode. This led to the wine being called ‘ le vin du diable ‘ or ‘ the devil’s wine .’ Modern bottles are designed to withstand this pressure, making them far less devilish!

So now you know the history behind champagne along with some of the fun facts I’ve learned along the way, it’s time for a quick tasting lesson.

Wine tasting , or champagne tasting in this case, is all part of the experience. These quick tips should help and they’re what I’ve learned from some of the champagne tours I’ve been on.

Always hold the glass by the stem. This ensures you don’t warm the champagne with your hand, which could alter its taste.

Take a moment to observe the colour and bubbles. A good champagne will have a consistent stream of tiny bubbles rising to the top.

No 3 The Art of the Aroma

Gently inhale the bouquet of the champagne to take in its complex scent profile. Look for a harmonious blend of fruitiness, nuttiness, and perhaps even a touch of bready richness.
