Going on holiday with your little one means finding the right equipment to make them feel at home, wherever they are. Travel cribs and bassinets give your baby somewhere safe and secure to sleep. This helps them to remain calm and gives you the chance of a peaceful night’s sleep, even when you are on vacation.

There are many to choose from on the market, and below we outline what you should look for and the best options you can buy right now.

Travel cribs and bassinets both provide a cozy, safe sleeping area for your baby, both at home and on vacation. While they both have many uses for parents on the move, there are differences between the 2 options that you should consider before you buy.

What Is a Travel Crib?

A travel crib is a lightweight and portable alternative to the traditional wooden crib your baby may use at home. Designed to be taken anywhere with you, a travel crib has soft sides and a collapsible structure, making it easy to fold up and pack away when in transit.

Made from durable and breathable materials, these kinds of cribs can double up as a safe play space for your little one, both at home and away.

What Is a Travel Bassinet?

A bassinet, on the other hand, is smaller, more compact, and designed to better suit the needs of newborns and very young babies. These safe sleeping areas are perfect for babies who cannot yet sit up unaided and will keep them snug while they sleep close beside you.

Most travel bassinets have soft sides that can be folded up for ease of transport and handles for you to carry. Some can even be used as an inner lining for the bassinet that attaches to your stroller .

Travel Crib

Some hotels may offer to provide you with a crib or bassinet in your bedroom. Vacation apartments or Airbnbs may also have separate infant sleeping facilities, but you will need to check before you book.

However, you may not want to put your baby in a crib that has previously been enjoyed by somebody else, or you may be staying somewhere that doesn’t offer additional facilities.

Whatever your reason for wanting one, here are some compelling reasons why you should indeed use your own travel crib or bassinet on your next trip.

Help Your Baby Sleep Better

Young infants can become very unsettled when they are taken away from their usual routine. Having a travel crib that they use regularly will feel familiar to them , even if they are vacationing with you a long way from home. You can also swaddle them in their favorite blanket or throw in a special toy to help your little one feel relaxed and settled.

They Can Be More Hygienic

If you are taking your own travel crib with you, you know exactly how clean it is before you set your baby down to sleep in it. You can also be sure that you have your own sheet that fits the crib properly or any other special items that your baby likes to sleep with.

You Can Keep a Watchful Eye

Travel cribs have mesh sides that allow you to see your baby as they sleep or play. This means that you can keep a close eye without disturbing them, all the time knowing that they are safely placed in a secure crib on the floor.

Give Your Baby a Safe Space To Play

When you need a moment to yourself, or simply want to give your baby some downtime, your travel crib also makes an excellent playpen . Secure, visible, and always within easy reach, you can pop your baby in the crib with his or her favorite toys and let them play. The crib can be used as a playpen at home, too, making it an even more worthwhile investment.

If your baby is very little, you may want to consider a travel bassinet instead. These lightweight and incredibly portable safe spaces make cozy beds for babies who are not yet on the move. Safer than just laying your baby on your bed, you can keep your baby comfortable and close at hand without worrying about them rolling or falling.

Hot Tip: Like travel cribs, travel-sized bassinets can once again be very useful in your own home. Keep your baby next to you by the sofa, sleeping in the kitchen, or even just as a spare sleep space for taking with you when you visit friends and family.

Not all baby travel cribs and bassinets are the same, so before you invest, consider the following:

Size and Weight

Travel Crib Size

With the focus being on travel, your crib or bassinet needs to be made of lightweight material that can be folded up small enough to carry with you. It will also need to be large enough to comfortably house your baby without them being squished when sleeping. It should also be able to fold down small enough to be able to be stowed away in transit easily.

Materials and Durability

Travel Crib Material

Travel cribs and bassinets are designed to be incredibly lightweight, of course, but they also need to be durable and hard-wearing. With this in mind, most of them are made from high-grade nylon and breathable mesh to withstand the movement of your baby, as well as the bumps and knocks caused by travel.

A travel crib, in particular, will last your baby well into the toddler years, so it will need to be durable enough to go the distance, as well as sturdy enough to withstand opening and closing over long periods.

Your Child’s Age

Travel cribs and bassinets are designed to accommodate babies and toddlers of different heights, weights, and ages. Your bassinet will only suit your baby in the first few months, while your travel crib could be with you for a couple of years.

Check out the best recommendations for your child’s age, weight, and height before you buy , and make sure you know what the maximum age recommendations should be. Be aware that as soon as your toddler can attempt to get out of the travel crib, they are way too big for one.

Hot Tip: Travel cribs may be unsuitable for tall toddlers as they won’t feel comfortable sleeping in a restricted area. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations and measure them against the size of your child before you buy it.

Folding and Portability

Travel Crib Portability

Getting your travel crib upright and locked into position can take a bit of practice, but pretty soon, you will become an absolute expert at it. Making sure you can fold it back down and stash it back in its carry bag will become equally as important, too.

Before you purchase, check out the weight of the crib as well as the folded dimensions to ensure that you will be able to carry it with you on your journey realistically. Better still, if the crib comes with a carry bag that has a strap, you can simply stow it over your shoulder and go!

Safety and Comfort

Travel Crib Comfort

As well as being lightweight, portable, durable, and made to last, your travel crib or bassinet also needs to be proven to be safe for your little one. Check out the reviews and compare different makes and models before you commit, and always settle for the best quality travel crib or bassinet you can afford to buy.

Cheaper models may have very thin mattress bottoms, which may not be comfortable for your baby or toddler. More importantly, they may not be made to withstand the most curious of tiny fingers or the lifetime of assembling and disassembling that your travel crib is required to go through.

Best Travel Bassinet & Portable Baby Bed Options

You may be wondering if travel beds for babies are even necessary when most hotels offer cribs. But if you’re planning on doing a lot of travel, a portable crib or travel bassinet that your baby finds familiar, and feels safe and comfy in, can mean your sleep routine may survive with minimal disruption.

If your baby is older with an established sleep routine, a travel crib that can be set up elsewhere as a second bed might be the right choice. And, if your baby is older and more active, you might be better off with a more sturdy portable toddler bed instead.

But if you’re planning to travel with a newborn or young baby and/or co-sleep, a travel bassinet or portable baby bed might make the most sense and get you greater value for your money.

The Scuddles 3-1 Portable Bassinet is incredibly light at only two pounds and also serves best as a co-sleeping alternative unless you feel comfortable placing baby in in on the floor.

As with the other foldable, portable baby beds, the Scuddles 3-1 Portable Bassinet is best for younger babies who are not yet mobile. Although, with the more generous size, some parents use it as a makeshift playpen for older babies and toddlers.

Portable Baby Bed Koalaty Travel Bassinet Bag

3-in-1 Universal Baby Travel Bag

This is another diaper bag/portable baby bed combo that receives excellent reviews from parents. The 3-in-1 Universal Baby Travel Bag has a different configuration that still offers storage while it’s set up as a travel bassinet for co-sleeping.

It weighs less than four pounds and the sleeping surface is a generous 29 x 13 inches. The reviews indicate that parents are very satisfied with the 3-in-1 Universal Baby Travel Bag as both an actual bag and a portable baby bed.

Travel beds for babies come in all shapes and sizes (and prices!). Consider your needs and budget before deciding which type of baby travel bed you’ll get the most use out of. A portable bassinet that’s suitable for travel can get you through your baby’s first few months, and then you can see if a more traditional travel crib would work or if you should look ahead to a toddler bed for travel .

The 12 best travel bassinet to make your newborn sleep anywhere

Becoming new parents does not mean you can’t visit your friend’s house, go for a picnic, or even travel to a new city and country. We understand the worries of new parents for the comfort of their little ones, especially while sleeping, and we also experienced carrying our babies for hours to keep them safe.

But after standing and looking for a space for tummy time and diaper change, we get too tired, and our baby is not too comfortable. So we took the time to search and finally found our best travel bassinet. Read some of our favorite portable cribs and playards that you can get today or gift to new parents!

Travel Bassinet Reviews

I. travel bassinets for newborns up to 5 months old.

Some new parents want to keep their babies close to them. They would let their babies sleep on them or carry their babies wherever they went to keep them safe. However, doing that for hours can be tiring and may cause some strains on your back and arms.

Do not worry about letting your little ones sleep on a bassinet. Whether you prefer to stay indoors or outdoors, a travel bassinet offers extra convenience and comfort for your newborns up to 5-month-old babies.

We recommend some of the well-known bassinets from Munchkin , Fisher-Price , and LuckyDove . They are small enough for younger babies and for your space too. You can simply carry them wherever you are at the house or in the backyard while gardening. If you are looking for a travel gift for new parents or yourselves, we recommend these bassinets.

#1 Brica Fold ‘n Go Travel Bassinet

travel bassinet owl

The Brica Fold N Go travel bassinet is a travel crib for newborns that provides a secure sleeping place, no matter where you are. The Brica travel bassinet consists of mesh panels and  breathable fabric, and the steel frame  makes it super sturdy.

It takes only a couple of seconds to pop open or fold down. You can easily transport the Brica portable bassinet when closed because it is lightweight (2.5 pounds/1 kg) and comes with a carrying handle.

The 4 points safe T-lock system provides safety and gives you audible clicks, so you know when it has opened completely. Plus, the water-resistant mattress pad is removable and machine washable for this travel bassinet Brica model.

When in use, the dimensions are 29.5″ x 21″ x 12.5″ (75 x 53.3 x 31.8 cm) but the portable baby bassinet folds flat to 22″ x 17″ x 3″ (55.9 x 43.2 x 7.6 cm) .

The Brica Fold ‘n Go can be used for babies from birth to about 4 months/13-15 pounds (6-6.8 kg) .

#2 Fisher-Price On-the-Go Baby Dome

travel bassinet owl

The Fisher Price portable bassinet offers a safe space for your babies while you are doing quick work at the office, gardening outdoors, or hanging out at your friend’s house.

The dome shape makes your baby feel at home and offers more space for tummy time. While having a picnic with the whole family, your baby can feel cozy outdoors with the travel bassinet Fisher Price model’s soft padding and a convenient canopy made with UPF 20 fabric , protecting your baby from the sun and bugs.

The breathable mesh lets you see the baby and keep the baby cool and comfortable. The removable hanging toys from the Fisher Price travel bassinet package also come in bright colors to develop motor skills.

The baby dome is foldable and has handles, too, allowing you to move the crib wherever you want quickly. It is also one of the lightest Fisher Price portable cribs you can get weighing only 5.35 pounds with dimensions of 7″ x 31″ x 21″ when in use.

All varieties are suitable for  0 to 5-month-old babies.  Most parents were happy that their babies were sleeping soundly and comfortably playing while sitting or laying down.

#3 Lucky Dove Bassinet

travel bassinet owl

The Lucky-Dove bassinet is our favorite versatile gift to new parents for its portability, comfort, and safety.

Your baby can sleep soundly with hypoallergenic bumpers, 3U cationic fabric cloth, and an ultra-soft mattress . The 100% polyester fiber mesh provides ample airflow and keeps your baby’s skin healthy from mosquitos while outdoors.

It also has a Safe-T-Lock that keeps the frame up and allows you to store or move the bassinet to another location with just two clicks. Whether on a short airplane trip or long drives, it was easy to open and close.

The bassinet is also  less than 3 lbs and 20.3″ x 19.8″ x 2.6″  portable enough for the railway, airplane, and car trips to your friend’s home, mother’s house, and various locations outdoors and indoors.

You can use it for  babies up to 15 lbs.  When not in use, you can fold it and put it at the back of the car or store it in small spaces. Get the baby’s portable crib as a gift for your friends or yourself.

II. Portable Bassinets for Infants Up to 8 months

Some parents prefer carrying their babies with the  best carriers for toddlers , but after long hours of travel, your back may feel a little bit in pain. Carriers are indeed more convenient to pack and wear, especially when traveling, and we love them too!

If you mostly walk or hike during your travels, a carrier would be the best pick. But when staying indoors or going on picnics, portable bassinets are cozier and safer options than renting an accommodation-provided crib.

#1 Scuddles 3-in-1 Portable Bassinet

travel bassinet owl

The Scuddles baby portable bassinet is a real feature when traveling. It’s not only a travel crib for newborns, but the bassinet can double as a diaper bag and a portable baby changing station as well.

The fabric consists of 60% cotton and 40% polyester, and the mattress pad is machine washable . We always like travel gear that combines features, so we consider the 5 zip compartments (including an insulated pocket to keep bottles hot or cold) a real treat.

No need to drag along a heavy backpack on top! The portable crib is easy to set up, taking only 30 seconds. The outer walls do not collapse thanks to special sticks, making it safe for your baby to sleep in.

When folded as a diaper bag with a shoulder strap, the dimensions are 8″ x 3″ x 8″ (20.3 x 7.6 x 20.3 cm), but the bassinet measures 24″x 12″x 6″ (70 x 30.5 x 15.2 cm) when in use. Though some reviews mentioned dissatisfaction with its small size, it was pretty sturdy and mobile for short walking trips. It also only weighs about 1 pound (0.5 kg).

The Scuddles 3-in-1 portable bassinets are suitable for babies from birth until 6-8 months (when they start crawling).

#2 Lulyboo Baby Lounger To Go

travel bassinet owl

This foldable travel bassinet is the best bassinet for baby. It is safe and cozy and makes sure your bundle of joy is sleeping heavenly all night.

The Lulyboo Baby Lounger To Go bassinet measures 31″ x 18″ x 6″ (78.7 x 45.7 x 15.2 cm) but folds into a backpack o f 15″ x 16″ x 3″ (38 x 40.6 x 7.6 cm) . It weighs 2.9 pounds (1.3 kg), making it a lightweight travel companion.

The cover and pad are 100% cotton, the backing is 100% nylon, and the padding is 100% polyester with a machine washable cover . The bottom layer is also waterproof, perfect for an outdoor crib.

The bassinet comes with detachable toys as well to entertain your baby. You can’t pick it up while your baby is sleeping inside. The Lulyboo Baby Lounger is suitable for babies from birth to about 6 months (more or less 27″ (70 cm) and is available in blue, pink, and beige .

#3 Baby Delight Snuggle Nest XL

travel bassinet owl

The Baby Delight Snuggle Nest provides a safe and enclosed sleeping area for your baby while sleeping in your own bed.

If you are wary of cosleeping with your newborn, this travel crib for newborns provides an excellent alternative. Especially when traveling, your baby might crave your closeness, or you may not have the space to put a more giant bassinet on the bed.

The travel bed bassinet consists of 2 vented and sturdy mesh walls. This way, the snuggle nest gets ventilated, and you don’t have to risk rollovers. The dimensions are perfect for traveling:  28.5″ x 14″ (72.4 x 35.6 cm) when unfolded,  which you can fold into a bag with handle of  16″ x 17″ (40.6 x 43.2 cm).  The  crib only weighs 3.4 pounds (1.5 kg).

The foam mattress is waterproof and comes with a fitted, wraparound sheet. The travel crib comes with a sound & light unit that offers soft light and womb sounds or music. Another feature is the gentle incline wedge.

The Baby Delight Snuggle Nest is suitable for babies from birth to 28 inches (about 6 months) and is available in 8 colors and patterns.   Read more reviews here !

This travel bassinet comes in a traveler version with a more sturdy outdoor fabric and folds into a backpack.

#4 Laluka Diaper Bag Backpack Travel Bassinet

travel bassinet owl

Laluka diaper bag is another family favorite of ours while traveling. It checks the list for diaper changing and baby bassinet.

It looks like your ordinary baby bag, but your baby can now have a personal space for napping by unloading the crib. While unused, you can carry the bag or put it on top of your luggage and turn it into a crib for milk or nap time outdoors or while staying in hotels.

It is the perfect travel companion for babies and parents for its  3.14 lbs weight . The  bassinet only measures ‎17.32″ x 11.42″ x 5.51″  as a travel backpack, available in  black and gray.  Its compact size may not be suitable for bigger or taller babies.

The bassinet fully opens to 28 inches long and 13.4 inches wide, suitable for babies  up to 9 months old . You can safely tuck the removable poles to keep it safe within your baby’s reach, while the mesh windows allow ample airflow from both sides.

III. The Best Travel Bassinets For Toddlers

Is there a bassinet that we can use for a long time? Bassinets are usually for babies up to 12 months old. But recently, we found these multipurpose bassinets that you can turn into a playard and could serve as a bed for toddlers.

#1 Mika Micky

travel bassinet owl

The bedside bassinet may not be what you picture a travel bassinet would look like, but its features may just be ideal for you. Mika Micky keeps you beside your new addition for working parents at home or traveling and staying at hotels.

You can easily attach the crib to your bed using the two fastening straps and 7 height options to suit various bed levels and open the side panel while in bedside mode. The bedside baby bed also comes with bottom support with wheels and breaks, perfect for moving the crib from one room to another.

Mika Micky beside crib may not be foldable, but you can lower the level and place it inside your car, making the baby bedside bassinet a convenient addition for hotel stays and family get-togethers. It is one of the best bassinets for the bed.

The side mesh fabric makes the bassinet baby bed breathable and relaxing for your baby, and the overall materials are safe with ASTM F2194-16e and ASTM F2906-13 certification.

Weighing 33 pounds and dimensions of 36″ x 22″ x 32.7″ , the bassinet by bed may not be the lightest, but the convenience it brings to your baby and to you makes it worthwhile.

It is also strong enough to carry your  5-month-old babies until they can finally stand or reach 33 lbs.

#2 Flisko’s 2 in 1 Travel Crib

travel bassinet owl

Flisko 2in 1 travel crib offers a big, yet compact bassinet for parent’s on the go, and it is one of our top favorites!

The baby bed bassinet has a breathable mesh for proper airflow and peaceful sleep time for your baby. Another feature that allows your baby to have a good sleep is their insulated foam mattress.

If you do not want to purchase a bassinet and a playpen , you can buy the 2 in 1 travel crib instead. You can also turn the crib into a playard for tummy time and crawling. You can easily play with your babies by opening the side zipper.

The size goes to a whopping 28″ x 43″ x 28″ and weighs 14.97 pounds when used, but it becomes as small as a suitcase when folded. Get your own multipurpose travel crib  for 0-3 years old.

Information Guide

What is a travel bassinet.

For new parents, you may have done some research about the necessary items and furniture for your baby’s room. A crib is one of the most common items you should have at home. The small bedstead has a high enclosure to keep older babies from climbing up and has enough air to keep them cool and comfy.

But have you ever heard of a bassinet? Until the age of 6 months old, newborns tend to sleep a lot and try to turn and crawl, and a bassinet provides ample space and comfort for them. A bassinet looks like a crib but is smaller and portable.

They are often in an oval shape with sides made with soft cloth and mesh . Sometimes, they come with hanging toys to promote tummy time and movements for babies.

However, a travel bassinet offers more features like playard, movable toys, and more to provide convenience for you and your little one wherever you go.

Why Do You Need a Travel Bassinet?

A bassinet is small, and you can carry it elsewhere easily, but some of them may not be travel-friendly and could cause inconvenience rather comfort.

We know how scary it is for new parents to just let their babies sleep on any crib or bassinet a hotel offers. Safety is always your number one priority, and you would want your baby to sleep in their own bassinet. Likewise, not all accommodations provide them, and some even come with an extra charge, so better be ready by having one.

If you need to send a quick email in the office, all you need is to set up the travel bassinet beside you. It also comes in handy when having a picnic, gardening, and staying at your parent’s house for a couple of days.

Travel bassinets also come with extra features that may help you save money moving forward, like a bag, diaper changing mats, or a playpen. Recently, travel bassinets we found are foldable to a size of an ordinary suitcase that you can store anywhere in a room and your car.

What are the Features You Should Consider for Your Travel Bassinet?

Like cribs, some travel bassinets come in different sizes and designs. Other products can only take the weight of babies up to 4 months old, while some may have a higher weight capacity. Check the significant factors before adding the bassinet to your online cart and hitting ‘buy.’

Baby Weight Capacity

Some bassinets only come with age recommendations, but we suggest checking the weight capacity. Most bassinets have a limit of 15 to 20 lbs , so give the website or online CS a quick chat for an exact weight number.

Bassinet Weight and Size

Are you the type of parents who love to go backpacking? How about long road trips? These are just some of the questions we asked ourselves when choosing our first travel bassinet.

Travel bassinets are foldable, but some may not come in smaller sizes. Likewise, the materials used can make the bassinets heavy or light . So we suggest choosing a lighter option for air travel and backpacking. For long road travels, you can pick the heavier kind.

Another consideration is your destination. A 2-in-1 travel bassinet and playard may be more comfortable when visiting in-laws or friends’ homes. If you are on the road for a long time or staying in hotels, we suggest smaller kinds.

Assembly Time

When babies want to sleep, they can get cranky, and you would like to set up your bassinets within seconds. Some bassinets nowadays open after releasing two or three locks, and once you hear the clicks, everything is all set up. But others, often the larger ones, may require more than a minute. Practice setting them up at home before the big trip.

Safety and Materials

We only want the best for our sons and daughters and choosing suitable bassinets with safe materials is an extra feature we should always check out. Think about allergies. Sometimes, you can find items with unsafe materials sold online. Yikes!

Start reading more about the fabrics used. Ensure they are not chemically treated . Lastly, they should be breathable and prefer hypoallergenic ones as an extra feature.

Then, check the zipper and velcro placements. Are they easy to open for you? Is it within your little one’s reach? If yes, congratulations! You are almost there to find the best bassinet for your future travels.

The third item is the mesh lining or placement . Luckily, most companies add a mesh enclosure to provide babies with better air circulation and sunlight and prevent mosquitoes from getting in. Finally, check the reviews and details about washing the bassinets. You would want it to be sturdy and easy to wipe with soap.

Bilia Baskets

by Design Dua

Rated 5 out of 5 stars. 33 total votes

Bilia means newborn in Gurenɛ, a dialect attributed to the originators of this craft. Made from elephant grass and dyes, this Moses basket bassinet is beautifully handcrafted for your newborn. They call their bassinets "Nature's Bassinets", as they are completely handmade with dried natural elephant grass. Elephant grass is similar to hardened hay. Each basket takes several days to weave from start to finish. This is a very difficult, completely handwoven craft, as a result, patterns and natural dyeing may vary slightly. Leather handle colors may range slightly within their color groups. The basket is made of all-natural grass, without additives. The basket can become misshapen in transit but can be easily fixed by reshaping.

  • Safety tested for newborn sleep
  • Lightweight
  • It comes with a fitted foam pad, basket liner, and fitted sheet
  • US safety-tested and facility-prepared baby products
  • Made with professionally manufactured leather & steam cleaned

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

long gray escalator in moscow russia

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

group of people walking in moscow red square at night with christmas lights everywhere

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

2018 Primetime Emmy & James Beard Award Winner

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

travel bassinet owl

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

travel bassinet owl

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

travel bassinet owl

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

travel bassinet owl

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

travel bassinet owl

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

travel bassinet owl

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

travel bassinet owl

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

travel bassinet owl

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

travel bassinet owl

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
