Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 86°F) during the day and cool to cold (around 59°F) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family, and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honored tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Believe the hype - Moroccan food is legendary.

Things to try in Morocco

These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive, and citrus are well-known favorites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables, and seasonings.

2. Couscous

Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.

3. Fresh fruit

Morocco has an amazing array of fruit available in the markets, shops, and juice bars. Choose from bananas, mangoes, oranges, avocados, or peaches - eat fresh or get them whipped up in a juice.

4. Mint tea

While traveling through Morocco you'll probably drink more sweet mint tea than ever before. Offered as a gesture of hospitality when visiting someone's home or shop, it's considered impolite to refuse, so accept graciously.

Geography and environment

Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. This combination of desert, woodlands, forest, mountain steppe, and grasslands ensures a wide diversity of flora and fauna lives within the country.

History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilization being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion, and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements, and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

Top places to see in Morocco

1. marrakech.

Things just happen in Marrakech. One moment you're sitting down to a camel burger, the next you're chatting with a snake charmer. The labyrinthine markets are the perfect place to lose yourself but find a Moroccan memento or three.

The endless dunes of the Sahara will call to your inner explorer. Jump on a camel and start riding out over the sandy waves. At sunset, the desert glows rich and red and at night the stars turn the sky crystal.

The desert is calling! Add a  3 day Sahara Mini Adventure  to your Morocco trip itinerary.

3. Essaouira

The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.

Explore this windswept coastal city on our  11 day Premium Morocco Highlights with Essaouira trip,  or make it a quick journey on our  Five Days in Morocco tour.

Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.

5. High Atlas Mountains

The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.

Join a  7 day Mount Toubkal Trek  or a  Mount Toubkal Long Weekend Trek  for those short on time.

6. Todra Gorge

This is a rock climber's heaven or the ideal place for beginners to get a taste. It's a tight squeeze in some places but a sparkling river, the odd palmeraie, Berber villages and high cliff walls make it worth breathing in for.

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

Visit Ait Benhaddou on our  8 day Classic Morocco tour .

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

Rabat is Morocco's lively capital. Its history is long and colorful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates, and more recently the Moroccan parliament. Stroll through the old quarter or enjoy views over the Atlantic Ocean from Kasbah des Oudaias.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognize this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. Set against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

Get a chance to wander around this striking blue city on our  18 day Morocco Encompassed tour .

13. Tangier

The coastal town of Tangier is the gateway between the Mediterranean and Africa. Enjoy fresh seafood by the port, watch the sunset over the Atlantic or visit the Caves of Hercules.

Explore the Gateway to Africa on our  9 day North Morocco Adventure.

Morocco has one of the oldest retail cultures in the world. From bargaining in age-old souqs to swiping your credit card at a modern gallery, it's all possible in Morocco. But to experience brilliant bargains, exciting finds, and a dose of history, you can't go past the souqs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.   Australia   and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Morocco

1. Silver jewelry

Jewelry fiends will love Morocco's affinity with silver jewelry. Chunky rings, elaborate necklaces, and patterned earrings can all be found for great prices, especially if you're willing to haggle.

Save room in your backpack for an iconic silver teapot and some delicate tea glasses. Morocco's silversmiths have this ancient art running through their veins, with centuries of craftsmanship being passed from generation to generation.

The quality (and price) of leather in Morocco is pretty phenomenal. Handcrafted handbags, wallets, belts, and purses can be found in almost every souq around the country.

Festivals and events

Ramadan and eid.

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues, and pop music add a contemporary flavor, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Casablanca Festival

Touted as a 'celebration of all things Moroccan', this annual festival includes local and international music performances, dance, art installations, theatre, workshops, and street parades. This fusion of history and modernity, innovation and tradition is a shining example of what it means to be a citizen of cosmopolitan Casablanca.

We recommend LGBTQIA+ travelers exercise discretion when traveling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travelers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or   ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

What should I wear in Morocco?

While Moroccan days are generally mild-to-hot or hot-and-humid, they can give way to cooler nights – outside of the summer months, anyway. Packing layers and sensible footwear to deal with Morocco's changeable climate, uneven paths and conservative culture is always a good idea.

F emale travelers aren't expected to dress as conservatively as local women, but it’s still a good idea to pack clothing options that will allow you to cover up.

How will I get around Morocco?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Morocco, you may find yourself traveling by:

Board an iconic ‘ship of the desert’ and amble off across desert sands for a quintessential Sahara experience.

Morocco FAQ's

Morocco is a very large country, and most likely people conjure up images of beautiful scenery , ranging from deserts to mountains to beaches . (Maybe some camels thrown in for good measure!) Morocco`s coastline stretches from the Atlantic in the southwest to the Mediterranean in the northeast, and the country`s beaches are known for great surfing and other water sporting opportunities. Likewise, the Atlas Mountains are famed for their welcoming slopes where visitors can enjoy hiking , rock climbing , and skiing opportunities. Morocco is very well-known for its long and colorful history , especially as one of the oldest monarchies in the world . Even before the kings and sultans of Morocco wrote their own chapters of history, the Phoenicians and Romans before them made their marks on the area and their influence today can be seen in ruins such as Volubilis , outside Meknes. One can`t forget the colonial influences and traditions the French, Spanish, and Portuguese brought to Morocco, which are evident in everything from architecture to food . Speaking of food, you must try a Moroccan feast while you are here, with such delicacies as tagine, couscous , and mint tea.

Everyone must take some time to see Morocco`s largest city and the social and cultural epicenter of the Kingdom, Casablanca . Morocco`s imperial tradition -- with its first sultan (king) crowned in the year 789 CE -- cements itself as one of the world`s greatest and oldest dynasties. Visitors to Morocco routinely visit the four ` imperial capitals of Morocco `: captivating Marrakech , beautiful Fez , charming Meknes , and the Kingdom`s current capital, Rabat . Elsewhere, you should definitely visit Tangier and Chefchaouen in the north of the country, and Essaouira and Agadir along the Atlantic coast .

Morocco is a tourist destination that varies widely in terms of geography and weather, so it can be visited most any time of year and travelers should be able to find some corner of the country in which they can enjoy themselves. However, it is recommended to focus on two specific times of year when planning your vacation: spring and autumn . In the spring, the cloudy skies of the rainy season have departed and sunny, blue skies supplant them. You will find that the mountains, fields and countrysides are at their most green and vibrant. In the autumn, temperatures cool to nice, manageable levels, even in the interior of the country. You will also notice hotel prices dropping as summer turns into fall. In the winter, snow is possible in the Atlas Mountains and other high elevations. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit Morocco .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

Morocco is a large country, and even though the infrastructure is growing day-by-day, transportation options like trains are not really feasible if you want to see the entire country. We recommend seeing Morocco by car, namely a private vehicle that will take you to the cities you want to go. By Car/Transfer: It is possible to drive yourself in Morocco if you wish, but when we say it`s good to visit multiple cities by `car`, we mean private transfer. Tripmasters offers private transfer options which allow you to visit many cities across Morocco, with hotel-to-hotel pickup and dropoff in addition to airport pickups/drop-offs. You can rent a car while in Morocco, but considering the driving culture is vastly different from the U.S. or even Europe, and traffic can be alarming in major cities, we recommend that you let the private transfer drivers escort you in air-conditioned comfort from one city to another. By Train: Train service in Morocco is operated by Office National des Chemins de Fer , or ONCF. Rail lines are most prevalent in the north of the country, between Casablanca and Tangier and across the country through Meknes and Fez to Oujda. There is also one high-speed rail line, Al-Boraq , which connects Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat, and Casablanca, and makes the journey from Tangier to Casablanca in two hours, more than halving the old travel time. With that said, we do not recommend traveling by rail in Morocco as a primary means of transportation as many parts of the country, such as Essaouira and Agadir, are not connected to the rail network. Also, if you do want to travel by train, you must buy rail tickets in Morocco ; it is almost impossibly difficult to order train tickets online before leaving on your trip.

The official currency of Morocco is the dirham (abbreviated as dh), which is broken down into 100 centimes. Morocco is a very tourist-centered economy, so hospitality workers are sometimes put in the position of accepting U.S. dollars. When paying for goods and services, however, dirhams are the only currency accepted . However, the final verdict on tipping in U.S. dollars is that people will accept them, but they are not legal tender, and your life will be a lot easier if you just tip in dirhams like locals would do. The easiest way to receive Moroccan dirhams is to visit a bureau de change or ATM upon entering the country. Bureaux de change are available in the airport, at luxury hotels, and at many banks. Banque Commercial du Maroc and Credit du Maroc are two banks that will accept cash advances on Visa and MasterCard. You will get the best exchange rate from these bureaux de change and from ATMs. ATMs typically allow the withdrawal of 2,000 dh (approximately $200) per day from one`s bank account. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Morocco .

The official languages of Morocco are Arabic and Berber. The Moroccan dialect of Arabic is called darija ; it has a different accent and many different words when compared to the standard Arabic dialect of Egypt and the Middle East. Moroccans start to learn English in the seventh grade. It has quickly become a popular language with the younger generation, which tends to watch television from the U.S. and the U.K. with English audio and subtitles in either Arabic or French. 14% of Moroccans can speak English on a conversational level. French was an official language from colonial times until 2000, and as such it is still a very prominent foreign language. You will have more luck if you speak French than finding someone who speaks English. Considered a `prestige language`, French is taught from the earliest grades in Moroccan schools. Over half of Moroccans can speak French fluently, with about an eighth of the population speaking only French. You will find that signs in many public areas are labeled in Arabic and French, with English sometimes being offered and sometimes not. It will be looked upon favorably by locals if you initiate conversation with them in French just as it would in Arabic, even if French is no longer the official language. To ask someone if they speak English, say `Parlez-vous anglais?`

Top points of interest in Morocco

Morocco vacation packages offer a  long list of legendary sights and experiences that justify its position as the most popular destination in Africa. Let’s take a closer look at some of the country’s extraordinary attractions.

Marrakesh is one of four imperial cities or former capitals and a major economic center . The city boasts mosques, the 19th century Bahia palace, and Le Jardin Secret with courtyards, mosaics, and manicured gardens.

Stroll through the medina with its historic district containing narrow streets and fountains. Walk around the walled, old city on our Morocco tours. It’s surrounded by 12 miles (19 km) of pink walls built 900 years ago, once enclosing the entire city.

The core is the Jemaa el Fna square, which buzzes with street food stalls and snake charmers . Within the colorful souks or markets you can find bargains on souvenirs, leather bags, and traditional colorful carpets.

This city near the Algerian border is a great place to kick off your Morocco Sahara desert tours. In the southeast, Merzouga is remote but offers an ideal gateway to the massive expanse of dunes north of the town.

You can take epic desert tours through the Erg Chebbi region by camel or 4X4 vehicle. Experience an overnight stay in luxury tented camps . The region’s proximity to the city means there’s running water and electric power available in several camps.

Chefchaouen

Visit this city in the northwest of the Fir Mountains on our Morocco tours. Called Chaouen for short, this old town is famous for the blue-washed buildings . Also known as the “Blue Pearl” of Africa.

Pop into traditional leather and weaving workshops that you’ll find along the steep, cobbled streets, offering Instagram-friendly photo opportunities. Early mornings are best for taking pics as it’s cooler and less crowded.

The Place Outa el Hammam is a shaded square brimming with restaurants and home to a 15th century kasbah. Spend an hour in this fort with its dungeon and beautiful gardens .

Browse boutiques and bazaars for trinkets, unique clothing, and souvenirs. For stunning views over the city, stroll up to the Spanish mosque . Enjoy a glass of sweet mint tea as you take in the spectacular sunsets on the roof of a nearby cafe. It’s an unforgettable experience.

The second-largest city with over a million inhabitants , Fez is seated in the north west Atlas Mountains and surrounded by hills. It’s a strategic location, within reach of several other important urban centers.

The architecture shows examples of medieval Marinid, Moorish, and Moroccan influences. The two old medina quarters are a World Heritage Site and one of the world’s largest pedestrianized zones . Beyond lies the larger Ville Nouvelle of the French colonial era.

The old-world atmosphere surges through narrow alleyways that wind through vibrant souks and past madrasas, mosques, fountains, and palaces. Fez has legitimate claims to the cultural and spiritual home of the diverse nation, a key stop on our Morocco tours from the US.

More information about Morocco

A  holiday to Morocco  is an adventure into a country of rich landscapes. From its famous fortified villages, better known as  kasbah , its huge ocher-colored dunes of the  Sahara , the green of its large palm groves and high snow-capped mountains, to its labyrinth-like  medinas  and  bazaars .  Below, we show you the reasons why choose a  trip to Morocco  is worth it.

Geography of Morocco

The Kingdom of  Morocco  is located in the northwest of the  African  continent, in the so-called  Maghreb r egion. It borders the  Mediterranean Sea  to the north,  Algeria  to the East, the  Sahrawi Arab Republic  to the south and the  Atlantic Ocean  to the west. The capital is  Rabat,  but the most populated city is the famously immortalized  Casablanca.

Morocco’s  almost  36 million  inhabitants are distributed in the  16 regions  in which the country is divided. These, in turn, are subdivided into  27 prefectures  and  45 provinces.   Arabs  and  Berbers  represent the majority of the population, although there is also an important  Jewish  community.

The country has two major mountain systems: the  Rif , which borders the  Mediterranean  coast, from the  Muluya River  to the  Strait of Gibraltar  and whose highest peak is  Mount Tidighine  at  2452  metres; and the  Atlas  mountain range, a must visit on any  tour to Morocco , formed of three mountainous massifs: the  Great Atlas  to the south, where the highest mountain in the country is found, the  Central   Atlas  and the  Anti Atlas  that reaches out to the  Atlantic  coast.

Between the  Rif  and the  Central Atlas  stretches the valley of  Sebú.  To the east of the country are the  High Plateaus a nd to the south the great desert of the  Sahara.  The most important rivers are the  Oum-er-Rbia  and the  Sebú,  which flow into the  Atlantic  and the  Muluya , which flows into the  Mediterranean.

The official language is  Arabic  whilst the  Berber  languages of  Tarifit, Tashelhit  and  Tamazight,  are spoken in the  Souss , the  Rif  and the  Atlas.  Most Moroccans speak  French , which is used commercially and there is also a small  Spanish -speaking population.

Islam  is the official religion and  98.3  percent of the population is  Sunni Muslim,  with the king being the highest authority.

The country is a constitutional monarchy with an elected Parliament.  King Mohamed VI  holds broad executive powers and directs military forces.

In the economic context, income comes from services, agriculture, and the mining industry, phosphate, food, leather, textiles, and tourism, with infrastructures prepared to accommodate countless organized travel options and package holidays, from upscale resorts to cozy  medina riads.

The climate varies between the desert of the south, the  Mediterranean  of the north and the continental of the interior, with temperatures ranging between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius, although in certain areas of the country it can occasionally reach up to 50 degrees.

The flora of  Morocco  is one of the richest in North Africa with some  4200  species. It is the country with the largest forests in the  Maghreb,  which contain cork oaks, holm oaks, conifers, junipers, cedars, firs, pines, argan, thorns, while in the arid zones there are  date palms . As for the wildlife, there are foxes, rabbits, otters, squirrels, gazelles, wild boars, baboons, panthers, ibis hermits, and horned vipers.

History of Morocco

Morocco is an ancient nation and as such, it has a long and fascinating history. The human presence in the territory dates from the year  8000 BC . Since then, a long list of communities has left their marks on the land. Fishermen and breeders of Saharan horses arrived around  2500 BC,  joining the indigenous populations .  At the end of  800 BC,   Phoenicians  and  Africans  arrived from the East and the  Romans  eventually invaded in the  4th century BC . Continuous challenges and rebellions on the part of the  Berbers  towards the  Roman Empire  resulted in the expulsion of  Romans  in the  5th century .  Vandals, Visigoths , and  Byzantines  succeeded the  Romans,  although the lands of the high mountains were always dominated by the  Berbers.

In the  7th century , the indigenous  Berbers, Jews,  and  Christian  converts, were aware of the new religion founded by  Mohammed bin Abu Talib,  the prophet  Muhammad , who revealed that there is only one God and that believers share the common duty of submitting to his divine will. Following his death, in the year  632 ,  Islam  spread to central  Asia  and western  Africa.

The  Umayyad  leader  Uqba bin Nafi  reached the  Atlantic  coast of  Morocco  in  682  but failed to break the  Berbers . It took time and compatibility with the concepts put forward by  Muhammad , which emphasized the duty, courage, and loyalty of the group, which led to the conversion of many in  Morocco  to  Islam . Through diplomacy, the  Umayyads  managed to impose themselves in the country in the  8th century,  although in the middle of the century they were exiled and the new leaders dominated the trade of silver, gold, and slaves.

In the year  786  the descendant of Muhammad,  Idris I,  fled to  Morocco , was appointed imam or religious leader by the  Berbers,  unified the north of the country and converted  Fez  into the capital. Their descendants expanded the power of the dynasty in the north of the country and part of  Europe .

Meanwhile in the south, a detractor prophet established an illegitimate  Islam , and the behavior of the military in the area, caused a dissatisfaction that led to the emergence of the  Sanhajas,  a  Berber  tribe of tenacious warriors from the Sahara, who created the dynasty of the  Almoravids  with its capital in Marrakech, which was later razed by the  Almohad Berbers  in  1147 , ending with the power falling into the hands of the successors of  Emir Ben Ali Ben Youssef.

The  Almohad  defeat came in  1269  at the hands of the  Berbers  who established the  Benimerin  dynasty, during which  madrasas  were built in the important cities and whose empire was devastated by the plague and by the continued assassinations of the leaders at the hands of their advisers. From  1420,  the  Wattasíes  began to exercise control and in  1465  the  last Sultan Merinid Abd al-Haqq  was killed. In spite of everything, they were not able to consolidate their power, as the  Portuguese  possessed dominion over the main ports of the country by the beginning of the  16th century .  Melilla  was conquered by the  Spaniards  in  1497.  The  Berber Saadians  of the  Draa Valley  fought against the  Lusos,  restoring internal trade and  European  markets which supplied sugar, ivory, gold, and slaves.  The Saadian dynasty  ruled the south until  1554  and the entire territory until the death of  Sultan Ahmad el Abbas  in  1659 . The indulgent nature of the  Alaouite Kingdom  allowed  Jews  to demarcate their own neighborhoods or  mellah  in several of the cities.

The sixth Sa'did Sultan,  Ahmad I al-Mansur,  was the most famous of the dynasty. He built the great palace of  Marrakech  and participated in alliances with  Christian  economies until his death in  1603 . The  civil war  of 1620 to 1627 led to the fall of the  Saadians  and the arrival of  Alawites,  descendants of the illustrious  Muhammad . The reign of the second ruler,  Mulay Ismail , was based on despotism and cruelty, and the capital was moved to Meknes. The  Alawi  dynasty lasted until the  twentieth century.

France  allied with the  Berbers  around  1830  and  Spain  took over some northern cities such as  Ceuta . In  1880 ,  Europeans  and  Americans  established duty-free trade in  Tangier . Under the Sultanate, the  Algeciras Conference  was held in  1906 , in which it was agreed to hand over the management of banks, customs and  Moroccan  policy to  France  and with the  Treaty of Fez  in  1912 , the country became a  French protectorate.

In  1944,  the  Independence Party  demanded the end of the  French  mandate with the support of the  United States  and the  United Kingdom .  France  allowed the king to return to his country in  1955  and independence was achieved in  1956.

The dissatisfaction of  Moroccan  society for inequality between rich and poor and tax burdens, together with half political unrest, led to large protests in  Casablanca  in  1981 , to which the Government responded with violent repression that resulted in deaths and imprisonment. But popular activist pressures led the king to found the  Equity and Reconciliation Commission  with the aim of investigating the human rights abuses that occurred during his reign. His successor since  1999  and until today,  Mohammed VI , guaranteed the repair of the damage caused to the victims of the so-called  "Years of Lead"  by means of indemnities. The monarch has made great democratic changes, but the  Casablanca  attacks of  2003  resulted in the deduction of some civil liberties.

The traces of a past of emperors, warriors, viziers, sultans, and settlers, has created a social fabric that surprises the gaze of the western traveler. A  tour to Morocco  is the best way to gain insight into the complex history of this country.

Why is Morocco Africa’s most visited country?

The light falls on  Morocco  in a unique way, so that the colors warmth and harmony of the landscapes are unlike those seen anywhere else. From the pure and exciting tones of nature, infinite color combinations are born with which towns and cities have integrated themselves.

Morocco  exhibits pure life, showing itself in all its splendor amidst the bustle of its busy and nocturnal streets and squares. Away from the noise, the deafening silence of the desert, a treasure of the country, is where you can experience the most exciting adventures.

A package holiday to Morocco  will give you the opportunity to experience many things, from finding yourself lost in labyrinthine  medinas ; counting millions of stars in the cold nights of the desert; entering the arid landscapes of mountain ranges; smelling the aroma of  mint tea  and spices; admiring the iconic  belly dance ; being captivated by the majestic architecture of arches, stuccos, mosaics and carved wood of the imposing monuments to listening to the eternal call to prayer.

Morocco  is the pearl of  North Africa  and the jewel of the  Arab  world.  Morocco  is not a mirage, it is a fantastically real illusion.

Follow the route of a thousand kasbahs to the Dades Valley, where green oases and mudbrick homes are strewn across the dusty pink valley. We’ll travel into the Sahara to see the brilliant desert sunset and meet the local Berber tribesmen, before spending the night surrounded by the spectacular Atlas Mountains.

Wander around Fez

Connect with the symbolic heart of Morocco in Fez, the oldest imperial city in the country. Our Local Specialists will take you on a journey to the medina, one of the world’s largest thriving medieval centres, and you can see the royal palace, roam the vibrant alleyways, or relax in an ornate courtyard.

Our top 5 things to do in Morocco

Our Morocco holiday packages delve into the vivid culture of the country, with visits to a traditional tannery, the souks of Marrakesh, and the Berber villages of the Sahara.

Dar Si Said

Housed in a 19th century palace, Dar Si Said is a fantastic folklore museum in Marrakesh. You’ll discover Islamic architecture and artisan craftwork, including an Andalusian fountain basin that’s more than 1,000 years old. It’s also surrounded by several courtyards and gardens where you’ll find ornate stucco, tiled mosaics and carved wooden ceilings.

A former royal palace converted into a museum in 1915, Dar Batha was the first museum in Morocco. The beautiful building now contains around 6,000 collections of zellige tiles, embroidery, jewellery, coins, carved wood, carpets and a large collection of the famous cobalt-blue ceramics of Fez.

Mohammed VI Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art

Located in Rabat, this museum of contemporary and modern art contains an excellent collection of Moroccon and international art. It’s housed in a gleaming white building inspired by Arab-Moorish architecture, and you can see the works of 200 Moroccan artists including Ahmed Yacoubi and Hassan Hajjaj.

Best museums in Morocco

Our Morocco guided tours will reveal the country’s vivid culture and history through its museums, including a museum of Moroccan art and a former royal palace.

Tagine has been part of Moroccan culture for hundreds of years. It’s a delicious stew-like dish made of slow-cooked meat, like chicken or fish, and vegetables or fruit. The dish is named after the North African clay or ceramic pot in which the dish is cooked.

Also known as sikuk or seksu, couscous is the beloved national food of Morocco. It’s a dish of steamed balls of crushed semolina, flavoured with herbs and spices, and served with meats and vegetables. Most Moroccan families eat couscous on Fridays, although you can sample this tasty dish any day of the week.

Fish Chermoula

Chermoula is a thick relish or marinade, used as the foundation of many Moroccan dishes. It’s made with a variety of herbs and spices like cumin, paprika, parsley and pepper, and is classically used to flavor fish and seafood dishes, such as fried sardines and fish tagine.

What to pack for Morocco

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Morocco, the standard voltage is 220 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type C and E. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Modest clothing

When visiting Morocco, you’ll need to wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Bring light, loose clothes for the heat and warm layers for chilly desert nights.

A scarf is useful for everyone as it keeps the sun and sand off your face, while women can use it to cover their head when visiting mosques.

Slip-on sandals

In Morocco, you’ll need comfortable sandals that you can easily slip off when entering homes, hammams and some traditional restaurants.

Sunscreen & sunglasses

The sun can be intense in Morocco, so protect your eyes with UV-protected sunglasses and your skin with SPF 30 or higher.

What an amazing tour. If you want to experience a little bit of the Moroccan rural areas, book! It was exactly what we wanted to experience. An authentic and eye-opening market, with wonderful views & a day spent with Malika & her beautiful family cooking a Tajine. Our guide Zakaria was wonderful, prompt, knowledgeable, and charming. He had a great rapport with Malika and the family, which made the tour even better.  I highly recommend this traditional and authentic experience. It was a day of my travels I will always cherish.

Thank you again Zakaria & Malika

Super knowledgeable. Gave people their undivided attention. Took us through the sukes, market, spice shop, defiantly shared a lot of history and gave us pointers about being a tourist in Merrakesh ( how to cross the street and negotiating in the sukes). It was the best decision I made to book this tour before venturing off on my own with my teenager. It was his first time traveling abroad so our tour made my son feel comfortable.

The tour was great! Jonas was excellent at showing us all the places worth seeing in Marrakech. Also, he gave us very useful information regarding history, culture, food, architecture, and where to eat or go afterward. I completely recommend the experience!
