Personally, we loved running the Malecón with our dog, Kramer, every morning during our stay in Loreto. We'd run the pathway a couple of times to get in anywhere from 2-5 miles and then we'd conclude by walking on the beach and letting Kramer cool off in the Sea of Cortez. It was the perfect way to start a day in Loreto and one of our absolute favorite ways to soak up this city's rhythms amongst the locals.

Go diving in the Sea of Cortez

You can take diving lessons in La Paz but you must be 18 or older. If you do intend to take diving lessons while in La Paz, be sure to book your stay for long enough to take lessons and enjoy your new skill afterwards.

If you're up for a bit of adventure, we'd highly recommend visiting La Picazon . While this restaurant is about 25 miles out of town down a dirt road, the view, food, and margaritas make it worth the trip! This family owned and operated restaurant serves up some of the best seafood around and the customer service and experience are wonderful. Definitely our best dinner splurge during our time in Baja so far!

Currency accepted: Bring cash! While La Picazon does accept credit cards, the day we were visiting the card reader was unavailable so go prepared with cash and be sure to tip!

Note: You'll want to be sure to have a vehicle that can get down a dirt road. While the road isn't horribly difficult or technical, it is bumpy and a bit sandy. If you're unsure if your own vehicle can make the drive, most taxi drivers will feel comfortable getting you there. Just be sure you pay to have your taxi driver wait for you during dinner because you're unlikely to catch another cab from the middle of nowhere.

When we were visiting Loreto we were there for a jazz festival that was fundraising for underprivileged children. The live music along with the vendors selling food and gifts was a fun night. We even had the chance to watch a local dance school perform traditional Mexican dances on another stage across from the Mission.

As far as golf, there is a golf course called Danzante Bay Golf Course, which is located in the Loreto Bay National Marine Park. The course was designed by Rees Jones, an 18-hole, par-72 course. The course offers spectacular views of the Sea of Cortez and the surrounding mountains. The course is open to visitors and residents of Loreto. It is considered one of the best golf courses in Mexico.

Is Loreto Mexico Safe?

Loreto, Mexico is quite safe, and as you explore the town, you’ll feel remarkably safe wherever you find yourself. There are plenty of statistics to back up that Loreto is among the safest places to visit in Mexico.

As a solo female traveler, I felt completely safe exploring Loreto on my own, even walking on well-light streets at night by myself (though that’s perhaps not the best recommendation, no matter where you’re traveling). It’s a destination I’d highly recommend to any female traveler.

Even travelers with an idea of everything there is to do in Loreto will be pleasantly surprised by just how much Loreto has to offer; you could stay for up to a week without getting bored. Baja California Sur is a world-class whale-watching destination, with multiple species of whales migrating to the Sea of Cortez every year. Whale watching season starts in December, but travel to Loreto from mid-January through March to enjoy the height of the whale watching season and for the best chances to enjoy the experience. Whale watching is by far one of the best reasons for visiting Loreto.

Hotel Oasis – $

Located on the widest and most impressive beach in downtown Loreto, Hotel Oasis has long been the place to be in Loreto, with many guests coming back year after year for decades. Rooms are basic but comfortable, with the biggest draw being the expansive patio out front, slung with hammocks and mere inches away from the sand.

The beach barbeque buffet every Saturday at Hotel Oasis is incredibly popular, including freshly roasted local chocolate clams cooked in a traditional way: underneath the beach sands. Show up early (5:00 PM sharp!) to watch the clams cook and take in the sunset with a drink in hand. It’s a culinary experience even those who aren’t staying here won’t want to miss.

Posada de las Flores – $$

Located in the heart of Loreto’s central square, Posada de las Flores is just a few decades old though with its charm it feels like it’s been around forever. Simple but comfortable rooms are packed with character, from handmade tiles in the bathrooms to antique furnishing throughout. The hotel’s restaurant, facing the heart of the plaza, serves some of the best food in town.

Just three blocks from the malecón oceanfront promenade along a tranquil pedestrian-only stretch, Posada de las Flores is easily walkable to everything in town. Its location means that it can get a bit loud, especially on weekends when the town square is the place to be, and church bells end late at night and start early in the morning. If you’re a light sleeper, come prepared with earplugs.

Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto – $$$

The one true beach resort in Loreto is Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto , located about 40 minutes south of town along a dramatic stretch of coastline at Playa Ensenada Blanca. If you’re looking for nothing but rest and relaxation, with all the amenities you could ever want from a beach vacation, this is surely the place to be.

The resort features an impressive 18-hole golf course, the award-winning Sabila Spa featuring over 75 unique treatments, and plenty of space to spread out, with five pools and four restaurants to choose from. The resort offers both room-only bookings and all-inclusive plans.

While the resort is removed from town, its beachfront location at the foothills of the dramatic mountainous Baja desert makes it a great spot for adventurous activities. Best Places to Eat in Loreto

From super-simply taco stands to more upscale dining options, Loreto has a surprisingly impressive array of places to eat. These are the ones we kept coming back to and the ones we didn’t stop hearing about from the locals we met along the way:

Orlando’s

If there’s any restaurant you’ll want to return to day after day during your stay Loreto, it’s Orlando’s . Just two blocks away from Loreto’s central square, serves up generous portions of Mexican classics. Affordable prices and a lovely vibe in the outdoor dining room just add to the experience, making it an easy favorite in town. I would have come back again and again if I could have.

Breakfast at Orlando’s is quite popular here, with giant servings of chilaquiles and enfrijoladas being a highlight of the menu. Whether you visit for brunch or any other time of day, you’ll always find it busy and buzzing with locals and visitors alike.

Few places in seafood-obsessed Loreto do the classics as well as Baja Mar . What started as a popular local food truck has graduated to a permanent location along the malecón, serving up everything from aguachile and sashimi to ceviche and the freshest of catches.

A basic interior lets the food shine, though most will want to sit on the patio, with its oceanfront views along the malecón oceanfront promenade. Make sure to order a michelada with your meal; they’re as over-the-top as they come.

Restaurante Oasis

The restaurant at Hotel Oasis shines any day of the week, but the Saturday evening beach barbeque buffet is the real reason to visit. Show up at 5:00 PM to see how the chef cooks Loreto’s famous chocolate clams in a traditional style, beneath a raging fire and underneath the sands of the beach.

Offering everything from freshly grilled seafood to barbeque ribs and chicken bursting with flavor and with oceanfront seating, it’s a meal you’ll dream of long after it’s over.

If you’re skeptical that a cafe in the heart of Loreto’s central plaza could be worth a visit, don’t be – Cafe Olé has long been a favorite. You’ll see locals lining up for coffee as soon as the cafe opens, with patrons spilling out into the cafe’s patio to enjoy meals from morning to evening. Reasonable prices and generous portions make Cafe Olé a universal favorite.

Getting to Loreto

Loreto’s international airport, located just ten minutes outside of town, makes it easier than ever to get to Loreto, whether you’re traveling from another corner of Mexico or from abroad. No need to drive 4+ hours from La Paz or even further; check out flights directly to Loreto to avoid the long distances between other cities in Baja California Sur .

Loreto International Airport currently receives one daily flight by American Airlines from Phoneix; American Airlines also connects Loreto and Dallas. Alaska Airlines connects Loreto with cities in California, including Los Angeles and San Francisco.

La Paz to Loreto

The nearest large city to Loreto is La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur. The drive between La Paz and Loreto takes about four hours, making it too long for a day trip but totally doable if you’re planning to stay for a few days.

Buses connect Loreto and La Paz but take longer than driving in a private car: the ride is about six hours, and tickets cost $30-$50. Several bus companies operate the route, and the buses are comfortable and air-conditioned.

Alternatively, renting a car and driving yourself makes for a much more comfortable journey, as does scheduling a taxi or driver.

Los Cabos to Loreto

If you’re flying into Baja California Sur via the airport in Los Cabos, the journey to Loreto will be longer, just over six hours if traveling by car. This distance makes it worth considering looking into connecting flights directly into Loreto.

The journey is longer by bus; the Aguila bus line makes the trip from Los Cabos to Loreto in about 9 hours, with tickets costing around $80 USD for the ride.

When you think of the Baja region of Mexico, Cabo probably comes to mind.  But Baja is so much more than that.  It’s home to a number of lesser known yet stunningly beautiful destinations… including Loreto!

Originally a small fishing town, Loreto has become known for its natural beauty, abundant wildlife and multitude of outdoor activities.

About Loreto

Loreto has been designated a Pueblo Magico (which means magical town ) by Mexico’s tourism board. Pueblo Magicos are recognized for their “magical” qualities like rich history, original architecture, natural beauty and unique culture.

Founded in 1697, Loreto is known for its beautiful and historic missions.  The town was the first Spanish colonial city on the Baja peninsula and is home to Franciscan missionary buildings and colonial architecture. 

Along with its fascinating history, Loreto Bay has its own nationally protected marine park in the Sea of Cortez.  This area was once called “the world’s aquarium” by marine explorer Jacques Cousteau because of its rich marine biodiversity.

Dolphins, whales, sea turtles and hundreds of species of fish and birds call the area home. And, it’s one of the few places in the world to to see whale sharks up close!

On top of all the incredible wildlife you can spot in Loreto Bay, the beaches and islands are filled with spectacular natural beauty.  Think crystal clear waters that look more like the Maldives than Mexico! 

Where is Loreto + How to Get There

Located on the Gulf of California in Baja California Sur, Loreto is about a 6 hour drive north of Cabo.  The drive is safe to do and could be a great idea if you plan to do a larger road trip through Baja (you could also visit Todos Santos and La Paz!). 

If you’d rather fly (I don’t blame you!), there are some great direct flight options from the US.  Direct flights to Loreto Mexico are available from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, Dallas and Tijuana (convenient if you live in San Diego!). 

Plus, Calafia Airlines (a Mexican regional airline) offers flights from La Paz so you could visit both beautiful coastal towns on the Sea of Cortez in one trip.

We flew direct from Los Angeles and the flight was just 2 hours.  And, the Loreto Mexico airport is small and conveniently located close to downtown making it a quick travel day.

The Best Time to Visit Loreto

The best time to visit Loreto depends on what you’re interested in doing.  From beach hopping to whale watching to fishing, there are tons of things to do in Loreto at different times of the year.  Let’s break it down!

Best Time for Whale Watching

Whale watching season is the beginning of each year from January through March when blue, grey and and humpback whales migrate south to breed.  Whale sharks can be seen in the area from October through February so if swimming with a whale shark is on your bucket list, this is when you’ll want to visit!

Best Time for the Beach, Swimming & Fishing

With summer temperatures reaching into the 90s, June through September is the perfect time to hit the beach and take a dip in the sea.  Also, these are some of the best fishing months in Loreto Mexico for catching dorado, marlin and tuna.

During the winter months, Loreto Mexico weather sees temperatures in the mid 70s making it an ideal time to enjoy activities on land like hiking or golfing.

How Many Days Do You Need in Loreto?

Coming from southern California, Loreto was an easy long weekend destination! 

I spent 3 full days in Loreto and felt like it was a great introduction to the town.  One day was spent enjoying the beach, one day was spent golfing and exploring the town and the last day was spent on a boat!  It was the perfect amount of time for my first trip and I’m already excited to go back and check out a few other places in the area.

If you’re traveling with a family or group and want to rent a house for a relaxing beach vacation then of course you may want to stay longer!  There are plenty of activities to keep you busy, especially if you have avid golfers, fishermen or nature lovers in your group.

What Kinds of Travelers Does Loreto Get?

Loreto sees a lot of travelers from the US and Canada to visit for nature watching, golfing and fishing.  

Loreto is home to a renowned golf course, TPC Danzante Bay.  TPC — which stands for Tournament Players Club — means that a golf course is part of a prestigious network of golf courses around the world… so this is definitely a bucket list course!

As for fishing, the Sea of Cortez is a renowned fishing spot so many sport-fishing lovers travel to this region to hire a fishing charter off the coast.

Are you a nature lover? If so, you may be interested to learn that National Geographic offers expeditions in the area to observe the marine life and diverse landscapes! 

I was surprised to learn this when we were boarding our flight to Loreto in LA — an entire tour group for National Geographic was on our flight!

And lastly, there is a growing US and Canadian expat community living in Loreto Mexico.  There are a couple of communities mostly filled with retirees.  Being a warm, beautiful and inexpensive place to live makes this region of Baja a great retirement spot!

Is Loreto Safe?

You may be wondering… is Loreto Mexico safe?  This is often one of the first questions people ask when they hear about an unknown place in Mexico.

After reading up on this, I found there isn’t much crime in Loreto as it’s mostly a sleepy fishing town and hasn’t become a major tourist destination yet..  Plus, you won’t find a nightlife or party scene like you’d see in Cabo San Lucas.

While visiting, I felt very safe everywhere I went including walking around downtown Loreto at night.  All of the locals we met were incredibly friendly and happy to give us recommendations on things to do in the area.

That being said, always use common sense and practice basic safety rules when traveling!

How to Get Around Loreto

The best way to get around Loreto is to rent a car.  This will ensure you will be able explore all the different beaches, missions and sights the area has to see.  

I didn’t rent a car and ended up regretting it as our hotel was quite a ways outside of town and the taxis definitely started to add up!  I typically get nervous driving in foreign destinations but I feel it would have been very easy to navigate as it’s a small town and the roads aren’t too crowded.

The downtown area is small and can easily be explored on foot. If you stay in the downtown area, I would check with your hotel about their parking situation.

Where to Stay in Loreto

Wondering what the best hotels in Loreto Mexico are?  While Loreto does have a range in lodging for different budgets, don’t expect tons of large luxury resort chains like in you see in Cabo!  Most of the hotels in this region are small bed and breakfast style hotels or budget inns.  No matter what your preference is, there are definitely a few standout places to stay in Loreto Mexico!

• Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto : This is where I stayed as my boyfriend was interested in playing at their golf course, TPC Danzante Bay.  It’s a large resort with an all-inclusive option and is a great choice for golfers, families and groups.  They also had their own private beach and beach bar which we loved.  Just note that it’s about a 30 minute drive into town so a bit tricky if you don’t have a rental car (like us!)
• Posada de las Flores Loreto : Beautiful hotel that features gorgeous colonial Mexican decor, a charming courtyard and a rooftop swimming pool overlooking the Sea of Cortez. It’s very centrally located right in downtown.  This is where I’d love to stay on my next trip!
• La Mision Loreto : Another great hotel option that is centrally located in Loreto with views of the Sea of Cortez and a swimming pool.
• Hotel Rosarito : Located minutes from downtown, Hotel Rosarito features a swimming pool, air conditioning and friendly staff — all at a great price point. 

Where to Dine in Loreto

The dining scene is casual yet delicious with a focus on fresh seafood (don’t miss trying Baja’s renowned chocolate clams!).  Here are some of the best restaurants in Loreto to try on your trip!

• Mi Loreto : This charming restaurant serves upscale fare in a romantic setting beneath the town’s mission.  We loved the margaritas, friendly service and live guitarist taking song requests. It felt like a nice restaurant you’d find in Cabo but at half of the price!
• Taqueria Don Pedro: This casual taqueria is popular with locals and tourists alike.  I have a street taco obsession and these totally hit the spot!  They are also known for their stuffed baked potato (“papa rellena”).
• Orlando’s : Another popular dinner spot in town is the lively Orlando’s.  With traditional dishes from all over Mexico, colorful outdoor setting and attentive service, you won’t want to miss dining here for dinner one night.  
• Danzante : If you’re staying at the Villa del Palmar resort, this fine dining restaurant is definitely worth checking out.  I was very impressed with the quality of food, romantic ambience and fantastic staff!
• Asadero Super Burro : In the mood for tacos, burritos or quesadillas? This is your spot!  They are known for their oversized steak burritos… yum!
• El Zopilote : If you’re looking for a break from Mexican food, this restaurant in the main plaza serves pub food (think pizzas, burgers, etc.) and craft beers on tap.  It’s a popular spot with the ex-pat community in the area!
• Mare Lindo Marquesitas : Marquesitas are a tasty Mexican street snack and this mobile street cart can be found on the streets of downtown around dinner time.  A treat typically found in the Yucatan area, marquesitas are an interesting mix of savory and sweet!

Things to do in Loreto 

With its beautiful natural landscapes, marine life and outdoor activities, there are so many things to do in Loreto!

Whale Watching

Given that the Sea of Cortez is famed for its marine wildlife, going whale watching should be high on your list of things to do in Loreto!  Each year, a number of whale species (including blue, grey, sperm, and humpback!) migrate here.

During my trip in March, I was able to see a blue whale — the largest animal on earth!  Seeing this majestic animal up close was incredibly moving.  

Visit the Islands of Loreto

This was my absolute favorite activity I did on this trip!

The Islands of Loreto are made up of five islands: Danzante, Carmen, Coronado, Montserrat, and Santa Catalina. We spent a day exploring Danzante and Carmen islands, both of which were absolutely breathtaking.

Since we were staying at Villa del Palmar, we chose to tour Danzante and Carmen islands on our boat day since they were much closer. But on my next trip, visiting Coronado island is at the top of my list! Our boat captain said that if we were amazed at the incredibly clear waters on Carmen island, we would be absolutely blown away by Coronado Island as well.

See the Natural Arch on Danzante Island

This beautiful natural arch on Danzante island reminded me a bit of the natural arches in Cabo. Our boat captain called it “La Ventana” which translates to the window… a name that totally suits it as you get a beautiful view looking through the arch!

Spot the Blue-footed Boobies

I’ve always wanted to visit the Galapagos Islands which is where it’s common to see blue-footed boobies. Well, I had no idea you could spot them in Baja as well… We saw a few on our boat trip around the Islands of Loreto!

Explore Downtown Loreto

It’s easy to spend a couple of hours exploring downtown Loreto Mexico on foot! Don’t miss visiting the historic Loreto Mission or the Malecon for a walk on the waterfront. Even if you aren’t staying downtown, this is where most of the dining is so you’ll likely wind up here during your stay!

San Javier Mission

Speaking of missions, the San Javier Mission Loreto is the most well-known in the area as it’s one of the most charming and well-maintained. About a 50 minute drive through the scenic mountains of Sierra de la Giganta, I didn’t get a chance to visit on my trip but I hear that San Javier Mission is worth the trip and it’s going to be top of the list of things to do in Loreto on my next visit.

With a world-class golf course at TPC Danzante Bay and another local favorite, Loreto Bay Golf Course, in the downtown area, there are several opportunities for golfing in area. Most golf travelers opt to stay at Villa del Palmar to play their famous TPC Danzante Bay Course where the cliffside 17th hole is sure to take your breath away!

While most of Baja is arid desert, Mulege is a lush, tropical oasis surrounding the Mulege River. While this small town is a few hours’ drive, it’s an interesting alternative landscape to explore in Baja! There are plenty of outdoor activities you can do here like hiking, fishing and kayaking. Plus, the beautiful beaches at Bahía Concepción are just a short drive away!

What to Pack for Loreto

If you plan to do a boat day or hit the beaches, having a dry bag on hand is essential for keeping your phone, wallet and other items safe and dry.

Summers can be very hot! If you plan to do any outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, boating or just lounging at the beach, having a cooler bag can be super helpful for keeping your drinks and food cool.

Active Sandals

There are quite a few hiking trails near beaches so having a pair of active sandals can come in handy so you don’t have to worry about getting your sneakers wet and sandy.

Hats Sun protection is so important for those hot sunny days when there’s little shade… especially if you plan to do any outdoor activities like golfing or hiking. Make sure to pack a few different hat options!

And of course, be sure to protect your skin with lots of sunscreen. I love this one as it has clean ingredients and is reef friendly!

Beach Blanket / Towel

I love these beach blanket towels because they are quick dry and sand shakes right off. Plus, this one folds up very compactly making it perfect for travel.

Not very many places on the west coast of North America have water as clear as the islands in the Sea of Cortez… so it’s a great opportunity to snorkel. Especially given all of the incredible marine life in the area —like the majestic whale sharks!

Depending on the time of year you visit, the water can be pretty chilly. If you plan to paddle board or might be in the water at all, I’d recommend bringing a wetsuit jacket or rash guard.

If you are planning a trip to Baja California Sur, you shouldn’t miss a visit to the pretty Pueblo Magico Loreto. In this post, I am going to share all the amazing things to do in Loreto Mexico in different seasons.

Loreto is among those hidden gems of Mexico that you don’t hear about much. But it’s also one of the most gorgeous towns on Baja California Sur’s eastern coast.

The unique thing about Loreto isn’t only that it’s one of the most charming places in Mexico, but also that it is a paradise for nature lovers, with so many things to do and explore!

Since Loreto is praised for its well-preserved natural environment, it’s one of the rare places where you will experience some of the best Mexico natural wonders , without all the fuss caused by overdevelopment.

Combined with the fact that it was one of the first towns of the New Spain settlement, founded by Jesuit missionaries in 1697, the historical charm of Loreto is unparalleled.

Another reason Loreto is such a sublime destination is its coastline by the Sea of Cortez. You can’t find a better place to explore The Aquarium of the World (so it was named by Jacques Cousteau ) than this!

1. stroll in the historical center for a glimpse of its colonial charm.

Taking in the vibe of the town is definitely one of the first things you should do when you arrive in Loreto.

Since Loreto is filled with charming views not only because it’s surrounded by nature, but also because of the historical buildings and monuments dating back centuries, taking a walk in its center ( centro ) is one of the best things to do here.

It isn’t very big, so you can easily go for a stroll and see everything around it, but it still has plenty of interesting places to check out!

You can start with the first-ever mission in a town called Nuestra Senora de Loreto . Right next to it is the city museum where you will find more interesting things related to the history of Loreto.

There are also tons of art shops, and also my friend’s bookshop, that you can check out here.

Top off your walk with a cup of coffee in one of the charming cafes in the central plaza, or go for a walk on the seaside promenade (called the Malecon) for a peaceful atmosphere complemented with stunning views, especially at sunset and sunrise.

While you’re at it, why not take your exploration of Loreto’s historic origins one step further? You will love the Mission of San Javier for a number of reasons.

To begin with, it’s in a cute little village in the middle of a rocky desert. Then there are all the amazing sceneries to accompany you on the way leading to the village.

3. Dive in the Sea of Cortez

I mentioned Loreto’s natural wealth earlier, and the Sea of Cortez is mainly the reason why. It’s home to thousands of aquatic species, and Loreto is where the marine life of The Aquarium of the World really flourishes.

The entire Loreto Bay area is a protected national park known for its amazing efforts in preserving the natural environment of its waters.

There are lots of divings sites in the Loreto Bay area to take you on a memorable tour in the Sea of Cortez.

I haven’t been on a diving tour yet, because the last time I was there, the cold temperature of the water ended up being a bit off-putting despite the prospect of seeing spectacular creatures of the sea.

But it’s on my bucket list and I highly recommend it to you as well! Keep in mind that winter the water is cold but it’s the time when you can see the whales.

If you are serious about diving you should consider joining a Liveaboard trip in the sea of Cortes and enjoy spectacular divings non stop.

4. Spend a day on the stunning beaches in Loreto

Loreto beaches are very attractive. So much so that anyone who visits them falls in love with the stunning views and amazing watersports offered here.

The top beaches in Loreto include Nopolo Beach and El Juncalito , but I recommend checking out a few more as well by driving along the coast each one with its own charm and stunning views.

5. Try your hand at kayaking and paddleboarding

You can make your beach day even more fun by adding some paddleboarding into the mix. The activity is quite famous here. So much so that some hotels have paddle boards that their guests can use.

But even if your hotel doesn’t have them, you can always get them from an equipment rental shop.

The kayaking scene here is also just as vibrant, if not more. You can sign up for a full-day kayaking tour with the agencies in Loreto, and if that’s not good enough, there are also multi day tour options including camping on the nearby islands as well!

There’s just one thing I would like to mention here. Please be mindful of marine life and avoid harming the environment while you’re kayaking.

It’ll ensure both the preservation of the amazing creatures in the water and a fun experience for you.

6. Go on a Blue whale-watching tour

Speaking of the marine life that the Sea of Cortez is known for, the thousands of fish species that live here include the largest mammals in the world and you can take a tour to see them in person!

Blue whales swim along the Baja coasts all the way to Loreto Bay every year between January and March where you get some of the best whale watching in Mexico if you want to see blue whales.

To go see them, all you need to do is join one of the whale-watching tours offered in Loreto.

The tour includes taking a boat to Isla del Carmen. Once there, all you need to do is silently wait for the blue whales to show up.

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and if you’re lucky, you might also get to see lots of dolphins before getting to the bay where the whales live.

7. Visit UNESCO Heritage site Coronado Island

Among the islands scattered around Loreto Bay, Coronado Island is the most popular and a UNESCO heritage site.

It’s also easier to get there because the tours organized by the local agencies are more frequent.

Another other islands is Isla Danzante where it’s easier to go on a private boat tour which local travel agencies can easily organize for you.

Isla del Carmen is one of the three main islands you can visit to see the wildlife they’re famous for. The Blue whale tour goes in fact there but you won’t step on the island.

The islands have their own coasts with lots of dolphins, sea lions, and other amazing creatures living in the waters that you can snorkel with.

You can visit these islands either with an organized tour or simply by asking one of the fishermen at the Marina to take you, not before having agreed on the price.

8. Go hiking in the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range

Sierra de la Giganta is the most famous mountain range in Baja California.

It extends from La Paz all the way north, changing its name to Sierra de Guadalupe up from the Municipality of Mulege.

From enormous rock formations to heavenly oases, the mountain range has lots of mind-blowing wonders of nature in it.

If you’re up for a hike and want to go explore these, Loreto is a great place to start. This tour will take you to the Tabor Canyon one of the most spectacular situated within the Sierra De la Giganta mountain range.

9. Witness the breathtaking sunrise from the Malecon

Remember the promenade from your idyllic walk in the centro? The Malecon offers great views and a lovely ambiance throughout the day, but it’s a completely different experience to watch the sun rise from here.

Arriving here early one morning was one of the best things that happened to me in Loreto. Watching the golden sunrise above the expansive waters was mesmerizing.

This is definitely one of those experiences that you shouldn’t miss out on during your stay in Loreto.

10. Explore the ancient cave paintings

One of the less-known facts about Baja California Sur are its awe-inspiring cave paintings found all across the mountain ranges here.

One such site is very close to Loreto, just a few minutes on the road from Loreto to San Javier.

If you’re fascinated by remnants of an ancient world, you will definitely love a glance at these cave paintings left by the nomadic Cochimí people of the region.

12. Play golf

Loreto has one of the most premium golfing experiences to offer for all the golf lovers out there.           

One of its best 18-hole courses is the Loreto Bay Golf Resort and Spa, where you can enjoy both golf and the breathtaking scenery of the mountain ranges and the ocean. Highly recommended if you’re into the sport.

13. Hit the road for a day-trip to Bahia Concepcion

Loreto beaches are spectacular but only a handful, so if you want to explore even more beaches, I recommend taking a drive to the Bahia Conception bay for it. The drive is only 30 kilometers from Loreto, and the road is perfect.

14. Check out Mulege historical town

Mulege is a pretty and often underrated historical town on the eastern coast of Baja California north of Loreto at about 2-hour drive, which is why I suggest renting a car as I will explain further on in this post.

The road trip is full of incredible postcard-worthy views, which is why a 2-hour drive can become 4 if you keep pulling over like I used to.

I would suggest staying in Mulege for a couple of nights if you have the time and exploring the surrounding.

The coast is lined with spectacular bays where you can stop and ask for short boat trips to explore the multiple islettes and small bays that you wouldn’t be able to reach from the road.

Mulege itself offers a lot to explore, from the old Mision Santa Rosalia de Mulege to hiking trails and spectacular views of the river with its wealth of wildlife.

15. Go kiss the gray whales in San Carlos or Adolfo Lopez Mateos

You can either continue driving north of Mulege to San Carlos or take another road trip south of Loreto to Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos (my favorite being the latter) where you can take incredible boat tours to watch the grey whales.

These funny and graceful creatures will come close to the boat and let you pet them, they actually love to play hide and seek with the boat and love to follow the motor noise.

The tours are done in full respect of the whale’s habits and environment.

How to get to loreto mexico, where exactly is loreto located.

As I mentioned earlier, Loreto is part of the Baja California Sur Peninsula in Mexico. Its exact location is around 508 kilometers north of Cabo San Lucas , on the easter coast of the Peninsula, and right by the Sea of Cortez.

Flights to Loreto, Mexico

It’s true that Loreto has a lot of old-world charm to offer because it’s not been overdeveloped like some other famous destinations in Mexico, but that doesn’t mean it’s completely isolated.

In fact, there are direct flights to the city.

If you’re coming here from the US, you’ll find nonstop flights to and from Los Angeles with Alaska Airlines. If you’re already in Mexico, Calafia Airlines offers domestic flights to Loreto.

Going to Loreto on a bus

Taking a bus to Loreto has become a good option recently, and it’s definitely one of the ways to get here. You can hop on a bus to Loreto from La Paz , Todos Santos, and Los Cabos.

However, I must warn you that the journey can be tiring, because it takes 6-10 hours to get to Loreto by bus depending on where you’re coming from.

If you consider that by car is only 4 hours 30 minutes from La Paz and 5 hours from Todos Santos, by bus is really a long journey.

Going to Loreto by car

I used a car rental to get around when I was in Baja California, so it’s my recommended choice for Loreto as well.

The roads everywhere are neat, there are plenty of parking spaces with no fees, and driving to all the destinations of the Baja Peninsula is pretty straightforward.

Plus, I got to enjoy so many stunning views that I would’ve missed out on otherwise!

Other than that, there are only a few things that you should be aware of and your trip will be smooth.

✅ First, make sure your car rental is covered with insurance. Your credit might cover it, but not all of them do in Mexico, so double-check beforehand, and if needed, get insurance from the car rental company.

✅ Second, you have to be alert while driving on the roads of Baja California. The roads are spotless, but chances are that you might encounter goats or cows in the middle of them suddenly, which can be dangerous if you’re distracted by the sublime scenery.

But it shouldn’t be such a big issue, just drive slow and stay focused.

✅ Last but not least, it’s always good to have your gas tank refilled whenever you get the chance to. Although there are plenty of stations on the roads, the journeys can be long and you can never be too careful.

✅ For extra security when you want to take a picture pull over and get out of the car but keep the door open or take the keys with you just in case you lock it inside ( it happened to me ones and it’s not fun!)

Moving around Loreto Mexico

The town of Loreto is relatively small and it’s pleasant to walk around. However, you will need a car if you want to explore the surrounding beaches because there is no public transportation to take you around.

So unless you are planning to hire a driver or a guide, having your own car is the best option.

You can still take your day tours to explore the missions or to go hiking because it’s always nice and safe to have a guide showing you around.

I stayed in an Airbnb during my trip to Loreto, but I did check out some hotels there, so here are a few suggestions from those.

Posada de las Flores Loreto

Posada de las Flores is the first hotel that pops in mind when it comes to lodgings in Loreto. Its location is right by the main square in the center.

Then there’s the fact that it’s a renovated Colonial building featuring authentic Mexican art in all its indoor spaces.

There is a courtyard in the hotel that all of its rooms are centered around. The rooms have upscale furnishings and the rooftop terrace offers great views. It’s one of the best places to stay in Loreto.

Hotel Santa Fe

Hotel Santa Fe is a mid-range lodging option in Loreto with stylish studios on offer. The rooms are neat and spacious, and there is an on-site restaurant and a pool as well.

Since the hotel is located right on the main road, you have lots of cafes, restaurants, and tourist attractions nearby along with a laid-back atmosphere.

Hotel La Mision de Loreto

La Mision de Loreto is an oceanfront luxury hotel with one of the most upscale lodgings and amenities in town. The hotel features modern facilities inside a Colonial-style building. You can book elegant 1- and 2-room suites with terraces overlooking the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range here.

Hotel Bugambilia suite

If you’re looking for a place on a budget but cozy and decent, you can’t go wrong with Hotel Bugambilia. It’s a beautiful property with great rooms, friendly staff, and value-for-money facilities.

Located in the main road of Loreto, it’s surrounded by plenty of restaurants and attractions nearby, and the hotel has secure parking for the guests as well.

Loreto Bay Golf Resort and Spa

Loreto Bay Golf Resort and Spa is another luxurious hotel in the city with upscale lodgings. Located 10 kilometers from Loreto, the hotel actually falls within the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range, and it’s an oceanfront property so that’s another plus.

The rooms include all the modern amenities and balconies with oceanfront views, and the suites add jacuzzis and iPod docks.

Apart from elegant lodgings, you have access to an outdoor plunge pool, spa, sports bar, and a tennis court as well.

Where to eat in Loreto BC?

I mostly made my own meals during my stay in Loreto both the times I went there, so I haven’t had a lot of experience with the restaurants in town.

However, since I’m recommending a few good places to eat out, I asked some of my friends there about their favorites to find the best ones. Here they are.

1. Playa Blanca restaurant

If you’re craving seafood, there is a restaurant called Playa Blanca . It’s located next to the church in the center, so the surroundings are definitely charming, and the atmosphere of the restaurant itself is also pretty nice.

2. La Picazon

The Gulf of California has some stunning views to offer. La Picazon is the restaurant to double the fun of this unforgettable experience because you get to enjoy the views with some of the most delicious food in Loreto here!

3. Mi Loreto

Loreto is full of authentic Mexican charm and cultural heritage, so it won’t be a good idea to miss out on traditional food while you’re here. Mi Loreto is the restaurant for it.

4. Mezzaluna

Also, I must admit that I did go out for some delicious pizza and empanadas during my stay in Loreto. Restaurante Mezzaluna is where I went, and I highly recommend it to you as well.

THINGS TO DO IN LORETO – MEXICO

Is loreto safe to travel to.

Definitely. I’m a female solo traveler and I have been to Loreto twice and stayed there for a while with no issues at all. On the contrary, I felt very safe.

The entire city is very sublime and welcoming natives and expatriates are creating a very nice community.

Since it’s a small number of people, everyone has a strong sense of community, so that’s another reason Loreto is so peaceful.

Just don’t forget some common safety rules and you will be perfectly fine in Loreto.

These include not leaving your belongings unattended wherever you go, not flaunting your money and other valuable items, and avoiding being careless.

I’m sure these are precautions you’re already familiar with, so you don’t have to worry about much.

When is the best time to travel to Loreto

All year round is a great time to travel to Loreto as you can see from the temperature graphic here below.

Winter is a great time to go to Loreto Mexico because you can see the whales and hiking is not so bad because of the bearable temperatures.

But the water is very cold, so if you love to snorkel or dive wear a thick wetsuit

Summer is hotter and more humid and the perfect time to dive, swim and snorkel but remember there are no whales to watch. Hiking becomes a bit of a challenge for the heat but still doable!

What to wear in Loreto Mexico?

Usually, some casual outfits will suffice for your trip to Loreto. Of course, packing a couple of formal ones won’t hurt, especially if you’re staying in a fancy hotel or planning on attending upscale events.

Since Loreto is surrounded by a desert, it’s no surprise that the temperatures here go high in the day and plummet during the night.

Your casual outfit will suffice for daytime, but a windbreaker wouldn’t hurt for the nights and chilly mornings. Also, some eco-friendly sunscreen and a hat wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

If you plan on snorkeling and swimming a lot, having your own snorkeling gear is one option.

But even if you rent it, make sure to get a wetsuit as well, because the water can be cold during winter months.

And, as I mentioned in the things to do, hiking is one of the attractions here, so pack some hiking boots , pants, and layers for the lower temperatures of the canyons if you plan on hitting some trails.

23 Best things to do in Loreto, Mexico

1. visit the loreto mission and museum.

Officially called the Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó (Mission of our Lady Loreto), this was the first mission established by the Jesuits on the Baja Peninsula.

Started by Juan María de Salvatierra in 1697, the Jesuits wanted to evangelise to the native Monqui peoples.

Considered the ‘mother of all the missions of the Californias’, it set the tone for future Spanish conquest around the region. And served as a base for further mission developments both north and south of Loreto.

Today the mission operates as a catholic church, open to the public.

It is free to go inside and admire the building, but don’t interrupt a service, and please dress appropriately.

Next door is the Museo de las Misiones de Baja California (Museum of the Missions of Baja California).

At the time of writing, the entry is 70 MXN (around $4 USD).

The small exhibition shares the history of the Jesuits and the missions of the Californias. There are maps, artefacts and images, with Spanish and English translations.

2. Explore Loreto’s historic centre

Loreto is a charming little town, and despite having plenty of beautiful natural attractions outside the city, be sure to allocate some time to wander around the centre.

From colourful buildings, plazas filled with families and tree-lined pedestrian streets there is plenty to see in Loreto centro.

The centre of the city is the large  Plaza Civica , home to the cute  Loreto Town Hall  building and a space for different events and festivities.

The plaza is bordered by cafes and restaurants with alfresco dining, and it’s the perfect spot to have a coffee in the sunshine and do some people-watching. La Route served up amazing coffee.

A beautiful street lined with an archway of trees leads you to the  Loreto Mission .

Adjacent to the mission is another small plaza,  Plaza de las Californias . And be sure to walk down the  Andador Salvatierra , a pedestrian-only street that connects all these sights.

There are countless cobblestone streets branching out from the main plaza in all directions. Don’t be afraid to walk aimlessly and see what you can find.

We loved the palm trees growing in vacant lots, beautiful entryways and colourful walls perfect for a photo!

3. Walk the Malecon

One of the essential things to do in Loreto is strolling along the Malecon.

This seaside boardwalk is not particularly long at just 1.6 km / 1 mi. But it offers a beautiful place to walk with some incredible ocean views.

We love it when coastal towns in Mexico have a malecon. They are always a hub of life and Loreto’s is no exception.

You’ll find people going for a run, families pushing strollers, tourists snapping photos and plenty of streetside vendors selling food and wares.

Along the Malecon, you will spot the typical Mexican colourful letters spelling out Loreto, a statue of the mighty blue whale, and the marina where boats depart for tours to the islands.

The road running adjacent to the Malecon is lined with palm trees, and there are a ton of hotels and restaurants if you want to stop for a meal or drink.

We loved El Caloron , an affordable seafood restaurant on the upper floor of a building across the road from the Malecon.

4. Hike Tabor Canyon

The first thing you notice when you arrive in Loreto is the mountains.

The city is surrounded by the red-toned, rocky cliffs of the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range and they are just begging to be explored!

One of the best hikes you can do (and one of the best things to do in Loreto in our opinion!) is  Tabor Canyon .

This hike was one of the most beautiful walks we did in Baja California Sur (maybe even in all of Mexico!), and we were absolutely blown away by the landscapes.

The trailhead is around 20 minutes from the centre of town. The hike is an out-and-back trail, listed on  AllTrails  as a 1.3 km return track. But we walked much longer than this, and you can basically go as far as you like into the canyon and turn around when you get tired.

You follow a dry riverbed that inclines into the canyon, and the hike involves lots of hopping across rocks and boulders. We didn’t find it too intense.

However, it is important to note that after about a kilometre, you can only continue by rock climbing (literally) with three different sets of ropes. You need to crawl through some small spaces and haul yourself up with the ropes.

We had a blast, but it may be a challenge for some.

If you’re wary about following the trail or navigating the rope climbing there are some amazing local guides that will lead you on the trail. Plus, they can give you a lot of information about local flora and fauna that we might have missed out on.

Furthermore, if you don’t have your own car to get to the trailhead and are going to need to arrange a taxi anyway, I would suggest a guided tour is the best option.  This tour has fantastic reviews.

5. Visit the islands in the Loreto Bay National Park

Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto, or Loreto Bay National Park, is a large protected marine area off the coast of Loreto in the Sea of Cortez.

Declared a national park in 1996, the area is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The waters are rich with marine life of all shapes and sizes. A number of whale species, sea lions, dolphins, rays, turtles, an abundance of fish and small critters call the park home.

The protected bay is home to five uninhabited islands:

• Isla Coronado
• Isla del Carmen
• Isla Danzante
• Isla Montserrat
• Isla Santa Catarina

There are many different ways to experience the Loreto Bay National Park, and chances are, you’ll visit the area more than once on your trip.

It’s common to do island tours, where you’ll spend a few hours on land. Isla Coronado is the most popular island to visit, and I’ll share more about this below.

Snorkelling or scuba diving are more popular activities, and I’ll touch on each of these below.

It’s also possible to do island-hopping combo tours, where you’ll spend the day mainly enjoying the bay from a boat, looking for marine life, snorkelling and possibly exploring some of the islands on foot.

This tour is a great combination that gives you a great taste of the bay and a fun day on the water, on board a catamaran.

6. Spend the day at Isla Coronado

One of the best things to do in Loreto Mexico is to visit one of the islands in the bay. Isla Coronado , although one of the smaller islands, is the most popular choice.

It’s the closest island and offers some absolutely stunning beaches and transparent blue waters. It was one of the most beautiful beaches we saw in all of Mexico (almost as good as Balandra!) !

Although there is a range of tours on offer that combine a visit to the islands with activities like snorkelling, kayaking etc. the most traditional option would be a half-day island tour.

A local boatman will take you across to the island, stopping to see dolphins, sea lions and blue-footed boobies along the way.

If the conditions are right, you have the chance to jump in and snorkel with the sea lions.

They will drop you off on the island for an agreed amount of time (2-3 hours), and you are free to relax on the beach, swim and snorkel, or explore some of the walking trails.

The captain will return at the agreed time to pick you up and return to the mainland.

We organised a tour directly with a local guy at the marina.

There are plenty of people approaching you on the Malecon offering trips to the island. And whilst we would usually advise against booking with these kinds of salespeople, in Loreto, it is actually the best way to do it.

There is a cooperative of local fishermen who also run tours, and there is always someone allocated to the Malecon area to approach tourists and coordinate bookings.

Just be sure to agree on a price, and find out exactly what is included. We paid 800 Pesos per person (around $45 USD).

7. Go snorkelling in the Loreto Bay National Park

While many island tours include a side of snorkelling, if you’re really interested in discovering the underwater world in Loreto Bay, it’s best to take a tour focused on snorkelling.

Blue Nation Baja , the top dive shop in Loreto, also offers snorkelling island tours. Given their expertise in the bay and experience with diving, they are the best people to take you snorkelling!

They offer a range of different tours, each one focusing on a different island. You can take your pick depending on the type of marine environment and life you’re hoping to see.

Their website is a great resource with a ton of info about each tour option.

8. Go blue whale watching

There aren’t too many places you can encounter the largest animal in the world, but Loreto is one of them.

From around February – March each year, the mighty  blue whale  congregates in the calm waters of Loreto Bay.

There are a number of different tour operators in Loreto that offer whale-watching experiences, but most are pretty similar.

They usually depart in the morning, and you will spend approximately four hours in the area of the bay where the whales are known to be hanging around.

Due to their sheer size, blue whales aren’t acrobatic like humpback whales , and they aren’t interactive like grey whales .

But what is so impressive about these guys is their enormity! Even just seeing a sliver of their back as they arch out of the water, you can gauge how huge these creatures are.

We were very impressed with our tour with  Loreto Sea and Land Tours . We had a marine biologist on board who shared a lot of valuable and interesting information about the whales, and lunch was included on the boat.

Seeing the largest animal in the world is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the best things to do in Loreto if you’re visiting at the right time of year.

9. San Javier Mission

Formally Misión San Francisco Javier de Viggé-Biaundó, but locally referred to as San Javier Mission. Another Jesuit mission, the site is a very important piece of the history of Loreto.

After developing the first mission in Loreto town, the Jesuits realised they would not be able to sustain life there without access to any fresh water.

Being in the desert, Loreto is incredibly dry and the modern-day city set on the coast does not have any freshwater sources.

So the Jesuits headed inland in search of water and found a large oasis that became the site for the San Javier Mission.

The mission is just under one hour’s drive from Loreto. You will follow a long winding road through the mountains with the most incredible views.

The road is paved but can be narrow at times and the curves through the mountains are intense, so be sure to concentrate hard!

There is no public transport here, so you will need your  own car , a taxi, or to book an  organised tour like this one .

Entry to the mission is free.

Inside the building isn’t anything special, but the setting in the middle of the desert, next to the oasis is spectacular. Seeing this style of architecture in what effectively feels like the middle of nowhere was special.

For a small donation, you can wander out the back of the mission to see the first olive tree planted by the Jesuits in all of North America over 300 years ago.

The tiny town of San Javier has developed around the mission, and its cobblestone streets are gorgeous, and the area is lush with palm trees growing around the oasis.

There is free parking in front of the mission, and a few small local restaurants.

Most blogs give these restaurants a bad review, but we had a delicious meal here at La Palapa .

We tried machaca, a traditional Baja dish. Consisting of dried beef or pork flavoured with onions, chillies, tomatoes and peppers, usually served in burritos with refried beans and a soft cheese sprinkled on top – yum!

10. Laze on one of the Loreto beaches

Whilst the best Loreto beach is located on Isla Coronado, there are plenty of mainland beaches worth visiting too.

You won’t find the powdery white sand of the islands, but the Loreto beaches around town are generally quiet and peaceful, with stunning views of the bay and Sierra de la Giganta mountains.

🚗 Rent a car to drive yourself to all the Loreto beaches

Here are some of our favourites:

• Playa La Darsena – this is the main beach in town, just north of the marina. The sand is grey and coarse, but there are free palapas lined up, and the water is generally very calm. Not the prettiest, but a very convenient option.
• Playa La Negrita – a natural continuation of Playa La Darsena to the north, we loved walking along this long beach. There are also free palapas lined up here too.
• Playa Oasis – south of the Malecon in front of Hotel Oasis, this beach is partly private for the hotel. Still with plenty of room for visitors, with the benefit of a restaurant and beach bar to use!  It has the same dark, grey sand but the waters are calm. Look for birds at the estuary at the end of the beach.
• Playa Juncalito – about 20 minutes south of Loreto, this is a gorgeous sheltered bay with clear waters, great snorkelling and soft sand. Avoid the weekends and you’ll most likely have the beach to yourself.
• Playa Ligüi – a very quiet and remote beach used mainly by local fishermen and campers. 30 minutes drive from Loreto. It has beautiful views out to the islands and calm waters. BYO shade, snacks and drinks.

11. Hike Mesquite Canyon

We didn’t get around to this hike on our first visit to Loreto, and I’m absolutely shattered! Tabor Canyon was such an amazing hike, I wish we found the time to do this one too. Oh well, next time!

Cañon Mesquite (Mesquite Canyon) is another stunning hike through a desert canyon. This one is a bit more technical, as a lot of the trail passes through pools full of water.

Depending on the season, these pools can be higher than chest height, and swimming is required.

It’s possible to navigate the hike yourself, following this route on AllTrails . There are plenty of helpful reviews from other hikers to help guide you.

Alternatively, given the complexity of the hike with water involved, it would be a good idea to go with a local guide who knows the route.

12. Go kayaking or paddle boarding in Loreto Bay

The calm waters of Loreto Bay are the perfect spot for stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking.

If you’re keen on paddleboarding, you have two main rental options.

You can rent a board from the centre of town, and paddle around there with views of Isla Coronado and Isla Carmen. Try Sea Kayak Baja Mexico for rentals in this area. 

Alternatively, you can head south of the city to Marina Puerto Escondido and rent a board there. You’ll be paddling with close views of Isla Carmen and Isla Danzante. Outpost Charters offers rentals here.

If you’d prefer to kayak, they are stabler and will get you a little further. For a casual paddle, you can try the same rental options as above in their respective areas.

However, it is possible to do some more intense kayaking out to and around the islands of Loreto Bay.

13. Have a multi-day kayak and camping expedition

For an epic adventure in Loreto, you can do a multi-day kayaking and camping experience around the islands.

This is at the top of my bucket list when we return to Loreto Mexico.

There are a range of different options available, depending on your kayaking skills and desired levels of difficulty.

I really love the offerings of Sea Kayak Baja Mexico . They can help you plan a multi-day experience to one or more of the islands, including all the gear rental. They transport you, the gear, and the kayaks out to the islands on a boat, so you don’t actually have to do the long, hard paddle across the bay.

Sea Kayak Adventures  is another great company offering a more intensive, all-inclusive guided kayak tour for 3-6 days.

14. Scuba dive in the Sea of Cortez

Jacques Cousteau labelled the Sea of Cortez ‘the world’s aquarium’, and he was not wrong. The waters around Loreto are teeming with marine life of all shapes and sizes.

Since the area is a national park, it has been protected and conserved from problems such as overfishing and pollution.

The best way to experience Loreto’s underwater world is to go scuba diving.

There are many dive sites around the bay. What you see will depend on the conditions, the site, and the season but there is a range of creatures big and small in the bay.

In addition to many different varieties of fish, you have the chance to swim alongside sea lions, rays and maybe even whales at the right time of the year.

15. See ancient cave paintings

Being one of the first inhabited areas of the Baja Peninsula, Loreto has a rich pre-Jesuit history.

Indigenous tribes left an amazing account of their lives in the form of paintings in caves and on the desert canyon walls. You have to hike through the desert to see the ancient art.

Best explored with a local guide to translate and explain the paintings and history of these people, this is one of the best things to do in Loreto Mexico if you’re a history buff.

16. Bird watching at the Las Garzas estuary 

At the southern end of town near Playa Oasis (in front of Hotel Oasis) is the Estero Las Gazas , or Heron Estuary.

At low tide, the waters part to reveal a favourite food source for many of the birds that live around Loreto. You can spot many species of herons, egrets, pelicans, hawks, eagles and other birds.

Occasionally vehicles and ATVs drive up onto the beach around here, which definitely disturbs the peace and scares the birds.

If you visit, please enjoy this tranquil place quietly and keep it clean.

17. Horse riding in the desert

I don’t ordinarily recommend horse riding as an activity, as the treatment of horses is not always a priority, and it can be really unethical.

However, this tour offered by Wild Loreto uses horses from a local rancho, where they live in their usual environment and are looked after by their owners.

The desert landscapes around Loreto are so mind-blowingly beautiful, that I think spending a few hours horse riding would be an incredible activity.

After being picked up from your hotel, you’ll drive out to the ranch and have a briefing before jumping on your horse. The tour lasts about 2.5 hours, offering some incredible views of the Sierra la Giganta mountains and the Sea of Cortez.

We didn’t do this tour, and if you do, I would love to hear your first-hand experience to confirm it is ethical and kind.

18. Go shopping

The city’s centre, in the area around the mission, is full of artisan and souvenir shops.

This was some of the best shopping we have seen in all of Mexico.

You can find patterned pottery, hand-woven blankets, clothes, bags and other trinkets in a style that is unique to northern Mexico.

We visited Loreto at the very beginning of our trip around Mexico, and regrettably, we couldn’t buy anything here as we didn’t want to carry it around for the next six months.

But when it came time to do some shopping at the end of our travels, we didn’t find anything as good as Loreto.

So if you can, stock up on your shopping here!

19. Clam bake at Hotel Oasis

Every Saturday night the Hotel Oasis hosts a clam bake on the beach at the front of their restaurant, Del Carmen.

Chocolate clams ‘almejas chocolatas’ are a Baja culinary speciality! Despite what the name suggests, the clams don’t taste like chocolate. They get their name from their colour and texture.

While it’s common to eat them ceviche style, cured with lime juice, Hotel Oasis does it a little differently. They prepare the clams in the traditional Loreto style, cooking them on a fire buried in pebbly sand, covered with a bush called Romerillo.

It’s quite a spectacle to see!

They serve up a huge buffet-style feast, with everything from clams to oysters, chicken and ribs, salads, corn and potatoes.

There is music and dancing into the night. It’s such a great atmosphere and a really fun way to spend a Saturday evening in Loreto.

20. Pop into the Loreto Bay area

Many visitors base themselves in ‘Loreto Bay’.

The name is confusing, as it’s not referring to the Loreto Bay National Park. But rather the area south of Loreto city, which is home to a number of luxury resorts and planned developments.

The first ‘town’ is Nopolo, which is home to the Villages of Loreto development. This controversial development is home to many retired American and Canadian expats. And whilst I don’t think this area is an authentic view of Loreto, it’s worth popping into.

The luxury resort  Hotel Loreto Bay Golf Resort & Spa  is home to a schmicko golf course if you’re into that.

Otherwise, there are a few restaurants and cafes, and you can wander around for a while. We had a nice coffee at La Sirena Baja Café .

The houses are gorgeous and colourful, and whilst they are definitely a staged version of Mexican architecture and design, it is very lovely for a quick look.

If you continue south you will find Marina Puerto Escondido , which is basically an impressive display of wealth with not too much going on.

Don’t forget to stop in at  Mirador Frida  on the way for another version of the Loreto letters, and a stunning view of the islands in the bay.

Further south you will find  Villa del Palmar , a luxury all-inclusive resort that is a very popular choice with travellers. They also have a golf course here too.

This stretch of coast is Loreto’s version of  Cabo  or Cancun, and whilst we wouldn’t be staying here or spending a lot of time, we will admit it is a much better version of luxury tourism development than you see in these other two destinations.

Day trips from Loreto, Mexico

21. day trip to mulege.

About two hours north of Loreto is the small town of  Mulege .

Famous as a lush, tropical oasis in the middle of the desert, Mulege is blessed with a large freshwater source in the form of the Rio Mulege (Mulege River).

Palms line the banks, and the picturesque aerial view of the river snaking through the desert is what drew us to Mulege.

The Misión Santa Rosalía de Mulegé is the primary attraction in this tiny town. Another Jesuit mission, this one is set on a hill above the town overlooking the river.

Like most missions, the interior is simple and was actually closed when we visited. But the architecture and the setting are breathtaking.

The town of Mulege is small, with tight one-way streets, a small central plaza and a beautiful riverfront area, and you can easily explore it by foot in a few hours.

The best way to visit Mulege in one day is via your own  rental car .

It is a long-distance for a day trip (2 hours each way), and many people suggest staying in Mulege for a night or two. We would have loved to do this, but we were short on time so opted for just a one-day visit.

There isn’t all that much to see in Mulege, and we felt we covered it in a day. But we wouldn’t have been unhappy to stay a night or two and soak up the very small-town vibe!

22. Experience some of Baja’s best beaches at Bahia Concepcion

If you’re looking for amazing beaches in Loreto, the best ones are located around 90 minutes north in Bahia Concepcion. 

Rent a car , and enjoy one of the most scenic ocean drives in all of Mexico.

Boasting some of the most beautiful beaches in Baja, this enclosed bay is sheltered on either side by desert mountains, and connects with the Sea of Cortez through a very small opening.

A number of small islands fill the bay, and large sandbanks connect them with the mainland at low tide, making for some absolutely epic views.

With over a dozen beaches, this is a very popular spot for Canadian and North American RV’ers. It’s possible to park right up on the waterfront.

No matter which beach you choose to visit, you will enjoy beautiful blue waters and stunning desert landscapes.

Some charge a flat entry fee, whether you are camping overnight or just visiting for the day.

Some of the beaches are more built-up than others, with beach houses built right on the water, and small local restaurants. While others are empty with only spaces for RVs and a few camping facilities.

We combined our visit to Bahia Concepcion with Mulege (the northern end of the bay is just 30 minutes from Mulege), and unfortunately, the weather was freezing!

We had a beautiful sunny winter day, so the bay looked incredible, but the wind was howling so we couldn’t get out of the car and sit on the beach, as much as I wanted to.

We had a meal at one of the restaurants on the beach at Playa El Burro and popped into Playa El Requeson for a look.

Both were beautiful, but honestly, they all were so I think you could choose any to visit and have a wonderful day at the beach!

23. See the friendly grey whales in Magdalena Bay

If you’re road-tripping around Baja , you will most likely drive past Magdalena Bay on the route between Loreto and La Paz.

If this is the case, we would highly recommend dedicating a few nights and staying in the bay. You will have a more immersive and lengthy experience with the whales if you stay a few days.

However, if you’re just visiting Loreto, seeing the grey whales in Magdalena Bay is a feasible, albeit long, day trip.

Something very special happens in Magdalena Bay.

For reasons unknown, the grey whales that migrate to Magdalena Bay and other lagoons on the Pacific Coast of Baja are friendly.

When I say friendly, I mean approach the boat, stick their head out for a pat and kiss and hang around for hours interacting with you.

It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime to interact with such a magnificent, wild creature in this way.

The whales migrate to Baja in the winter months, usually from around late December – April. February – March are considered to be the peak months to see the most whales and their new babies.

This is one instance where I would actually suggest taking a tour vs driving yourself.

It is around 2 hours drive from Loreto to the port town of Adolfo Lopez Mateos on Magdalena Bay.

You still need to coordinate a tour to actually do the whale watching on a boat once you arrive. So it’s best to join a day trip from Loreto, so you can be sure the timings align and the boat will be waiting for you once you arrive.

You could spend weeks and weeks in Loreto, Mexico and still not run out of things to do here!

Loreto was the biggest surprise for us in Baja, and I am still pinching myself about the landscapes we saw.

The desert mountains of the Sierra de la Giganta were so rugged, so red. The waters of the Sea of Cortez were so bright and blue. It truly is some of the most spectacular scenery we have ever experienced.

Yes, a car definitely is needed to see the best of the area, there are so many great activities and natural areas to explore if you’ve got your own wheels. Why This Small Town is My Favorite Place To Visit On Mexico’s Baja Peninsula

When I travel to Mexico, I look for relatively small towns with a colonial feel. I am not interested in cruise or spring break destinations. In Baja California, Mexico, I have been fortunate to find my perfect place. 

Loreto is a colonial town with a permanent population of about 20,000, perched on the eastern side of the Baja Peninsula, nestled along the shore of the Sea of Cortez. It is 316 miles north of the better-known Cabo San Lucas , population 202,000, and very different in its ambiance. If you’re looking for a taste of “real” Mexico, this historic city is the one. 

  Many coastal towns with resorts and high-end hotels have a thriving nightlife. In the town of Loreto, most streets are quiet by 10 o’clock, and while there are great restaurants and lovely hotels, the atmosphere is relaxed and the tempo slower. 

I love the cobblestone streets in the center of town, the boardwalk along the waterfront, called the Malecon, family-style restaurants, and the beauty of offshore islands looming above the clear turquoise Sea of Cortez. If you want an experience in Mexico where you feel like you are in another country, instead of a look-alike resort, then you will not be disappointed in Loreto.

The weather is mostly dry and warm, as it is part of the Sonoran Desert and is considered arid subtropical. During October through March, the air temperatures range from the high 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit. Water temperatures are cool, and a spring wetsuit might be appropriate if you plan to snorkel. During April and May, the air warms and by June, July, and August, the daytime temperatures can reach the 90s. During summer the air is humid, due to the “little monsoons” of North America, and can be accompanied by rain. 

Loreto has a small international airport and there are direct flights from San Francisco Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth, Phoenix on Alaska or American Airlines. If you happen to be in Mexico, there are flights arriving in Loreto on both Volaris and Calafia Airlines. Hotels are plentiful and there are reasonably-priced rentals on Airbnb and Vrbo .

If you’re in for a road trip adventure, driving to Loreto out of Mexicali or Tijuana will be just that. I have done the trip in three days to allow for exploring and combined camping with staying in motels at Catavina and San Ignacio. It’s a scenic drive filled with wide-open spaces, volcanoes in the distance, and unique vegetation like cardon cactus. If you choose to drive, make sure your vehicle is checked and take extra food and water. I would not recommend driving at night, as there is very little lighting and animals, including cattle, may cross the road at any time.

Welcome To Loreto: Exploring The City

When I first get to a city, I like to explore by walking or riding a bike, which is easy to do in Loreto. I love looking at the colorful pueblo- and Spanish-style architecture of homes and markets, the enticing smell of homemade tortillas, and the early morning crow of roosters.

If you choose to bicycle, they can be rented at Susana’s Bike and Kayak rentals . Some local hotels, like Casa La Castenada , provide bikes for their guests.

Loreto was founded by Jesuits in 1697 because of the natural palm-lined oases in the area nestled between the Sierra La Giganta and the Sea of Cortez. The town was settled on the site of the Conchimo tribe of indigenous people, who are thought to have inhabited the area for at least 12,000 years. 

The Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto located in the main plaza of town was the first mission established on the Baja Peninsula, by Jesuits and later Franciscans, who continued building missions along the “Camino Real” or King’s Highway of Sur and Alta California into the early 17th and 18th centuries. The area around this handsome and well-maintained mission has a historic aura with its cobbled streets, small museum, and four or five colonial buildings. There are places to eat, some shops with colorful Mexican ceramics and clothing, and a lovely Spanish-style hotel. Services are still held in the mission, and it is worth peeking inside for a look at religious statues and paintings and to admire the beautiful altar. 

After you have wandered the town, sit at a local restaurant for a margarita and perhaps ceviche, a traditional and refreshing mixture of marinated shrimp or fish, mixed with chopped onions, tomatoes, juice from limes, and fresh cilantro, or try the chocolate clams, called this for their color.

If you have the energy, head for the Malecon, where you can view the volcanic islands offshore and watch local fishermen return with their catch. There are several hotels and restaurants along this lovely stretch where the aqua blue of the sea is home to a diverse population of seals, dolphins, manta rays, colorful fish, and birds.

Pro Tip: Stroll along the Malecon at sunset to view the fabulous red-orange colors reflected in the stunning blue of the sea. 

Visit Isla De Coronado

An experience you don’t want to miss while visiting Loreto is a panga boat ride to snorkel on the offshore volcanic island of Isla de Coronado. This is a magical spot, partly because in 1996, the Mexican government established the Bahia de Loreto National Marine Park , and the fish, marine mammals, sea bird populations, and manta rays here have increased due to their protection. To access the island, inquire at your hotel or go directly to the marina on the Malecon and ask for a guide. There are also ways to make an appointment for a tour online through small businesses such as Coronado Island Adventures.

My husband and I treated ourselves to a 3-hour tour, which included swimming with sea lions, sighting pelicans and blue-footed boobies, and snorkeling off a white sand beach. Most of the tours are run by local guides who will provide snacks, drinks, lunch, and snorkeling equipment. Tours last anywhere from 3 to 5 hours and cost around $75 USD per person.

Pro Tip:   I recommend arranging an early start to your island tour. If you do, you may be surprised to find yourself floating in the pristine waters with only yourself and the tropical fish and if you’re lucky, a few playful dolphins.

Side Trip From Loreto: Misión San Francisco Javier De Viggé-Biaundó

An enjoyable half-day trip on your own or an entire day with a guide, the Misión San Francisco Javier de Vigge-Biaundo is well worth the effort. It is located about 45 minutes outside of Loreto through the foothills of the Sierra La Gigante and into a date palm oasis and small valley. This is a beautifully restored stone mission; in fact, it is the best-preserved of all 27 missions on the Baja Peninsula. The mission was established to convert the Cochimi, the semi-nomadic Native American population, and because the water source here was more sustainable and reliable for agriculture than Loreto. 

The village of San Javier, with about 300 residents, has a few shady outdoor eating spots (if you haven’t packed a lunch). Make sure you explore the original aqueducts behind the mission, still used to grow citrus, grapes, and date palms. There is a small grove of the first olive trees planted on the peninsula, one with an impressive, twisted trunk that is 300 years old. If you choose to go with a local guide, you will be impressed with their knowledge of the native plants and animals as well as local culture and history.

Loreto, Mexico, Whale Watching

Whale watching is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and Loreto is an excellent starting point for the adventure. There are gray, blue, and humpback whales on the Pacific side of Baja. The best trip to take if you are staying in Loreto is to travel two hours to Magdalena Bay on the Pacific side. This tranquil bay is an ideal playground and breeding area for gray whales. Gray whales migrate from Alaska to mate, give birth, and raise their calves, and opportunities abound to see them up close.

  Although there is no guarantee that whales will approach your boat, and chasing them is illegal, you are guaranteed to see them. Some grays seem to enjoy human interaction and will swim to your boat and raise their amazing baleen-filled jaws to be stroked. This happened on my own whale trip, and I was in utter awe. The memory of this trip remains vivid; the sounds of the whales as they blow, the feel of their barnacle-covered skin, and the vivid blue of sky and sea.

 Baja whale watching is a year-round activity, but the best time to view and interact with gray whales is from January to late March. Tours leave by van from Loreto, or if you prefer, book ahead online with a tour company in Magdalena Bay and drive your own car. Most tours provide lunch and excellent local guides. 

Whatever activities you choose to do in Loreto, I assure you that you will want to return.

Pro Tip: Bring pesos with you, as many shops take cash, and you will want to tip your local guides.

I was seated at the back of the plane and the flight attendants were fantastic. I did not get food so can’t say. Thought the movie selection was lean.

You guys did great, the only thing keeping me from the higher rating is the physical dimensions of the seats, which staff has no control over. Keep up the good job.

Flight was good. Glad it was delayed or I may have missed the connection since I got to Seattle at about the same time my connection was to leave. The snack was a small bag of pretzels and a small soda. Can’t really call that food. There was no entertainment available on the flight.

It was much better than expected. Short flight and smaller plane so no entertainment or food.

It was so easy to board using my boarding pass on my iPhone, and I liked what I was given on the plane for food and drink, and everyone was very friendly.

It took around two hours to depart. Just sitting in the tamarack waiting. It impacted my traveling plans in a very dramatic way. When we returned, it took around two hours for us to be able to get our luggage. Ridiculous!!

The messaging about the change in flight destination and options for getting to SFO was poor. There should have been frequent updates. When I spoke to the boarding agent moment before we were supposed to board, he was flippant and offered no help before the announcement was made that transportation would be arranged. It was as poor of an experience that I've ever had.

I thought every thing was good with the acceptation of the long layover between Seattle and the Tampa trip.

My plane ride down landed 20 min late. Boarding at SFO was strange too. The people at the terminal were nice—but, boarding lacked direction, and was confusing . Coming back was worse—the plane was hours behind—and I barely caught the last Bart train back to San Francisco (3 min more and I would have been in trouble). It was a very stressful trip, and it didn’t need to be.

Same as the earlier flight. Bad boarding practices, uncomfortable seats, and no Wi-Fi service.

Just get Economy Plus for international flights, so worth it the extra room, bigger seats…

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

It was spectacular. I had basic Economy and was given so much space and their seats lean back so far. Staff was superb, food was superb, everything was superb, Finnair is Fantastic.

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

The WiFi tv wasn’t working. The flight was over sold and moved several times. The gate assignment appeared on the screens right as we were supposed to board. Because of the flight being over sold we were almost stuck in Cancun for a couple of a days. The flight attendants were unfriendly and would wake you up to pick up other people’s trash.

The reason we chose Volaris to fly from LAX to Mazatlan, Mexico was because of the DATES and TIMES for the NON-STOP flights. When those flights got Totally Changed that was UNACCEPTABLE ! ! ! Also, when my husband Died unexpectedly, the Only statement that Customer Service kept repeating was "they would only offer Credit on a future flight". REALLY?! Volaris was only going to offer CREDIT on another flight to a DEAD PERSON ! ! !

Overall good but we had a minor scare when a wind shear caused the plane to re take off on the first landing attempt. The crew handled it well and we landed safely on the second attempt

It was unfortunate that I paid more than $120 one way to carry on my luggage to only have to have them checked baggage. We board the flight and there’s a lot of overhead space. They checked our bags in Group 2 but Group 3 was able to board with their luggage. I would not fly Volaris again. The flight attendance on the plane was very nice but the employees at the gate prior to boarding was very rude.

For the price, you pretty much can't beat this airlines. As far as comfort, you could do a lot better, but it'll cost you. Over all cheapest way to get from point A to point B.

To many extra fees, poor customer service and very uncomfortable flight. No leg room and seat wont recline.

I am disabled and was unable to get any assistance from Volaris. I had to wait in line at front desk for 45 minutes, I am by myself, and unable to stand. When I got to front desk check in, they had no assistance for me. I did however, have wheelchair assistance when I arrived in Mexico City. Thank God for that!

It was horrible, our flight back was overbooked and had to take a flight 12hours later in the day but to LAX. Volaris is horrible.

Baja, Mexico

Zach Lazzari of Cross Border Coverage recommended Baja, Mexico, as an excellent choice for families looking for an international adventure.

“Skip the resort scene in Cabo and rent a car and grab an Airbnb on the East Cape or a place like Todos Santos,” he said. “You get the benefit of affordable flights to Cabo, rentals are pretty cheap, and it’s a beautiful scene that is friendly for travelers and families.”

Lazzari also suggested considering Loreto, another great town with an airport, for a safe, accessible and exciting family vacation.

Lisbon, Portugal

Alex Cornici of The Traveler highlighted Lisbon as an exception to the notion that Europe is synonymous with expensive travel.

“On the one hand, it offers an intense cultural experience at meager prices for accommodation, dining and cultural activities. On the other hand, it can be highly family-friendly, because the mass of historical places, beaches and the tram system will gladden both children and parents,” he said.

The Smoky Mountains

For those looking for an affordable family experience closer to home, Cornici recommended the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

“With camping on-site available and even renting rustic, bare-bones cabins, one gains affordable access to hiking, wildlife observation and whatever else nature has to offer,” he said.

Tim Hentschel, the co-founder and CEO of HotelPlanner , also praised Great Smoky Mountains National Park for its free entry, endless exploration opportunities and budget-friendly accommodations in nearby gateway towns.

Bali, Indonesia

Cornici suggested Bali as a perfect option for adventurous families willing to go the extra mile.

“Besides being budget-friendly, at least for most countries due to its favorable exchange rates, it also offers beaches and cultural tours in Ubud,” he said. “Family-friendly accommodations and welcoming, bustling hospitality make it a favorite for parents and kids alike.”

US National Parks

Echo Wang, CEO and founder of Cool Travel Vibes , recommended exploring the incredible and affordable national parks in the U.S.

“Many have ranger-led hikes and programs, keeping everyone entertained,” she said.

Hentschel also emphasized the abundance of family-friendly activities and affordable accommodations near the 63 U.S. National Parks and more than 400 national park sites.

Southeast Asia

Wang also suggested considering Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and Vietnam for their delicious food, cultural experiences and activities that are both immersive and relatively inexpensive.

Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast

Hentschel recommended a road trip along the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast, from New Orleans to Pensacola.

This stretch offers “beautiful beaches, most everything is about a third less expensive, delicious fresh catch seafood and plenty to see and do,” he said. “You can road trip all the way from New Orleans, Biloxi, Mobile, to Destin and Pensacola, or pick a beach town like Gulf Shores or Panama City Beach and enjoy an affordable and family-friendly vacation that won’t break the bank.”

Margaritaville at Sea

For an affordable Caribbean getaway, Hentschel suggested Margaritaville at Sea, which offers 2-night, 3-day excursions from Palm Beach, Florida to the Bahamas starting at $100.

“If you’ve never been to the Bahamas, this is probably the cheapest way to go,” he said.

Syracuse, New York

Hentschel recommended Syracuse as an alternative to Broadway for theater-loving families.

“The quality of performances is on par with Off-Broadway in New York City, with much less expensive tickets, hotels and restaurants,” he said. “While you’re there, tour Syracuse University and attend a sporting event or two.”

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Lastly, Hentschel suggested visiting the Amish community and Hershey Park in Lancaster County.

“This road trip is a rite of passage for many families living in the Northeast or Midwest who are close enough to take the family to see the Amish community, tour the Hershey chocolate factory and go on all the rides at Hershey Park, all in one weekend,” he said. “This is a less expensive trip than Orlando and includes some of the same combinations of educational/cultural/historical immersion, entertainment and adventure.”

By following these expert recommendations and tips, middle-class families can enjoy unforgettable vacations without going broke. As Cornici put it, “Affordable travel does not equate to compromising on experiences. It involves making the right plans and, in most cases, accepting the local way of life, as it may offer experiences that are deeper and more enriching than those offered on a platter on the normal tourist route.”
