Abu Dhabi Layover – A Complete Guide

Updated February 13, 2024

// By Margherita

Are you thinking about an Abu Dhabi layover? Here’s all you need to know to plan your layover and decide what to see in Abu Dhabi during the time you have!

Would you like to make the most of your layover? Book one of these Abu Dhabi tours, tried and tested!

We love booking our tours with GetYourGuide – they offer a variety of activities, flexible booking, and 24/7 support!

  • From Abu Dhabi: Grand Mosque, Royal Palace, and Etihad Tower – see the best of the Emirati capital in one day!
  • Abu Dhabi: Morning Desert Tour, Camel Ride, & Sandboarding – spend a morning adventuring in the desert around Abu Dhabi!
  • Abu Dhabi: Desert Safari with BBQ, Camel Ride & Sandboarding – this one is for you if you want to explore the desert in the evening!
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi: Entry Tickets – book in advance your tickets for Abu Dhabi’s best museum and skip the line!
  • Abu Dhabi: 2-hour Guided Kayak Tour in the Mangroves – spend your layover in nature with this tour!

It is no mystery that the two main Emirati airlines – Emirates and Etihad – are among the best in the world, and a great option to travel between Europe and Asia (and onwards to Australia).

Personally, I’m not a big fan of Dubai – I mean, Burj Khalifa is amazing and all , but I much prefer Abu Dhabi , both as a place to stay and for a layover. In my opinion, Etihad is a wonderful airline , usually a little cheaper than Emirates but comparable in terms of service and entertainment. Ah, and before you roast me in comments, I would repeat that is IN MY OPINION.

Abu Dhabi is also a great city , buzzing and lively but not as hectic as Dubai. There are wonderful sights like the Sheikh Zayed Mosque , just a short taxi ride from the airport and ideal to visit during an Abu Dhabi layover. The city is also perfect as a base to explore more of the United Arab Emirates – the country is associated by most travellers with glitzy cityscapes, but also has some amazing nature to explore!

Etihad also offers Abu Dhabi layover tours and packages, including free (or discounted) hotel stays – keep reading our Abu Dhabi layover guide to learn more!

Things to Know Before an Abu Dhabi Layover

Abu Dhabi International Airport is divided into 3 terminals . Terminal 1 is for Etihad Airways, while the two remaining terminals serve all other airlines.

You can easily walk between the different terminals in about 20 minutes. Alternatively, there is a free shuttle bus between the different terminals that leave every 20 minutes.

Note that there are security checks between each terminal, so even though you do not exit the airport, you must pass the security check when changing terminals.

If you leave the airport, there are lockers for a fee where you can store your luggage.

Can I Leave the Airport During Transit in Abu Dhabi?

Of course you can, provided you either have pre-arranged a visa, or get a visa on arrival . Remember that traffic can be really heavy in Abu Dhabi, so make sure you allow enough time to get back and clear immigration before your onward flight.

Transport from and to Abu Dhabi Airport

There is a bus service running between Abu Dhabi Airport and the city center every 40 minutes 24/7 that only costs 4 AED (approximately 1 USD.) The journey takes about 45 minutes but might be affected by traffic, so when returning to the airport, make sure you leave extra time for delays so that you do not risk getting late for your next flight. The buses leave from all three terminals.

There are taxis available at all three terminals. Taxi rides are metered and start at 25 AED (approximately 7 USD) and the cost is usually 70-80 AED (18-22 USD) between the airport and the city center. However, the prices will be affected by traffic. The taxi journey is 30 minutes without traffic.

Immigration and Visa for Abu Dhabi Layovers

If you have a layover in Abu Dhabi that is long enough to give you time to leave the airport and explore the city, you need a visa.

Luckily, a lot of nationalities are granted a free visa on arrival. Most European nationalities as well as American, Australian, and New Zealand citizens, followed by a number of Asian nationalities are eligible.

For citizens of GCC, a visa is not required at all.

If you need to apply for a visa for your Abu Dhabi layover , certain hotels might be able to apply for you. The only airline that can apply for your visa is Etihad Airways. You should apply in good time before your layover to secure that you get the answer before your trip and can start planning your layover.

You can find out more and check if you need to apply for a visa or not here .

What to wear on a Layover in Abu Dhabi

The United Arab Emirates is a Muslim country and even though the dress code is not as strict as in other destinations , you should assure that you dress respectfully even on a short layover.

A general rule of thumb for both men and women is to cover the knees and shoulders . On top of that, avoid showing cleavage or wearing clothes that are transparent or show too much contour.

It is not mandatory for women to cover their heads, but it can be a good idea to bring a shawl with you to use if you plan on entering the mosque.

The dress code for entering Sheikh Zayed Mosque for women is to cover up completely from ankles to wrist including the head. For men, pants covering ankles and a t-shirt covering shoulders are required.

For tourists that do not comply with the dress code, women will be provided with an Abaya and Shayla, and men will get a Kandura before entering.

5-hour (or shorter) Layover in Abu Dhabi

If you have a short layover in Abu Dhabi of up to 5 hours it is not worth leaving the airport as you will waste a lot of time traveling to the city and back. You must also consider the time you will use in security controls at the airport.

Luckily, there are enough things to do to fill your time at the airport. Here are the top things to do at Abu Dhabi airport that you can take advantage of during a short layover.

Enjoy the Lounges

Abu Dhabi Airport has fabulous lounges that you can enjoy during your layover. If you fly first class or business class on Etihad Airways, you have access to most of them.

However, if you fly economy or come with any other airline that does not collaborate with Etihad Airways, Al Dhabi Lounge (Terminal 1) offers luxurious dining opportunities, showers, and a selection of movies.

If you do not fly first class or business class, you can pay a reasonable walk-in rate of only 210 AED (approximately 57 USD) for 3 hours in Al Dhabi Lounge which is perfect for a 5-hour layover. The lounge is open 24/7.

Shop at the Tax-Free Shops

In Terminals 1 and 3 you find world-class shopping in the tax-free shops. If you need a new electronic device, want to freshen up with a new perfume, or are looking for traditional Middle Eastern items, they have it all. You can also get delicious food items like dates, pistachios, and other kinds of dried fruits and nuts.

Stay Connected

The airport has f ree Wi-Fi across all terminals including free internet kiosks where you can connect with family and friends about your whereabouts. It is also a great opportunity to catch up with work if you have anything pending.

Relax at a café

There are cafés across the airport where you can relax with a good book, freshly brewed coffee, and a bite to eat.

Stay at an Airport Hotel

If you need to catch up on sleep or your layover is at night, you might like to take advantage of the airport hotels.

The airport also has sleeping pods, but they have not been functional since the pandemic and there is no information stating when or if these will be available for transit passengers again.

Aerotel Abu Dhabi Airport Hotel – Situated in Terminal 1, you can fuel up at their excellent restaurant, relax in comfortable beds, and take advantage of the wake-up service so that you do not have to worry about getting late for your next flight. Minimum booking for 6 hours, but you might find it is worth it if you are tired.

Premier Inn Airport Hotel – This hotel has direct access to Terminals 1 and 3 via the Skypark retail corridor, and offers a selection of rooms, conference spaces and facilities including a spa, swimming pool and gym. There is also a free shuttle bus running to Yas Marina, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the Corniche.

6-hour Layover in Abu Dhabi

abu dhabi sheikh zayed mosque white tiles

Sheikh Zayed Mosque

With a 6-hour layover, you have just enough time to leave the airport to visit Abu Dhabi’s biggest tourist attraction , the spectacular Sheikh Zayed Mosque . The grand mosque is one of the biggest in the world and features an exceptional fusion of different Islamic architectural styles.

It was built between 1994 and 2007 and after his death, Sheikh Zayed was laid to rest in the mosque’s courtyard.

You can book a guided tour of the mosque which will last an hour and take some time after to take in all the incredible architectural details.

Entry Fee: Free

Opening Hours: Saturday-Thursday 09:00-22:00 and Friday 16:30-22:00

You can also take advantage of the free shuttle bus between the airport and Yas Marina , but 6 hours is not long enough to see all there is to see, so I would save Yas Marina for a longer Abu Dhabi layover!

12-16 Hour Layover in Abu Dhabi

With a 12-hour (or longer) layover in Abu Dhabi, you can see a lot more than the Grand Mosque. Here are our top suggestions.

Emirates Palace

If you are fascinated by gold, you cannot miss out on the Emirates Palace. Gold-covered domes meet you once you enter the lobby of this incredibly luxurious hotel that stretches over a kilometer from one side to another. You can even pamper yourself with a cappuccino covered in gold flakes in their prestigious café.

If you want to see more than the lobbies and exhibitions which are free to enter, book a guided tour of the ballrooms, palatial suites, and over 100 hectares of perfectly trimmed gardens. The palace even boasts its own private beach for guests.

If you want to spend more time at the palace, a day pass gives you access to some of the luxuries you would have as a guest at the hotel, including the spa and pools.

Entry fee: Free (lobbies and exhibitions only) – 150 AED (approximately 41 USD) for a guided tour

Tourist opening hours: 24/7

Yas Marina is one of the world’s most outstanding marinas and a lovely place to go for a walk, cool down in the musical water fountain, watch the luxury yachts as they leave the dock, or if you feel adventurous – go jet skiing.

The marina hosts different seasonal events that are exciting to catch a glimpse of. Especially if you happen to be there during the Formula 1 races, there will be a lot going on!

In fact, Yas Marina Circuit is the most popular tourist attraction at the marina. You can visit every day between 09:00 and 24:00. Guided tours of the circuits cost 130 AED (approximately 35 USD) and is a great way to learn more about the race tracks.

You can also go running or cycling along the race track on selected nights, and even rent road bikes for free – you can learn more about it on the TrainYas page of the Yas Marina Circuit website!

There are restaurants lined up on the marina where you can have lunch or dinner with a view – especially beautiful at sunset.

Abu Dhabi Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi is the result of an agreement between France and Abu Dhabi lasting from 2017 to 2037 where they can use the name and exhibit items from the Louvre and other museums in France. The museum itself is an impressive architectural attraction and is the first universal museum in the Arab world.

Inside the Louvre, there is a permanent exhibition featuring incredible archaeological artifacts from around the world like pottery, sculptures, and jewelry. You can also admire paintings by artists like Gustave Caillebotte and Jean-François De Troy.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, they host temporary art exhibitions throughout the year.

Entry fee: 60 AED (approximately 16 USD)

Opening hours: Tuesday-Sunday 10:00-18:30 (last entry 17:30) Mondays are closed.

Abu Dhabi Layover Guide with Etihad Airways

February 2, 2017

In recent years, Abu Dhabi has gained its popularity of being one of the best transit or a layover destination. All thanks to Etihad Airways that connects most of the major cities of the world. Not just you can clear the US immigration at the Abu Dhabi airport itself but also proximity to major attractions from the airport allows you to tick off one more destination from your bucket list. The chances are pretty high that you might transit through Abu Dhabi if you are flying with Etihad Airways. And if like us, you don’t fancy the idea of being stuck in the airport for 6 – 20 hours, then this post is for you. We have compiled this Abu Dhabi Layover guide that will help you in making the best use of your layover time whilst flying with Etihad Airways.

There are quite a lot of things that you can squeeze in your 6 – 20 hours of layover. So, let’s get started.

Visit Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Abu Dhabi Layover Guide with Etihad Airways

One of the most beautiful and Instagram-worthy places to visit in Abu Dhabi is the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. It is also one of the largest mosques in the world with a capacity to host 40,000 worshippers at a time. The design and the layout are however inspired by Mughal, Moorish, Persian and Pakistan’s Badshahi Mosque architecture which together reflects as an influencing art and dexterity.

The mosque also houses the largest hand knitted carpet that took 2 years to complete. The carpet was made by approximately 1,200-1,300 carpet knotters. There is also a stunning chandelier in the main prayer hall which is one of the largest chandeliers in the world having a dimension of 10 meters in diameter and 15 meters high.

A visit to this mosque is an absolute must. The evening is by far the perfect time to capture some great photographs of the mosque with its reflections in the surrounding reflective pools.

Bike on Corniche Road

What better way to spend time than to bike around the beachfront and the Corniche Road? A beautiful promenade dotted with cute cafes and restaurants. The food options are many and varied and, are sure to tantalize your taste buds. The promenade also houses many parks and children’s play area. The Corniche beach is also an amazing place to spend time. The beach section for General Public is free and open to all whereas you have to pay a fee to enter the family or the single’s section.

You can also visit the Avenue Mall at the Etihad tower for some high-end shopping and just shop till you drop.

Go for a ride in a Sea Plane

abu dhabi transit tour

Take to the skies and enjoy the panoramic views of Abu Dhabi in a 25-minute seaplane ride. It is an absolute thrill to take off from the sea in a seaplane. You can see the famed buildings and landmarks of Abu Dhabi like the Ferrari World, Sheikh Zayed Mosque, and its gardens, the beautiful Corniche Road, and the beach. A perfect photo op for the aerial view of Abu Dhabi. It is a guided tour and is one of the best ways to see Abu Dhabi if you do not have much time on your hands.

Check out the Seawings website for scenic tour options.

Visit Ferrari World at Yas Islands

Ferrari World - Abu Dhabi Layover Guide

For all the F1 fans and adrenaline junkies, this is the place to visit. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is the only Ferrari branded theme park in the world and also happens to have the fastest roller coaster in the world, Formula Rossa, with a top speed of 239 mph. It also happens to be the largest indoor theme park and has 20 different rides on offer. You also get to see how Ferraris are made in a virtual tour of the Ferrari factory in Maranello.

There are simulators and go-karts to keep you occupied. If you have never seen an F1 track then head to the nearby Yas Marina Circuit which is the venue for Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The circuit has five grandstand areas and its development includes a theme park, water park, hotels and beach, twining together to make up a perfect treat to enjoy. The best part is you can drive around Yas Island behind the wheel of a Ferrari California.

Go for a Desert Safari

Abu Dhabi Layover Guide with Etihad Airways - Desert Safari

If you have more than 6 hours on you, then going on a desert safari is a great idea. It requires about 5 to 6 hours to complete. Drive in an air-conditioned 4X4 with an expert guide. The tour includes dune bashing, visit a camel farm, visit a desert camp with dinner, bonfire, and belly dancing show.

You can also do some sandboarding during the dune bashing. It is one of the best ways to explore the Bedouin life that Abu Dhabi has on offer.

Visit the Observation Deck

The answer to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa is Abu Dhabi’s observation deck which offers sightseeing from Jumeirah at Etihad Towers Hotel. Nothing better to call it a day by devouring in some delicious food on the menu and drinking in the views watching the world beneath you.

There are a lot of other things on offer at Abu Dhabi which you can explore like museums, forts or just ramble around the city admiring the beautiful architecture.

Hope this Abu Dhabi Layover guide was useful for you.

Loved the Grand Mosque, I actually went from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for only one reason – to see the Mosque! 😀 Nice photos, one can imagine its grandeur. And you are right, there are few more things to see, it is worth to spend a weekend there. Thanks for sharing!

The desert safari sounds the most intriguing to me because it’s so exotic! My husband has a short layover there next month so I will send him this post!

' src=

February 8, 2017 at 7:46 am

Now this makes me want to get a flight through Abu Dhabi just so I can do all this on a layover! I would love to see that rug in the mosque, sounds incredible. Also, how fun to fly on a seaplane in between flights LOL. I would really enjoy the dessert safari and visit to the camel farm for sure 🙂

' src=

February 8, 2017 at 3:09 pm

Ferrari world and Desert Safari would be my top 2 choices! Btw, US immigration can be cleared here itself! Wow! That’s cool.

' src=

February 8, 2017 at 6:49 pm

Went via Abu Dhabi to Tanznia last year. Didn’t have time for a proper layover, but if I do next time I will certainly look in to some of these options. Agree about Ethiad – possibly the best airline I’ve flown with to date, and I’ve flown with quite a few!

' src=

February 9, 2017 at 9:22 am

I have never been there and I wonder if I can visit Abu Dabhi. But I would love to experience that country too. Maybe someday. I think that you had a wonderful experience there. More travels to come.

' src=

February 9, 2017 at 11:11 am

This looks like so much fun! I’ve done a couple of layovers in Abu Dhabi before, but they’ve either been too short, or through the night, so I haven’t been able to get out and have all the adventures you did. Here’s hoping I can do this the next time around!

' src=

February 9, 2017 at 2:56 pm

You really show how to make the most of a layover in Abu Dhabi, your photos of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque really show how beautiful it is. I know the dunes in the desert are huge, sandboarding from them would be pretty spectacular. I had never heard of Cornish Road but it sounds like a great place to chill out after a visit to Ferrari World!

' src=

February 9, 2017 at 4:16 pm

I’ve heard so many wonderful things about Abu Dhabi, but have not had a chance to visit. We always travel with the kids and would love to share this part of the world with them. I especially want to see the mosque. SUCH a stunning spot.

Grt post. Loved it and very informative. How do we get transit visa.

' src=

February 9, 2017 at 10:54 pm

Great tips for a layover. Abu Dhabi is not short of places to see and things to do. Might as well do some of these instead of boring yourself to death in the airport.

' src=

February 10, 2017 at 12:11 am

Love your photos, Swati and Sam. Abu Dhabi is always getting me speechless. Everything looks so glamorous and beautiful!

' src=

February 10, 2017 at 2:19 am

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque is amazing! Thanks for including the facts about it-fascinating! If I had a layover that and biking Corniche Road would be on my list.

' src=

February 10, 2017 at 3:02 am

Thank you for sharing these great tips. I agree – been stuck at the airport for hours not fun at all. I am always looking for some things to do “on the ground.” Bicycling sounds like a lovely idea. Sorry for newbie question (haven’t traveled through Abu Dhabi yet), would it be too hot to do so during the day? My airline of choice so far was Qatar. Perhaps, one day Etihad offer some nicer deal and give me the opportunity to stop by in Any Dhabi ;). Looking forward to for this to happen. Happy travels!

You are layover guru’s love this post, so many fun things to do and epic places to snap those all important selfies. I have never been to Dubai but would love the opportunity and your post has sold it to me.

I would love to visit Abu Dhabi sometime! Out of the activities you listed, I think I’d be most interested in the sea plane and the desert safari. Both seem like such cool experiences and unlike anything I’ve done before. Thanks for sharing!

' src=

February 10, 2017 at 4:25 am

Abu dhabi is such a beautiful place. I would love the sea plane and the desert Safari experience. Whenever we make business trips to USA , there is often a layover at Abu Dhabi. Now I know how to make use of that 🙂

' src=

February 10, 2017 at 6:40 am

What a fantastic layover! I would love to visit the mosque and the Ferrari world 🙂 any approximate idea on the cost of such a layover?

' src=

The mosque is just as stunning as I imagined it would be! It’s such an interesting part of the world. Great photos, thanks for sharing. Happy travels 🙂

' src=

I would Love to visit the Grand and Largest Mosque. How intricate that carpet will be which took years to be completed. The other thing which is fascinating me is sea plane. I think that will be so much of a fun.

' src=

February 10, 2017 at 12:40 pm

Abu Dhabi is high up on my bucket list. There’s so much to do there. Although I’ve been to Dubai, I have only been to the airport in Abu Dhabi – on a short layover. Did you need a visa to go out though?

' src=

February 10, 2017 at 2:04 pm

The Grand Mosque looks beautiful. I would love to see that in person! I’m not sure when I will have the opportunity to visit Abu Dhabi… but I definitely hope to one day!

' src=

February 11, 2017 at 5:23 am

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque is captivating and dazzling. The sea plane ride and desert Safari must surely be an electrifying experience. I can’t help but gape at the thought of the view of Abu Dhabi beneath me from the observation tower.

' src=

February 11, 2017 at 5:38 am

Squeezing in the prominent attractions of the city within the layover period definitely sounds like a great idea to check off another city from the bucket list. The Sheikh Zayed Mosque is no doubt the highlight of the visit we would make sure that we could atleast make a visit to this marvel and the next would be the desert safari. Good to know that the key attractions are in close proximity to the airport making it easier to cover as much possible in small time period.

' src=

February 11, 2017 at 9:07 am

I was actually in Abu Dhabi in a layover, in November. Unfortunately I only had about 2 hours between planes so I couldn’t get out of the airport and visit. I do remember however the beautiful views over the city when we landed and how I wish I would have time to visit the White Mosque. But i guess there is always next time.

' src=

February 11, 2017 at 10:55 am

Abu Dhabi has selected few options to explore! I was lucky enough to chance upon seeing the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, it truly was grand! The YAS Islands offerings are great too, but require longer time. I spent a day at the Ferrari World and still couldn’t get done with all of it!

Abu Dhabi is a great place to kill time during a layover. The airport isn’t too far away from many of the city’s attractions, especially the Grand Mosque. I missed out on Ferrari World last time I was there, so I would head straight there for some Ferrari action!

I have been to Dubai many times and once I went from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for a meeting, but didn’t do anything there. What a shame. I really missed all of them. I should fly with Etihad to make it up. The airline is a good one

' src=

February 11, 2017 at 6:25 pm

You know I have been in that airport for transit, on our way to Australia. I have never really thought about staying longer and exploring but you post made me realise that there is a lot to do there and it a beautiful place. I definitely keen to spend a couple of days there next time during my layover.

' src=

February 11, 2017 at 8:49 pm

The mosque and bike rides look amazing! What a nice way to spend a layover. I think the desert safari would require more than a brief layover!

' src=

February 12, 2017 at 12:32 am

I’ve only been laid over there once, and luckily the airline put us up in a hotel. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to leave the airport, these activities look great.

' src=

February 12, 2017 at 12:45 pm

I am one of those people that have only ever been in the airport here during my layover to Australia. I have never really thought about staying here for a couple of days but after reading your post, I realised that there is a lot of things to do. I think I might have to reconsider stopping next time I fly to Australia.

February 12, 2017 at 1:15 pm

Great suggestions for a layover! The mosque is stunning. The desert safari looks like it might need more than a layover.

' src=

February 12, 2017 at 1:56 pm

Now that Abu Dhabi is becoming so popular as a layover destination, it’s great to get some ideas for things to do there. I would definitely make a desert safari my priority. In fact, I might even try arrange a long layover for that purpose! The sea plane looks cool too! Your list has something for everyone.

' src=

February 12, 2017 at 3:58 pm

Oh that sea plane ride looks fantastic! What a wonderful photo. The Sheikh Zayed Mosque is on my bucket list if I ever make it to that part of the world. 😉

' src=

February 12, 2017 at 5:34 pm

I’ve been to Dubai twice and would love to visit Au Dhabi too. Your suggestions sound really interesting and appropriate for a layover.

' src=

February 12, 2017 at 5:49 pm

I love long layovers because they give an opportunity to (at least briefly) explore a place you might not visit otherwise! Abu Dhabi would be a great city for a quick stop – I like the activities you mention in this post. Personally, I’d probably go for the desert safari. Thank you for these tips!

' src=

February 12, 2017 at 8:35 pm

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque looks absolutely spectacular. I love architecture so I think this would be something I’d definitely visit. But on top of that, I think flying a seaplane and doing a desert safari would be really fun activities. I’ll keep this in mind if I make it to Abu Dhabi.

' src=

February 12, 2017 at 9:12 pm

I love to see Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the photos are amazing! I often thought of traveling to Abui Dhabi or Dubai. Next time my flight has a layover there I will take the time to it check it out.

' src=

February 13, 2017 at 2:20 am

Your post made me remember the awesome we had in Abu Dhabi. I fell in love with the architecture of Sheikh Zayed mosque. I guess you have covered them all . Keep it up.

' src=

February 13, 2017 at 9:00 am

Cool! Is it true that luxury cars here are so common you just see them “gathering dusts” by the roadside? 😛 Nah, really..I’d love to be behind the wheel of a Ferrari! Many people won’t have trouble getting out of the airport without a visa. So I wonder, for people like me who need visas practically everywhere, does Etihad or other airlines actually sponsor a visa like Qatar, for example?

' src=

February 13, 2017 at 11:14 am

Great ideas for a quick stop. I’d be straight on the seaplane for an aerial view then off to the desert afterwards! The mosque looks absolutely beautiful. I love Arabic and Persian art and architecture – this looks like a great place to see them.

' src=

February 13, 2017 at 12:41 pm

If I had to pick one reason to go to Abu Dhabi, it would be for the desert safari. Most definitely. My next pick would be the stunning Arabic architecture of Sheikh Zayed Mosque.

' src=

February 13, 2017 at 12:50 pm

Abu dhabi is pretty under-rated, glad to see more people visiting the city. More so, considering if someone is in Dubai, it is a muct to drive down to Abu Dhabi. The Ferrari World was like a dream and we had only one day to cover it. Needless to say, we couldn’t. The post brought back all our memories back! 😀

' src=

February 13, 2017 at 3:40 pm

I know what you are talking about. I was stuck in Sharjah Airport layover and was dying to see the city. Sadly, I didn’t plan in advance and regreted later. Abu Dhabi seems like an interesting place. Too good to waste inside a clinical airport.

' src=

February 13, 2017 at 3:43 pm

Way too many great options to complete in a quick layover. The mosque looks so magnificent. I know it is a new structure but I think after a 100 years it will be considered a heritage site.

' src=

February 13, 2017 at 5:58 pm

I would personally plan a long layover in Abu Dhabi to get this experience! I’m sure the pictures don’t do the ornate mosque justice!

' src=

February 13, 2017 at 9:48 pm

Sheikh Zayed Mosque is definitely one of the most beautiful buildings ever. I hope to see it in person one day soon. Great tips for a layover!

' src=

February 13, 2017 at 11:43 pm

I was literally just talking to a friend about Abu Dhabi today! I’ve only recently added it to my must-visit list. I’m always a little nervous to leave the airport on a layover, even if it is quite a few hours long. But you certainly enticed me with your tips! I might just have to try leaving the airport on my next layover!

' src=

February 14, 2017 at 3:37 am

Ohhh. a 25 minute sea plane ride looks like where you would find me. I’d be afraid of missing my next flight on a layover, but your suggestions are fantastic!

' src=

February 14, 2017 at 3:28 pm

Great ideas. How much time would be required if we wanted to do them all? Grand Mosque happened by chance… thanks to a kind friend!

' src=

February 14, 2017 at 5:24 pm

I totally want to visit Abu Dhabi. So many things to do. I didn’t know about the sea plane and this is something I would love to do

' src=

February 15, 2017 at 9:04 am

Must say! you have mentioned the best things in this list! we did the Ferrari world tour and sea plane ride it is certainly alot fun, better than dubai in many ways! Which do you prefer Dubai or Abu Dhabi? Cheers

' src=

February 15, 2017 at 10:00 am

We have a 13 hour layover in Abu Dhabi both ways and are trying to determine if we should book an outside hotel stay for these vs lounge stay or airport hotel?

' src=

February 16, 2017 at 9:23 pm

That Sheikh Zayed Mosque looks breath taking. For some reason it remind me of the inside of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Abu Dhabi and Dubai are 100% on my to go to list. Also as an owner of a Jeep Wrangler I would also love to go driving through the dessert.

' src=

February 17, 2017 at 2:03 pm

Wow, I am amazed of the beauty of Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Visiting it or going for a Desert Safari would be my top choices. And one more thing: Congratulations for your photography skills! 🙂

' src=

February 17, 2017 at 5:23 pm

The mosque looks so elegant and magnificent. With so much to do over a layover, I would not mind booking my connecting flight the next day so that I get ample time to explore Abu Dhabi. I m wondering is a visa is needed to get out of the airport.

' src=

February 17, 2017 at 7:45 pm

Abu Dhabi looks beautiful from your pics. I have been in transit through it but never more than a few hours. I would love to visit the Mosque it looks stunning and also to do the desert safari.

' src=

February 18, 2017 at 1:28 am

I have sat in many an airport on a layover and normally look for the shortest amounts of time and sit somewhere and read a book. This really needs to stop and I need to look for these longer ones and explore. Its amazing that you can head out in the desert, flight on a sea plane etc. during you layover. The Mosque looks so pretty too. Thanks for inspiring me.

' src=

March 1, 2017 at 11:49 am

I’ve never flown Etihad so haven’t ever had the opportunity to have a layover of any length of time in Abu Dhabi, but when the opportunity arises I for sure will jump at it! Sheikh Zayed Mosque is one structure I’ve wanted to see up close for years now – it’s so ornate and beautiful, unlike anything else really.

April 5, 2017 at 11:52 am

I would have loved to take this opportunity when I had a layover in Abu Dhabi but I was there only for 1.5 hours each way, so there wasn’t enough time to do anything but run from one gate to another. I did however plan on returning to Abu Dhabi one day and explore it. I would love to see the White Mosque.

Layover In Abu Dhabi: The Ultimate Guide 2024

Abu Dhabi

There's lots you can do on a layover at Abu Dhabi International Airport without running the risk of cutting it fine for catching your connecting flight. You have a choice of transport options to take you from any of the airport’s three terminals, express bus, taxi, or private car, and into the metropolis that is the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

If you're aware of the length of your Abu Dhabi layover before you arrive then a little forward planning goes a long way and will help you to maximize the time you have no matter how brief it is. Keep in mind that roads can get congested during the peak hours so it may take longer than you expect to get in and out of the city. Make sure you know which terminal your Abu Dhabi connection departs from before you set off sightseeing or you could find yourself in the wrong one while watching your plane taxiing along the runway getting ready to take-off without you.

6 hour layover in Abu Dhabi

When you have just six hours on your Abu Dhabi layover, you'll need to spend them in the airport as you won't be eligible for a transit visa and without one, it's not possible for you to go into the city. That doesn't mean a short layover in Abu Dhabi is a hardship though as once you've dropped your bags off at a luggage locker service, you can make the most of the precious minutes you have with a pampering session at one of the airport's deluxe spas. Follow that with a relaxed meal in one of the classier restaurants and after a browse around the duty-free stores, you'll be ready to take off feeling like a new person.

  • You'll find the TOSA spa in the Skypark Plaza of Terminal 1 where they offer full-body massages, foot massages, pedicures, manicures, and other beauty treatments.
  • If you've had a long flight and need to freshen up, you'll find premium shower facilities in all of the airport lounges that you can access for a small fee.

Abu Dhabi, UAE

8 hour layover in Abu Dhabi

Before you even start contemplating what you're going to do on your eight-hour layover in Abu Dhabi, you'll need to acquire a transit visa so you can go out of the airport without running the risk of getting arrested. You can apply online before arrival so long as you are a national of one of the UAE's green list countries.

If you have your transit visa, what you will find on an eight-hour layover in Abu Dhabi is that time is of the essence. After clearing passport control and collecting your bags, that time will have diminished to around six and a half or maybe seven if there's no queues to contend with. Add to those figures the amount of time it’ll take to get in and out of the city plus how long you’ll need to check-in for your connecting flight, and you won't need to use a calculator to get the general drift that the one thing you're running out of is plenty of time.

Forget using public transport and take a four-hour private tour of Abu Dhabi. The driver-guide will collect you from the terminal and drop you there when the tour is finished so you'll be saving money too. You choose what you want to see and can stop whenever you want.

  • To be granted a transit visa, you'll need to prove you have flights in and out of Abu Dhabi and are staying between eight hours to four days only.
  • The bus into the city takes around forty-five minutes and the trip by car at least thirty whether it's a taxi or a chauffeur-driven limo.

10 hour layover in Abu Dhabi

When you have ten hours or thereabouts between flights you can start to enjoy your layover in Abu Dhabi more. Leave your bags at any Abu Dhabi suitcase storage facility and take a taxi to the Louvre Abu Dhabi in the Saadiyat Cultural District . After you've seen what there is to see there, take a stroll around the Saadiyat Marina or along Saadiyat Beach for a breath of fresh air before spoiling yourself with a meal at the Saadiyat Island Beach Club.

  • The Louvre Abu Dhabi is an enormous art museum with eight thousand square meters of galleries to explore, so you'll need a couple of hours at least to see it all.
  • You'll need to acquire a day pass to eat at the Saadiyat Island Beach Club. They're available online through the official website. Prices vary depending on the day of the week and number of people attending.

Skyline of Abu Dhabi, UAE

12 hour layover in Abu Dhabi

On a twelve-hour layover in Abu Dhabi you'll be able to explore the city in more depth. If your legs are stiff after your flight, after stashing your baggage in an Abu Dhabi luggage locker , consider hiring a bicycle and pedaling along the cycle path on Corniche Road. It's an eight-kilometer-long ride which will reward you with incredible views of the Abu Dhabi skyline and Corniche Beach. There's lots of cafes along the way where you can stop to take a break or head over the breakwater to the Marina Mall , park your cycle and indulge in some luxurious retail therapy, or replenish your energy with a slap-up meal.

  • There are several cycle stations along the length of Corniche Road where you can pick up a bike, tandem, tricycle, and even one for three people.
  • The Marina Mall has an observation tower which is the best place to get panoramic views of Abu Dhabi or if you're on a late layover, is an incredible spot to watch the sunset from.

Abu Dhabi at night

24 hour layover in Abu Dhabi

Even a layover in Abu Dhabi that's twenty-four hours long will fly by – no pun intended – so try and plan as much as you can before getting there. Taking a full-day tour of the city is a must-do whether you do it by coach or in a privately driven limo. Spend time investigating the atmospheric souks where you can pick up some unusual souvenirs, buy leather goods, or stock up on spices. Hit the water for a private, sixty-minute speedboat ride and you'll get to see Abu Dhabi's amazing skyline from a different angle and it's one that will have you snapping selfies with it in the background. An overnight layover in Abu Dhabi gives you enough time to try all these experiences.

  • If you're on a long layover in Abu Dhabi and traveling with kids, you won't want to miss either the YAS Waterworld or Warner Bros World. They're both superb activities the kids will be thrilled with.
  • If speedboats aren't your thing, consider taking a more sedate dhow cruise instead or even hiring a dhow and captaining it yourself.

All about city tours in Abu Dhabi

City tours in Abu Dhabi allow you to experience this glittering city from all angles.

Between the skyscrapers lie immaculate palace lawns, adventure islands and natural refuges, such as Mangrove National Park. A city tour of Abu Dhabi places all the highlights of this diverse city and the great outdoors within reach.

There are several travel and tours agency providers in Abu Dhabi – Big Bus Tours has two routes, which can be enjoyed from a refreshingly breezy open-air bus.

Other excursions combine cultural attractions such as Heritage Village with Yas Island theme parks, while boat tours glide between landmarks on the glittering Arabian Gulf.

Abu Dhabi tour rides make seeing all the best parts of the city simple, so all you need to worry about is making unforgettable memories.

The best city tours in Abu Dhabi

See many of the most important landmarks on the Abu Dhabi city tour by bus – it’s a hop-on, hop-off experience which transports you between key attractions and neighbourhoods.

There are two routes. The red route focuses on urban attractions such as Corniche Beach, Marina Mall and Qasr al Hosn. The Presidential Palace and Emirates Palace can also be admired on this route.

The green route, meanwhile, begins at Abu Dhabi Mall and takes a wider tour of the Abu Dhabi region, with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque taking star position.

The green route stops on Yas Island, where a range of exciting family attractions lie, including Yas Waterworld, Yas Marina Circuit and Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi.

On this route, the Abu Dhabi tour bus also stops at Eastern Mangroves, on the cusp of the luscious natural landscapes of Mangrove National Park.

This Abu Dhabi tour is a planned excursion lasting for a full day, which can be booked with Etihad.

The first stop is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is a majestic place of worship and magnificently marble clad. Inside, you can expect to see intricate works of Islamic craftmanship.

Next up is Heritage Village, where traditional Bedouin life is revived via a reconstructed desert village complete with craft workshops. From here, it’s on to Saadiyat Island – where you’ll find the Louvre Abu Dhabi, an architectural wonder and home to impressive artefacts from across the globe.

This Abu Dhabi city tour package also comes with entry to one of Yas Island’s most popular attractions – Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi.

Here, you’ll get to experience the thrills of the famous Formula Rossa, one of the world's fastest rollercoasters.

Tour the city from the water with the Yellow Boats tour – to get spectacular views of Abu Dhabi’s most iconic buildings. In a coastal city whose history is entwined with the Arabian Gulf, travelling upon the waves on a guided tour just makes sense.

There are several Abu Dhabi city tour options with the Yellow Boats, which can be experienced in less than half a day in the morning, afternoon or evening.

The Corniche Tour takes just one hour, brushing the iconic coast and sweeping past Heritage Village towards man-made Lulu Island.

The Yas Tour provides plenty of facts about Abu Dhabi’s most action-packed area, and you’ll see Yas Marina and Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

During your tour, look out for marine life, which is abundant near the mangroves.

City tours in Abu Dhabi

An Abu Dhabi city tour is an enriching journey – there are several types, each presenting a unique itinerary and travel style. Here’s how to experience three of the best.

Getting to Abu Dhabi Mall

The red and green routes of Big Bus Tours intersect at Abu Dhabi Mall, so it’s a great place to hop on. You’ll find it just off Al Maiyani Street, a 12-minute drive from Corniche Beach.

Getting to Emirates Palace Marina

The Abu Dhabi Yellow Boats tour takes off from Emirates Palace Marina. This is located near the UAE Presidential Palace and Qasr al Watan.

Getting to Etihad’s tours

Etihad’s Modern Abu Dhabi City Tour, which comes with access to Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi, offers pickup from any location in central Abu Dhabi – airport or hotel pick-up can be requested when you book a tour.

Things to know before you go

Allow plenty of time for big attractions.

If you’re using a hop-on city tour to acquaint yourself with big attractions such as the Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi, then be sure to plan enough time for each segment of your day.

Allow two hours each for both the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi, which are both full of things to do. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the UAE’s largest mosque, with a main prayer hall that can accommodate 7,000 worshippers and plenty of smaller rooms to marvel at, too.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi has 23 permanent galleries to discover. Leave yourself with plenty of time to get the most from the Arabian peninsula’s largest art museum.

Prepare for warm weather

Abu Dhabi city tours are always warm, no matter what time of year you visit so it’s important to be well prepared. Pack plenty of water, sun cream and a hat for shelter from the sun, especially if your tour is via boat or open-top bus.

Long and lightweight clothing can help you to keep you cool – however, since many attractions are air-conditioned, it is also a good idea to carry a warmer layer, too.

We have talked in detail about both categories of transit visa in the latter section of this guide.

Book Your Flight Via Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways Airplane

Once you have decided on how long you plan on staying in Abu Dhabi on transit, you should go for booking your flight via Etihad Airways . Etihad Airways is the flag carrier airline of UAE which is operated from Abu Dhabi. Every flight of Etihad Airways first goes to Abu Dhabi before proceeding to the final destination.

The main reasons why we recommend booking from Etihad Airways are the exceptional discounts and perks that are offered to people transiting via Etihad. This is due to the collaboration between Etihad Airways and the Government of UAE which is aiming to increase tourism in Abu Dhabi.

IMPORTANT : Before moving on, keep in mind that the transit program offered by Etihad is only applicable when the total fare of your ticket is AED 500 ($136) for a one-way flight or AED 750 ($204) for the return flight.

There are two ways to book your flight via Etihad Airways in order to transit in Abu Dhabi.

  • Book a flight from directly your primary destination to your final destination with a minimum transit stay of more than 8 hours in Abu Dhabi. The flight will go from your primary destination to Abu Dhabi and then to the final destination in a single-booked flight trip with the same reference number / PNR No. (Passenger Name Record Number) . In this case, you get a transit time of between 8 and 21 hours as Etihad offers you several choices of choosing a flight. Since you are booking flights in one go, you don’t have much flexibility. However, it is a cheaper option as you are booking in one go. It is recommended for people choosing the 48-hour transit visa.
  • Book a flight from your primary destination to Abu Dhabi and then book another flight from Abu Dhabi to your final destination. The flight will go from your primary destination to Abu Dhabi and then a different flight trip booked on a different reference number / PNR No. (Passenger Name Record Number) . will take you from Abu Dhabi to the final destination. This is also known as a Multi-City Flight . In this case, you can choose a flight from your primary destination to Abu Dhabi and then book the next flight 3 days later as well. Since you are booking flights independently, you have much flexibility in when you plan to come and go. However, this is a pricier option since you are booking flights independently. It is recommended for people choosing the 96-hour transit visa.

Our team personally booked flights from London Heathrow (LHR) to Singapore Changi (SIN) for the same dates to see the difference in terms of pricing and flexibility. The following table explains the idea even better.

* Flight will be directed to Abu Dhabi before leaving for Final Destination ** Prices are for economy class

From the table, we evaluated that there is a significant difference of $246 when you book 2 flights independently vs when you book 2 flights directly via Etihad. Therefore, if you have a tight budget and plan on having a short transit in Abu Dhabi, you can opt for the first option and vice versa.

Editor’s Pick: Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways: The Ultimate Comparison

Key Takeaway

Booking a flight on the same PNR No. directly will cost you cheaper as compared to flights booked independently with different PNR No. However, the same PNR No. will generally offer you a shorter time span in Abu Dhabi as compared to different PNR No or a Multi-City Flight.

Perks of Booking via Etihad Airways

You can come to Abu Dhabi from several airlines but we recommend traveling via Etihad Airways for the following reasons.

  • With the “Transit Connect” program offered by Etihad Airways, travelers are allowed to stay for 1 night for FREE in a few of the 3-star hotels in Abu Dhabi.
  • With the “Stopover on Us” program offered by Etihad Airways, travelers are allowed to stay 2 nights for FREE in many of the 3-star and 4-star hotels in Abu Dhabi.
  • With the “Best of Abu Dhabi” program offered by Etihad Airways, travelers can get up to 40% off on selected 4-star and 5-star hotels in Abu Dhabi along with a 24-hour check-in facility, buffet breakfast, and choice of room selection.
  • Travelers coming to Abu Dhabi via Etihad Airways can also visit other Emirates of UAE including Dubai on a special bus service operated. For travelers of Etihad, the coach service is completely free.
  • With your Etihad ticket, you can get up to 20% off on selected restaurants, up to 30% off on selected theme parks in Dubai, up to 35% off on selected private beaches, and up to 20% off on selected spa centers.

Booking Your Hotel

Two women looking at hotel deals

The next step is to book your hotel. Prior to getting a visa, you must book your hotel as Section 5 of the visa application requires you to fulfill the details of your stay in Abu Dhabi. If you are traveling with Etihad, you are in luck because there are several free options as well as discounts.

Staying for 24 Hours

If you are just coming for a duration of 8-24 hours within Abu Dhabi, you are eligible for the Transit Connect program. In this program, you receive complimentary accommodation from Etihad Airways.

The two hotels offered in this program are Premier Inn Abu Dhabi International Airport Hotel and Premier Inn Abu Dhabi Capital Centre Hotel. If you prefer to stay close to the airport, choose the first one. On the other hand, if you prefer to stay close to the downtown area, go to the Capital Centre branch.

An important thing to keep in mind is that there are no complimentary breakfasts offered in this package. Besides, you have to follow the check-in time of 12 pm. However, when our team reached Abu Dhabi at 6 am, we managed to negotiate with the management and check in at around 7 am at the hotel.

Staying for 24-48 Hours

If you plan on staying for up to 2 days in Abu Dhabi, you are eligible for Etihad’s “Stopover on us” program. This program will offer you accommodation in selected 3-star and 4-star hotels for up to two nights completely free.

These hotels include Ramada by Wyndham Abu Dhabi Downtown, Traders Hotel at Qaryat Al Beri, TRYP by Wyndham Abu Dhabi, Centro Al Manhal, and both branches of Premier Inn Abu Dhabi. Our recommendation is Ramada by Wyndham Abu Dhabi Downtown.

Extras in this program include 24-hour check-in and complimentary in-room Wi-Fi.

Staying for 48-96 Hours

In case you have plans for a stopover for 4 days, the “Best of Abu Dhabi” program is offered by Etihad Airways where you get a 40% discount on selected 4-star and 5-star hotels. These hotels include

  • Anantara Eastern Mangroves Hotel
  • Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi – a concept by Hyatt
  • Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi
  • Fairmont Bab al Bahr
  • Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Residences Emirates Pearl
  • InterContinental Abu Dhabi
  • Novotel Abu Dhabi Al Bustan
  • Park Rotana Hotel
  • Royal M Hotel & Resort
  • Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri
  • Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri

We recommend staying at Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Residences Emirates Pearl or Anantara Eastern Mangroves Hotel. They have the finest amenities, top-of-the-line rooms, and exceptional accommodations for the guests.

You can choose a room of your choice and receive a buffet breakfast too. There is a 24-hour check-in facility and in-room Wi-Fi service as well. If you are looking for a top-notch experience in Abu Dhabi on a budget, this program is the one to go for.

IMPORTANT : We recommend booking your hotel 10 days in advance, especially if you are on the transit connect program as there are only 2 hotels offered in the program. The main reason for this is that sometimes, the hotels can be booked by others and you won’t be able to find a room close to your flight. This happened with one of our team members who was occupied and couldn’t book their hotel room on time. Therefore, be informed and try to book 10 days in advance for a secure reservation.

Type of Visa Offered for Transit / Stopover Passengers in Abu Dhabi

After completing your hotel booking, the next step is to obtain a visa for transit or stopover in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi offers three types of on-arrival visas for passengers coming from 69 countries including the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia (Check the table below for a complete list).

Passengers can opt for two types of visas. Even those passengers whose country’s name is not on the list can apply for the following visa categories. Also, check out our guide to most powerful passports in the world .

The following categories of visas are suitable for people transiting via Abu Dhabi to a third destination. The 48-Hour Transit Visa is ideal for short stays and the other Transit Visa is suitable for people planning for a 3-4 day stopover.

48-Hour Transit Visa (8-48 Hours)

If you are planning a short stay in Abu Dhabi, this is the visa you should go for. The stay in Abu Dhabi must be over 8 hours to qualify for this visa. The best part about applying for this visa is that it is free. It is recommended to apply 3-4 days in advance before your trip for this visa.

As our team applied for this category of passport, we got it within 2 hours without any hurdles. We also submitted some extra documents such as British Residence Permit to validate our authenticity. The visa application form took hardly 8 minutes to fill out. The primary benefit of this visa is that we got a free one-night stay at Premier Inn Hotel in Abu Dhabi. We have talked about this in detail in the next sections.

Transit Visa (8-96 Hours)

The second category of visa is for someone who wants to fully explore Abu Dhabi. It offers a maximum stay in Abu Dhabi of 4 days or 96 hours. The key difference between this visa and the 48-hour transit visa is the fee. The Transit Visa of Abu Dhabi offering a 96-hour stay can be obtained for a visa fee of AED 150 ($40). Apply for this visa at least 4 days before your trip so you get it on time.

It took longer for this visa as compared to the 48-hour transit visa. However, we still got it within 12 hours of application.

Conditions for Obtaining Transit Visa and 48-Hour Transit Visa

According to Abu Dhabi Resident’s Office and Etihad Airways, one must fulfill the following conditions to successfully obtain the visa.

  • You should have a confirmed return ticket from a third destination, 6-month validity on your passport, a completed visa application form, and a 6x6cm photograph.
  • Minors should be traveling with their parents and have a valid passport as well as a birth certificate picture. Dependents such as elders, spouses, and other relatives should have valid proof of relationship status such as a marriage certificate and passport.

Pro-tip — The visa application form has a section for additional documents. Utilize it and add all the additional documents such as a visa from the third destination where you are planning to go. This helps in the validation of your application and reduces the time for visa processing.

What to Bring From Abu Dhabi Transit?

Arabic perfume attar

When transiting via Abu Dhabi, we recommend buying some local items that are not usually available.

  • One top recommendation is an Arabic Perfume called “Attar”. It is a non-alcoholic perfume easily available in several parts of the UAE. The fragrance is extremely strong and lasts for days on clothes, even after washing.
  • Chocolates in Abu Dhabi are quite a famous item many travelers pack when coming from Abu Dhabi. Our recommendations would be Safari Chocolate, Al Nassma Chocolate, Blu Chocolate, Brix Desserts, Co Chocolat, and Coco Jalila. Dates are also quite popular all over the UAE. Ajwa Dates are our recommendation.
  • We also found several vendors for rugs and mats in Abu Dhabi. The small rugs can be quite intriguing for some buyers as they have a design in accordance with the local Arab culture. They are great decoration pieces.
  • Don’t miss out on the coffee of Abu Dhabi. It is one of the best ones you will ever taste. Local coffee brands of Abu Dhabi include Shaheen Coffee, Emirati Coffee Co, LOCAL Coffee, and Al Ameed Gourmet Coffee. If you are tired of your regular coffee, these options are surely going to please your taste buds. Coffee cutlery such as pots, mugs, and Moka Pots are also items you can get from Abu Dhabi.

Let’s Get to Abu Dhabi!

Based on all that we have mentioned above, we think that Abu Dhabi is a great destination for transiting. Being the capital of UAE, it is a place that you would really find appealing with its vibing culture, lights, and adventure. Our team had a great time in Abu Dhabi and we sure hope that you do too!

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Abu Dhabi on Transit and Stopover - FAQs

“Attar”, Chocolates, dates, cutlery items, coffee, rugs, and mats are some items you should get from Abu Dhabi in transit.

Etihad Airways’ stopover program is back — here’s how to book

Caroline Tanner

Editor's Note

Etihad Airways' stopover program is back this year. It allows travelers to schedule extended layovers through its base at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) at certain hotels for a discounted rate.

The national airline of the United Arab Emirates is back with the same three stopover options from last year: Best of Abu Dhabi, Stopover on Us and Transit Connect.

Stopover options

abu dhabi transit tour

With the Best of Abu Dhabi package , travelers can book stays from two to six nights at 11 four- and five-star hotels, up to 40% off.

This package is the most inclusive, offering 24-hour check-in, a breakfast buffet and in-room Wi-Fi. It also includes a choice of room types at select hotels like the Andaz Capital Gate , Fairmont Bab al Bahr and InterContinental Abu Dhabi, among others.

All hotels are subject to availability, and certain blackout dates may apply. Reservations must be made at least 72 hours before arrival.

The second option, Stopover on Us, allows travelers to book a one- or two-night complimentary stay in select three- and four-star hotels. Options include Ramada by Wyndham Abu Dhabi Downtown; Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri; and Premier Inn locations in the Abu Dhabi city center and at AUH.

Lastly, passengers can make the most of longer connections, anywhere from 10-24 hours, by booking a complimentary one-night stay at the Premier Inn Abu Dhabi International Airport or Premier Inn Abu Dhabi Capital Centre.

This is for economy, business-class and first-class ticket holders flying on eligible routes, which exclude certain routes within the Middle East. This must be booked at least five days prior to arrival, but bookings can only be made upfront for outbound flights. Once that flight is completed, you can request it be added to your return flight home.

Additional terms and conditions apply for all stopover bookings. They must be booked by Dec. 20 for travel completed by Dec. 31. Bookings must be made by travelers age 21 and older, and the offer isn't valid for frequent flyer redemption bookings, award upgrades or cash-plus-miles promotions. However, guests can earn points by participating in the Best of Abu Dhabi program, so be sure to add your loyalty number to your reservation upon arrival.

Additional terms and conditions apply to each program, so double-check before you book.

How to book an Etihad stopover

abu dhabi transit tour

To take advantage of one of the stopover programs, book a multicity flight through the airline for an economy, business-class or first-class fare, connecting through AUH.

For example, you could book a multicity trip from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM), connecting through Abu Dhabi each way, allowing you to participate in the stopover program on your outgoing flight. A two-night stay in Abu Dhabi would be eligible for the Best of Abu Dhabi or Stopover on Us program.

Once you have your booking reference and ticket number, take that information and select a participating hotel from the list.

Once you complete the booking, look out for an email with a hotel voucher.

Bottom line

These stopovers are available for adult passengers flying anywhere within the Etihad global network, transiting via Abu Dhabi.

Additionally, Etihad travelers can use their boarding pass for more deals and discounts on activities within a five-day period on the ground in Abu Dhabi, ranging from restaurants to theme parks and spas. Browse the list of eligible activities here .

Passengers can stay free for up to two nights and explore the area.

  • Passengers flying Etihad Airways can enjoy a complimentary stay in a three-star hotel for up to two nights during a transit in Abu Dhabi.
  • A premium stopover option for passengers who prefer luxury hotels features discounts of up to 40% off Abu Dhabi's exclusive hotels.
  • Passengers with 10 to 24-hour connection times can choose from three complimentary hotels accessible with a free bus shuttle near the airport.

The Middle East is one of the most frequent stopovers on intercontinental flights. The location has enabled it to excel in connecting passengers across North America, Europe, Asia, and even Oceania. These long flights often last more than 10 hours; for some passengers, spending a night in transit can be worth it. For passengers flying Etihad Airways , that hotel comes included.

Stay for a night, or two.

Passengers traveling through Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) on Etihad-operated or JetBlue codeshare flights are eligible for the offer. There are multiple options for travelers who want to explore the capital of the United Arab Emirates, depending on time and budget. To qualify for the free hotel stay, the flight must cost above $500 for a one-way trip and $750 for a return. Passengers must also book at least five days before arrival in Abu Dhabi.

The fine print.

Passengers looking to take advantage of the scheme must have permission to enter the country. This can be done with a pre-arranged visa to enter the UAE or upon arrival for passengers from eligible countries. The hotels do not include complimentary airport transfers, and the offer does not extend to hotel stays in Dubai or any other emirate in the United Arab Emirates. Bookings must be made on Etihad.com by a lead booker at least 21 years old, as direct bookings will not be accepted.

It is possible to add a hotel after purchasing the flight with your last name and reference number. A contact email is provided as well. The website does ask that passengers request any accommodation three days in advance. However, it never hurts to ask if you have an impending Etihad flight within the next three days.

Did you know we also have an aviation YouTube channel here?

For those looking to explore the city without spending the night, you can also use the Abu Dhabi public transport service for free. There are bus stops outside the departures area. The free A19 bus service even directly connects the airport to Yas Island and the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
