Geography of Zimbabwe

  • Expect the unexpected! No two safaris are the same, and that’s part of the adventure. Your guides are experts at tracking the animals in every area, but which animals you see, when, and what they’re up to is as wild as the savanna itself. You might come across lions enjoying a zebra carcass or antelope galloping across the plains. It’s even possible that your best shot at seeing these animals is right around your camp or lodge.
  • What’s a game drive? A safari game drive is when you go out in a vehicle in search of the animals in their most natural habitat. The vehicles are often 4x4 drive open-air vehicles and get as close as safely possible to the animals so that you can see them in all their wild majesty.
  • Game drives are not off-roading adventures – In order to preserve the habitats, the game drives stick to the established trails and routes rather than just crossing the plains at random, but these trails were established by the experts to maximize the opportunities to see wildlife on your game drive. These drives tend to be leisurely, allowing the best chance to take in the surrounding environment and hopefully spot some amazing wildlife.
  • Game drives generally take place in the cool morning or late afternoon – remember, the best way to see the animals of the safari in action is to follow their behavior, and they tend to be most active when the sun isn’t as high in the sky.
  • The length of a game drive is generally around 3 or 4 hours , but this varies based on what your guide feels is the best way to track the animals.
  • Alternatives to game drives on a safari vacation might include an aerial tour in a hot air balloon, mountain biking and horseback riding, hikes, a river cruise to see the animals via the water, or a nighttime game drive that shows off the nocturnal wildlife of Africa.
  • The atmosphere of a safari vacation is relaxed but immersive . Imagine being literally inside your favorite Animal Planet documentary. Your itinerary won’t be jam-packed with things to do, but the marvels of simply looking out your window to a giraffe grazing in a nearby tree or seeing an elephant passing casually by the lodge is an unforgettable experience.
  • The safari experience changes based on the season – in each region, the dry and wet seasons bring with them different wildlife behaviors and habits and even migrations, so if there is an animal you know you want to see, let us know so we can recommend the best time to travel.
  • Safari vacations usually combine multiple wildlife reserves , from national parks to private game concessions. Getting from one camp to the next might include a long drive through the plains or a scenic flight on an 8-passenger propeller plane.

  • While you are in major cities, you will likely have access to ATMs that work with most major international credit cards (local bank cards will probably not work). You should expect a marginal international transaction fee.
  • Cash can be used for anything you’ll need while on the safari itself, especially in the bush.
  • You can exchange your money most easily at the international airports upon arrival or at a bank with presentation of your passport if necessary.
  • Avoid paying with travelers checks. These are not accepted in most places, so it’s safer to just stick with your card.

Spot the big five on your safari adventure.

Safari tours in Africa are just as diverse as the continent itself, though these types of trips typically require a large sum of money. Whether you want to spend a few days gorilla trekking in Uganda or a couple weeks spotting the "big five" – lions, leopards, African elephants, rhinos and Cape buffalos – in South Africa, you'll find an array of tours to best suit your needs. To help you narrow down your options, U.S. News compiled a list of 12 can't-miss African safari tours. Read on to find your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Note: Some of the African countries in this article may require travelers to get an entry visa and certain vaccinations in order to visit. Jump to the list of visa and vaccination requirements by country at the bottom of this page for more information.

&Beyond

Visitors who don't want to sacrifice creature comforts while on safari will appreciate &Beyond's offerings. During the tour operator's 10-day Kings of the Jungle safari – which starts at $11,340 per person – travelers will see breathtaking natural wonders like the Ngorongoro Crater and the Maasai Mara savanna. But the highlight of this journey is its four-night stay at Tanzania's Serengeti National Park . After watching animals like wildebeest and zebras partake in the great migration while also spotting lions, giraffes and more, vacationers retreat to high-end tents and lodges with private bathrooms.

Wilderness Safaris

For some of Africa's most jaw-dropping scenery, opt for the seven-night Namibian Adventure Safari tour offered by Wilderness Safaris. This weeklong trip features visits to the Namib Desert's dune-filled Sossusvlei region (which you may recognize from the film "Mad Max: Fury Road") and the mountainous Palmwag Concession – a protected area with springboks, giraffes, black rhinos and more. The package's per person fee starts at $6,725, which covers most meals, park entrance fees, and transfers from Namibia's capital Windhoek and between the safari destinations. It also covers your stay at properties like the fully solar-powered Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and the five-star Little Kulala lodge amid the stunning desert.

Wild Rwanda Safaris

Adventurous travelers sticking to a more conservative budget should consider Wild Rwanda Safaris' Bwindi Gorilla Safari. The three-day package features a full day in southwestern Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (a haven for silverback gorillas) and an adjacent Batwa Pygmy community. Wild Rwanda Safaris allows guests to choose between midrange, luxury and super luxury accommodation, which can help keep costs down if necessary. The company's packages include the $700 permit required to visit the gorilla park. The round-trip journey by safari vehicle to and from Kigali, Rwanda, and English-speaking guide services are also covered in all rates. The tour can begin from Kampala, Uganda, as well, although you'll spend longer on the road to the park.

Nomad Tanzania

African Safari in Tanzania

Sign up for Nomad Tanzania's Southern Tanzania safari and you're bound to get an up-close look at Tanzania's diverse wildlife. What's more, lodging at the company's campsites, select meals, and flights to and from Dar es Salaam are factored into the package's prices. Expect to pay a minimum of $5,700 per person; prices vary depending on the time of year, and the tour isn't offered in April and May.

Micato Safaris

If you want to explore multiple destinations while on safari with plenty of comfort (but a price tag to match), book the 15-day Micato Grand Safari. This outing by Micato Safaris starts with a two-day visit to Nairobi, Kenya, before continuing to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Maasai Mara National Reserve, and the Amboseli and Serengeti national parks for wildlife-viewing excursions. During your trip, you'll see Mount Kilimanjaro as zebras, gazelles and more roam in the foreground. The package costs at least $22,450 per person (based on double occupancy rates) and includes a hot air balloon ride, a camel tour led by members of the Samburu tribe, and lodging at upscale properties like Serengeti's Four Seasons outpost. The company also offers various extensions allowing you to explore other parts of Africa, from the island paradise of Zanzibar to the deserts of Namibia.

Rothschild Safaris

If your ideal safari vacation consists of customizing your trip from start to finish, consider an outing with Rothschild Safaris. The company offers itineraries in locales like Zambia and Madagascar , but if you're hoping to catch a glimpse of the big five animals, the Essence of Tanzania safari is a good bet. This nine-day experience, which embarks from Arusha and returns there by plane, includes game-viewing drives in Tarangire National Park and accommodations like canvas tents and farmhouse lodges. Elephants, zebras and lions are just some of the animals you may spot during your journey. You'll also have the opportunity to go on a nighttime safari to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Discover Africa

For an inside-out trip through the natural wonders of Botswana, Discover Africa's nine-day Epic Botswana Adventure is a formidable option. You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for elephant spotting – before moving onto the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals from leopards to rhinos. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife like zebras and buffalo on the savanna as well as salt pans from a former lake. You'll stay in upscale lodges and campsites within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person), but international flights are excluded.

Wild Wings Safaris

adventure trips in africa

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush and Beach Safari. You'll start off visiting some of South Africa's historic sites from the Boer wars, before moving on to the Phinda Private Game Reserve, which doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the big five without too many crowds. The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. As far as safaris go, this one is an affordable option, starting at about $2,795 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Cuckoo Safaris

Starting at $3,750 per person, the tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights; the company does allow the tour to be customized on request.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Africa Safari

The most out-there tour anywhere.

Its name means “sunny place” in the Berber tongue, but “Africa” may as well be a synonym for “vastness.” A truly massive continent comprising over 20% of the planet’s available land, Africa is home to the world’s largest desert, its longest river, its hottest temperatures, and hundreds of dialects and cultures spread among a billion people. But as mind-boggling as it seems at first, you’ll be amazed how intimate it feels once you get to know it. This is adventure’s last great frontier. Come blaze some trails.

Pioneering World Firsts

We proudly pioneered the first commercial treks of Mount Kilimanjaro‘s Remote Northern Circuit and Shira Routes and have developed new trekking routes in the Ruwenzori, High Atlas and Simien Mountains. Our Madagascar Adventure also gets plenty of attention for its unique itinerary.

Quality equipment

Adventure travel by its very nature will put you amongst the elements. You’ll be comforted to know that our camping based treks are supported by quality equipment, starting with tents, sleeping mats, kitchen services, dining tent with chairs and tables and safety equipment.

Choose from a range of quality accommodations

Whether you plan to camp, prefer a lodge based trip, or are looking for luxury, we offer a wide range of African adventures to suit various budgets and interests. We can also tailor a trip to suit your needs.

Innovative itineraries

Africa is a diverse and contrasting continent, encompassed by our broad and exciting program of active, touring and safari itineraries. We constantly strive to highlight the unique—touring Madagascar’s iconic sights but also exploring its lesser know national parks, spotting wildlife from dugout canoes in the Okavango Delta, or traversing the little-used mountain trails of Mount Kenya.

Custom built, reliable transport

Trained drivers and well maintained vehicles, which are purpose built for our safaris, are what you can expect when on the lookout for Africa’s Big 5 game animals. Safari transport is designed with wildlife viewing in mind, providing unobstructed views and in most cases forward facing seats and air-conditioning.

Our all inclusive approach

Including as many quality services at the best prices make our adventures great value for money. Having essential items like meals, sightseeing and national park fees or camping equipment included in the trip cost allows you to better budget for your big adventure and eliminates the risk of having to carry large sums of money around with you on your journey.

Thoughtful Travel

Responsible Travel practices are at the heart of every program we offer in Africa. When you book one of our adventures you’re supporting true sustainability in the protection of local communities, natural environments and wildlife.

Expert Guides

Africa is a complex continent that requires guides with vast knowledge of local landscapes, flora and fauna, as well as rich local cultures. Our line up of guides is second-to-none; passionate individuals who will truly enhance your African experience.

No Single Supplements on treks

Travelling solo? On our treks we’ll match you with another traveller of the same gender so that you won’t be charged anything extra for the vast majority of our treks. If you prefer a guaranteed single room on tour we can also arrange that for a small additional charge.

The remarkable Masai people&#160;-&#160;<i>Photo:&#160;Ian Williams</i>

On a continent rich in wildlife and cultural diversity that is famed for its spectacular landscapes, the importance of sustainable travel is high. While we aim to minimise our impact on the natural environment by practicing the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', our adventures support local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities. Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct, Child Welfare Code of Conduct and Porter Welfare Policy ensure the well-being of animals and children we encounter, as well as the porters we employ on Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Mount Kenya and in the Ruwenzori Mountains.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3-4 star properties that are generally centrally located, atmospheric and reliable and where we have seen a good track record with traveller satisfaction over many years. At times, accommodation will be chalet style with a bedroom and bathroom attached to a lounge area. Very occasionally, hotels may have shared bathroom facilities.

Safari lodges

In game parks, national parks and rural locations we use properties that reflect the character of the area. They are generally one storey high and will be a collection of individual bungalows or a series of adjoining rooms, based around a central main dining/lounge area.

Luxury safari lodges

Luxury lodges differ to standard safari lodges in that they feature extra facilities such as swimming pools, satellite TVs or rooms with private balconies. You will find this type of accommodation in East Africa at Serene Lodges and at boutique, 4-5 star lodges in Southern Africa.

Found in Morocco, a riad is a traditional house often located in the ancient medina (walled city) and usually includes an internal courtyard with a garden or water feature. Generally all rooms are a different shape and size, adding to the character. Riads range from elaborate traditional tiled decor to ultra modern furnishings.

A homestay describes any stay with a local family where we share their current home. Sleeping arrangements may be dormitory style and bathroom facilities will generally be shared. The standard is often basic but the experience is unbeatable.

Permanent safari camps

The perfect way to experience Africa wilderness; think of this as a tented hotel. Rooms are individual tents with built-in floors, doors and windows and include an en suite bathroom. Tents are usually placed on a solid structure and may also be sheltered under a solid roof. Guest tents are generally clustered around a main central dining/lounge area and power is either solar or by generator.

Luxury permanent safari camps

A luxury permanent safari camp differs to a standard permanent safari camp in that they feature extra facilities such as swimming pools, satellite TVs or rooms with private balconies; all with premium views.

Bedouin camps

Found in desert regions in North Africa and the Middle East, these are permanent safari camps using traditional Bedouin tents and decor. Bathroom facilities may be basic as water is scarce in the desert. Power is limited to specific hours of the day and is usually by generator when available. Kerosene lanterns or candles provide night time lighting, adding to the ambience.

Camping refers to any accommodation using mobile tents, ranging from large dome tents to small trekking tents. The local camp crew erects the tents or, on a limited participation safari, guests are expected to assist with this process. Group camping equipment (dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet tent) is supplied. Bathroom facilities are shared, and on rare occasions, bush toileting may be required.

Mountain huts

Mountain huts can be considered camping in a basic shelter. These generally consist of dormitory rooms with shared bathroom facilities and in the majority of cases are not exclusive to World Expeditions guests. Some mountain huts have cooking facilities that will be used by your crew; others have separate shelters for this.

Africa multi-active tours

Hiker in Drakensberg Mountains

There’s more than one way to go on safari

We like to mix things up in  Africa  – a little horse-riding on the beach here, some desert trekking there, maybe a cheeky detour for a swim in a volcanic lake. Why search for zebras and ring-tailed lemurs from a Jeep when you can see them from a mountain bike, or on your own two feet? We venture into the canyons and gorges of  Madagascar , the High Atlas Mountains of  Morocco , and the off-grid wilderness of  South Africa  – but not so off-grid we can’t enjoy a glass of the local pinotage. Multi-active adventures in Africa are about breaking a sweat and having a roaring old time. Leave your binoculars at the door.

Our Africa multi-active trips

Africa multi-active highlights, why choose us.

We’ve been running our Active Adventures for over a decade, which means we know the best local suppliers and experts on the ground to give you an exciting and safe experience.

Don’t know what a carabiner is? Or how to secure a harness? No worries! Our experienced local leaders will show you the ropes and give you safety briefings – while also showing you the sights.

Our leaders are specially trained to run Active Adventures, so you're well taken care of. We run safety assessments on all our activities to meet local standards as well as our own comprehensive safety policy.

Our trips are about discovering a new destination and unlocking new skills – like horse riding, canyoneering or mountain biking. They're designed to teach you something new (and maybe even make you an enthusiast, too!).

We use travel as a force for good. We have close relationships with the communities we visit and always use local adventure providers on our trips. By traveling with us, you'll also be empowering local communities.

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re traveling to improve the planet.

More Information About Africa

African cuisine varies widely by region. Sample dishes like tagine in Morocco, injera in Ethiopia, bobotie in South Africa, jollof rice in West Africa, and couscous in North Africa.

The best time to visit Africa largely depends on the specific region and the type of experience you seek. Generally, Africa experiences diverse climates, and the optimal time for travel varies by destination. If you are planning a wildlife safari in East or Southern Africa, the dry season, typically from June to October, is the ideal time. During this period, animals gather around water sources, making it easier to spot them. Conversely, if you aim to witness the Great Migration in the Serengeti, consider visiting between July and September. However, for those interested in exploring North Africa or enjoying the beaches along the Mediterranean, spring and autumn are pleasant times with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. It's crucial to research your chosen destination's specific climate and seasonality to ensure a memorable and enjoyable trip to this diverse and captivating continent.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, is a world-renowned trekking destination. The trek to its summit offers a challenging but rewarding experience, taking you through diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforests to arctic-like landscapes near the summit. Reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point, is a remarkable achievement, and the views from the top are truly breathtaking.

In Morocco, Mount Toubkal in the High Atlas Mountains is a favorite trekking destination. This trek provides a fascinating blend of Berber culture, stunning alpine scenery, and challenging terrain. The ascent to Toubkal's summit allows trekkers to take in panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, and it's a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Morocco's mountainous beauty.

For a different kind of trekking experience, the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa offer a range of hiking trails suitable for various fitness levels. The Drakensberg, or "Dragon Mountains," are known for their dramatic landscapes, including impressive peaks, lush valleys, and cascading waterfalls. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual explorer, the Drakensberg Mountains offer something for everyone, from day hikes to multi-day adventures.

The best places for a safari in Africa include Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro, Botswana's Okavango Delta and Chobe, Zambia's South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi, and South Africa's Kruger National Park and private reserves. Each offers unique wildlife experiences and stunning landscapes for memorable safaris.

#1 glide along the waterways of the okavango delta on a traditional mokoro safari.

**Quick insight:  A Mokoro is essentially a traditional dug-out canoe which is used to traverse and explore the narrow waterways and complex, yet thriving, channels of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, as well as discover hidden islands that are inaccessible throughout the rest of the year.

Declared a  UNESCO World Heritage Site  as well as one of the  Seven Natural Wonders of Africa,  the glorious Okavango Delta is by far one of Africa’s most fascinating and captivating regions and destinations to discover and explore. The Delta is not only deemed to be one of the world’s premier wilderness areas, but largest inland deltas on the planet, boasting one of the most unique, intricate, and intriguing ecosystems to ever exist.

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life

This vast and virtually untouched freshwater wetland area fed by the Okavango River, is an astonishing and endless oasis characterized by a complex network of channels, islands, floodplains, riverine woodlands, marshlands, and lagoons that offer travellers, wildlife and nature enthusiasts, avid adventurers, and globe trotters a truly immersive experience and out-of-this-world perspective into a world of thriving waterways and vast flourishing wetlands teeming with wildlife, birdlife, luscious vegetation, magnificent landscapes, breathtaking surroundings, and so much more – you simply have to see it to believe it!

The Okavango Delta truly is a water wonderland in every way – this undoubtedly makes exploring the Delta by Mokoro safari / river safari the very best way to discover and experience everything it has to offer.

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life

Enjoying a Mokoro safari journey through the Delta is not only a unique safari experience that is entirely exclusive to the Okavango Delta, it is also one of the top and most thrilling adventures you can only do in Africa. Going on a traditional Mokoro safari in the glorious Okavango Delta gives you the opportunity to see, discover, encounter, and explore hidden gems, secret spots, as well as witness diverse and rare wildlife and birdlife sightings you might not otherwise have spotted or seen on a traditional game drive.

Nowhere else in the world can you experience the sublime serenity of being poled along in a traditional dugout canoe as birds like jacanas and herons walk among the lilies, elephants arrive to feed on the soft grass, and sitatunga antelope retreat shyly into the reeds. It’s all of this and so much more that makes going on a traditional Mokoro safari in the Okavango Delta one of the top adventure experiences in Africa!

#2 Trek Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life - Mount Kilimanjaro

Few experiences can compete with summiting the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro and standing at the top of the highest point in Africa as the sun rises in the distance!

If you think ‘adventure in Africa’, summiting the highest mountain peak in Africa – AKA: Mount Kilimanjaro – is undoubtedly one of the first things that come to mind, especially if you’re an avid adrenalin junkie and die-hard hiker and / or climber. Located in the captivating and vastly diverse East African country of Tanzania, the magnificent mountainous marvel that is Mount Kilimanjaro is not only the highest mountain peak in Africa, but the largest free-standing mountain rise in the world (this means that Kilimanjaro does not form part of a mountain range, but instead, stands entirely alone – tall, grounded, strong, independent, fierce & free), standing tall at a staggering +/- 5,895 meters / 19,341 feet above sea level.

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life - Mount Kilimanjaro

Its prestigious high-rise status paired with the fact that it is without a doubt one of the most phenomenal natural wonders and breathtaking mountains in all of Africa, not to mention a once-in-a-lifetime adventure experience, has made standing on the peak of the world’s tallest freestanding mountain one of the top experiences on countless adventure travellers’ bucket-lists – with good reason too! For many, summiting Mount Kilimanjaro is so much more than ticking a thrilling experience off their Africa adventure bucket list – It’s a yearning for the Roof of Africa. An unstoppable hunger for conquering Uhuru Peak (the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro), and a craving for the raw, real, rugged, and once-in-a-lifetime adventure that  ONLY  a Mount Kilimanjaro climb can provide.

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life - Mount Kilimanjaro

Also called a  stratovolcano  (a term used to describe a very large volcano made of ash, lava, and rock), Kilimanjaro is essentially a dormant volcano made up of three cones visible from miles away: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the summit of the mountain and the tallest of the three volcanic formations. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo is dormant, however, the possibility that it could potentially erupt again is there. Before your head starts spinning and you fall down a deep & dark rabbit hole, to help set your mind at ease, scientists estimate that the last time Mount Kilimanjaro erupted was 360,000 years ago. So, while there is a possibility, the likelihood is incredibly slim. The highest point on Kibo’s crater rim is called Uhuru, the Swahili word for “freedom.” The mountain is also known for its snow-capped peak; however, scientists warn that the snow might disappear within the next 20 years or so – which is nothing short of tragic. But, if there’s one thing that is, and will forever remain true, irrespective of everything, it’s the undeniable and breathtaking natural beauty of the one and only Mount Kilimanjaro along with its snow-capped peaks, lush forests, and sweeping views that are simply unparalleled. There truly is nothing quite like it – and we dare you to prove us otherwise!

According to Tanzania National Parks, Mount Kilimanjaro attracts about 50,000 climbers a year, which is roughly 50 times the number of people attempting either Everest or Denali (formerly Mount McKinley) in Alaska. And, while Kilimanjaro ranks high on the to-do list of serious mountaineers, scaling the 5,895-metre (19,341 ft) dormant volcano requires no serious technical skill and is considered ‘doable’ for anyone with a moderately high fitness level.

But do not be fooled into thinking that it will be a walk in the park. Oh no! Kilimanjaro treks can take anywhere from 5 to 7 days depending on the route & when / what time of year you decide to climb it. Over the years, new routes and camps have helped lengthen and flatten the ascent, as well as provided more opportunities for climbers to acclimatize. But as far as high-altitude trekking goes, Kilimanjaro is definitely one of the highest ascents that can be completed in such a short period of time.

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life - Mount Kilimanjaro

However, high altitude and low success rates shouldn’t deter you. With the right level of preparation Kilimanjaro can be safely conquered by those up for the challenge.

**When is the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro? Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an adventure of a lifetime, and one that should not be taken lightly. To ensure you have the best experience possible, it is important to know when the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is as it can have a major impact on your overall climbing experience. While it is entirely possible to climb Mount Kilimanjaro right throughout the year, certain months and seasons are far better than others. That being said –  The two main Kilimanjaro trekking seasons  are between  January – March  and  June – October   (Dry Season).

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life - Mount Kilimanjaro

Many deem the  dry season (June – October)  to be the very best time of year to climb Mount Kilimanjaro as the weather is generally dry and sunny with clear views, blue skies and temperatures ranging from the low 50s to the low 70s. This makes for ideal climbing conditions, as the trails that lead to the summit are not muddy, largely due to the low rainfall during this time, and the temperatures are just right. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro during its dry season (June – October) is also a great time if you want to  catch a glimpse of the Great Wildebeest Migration  as well as enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape while you ascend.

**Tip:  While the months of June – October are considered the best time of year to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (as this period is the driest and warmest months of the year), it is important to note that the weather can be unpredictable. Due to the often-unpredictable weather patterns it is crucial to always be ready and prepared for all types of weather conditions that may come your way.

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life - Mount Kilimanjaro

The  January – March  season is  often colder and snowier  than June – October, but it is  less popular with tourists  as the latter corresponds with summer holidays. During the  wet seasons (April to May and November to December) , the mountain can be extremely slippery, with frequent rains / storms and mudslides, making the climb much more challenging and dangerous. However, some people still choose to climb the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro during the wet season as it can offer unique views and experiences. This especially applies to experienced and highly skilled climbers.

If you want to avoid the large crowds of people that climb during  high season (June to September) , make sure you book your trek between December and March. However, you will find that the weather is colder in the evenings during that period. You will also encounter snow on the summit as well as a little rain along the way.

** Check out our ‘ When is the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro ’ blog to find out everything you need to know about the highest mountain peak in Africa, including the various routes to reach the Mount Kilimanjaro summit.

#3 Embark on a Gorilla Trekking Adventure in Rwanda

Calling all thrill-seekers, daring explorers, and avid adventurers – this unique and beyond exhilarating africa-only experience is for you plus, absolutely anyone else eager to tick this thrilling adventure off their bucket-list.

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life

Africa is widely renowned for its once-in-a-lifetime wildlife sightings and encounters. However, few are as highly sought-after (or as frequently featured on the cover of travel magazines or at the very top of avid traveller’s bucket lists of must-do once-in-a-lifetime adventure experiences) as Rwanda where avid wildlife enthusiasts and thrill-seeking adventurers from across the globe have the incredible opportunity of witnessing  Mountain Gorillas  in their natural habitat.

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life

It therefore comes as no surprise that Rwanda is deemed the best place in Africa to engage in what is arguably the world’s single most enriching, exhilarating, and powerful wildlife experiences, sought-after safari adventures, and thrilling wildlife encounters – trekking mountain gorillas through the steep bamboo and forest-swathed slopes of the Virunga Mountains.  It’s here, in the Virunga Massifs, where you’ll find Volcanoes National Park – home to the largest mountain gorilla population in the world.

As Rwanda is one of only three places in the world where you can see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, visiting this extraordinary African country and embarking on an exhilarating gorilla trekking expedition is so much more than a tick off the bucket list – it truly is a humbling, enriching, and powerful experience that you’ll undoubtedly remember and cherish for the rest of your life.

#8 Take to the skies & go hot air ballooning in the Serengeti National Park

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life

The Serengeti National Park is widely regarded as the greatest wildlife destination and National Parks on earth. Home to one of the world’s greatest concentrations of wildlife and vast open grasslands, the Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s flagship conservation area and a must-do for first-time and returning safari goers alike. Meaning “endless plains” in the Maasai language, the Serengeti National Park is one of the most celebrated wilderness areas in the world.

Spanning northern Tanzania, the world-renowned Serengeti National Park is not only Tanzania’s flagship conservation area, but one of the greatest national parks in Africa, if not the world. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Serengeti is regarded as one of the most celebrated global wilderness areas. The Serengeti National Park covers an immense 14 800 km² (5 700 square miles) on Tanzania’s northern border with Kenya, encompassing up to 50% of the wider Serengeti–Mara ecosystem – Making the Serengeti the most famous protected wilderness area in all of Africa.

While the Serengeti National Park is notorious for its vastly diverse and abundant wildlife, it is best known as the iconic site of the world-renowned  Annual Great Wildebeest Migration . The Great Wildebeest Migration – Regarded as the ‘Seventh New Wonder of the World’, one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles & natural phenomenon to ever exist in the natural world, as well as declared the ‘The greatest show on earth’ – is undoubtedly one of the top (if not  THE  top) wildlife spectacles in Africa.

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life

Witnessing The annual Great Migration, also known as the Gnu Migration, Serengeti Migration and Masai Mara Migration, up-close, in action, and first-hand is the chief reasons why so many travelers’ tourists, globe trotters, and avid nature and wildlife enthusiast venture to Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. There are few things that can compare to witnessing one of the greatest and grandest wildlife gatherings and spectacles in its full all-mighty force – It’s an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime experience to say the least!

The Great Migration Is a never-ending movement which includes millions of wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, eland, and impala circling and venturing across the vast Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in Tanzania and Kenya, chasing the rains in a constant search for food, moving from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park into the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya by crossing the great Mara River.

* Interesting Fact:  The Mara River crossing of The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most thrilling and equally daunting endeavours to witness and experience – often referred to as “the greatest show on earth”. The great Mara River is both surrounded by and filled with Africa’s top predators, making it an  INCREDIBLY  risky journey for all of the wildlife species taking part in the Annual Great Migration. However, despite the great danger that awaits these animals – the Mara River crossing cannot be avoided and is a vital component of the Great Migration cycle / movement.

Nile crocodiles and other predators are patiently waiting for the right moment to strike and make the wildebeest their prey. Not to mention the legendary Serengeti lions – some 3,000 of them – who lie in wait, along with leopards, cheetahs, and countless hungry hyenas all jumping at the bid to get in on the action.

There is absolutely no denying that witnessing and experiencing the Masai Mara / Serengeti Great Migration should be on everyone’s African safari travel bucket-list!

Hold on, the excitement isn’t over yet, not by a long shot! Imagine if you could witness this glorious wildlife spectacle along with the sensational wilderness wonder that is the Serengeti National Park all while floating over the Serengeti plains on a  hot air balloon safari ?! Well, it’s time to turn your dream into a reality, and trust us, this is one magical and magnificent safari experience you’ll never forget!

So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime hot air balloon safari adventure as you float over the spectacular Serengeti National Park at sunrise for a bird’s eye view of Mother Nature’s greatest show. Breathe in the fresh air while you sip your morning coffee or savour your afternoon sundowner. This is without a doubt one of the best and most riveting ways to start or end a day in Africa!

#9 Go on a walking safari in South Luangwa National Park & explore the bush on foot

Are you ready to take a  WALK  on Africa’s wild side? If the answer is ‘ YES! ’ (which it absolutely should be), go ahead and ditch the safari vehicle and explore the bush on foot instead!

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life

If you’re eager to experience something slightly more  wild, daring, and down-right thrilling, going on an exhilarating and adventure-filled  walking safari  through the untamed African bushveld should be right at the top of your African safari travel bucket-list. Exploring the African bushveld on foot encourages you to fully immerse yourself in the vast and untamed wilderness as well as gives you the unbelievable opportunity of witnessing magnificent up-close wildlife sightings and encounters you only tend to read about in books and travel magazines.

Loudly and proudly claiming the title as  ‘The Home of the Walking Safari’,  there is no better place to embark on an unforgettable walking safari adventure and get up-close-and-personal with Africa’s vast diversity of wildlife than Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. Considered the birthplace of walking safaris, going on an exhilarating walking safari in the renowned South Luangwa National Park promises to exceed all your expectations – Because a walking safari in South Luangwa National Park is not only regarded as a thrilling wilderness experience / adventure / activity, but rather a way of life.

If you decide to venture off-the-beaten-path (quite literally) and go on a walking safari adventure on your visit to this iconic National Park you’ll have the additional privilege of traversing the untamed landscapes of South Luangwa National Park on foot while being guided by an exceptional, highly experienced, and incredibly knowledgeable wildlife guide or ranger.

Beyond the obvious thrill, going on a walking safari gives you the opportunity to experience South Luangwa National Park from an entirely different perspective, as well as see and hear the small things that may have gone unnoticed, or you may have overlooked / might’ve missed otherwise. Not to mention, getting to go on an unforgettable and adventure-filled walking safari in one of Africa’s most remote and unspoilt locations truly is a bucket list worthy African safari adventure experience in itself.

Beyond its prestigious title as ‘The Home of the Walking Safari’, South Luangwa National Park is arguably one of the greatest wildlife-viewing destinations in Africa. Boasting among the highest concentration of wildlife in all of Africa, this sought-after Zambian National Park is regarded as one of the very best places to see large herds of buffalo, elephants, giraffes, African wild dogs, leopards, lions, and hippos in their natural habitat, to mention merely a few. Another one of South Luangwa National Park’s wildlife highlights takes place in late October, just before the start of the rain, when thousands of hippos gather in the Luangwa River’s deeper pools – It truly is a remarkable spectacle to witness as they jostle and fight for space. Boasting such a vast diversity and incredible abundance of wildlife your South Luangwa walking safari will undoubtedly be filled with the most magnificent up-close wildlife sightings and encounters.

**BONUS:  You don’t have to share space with many other people either. Zambia is off the beaten track without the hordes of crowds you can expect in popular safari destinations, promising a more exclusive safari experience.

#10 Swim at the edge of Nature’s Ultimate Infinity Pool – Devil’s Edge!

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life

Another one of Africa’s most unique, not to mention beyond thrilling, experiences is taking a dip right at the edge of nature’s ultimate infinity pool – Devil’s Edge! Located right at the edge of the mighty and majestic Victoria Falls (situated on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls), Devil’s Edge is a rock pool offering adventurers all the thrill and rush of pure adrenaline they seek. Boasting a sheer drop and an up-close-and-personal view off the Falls – Devil’s Edge is in fact the ultimate infinity pool not only in Africa, but perhaps the world too!

During the waterfall’s peak flow season around the month of June, the mile-wide chasm is filled with the thunder of water descending at a rate of 3,000 tones per second. We highly advise that you avoid taking a swim or even dipping your toe in the daring Devil’s Pool – well unless you want to be swept away to an untimely demise. But all jokes aside, this time of year is a hard no when it comes to ticking this adventure experience off your bucket-list.

However, here’s the bright side you were waiting for! You are free to swim as close to the edge of the pool from the month of September right through to December when the river flow is at a safe level. The exposed natural rock walls also act as a barrier to prevent you from being carried over. While going for a swim in Victoria Falls’ Devil’s Edge may seem somewhat daunting at first, once you’re in, you’ll have the time of your life. Not to mention the view from the edge is beyond breathtaking! This is one bucket-list worthy adventure experience you absolutely don’t want to miss out on when visiting Africa.

#11 Visit Cape Town’s famous Boulders Beach & its thriving colony of African Penguins

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life

But did you know that Africa, more specifically Cape Town, has its own special share of penguins too? Adding to your list of unique experiences and things you can only do in Africa, make your way to the continent’s southwestern coast – the glorious Western Cape – to view these waddling aquatic birds – AKA African Penguins (also lovingly referred to by Capetonians as ‘Cape Town’s favourite marine life locals’ & ‘the ultimate Cape Town cool kids) – in their natural habitat.

There are a number of African Penguin colonies found between Namibia and South Africa’s South Coast. However, Boulders Beach in Cape Town is home to the most famous colony of African Penguins and is one of the only places in the world where you can get up close and personal with these cool and charismatic ocean locals. This makes visiting the African Penguin colony at Boulders Beach a not-to-be-missed bucket-list worthy experience in every way.

In addition to seeing the remarkable colony of African Penguins from the African Penguin Viewing Site in Boulders Beach, it is also one of the only places in the world that gives you the incredible and unforgettable opportunity to experience a variety of other once-in-a-lifetime adventures such as kayaking and swimming among the penguins as well as enjoying a laid-back beach day with them right by your side – there truly is nothing quite like it!

Your ticket is valid for the entire day. You can choose to exit and re-enter as it suits you (this only applies to the day your ticket was purchased). ** Visit the  SANParks website  for more information regarding Boulders Beach’s Conservation Fees.

#12 Sleep outside under the stars in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans

15 Adventures in Africa you must do at least once in your life

Botswana is not only regarded as one of the most exclusive and widely acclaimed safari destinations in Africa, but one of the most remarkable wilderness areas on earth too. Boasting vast stretches of protected wilderness, pristine landscapes, premier National Parks, luxury safari lodges, incredible game reserves, and a glorious diversity of wildlife, as a safari destination, Botswana is hard to top.

The north and west of Botswana include the dazzling water worlds of the Okavango Delta and the Chobe River ecosystem whereas the south and east of Botswana consist of the jaw-dropping Kalahari Desert and lunar-like pans at Nxai and Makgadikgadi.

One of the largest salt pans in the world, Makgadikgadi was once a lake covering 10,000 square kilometers of north-eastern Botswana. While the cracked and dry Makgadikgadi Salt Pans may not look like the type of environment that would attract a large population of wildlife and / or birdlife, you’d be pleasantly surprised when visiting this unique part of Botswana. There is far more to the Makgadikgadi Pans than what meets the eye!

During its summer season, the desolate dry expanses of Makgadikgadi comes to life with thriving grasslands, attracting a vast diversity of wildlife, including springbok, wildebeest and zebra followed closely by lion and cheetah. Shallow waters begin to flood over seemingly endless pans, drawing thousands of flamingos.

By far one of the top highlights of visiting the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans during Botswanan’s wet season is seeing Southern Africa’s largest zebra migration from the Boteti River. During the annual zebra migration visitors will have the opportunity to witness thousands of zebras move through Botswana’s Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan National Parks. The annual zebra migration is the second largest migration of wildlife in Africa.

Besides being the largest salt flat in the world, the Makgadikgadi Pans is one of Botswana’s more remote locations and somewhat of a hidden gem that many are yet to discover. This makes it the perfect destination for this particular memorable and magical safari experience in Africa –  Enjoying a glorious night under the milky way and falling asleep with nothing but the beautiful starlit night sky and magical hue of the moonlight providing a slight shimmer of light.  It sounds like a dream doesn’t it? Only now you can make it a reality – How incredibly lucky are you?

With dedicated partners on the ground in the country of South Africa, a well-trained staff was headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with travel specialists in the U.S. and in Europe, and the new Adventures Africa was launched.

Enchanting scenery has long made South Africa a highly desirable journey. There are breathtaking mountain vistas from Table Mountain to God’s Window, stunning coastline views along the Garden Route at the very bottom of the continent, and horizon-to-horizon expanses of the African bush landscape.

Twice daily game drives can include wildlife as poignant as a glimpse of the endangered African wild dog to the already well known Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalo.)

It is a life experience that only Africa can offer. Adventures Africa works closely with respected partners who provide the highest level of services to create enjoyable and memorable life experiences. We believe a vacation is a success if it is custom tailored to the preferences and expectations of each individual traveling. Each trip will be designed to be just the right balance of comfort and excitement.

South Africa and its neighboring countries await. Connect with us today and let us start designing your specialized journey.

Kalmar Beyond Adventure's Porsche Safari

Kalmar will lead the adventure alongside a crew of mechanics, fixers, and other highly skilled helpers. Only 14 drivers will be allowed on the trip to create a real sense of comradery. Bonds and friendships are sure to strengthen as you workshop ways to extract a 911 from soft sand or get a Cayman across a raging river, for example.

The driving itself will be as diverse as the landscape. Some days will require precise steering, while others will demand breakneck speed. Similarly, you’ll spend some time traveling in a convoy and other times solo. Each driver has to pass a short qualification test to ensure they’re up to the task.

Kalmar says guests will catch Zs in “superb accommodation,” including some of Africa’s finest lodges and villas. You’ll also have ample opportunities to experience the local cultures, cuisines, sites, and wildlife. Highlights include Victoria Falls, the local markets, and the game reserves.

“Trans-Africa 2025 will be the adventure trip of a lifetime,” Kalmar said in a statement. “It allows guests to explore new frontiers, get close to wildlife, and under the skin of the real Africa—all through the windscreen of an iconic Porsche sports car.”

The Trans-Africa adventure starts from €66,900 (roughly $71,600) plus taxes. For more information, visit the Kalmar Beyond Adventure website .

Falls, Fauna, And Finer Things: An Epic Southern African Adventure

A frica! The very name should get you excited. If you’ve already decided on a trip to Africa, or maybe you are just starting to contemplate one, let me give you my suggestion for a truly epic southern African adventure. I know planning a trip here can be somewhat overwhelming — where to go, what to do, how much time to spend. Whether you’re an African “first-timer,” or perhaps you’ve been bitten by the Africa “bug” and are looking to return to explore the continent more, the journey I’d like to suggest covers three countries, some of the continent’s most iconic places, and brings you right up to some of the very best things southern Africa has to offer.

My husband and I recently traveled a route that I think checks all the boxes for the perfect African adventure. Starting in Zambia at the world-famous Victoria Falls, we then traveled the length of Zimbabwe via luxury train, stopping off at some special highlights along the way. We crossed into South Africa and finished our journey in the Greater Kruger Park — one of the biggest nature conservation areas in the world and one of the crown jewels of South African national parks. Read on for some inspiration…

Livingstone, Zambia

We started our journey in Livingstone, on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls.

Livingstone, named after the famous explorer David Livingstone, was founded in 1905 and became the country’s capital. In 1935, the capital was moved to Lusaka, but Livingstone has retained its “Tourist Capital” status. Roughly 6 miles from the Victoria Falls, Livingstone gives a real experience of authentic Zambian life.

The town is a typical African town with a busy charm. Clean, cheerful, and colorful, it’s a great place to get a feel for Zambian culture. The locals in Livingstone are busy going about their daily lives, and whilst friendly and welcoming, they pay little attention to tourists. As an added bonus, there are a lot fewer people trying to sell you stuff and generally part you from your money here than there are on the Zimbabwean side of the falls.

The Victoria Falls

When Scottish doctor, explorer, and missionary David Livingstone set sail for Africa in 1840, he was only 27 years old. By 1855, he’d spent years trekking across a continent that was then largely unknown to the rest of the world. As he traveled by boat down the Zambezi River, the local chief asked him if he’d seen the Mosi-oa-Tunya , meaning “The Smoke That Thunders.” The chief then escorted him down the river, right to the edge of the Victoria Falls.

Reaching the falls, Livingstone was so enchanted by what he saw that he wrote in his diary, “The whole scene was extremely beautiful… no one can imagine the beauty of the view… scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight… the most wonderful sight I had witnessed in Africa.”

Livingstone sent word of the falls to England and named them after Queen Victoria. Though he wrote those words in 1855, little has changed. What you’ll see if you visit now is the same amazing view that awed Livingstone and has made the Victoria Falls one of the most visited destinations in Africa.

Aside from visiting the Victoria Falls themselves, there are numerous activities to keep even the most adventurous traveler busy here: bungee jumping off or taking a guided tour of the famous Victoria Falls Bridge, white-water rafting on the Zambezi River downstream from the falls, taking a sunset cruise , visiting the white rhinos in the Mosi Oa Tunya National Park, or flying over the falls in a microlight or a helicopter .

Where To Stay

There are a myriad of places to stay when visiting the Victoria Falls, but my favorite is the stretch of the Zambezi River upstream from the Falls. Here, you are close enough to visit all the attractions, but it’s also a peaceful place to stay — away from the hustle and bustle of town.

Eighteen miles upstream of the Victoria Falls and Livingstone town is Mukwa River Lodge . Built to blend in with the natural surroundings, the rooms of this seven-suite, understated luxury boutique hotel open out over the river, giving the feeling of hovering over the water. Situated opposite the Zambezi National Park, you’ll likely see animals come down to the river to have a drink, all from the comfort of your private deck or plunge pool. Boat rides on the river, beautiful river views, luxurious décor, and fantastic food are the highlights of a stay here.

Crossing the border from Zambia to Zimbabwe, we headed to the railway station in the town of Victoria Falls.

At the station, we boarded what is known as the most luxurious train in Africa — indeed one of the most luxurious in the world — the Rovos Rail , “The Pride of Africa.”

When it comes to travel, speed and convenience are usually priorities. Often when we travel, especially by plane, we forget to actually enjoy the journey. Every once in a while, it’s important to slow down a little and travel at a more leisurely pace and in luxurious fashion. A trip on Rovos Rail gives you exactly that — fine food, fine wine, and fantastic accommodation. We were set to travel for 4 days and three nights all the way through Zimbabwe, from Victoria Falls to South Africa’s administrative capital, Pretoria, stopping at a couple of special spots along the way.

Hwange National Park

Heading south on the train, our first stop was Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest national park covering an impressive 5,657 square miles. The park was named after a local chief and was once the royal hunting ground for the king of the Ndebele tribe, before being designated a national park in 1929. Teeming with wildlife, Hwange is home to the world’s largest population of elephants (40,000) as well as a huge variety of other wildlife. The train stopped here and waited some hours, while the passengers spent the morning exploring the park on guided game drives and seeing elephants, giraffes, buffalo, sable antelope, lions, and more.

Matobo National Park

The following morning, the train stopped again for the passengers to alight. This time, we visited Matobo National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest parks in Zimbabwe, it is home to both black and white rhinos, as well as a fantastic collection of ancient rock art dating back at least 13,000 years. Matobo means “bald heads” and is an apt description of the dramatic hills and granite rocks in this area. The Matopos Hills also boasts some of the most dramatic scenery in Zimbabwe, with giant balancing rock formations on a huge granite plateau. It is here — on the peak of the Malindidzimu (“Hill of Spirits”) — that we visited the gravestone of Cecil John Rhodes. A British mining magnate, politician, and founder of diamond company De Beers, he was the original driving force behind the building of the Victoria Falls Bridge.

Johannesburg

Johannesburg, or the “City of Gold” as it’s sometimes referred to, is a massive city — the largest in South Africa and the country’s financial capital. Usually just a stopover for international tourists, Johannesburg is also a popular jumping-off point for a safari, which was exactly what we had planned.

Located in the upscale neighborhood of Houghton, The Residence is a really special boutique hotel. It has three swimming pools (one heated), a tennis court, a gym and spa (which offers great massages amongst other treatments), a sauna and steam room, and fireplaces throughout. The rooms are beautifully decorated with crystal chandeliers, antique furnishings, and Persian rugs. For golf enthusiasts, the hotel is positioned within walking distance of two of the most prestigious Johannesburg golf courses. OR Tambo International Airport is only 30 minutes away; an airport shuttle is available, as are terrific private Johannesburg city tours with the hotel’s in-house accredited tour guide.

Kruger National Park

Departing Johannesburg, we headed off to the final stop on our epic southern African journey: Kruger National Park.

At 7,523 square miles, Kruger National Park is the sixth largest national park in Africa, the first national park established in the country, and the country’s largest and best-known safari destination. All of Africa’s iconic safari species can be found here. The park is home to over 12,000 elephants, 27,000 buffalo, 2,000 leopards, 2,800 lions, and around 2,500 rhinos, as well as cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, and zebras.

Along the boundaries of Kruger National Park are a cluster of private game reserves. The fences between these reserves and the national park have been removed, meaning wildlife can roam between the park and the reserves freely. These private reserves offer a more exclusive safari experience than staying within the national park. There are several private game reserves in the Greater Kruger area; we chose Thornybush Game Reserve for our visit. Thornybush is 29,000 acres and home to such an abundance of wildlife that you’re almost guaranteed to spot the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) on your visit. It’s the perfect safari destination for experts and novices alike.

Fantastic wildlife sightings are right on your doorstep at Malewane Lodge at Royal Malewane and the guides are some of the most qualified, passionate, and experienced in Africa. With gorgeous rooms, personalized service, gourmet food, and a great year-round climate, Royal Malawane is an ideal safari destination. It’s also one of the best places to experience the wild heart of the African bush in comfort, style, and seclusion; everything you need for a truly memorable safari.

Kruger was the final stop on our epic southern Africa journey before we headed home. As we reached the end of our itinerary, we truly felt we’d experienced some of the very best this part of the continent had to offer. I hope I’ve inspired you to follow in our footsteps!

What people love about Walking Adventure Tours in Africa

We had the TIME OF OUR LIVES on our private guided tour through Tanzania. Our guide Jackson went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. He operated as both a driver, a translator, and a nature guide throughout the trip. Each morning we'd wake up around 6:30a, have a delicious breakfast at the various bush camps, then spend the entire day from 8am until 5pm seeing the sights and searching for wildlife. Jack was excellent at spotting animals, which can be very difficult to do in high grass. We saw loads of elephant (on average,30-40 per day), lions devouring a warthog carcass, mating, grooming and sleeping. We saw leopards doing all of those things too! Plenty of waterbuffalo and giraffes; honestly, you name it, we saw it, UP CLOSE! Each night we would head back to the camps which were all very well designed and clean. It's a bit unnerving planning a trip all the way to Tanzania, from your home computer here in the States (los angeles to be exact), but once we arrived and were in the hands of the Almighty Kilimanjaro staff, all of our troubles melted away. I cannot think of a single negative thing to say about this very well-run company. The booking process was very clear and they remained available for contact all the way up through our arrival. And again, our guide was such a wonderful person to spend time with. Very understanding personality, very funny, and kept my husband and I entertained the entire time. There are so many tour providers for Serengeti, Tarangire, Ndutu and Ngorongoro regions, but this one was by far the best. And VERY AFFORDABLE compared to others. Highly recommend.

Pretoria & Johannesburg in 2 Days: A South African Adventure

Author's Profile Picture

April 17, 2024 · 2 min read

Pretoria Johannesburg 2 Days Itinerary
