Miley Cyrus Didn't Make a Single Dollar From the Bangerz Tour

"The Bangerz Tour was an investment in myself."

With everyone buzzing about huge artists and their even bigger summer tours breaking records (we're looking at you, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé),  Miley Cyrus  is opening up about her own experience on the road — and how it's a little different from what's going on today. She explained that back in 2014, when she was out supporting her  Bangerz  album, her tour didn't turn a profit because of its outlandish production and huge sets and props — and Cyrus is totally fine with that. She broke it all down as part of her "Used to Be Young" video series, which has seen her reflect on huge moments in her career, like the end of  Hannah Montana  and her  Vanity Fair  cover.

"The Bangerz Tour was an investment in myself," she said in a TikTok video  posted on Sept. 4 . "A lot of these ideas were so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces. And so I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face on my tongue."

"I didn't make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent," she added.

"I said, 'There's no one I would rather invest in than myself.' So, I paid for it all, to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved," she explained to anyone wondering why she'd embark on such an over-the-top tour if it wasn't going to make her any money.

She also explained the end of the show, which saw her fly into the sky in a finale reminiscent of Jim Carrey's  The Truman Show . It was a meta nod to her life under the microscope of fame and she hoped that the not-so-subtle homage was something that would resonate with fans.

"She goes, 'How would you want to end this concert? The show is so big, how do you end it?'" Miley said of working with creative director Diane Martel. "And I wanted to end it in a  Truman Show  reference, so I flew out on a giant hot dog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign the way that Jim Carrey does, because I felt like  The Truman Show  was really a reflection of my life."

Why Miley Cyrus Says She Didn’t Make Any Money From Her Bangerz Tour

As part of her ongoing "used to be young" video series, miley cyrus revealed the reason her controversial 2014 bangerz tour didn't earn the singer a profit..

Every single night and every single day, she was gonna do her thang.

Miley Cyrus  recently revealed the real reason she didn't make any money off her eccentric, costume-filled 2014 Bangerz Tour —and why she is fully okay with that.

"The Bangerz Tour was an investment in myself," the 30-year-old explained in her ongoing "Used To Be Young"  TikTok series on Sept. 4 . "A lot of these ideas were so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces. And so I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face on my tongue."

And indeed, the tour, which was for Miley's fourth studio album of the same name, featured dancers in animal costumes , cars on stage and the singer making her grand entrance down a slide shaped like a tongue coming out of a huge picture of her face.

"I didn't make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent," the  Hannah Montana  alum continued. As for her response to those who questioned her motives for orchestrating such an extravagant, lengthy tour that wouldn't turn much of a profit, she simply noted, "I said, 'There's no one I would rather invest in than myself.' So I paid for it all, to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved."

The tour was the result of her partnership with creative director  Diane Martel , Miley shared, revealing that it was Diane who prompted the "Wrecking Ball" singer to consider how she wanted to exit the stage each night.

"She goes, 'How would you want to end this concert? The show is so big, how do you end it?'" Miley continued. "And I wanted to end it in a  Truman Show  reference, so I flew out on a giant hot dog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign the way that  Jim Carrey  does because I felt like  The Truman Show  was really a reflection of my life."

Miley Cyrus Says She 'Didn't Make a Dime' on the Bangerz Tour: It Was an 'Investment in Myself'

"I paid for it all to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved," the superstar said of the 2014 concert

Miley Cyrus admitted just how much she decided to say, “I'ma do my thang,” during her Bangerz era .

In the latest installment of the pop star’s Used to Be Young TikTok series in which she reflects on her life and career in the spotlight, the singer, 30, opened up about how she fully funded her Bangerz Tour because no one else trusted her vision.

“The Bangerz Tour was an investment in myself,” the “Flowers” artist said of the 2014 tour in support of her hit, fourth studio album. “I didn’t make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent.”

She said in the TikTok, “When everyone kept saying, ‘Why are you doing this? You’re going to do like 100 shows and not going to make any money.’ I said, ‘There’s no one I would rather invest in than myself.’ So I paid for it all to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved.”

The “Midnight Sky” singer explained that few people on her team at the time understood her ideas for the show, which was famously extremely campy and included a surreal, larger-than-life. She shared, “A lot of these ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces, so I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face on my tongue.”

Cyrus also opened up about the significance behind one of the concepts of the concert that she and her creative director at the time, Diane Martel, came up with. “[Martel] goes, ‘How would you want to end this concert?’ Like, ‘The show is so big, how do you want to end it?’ and I wanted to end it in a Truman Show reference,” the performer shared, referring to the 1998 movie starring Jim Carrey as a man whose life is broadcast as a TV show without him knowing.

She continued, “So I flew out on a giant hot dog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign, the way Jim Carrey does, because I felt like The Truman Show was really a reflection of my life.”

Cyrus announced the Used To Be Young series in August along with her latest single of the same name , which is an emotional ballad of her reflecting on her past and how she’s been perceived throughout her career.

The hitmaker previously got candid on the TikTok show about other moments surrounding the release of her 2013 album Bangerz that caused controversy, including her single “ We Can’t Stop ” and the “Wrecking Ball” music video.

Tim Mosenfelder/Getty

“At the time when I made ‘Wrecking Ball,’ I was expecting for there to be controversy and backlash, but I don’t think I expected other women to put me down or turn on me, especially women that had been in my position before," the superstar said, going on to mention criticism she received from the late Irish artist Sinead O’Connor . “I had no idea about the fragile mental state that she was in. And I was also only 20 years old. So I could really only wrap my head around mental illness so much.”

Cyrus has also gotten candid on the series about even earlier moments in her career, as well as her relationships .

Last week, the former Disney Channel star spoke about her 2009 Teen Choice Awards performance in which she sang “Party in the U.S.A.” on top of an ice cream cart while holding onto a pole.

“I had cut ‘Party in the U.S.A.’ and I was doing my first performance for the Teen Choice Awards. My mom was like, ‘I think it’d be really cool if she was in the trailer park, that's where we really do come from,’” the recording artist reflected.

In response to the controversy that was sparked by the then-17-year-old holding onto a pole during the performance, Cyrus said, “It wasn't a stripper pole, it was actually just for stability. I had a heel on! Like what did you want from me?”

Miley Cyrus says she 'didn't make a dime' off her 'Bangerz Tour'

Financially speaking, Miley Cyrus said her 2014 "Bangerz" tour wasn't a success — but she said it shaped her into the artist she is now.

"The 'Bangerz' tour was an investment in myself," she said in part 30 of her "Used to Be Young" series, released on Sept. 3.

The tour had elaborate set pieces, including a giant face with a tongue that Cyrus rode down as a slide , massive puppets and oversized beds. The "Hannah Montana" star said bringing the vision to the 2014 tour ended up costing her money.

"A lot of these ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces," she said.

She did it, she said, because she wanted to give fans the quality they expected.

"I didn't make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent," she said. "Everyone kept saying, 'Why are you doing this? You're going to do like 100 shows and you're not going to make any money.'"

She said she thwarted their version of success.

"I said there's no one I would rather invest in than myself," she recalled of her response to them. "So, I paid for it all to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved."

The tour of 80 concerts made $70 million in ticket sales, Forbes reported.

The "Flowers" singer has dropped some bombshells throughout her "Used To Be Young" video series. She explained why she stands behind her controversial Vanity Fair cover from 2008 in a TikTok posted on Aug. 25, taken when she was 15 years old. She said the goal was to distinguish herself from her "Hannah Montana" character.

"This image of me is the complete opposite of the bubblegum pop star that I had been known for being, and that’s what was so upsetting,” she said.

Miley Cyrus Made The ‘Bangerz Tour’ So ‘Outlandish’ That She Had To ‘Pay For It All’ Herself

Lexi Lane

It’s been ten years since Miley Cyrus made headlines for her wild Bangerz era. However, as part of her continuing TikTok series in support of her “ Used To Be Young ” single, Cyrus has shared some of the backstory behind the moments.

In a recent upload, she discussed how extravagant she wanted The Bangerz Tour to be, but how she struggled to financially pull it off.

“ The Bangerz Tour was an investment in myself,” Cyrus explained. “A lot of these ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces… So I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face on my tongue.”

Working with the creative director Diane Martel, Cyrus pulled inspiration from movies like The Truman Show to lean into the dreamlike energy. She ended the show in a similar way to how the film ends. And she paid for it all out of pocket, as people thought she wouldn’t make any money from doing that for countless shows.

“I said there’s no one I would rather invest in than myself,” she added. “So I paid for it all to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved.”

Miley Cyrus last embarked on an extensive world tour in 2014 with her ‘Bangerz’ extravaganza.

The US pop star, now 30, created a campy concert that was praised by critics as “weird and wonderful”, packaged with a healthy dose of twerking, outlandish costumes and over-the-top sets, including a giant tongue slide which formed as Cyrus’ grand entrance.

After completing legs in North and South America, Europe and Australia, the Bangerz tour grossed a whopping $US62.9 million ($A116 million, adjusted for inflation).

Now, as part of her ongoing TikTok series ‘Used to be Young’ – in which Cyrus divulges on moments that shaped her career – the former Disney Channel star claimed she “didn’t receive a dime” of that profit.

“It was an investment in myself. A lot of these ideas were so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces,” Cyrus said.

It was to be the star’s last large-scale world tour to date, and it comes as Cyrus recently declared she no longer has a desire to hit the road with her music, telling fans her latest album Endless Summer Vacation – her eighth studio album – would not get an accompanying tour.

Miley Cyrus Says She Funded ‘Bangerz’ Tour Herself and ‘Didn’t Make a Dime’: ‘No One Really Wanted to Support Me’

The “We Can’t Stop” singer remembers spending her own money to cover the 2014 concerts’ “outlandish” set pieces

Miley Cyrus performs at Praca da Apoteose on Sept. 28, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Miley Cyrus had an interesting year in 2013. That was the year when the former Disney Channel star twerked on Robin Thicke and got naked in her “Wrecking Ball” music video. Cyrus released her record “Bangerz” the following year and soon embarked on a 78-date tour by the same name that made nearly $63 million — though to hear her tell it today, the singer never made “a dime” from the touring experience.

Over the last few weeks, Cyrus has opened up to fans through a series of TikTok videos she’s titled “Used to be Young” in honor of her new song by the same name. In Sunday’s episode, Cyrus revealed that despite the overwhelming success of the “Bangerz” tour (it was the 16th highest-grossing tour of the year), she didn’t make anything because she “paid for it all” herself.

The tour was reflective of that period in Cyrus’ life and music, though she admitted that others thought her ideas were so “outlandish” that she didn’t get a lot of encouragement. As she said , “The ‘Bangerz’ tour was an investment in myself.”

“A lot of the ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces,” she continued. “I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face, on my tongue.”

Cyrus added, “I wanted to end it with a ‘Truman Show’ reference. So I flew out on a giant hotdog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign like Jim Carrey does. Because I felt like ‘The Truman Show’ was really a reflection of my life.”

Miley Cyrus

The singer then addressed the financial aspect of the tour, which was enormous. And apparently, because so few people backed her plans, she forged ahead alone. She explained, “I didn’t make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent. And when everyone kept saying: ‘Why are you doing this? You’re going to do, like, 100 shows and you’re not going to make any money?’”

“I said: ‘There’s no one I would rather invest in than myself.’ So I paid for it all to make it exactly what I thought I, and the fans, deserve,” Cyrus concluded.

It’s worth remembering that Cyrus was 20 and 21 years old at the time, and was slammed by adults far older than her for exploring life outside of the confines of the “Hannah Montana” character that had defined much of her teen years. While she might have made some choices then that she wouldn’t make now, the body shaming and criticism that Cyrus was hit with wasn’t exactly an appropriate reaction to what she was doing.

Earlier this year, Cyrus admitted to British Vogue that she carried a lot of “guilt and shame for years” as a result. She added, “I was creating attention for myself because I was dividing myself from a character I had played. Anyone, when you’re 20 or 21, you have more to prove. ‘I’m not my parents.’ ‘I am who I am.’”

Cyrus also described herself as a child at the time, and continued, “Now that I’m an adult, I realize how harshly I was judged. I was harshly judged as a child by adults and now, as an adult, I realize that I would never harshly judge a child.”

Miley Cyrus has revealed that she didn't make any money when she went on tour in support of her album Bangerz in 2014.

There's no denying that Bangerz is one of Miley Cyrus' most iconic eras. Not only did Miley top the Billboard Hot 100 twice with 'We Can't Stop' and 'Wrecking Ball', but she also broke the internet with her controversial MTV VMAs performance. Throughout the entire era, Miley was on everyone's lips and the Bangerz Tour reflected just how massive she was.

However, in spite of Bangerz being so successful, Miley has now explained that the tour cost more to put on that it made.

Miley Cyrus Opens Up About Not Making a Profit from Bangerz Tour

by Jon Mendelsohn September 5, 2023, 10:54 am

In a new segment of her Used To Be Young TikTok series, Miley Cyrus revealed that she barely made any profits from her 2014 Bangerz tour. Cyrus claims that after investing a lot of her own personal finances into the tour, she did not earn much money back.

Videos by American Songwriter

“The Bangerz Tour was an investment in myself. A lot of these ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces, so I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face on my tongue,” Cyrus explained in Part 30 of her TikTok series. “I didn’t make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent.

“When everyone kept saying, ‘Why are you doing this? You’re going to do, like, 100 shows and not going to make any money,’ I said, ‘There’s no one I would rather invest in than myself,’ Cyrus added. “So I paid for it all to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved.”

Later in the segment, Cyrus discussed how she and her one-time creative director Diane Martel developed the unique details showcased during the Bangerz tour. “[Martel] goes, ‘How would you want to end this concert?’ Like, ‘The show is so big, how do you want to end it?’ and I wanted to end it in a  Truman Show  reference,” Cyrus said. “So I flew out on a giant hot dog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign, the way Jim Carrey does, because I felt like  The Truman Show  was really a reflection of my life.”

In an earlier segment of Used to Be Young , which is named after Cyrus’ latest single, the “We Can’t Stop” singer detailed an experience she had when she sang opposite Beyoncé and Rihanna while she was still a teenager. “What I remember most from doing this performance is I was standing in between two of the big legends and icons that I was looking up to at the time, and they treated me like a little sister the entire time. They were being really sweet,” Cyrus revealed. “I got brackets on the back of my teeth, and I’m singing with Beyoncé.”

Miley Cyrus has revealed that she “didn’t make a dime” from her 2014 ‘ Bangerz Tour ‘ thanks to going big on stage props and more.

The singer-songwriter spent her own money on the “outlandish” tour, which saw her arrive on the stage each night by sliding down a giant replica of her tongue that was poking out of the side of a mouth.

Although the tour ended up grossing $62.9million (£49million) the star didn’t make any profit from it herself.

The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column reported that Cyrus said: “It was an investment in myself. A lot of these ideas were so outlandish that no one wanted to support me in making these items.

“I had big puppets, oversized beds, I arrived on stage by sliding down [a giant model of] my own tongue.

“I didn’t make a dime on this tour because I wanted it to be excellent, and when everyone kept saying ‘Why are you doing this? You are going to do, like, a hundred shows and you are not going to make any money?’

“I said there is no one I would rather invest in than myself. I paid for it all to make it exactly what I and the fans deserved.”

Cyrus’ comments come after she said last week that touring “isn’t healthy” for her .

Speaking in a ‘Used To Be Young’ interview series for TikTok on August 27, and following the release of her new song of the same name , the pop star opened up about the various reasons she finds that aspect of being a music artist so challenging.

It was confirmed in May that Cyrus would be taking a hiatus from touring , sharing that “singing for hundreds of thousands of people isn’t really the thing that I love”.

The mixed response from fans prompted her to clear up the misinterpretation on social media, writing: “For clarity I feel connected to my fans NOW more than ever.”

Elaborating further in the new interview clip, Cyrus shared that “what people don’t really understand about touring” is that “the show is only 90 minutes, but that’s your life”.

She continued: “If you’re performing at a certain level of intensity and excellence, there should be an equal amount of recovery and rest.

“There’s a level of ego that has to play a part, that I feel gets overused when I’m on tour and once that switches on, it’s hard to turn it off. And I think when you’re training your ego every single night to be active, that’s the hardest switch for me to turn off.”

Cyrus went on that “having every day, the relationship between you and other humans being ‘subject’ and ‘observer’, isn’t healthy for me”.

The singer continued: “Because it erases my humanity and my connection. And without my humanity and my connection, I can’t be a songwriter, which is my priority.”

Miley Cyrus Says She "Didn't Make a Dime" Off Her $62 Million "Bangerz" Tour

M iley Cyrus poured her heart, soul, and apparently, her performance salary into her 2014 "Bangerz" tour. "Bangerz," her fourth studio album, notably re-established Cyrus's musical career following her departure from Disney Channel. A mix of hip-hop, pop, and R&B, the album turned the public's vision of Cyrus as an artist on its head. The accompanying tour further solidified her artistic transformation.

Between wiggling her tongue in front of thousands and belting out bawdy lyrics coupled with highly suggestive dance moves, Cyrus reinvented herself. In a Sept. 3 TikTok video promoting her emotional new single, "Used to Be Young," Cyrus reflected on her "Bangerz" era and said that she paid for a majority of the tour's over-the-top props with her own money. "I didn't make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent," she said in the TikTok video.

"I didn't make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent."

As her first post-Disney production, Cyrus saw the "Bangerz" tour as an opportunity to separate herself from her forced pop persona and showcase her true, wild, fun-loving spirit on stage. To do this, she knew she would need to go all out with her outfits, her energy, and the stage design. Unfortunately, many of her stage ideas proved too extravagant for producers, who she claims refused to fund the majority of props that have since come to symbolize the tour.

"The 'Bangerz' Tour was an investment in myself," she said. "A lot of these ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces." When no one was willing to fund her out-of-the-box ideas, Cyrus took matters into her own hands. She said she used her performance salary to back everything from a giant, flying hotdog to an oversized cutout of her own face complete with a functional tongue slide.

"I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face on my tongue," she recalled. "This was me and [video director and choreographer] Diane Martel - this was our full vision, once again. She goes like, 'How would you want to end this concert? The show is so big. How do you end it?' And I wanted to end it in a 'Truman Show' reference, so I flew out on a giant hotdog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign the way that Jim Carrey does because I felt like 'The Truman Show' was really a reflection of my life."

The 80-concert show reportedly made somewhere between $62 million, according to a 2014 Pollstar report , and $70 million in ticket sales, according to Forbes . For many, the fact that Cyrus would reallocate a sizable amount of her profit from the production may seem like a questionable decision, especially at such a tender point in her musical career. Looking back, though, Cyrus sees the decision as an important investment that has since paid off tenfold.

"When everyone kept saying, 'Why are you doing this? You're going to do like 100 shows and you're not going to make any money,' I said, 'There's no one I would rather invest in than myself,'" she said. "So I paid for it all to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved."
