Copeland are an indie band hailing from Lakeland, Florida, United States who formed in 2001. After their debut in 2003 they released four studio albums before splitting up in 2010, in 2014 the band reformed to tour and release a new studio album, “Ixora”.

Copeland began with the partnership of lead singer, songwriter, pianist and guitarist Aaron Marsh with his childhood friend, bass player and backing singer James Likeness. While Marsh and Likeness were stuck in Lakeland, Florida, not a city known for its music scene to say the very least, Marsh did manage to attend the one high school in the area that one would most likely form a band in, Through the connections that he made at his home city’s Harrison Arts Centre, a performing arts high school, he formed the first incarnation of Copeland in 2001, with himself, Likeness, Bryan Laurenson on the guitar, and Jonathan Bucklew, on the drums.

They started performing together anywhere that would have them and by 2002 the band had signed a record contract with The Melitia Group. Largely inspired by the death of Aaron Marsh’s grandmother and the hospitalisation of his girlfriend, their debut album “Beneath Medicine Tree”, was released a year later. The band took to the road and, wisely enough, didn’t leave it until 2005 when they went into the studio to record their next album. In between they toured like men possessed, taking their live show anywhere that people wanted it to be while avoiding overexposure like the plague.

2005 saw the release of their second album “In Motion”, however shortly after its release, Marsh started developing a passion for producing the work of other bands, working with the likes of Underoath and Anberlin to name but a few. While the band were getting higher and higher in profile, with their 2008 album “You Are My Sunshine” managing to break the Billboard 200’s Top 50, James Likeness had left in 2007 and the writing had been on the wall ever since then. After a farewell tour , the band called it quits in 2010. However, signs of life started to show in the Copeland camp in 2014, after four years of inactivity.

On the first of April, Marsh announced that the band were finally getting back together, and that a new record they’d made practically in secret “Ixora”, would be released in October. They went back on the road shortly before the records release and the reception of the shows has been better than ever. They’re a band that any fan of rock and roll should be proud to have back in the fold, and they ccome highly recommended.

Live reviews

Copeland supply a brand of anthemic pop-punk loaded with honest emotion and sincerity to which gentle, meaningful head-nodding lends itself. Whilst clearly influenced by their religious background in their lyrical sentiments, Aaron Marsh, the frontman of the group, avoids the 'christian band' tag, eager to state this is not their agenda. In 2008, the band parted ways but in April 2014, they announced the group were to make a fifth studio album, called Ixora, with an expected release date of October. Their music sounds similar to groups such as Mae, Hopesfall and Switchfoot, with Copeland being label mates on occasion with Mae, both being signed to Tooth and Nail Records.

Their live performance, sometimes acoustic, sometimes electrified, is always gentle and moving, incorporating harmonies with vocals that often use the falsetto. Their ethereal tones seem to reverberate around the audience with the use of a full guitar sound, sometimes incorporating keys into the mix to add further depth. It is the kind of music you would want to listen to if feeling down, yet the music is not depressing, instead uplifting and motivating with an energy of optimism that will certainly aid with any hardship. It is gentle music for gentle souls but with their emotive delivery it will engage most audiences.

Aaron Marsh and co seem to have a revived energy since the reunion of Copeland in 2014. It seemed as though all the members needed to time away to gain personal clarity and experiment with other pathways before regrouping to create 'Ixora' which many claim to be their strongest album to date.

There is definitely an anthemic energy to the tracks from this LP when performed live and the audience are really responsive to the material, particularly a rambunctious rendition of 'Erase'. They do not dismiss their past at any point during the gig and they understand material from the likes of 'You Are My Sunshine' and 'Eat, Sleep, Repeat' is always popular with the masses. They cheer in joint force during the introduction of 'I'm A Sucker For A Kind Word'. A finale of 'Love Affair' allows Aaron to really demonstrate his skill with the electric guitar and the audience claps along intently as he performs extended instrumentals, reimagining the track in a way completely unique to the live experience. It was very clear from the sound of deafening cheers, absence really does make the heart grow fonder.

Great show from start to finish.

Entry to the venue was quick and easy. Decent amount of merch available. Was trying to pickup Ixora and Twin for a friend but could only get Twin but nbd.

Many Rooms:

Laid back low key opener with poignant heartfelt songs over dreamy and loopy guitars.

From Indian Lakes:

I wasn’t too familiar with their stuff but new they were pretty well known going in. They blew me away. Excellent excellent show. Kinda dream poppy/psychedelic rock. Lead guy was pretty baked but these guys were tight and did a great set.

Great show. Great set with a healthy mix of the new album as well as E, S, R and YAMS. Again they were tight and they rock harder live than on the recorded stuff. Chin Up was a highlight and they finished off with You Have My Attention which was a great way to end it.

Such a freakinng amazing show, they killed it. I felt bad because it seemed like not many people were vibing to their music from where I was standing but I hope they know they had super fans in the audience. I've been waiting to see them for years and I was not disappointed in the slightest. And I got to meet Aaron Marsh so that was awesome. Such a beautiful venue and awesome time.

Following an extensive remodel at Copeland Park & Events Center that began in 2016, it became possible for the facilities to be used for way more than just baseball. In the spring of 2017, the facility played host to the inaugural Summer Kickoff Concert, welcoming in Jerrod Neimann and Love & Theft, and began to show thousands of concert-goers that the facility was more than just a baseball park.

In the following years, Copeland Park & Events Center continued to host major concerts such as Lee Brice, Eli Young Band, Billy Currington, Jimmie Allen and Brett Young thus quickly becoming La Crosse’s premier outdoor music destination.

In the fall of 2022, the venue had its biggest show to date when rock legends Stone Temple Pilots rocked the facility! That show helped change the landscape for the 2023 summer with the addition of our “Altra Rocks Summer Concert Series” which will feature three different rock themed shows at Copeland Park & Events Center!

In addition to the concerts, the facility has played host to multiple craft beer tastings, movie nights, dueling piano shows, and has recently become the host for events such as the Oktoberfest Parade Marshals Dinner, the State Bank Chili Cook Off, and the Torchlight Parade After Glow Party.

As the saying goes…”There is just no place like Copeland”. See you at an event in the near future!

Stewart Copeland - Have I Said Too Much, The Police, Hollywood, And Other Adventures

The Police drummer Stewart Copeland is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and is heading out on his first spoken word tour, to speak about The Police, Hollywood, and other adventures. Have I Said Too Much will visit UK Theatres in Autumn 2024

Tour Runs: 25 October - 9 November 2024

Stewart Copeland is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. He drove the all-conquering success of The Police during the 1970s and 1980s, before being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A multi-Grammy winner, who followed his work with The Police by composing music for soundtracks for Hollywood movies and operas, Stewart is hitting the road for his most intimate tour to date.

During a 13-date tour of England and Wales, Stewart will share his life as a performer, musician, entertainer, and writer.

His tour, entitled Have I Said Too Much? – The Police, Hollywood, and other Adventures, will start on October 25 and conclude on November 9.

Having played drums for Curved Air from 1975 to 1976, Stewart was the founding member of The Police recruiting lead singer Sting and guitarist Andy Summers. His remarkable talent helped drive The Police to world domination between 1977 and 1986, and then again from 2007 to 2008 when the band reunited.

His Hollywood soundtracks include Francis Ford Coppola’s Rumblefish and Oliver Stone's Wall Street and Talk Radio. He wrote books, formed supergroups, made films, and composed music for ballet, opera, and classical concerts.

Stewart says: “As the drummer with The Police I have played some of the biggest stadiums in the world. This tour, however, will see me visit much more intimate venues. It will be a real privilege to share the stories of my life with fans in these great settings.”

An Evening With Stewart Copeland will provide a fascinating insight into his incredible life as a performer, musician, entertainer, and writer.

Misty Copeland Recalls Working with 'Down to Earth' Taylor Swift: 'Incredible'

Copeland joined Swift onstage during her career-spanning performance at the 2019 American Music Awards

Misty Coopeland/instagram

Working with Taylor Swift is an experience Misty Copeland will never forget.

Joining Swift onstage during her career-spanning performance at the 2019 American Music Awards is something that Copeland recalled as being "incredible" during an appearance on this week's Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?

"You know, I have to say that Taylor Swift was one of the most humble, down to earth [individuals]," Copeland told host Chris Wallace. "You know she spent hours and hours just hanging out with me and my dance partner, Craig Hall, before the performances and was just so invested."

Copeland and Hall performances as Swift closed out her award show performance, which celebrated her artist of the decade honor , with the track "Lover."

MTV/Youtube

The ballet dancer, who has also worked with Prince , said that she often strives to branch out to perform on different stages.

"I think it's really important for ballet to be seen by a wide range of people. And I think that it should be for everyone," she said.

Like Swift, Copeland has been a trailblazer in her profession after becoming the first African American woman to be a principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre in 2015.

She spoke with PEOPLE about the accomplishment in May 2016, describing it as something that gave her an "added boost of power."

"[Now], I have this other mission that is so much bigger than me and my dancing career. It's shaped me as a woman and a ballerina. It's allowed me to be this voice and vessel for generations and generation to come, and those that came before me that didn't have the opportunity to share their voice or their art," Copeland told PEOPLE.

Alice Coltrane’s Explosive Carnegie Hall Concert, and 7 More New Songs

Hear tracks by St. Vincent, Ani DiFranco, Camila Cabello and others.

A black-and-white photo of a woman playing a harp, her lips pursed in concentration.

By Jon Pareles and Lindsay Zoladz

Every Friday, pop critics for The New York Times weigh in on the week’s most notable new tracks. Listen to the Playlist on Spotify here (or find our profile: nytimes) and at Apple Music here , and sign up for The Amplifier , a twice-weekly guide to new and old songs.

Alice Coltrane, ‘ Journey in Satchidananda ’

Alice Coltrane’s concert at Carnegie Hall, recorded in 1971 but only released in full this month, gathered force like a typhoon, and is well worth experiencing as a whole. Its serene opening was “Journey in Satchidananda,” a modal meditation with the flute and saxophones of Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp enfolded in her cascading harp arpeggios. Later in the concert, she switched to piano and led her group — which also included two drummers and two bassists — in a squall of free jazz that “Journey in Satchidananda” doesn’t begin to foreshadow. JON PARELES

Ani DiFranco, ‘ The Thing at Hand ’

Ani DiFranco ’s next album, due in May, was produced by BJ Burton, who has come up with studio abstractions for Bon Iver and Low. Two songs released in advance, “The Thing at Hand” and “New Bible,” are starkly unadorned musical close-ups. In “The Thing at Hand,” DiFranco embraces living completely in the moment, beyond identity or premeditation. The melody is bluesy; the minimal accompaniment is from frayed-edged keyboards, distant bell tones and near the end, when DiFranco insists, “I defy being defined,” just a raw, barely tuned guitar, proclaiming a bare-bones intimacy. PARELES

St. Vincent, ‘ Flea ’

In “Flea,” St. Vincent — Annie Clark — wrings everything from her insect simile. “When you start to itch and scratch and scream/Once I’m in you can’t get rid of me.” With her guitar abetted by Dave Grohl on drums and Justin Meldal-Johnsen on bass, she revels in a parasite’s point of view — “All I see is meat” — as she bears down on a fuzzed-out stoner-rock riff and allows a few psychedelic tangents, without ever relinquishing her prey. PARELES

Camila Cabello featuring Playboi Carti, ‘ I Luv It ’

Camila Cabello embraces the surreal, compressed aesthetic of hyperpop on “I Luv It.” She sings with breathy eagerness about the delusional, hormonal, reality-defying aspects of early infatuation; sometimes her phrases are digitally chopped up and looped. She’s backed by a hurrying electronic pulse and a stop-start syncopated thump. Near the end of a brief track, her mating call is answered by a semi-intelligible rap from the professionally blurry Playboi Carti. PARELES

Jordan Hamilton, ‘ Roses ’

Disorientation suffuses “Roses” by the singer, cellist and producer Jordan Hamilton. “I done been through the whole damn town trying to keep up with my thoughts/Still I’m running,” he sings with bemused nonchalance. The song sets up staggered, minimalistic layers of cellos, keyboards, percussion and vocals, and it ends with him still suspended in his self-constructed limbo. PARELES

Vampire Weekend, ‘ Mary Boone ’

Less verbose bands may be content to pair “moon” with “June,” but on the latest single from “Only God Was Above Us,” Ezra Koenig offers a quintessentially Vampire Weekend take on a familiar rhyme scheme, pairing a semi-obscure cultural reference with crooned romanticism. “Mary Boone, Mary Boone, I hope you feel like loving someone soon,” he sings, name-checking a once-powerful art dealer who recently served a prison sentence for tax fraud. The song itself is a kind of musical mosaic, combining floating atmospherics that recall the band’s “Modern Vampires of the City” with breakbeats and a lush, heavenly choir. Boone, for her part, has reacted to the song with confusion (“Why did they do that? Does this mean I’m a vampire?”) that eventually gave way to shrugging acceptance: “Why not?” LINDSAY ZOLADZ

Grateful Dead, ‘ Wave That Flag ’

Which comes first, the lyrics or the music? For the Grateful Dead’s “U.S. Blues,” which opened the band’s 1974 album “From the Mars Hotel,” the answer to that old songwriter query was clearly the music. An expanded 50th-anniversary reissue of the album will include this demo version of “Wave That Flag.” It’s Jerry Garcia alone — multitracked on lead and rhythm guitars, vocal and maracas — yet he simulates the Dead’s improvisational give-and-take. “Wave That Flag” has the recognizable tune and the chorus of “U.S. Blues,” but only a handful of the verse lyrics. The rest are rhyming three-word phrases: “Ride the train, count your change/Sit up straight, bewail your fate.” By the time the song turned into “U.S. Blues,” clearly Garcia and the lyricist Robert Hunter had started thinking harder about the political implications of the three words, “Wave that flag.” PARELES

Marina Allen, ‘ Red Cloud ’

In “Red Cloud,” Marina Allen imagines a primordial, free-associative Nebraska, the state where her grandparents lived. “I am warped, I am wrapped, as I warble my song/As I wobble my gait to the edge of the Great Plain in Red Cloud,” she sings over two chords that sway like a porch swing, at times topped by twin violins. Her voice sounds just barely awake, equally ready for hardship and wonderment. PARELES

Jon Pareles has been The Times’s chief pop music critic since 1988. He studied music, played in rock, jazz and classical groups and was a college-radio disc jockey. He was previously an editor at Rolling Stone and the Village Voice. More about Jon Pareles
