7 Gorgeous Gulf Coast Beaches From Texas to Florida

Here are the best beaches on the Gulf of Mexico for your next relaxing getaway.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

There are five states lucky enough to have a coastline along the Gulf of Mexico, often referred to as the Gulf Coast. These states — Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida — attract millions of travelers each summer with promises of emerald waters and white-sand beaches . The problem? With hundreds of miles of picture-perfect shoreline, how does one choose exactly where to go to soak up some sun?

The Gulf Coast has something for every beachgoer. Siesta Key has one of the best beaches in Florida and St. Pete Beach has some of the clearest water, while Bay St. Louis in Mississippi is known for its fresh seafood and charming downtown shops.

Below are seven of the best Gulf Coast beaches where you can park your blanket on soft sugar sand by blue-green waters for some much-needed R&R.

Henderson Beach State Park, Destin, Florida

Welcome to Florida’s Panhandle — the long, narrow strip of land bordered by Alabama, Georgia, and the Gulf of Mexico. In Destin you’ll find prime golfing, a bustling spring break and summer culture, and Henderson Beach State Park . Here, nature trails wind through the 30-foot-tall white dunes and the coastal scrub habitat, where wildlife finds refuge under the pine and oak canopies. Because of its location near the edge of the Continental Shelf, Destin has been dubbed "the world's luckiest fishing village,” where you can cast a line for the blackfin tuna, grouper, amberjack, and king mackerel that gather in the area.

The emerald green waters are calm and shallow making them perfect for snorkeling, kiteboarding, and paddle boarding (keep an eye out for the dolphin pods that take advantage of the fish found just offshore). When you’re not relaxing on the snow-white, soft sands, you’ll find entertainment, rides, and treats like funnel cakes, shaved ice, and “pier-to-plate” seafood at HarborWalk Village . You can also stop by Florida’s largest candymaker for fresh salt water taffy and pralines for shoreline snacking.

Bay St. Louis Beach, Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

ArtistheJourney/Getty Images

Biloxi gets all the press, but if you have your heart set on a clean, pristine stretch of sand and clear waters, head to the quiet seaside city of Bay St. Louis . The clean, dog-friendly beach here has that white sand the Gulf Coast is famous for so you'll want to camp out for the entire afternoon. Paddle the Grassy Point Blueway in a kayak to really appreciate the gorgeous namesake bay.

When you’ve caught too much sun, make your way through the shops and restaurants in Old Town Bay St. Louis , right off Beach Boulevard. Grab a cone of lavender-honey ice cream from Creole Creamery , a plate of fresh seafood at the Thorny Oyster , or a frozen concoction at the Daiquiri Shak before you head back to the beach.

Padre Island National Seashore, Corpus Christi, Texas

This protected stretch of the world's longest barrier island has 66 miles of undeveloped coastline and one of the last intact coastal prairie habitats in the United States . Padre Island National Seashore also borders the Laguna Madre, one of the few hypersaline lagoons in the world. Windsurf the lagoon, lounge on pristine beaches , swim in the calm, warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, or discover the area's unique environment, home to tidal mud flats, more than 380 different species of birds, and sea turtles whose hatchlings are released around June and August.

Siesta Key Beaches, Siesta Key, Florida

Jack Elka Photo/Getty Images

The 99-percent pure quartz sand on Siesta Key is always cool to the touch — an important aspect when it comes to vacationing in the Sunshine State, where summer temps average around 90 degrees. You can cool off in the blue-green, shallow waters of this barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Sarasota, Florida or join the drum circle that forms on the beach every Sunday at sunset . Beyond its Edenic shoreline, Siesta Key is known for its fun atmosphere and activities. Go sailing, fishing, or sightseeing out on the water, or hit the oyster bar or Daiquiri Deck at Siesta Key Village. Other than that, all you have to worry about — as the name suggests — is relaxing the day away on your quintessential Florida vacation .

Orange Beach, Orange Beach, Alabama

This subtropical getaway has that quintessential Gulf Coast look: A long strip of white quartz sand and aquamarine waters. Popular with spring breakers and families alike, Orange Beach has plenty to do and see from the shore and beyond. The water sports hub is perfect for boating, jet skiing, kayaking, and sailing. You can also swim and dive beneath its glassy waters. Spot playful dolphins during a sunset cruise , or paddle along the Back Bay Blueway to see the sugary sand and cypress swamps the Alabama Gulf Coast is known for. When you want to stretch your legs, hop on the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail , a 15-mile route that passes through several ecosystems, including those that house otters and alligators.

Shell Island, Panama City Beach, Florida

Many of Florida ’s beach towns are quaint little seaside respites. Not Panama City Beach , though. Located in the Panhandle, this is the closest you’ll get to Miami’s party beaches so far north. But, if you’re looking to get away from the crowds, it's hard to top a day on nearby Shell Island , which is only accessible by boat and feels like your own private island. The seven miles of wild coast is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and St. Andrew Bay and is a mostly undeveloped oasis perfect for swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, and beachcombing. Keep an eye out for the island’s namesake shells as well as the ample wildlife — like deer, ghost crabs, and sea turtles — that call it home.

To get here, take the Shell Island Shuttle or the Shell Island Ferry , or rent your own private boat to take over. Don't forget to pack plenty of water and snacks, since the island is void of shops and services.

St. Pete Beach, St. Pete Beach, Florida

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

St. Pete Beach is famous for frequent sunshine, clear Gulf waters, and its 1928, Moorish-Mediterranean “ Pink Palace ” by the sea. It’s a chill resort city on a barrier island off the coast of St. Petersburg, Florida, and is popular with families and couples looking for a friendly, quiet getaway. Walking along the sugar sand shore, swimming, spotting manatees, and celebrating the sunset in front of the Paradise Grille are all popular beach activities here. When you get parched, head to Jimmy B’s Beach Bar behind the Beachcomber Hotel or the wildly entertaining RumFish Grill , where you can dine on fresh seafood surrounded by three giant, colorful aquariums full of snook, tarpons, and stingrays (you can even snorkel in the tanks if you want a more hands-on experience!).

The 9 Best Gulf Coast Beach Towns

author image

See recent posts by Alex Temblador

If you want to enjoy the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico without splurging on an all-inclusive resort in Cancun , never fear. We’ve created a list of the best beach towns along the Gulf Coast that are perfect for a warm-weather getaway that doesn't require a passport. They’re filled with sandy shores, warm water, and plenty of fun, whether you are traveling solo, as a couple, or with the kids. Check out our great list that stretches from Texas to Florida and includes everything in between.

1. South Padre Island, Texas

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Galveston is a must-visit beach destination. Similar to South Padre Island, there are warm waters, 32 miles of sandy beaches, great weather, and plenty of water-related activities. But Galveston provides much more beyond that. It was first visited by the Europeans in 1528, meaning there’s a great dose of history on the island. For entertainment, head to Pleasure Pier or the historic downtown filled with restaurants, museums and historic sites. The city also hosts lots of festivals like Mardi Gras and ArtWalk. Be sure not to miss Moody Gardens (an awesome destination with beautiful greenery, a rainforest pyramid, and an aquarium) and the fun-filled water park Schlitterbahn.

Where to Stay: Hotel Galvez & Spa a Wyndham Grand Hotel

One of the most luxurious properties in Galveston, this hotel has more of a romantic vibe than one suited for families. Features include a refined restaurant, a beautiful spa with outdoor whirlpools, and simple, beachy rooms with comfy beds and modern amenities; it lacks a kids’ club. The standout here is the pool. Surrounded by vine-covered columns, it has a whirlpool and swim-up bar, or guests can opt for poolside drink service from attendants.

3. Grand Isle, Louisiana

If you don’t want the typical beach experience with big resorts and loud crowds, consider heading to Grand Isle for a more relaxed, wildlife-driven beach experience. This remote beach town is Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island and draws many sportsmen to its world class fishing spots and bird habitats. There are seven beaches in Grand Isle alone, and more in Grand Isle State Park, a beautiful wildlife area with trails, campsites, and a large pier for fishing. For dinner, it’s easy to find Cajun-style seafood, which in an amazing experience in itself. And if things get too quiet for you, drive a few hours to New Orleans for a livelier night and return the next day to Grand Isle for more peace.

4. Gulfport, Mississippi

https://www.instagram.com/p/BQNhexVD3h2/

Gulfport was almost completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, but that didn’t stop this beach town from rebuilding itself. In Gulfport you can enjoy 26 miles of beautiful sandy beaches, or hop on a ferry and visit Ship Island, which provides even more beaches, water fun, and the historic Fort Massachusetts to explore. Back at Gulfport, the casinos and Gulf Islands Waterpark are great places to spend time away from the beach, too.

5. Biloxi, Mississippi

https://www.instagram.com/p/BQLX5LVjB2s/

Biloxi draws visitors for three main reasons—casinos, golfing, and beaches. Golf courses are world-class, casinos are plentiful among the hotels, and the water is calm and warm here, which makes it great for swimming. As from Gulfport, there’s a ferry to Ship Island for a fun day trip. Mardi Gras may not be as big in Biloxi as it is in New Orleans, but it’s still a pretty happening place to celebrate the holiday. Plus, there’s the benefit of a beach to relax on the day after the big parade.

Where to Stay: South Beach Biloxi Hotel & Suites

The upper-middle-range South Beach Biloxi Hotel & Suites proudly advertises that it’s the only  hotel in Biloxi situated directly on the sandy beach. This and its Miami South Beach inspired decor set it apart from other nearby properties. Originally built as private condominiums, all 99 guest rooms are suite-style with full kitchens or kitchenettes. Modern guest rooms are furnished in earth tones and each includes a pull-out sofa, flat-screen TV, and  iPod dock .

6. Gulf Shores, Alabama

Gulf Shores is exploding on the beach city scene. It has 32 miles of white sandy beaches—something you might not expect to find in Alabama. Deep-sea fishing is king at Orange Beach, and travelers can’t get enough fun and sun in front of the resorts that line the beach areas. Travelers aren’t just limited to the beach here. There’s the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, water park Waterville USA, and casinos to enjoy. Plus there are a few state parks like Gulf State Park and Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge that provide fun hikes and great trails to explore.

Where to Stay: The Beach Club Resort & Spa

Tucked away from rowdy college kids, this family-friendly gated condo community sits on 86 acres near a large, private, white sandy beach. The property feels safe and secure, and has four high-rise towers on the beach as well as cottages along a man-made lake. Units have one to five bedrooms with fully equipped kitchens and living rooms.

This Underrated Coast Is a Parade of Hissing Gators and White-Sand Beaches

So much more than the redneck riviera..

Published on 8/19/2020 at 5:31 PM

gulf shores, alabama

Americans sometimes forget we have a third coastline. Sure, we’re aware the Gulf of Mexico has beaches, but we tend to lump those in with Florida, which then gets lumped in with the east coast, which means the whole rest of the coast from Alabama to Texas gets criminally overlooked. The Gulf Coast is a lot more than the “redneck Riviera” it’s long since outgrown, a land of magical swamps, remote white-sand beaches, artists, musicians, and colorful characters. And it is the best coastal road trip few in America have taken.

Beginning at the end of Florida in Pensacola, then heading west to the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain near New Orleans, you’ll skirt the turquoise waters of the gulf while dipping into lush marshlands and storybook small towns. You’ll see a 50-foot lady in a lake, feed alligators, and discover a side of the south you never knew. Come along and see why the Gulf Coast truly is America’s most under-appreciated coastal road trip.

The Flora-Bama

The Flora-Bama

Perdido Key, Florida If America has an icon of beachside drinking, it is the Flora-Bama , an epic wooden roadhouse on the border of Alabama and Florida about half an hour south of Pensacola in Perdido Key. It’s a maze of live music stages, sticky floors, and bras on the ceiling, where stairways seem to run sideways and you’re never sure what room -- or state -- you’ve stepped into. Imagine MC Escher designing a multi-level beach bar with SEC college flags and plywood bathroom stalls and you’re getting close.

Peer into the bar’s cavernous liquor room, where hundreds of gallons of liquor are connected to the Bama’s bar guns, to get a sense of the kind of volume this place does. It even serves its trademark bushwhackers during its weekly church services, where cracking a beer from the pews doesn’t even raise an eyebrow. If that’s all too buttoned up for you, check back in during the annual mullet toss, the Sturgis of coastal country life where competitors line up to see who can throw a fish the furthest across the state line.

MORE:   Flora-Bama is one of America’s best beach bars. Here are 20 more.

Gulf State Park

Gulf State Park

Orange Beach, Alabama After responsibly enjoying the Flora-Bama, head west on Perdido Beach Boulevard about 15 for the sweeping gulf views to Gulf State Park . Here you can immerse yourself in the sand dunes and Spanish moss that made Alabama’s beaches so beautiful before the condo boom. If you’ve got the gear, the park’s got plenty of car-camping sites. Or reserve one of the fully-furnished cabins that sit right along Shelby Lakes.

You’ll also want to take advantage of the park’s free bike-share program, where you can hop on its 28 miles of trails and roll under live oaks, then over a boardwalk to the area’s only stretch of sand not lined with condo towers. There, you can post up with a daiquiri from the park concession stand with nothing but sand dunes, pelicans, and the lapping waves to join you.

Gulf Coast Zoo, Stonehenge, and the Lady in the Lake

Gulf Shores, Alabama Cross the arcing bridges of Highway 182 into Gulf Shores, and in about half an hour you’ll be at the Gulf Coast Zoo’s sprawling new 25-acre home. While the animal encounters that made this zoo famous are on covid-hold, you’ll still be able to take a safari jeep ride through lions and tigers, zipline over the park, and feed Benjamin and Akayla – the park’s new giraffes who’ll happily take some leaves from your hands with their curling, sandy tongues.

On your way out of town, traverse Alabama’s Coastal Connector (legal name: US-98) and stop by Bamahenge, a scale replica of Stonehenge made completely of fiberglass, for some reason. Then continue into Barber Marina and meet the Lady in the Lake – a 50-foot sculpture of a very large woman taking a bath in the middle of the marina, also for… some reason.

MORE:  While you’re here, might as well walk through a giant shark’s mouth

Gulf Coast Gator Ranch

Moss Point, Mississippi Keep cruising on the Coastal Connector through Mobile and the towering pines and magnolias of Mississippi, and in a couple of hours you’ll reach the Gulf Coast Gator Ranch in Moss Point. There, you can take an airboat tour through the swamp, or dare to feed the dozens of gators who lounge around the ranch house all afternoon. Just be prepared: The hissing sound they make as you toss food into the swamp is something you’ll hear in your nightmares for years.

MORE:   We’re not sure what’s scarier -- actual alligators, or this alligator MAN

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

Continuing west on US-90 about 45 minutes, you’ll skirt the coastline a few more times on the way to one of America’s finest beach towns in Ocean Springs. The city will greet you with live music pouring out of its dense collection of bars along Government Street, and a young, friendly crowd eager to show you why coastal Mississippi is nothing like the Mississippi many imagine . Hotels and restaurants lean upscale and creative, with spots like The Roost , where you can enjoy original cocktails on the shady front patio before retiring to your uniquely designed suite.

Seemingly every block has a cool bar with live music on a sprawling outdoor patio, interspersed with funky galleries and artists’ studios, independent shops, a giant art museum , and seriously good restaurants. And then there are the beaches: the Gulf here is calm, prime for paddleboarding to soak in Mississippi’s natural beauty. Or take a boat out to the barrier islands and see beaches so remote you might forget you’re anywhere near civilization.

MORE:   You might not want to leave. Luckily, you might be able to afford not to

Ship Island

Ship Island

Gulfport, Mississippi From Ocean Springs, keep going down the largest stretch of man-made beach in America along US-90. The scenic drive offers gulf views on the left, and stately historic homes on the right. You’ll also pass the Frank Gehry-designed Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art , which is worth the hour or so it takes to peruse abstract pottery from the “Mad Potter of Biloxi” George Ohr, along with rotating exhibitions that range from African-American photography to 21st century surrealism.

After about half an hour you’ll reach downtown Gulfport, where you can jump on an hour-long ferry ride to a little slice of the Caribbean in Mississippi at Ship Island . The soft, white sandy beach is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and though its landmark Ft. Massachusetts is currently closed, venture to the northern part of the island and find a pristine island beach you’ll likely have to yourself.

Bay St. Louis

Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

The white sands continue along US-90 all the way to Bay St. Louis, a tiny artist town about 45 minutes east of New Orleans. The streets of this one-time fishing outpost are now filled with art galleries and clever souvenir shops, alternating with restaurants like the Starfish Café , a pay-what-you-want laboratory for local culinary students. You can also grab a drink along the water at Buoys Bar or, if the weather isn’t cooperating, tuck into the Shops of Century Hall , a  mall of local artists with everything from gulf-inspired paintings to elaborate Mardi Gras headpieces.

Cajun Encounters

Cajun Encounters

Slidell, Louisiana Though it might be tempting to dip into New Orleans from Bay St. Louis, instead take this road-tripping opportunity to delve headfirst in Cajun country. Your first stop will be at Cajun Encounters near Slidell, where colorful guides take you deep into what they describe as “Bobby Boucher country” along the Pearl River and the Honey Island swamp.  In addition to boating deep into black water and cypress trees, you’ll also venture by homes that feel as removed from society as small villages on the Amazon. Though these ones on the Pearl are less than an hour from New Orleans.

Much of the tour through Honey Island feels like a movie set, whether that’s the aforementioned Waterboy backdrop on the river, or Mama Odie’s tree from The Princess and the Frog . That tree sits just a few feet away from a family of racoons who, when tours come by to feed them, stand up and look like less trigger-happy versions of Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy .

Downtown Covington, Louisiana

Covington, Louisiana

Much of the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain was originally developed as a weekend country getaway for city-weary New Orleanians. Today, it’s still a calming waterside escape, easily traversable by car. Your best bet for a base will be Covington, where the revamped historic Southern Hotel offers a lively craft cocktail lounge in the lobby, and probably the area’s best restaurant at Oxlot 9 . You’ll also want to stop into H.J. Smith and Sons General Store, a hardware store which doubles as a city historical museum. You may recognize it from its brief cameo in The Highwaymen , where Bonnie and Clyde’s dead bodies are paraded past its facade.

Cane Bayou

Lacombe, Louisiana Stop off at Liz’s Where Y’at Diner in Mandeville for some devil-may-care Cajun food -- spicy sausage scrambled eggs, crab au gratin, and bigger-than-your-mouth hamburgers --and linger with a to-go drink on the public beach at Fontainebleau State Park next door.

Once you’re mobile again, take the long curve on Highway 190 leaving Mandeville: You’ll pass what looks like an unassuming convenience store and bait shop with a blue sign reading “ Bayou Adventure .” And while you can certainly stop in for your daily fix of night crawlers and an impressive collection of local beer, this mini mart and café also offers kayak tours through the Cane Bayou… with chips and a sandwich included (go for the alligator sausage).

Their sunset paddle is the perfect way to end your Gulf Coast adventure. Pack a six-pack of local beer into a deluxe kayak and silently glide through woodlands, cypress swamp, and marshlands as the sky changes color. Arrive at the mouth of Lake Pontchartrain and enjoy the sunset as hungry alligators lurk nearby looking for non-human food. Once the sun goes down, you’ll return back through the swamp in complete darkness, with nothing but peering orange gator eyes and croaking frogs to guide your trip back. It’s part nature float, part horror movie, and a fitting final impression from this truly unique region.

The best Gulf Coast beaches for the perfect getaway

We can't wait to raise our beach umbrella and recline on that powder-soft sand

Megan duBois

Just the name ‘Gulf Coast’ gets your beach umbrella pushed up and lodged in the sand: this region that stretches from Texas all the way across and down to the Florida Keys offers some of the most pristine soft sand and vibrant blue water you could ever ask for. You can choose how to spend your time: walking for miles along the shore looking for shells and listening to the waves crest? Eating freshly-caught seafood at a local restaurant while gazing out at a sunset vista? You might be into the watersports that get your heart racing, like kiteboarding, surfing, parasailing, and snorkeling. Or maybe you’re up for a nightlife scene and dancing until dawn casts a jaw-dropping rosy hue over the horizon again. Whatever your vibe, you know that these beaches will make your summer sun-glazed and memorable. Here’s our list of the 11 best Gulf Coast beaches in the U.S.

Top Gulf Coast beaches

St. Pete Beach, FL

1.  St. Pete Beach, FL

Soft white sands and rich blue waters greet visitors at this beach known for its watersports like windsurfing and parasailing. Stand-up paddleboarding is also popular because the waters can be relatively calm some days. The beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico and warm sun draw visitors out of their hotel rooms and onto the beach for the day. Just off the beach are some fantastic dining options, most of which are within walking distance of the sandy shore. Visitors are encouraged to grab a bucket at the beach entrance to pick up trash; plastics can heat the sand to a degree that it threatens the eggs of sea turtles who nest in it.

Anna Maria Island, FL

2.  Anna Maria Island, FL

Beautiful Anna Maria Island offers the white sand and turquoise water that you expect from a Gulf Coast beach, as well as a historic fishing scene. Visit the still-active Cortez Historic Fishing Village, founded circa 1880 by fishers from North Carolina, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The island is also known for its Floribbean cuisine, merging Floridian and Caribbean ingredients. The Chiles Hospitality Group focuses on sustainability in the culinary world, with a bakery, three waterfront restaurants—Sandbar Seafood & Spirits, Beach House Waterfront Restaurant, and Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant & Pub—and a 26-acre organic farm producing vegetables, fruit and flowers to brighten the table.

Gulf Shores, AL

3.  Gulf Shores, AL

While Alabama might be known for its college teams, notably the Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama, there’s another tide in Gulf Shores. The beautiful beach town is known for its state park of the same name, where stretches of beaches boast white sand and bright blue and green waters. This is a great location for friends who are traveling together since there’s ample nightlife and entertainment in the city after the sun goes down at the beach.

Gulfport, MS

4.  Gulfport, MS

Along the shoreline of Mississippi, travelers will run into Gulfport, which is the second-largest city in the state. The beach here is bright and clean, with a large fishing pier that goes out into the ocean. While at the beach, you’ll likely see people jet skiing or swimming, but the beach has a very relaxed vibe that also lends itself to having a quiet picnic or lounging in a chair. Just a short drive away are the casinos of Biloxi, which are a fun way to spend an evening.

Panama City Beach, FL

5.  Panama City Beach, FL

When it comes to major tourist beaches, Panama City Beach is second only to Daytona. Families have been traveling to the area for decades to walk along Pier Park, which is the main shopping hub in the city. There are two nature preserves in the area that allow visitors to take in the natural wonders of Florida, including wildlife and of course the beach. March and April are the most popular time at Panama City Beach because of Spring Break, so if you don’t want to be surrounded by college students, plan to visit the 27 miles of beach at almost any other time of year.

Seagrove Beach, FL

6.  Seagrove Beach, FL

Seagrove Beach is a beautiful two-mile stretch of beach. Because of its large size and the area’s underdevelopment, it's easily one of the least crowded beaches in the area. This makes Seagrove Beach one of the best places to enjoy a quiet day with family and friends. The area is known for its magnolia and live oak tree groves that can be found just past the shoreline, and offer plenty of shade for the times you’re not at the beach.

Padre Island National Seashore, TX

7.  Padre Island National Seashore, TX

Padre Island National Seashore is known for being the longest stretch of an undeveloped barrier island in the world, which makes its beaches pristine and desirable for folks visiting the area. Just about any type of activity goes here, from kayaking along the shore to windsurfing or just looking for shells. This is also a popular spot for nesting sea turtles, so if you’re lucky you may even see some hatchlings pop out of their nests and make their way to the ocean.

Orange Beach, AL

8.  Orange Beach, AL

Compared to the party vibe of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach in Alabama offers a more laid-back beach vibe. Here you can do everything from lounging around to casting a line into the ocean for a little fishing. Be sure to visit the wharf at Orange Beach, which is where shops, restaurants, games, mini-golf, and more can be found just steps from the shore. For a more thoughtful visit, you can explore Native American history and fishing history at the Orange Beach Indian & Sea Museum with free admission.

Grand Isle State Park, LA

9.  Grand Isle State Park, LA

Along the east end of the barrier island of Grand Isle is Grand Isle State Park . The park has sandy beaches and a 400-ft long fishing pier that draws people in throughout the year. One thing that makes this beach unique is that you can enjoy overnight camping under the stars. Grand Isle is a breakwater between the Gulf and the inland channels leading to bayou tributaries of the Mississippi River, and awesome deep-sea fishing happens here. Unfortunately, damage from Hurricane Ida has temporarily closed the park; check the website for updates if you are planning to visit.

Clearwater Beach, FL

10.  Clearwater Beach, FL

No list of beautiful Gulf Coast beaches can fail to include Clearwater Beach, which in 2018 and 2019 was named the best beach in America, awarded by TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards. Here you have excitement on the main strip but plenty of space to relax at a slower pace, such as the set-back expanse of the newly opened JW Marriott Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa . Enjoy a day at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where you can see dolphins and sea turtles...or try to catch a glimpse of them in the wild at this beautiful stretch of beach. The sand here isn’t made of seashell dust; it’s quartz from the Appalachian Mountains, explaining its incredible powdery quality.

Grayton Beach, FL

11.  Grayton Beach, FL

Part of 26-mile-long South Walton, where more than 40 percent of the area land is set aside for preservation, Grayton Beach is one of the 16 beach neighborhoods claiming their own traditions and style. Off Grayton Beach's coast, check out the country’s first permanent underwater museum, the Underwater Museum of Art. At this eco-tourism site, underwater sculptures over time become a living reef supporting sea life. You’ll also want to explore the rare coastal dune lakes; these only appear in a handful of places around the world: New Zealand, Madagascar, Australia...and South Walton! These shallow (5 feet), constantly changing lakes have varying levels of saltwater and support a wide variety of underwater life. You can fish, paddleboard or hike the shores to enjoy their uniqueness. Finally, Grayton Beach is the only place in the country where charter fishing trips depart directly from the beach, getting you to your fishing spot super quickly.

What’s better than a beach vacation? If you’re looking for the perfect spot for a getaway, this list of beaches on the Gulf Coast is exactly what you need. The crisp, white sand beaches of Florida, the high-adventure beaches in Texas or anything in between, this list has your next vacation destination!

The Gulf Coast is known for it’s stunning beaches . These emerald waters are perfect for swimming, sunning, fishing, boating, jet skiing….should I continue?

Whether your perfect vacation is a small-town feel with laid-back island life or bustling beaches and tons of nightlife, you’ll be booking your next getaway in no time.

Real quick though, as a beach lover who’s continually checking off travel bucket list locations , I haven’t been everywhere yet. So I called in a few travel blogger friends to help create this epic list. Enjoy!

Beaches on the Gulf Coast map

First let’s see them on the map. If you’re a visual person (like I am), this may be helpful for planning purposes.

Then be sure to download this beach packing list so you know exactly what to take on your trip, too!

Alright, let’s get to the list!

Best beaches on the Gulf Coast

So I won’t say which beach is my favorite, but let’s start this list off with a bang!

1. Siesta Key Beach, Florida

beaches on the gulf coast white sand beach teal water red lifeguard stand

Best known for: impeccable white quartz sand Address: Siesta Beach, FL 34242

Rated the #1 beach in the USA by TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards™, Siesta Key beach on the western coast of Florida has it all.

The attraction? The gorgeous, white sand that doesn’t get hot! It’s made up of over 99% quartz, where most other beaches are a mixture of quartz and other rock. It feels powdery to the touch, almost like you’re walking on flour instead of sand.

The cooling effect of the quartz is a welcome characteristic of this beach, even on the hottest of summer days. There are plenty of things to do in Siesta Beach , too. The beach complex includes multiple restaurants, playgrounds, sand volleyball courts and more.

As a bonus, the surrounding landscape isn’t filled with high-rise hotels. Instead, the local hotels, condos, restaurants, etc. are lower to the ground, creating a more natural look to the beach. Siesta Key Beach is family friendly, but the Village on Siesta Key has decent nightlife.

Pro tip: although the parking lot is large and the beach is wide, come early to snag a spot closest to the water. The weekends fill up especially fast!

2. cape san blas, florida.

best vacation spots gulf coast view of pink beach at sunset with fences and footprints

Best known for: a quiet getaway Address: Cape San Blas, FL 32456

Cape San Blas is tucked away in the Florida panhandle just an hour from Destin and 2 from Tallahassee, right on the coast. In 2018 it was hit pretty hard by Hurricane Michael and is still recovering but that doesn’t mean it’s lost any joy to visit.

This is the perfect beach getaway because of how quiet it is. It’s truly one of the best Gulf Coast Florida beaches!

If you want a party beach, look elsewhere. This is great for anyone looking to relax, do some shelling and maybe read on the beach.

While there aren’t any hotels on the peninsula, there are tons of vacation home available to rent on the beach or bayside or just in between.  The best time to go just depends on what you’re interested in.

For swimming, summer is best. If you’re looking for just relaxing and avoiding Florida crowds, it’s the perfect warm winter vacation in the USA .

There isn’t much when it comes to restaurants on the Cape but a short drive into Port St. Joe gives you more variety. Provisions and Joe Mama’s Wood Fired Pizza are both delicious.

Make sure to do some  shelling on the beach , visit the St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, walk the boardwalk at the bayside park , take a day trip to Apalachicola and just relax on the beach, enjoying the waves away from all the South Florida visitors.

3. Gulf Shores, Alabama (an underrated spot on this list of best beaches on the Gulf Coast)

beaches on the gulf coast view of tan sand ocean waves and blue sky with white clouds

Best known for: white sand and gorgeous sunsets Address: 101 Gulf Shores Pkwy, Gulf Shores, AL 36542

One of my favorite beaches in all of the US also happens to be one of the best vacation spots in the Gulf Coast! A visit to Gulf Shores, Alabama is the perfect getaway for families, couples or a girls’ trip (hello bachelorette parties!)

Between the plethora of activities, restaurants and of course, beaches, you won’t get bored in Gulf Shores! Build sand castles, go on dolphin cruises, fish from the pier at Gulf State Park or even bike the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trails. Here’s a list of more exciting things to do in Gulf Shores with kids .

And if you’re looking for a quiet weekend away, this beachy spot is one of the best for that, too. Rent a hotel with ocean-front views right on the beach. Or stay a bit further inland in a vacation rental for a more affordable vacation style.

You can fly into Pensacola, Florida and drive about an hour west to get to Gulf Shores. The area is a must-see for sure!

4. Indian Rocks Beach, Florida

best gulf coast florida beaches walking trail through trees to beach in distance

Best known for: white sand and gorgeous sunsets Address: 1700 Gulf Blvd, Indian Rocks Beach, FL 33785

Indian Rocks Beach is one of my favorite US Gulf Coast beaches because commercial development has mostly bypassed it. The famous neighbors – Clearwater Beach to the north and St Pete Beach to the south – are lined with giant buildings, and  Indian Rocks Beach remains one of the few Florida Gulf beaches with an Old Florida vibe .

Things to do in Indian Rocks Beach  include relaxing on the beaches, celebrating nightly sunsets and enjoying fresh Florida Gulf cuisine. Walking, bicycling and paddling in the ocean or calmer intracoastal waters are common activities.

Nature lovers will enjoy the Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve with a half-mile boardwalk trail over mangroves.  Kolb Park has a skateboard park and courts (basketball, tennis, pickleball). Check the small public library across the street for $1 paperbacks and free magazines to read on the beach.

The relative quaintness of Indian Rocks Beach makes it an ideal vacation destination for families, couples, or anyone wanting to relax, savor nature or enjoy quieter beaches.

Like most Florida Gulf Coast beaches, Indian Rocks Beach is a year-round destination, with peak season in February through Spring Break. Most years, October through November are excellent times to visit , because the weather is amazing and not as many people are visiting.

A few free parking spots are at several of the 27 beach entrances. Arrive early and read the signs (some require a permit).

Smart locals and savvy visitors skip driving and use the Suncoast Beach Trolley , which covers from Clearwater Beach down to St. Pete Beach. Download the app and efficiently time arrivals and not wait too long.

5. Miramar Beach, Florida (one of my favorite beaches on the Gulf Coast of Florida)

wooden chairs on deck overlooking sand dunes and beach near sunset

Best known for: Perfect sand and laid-back atmosphere Address: 2396 Scenic Hwy 98, Miramar Beach, FL 32550

Florida’s panhandle has some pretty spectacular beaches! One of my favorites is just east of the bustling city of Destin, called Miramar Beach. The gorgeous white sand and turquoise water combination draws you in and will make you want to stay forever!

Whether your beach style is to lay out and soak up the sun or rent jet skis or kayaks and explore the coast, there’s a little bit of everything at Miramar Beach. I’ve vacationed in Miramar Beach several times and I’ve seen dolphins from the beach during each visit!

One of the best parts of visiting this beach is that the water is crystal clear and warm. It’s actually one of the best beaches in Florida for families because of the calm waves and great sand, too. The best time of year to vacation at Miramar Beach is May through September for warm weather and sunshine.

And if you’re into shopping, one of the largest outlet malls in the country is right down the street, Silver Sands Premium Outlets. It’s so big you can seriously get lost there!

Pro tip: stay near the beach. Because of it’s proximity to Destin, the traffic in the area can be intense.

Miramar Beach is still quiet compared to it’s lively neighbor, and is by far one of the best Gulf Coast Florida beaches!

6. Galveston, Texas

beaches on the gulf coast view of amusement park on pier with ocean waves in Galveston Texas

Best known for: family-friendly beaches Address: Galveston Beach: 6285 Seawall Blvd, Galveston, TX 77551

Located just south of Houston on the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston is among the most classic beach destinations in the Lone Star State, and a fantastic Gulf Coast getaway !

While Galveston is known for its family-friendly beaches and fishing trips, there is plenty more to discover about Galveston off the sand.

As a popular destination for wealthy Texans during the Victorian era, Galveston’s historic East End district is perfect for discovering gorgeous homes, including some, like Bishop’s Palace and Moody Mansion, that are now open to the public.

For another reminder of Galveston’s wealthy past, check out the Strand. Today, the district is known for its shopping and restaurants, but dial back a century or so, and this area was known as the “Wall Street of the Southwest”.

More fun things to do in Galveston include birdwatching at Galveston Island State Park, exploring Moody Gardens with your favorite kids, renting bikes to ride along the seawall and visiting the Galveston Pleasure Pier.

The Galveston Pleasure Pier is one of Galveston’s most iconic sights , and after being closed since 1961, reopened in 2012 to entertain a new generation of visitors.

Whether you’re looking for a weekend of shopping and house museums, a family-friendly amusement park to enjoy, or simply a relaxing place to stick your toes in the sand, Galveston has what you’re looking for. It’s certainly one of the best Gulf of Mexico beaches!

7. Clearwater Beach, Florida (one of the best Gulf Coast Florida beaches)

beaches on the gulf coast view of pier at sunset orange sky with ocean waves at clearwater beach

Best known for: clear, shallow water and white sand Address: Clearwater, FL

Another Florida beauty makes list of the best beaches on the Gulf Coast!

Because Clearwater Beach is one of the more popular beaches in Florida, it does get busy so expect to see lots of people.

But that also means plenty of amenities! Rent beach chairs and umbrellas right on the beach…one of my favorite ways to spend a beach day – in comfort!

While you’re at the beach, be sure to check out the iconic Pier 60 Park. It’s a fun spot for fishing, catching sunsets, watching pelicans and it’s really the hot spot along the beach. Home to a daily festival of entertainers and artisans, there’s never a dull moment!

On the water, take a pirate cruise , deep sea fishing adventure or sunset cruise . And of course the city itself has a ton of activities like the Clearwater Aquarium, Sand Key Bridge and the Celebration Station Entertainment Complex (including go-karts!). The possibilities are endless in Clearwater!

Gulf Coast beaches (continued)

There’s been some really beautiful spots already mentioned…but we’re only a fraction of the way there. Let’s keep reviewing the best spots for Gulf Coast vacations!

8. Beaches in Naples, Florida

pier at sunset with moody sky and ocean view of one of the best beaches on the gulf coast

Best known for: shelling and sunsets Beach address: Barefoot Beach: 505 Barefoot Beach Blvd, Bonita Springs, FL 34134

When you’re looking for the best beaches on the Gulf Coast of Florida, look no further than Naples!

Consistently ranked as some of the top beaches in Florida, the beaches in Naples Florida are almost tropical with powdery white sand, gentle surf, clear warm water and an amazing number of seashells . And there’s almost a dozen gorgeous beaches to choose from!

The Naples Municipal Beach at the iconic Naples Pier is excellent and within walking distance of most downtown restaurants and accommodations.  The beach at Lowdermilk Park in central Naples has a concession, bath houses, paddle board and kayak rentals so it’s perfect for families.

Just a short distance up the coast  Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park  is secluded with amazing beaches and a walking trail with an observation tower. Walk the long boardwalk through the mangroves at Clam Pass Beach Park or take the free tram to arrive at the beachside concession.

To watch fiery sunsets over the Gulf after a quieter day in the sun, Barefoot Beach is one of the very best . You’ll find plenty of parking, places to eat and a pristine beach.

Without question the best time to visit Naples is late spring into early fall. This is when the water is warmest, shelling is excellent and the beaches are not crowded.

9. Rutherford Beach, Louisiana

tan sand white waves blue sky

Best known for: wide open spaces and camping on the beach Beach address: Gulf of Mexico, Creole, LA 70632

The one and only Louisiana beach on this list is a must-see if you’re searching for peace and quiet, or simply love vacationing off the grid. Rutherford Beach, Louisiana is near Creole and is a gem for rustic beach vacations.

Because of it’s remote location, there aren’t many services available, but it’s a perfect day trip or camping adventure. The area’s most popular activity is kayaking. Since the beach sits on the mouth of the Mermentau River, you can rent kayaks and float down the river to the Gulf outlet.

Nearby accommodations can be found in the town of Cameron, just a few miles up the road. Other things to do in the are are visit nearby Holly Beach, or take the Creole Nature Trail to see Louisiana’s untamed wilderness along Highway 27, also known as Louisiana’s Outback .

This is a destination for those looking for a remote beach location. Because of the low number of tourists to the area, it’s also one of the best cheap Gulf Coast beach vacations on the list.

10. Madeira Beach, Florida (another favorite on this list of best Gulf Coast beaches)

beaches on the gulf coast white sand teal water blue sky

Best known for: small-town vibes and spectacular fishing Beach address: 14400 Gulf Blvd, Madeira Beach, FL 33708

Locals call it Mad beach, the Madeira Beach along the Gulf Coast in Florida is another underrated beach destination . One of the smaller beaches on this list, with only 2.5 miles long, it’s definitely worth a visit!

The beach is beautiful white sand that we’ve seen so many times on this list, but one of the main attractions in this area is the fresh seafood. Madeira Beach is known as the grouper capital of the world , with an annual seafood festival unlike any other.

Off the water, one of the area’s biggest draws is the historic Saint John’s Pass Village. More than 100 restaurants and shops plus a boardwalk provides visitors plenty of entertainment.

There you’ll find art and crafts made by locals, boutique clothing shops and jewelry and a bunch of other activities making it one of the best things to do at Madeira beach.

Pro tip: book your accommodations early. This is a small island with limited options!

Madeira Beach is one of the best beaches on the Gulf Coast of Florida, and it’s a fabulous vacation destination for a beachy getaway.

11. Dauphin Island, Alabama

dauphin island alabama view of pier and beach at sunset

Best known for: small-town feel and civil war history Address: 109 Bienville Blvd, Dauphin Island, AL 36528

The barrier island of Dauphin Island is in the Gulf of Mexico beaches off the coast of Mobile, Alabama. This island that you’ve likely never heard of offers white powdery sand, clear blue water, huge live oak trees, and a fun and laid-back island feel.

Dauphin Island is a popular destination for beach-lovers, history-lovers and birders alike. Visit Dauphin Island Public Beach to dip your toes in the hot sand and appreciate the tranquility of the area. And added bonus—this beach is also dog friendly.

If you love history, visit Fort Gaines, front-and-center in the Battle of Mobile Bay fought during the Civil War. Shell Mound Park is an homage to the Native American history on the island.

Birders will love the island as it’s on the migration path for birds that fly south for the winter. If you want to learn more about local plants and animals, check out the popular Sea Lab Estuarium .

Summers are hot and humid, so the most popular times to visit are in the spring and fall.

However, there are some big festivals in the summer including a 4th of July festival and the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo that draw crowds. With the beautiful beaches and cool waters, you’ll find tourists and locals alike enjoying the island from spring to fall.

Dauphin Island is a popular destination for its beautiful beaches, history, and its proximity to the lovely small city of Mobile. So, cross the bridges to Dauphin Island, grab a golf cart for transportation, and see all of the magic this small island offers for a perfect beach trip .

12. Beaches of Key West, Florida (one of the most fun Gulf Coast vacations)

pole with signs for locations with beach in distance

Best known for: sunshine and culture Address: Smathers Beach: 2601 S Roosevelt Blvd, Key West, FL 33040

This tiny island at the tip of the Florida Keys sure packs a punch! With a total of 11 beaches and a bazillion restaurants and bars, this island is a lot of fun!

Grab your beach towel and head to Smathers Beach. At over 3000 feet long, this is the island’s largest beach. It’s also located near the Southernmost point of the Continental US, which is a fun tourist attraction to see.

I visited this lovely island as a part of a Miami to Key West road trip , which is an unforgettable drive that includes many more beaches and will seriously make you fall in love with the Florida Keys!

Anyway, the beaches on Key West are a little rougher under toe, but nothing a good pair of water shoes won’t fix! The allure of the beaches on Key West is all the water activities , like jet skiing , snorkeling and parasailing (my favorite!) And after a long day, hit some of the best restaurants and bars in the US!

13. Marco Island, Florida

rocky sandy beach white wave teal water blue sky gulf coast beaches

Best known for: shelling, kayaking and nature Address: Tigertail Beach: 430 Hernando Dr, Marco Island, FL 34145

Found in the chain of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands, Marco Island sits in the Gulch of Mexico and boasts miles of sandy beaches and beautiful water. If you’re looking to get out on the water there are a bunch of fun opportunities through fishing, looking for dolphins, kayaking, shelling and boating.

The beaches around Marco Island are home to some of the best shells in the world like whelks, olive shells and scallops. Along with the famous  beaches on Marco Island , the island is known for world-class golf courses, shopping, and nearby Everglades National Park.

If you’re looking for an adventure, head out in a canoe or kayak to the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge . In the winter, you can spot manatees along with otters, alligators and a variety of birds. The best part is there is no entry fee!

The best months to go to Marco Island are January through May and October through December. The summer months are incredibly hot on Marco Island and are often the rainiest.

During the spring, the temperatures are in the perfect mid-70s and there is little chance for rain. With the best weather does come the highest prices. If you’re on a budget, the best time to visit Marco Island is in July.

14. Gulfport, Mississippi

gulfport mississippi yellow sand boxes on beach

Best known for: shallow, calm water Beach address: W Beach BlvdGulfport, MS 39501

The oversized beach of Gulfport, Mississippi is the perfect getaway for families or couples looking for a relaxing getaway. Gulfport Beach is rarely crowded because of it’s size and the parking is free! That’s a win-win! The soft, white sand is perfect under toe, making you never want to leave this fabulous vacation spot.

Gulfport Beach has a ton of amenities on the beach and nearby. Rent chairs and umbrellas to make your beach day comfortable. Or get active with beach-side rentals like kayaks, paddle boards and jet skis.

On land, explore all the amazing seafood restaurants, ride the rides at the adventure park or visit the Institute for Marine Mammal Research. This is one of the most underrated beaches on the Gulf Coast, and one you’ll want to check out for sure!

15. Honeymoon Island, Dunedin, Florida

kayak near ocean teal color and blue sky

Best known for: small town vibes and natural beaches Beach address: Honeymoon Island, Dunedin, FL 3469

If you’re looking for a low-key beach vacation spot on the Gulf Coast which offers more than just the beach, look to Dunedin, Florida. With a quaint small town vibe, this town north of Clearwater offers not one but two amazing state park beaches to visit – Honeymoon Island State Park and Caladesi Island State Park.

Before the 1920s, these two barrier islands formed one large island known as Hog Island. In 1921, a hurricane split the island in two, opening an inlet now called Hurricane Pass.

Honeymoon Island is accessible by car, bicycle and boat and has more than 3 miles of white sand beach including a doggie beach. Visitors to the park can also enjoy several miles of nature trails, a nature center, and a café.

Across Hurricane Pass, Caladesi Island can only be accessed by boat or a ferry from Honeymoon Island. This state park often lands on Dr. Beach’s Top Ten Beaches list because of its pristine white sand and calm turquoise waters. Visitors here can also enjoy the concessions, a nature trail, or even spend the night in the marina if you own a boat.

Of course, all great beach vacation destinations should offer more than a great beach. In Dunedin, take a day away from the beach to shop in the franchise-free downtown area.

Visit one the Dunedin Fine Arts Center or one of the many art galleries, enjoy a craft IPA at one of the nine craft breweries (including Florida’s oldest), or satiate your hunger at one of  Dunedin’s award-winning restaurants .

Dunedin certainly deserves a spot on this list, and is one of the best beaches on the Gulf Coast of Florida!

16. Panama City Beach, Florida (one of the best Gulf beaches for nightlife)

Panama City beach florida panhandle view of teal ocean white waves and hotels in distance

Best known for: crystal clear water, vibrant nightlife Beach address: 17053-17001 Front Beach Rd, Panama City Beach, FL 32413

With 27 miles of coastline in the area, Panama City Beach will wow hearts and make you want to book a return trip. With top-notch entertainment, scenery, restaurants and adventure, Panama City Beach is the perfect vacation spot along the Gulf.

My time in Panama City Beach was mostly enjoyed sitting on the gorgeous white sand beach. But off the water, a whole other world awaits. Whether you’re looking for the best vacation spots in the Gulf Coast for a couples getaway, girls’ trip or family vacation, this beach town has it all!

Water adventures include airboat tours , sunset cruises, dolphin tours , snorkeling adventures and more. Oh, and don’t forget about relaxing on the gorgeous beach!

Off the water, ride go carts, visit amusement parks or Ripley’s Believe It or Not, check out the city pier, visit a waterpark or even the Gulf World Marine Park – there’s so much to do in Panama City.

The nightlife never ends, either. With legendary karaoke, live music, bars, dance clubs and restaurants, this vibrant city comes alive when the sun goes down.

17. Mustang Island, Texas

best gulf coast beaches view of tan and white waves blue water from air

Best known for: empty beaches, family friendly Beach address: Mustang Beach: Access Rd No 3, Corpus Christi, TX 78418

Just a quick 20 minute drive from Corpus Christi, Mustang Island is home to one of the most fabulous beaches on the Gulf Coast. It’s the kind you can sit and watch waves crashing on the shore all day.

In this part of coastal Texas, one of the most popular beach activities is driving on the beach. Drive until you find the perfect spot to stop and then enjoy the water, sunshine and sound of the ocean.

The sand in this part of the Gulf Coast isn’t the bright white sand along other parts of the coast – instead it’s firmer tan sand that is perfect for beach walks, volleyball and driving.

Pro tip: rent a 4×4 vehicle for maximum entertainment!

The nearby Port Aransas and Corpus Christi offer plenty of things to do when you need a break from the beach. Port Aransas has a fun fishing pier, delicious ice cream shop and shopping. Corpus Christi has amazing seafood, waterfront sea wall and the USS Lexington – a war ship.

The best time to visit is April – May and September – October to avoid crowds and to find the best prices. Come to Mustang Island Texas for a mix of relaxation, casual entertainment and excellent food.

Even though it’s a small island, there’s still quite a bit of things to do in Anna Maria Island .

Spend your time lounging on the beach, building sandcastles, fishing from the pier or watching wildlife. Dolphins, sting rays and manatees are all common sights on the island. Oh, and make sure you try the tacos at Poppo’s Taqueria – so good!

Instead, you’ll enjoy the small-town atmosphere and the panoramic views of the coast the moment you cross the St. George Island Bridge. Upon arriving on the island, you’ll see the iconic lighthouse that soars above the main beach right ahead.

St. George Island is a perfect vacation spot for those looking to go a bit off-the-beaten-path and experience slow travel.

You’ll be absorbed into the local laidback life and fall in love with the vast and uncrowded miles of beach. The best time to visit is at the beginning of summer before sweltering days arrive so you can enjoy exploring the island.

This unique barrier island is home to two protected areas, including the Cape St. George Island State Reserve to the west and St. George Island State Park to the east.

Best known for: beautiful beaches, history Beach address: 41 Fort Pickens Rd, Pensacola Beach, FL 32561

The powdery white sand of Florida’s Gulf Coast beaches has been mentioned many times on this list, however the emerald waters of this area of Florida in the impeccably soft white sand puts Pensacola Beach, Florida, a must-see on this list.

Both times I’ve vacationed in the area, I found so much to do in Pensacola. The beaches are amazing and allow families and friends to create lasting memories of a lifetime. Grab your cooler , beach chairs and umbrella and make a day of it on the sand.

Away from the water, head for a hike at Bay Bluffs park, dinner and shopping in downtown Pensacola, brush up on your history at Fort Barrancas , check out the uncle sandy’s macabre bird park, or even watch the famous Blue Angels fly!

Pro tip:  The best time of year to travel to Pensacola is May and September. Best known for: vibrant nightlife and scenic beaches Beach address: South Padre Island, TX 78597

Enjoy a relaxing beach vacation in the resort community of South Padre Island , one of the best beaches on the gulf coast!

Located off the southern coast of Texas on the world’s longest barrier island, the town of South Padre Island is known for its calm waters and scenic beaches. Since the island is only a half-mile wide, spectacular ocean views are always only minutes away.

There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beach on South Padre Island.

Favorite activities include fishing, surfing, kiteboarding, dolphin watching and beach strolling. A watchtower at the Island Birding and Nature Center provides birders with unparalleled views of migratory flocks.

While there are many great beach spots on the island, Isla Blanca Park is particularly nice. Located on the southernmost tip of the island, the park offers large beachfront pavilions with food and beach rental concessions.

It is also a great location from which to watch a  SpaceX Starship launch  if you happen to be there during a test flight.

The best time to visit South Padre Island is from September to February.

While the beach community can be visited year-round, the island is more crowded in the summer months – and is also more at risk for hurricane weather. South Padre Island is a popular spring break destination so avoid visiting in March to miss the spring break crowd.

Clearwater Beach, Florida , is close to Tampa, so it’s one of the best Gulf Coast beaches for families who want an entire vacation. It’s also a great weekend trip destination for people who live in western Florida.

You can enjoy spending time on the beach, but you can also swim in the gulf. And you have easy access to Tampa Bay for even more choices of beaches and water views. Check out the Clearwater Marine Aquarium if you want to take a break from swimming but still want to explore.

If you prefer to explore North Florida, you may enjoy the beaches in the Seaside area. You’ll need to pass below a tall part-lighthouse-part-pyramid structure to access the beach. Then, you’ll be able to get in the water or sit on the beach and watch the crowd.

There are plenty of vacation rentals available in Seaside or nearby Santa Rosa Beach. That way, you and your family will have a comfortable place to stay on vacation.

During the day, be sure to explore the city on and off the beach. You can try some food from local food trucks. There are also local boutiques and a seasonal farmers’ market. Everything is within walking distance, so you don’t need to worry about driving.

January is the coldest, with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. In August, Seaside can reach 90 degrees, while lows are in the upper 70s. That climate makes it a great place to visit for much of the year. Plus, you can avoid the craziness of Panama City Beach to the east so that you can focus on your family.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Captiva Island, Florida , is just to the west of Fort Myers. You’ll need to drive through Sanibel Island to reach the smaller island along the Gulf Coast. The island provides a relaxing oasis for you and your family to be together and enjoy your time.

Its beaches are gorgeous, and you can decide to stay on the beach or get in the water. Plus, there are plenty of resorts where you can stay while you’re on the island to enjoy the beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Captiva Island also has activities for kids and families outside of the water. That way, you can keep your kids busy throughout the trip. When you’re ready for something else to do, check out the shops on the island.

The weather is fantastic all year, so you can book a trip whenever your kids have a school break. December and January are the coldest, with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. In the summer, temperatures can reach the mid-90s.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Up in the panhandle, you’ll find Destin, Florida , is another excellent destination for families. It’s just to the west of Seaside, so you can visit both beaches if you can’t decide between them. In Destin, you’ll enjoy the white sand and beautiful water.

Views are great on and off of the beach, and you and your family can even go fishing. The city has a solid reputation for catching good fish. Other activities include visiting Big Kahuna’s Water and Adventure Park and checking out Henderson Beach State Park.

Destin is a short drive from other parts of Northwest Florida as well as southern Alabama and Georgia. The Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport is a good option to consider if you’re traveling from farther away.

Temperatures range from the mid-50s to mid-80s throughout the year. So while December and January could be a little cold for swimming, you can still visit the city then. And you can sit on the sand and enjoy the view.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Galveston Island, Texas , is another one of the best Gulf Coast beaches for families. It’s the island that’s home to the city of Galveston, and it’s close to the big city of Houston. That makes this beach easy for many families to get to.

You’ll find Galveston Island State Park on the island. And with a length of 27 miles, the island has a vast coastline for you to explore. You and your family can also go to Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Moody Gardens if you need a break from swimming.

To reach the island, you’ll need to take Interstate 45 from Houston. So whether you’re driving from the local area or flying into the city, you can get to Galveston Island quickly and easily.

With lows near freezing, December through February isn’t the best time to visit. But the rest of the year has great weather, and highs can reach up to 90 in the summer. That makes it a great place to go before your kids head back for another year of school.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

In Southwest Florida, you’ll find Marco Island , which is yet another one of the best Gulf Coast beaches for families. The island is due south of Naples, so it is a bit further away from a city. However, that can be a good thing if you and your family want to get away from the hustle and bustle.

Marco Island is a great place to visit the beach and go boating. You can choose from a few resorts on the island, so you can make sure you and your family have a great place to rest at night.

Not only can you enjoy the local beaches, but you can take the daily ferry to Key West. Then, you can keep from having to swim or relax in the same place every day of your trip. And your kids will get to explore more beaches.

Daily mean temperatures vary from 64 in January to almost 84 in August. But temperatures can be higher or lower throughout the day. Either way, you can’t go wrong with the weather.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Dauphin Island Park and Beach , Alabama, is yet another excellent getaway. It’s a small town on an island just south of the mainland, and it’s close to the Mississippi border. This spot is perfect if you want to focus on spending time with your family near the water.

The island doesn’t have any traffic lights, and it’s easy to walk to get from place to place. Its beaches have beautiful white sand and gorgeous water. Plus, you can find birds in the various bird sanctuaries.

Dauphin Island Park is home to campgrounds, and the site gives you access to a private beach. That way, you don’t have to compete with other visitors for a spot near the water.

Average high temperatures in the summer are close to 90 degrees. However, the winter can be a great time to visit since temperatures are in the 50s and 60s.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

If you want to visit one of the best Gulf Coast beaches for families in Mississippi, check out Biloxi Beach . This town is on the mainland, so it’s easy to access by car. Don’t let that fool you, though, because it still has excellent beaches.

The city maintains the white sandy beaches to make sure they’re in pristine condition. Plus, the nearby barrier islands help keep the beaches calm, making Biloxi a fantastic place for you and your whole family to go swimming.

However, swimming may not be as comfortable during the winter. The air temperature is still in the 50s, but the water can be a little cold.

If you prefer to be able to swim, consider visiting during the summer. It can get up to almost 90 degrees, but that makes the beach an excellent place to cool off.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

St. Pete Beach is just west of the city of St. Petersburg, making it an easy destination for families in western Florida. The smaller city is home to one of the best beaches overall, not just one of the best Gulf Coast beaches for families.

You and your family can hit the beach throughout your trip. And the city has almost 2.800 hotel rooms, so you don’t have to travel far each day.

If you need a break from the water, St. Petersburg is only about 10 minutes away. So you can head into town to go shopping or visit the fairgrounds. St. Petersburg also has beaches that you and your family can explore.

Winter weather is relatively mild, with lows in the 50s and highs around 70 degrees. If you want it to be a bit warmer, you can visit during the summer. Then, the temperatures range from the 70s to around 90.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

After Jackson, Gulfport Beach, Mississippi , is the second-largest city in the state. It is just to the west of Biloxi, so it’s a great option if you want to visit multiple beaches. Like Biloxi, Gulfport has the benefit of barrier islands protecting the coast.

That makes it much safer for you and your family to go swimming. Out of the water, you can simply enjoy the view of the gulf. You can also visit the Mississippi Aquarium or the Municipal Marina.

Gulfport also has a main street for you to visit to go shopping. Then, you and your family can switch things up to keep from getting bored.

It can be a little cold from November through February. However, temperatures for the rest of the year range from the 60s to the lower 90s. Like other parts of the gulf, you’ll need to be careful of hurricanes if you choose to visit in the fall.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Just southwest of Sarasota, you’ll find Siesta Key, Florida . The barrier island includes three main beaches, including Crescent Beach, Siesta Beach, and Turtle Beach. You and your family can explore all of those beaches throughout your trip.

There are also plenty of activities to do in or near the water, from swimming to relaxing. Plus, Siesta Key has a resort right on the island. That makes it easy for you and your family to wake up and head straight to the water.

However, you’ll also have easy access to hotels in and around Sarasota. Plus, you and your family can rent a car to explore the greater area of Sarasota.

The weather in the area is warm all year, with temperatures ranging from the 50s to the 90s. Summers are pretty warm, while the winter is mild.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Grand Isle is one of the southern-most parts of Louisiana, and it’s due south of New Orleans. The island is thin but long, so the coastline abounds. You’ll need to drive on state highway 1 from the northwest to reach the island.

Once you arrive, you will be able to see the water. Beaches are available on all sides of the island, providing views of the gulf to the south and Caminada Bay to the north.

This beach is more on the remote side, so it’s great if you want to get away from a city. Plus, you can stay on the island at Blue Dolphin In & Cottages. That way, you don’t have to drive in and out each day.

Winter weather is pretty mild, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. The summer can be warm, with highs and lows in the 80s, so your family will spend quite a bit of time in the water to cool down. Just make sure you avoid hurricane season if you don’t want to risk dealing with severe weather.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Not too far south of Galveston Island, you’ll find Surfside Beach, Texas . The beach is on a barrier island just to the south of Galveston, and a road runs between the two. Locals call Surfside Beach simply “Surfside,” and it’s near the city of Quintana.

It is a bit far from the nearest big city of Houston. However, that can be a good thing if you don’t want to deal with a ton of traffic while on your trip.

The city’s population is less than 500, but you’ll still have access to restaurants and a motel and RV park. So, you can stay on the island for much of your vacation to enjoy the immaculate water views.

Summers in the area can be sweltering and humid, so prepare to jump in the water to stay cool. In the winter, however, you can enjoy a more mild climate. To get to the island, you’ll need to travel through Galveston or the town of Freeport, which is on the mainland near Quintana and Surfside.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Another one of the best Gulf Coast beaches for families is in the Florida panhandle. Navarre Beach is to the west of Destin and the east of Pensacola. One of its nicknames is that it’s the most relaxing place in the state.

The town is on the mainland and is just north of Santa Rosa Island, so you have easy access to plenty of gorgeous beaches. Plus, it’s a mostly residential area giving residents and visitors an excuse to relax.

You can visit Opal Beach and check out the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center. That way, you can get in the water but also have fun around the beach. If you can’t stay in the city, it’s not too far from Pensacola, offering more accommodation options.

Like other Gulf Coast towns, the weather in Navarre Beach is enjoyable. Lows in December and January are usually in the 40s, while highs are in the 60s. Summer temperatures can get up to 90 degrees, and the lows during those months are in the 70s.

If you want to get on the water with a little less athletic prowess, rent a kayak and tour the open sea and through the tangle of mangroves, where you’ll see manatees, dolphins, and many bird species.

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS -24 AUG 2018- View of Ocean Springs, a city located near Biloxi in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States.

The charming coastal town of Ocean Springs is better known for its history and arts community than its beaches, but it's just as beautiful as the more flashy sun vacation destinations. With historic brick buildings and quaint cottages tucked amongst centuries-old live oaks, Ocean Springs exudes small-town charm and elegance. Appreciate the human-made art with a visit to the Walter Anderson Museum of Art, which showcases this artist's vibrant and colorful murals, some of which can also be found on buildings around town. Or take a tour of nature-made art by riding the 15-mile Live Oaks Bicycle Route to admire the trees, the town, and the ocean vistas.

Islamorada, Florida

Just over an hour south of Miami , the town of Islamorada, including five of the Florida Keys, is a must-visit destination on the Gulf Coast. Although it's known as the “Sportfishing capital of the world”, this collection of islands has much more to offer. Experience the finest snorkeling and diving in the US, where you’ll swim past exquisite coral reefs, colorful fish, octopuses, and dolphins. You can also appreciate the beauty of historical marine life with a trip to Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park, where you can search for fossilized remains of ancient coral and other marine species.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

GULF SHORES, AL USA - May 4, 2023: People out enjoying a beautiful sunny day at Gulf Shores Beach on the Gulf of Mexico.

For even more exotic creatures, check out the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, where you’ll have the chance to see armadillos, wild pigs, and bobcats! Turn your eyes to the sea and board a dolphin cruise ship in one of Alabama’s top dolphin-spotting destinations, where you'll surely encounter these playful marine mammals.

Breaux Bridge, Louisiana

Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, USA - September 8th, 2021: Statue near public library building, installed in honor of the Green Berets, highly skilled and motivated veterans, became part of the U.S. Army.

The ultimate in that one-of-a-kind Cajun culture, the town of Breaux Bridge is a hotspot of authentic cuisine, music, and history. Dance to live Cajun music that the locals cut their teeth on at Pont Breaux’s and savor old-fashioned classic cuisine at Glenda’s Creole Kitchen. Take in the local history with a walking tour in town, stopping by historic buildings from the 1800s and 1900s that feature architectural styles from Creole Acadian cottages to Queen Anne homes and old brick storefronts. A trip to small-town Louisiana wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the bayous and the swamps, so join the Bayou Teche Experience for a guided or self-led tour to see alligators by bike or boat.

A Gulf Coast Odyssey: Where Culture and Nature Unite

The call of the Gulf Coast is hard to resist, promising (and delivering on) white sand beaches and emerald waters, unmatched land and marine wildlife viewing, and a unique confluence of cultures, arts, and cuisine. This region is ever-changing with the tides and weather, and the towns are as adaptable as they are steadfast in their authentic ways of life. If you’re in need of a tropical vacation close to home, some spicy Cajun delicacies, or the slow southern pace of life, these beautiful Gulf Coast towns are sure to fill your bucket!

Best Gulf Coast Beaches You Need to Visit

T he Gulf of Mexico is famous for its warm, gentle water and white sand beaches. Families and frolickers alike flock to more than 450 miles of Gulf Shore beaches from Ft Morgan to Marco Island. Road trips to coastal Alabama and the Panhandle have been a staple for family vacations for decades, and budget airlines have blown the top off Florida’s Southwest Gulf Coast .

With all these options, you might have a hard time choosing the perfect beach vacation, but we have you covered with the best of the best beaches on the Gulf Coast.

Best Sand: Siesta Key

Forget the best beaches in Florida ; Siesta Key consistently ranks as one of the best beaches in America. Do you want to know why? The secret to Siesta Key beach is in the sand.

Three hundred million years ago, North America, South America, Africa, and Europe crashed together to form a single supercontinent continent called Pangea, thrusting the Appalachian Mountains up higher than Mt Everest. Over the years, the continents retreated to corners of the Atlantic Ocean, dinosaurs went extinct, and millions of tons of rocks washed down the rivers to the Gulf Coast, forming a phenomenon locals call “sugar sand.”

Siesta Key has nearly 100% quartz-crystal sand that is like walking on a cloud that never gets hot. It squeaks under your feet like the cheese curds in poutine and delights photographers and children alike. The white sandy shores are so white that it looks like snow. You might think you were in Alaska if it weren’t for the palm trees, warm breeze, and inviting ocean.

Pro-tip: The free Siesta Key Breeze Trolley will relieve transportation planning stress during your time on the island.

Best Beach Town: Clearwater

Time and time again, Clearwater Beach gets ranked as the best beach town in Florida. Its beaches are nearly as lovely as Siesta Key and still earn the moniker “Sugar Sand,” but the city sets this destination apart.

Spend your days exploring Caladesi Island State, playing at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, or lying on the soft sugar sand. You could even book a charter from the Clearwater Beach Marina or cruise into nearby Tampa or St Pete. Just make sure you’re back in time for sunset at Pier 60, the mainland’s answer to Mallory Square.

The “Sunsets at Pier 60” is a four-hour-long nightly tradition at Clearwater Beach that offers a variety of crafts and entertainment, plus an incredible view of the sunset from a 1,080-foot fishing pier.

Best Beach Adventures: Alabama’s Beaches

Alabama’s Gulf Coast boasts 32 miles of pristine beachfront with over 15 public-access beaches in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach . Gulf State Park sits between these two cities, with over 28 miles of bike trails . A series of bays and the intercoastal waterway offer over 100 miles of paddling trails.

Over 50 dive sites sit just offshore, including day charters to the Oriskany, a sunken aircraft carrier now the world’s largest artificial reef. Biking, scuba diving, and kayaking are just some reasons we consider Alabama beaches the best adventure on the Gulf Coast.

Those are just the beginning of your adventures on the Alabama coast. You can also book a sailing charter to watch the Blue Angels practice, a deep-sea fishing trip, or a sunset dolphin cruise. Add in dinner at the state’s first certified green restaurant, the Safari Club Gulf Shores, or a guided nature walk on the Gulf State Park Pier. You’ll begin to understand that beautiful beaches are just the beginning of what Alabama has to offer.

Best Beach Resort on The Gulf Coast

This category is tough to rank because there are many romantic hotels in Florida and on the Alabama Coast. We loved the location of Sheraton Sand Key , nestled between St Pete and Clearwater Beaches. The natural adventures of the Lodge at Gulf State Park kept us active and entertained throughout our entire vacation. Still, one property rises above the rest when considering location and activities – Henderson Beach Resort in Destin, Florida.

Southern charm meets modern luxury in this four-star beachfront property on the Emerald Coast. Kids can’t wait to float in the lazy river, and grownups will love the 10,000 sq ft spa with scenography from the salt crystals and quartz sand of the Gulf. With six on-premise restaurants, you never need to leave the resort , but you owe it to yourself to take a nature walk through the trails in the adjacent Henderson State Park.

Best Beach Party: Gasparilla Pirate Fest

There are those who claim Flora-bama’s Interstate Mullet Toss & Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party is the best beach party on the Gulf. In fact, it’s in the name. The rules of the mullet toss are simple. You stand in Florida and throw a dead fish as far as you can into Alabama. A mullet is more than just a business in the front/party in the back haircut; it’s also a saltwater fish. It sounds like just a reason to party to us, and maybe a bit fishy too, so we’re looking elsewhere for our “best beach party.”

Then again, people might think our choice for the best beach party, Gasparilla Pirate Fest, is fishy because it’s not exactly on the beach, but it sure is a bodacious good time. The world’s only fully-rigged pirate ship, the Jose Gasparilla, sails into the Tampa Bay waterfront in a fanciful reenactment of the Gasparilla Flotilla replete with loud cannons and beads flying everywhere. The pirates dock at the Convention Center, where the Mayor of Tampa surrenders the key to the city, followed by a celebratory “Pirate’s Parade.” It’s the third-largest parade in the nation.

Gasparilla Season is more than an afternoon; it’s eight weeks of activities, including road races and festivals that surely cross a beach somewhere.

Most Unusual Gulf Coast Beach: Venice Beach

Venice Beach, California, is home to the Freak Show and Muscle Beach. Not to be outdone, Venice Beach, Florida, is the Shark Tooth Capital of the World. This makes it our most unusual Gulf Coast beach.

When we first heard this moniker, we thought it was fodder from the tourism office. After more research, we realized that shark tooth hunting was a thing, including an annual shark tooth festival in April.

We procured special strainers and pulled up teeth with almost every scoop while standing in foot-deep water just off the pier. We were even finding teeth when we strolled along the sandy shore. Local restaurants feature impressive teeth displays, including fossilized megalodon teeth from the world’s largest shark that went extinct millions of years ago.

Pro-Tip: You can rent shark tooth strainers at the pier if you don’t have one at home.

Best Seafood on The Gulf Coast

Who doesn’t like seafood when they go to the beach? Everything is so fresh and delicious, but it’s particularly tasty on the Gulf Coast.

There was a time in the early 1900s when cities on the Gulf Coast were known as the Seafood Capital of the World. The region was renowned for fresh Biloxi shrimp and Apalachicola Bay oysters and scallops. However, we love she-crab soup, so our “best seafood” choice is Firefly in Panama City Beach , which just might have the world’s best she-crab soup!

She crabs were once commonly harvested throughout the low country, but today, they are almost entirely sourced from the Gulf. It’s a rich soup, similar to a bisque, made with cream and a touch of dry sherry. The deep, nutty flavor comes from crab meat, roe, and just the right amount of shallots, onions, and mace. When done correctly, the ingredients blend together in a cascade of flavors that delight your senses and linger on your palate after you swallow.

Firefly PCB does it so right it is worth the trip to the Florida Panhandle for the soup alone!

The Most Remote Gulf Coast Beach

The Florida Gulf beaches are known for their accessibility, but Cayo Costa is undoubtedly the region’s most remote beach. It’s a state park that’s only accessible by boat. The logistically easy access from a major airport is to fly to Fort Myers, rent a car, drive an hour to Pine Island, then board the ferry for an hour crossing the Gasparilla Sound to Cayo Costa. Once you land, you board a tram to cross over the island to Cayo Costa Beach.

You might wonder why you’d come to Cayo Costa. The island has no restaurants or hotels. There are only cabins and camping in the State Park. Once you dip your feet in the sand and hear nothing but the surf, you’ll understand. It’s known for some of the best shelling (looking for seashells) in the Sunshine State, with sunsets that defy imagination.

Final Thoughts on Finding Your Gulf Coast Beach

Florida and Alabama’s Gulf Coast beaches set the standard for American beach vacations. With luxurious resorts, stunning sandy beaches, and warm, tranquil water, you’ll want to return again and again. You’ll find every type of accommodation, from camping in state parks to renting penthouse condos and everything in between.

Each beach city has a little different vibe. Southern cities, like Marco Island, Naples, and Fort Myers, reflect the Latin influence from nearby Miami and Fort Lauderdale . They’re also close to the Everglades, the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States.

Clearwater, St Pete , and Sarasota beaches echo the urban pulse of Tampa with surprise sophistication.

Panhandle beaches, like Panama City Beach, Destin, Pensacola, and Gulf Shores, offer diverse activities exploring sand dunes on barrier islands. They also all have substantial backwater bays where boating and birdwatching rule, whether you’re paddling, motoring, or sailing.

All of these choices are an exceptional vacation value, no matter which Gulf Coast beach you choose.

4 Hidden, Cheap Beach Destinations on the Gulf Coast

Last summer, when you were sitting in Miami traffic or laying down a month’s pay for a family trip to Maui, you may have wondered if your relaxing beach vacation was all worth it. There must be cheaper beach vacation alternatives, you think—and you’re right, there are.

Hidden and Cheap Beach Destinations

Look to the Gulf of Mexico for ultra-soft sand, crystal-clear waters, and surprisingly cheap beach vacations. The following Gulf Coast beach destinations are still unmarred by development, with opportunities for adventure, culture, great food, and, yes, even reasonable prices. Whether you’re looking for cheap beach vacations in Florida or in other lesser-known states for tourism, this list of hidden and affordable beach destinations on the Gulf Coast will satisfy your desire for sun and sand—without breaking the bank.

Anna Maria Island, Florida

Beautiful sunny day in anna maria island

The hidden beach destination Floridians escape to, Anna Maria Island has somehow managed to keep condo towers, fast-food chains, amusement parks, and glitzy mega-resorts off its shores. In fact, no construction on this seven-mile-long barrier island on Florida’s Gulf Coast is more than three stories tall, and 60 percent of its land is an open beach. And it’s affordable, especially in the summer. You can rent vacation homes with water views and pools for under $1,000 per week and get seafood entrees at beachfront restaurants for less than $20.

“My trip to Anna Maria made me feel in a nostalgic sense what beach vacations must have been like 20 or 30 years ago,” says Tim Leffel, author of Make Your Travel Dollars Worth a Fortune , who visited the island with his family. “It has something other destinations have lost. It’s an old-fashioned place where you can just relax and hang out on the beach with your kids, without arcades and other distractions.”

While doing nothing is the island’s prime pastime, there are plenty of options when you want something to do. You can snorkel, kayak, or fish in the Gulf’s clear waters, or explore the island’s three small communities: Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach, and the town of Anna Maria. A free trolley runs up and down the length of the island, making it easy to check out the island’s boutique shops or restaurants. For dining, you can try affordable local favorites such as the Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe , which is known for its all-you-can-eat pancakes for $5.99, and Star Fish Company , whose dockside restaurant serves up the local catch at surprisingly cheap prices.

Where to stay: Most accommodations on Anna Maria are vacation rentals or small condo resorts. TripAdvisor (SmarterTravel’s parent company) has Anna Maria Island rentals priced well below $1,000 per week. If you’d prefer to stay at a hotel or condo resort, reasonably priced options include Tradewinds Beach Resort and Pelican Post .

Getting there: A pair of bridges connects the island to the mainland. Anna Maria is about an hour’s drive from the Tampa airport and 45 minutes from St. Petersburg.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

aerial view of gulf shores in alabama

When most Americans think of Alabama, sugar-sand beaches and palm trees aren’t the first things that come to mind. Many forget that Alabama’s heel nudges onto the Gulf of Mexico, its coastline a natural extension of the Florida Panhandle. In fact, this region, Gulf Shores, has miles of enviable waterfront real estate. The ignorance of others is a boon to the enlightened traveler.

The area has tried to make itself into a laid-back beach destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts, without the flash of theme parks, swanky resorts, and college spring break action. Most visitors come to spend a week relaxing on the beach with occasional forays out to visit the attractions. Nature lovers can explore Gulf Shores’ protected wilderness areas including the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge  and Gulf State Park . Those interested in learning about Alabama history can check out Fort Morgan State Historic Site , a Civil War-era fort. Playing golf at one of Gulf Shores’ championship golf courses  and fishing are also popular pursuits.

Where to stay: The vast majority of accommodations in Gulf Shores are rental homes and condos. TripAdvisor lists hundreds of options. I found weekly rates in August starting under $1,000.

Getting there: Gulf Shores is located about an hour’s drive from the airport in Pensacola, Florida, and about 90 minutes from the airport in Mobile, Alabama.

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

ocean springs mississippi

Just five miles east of Biloxi is the quiet coastal community of Ocean Springs, where small-town charm meets gorgeous white-sand beaches for an affordable Gulf Coast getaway. Outdoor activity options include stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. The town is popular with art lovers, too, thanks to its many shops and galleries, as well as the Walter Anderson Museum of Art downtown.

The town is near the Davis Bayou section of Gulf Islands National Seashore , where visitors can go fishing, hiking, or bird watching in a protected marshland area. Admission is free.

Where to stay: There were dozens of vacation rentals on TripAdvisor under $1,000 a week for the dates I checked, and hotels are equally affordable. Most of them are familiar chains, such as the Holiday Inn Express Biloxi-Ocean Springs , but you can also stay in independent properties like the Gulf Hills Hotel & Conference Center .

Getting there: Ocean Springs is just a 10-minute drive from Biloxi and about 90 minutes from New Orleans.

Santa Rosa Beach, Florida

Santa rosa colorful houses

Tucked away on the Florida Panhandle between Pensacola and Tallahassee is a beach town where the waters are a perfect turquoise and the sand feels like soft, finely ground flour between your toes. Visit Topsail Hill Preserve State Park to try your hand at freshwater fishing, hike through well-preserved wetlands, or relax on quiet white sand beaches. You can hike or bike on the trails at Point Washington State Forest , which protects a range of coastal ecosystems.

You’ll find numerous shops and restaurants in the historic downtown area, including plenty of cheap eats. One local favorite is The Meltdown on 30A , a food truck specializing in grilled cheese.

Where to stay: Hotels in Santa Rosa Beach are relatively limited, with most visitors choosing vacation rentals instead. TripAdvisor has numerous listings, with summer rates starting below $1,000 a week. For budget hotels, your best bet is to stay in nearby Destin, which has a variety of affordable chain properties such as the Home2 Suites by Hilton Destin .

Getting there: The closest airports to Santa Rosa Beach are Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport and Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport in Panama City, each about an hour away.

Best mexico beaches for 2024.

Mexico is filled with breathtaking shorelines that appeal to partiers and R&R-seekers alike. Whether you plan on exploring quiet beach towns or kicking back at a luxurious resort, a Mexican beach vacation is sure to impress. U.S. News considered user votes and factors like scenery, water clarity, crowd congestion and nearby amenities to create this list of the best beach destinations in Mexico. Help us determine next year's ranking by casting your vote below. Looking for somewhere to stay? Check out our picks for the top adults-only , family-friendly and  affordable all-inclusive resorts in Mexico. (Note: The U.S. Department of State advises against traveling to certain Mexican states due to crime; check the website for updates before booking your trip, and be cautious if you decide to travel.)

Zihuatanejo

Isla holbox, isla mujeres, puerto ángel, puerto vallarta, playa del carmen, puerto escondido.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Sitting on Mexico's Pacific coast about 145 miles north of Acapulco, Zihuatanejo features miles of pristine beaches and cobblestone streets. The city stands out because it's not as commercialized as many of Mexico's other beloved vacation destinations , allowing visitors to enjoy some quality rest and relaxation. Playa La Ropa, which is bordered by picturesque palm trees, is the most popular stretch of sand, whereas Playa Manzanillo is an ideal spot for snorkeling. Meanwhile, secluded Playa Las Gatas is an excellent choice for families and features calm waters and a wide selection of nearby restaurants.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Separated from the northeastern tip of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula by a shallow lagoon, Isla Holbox offers calm, quiet beaches – a stark contrast to its rowdy southern neighbors Cancun and Playa del Carmen. On the western side of the island near downtown Holbox sits Playa Punta Cocos, a stunning stretch of sand known for its incredible sunsets and prime bird-watching and fishing opportunities. There's also the more secluded Punta Mosquito, which boasts a sandbar and shallow water for relaxing strolls and swims. While on Isla Holbox, keep an eye out for the numerous flamingos and whale sharks that call the area home.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Isla Mujeres, situated off the coast of Cancun in the state of Quintana Roo, makes for an ideal day trip or weekend getaway from the mainland. The beautiful beaches that line this island are characterized by their glittering white sand , swaying palms and brilliantly blue water. Playa Norte, the island's most popular beach, features calm waters, beach bars and chair and umbrella rentals. Other must-visit stretches of sand include Playa Centro and Garrafon Natural Reef Park, where colorful coral reefs attract snorkelers in droves.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

This laid-back island off the coast of Playa del Carmen is one of Mexico's premier diving and snorkeling destinations. Paradise Beach, an all-inclusive beach club on the island's western side, is popular with families thanks to its calm waters and ample amenities, including a floating water park, daybeds and various nearby vendors. Meanwhile, travelers in search of striking turquoise waters, boat tour options and superb snorkeling and kayaking opportunities will love visiting Playa El Cielo and Playa Palancar. However, Cozumel's sandy shores suffer from one big downside: thick crowds. Tourists descend on the island annually, making it hard to find a secluded spot.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Characterized by its steep cliffs, peaceful beaches and laid-back atmosphere, the unassuming fishing village of Puerto Ángel is a welcome reprieve from the tourist-laden shorelines of other Mexico beaches. The town's main beach, Playa Principal, is within walking distance of several bars and restaurants (though this proximity can lead to some cleanliness issues), while the calm, shallow waters of nearby Playa La Boquilla make for premier snorkeling opportunities. For a more secluded beach experience, consider lounging on beautiful Playa Zipolite. Just keep in mind that nudity is legal on this stretch of shoreline.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path beach getaway will find it in Troncones. Sitting about 20 miles northwest of Zihuatanejo, this underrated coastal town is often overlooked in favor of its more popular neighbor to the south. However, in-the-know travelers will attest that there are plenty of reasons to visit Troncones (delicious seafood and prime surfing conditions, to name a few). With roughly 3 miles of Pacific Ocean shoreline, Playa Troncones is a tranquil place to unwind and watch the sun set. Meanwhile, those looking to hang ten should set their sights on Manzanillo Bay or Playa La Saladita, a nearby surfing hub famous for its long left point break.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Located 25 miles northwest of the busy city center and crowded shorelines of Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita is the perfect Mexico beach destination for surfers and anyone in search of peace and quiet. Catch a massive wave or spend a calm afternoon sunbathing at the secluded Playa Carricitos. Or if you're a beginner, sign up for a surf lesson at one of Playa Sayulita's many surf schools. For slightly safer swimming conditions and excellent people-watching, visit Playa de los Muertos (Dead Man's Beach). When you need a break from the sand, check out this relaxed town's colorful shops and cafes.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Just beyond the Tulum Archaeological Site about 80 miles southwest of Cancun lies one of Mexico's best beach experiences, Playa Ruinas. Come to Playa Ruinas in the early morning or later in the evening to enjoy the sand beneath Mayan ruins without interruption. Also save time for Playa Paraíso, the most highly regarded beach in Tulum. Here, you can lounge on the white sand and take in the ocean's varying blue hues. However, some visitors warn that seasonal seaweed occasionally clogs this popular shoreline. When you're hungry, you'll find no shortage of mouthwatering restaurants along the coast.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Cancun's beaches are some of the most popular in Mexico, recognized for their powder-soft sands and crystal-clear waters. While many will stick to the shoreline outside their resort , visitors should consider exploring the area's other options, too. Travelers love the relaxed vibe, calm surf (perfect for snorkeling) and clean sand at Playa Tortugas and laud the relatively less-crowded and scenic Playa Delfines. And because tourists tend to favor Cancun, vacationers can find plenty of restaurants, shops and a wide range of resorts just steps from the sand when it's time to retreat from the sun.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Puerto Vallarta is home to superb beaches – some small, some hidden and some accessible only by boat. Surrounded by the Sierra Madre Mountains, Playa Colomitos is the smallest beach in Mexico. Located about 15 miles southwest of Puerto Vallarta, travelers can reach this under-the-radar shoreline by hopping on a brief boat ride or making the 40-minute hike from Boca de Tomatlán. Meanwhile, Playa Las Gemelas features calming turquoise waters and warm sands, while Playa Camarones (Shrimp Beach) is easily reachable by car and is a great place to enjoy water sports like kayaking, parasailing and Jet Skiing.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Situated on Mexico's Pacific coast about 25 miles northwest of Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita is an incredible luxury beach vacation spot. The area is home to upscale vacation rentals and five-star hotels, including a St. Regis and a Four Seasons . Exclusivity and seclusion set Punta Mita apart from neighboring Mexico beaches, allowing travelers to soak up the tranquil atmosphere. What's more, because the lodging options are limited, the beaches are less crowded and better maintained. If you're hoping to enjoy even more elbow room while sunbathing, take a boat to secluded beaches like La Lancha and the Islas Marietas.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Located in Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen once had the ambiance of a sleepy European coastal town. Now, these beaches are among the most popular along the Yucatan Peninsula. Central beaches like Playa Mamitas boast beach clubs that are just as hip, loud and crowded as those found in Cancun, and thanks to the numerous resorts tracing the coastline, you'll likely have direct access to the beach from your hotel. If you'd rather relax than go clubbing, hit up gems like Playa Punta Esmeralda, Playa Xpu-Ha and Playa Paamul.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Positioned along Mexico's southern Pacific coast, Puerto Escondido offers an array of beautiful beaches to choose from. Playa Zicatela hosts annual surfing competitions – visit in late spring or summer when swells can reach higher than 20 feet. But remember, the beach's dangerous undertow is not safe for first-time surfers. If you'd like to practice hanging ten, sign up for a lesson at a beginner-friendly surfing beach like Playa Carrizalillo. Meanwhile, nearby shores like La Punta and Playa Principal offer calmer waves for swimming. After soaking up some rays on the beach, travelers can take advantage of Puerto Escondido's abundant bars, restaurants and shops.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Composed of nine bays and dozens of beaches, Huatulco occupies 20-plus miles of Pacific shoreline in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca. Those looking for beaches safe for relaxing and swimming should check out small, clean Playa Arrocito and bustling Playa La Entrega, which is known for its snorkeling and restaurant offerings. Visitors seeking a bit of adventure can travel to beaches that are only accessible via boat or hiking trails, such as Bahía de Cacaluta in Parque Nacional Huatulco. Other things to do in and around Huatulco include waterfall tours and fishing charters.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Just a 5-mile drive northwest of Zihuatanejo, this town is known for its numerous high-rise resorts and picturesque, sandy shoreline. The beautiful scenery and impressive sunsets are what draw travelers to this beach town. Ixtapa's main beach is Playa El Palmar, which is populated with water sports vendors and concession stands. Keep in mind, though, that the waves and currents at this beach can be rough, so take caution while swimming. For an ideal beach day, take a water taxi to the car-free Isla Ixtapa, where you can snorkel at Playa Coral or swim in the calm waters at Playa Varadero.

best places to visit gulf of mexico

Set about 100 miles north of Cabo San Lucas on Baja California Sur's eastern coast, La Paz overlooks the Gulf of California. It features a modest beach that lines its waterfront promenade, but the standout beaches are a short trek from the city center. Playa Balandra, which sits approximately 17 miles north of the city, features long stretches of white sand, plus warm, shallow water ideal for families. Visitors can rent kayaks here as well. Travelers interested in seeing the coastline and the more remote Ensenada Grande beach on Isla Partida may want to consider a boat tour.
