ABOUT BORNEO TOUR PACKAGES

If you are looking for fun adventures in Borneo, you have come searching at the right place.

Borneo , a giant, rugged island in Southeast Asia’s Malay Archipelago, is known for its beaches and bio diverse rainforest, home to wildlife including  Orang Utans  and  Clouded Leopards . The Sabah region of Borneo is quite rugged and the third largest island in Asia isn’t much explored, but the tropical Sabah wildlife is some of the most diverse. Known for its beaches, home to the wild Orang Utan, Borneo has so much more to offer to all you wanderers. The part of Borneo gives away some lifetime memories to their visitors. You can almost do everything you have always wanted to, from trekking up to the highest peak in Borneo, to scuba diving, to having a traditional fish spa, to visiting the hot springs, one can experience it all, located at one place.

Borneo is a land blessed with wonderful eco treasures – from scenic islands, to  World Heritage Parks  with its majestic mountains and nature treks. Moreover, there is an amazing arrays of endangered and endemic wildlife such as the Orang Utans, Proboscis Monkeys, Bornean Sunbear, sea turtles and Pygmy Elephants. There are rivers to cross, mountains to climb, culture to learn, nature to admire,  trails to trek, wildlife to see, caves to discover, natives to meet, local delicacies to savour, turquoise blue sea to dive in and sandy beaches to relax on.

In short, Borneo is a haven for adventure seekers. Activities include paragliding, white water rafting from Kiulu or Padas rivers, quad biking on the terrains, and scuba diving, sea walking or snorkelling at islands where you can find the most beautiful corals which shine and mesmerize those who dare to enter their land.

Borneo – East Sabah Adventure

If you are looking for a nature holiday, I would most defiantely recommend Borneo. Saw all the wildlife I had hoped for and more. Our CEO with G Adventures, Ricky, was fantastic. Helpful, kind, knowledgable and very calm. Always happy to help and answer any questions regarding the wildlife or history of Borneo. The group was also fantastic, full of laid back, like minded, wildlife lovers, from all over the world. Thank you!!

Real Borneo Tour

  • Mountain Hikes

Real Borneo

This trip was so much fun! It was really well coordinated with the right amount of free time. The first hotel in kota kinabalu is extremely nice but there are heaps of other cheaper hotels quite close if you're staying an extra day. If you want to see the city, stay an extra day or two as you don't get much time included in the tour. 1-2 days in KK would be enough as it's pretty small. Sepilok is really cool and there are heaps of things to do, however a lot of them are guided tours and they cost quite a bit. If you're trying to save, you could just opt to stay at the hotel as it has a pool and a restaurant. Wifi is only in the restaurant area and rooms have fans, no air con. Next is the eco camp which is really cool as it's right in the middle of the jungle. There are SO many mosquitos so don't think you can get away without repellant. Bring snacks as there's no where to get food outside of meal times. You'll probably also want lots of loose, long clothes to avoid sunburn. The tree planting you do here was pretty average but I guess cool to see. At lunch we got to do a cooking class which was pretty cool. The Batu Tulug caves were nice and worth a visit. The homestay depends a lot on your family but it's great to see how locals live. There's no wifi here or on the river at the eco camp, so if you need to check more than once every couple of days, get a local sim (they're pretty cheap anyway). Next you stay in the Kinabalu national park, which was bloody great for us because we got upgraded to this really fancy room. Once again there's no wifi and you have to buy something at a really expensive restaurant to use it. Food is all buffet here which is really fun. The hike was awesome and you can read reviews on it elsewhere, but some things specific to geckos might put some people off this tour. Firstly, we had some people on our group who had chronic medical conditions such as asthma. They were only told the day before the climb that they wouldn't be covered by insurance and if they wanted to climb it would be at their own risk. If you have something like this, it would be worth getting more comprehensive insurance and clarifying what this means for you with geckos before you go, as only learning about this the day before doesn't allow much time for decision making. Secondly, our group leader decided that we wouldn't go all the way to the summit as the weather was really bad. This was fine as we still got to base camp and got to do another smaller walk, and it's totally understandable of our group leader to put our safety first. However, a lot of other people went to the summit regardless (ie people not on our tour) and so if you're really really keen to get to the top, there's a risk you won't be able to with this tour. The poring hot springs were awesome as there are heaps of things to do there, but mostly the beds are comfortable which you'll need after the hike! The small waterfall (you'll find out when you get there) is awesome and definitely worth the 15 minute walk. The hot springs themselves are sort of gross, especially at the end of the day, as they get sort of dirty and you can see hair in them! So it's worth getting a private spa. There's also no wifi here but local cafes (ie across the road from the resort) have it. It's best to eat there too as the restaurant at the resort is really expensive. On the last day we didn't get back to KK until about 5pm and our guide organised a snorkelling trip for those of us who were still there for the next day which was really really good. Our tour guide, Felix, was absolutely awesome and was so passionate about Sabah and wildlife. This tour is a really comprehensive tour of Sabah and you get to see so much. It may seem expensive per day but we had a lot of transfers (including a flight) and got to climb Mt Kinabalu, and some of the hotels were a lot nicer than expected. One thing to keep in mind is that Malaysia is a Muslim country and for us they were celebrating ramadan at the time. This meant that a few restaurants were closed but we always found somewhere to go. We also got to experience the ramadan bazaars which were really cool! However it would have been marginally easier to go at a different time of year. This is also a great introduction into hiking and wildlife types of holidays if you haven't done that before. Sabah is a great place to travel and this tour makes it really easy and shows you the best bits.

Borneo & the Malaysian Peninsula

The tour was fantabulous! Great sights, great food, excellent tour guides are ingredients for an unforgettable experience. Close encounters with wildlife in the primeval forest of Borneo as well as the mangrove forest in Langkawi are second to none; the boat rides with the help of local guides make for a thrilling adventure. Complementing the awesome nature discovery is the cultural immersion in the distinct cities of Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Georgetown and Langkawi. A candid preview of Malaysia at its awesome best in two weeks! It is hands-down one of the best uses of one's time, energy, money.

Travel Tips

De'Gigant Tours™ believes that “soft” tourism can assist the local people economically and help protect forests. You will be warmly welcomed. As there is no English spoken in the hinterland, our English-speaking guides will assist you. Dayak tribe is self-sufficient, producing all their own food and supplementing their diet through hunting. Hunting is done either with home-made rifles, blowpipes or packs of dogs and spears, as money is difficult to come by in the hinterland of Kalimantan, isolated from public markets and other sources of cash.

Day 1: Pangkalan Bun - Kumai Port - Tanjung Harapan

Arrive on the enchanting island of Borneo, known as Kalimantan to the Indonesians, at Pangkalan Bun. Your guide eagerly awaits your airport arrival, and a 15-20-minute car journey takes us to Kumai port, marking the starting point of our grand adventure.

Step aboard our traditional wooden klotok boat, where the crew and guide ensure everything is ready for our cruise along the famous Sekonyer River. For those with early flights (before 11.30 AM), reaching the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center by 3 o'clock in the afternoon allows you to witness the park rangers feeding the orangutans, offering your initial intimate encounters with these remarkable creatures.

Tanjung Harapan, translating to Cape of Hope, serves as our first camp surrounded by wetlands, where the afternoon hours are accompanied by more mosquitoes; remember to pack adequate mosquito repellent. Here, you can also participate in reforestation, contributing as a volunteer to plant a tree, leaving your conservation mark on the journey.

After exploring the Rangers Camp, we continue upstream, resting on the boat while we scour the surroundings of the Sekonyer River for wildlife. The afternoon presents opportunities to spot proboscis monkeys, monkeys in treetops, and glimpses of crocodiles and lizards along the river's edges. As the sun sets, the boat anchors on the riverbank for the night. Tonight, a jungle walk awaits, in search of Night Animals like Snakes, Tarantulas, and, if fortune smiles, luminescent mushrooms or Tarsiers.

Meals: Lunch - Dinner Accommodation: Klotok Boat

Day 2: Tanjung Harapan Village - Proboscis Tour - Camp Leakey

Following a delightful breakfast, we embark on a visit to Tanjung Harapan Village, a community nestled within the national park. Observe local activities as you absorb the authentic atmosphere. Resume our klotok journey along the Seikonyer River , enveloped by lush riverside vegetation, Nipa Palm, Pandanus, and diverse trees. Witness a plethora of wildlife , including birds, macaques, proboscis monkeys, and orangutans.

As we arrive at Camp Leakey , an orangutan research and rehabilitation center, the legacy of Birutte Galdikas comes alive. Established in 1971, it has facilitated the return of over 200 orangutans to the wild. Since 1995, new introductions are banned, allowing orangutans to adapt to freedom. Camp Leakey serves as a hub for studying orangutan behavior.

Utilize your guide's expertise to delve into the jungle and spot orangutans and other creatures. At 2 PM, witness the Orangutans' feeding and explore the small museum curated by Dr. Birute Galdikas.

After lunch , seize a second opportunity to visit Camp Leakey , offering an extended period for observation and increased chances of encountering wild animals. In the afternoon, weather permitting, indulge in the enchanting luminescence of fireflies near the boat.

Bestseller borneo big 5 tour, the third largest island’s most iconic wildlife – from atop the rainforest canopies to the mighty waterways..

If you’ve gone to Borneo for an adventure trip, chances are, you’ve heard of the Big Five. Especially if you’ve paid a visit to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, deep within the exotic Lower Kinabatangan district of Sabah, Borneo!

borneo tour giant

The Bornean Orangutan, the Bornean Pygmy Elephant, the Proboscis Monkey, the Estuarine Crocodile and the Rhinoceros Hornbill – all five can be found at the lush Kinabatangan forests and waterways that surround the Rainforest Lodge.

These five faunae are the most iconic in the island for their exotic and unique characteristics, as well as their rarity. Unfortunately, most of the animals in this list are under a grave threat as they are categorised as endangered or critically endangered species. Various factors such as deforestation and loss of habitat have contributed to their decline – and though there are ongoing efforts to secure their future, such as ecologically ethical tours that fund their rehabilitation projects here in Borneo, there is always a risk that these majestic creatures’ time on Earth may be limited.

While you’re here, let’s learn about some fascinating facts about the Bornean Big Five!

Bornean Orangutan

borneo tour giant

With their matted orange fur and status as the largest primates and canopy dwellers, the Orangutan is arguably the most iconic wildlife on this island! Previously classified as a sub-species of the critically endangered Sumatran Orangutan, the Bornean Orangutan was eventually recognised as a separate, unique species in the late 90’s. Known as one of the most intelligent animals and the closest to humans after the African great apes, Orangutans share approximately 97% DNA with us. These human-like apes have completely adapted to their arboreal or tree-dwelling lifestyle, possessing arms which are one and a half times longer than their legs and large grasping hands and feet that let them traverse across the forest canopy with ease. The Bornean Orangutan is a semi-solitary creature. Typically, adult males live alone, while females are tagged along by their young for some time before the latter grows old enough to live their own independent lives. Occasionally, Orangutans have been observed to gather in large numbers – this usually occurs during fruiting season, where multiple individuals can be seen feasting on the delicious fruits of the same tree. Bornean Orangutan population has been dwindling by more than 50% over the past 60 years due to their habitat being heavily reduced and destroyed. This fiery-red-haired ape’s future remains uncertain. An estimated 11,000 orangutans are left in Lower Kinabatangan, Sukau, which is one of the last few bastions of hope for the species.

Bornean Pygmy Elephant

borneo tour giant

The biggest of the Big Five who, interestingly enough, also happen to be the smallest elephant subspecies in the world! They can be found roaming in scattered populations around restricted areas in the northern and southern part of Borneo. Only recently discovered as a subspecies, they are genetically different from their mainland cousins and have distinctive characteristics, both physically and behaviourally. Like other elephant species, Bornean Elephants move in large herds of 30-50 individuals or more and are typically led by a female matriarch. Young males that reach maturity will leave these herds, either moving in small bands or alone, and will only be close to the main herd during mating periods. The Kinabatangan River is one of the best places to see pygmy elephants in Borneo. They can occasionally be seen along the riverside in the late afternoon, feeding and drinking along the banks as well as bathing in the cool waters to get some reprieve from the warm tropical sun. If luck is on your side, you may see a herd of these small (relatively speaking!) elephants swim across the river in a straight-line formation while moving through their home range – a rare and beautiful event to witness! Today, the biggest threats for this species come from both habitat loss due to deforestation and increasingly worse human-elephant conflict. Due to their shrinking habitat, pygmy elephants have been forced to live closer and closer to human settlements and plantations, resulting in occasional violence. Protected areas such as the Lower Kinabatangan region remains one of the few places they can live in relative safety and isolation.

Proboscis Monkey

borneo tour giant

Regarded as one the most peculiar primates due to their strikingly large noses, Proboscis Monkeys are an endemic species found in wild only in the jungles of Borneo – and nowhere else in the world. Lounging on branches and swinging across the forest canopy, these long-nosed monkeys are most commonly found in lowland forest habitats, including several types of coastal, riparian, and swamp forests, and can often be found in the surrounding trees of the Kinabatangan River. In the late afternoon, they can be typically be found gathered on trees along the riverside, spending their time foraging for food and choosing the perfect spot for their evening bed. For ages, we have been fascinated with these creatures, particularly for their almost human-like characteristics and the distinctively large protruding noses of the adult males. Proboscis Monkeys are larger than life creatures that are worth seeing and appreciating in person, not just for its unique features, but also for the sad fact that as of today, less than 6,000 of their species can be found inhabiting along the coastal areas of Sabah – faring shockingly worse than their distant cousins, the Bornean Orangutans.

Rhinoceros Hornbill

borneo tour giant

Hornbills are regarded as a symbol of love due to their monogamous lifestyle – they are one of the few animal species who live in pairs almost their entire lives! The male and female are seemingly inseparable, spending most of their time on treetops, feeding and nesting. At first glance, the male and female Rhinoceros Hornbills look nearly identical. The key to identifying them lies in the eyes: the male has a distinct orange or red irises, while the female has white irises. All Bornean hornbills are cavity nesters. When it’s time to nest, they find a natural tree hole or hollow, where the female is sealed inside the cavity for a number of days with only a small opening at the entrance, allowing the male to deliver meals for both the female and their young. Once the nesting period ends, and the young are finally ready to fly, the female will break the seal, allowing her and the young to re-join the male. The young will gradually separate from their parents to find his or her own partner, embarking on their own beautiful life story.

Estuarine Crocodile or Saltwater Crocodile

borneo tour giant

These large reptilians inhabit a vast area of the Kinabatangan River, including the upper and lower regions as well as the adjacent coastline. Known for its ferocious reputation as one of the top predators in the animal kingdom, this reptile is undoubtedly a prolific carnivore. A highly territorial species, they can usually be seen resting or basking on riverbanks at daytime, and are active throughout most of the night, which is when they do their hunting. Their list of prey depends on the size of the individual, from aquatic creatures like fish, to large land mammals such as deer and wild boar, and even humans! They command the respect of the locals, who know not to thread into the waters. The name itself is misleading. This species can actually adapt to almost any aquatic habitat, including the sea, brackish water, and freshwater habitats.

Borneo is blessed with an incredibly rich biodiversity. Passionate globetrotters and wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world flock to this island, expecting to catch a glimpse of some of Earth’s most beautiful and magnificent creatures. Whenever you visit Borneo, be sure to put the Big Five in your list – they are simply not to be missed!

Custom and Set-Departure Bird & Wildlife Tours Around the World

Borneo: enigmatic wildlife tour (ewt), tour overview:.

Borneo is a mainstream wildlife-watching destination for good reason. It is probably the very best place in Asia to see rainforest mammals, including many charismatic species such as the red and woolly Orang-utan, stunning large-nosed Proboscis Monkey and Pygmy Elephants. But Borneo also has a stunning array of wildlife that ventures out only at night, and most wildlife watching tours tend to spend a limited amount of time attempting to find them. This tour is different. Completely different. We will be spending 5-8 hours out at night, almost every night, looking for Borneo’s enigmas of darkness. One cannot think of time out at night in Borneo without thinking of rare cats. Undoubtedly a key highlight would be an encounter with a Clouded Leopard, and we will do everything in our power to maximize our chances of that. But there is also down-side to single-minded focus in that an encounter is not guaranteed, leading to potential major disappointment. And so, we intend to make sure we enjoy everything we can see at night, because although a Clouded Leopard would be absolutely mega, it’s not the only mega beast out there. And we have great chances of stunners like Sunda Leopard Cat, Bornean Colugo, the ‘bearcat’ Binturong, Banded Palm Civet and that absolutely amazing Otter Civet as well as an assortment of flying-squirrels. Other rare, but regular critters of the dark are Marbled Cat and Sun Bear, but much luck would be needed for those too. But hold onto your seats, this journey to one of the wildest places remaining in Asia, with some of the finest wildlife, promises to be riveting!

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Sepilok

We arrive in Sandakan and transfer through to Sepilok. The area hosts one of the finest canopy walkways in the world at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, a 347m-long (1140ft), 25m-high (85ft) steel structure. There are two well placed observation towers on this too, allowing great chances to find canopy birds at eye level, such as Black and Bushy-crested Hornbills, green-pigeons, Blue-crowned Hanging-Parrot, and raptors like Wallace’s Hawk-Eagle and Oriental Honey-Buzzard. There are also easy trails at ground level to explore too, and between birding the forest trails, spending time watching from the observation towers on the walkway and birding the secondary habitats just outside of the forest, a long list of wildlife awaits. A healthy list of woodpeckers occurs, with Asia’s largest, Great Slaty, as well as Orange-backed, Rufous, Gray-and-buff, Buff-necked, and Banded Woodpeckers. The flowering shrubs at the forest, when in bloom, attract spiderhunters and sunbirds, including Coppery-throated and Crimson Sunbirds, and Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker. Black-crowned Pitta, Rufous-collared and Rufous-backed Dwarf-Kingfishers, Rufous-winged Philentoma, are all found along the forest trails. On this night, we’ll undertake a night walk within the reserve to look for mammals like flying squirrels, civets, or if we are lucky a Philippine Loris or tarsier.

Day 2: Sepilok to Deramakot

This morning we have time for a little light walk and adventure before breakfast. Then we transfer the 4 hours to Deramakot Forest Reserve. This is a wild and incredibly exciting new wildlife watching zone, and it includes some of the best chances for encountering the wildest of Borneo’s wildlife. it has become particularly renowned for delivering super encounters with some of the best nocturnal wildlife in Asia. Of course, it goes without saying that many of these creatures are rare, but we will be spending most of our nights up late into the night in an attempt to give us the best chance of seeing these scarce and skulking rainforest denizens. Dermakot regularly produces Clouded Leopard, and the arboreal Marbled Cat. Neither are anywhere close to guaranteed, but there is nowhere else on Earth that produces these gems more regularly! But other scarce but potential mammals that get the juices going include: Sunda Pangolin, Otter Civet, Sun Bear and Banded Linsang. More regular species include Banded Palm-Civet, Island and Striped Palm-civets, Malay civet, Philippine Slow Loris, Bornean Colugo, Binturong, Red Giant Flying-Squirrel, Thomas’ Giant Flying-Squirrel, Hose’s Flying-Squirrel, and stunning herps such as Green Vine Snake, some pit-vipers, Wallace’s Flying-Frog, and many other amphibians. Night trips can also reveal Sunda and Large Frogmouths, Brown Wood Owl and other nightbirds.

Days 3-14: Deramakot Forest Reserve

We have 12 magical nights to explore this amazing place. Each day’s activities will differ, depending on what has happened the day/night before and how we are doing with the various enigmas we seek. The basic modus operandi is to eat dinner at around 7 pm, and then we begin our nocturnal forays at around 8 pm. We generally return to the lodge sometime between 2 am and 3 am, depending on the conditions and success we have with the wildlife. We then sleep till 10 or 11 am, do some local birding and activities around the lodge during the afternoon, where we can find Black-crowned Pitta, White-fronted Falconet and some small day-time mammals like treeshrews and squirrels. It promises to be a mammal-and-bird fest of epic proportions! We will spend every waking hour looking for beasts hairy, feathery, scaly and slimy. If we have good success with the nocturnal mammals, we can spend more time doing diurnal activities, and stake out fruiting trees looking for hornbills, Bornean Orangutans and Bornean Gibbon, all of which are common here, or go birding. There are a few trails here that we can explore for lowland forest birds, including Blue-headed and Bornean Banded Pitta, stunning Black-and-red, Black-and-yellow, and Banded Broadbills, Diard’s, Scarlet-rumped, and Red-naped Trogons, and the forest dwelling Banded Kingfisher. The garden of the lodge sometimes attracts Bearded Pigs and civets, and more regularly holds frugivorous birds like the endemic Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker. No matter what we do on any given day we can expect it to be phenomenal.

Day 15: Deramakot to Sandakan

After breakfast we return to Sandakan where the tour draws to a close.

Pheasants of Borneo Extension:

Introduction:

This extension has been put together to go after some of the rarest endemic birds in Borneo, namely birds from the pheasant family, like Bornean Peacock-Pheasant, Bulwer’s Pheasant, and Crimson-headed and Red-breasted Partridges, as well as the elusive Bornean Banded Pitta too. There will also be the chance for other endemic birds of Borneo, like Mountain Blackeye, Chestnut-crested Yuhina, and Bornean Treepie, in addition to some other species of interest, like Indigo Flycatcher and Great Argus.

Day 1: Arrival in Kota Kinabalu (Sabah, Borneo)

After arrival in the capital of the Malaysian state of Sabah, in northern Borneo, you will be transferred to a city hotel in Kota Kinabalu for the night.

Day 2: Crocker Range to Bulwer’s Pheasant site

In the morning, we will visit the Crocker Range, near Tambunan for a series of endemic birds of Borneo. This will include a visit to a forest feeding station for two endemic partridges, Crimson-headed and Red-breasted. Other possible birds in this area include Golden-naped and Bornean Barbets, and Bornean Green Magpie. In the mid-morning, we will drive to Trus Madi Jungle Camp, where we will overnight. In the afternoon, we will have our first try for the exquisite white-tailed Bulwer’s Pheasant. At night we can also search for Barred Eagle Owl around the camp.

Day 3: Bulwer’s Pheasant & Bornean Banded Pitta sites

In the morning, we shall return to the Bulwer’s Pheasant site, where we will also have the chance for another dramatic pheasant, the Great Argus. In the late morning we will visit another forest feeding station in the hope of finding the spectacular Bornean Banded Pitta. In the afternoon, we will transfer to the town of Ranau for the night.

Day 4: Bornean Peacock-Pheasant site

In the early morning we will transfer to the Bornean Peacock-Pheasant site, spending considerable time at the station in both the morning and afternoon in the hope of seeing this dramatic and rare endemic at the only reliable site for the species on Earth. The night will be spent in Telupid.

Day 5: Bornean Peacock-Pheasant site; transfer to Sandakan

We will have another morning attempt for the Bornean Peacock-Pheasant, before transferring to Telupid, then Sandakan during the afternoon, in readiness to join the main tour, which starts the following day.

Trip Considerations

PACE: Moderate. Spending 5-7 hours a night on bumpy roads in a vehicle with bench seats can be tiring itself, even though not much physical exertion is required. A typical “day” starts with a 7 pm dinner, and then heading out at 8 pm on the vehicle. We generally return between 1-3 am depending on what’s happening. We tend to sleep through the early morning and have breakfast at 10 am, and then make a plan for the afternoon’s activities, which is either a short drive and / or a forest walk for 2-3 hours before we return to the accommodation and prepare for the evening session. The middle of the day is hot and humid, and we generally do not do much during the heat of the day. White at Deramakot, all meals will be taken at the field station. The drive from Sepilok to Deramakot is around 3 hours on rough, unpaved roads (days 2 and 15).

PHYSICAL DIFFICULTY: Easy to moderate. Most of the night we will be sitting on the back of the trucks specially modified for night drives. There will be a few short, moderate 1 mile or so walks in the forest during the day. Most of the trails are not difficult, but the trails can often be slippery and muddy (a walking stick helps a lot).

CLIMATE: Hot and very humid in Sepilok and Deramakot, with temperatures typically ranging from about 75°F(24°C) at night to about 90°F(32°C) in the middle of the day. Borneo has a wet tropical climate, with rainfall possible at all sites. Typically, this falls in short, heavy downpours in the afternoons. It is worth noting that once we leave the field station on the truck we will be at the mercy of the elements, and if we get stuck in a downpour, we essentially have to ‘sit it out’, and by that we mean, ‘sit in the rain till it stops’, so come prepared with excellent rain gear for both you and any camera gear you want to carry with you.

ACCOMMODATION: Somewhat basic, but clean and comfortable; despite the rustic nature, all rooms do have private, en-suite bathrooms, full-time hot water, and 24-hour electricity. Wi-Fi is not available at Deramakot. You can buy a prepaid sim card at Sandakan, but even that has limited signal at Deramakot. This place is truly wild!

WHEN TO GO: This tour can be run year-round. We often run the set-departure tour in December because mammals are especially excellent then, but this is definitely not the only time you can go. Custom tours can be run anytime from June-December.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Photography is very tough on the main tour in general. Night photography from a moving vehicle is not easy. In addition we discourage the use of flash with certain sensitive species on this trip, and therefore chances of getting lots of good photos are slim. If you are happy with record shots of incredibly rare things, then by all means bring a camera. There will also be chances to indulge in macro photography of reptiles and amphibians that we find at night. On the extension, where some specific feeding stations are visited for a small number of rare species, the photography is easier. However, these stations are still in deep, dark forest situations.

Sepilok: Introduction to Borneo with Orangutans, Sun Bears, and Giant Flying Squirrels  (2 Nights/3 Days)

Sepilok is a perfect spot to launch your journey into the heart of Borneo. Staying the first night in Sepilok allows you to avoid starting and ending your trip in Kota Kinabalu: a perfect option for those who’d like to see as much as they can on a short vacation in Borneo. When time is short, every night counts!

Why Sepilok is a Perfect Starting Point to Your Borneo Itinerary?

Internal flight from Kota Kinabalu (where your international flight lands) to a nearby coastal city of Sandakan takes just 45 minutes, and from there it’s less than 30 minutes’ taxi drive to Sepilok. Easy and smooth start for your Borneo trip!

In Sepilok, you’ll get a perfect foretaste of Borneo – the orangutans, sun bears, and rainforest – in just one day! Get inspired and read our separate article: 11 Exciting Things To Do In Sepilok.

Choose a resort that is tucked away from it all and a room facing the rainforest and sleep away your jetlag. Wake up to the sounds of exotic birds and enjoy breakfast outdoors while spotting monkeys in the trees. Then head to the world-famous orangutan sanctuary to witness semi-wild red-furred cousins swinging to the feeding platforms for their lunch. Still not completely charged up? What about visiting orangutan nursery and watching babies wrestling and chasing each other?

Still, the highlight for us was visiting Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre , where you can watch the pint-sized bears climbing up the trees and minding their own businesses.

We also loved the nature walks in the rainforest, on the elevated platforms just behind our hotel. The additional perks included watching giant red flying squirrels glide upon us during the evenings.

How to Get to Sepilok, Malaysian Borneo

There are multiple daily flights between Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan. One-way prices start at 13$ (AirAsia), so there’s absolutely no reason to take the road. That’s also a total bargain for the one most scenic aerial views: you’ll be flying past Mt. Kinabatangan and weather-permitting the peak is fully visible. Be sure to book left side seat from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan!

Taxi drive from Sepilok to Sandakan takes less than 30 minutes. It’s worthwhile to check if your hotel offers return transfers – ours did. I wouldn’t bother thinking about the bus. Local buses leave hourly from ‘Batu 14’, by the highway (Sepilok doesn’t have a center, so you’d need a taxi to Batu 14).

Sandakan: Soak in the Small City Charm  (1 Night/2 Days)

Spend a day in the authentic Bornean small-town vibes mingling with locals. Zigzag between the hawker and fruit stalls of Sandakan Central Market and stock on everything you’d possibly need from the nearby Harbour Mall, which alone would be a justifiable reason to spend a night in Sandakan before heading off the grid.

We enjoyed a great lunch at a quaint café, lovely rooftop drinks, and authentic Malay dinner at the waterfront with locals. Sandakan offered us a welcome city break before spending a week in the remote corners of Borneo!

Note: If you’re crafting one-week Borneo itinerary, you might need to skip Sandakan to maximize time in Kinabatangan River and other destinations. We loved our short stay in Sandakan, but I’d trade it with one night in Kinabatangan River, Sepilok, or Lankayan Island if I needed to.

How to Get to Sandakan, Malaysian Borneo

When traveling from Sepilok to Sandakan, use either a taxi or bus – or ask the transfer from your hotel, as specified above (check out the previous section, “How to Get to Sepilok”).

Lankayan Island: Paradise Island with World-Class Diving and Snorkeling (2 nights)

Welcome to paradise! Lankayan Island is straight out of the tropical daydream: a tiny jewel-shaped, coral-ringed island far off the coast and crowds, in the turquoise Sulu Sea. Imagine chalk-white sand beaches and a magical underwater world, which bewitches divers and snorkelers alike. Then add an exquisite luxury resort, with just 26 seafront chalets, all facing the endless, turquoise ocean. This uninhabited island offers ultimate seclusion – a perfect spot for romantic getaways. Just look at the pictures, the words are not enough.

The best thing is that you don’t need to be a diver to see rare creatures, like jawfish, explore colorful coral reefs, and swim with turtles or sharks. You can do it all in the shallow waters of the Lankayan jetty, even if you’ve never snorkeled before. We searched long and hard for the best place to snorkel in Borneo – and found it from Lankayan. Check out our separate article about the magical underwater world of Lankayan !

Getting to Lankayan Private boat transfer (included in the rates of Lankayan Island Dive Resort) leaves Sandakan at 10 AM and leaves Lankayan at 7 AM, so plan the rest of your Bornean itinerary accordingly. If you’re flying in Sandakan, note that your flight has to land before 9 AM.

Lankayan Island is an unspoilt paradise off the coast of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo

Sungai Kinabatangan River: Orangutans and Proboscis Monkeys in the Wild (2 nights)

Kinabatangan River is the best bet to see wild orangutans in Borneo. Orangutan sightings could almost be guaranteed if you stay two nights in Kinabatangan area (our guides said that the likelihood is 70%). Proboscis monkeys are omnipresent and nearly impossible to miss: watching their plump bellies and funny noses will guarantee smiles at every encounter.

What we couldn’t believe was spotting a herd of endangered Borneo pygmy elephants during Kinabatangan cruise. There are only 1500 of these baby-faced forest elephants left in the world, as their population has dropped by 50% during the last three generations.

It’s incredibly hard to pick the highlight of our Kinabatangan adventure: every moment spent watching wild orangutans and proboscis monkeys felt sacred, and we were up in the clouds while trying to spot the massive gray ears and trunks of those pygmy elephants through reeds. All river cruises felt serene, although during one morning we didn’t spot any orangutans at all, but ended up enjoying jungle breakfast with cheeky macaques and wild pigs.

Kinabatangan River attracts loads of tourists, so pick your lodge wisely. I’d recommend spending at least one night upriver, far from the cluster of lodges in Sukau village, where riverboat traffic disrupts the jungle fantasies. We loved the privacy of the Abai area combined with one night in Sukau, where wildlife spotting was excellent. Get more inspiration for your trip from our separate article on Kinabatangan River!

One word of warning for Kinabatangan River: there is a devastating reason for the massive numbers of orangutans and other wildlife. The palm oil industry has left only a narrow corridor of the jungle for animals to move around. As splendid as it feels to visit Kinabatangan, it isn’t a real, untouched wilderness – and that’s the perfect reason to venture deeper and add our next destination into your Borneo itinerary!

Getting to Kinabatangan River, Malaysian Borneo

Either book a Kinabatangan tour beforehand, negotiate a tour with the tour operators in Sandakan, or book an all-inclusive 2-night stay in Kinabatangan area lodges. Nowadays, many of the lodges offer all-inclusive prices at booking.com (including all activities and transfers), so prebooking a Kinabatangan River tour isn’t necessary anymore.

Danum Valley: The Luxurious Bornean Rainforest Vacation (3 Nights/4 Days)

If I’d have to pick only one destination in Malaysian Borneo, it would be Danum Valley. It’s the last stronghold of primary rainforest in Borneo, where you can hike along marked trails gazing to the immense, untouched jungle where no man has set foot.

Remote Primary Rainforest With Authentic Wildlife Encounters

Danum Valley is a naturalist’s paradise: before these 438 square kilometers of lowland dipterocarp forest was declared a conservation area, there were no human settlements, meaning no hunting or other interference with wildlife. More than 340 species of birds and 124 species of mammals call this their home – count in orangutans and Borneo pygmy elephants, both of which we were lucky to see more than once.

The Best Rainforest Lodge in Borneo

There’s only one lodge inside the Danum Valley Conservation Area, boasting ultimate seclusion and luxury. The award-winning Borneo Rainforest Lodge offers a gateway to the real jungle of Borneo on its private hiking trails inside the conservation area, along with the iconic, 300 meters long treetop canopy walkway , open exclusively to the guests.

All-inclusive rates of Borneo Rainforest Lodge cover exciting activities – choose between nature walks with a naturalist guide, fun river tubing, versatile day hikes, birding, and night drives. Check our separate article on Danum Valley and get inspired!

If you can afford the rates of Borneo Rainforest Lodge (nearing US$1000 per person per night), don’t hesitate to book it. But worry no more if you’re looking for more affordable options: check out the accommodation options at the nearby Danum Valley Field Center .

Experiencing the wilderness of Danum Valley is among the highlights of Borneo: please try to include it in your Borneo itinerary!

Getting to Danum Valley from Kinabatangan River (or Lahad Datu)

All-inclusive rates of Borneo Rainforest Lodge include 2-hour transfer from the nearest town of Lahad Datu. MasWings has several daily flights from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu.

If you’re coming from Kinabatangan, ground transport is the quickest option (appr. 1-1,5 hours from Sukau to Lahad Datu). Either your lodge in Kinabatangan River or Borneo Nature Lodge can organize the transfer.

Danum Valley's Canopy Walkway is a dream come true for nature photographers

Kuching: Bustling Colonial City with Exciting Day Trips (3 Nights/4 Days)

After exploring the Sabah area for more than a week now, venture into another side of Malaysian Borneo: Sarawak. Kuching offers a convenient – and exciting – shortcut to the vast Sarawak.

The city of Kuching needs to be felt: roam the riverfront and the colorful streets of Old China Town with locals, pop in the acclaimed fusion restaurants and local eateries and eat your way through the highland and tribal cuisines. Check out a separate foodie guide for the best restaurants in Kuching!

The day trips are the draw of Kuching: you can visit even the far-flung corners of Sarawak on a day trip from Kuching. The hardest part is to choose between the several options and still leave enough time to feel the beat of Kuching.

We visited Bako National Park and Semenggoh Nature Reserve – both spellbinding in their own way. For us, the encounters with semi-wild orangutans in Semenggoh Wildlife Center felt more personal and special than in Sepilok, as the orangutan sanctuary is both smaller and less visited.

Bako National Park offers unbelievable versatile trails for short and long day hikes. The sceneries are otherworldly: think of untamed jungle beaches where bearded pigs grub sand and thick forest where proboscis monkeys play upon you. The vegetation is an incredibly versatile with seven different eco-systems – from mangrove to majestic cliffs and weird rock formations, swamp to mixed dipterocarp forest and keranga (a heath forest with acidic, sandy soil). The jungle beaches in Bako National Park among the best beaches in Borneo.

Getting to Kuching from Danum Valley (or Kota Kinabalu)

Cheap internal flights carry you conveniently almost from the furthest fringe of Sabah to Kuching, the capital of Sarawak. Driving from the coast of Sabah to Kuching would be insane (more than 1500 kilometers), as the flights take just a couple of hours.

We flew with Mas Wings from Lahad Datu to Kota Kinabalu: they have four daily flights with promo prices around 25$. To Kota Kinabalu–Kuching leg AirAsia proved to be a cheaper option.

Kota Kinabalu: Farewell to the Colonial Cities and Beaches of Borneo (1 Night/2 Days)

Kota Kinabalu entertained us only for one evening, but feel free to expand your stay. We enjoyed our sunset walk along the waterfront with locals, popping in the bustling – and endless – street food market. Somehow one night still felt enough for us: after the jewels of Borneo, Kota Kinabalu felt rather chaotic and dirty.

Some find Kota Kinabalu a pleasant base for day-trips in the nearby islands, but after Lankayan – or Semporna islands – you won’t find paradise here. The others end or start their holiday at the nearby beach resorts but our research drove us to ponder between Semporna Islands and Sandakan Islands (Lankayan).

The Kudat area on the tip of Sabah (accessible via Kota Kinabalu by road) sounds perfect for a budget beach stay if the all-inclusive prices of Lankayan turn you off.

Tweaks for 1-Week or 10-Day Borneo Itinerary

If you have one week or 10 days to spend in Borneo, narrow down our list of destinations according to your preferences. Personally, I’d drop visiting Kuching (Sarawak) for logistics. Thus, you could choose the best itinerary to match your likings from our Sabah itinerary article .

If you’d still like to visit Kuching, I’d skip one to two destinations of these three: Danum Valley, Lankayan Island, or Kinabatangan River. You can also save one night by skipping Sandakan.

Add-On Destinations for 3-Week Itinerary in Malaysian Borneo: Mt Kinabalu, Maliau Basin and More of Sarawak

Firstly, check out the pace of our 2-week Borneo itinerary. If you long for a more tranquil beat and have more time to spend, I’d suggest adding more days on Lankayan Island (especially if you’re a diver or an avid snorkeler) and Danum Valley (especially if you’re into hiking and wildlife). We were exceptionally pleased with this 2-week Borneo itinerary, so personally, I wouldn’t remove or add anything – other than more time to explore more destinations.

If you have 3 weeks and enough energy to spare, add extra loops for climbing Mt Kinabalu (we will return for that!), visiting Maliau Basin National Park in Sabah, or doing more day-trips from Kuching to the rest of Sarawak (Gunung Mulu caves, river cruises, Kelabit Highlands, and the longhouses of the headhunter tribe).

If you’re planning a 4-week itinerary in Borneo, consider venturing into the vast Indonesian side of Borneo called Kalimantan : there’s a lot more the explore!

It’s also easy to add Brunei to your Borneo itinerary – and tick off yet another country. For visiting Brunei from the Malaysian side of Borneo, you will need just a couple of days.

Where to Stay in Borneo

If this 2-week Borneo itinerary gets you going, be sure to check our favorite lodges around the Malaysian Borneo to get out the most of your stay! We handpicked several luxurious and affordable lodges, which will give you a real taste of Borneo with all the modern comforts, sumptuous dinners, and authentic wildlife encounters.

Check out our list of the best lodges in Malaysian Borneo!

When To Visit Borneo: High and Low Seasons

The high season in Borneo runs from March/May to September/October , meaning higher prices and more tourists. It’s not necessarily the best time to visit Borneo. To be honest, the high season is still the best time in Borneo to see orangutans and other wildlife in the wild, as it rains less.

We see Malaysian Borneo as an all-year-round destination, as we have learned that it will always rain in the rainforest. The weather patterns vary from area to another. Sabah is generally a better all-year-round destination than Sarawak, as it receives less rain.

The dry season in Sabah is from February to August . It rains a lot in Kuching and the inland of Sawarak (these areas receive the highest rainfall in the whole Malaysia), where the driest months are June and July.

Diving high season in Borneo runs from April to December. The best visibility for diving and snorkeling is during the summer months, from July to August. Whale shark season in Borneo is March–May. The best time to see turtles on Lankayan is June-September.

Please don’t let the rain stop your plans to visit Sarawak – or Sabah – during the wetter months. Borneo is a stunning destination – and it’s supposed to rain in the rainforest.

We visited both states, Sabah and Sarawak, during low season and saw little to none rain. We had amazing wildlife encounters in Sabah (orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, rare birds, and many other exciting species in the wild). Snorkeling in Lankayan Island was splendid, although it was low season for snorkeling and diving, as well.

We only advise to plan your itinerary in Borneo very carefully if you’re visiting during December or January, which are labeled as the worst months to visit Borneo. Consider changing your destinations in Sarawak to Sabah area to avoid the wetter areas.

Travel Safety in Borneo: Is It Safe to Travel to Borneo in 2019?

Traveling to Malaysian Borneo is considered generally safe in 2019, although some areas at the eastern coast of Sabah are still listed as possibly dangerous.

Currently, the UK government advises against all but essential travel off the coast of Sabah , including the islands of Lankayan, Sipadan, Pom Pom, Kapalai, and Mataking. The UK travel advice is based on old kidnappings in the area and the proximity of the Sulu Archipelago (Philippines).

The US Department of State lists Borneo as “Level 1: Exercise Normal Caution” area . Still, Eastern Sabah is labeled as “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution” area.

We felt completely safe on Lankayan, as there’s also a military post. We’d visit any of the islands without a doubt, but as always, be vigilant and ask about the current security situation from the tour companies and lodges before booking.

Visiting Borneo FAQ

Check our answers to the most frequently asked questions about planning a trip to Borneo. Please let us know if you have any other questions on visiting Borneo – we’re happy to help!

Do I Need a Visa to Borneo?

Most tourists don’t need to apply for a visa beforehand to visit Indonesian or Malaysian Borneo. Citizens of the US, Canada, EU, Australia, and many other countries are permitted to stay in Borneo for 1-3 months.

Do I Need Yellow Fever Vaccination for Borneo?

There’s no risk of yellow fever in Borneo. However, if you’re coming from a country with yellow fever risk, you need to show your yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Malaysia.

If you’re coming from the US or EU, you don’t need yellow fever vaccination or certificate, unless you have more than 12 hours stopover in high risk area.

Which Vaccinations Do I Need for Borneo?

If you already have the usual travel vaccinations, MMR and diphtheria-tetanus-polio, you don’t need other injections to enter Borneo. We also have hepatitis A and B, which are recommended to all frequent travelers.

Is There Malaria in Borneo and Do I Need to Take Malaria Tablets?

Malaysian Borneo has low-risk malaria areas. Please talk with your doctor to find out your individual needs for malaria tablets. If you’re staying several days in the forested inland of Sabah and Sarawak, it might be wise to take preventative malaria medication. Indonesian Borneo is also low-risk malaria area.

We didn’t take antimalarials during this 2-week itinerary, but it was our own choice and against our doctor’s recommendation.

What Should I Pack for Borneo?

Your optimal Borneo packing list depends on where you’re planning to go and what you’re planning to do in Borneo, when you’re traveling, and where you are staying.

Generally, we’d advise to pack light and breathable clothes, a torch (if you’re staying off the grid), rain gear (it rains in the rainforest), swimming gear (and a snorkel if you have one), sandals and hiking boots or sneakers (depending on your planned activities), insect repellent and leech socks (also available in Borneo), and camera gear.

Our safari packing list is a good starting point also for adventurous vacations in Borneo.

What I Should Wear in Borneo?

Casual clothes are fine allover Borneo. Most people come either to the beaches or the rainforest, and dress accordingly. Weather is hot and humid, so light and breathable clothes are your best bet. For hiking, we recommend convertible pants and quick-dry t-shirts and tops. For city breaks, ladies might want to pack a casual dress or skirt and gents a pair of casual trousers if you’re eating out in fancier restaurants.

Generally, there is no dress code in Malaysian Borneo. As Brunei and Indonesian Borneo represent more strict Muslim culture, it’s polite to dress accordingly. Women should cover their knees and shoulders.

Excited and ready to book your trip to Borneo? Would you follow our steps tracking the beat of Borneo on this 2-week itinerary – or tweak a one-week or even one-month itinerary of your own? If you’ve visited Malaysian Borneo, what were the highlights for you and would you change something in our itinerary?

Your itinerary looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing it.

Did you book all of your flights/accommodations/trips separately? My boyfriend and I are on a tight budget and therefore I don’t know whether to book on to a tour or book everything myself?

Any tips would be appreciated!

borneo tour giant

Hi Sophie! I’d recommend booking all flights by yourself. I’d also book independently all lodges (the only exception: all-inclusive prices or a tour for Kinabatangan River). Flights within Borneo are pretty cheap (AirAsia has usually the best rates). If you’re going to Kinabatangan River, I’d recommend booking either a tour or 2-night/3-night all-inclusive package from Booking.com (these are the same as the tour: the packages include transfers from Sandakan, all activities and meals). That’s the cheapest way to do it. In cities, you can get nice hotels at cheap prices. Check out our “Best lodges in Borneo” article for further recommendations and “Five Sabah itineraries” article for alternative itineraries. If you’re on a tight budget, I’d switch Lankayan to Kota Kinabalu Islands. Stay in Sepilok for orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries (very nice budget lodges available in a jungle setting, much more affordable than Kinabatangan or Danum Valley). Consider one night in Sandakan, as well (nice budget-friendly little town). If you’d like to see Danum Valley, check out the Danum Valley Field Center, as Borneo Rainforest Lodge is pretty expensive. Kuching is an amazing option, as well: cheap hotels and excellent food, great day trip options (check out at least Bako National Park and Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary). I’d pick Kuching for affordable Borneo trip. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi Nina, Sadly we will have less than 2 weeks more like 10 days.I’m just checking out accommodation in Kota Kinabalu for the end of our trip – generally it’s not a problem but I’m struggling !! Any suggestions for an itinerary would be helpful. Thank you again Kathryn

Hi Kathryn, This will be a long answer.

I’d stay only one night in Kota Kinabalu – it’s not that exciting place, and the hotels are rather dull. We stayed in Grandis: it was no frills kind of hotel, claims to be 4-star, but I’d say more like 3-star. The deal that we got from booking.com was affordable, the location is good, the rooms clean and do the job if you’re just sleeping there. If you’d like to invest a little more (double the price), I’d probably pick Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, although Shangri-La is 4,5 kilometers away from the center. It really depends on what you’re planning to do in Kota Kinabalu. Ultimately, I’d pick Shangri-La for 2-3-day stay (enough time to relax and explore the city and nearby islands if that’s what you’re looking for) and any of the solid 4-star hotels in KK for a quick 1-night stay (better location for walking around Kota Kinabalu and experiencing the city).

As to 10-day itinerary, I’d definitely pick Lankayan Island (it would be the highlight for your girls!) and Kinabatangan River. Another highlight would be Danum Valley (although it’s pricey): it’s super fun for the girls with all the activities (tubing in Danum River, canopy walkway, mini hikes in the rainforest, swimming and of course wildlife spotting). I’d go basically with our 2-week itinerary, but I’d drop out Kuching, so you would be based in Sabah. You can also trade Danum Valley to Kuching and it’s still a perfect itinerary, then you could also fly out from Kuching.

So, the 10-day itinerary would be like this, depending on your flights: 1 night in Kota Kinabalu (only if your flight arrives late or you’d prefer relaxing after a long flight. Otherwise, pick a connecting flight to Sandakan) 1-2 nights in Sepilok (orangutan sanctuary, sun bear sanctuary, possible also other activities, please check our separate article on things to do in Sepilok; one night might be enough if you stay in Kota Kinabalu but it’s better to come straight to Sepilok and stay to nights there to relax) 2 nights on Kinabatangan River (book a package deal with transports from Sepilok, check out our article on Kinabatangan) 1 night in Sandakan (dinner at waterfront, possibly English Teahouse for views and lunch, walking around the city and many smaller sights available) 2-3 nights on Lankayan Island (please check our separate articles on snorkeling and the island) 3 nights in Danum Valley (if you can squeeze it in). If the itinerary feels too rushed, expand the other stays according to your preferences and stay the last night in Kota Kinabalu.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. If you’d like to us to plan the route for you in details, we offer itinerary planning at a small charge.

Borneo is so versatile that I’d definitely pick it for your family vacation. You cannot find better wildlife watching from other Asian countries and snorkeling is unique. As much as we love Cambodia, the beaches there aren’t that good. Cambodian holiday would focus more on temples and history. Borneo Rainforest Lodge (our pick for accommodation in Danum Valley) is also listed among the best wildlife lodges in Asia. Seeing orangutans in the wild is among the highlight of our travels – you cannot really compare it to anything else (we’ve also been gorilla trekking and chimp trekking in Uganda but that’s a different story). Also orangutan sanctuary visits in Borneo are special (Sepilok & Kuching). We just published a separate article on spotting orangutans, you might want to check it out.

Please consider booking your hotels stays in Borneo through our booking.com affiliate link http://www.booking.com/index.html?aid=1132006 (also links to other booking sites are found on Travel Resources page, on our site’s top navigation): we would receive a small commission without any extra charge for you. Thank you so much for your support.

Sunny greetings from Namibia! Niina

Fabulous information on Borneo – we hope to travel with our girls (age 13/14) in December and need to work out a good itinerary They love animals and the beach !! Could you suggest a good plan – I’m getting more confused the more I research ! Thank you in advance

Hi Kathryn! How many days do you have in Borneo? I’m just about to publish another article for shorter itineraries (one week or less). If you do have 2 weeks, I’d go with this itinerary, as it has a perfect mix of wildlife and beach time and snorkeling/diving. All these areas are also fun for kids and safe for now (2019). If you have more than 2 weeks in Borneo, I’m happy to give you further suggestions!

We hope to leave the UK 15th December and fly home 24th December – thought this might help in addition to my previous message.Apart from Borneo I thought of maybe Laos or Cambodia.

Your itinerary is amazing! I have checked out the SI tour website and considering the LOWER KINABATANGAN RIVER & DANUM VALLEY tour. https://sitoursborneo.com/web/mysia16/ is this the tour that you did with SI or did you get a tailored package?

Hi Tania! Thanks so much, we loved our every minute in Borneo! We were with SI Tours only in Kinabatangan: the first night in Abai and the second night in Sukau. We visited Danum Valley with Borneo Nature Tours, who owns Borneo Rainforest Lodge. But you can add Danum Valley also to your itinerary with SI Tours 🙂 I’m sure it will be an epic trip!

Oh, awesome post! Reading your post reminds me of the amazing nature in Kota Kinabalu. I see that the everything there is preserved very well. Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

Thanks so much! Glad to hear that you enjoyed visiting Kota Kinabalu. Did you also do further exploration around Malaysian Borneo? If so, I’m curious to hear what were the highlights for you?

Wow this itinerary has got me super excited! even though I won’t be going for another 2 years I am starting to save right now! seeing orangutans in the wild is my ultimate life long dream! how far in advance did you book borneo rainforest lodge? I am looking at pre booking everything on booking.com but I think I would need to book directly through them? thanks in advance from Abbie

Hi Abbie! And thanks for tuning in. Seeing orangutans in the wild was also our dream – you’ll absolutely love Borneo! If you know your exact dates and happen to travel during school holidays, I’d book well in advance. We booked every lodge just a couple of months in advance, so we were super lucky to get the very last room from Borneo Rainforest Lodge (but we had to reorganize our itinerary to fit into their vacancy). So please book several months in advance, no matter your timing! You won’t be disappointed in Borneo Rainforest Lodge: it’s so worth the splurge! The daily activities with your own guide are so versatile and offer profound insight into the wilderness. It’s such a divine place! I’d book directly with them, though you can also book through travel agents. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Happy planning!

Really great article! thanks for the tips. Any recommendations for a tour company to book the Sungai Kinabatangan River segment through? thanks!

Hi Joey! Thanks for reading. We explored Kinabatangan River with SI Tours and were extremely pleased with their guides and the location of the lodges. We loved Abai area for its tranquility and Sukau area for spotting even more orangutans and seeing the rare pygmy elephants. I’d recommend staying at least one night in the both areas. SI Tours owns Abai Jungle Lodge in Abai and Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge in Sukau. Piritta also wrote a separate article on Kinabatangan River, you can read it here: https://www.bizarreglobehopper.com/blog/2017/07/12/kinabatangan-river-cruise-malaysian-borneo Please let us know if you have any questions. Enjoy Borneo!

Hey there – your trip looks amazing and thanks for the really useful article. I’m thinking of doing the trip myself in July – do you have a rough total spend for the trip? Whereabouts did you fly from?

Hi Andrew! Congrats on your trip, it’ll be awesome! The majority of the budget in this kind of tour goes into all-inclusive accommodation (Danum Valley/Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Lankayan Island/Lankayan Island Dive Resort, Kinabatangan River & Sepilok/SI Tours; between 230$-1200$ per person per day). But then again, it’s all inclusive in the best possible sense: all fantastic wildlife tours and meals are catered. The prices also include transfers from the nearest airport (Lahad Datu for Danum Valley, Sandakan for Sepilok/Kinabatangan and Lankayan). In the cities of Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, we stayed in “normal but nice hotels” and ate out; there our daily budget varied between 50$ to 100$ per person. Internal flights were cheap (we used AirAsia and Mas Wings), the cheapest promo prices at the time were 13$ for Kota Kinabalu-Sepilok leg, 25$ for Lahad Datu-Kota Kinabalu and about the same for Kota Kinabalu-Kuching leg. I’d recommend checking AirAsia for the cheapest fares and Booking.com for hotels in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and possibly Sandakan (we stayed there one night, as well). If you use Booking.com, please consider using our affiliate link: http://www.booking.com/index.html?aid=1132006 – there’s no extra cost for you, but we’ll get a small provision that fuels this blog.

What a fantastic adventure. I’m very envious. Yet to make it to that quite that far east but hopefully one day….

Hey, Great itinerary. We’re thinking of heading to Borneo this fall, so it’s nice to see an overview like this of all the tops spots.

We have a little longer to spend, so we might indeed take the road instead of flying. We prefer the road to flying even when it’s more expensive / inconvenient because flying for such short distances is terrible for the environment. Also, if you’re on the ground, you get to experience more of the country you’re in! So there are great reasons to take the road, even if a flight is only $13!

Hi, Jane! Thanks for reading. I really appreciate your view and totally agree with the ecological print. Plus, Pan-Borneo Highway and comfortable tourist buses make road travel easy. But when you are short on time and road takes 10+ hours against an easy 1-hour flight, it’s hard to resist the temptation. In future, we hope to slow down our pace to explore deeper. Even we enjoyed our road trip from Kinabatangan to Danum Valley (whereas all the others took a boat from Kinabatangan to Sandakan and flew the legs Sandakan-Kota Kinabalu and KK-Lahad Datu, which sounds crazy). Just let us know if you have any questions about the places we visited. Happy planning and happy travels!

Hi, Jen & Mina! Thanks for reading. We really loved all the spots we had a chance to stay in Borneo. Lankayan Island and Danum Valley were both exclusive, once in a lifetime kind of experiences. Lankayan is a paradise for snorkelers and divers, whereas Danum Valley is a haven for naturalists, birders, and wildlife photographers. The lodges are luxurious in both, crowning the experience. Oh, how we wish to return!

Hi, Alyssa! Thanks for stopping by! We need to return to explore Sarawak: Niah and Mulu caves are on our list 😉 We saw the pygmies once in Kinabatangan, by the river bank. Our guide had heard of their presence, so we did a lot longer river safari than usual to reach them. It was so special to observe them through the grass; we’ll cherish that experience forever! The other times happened while we drove to Danum Valley: the pygmies were suddenly in the middle of the road just before us! But they took off faster than I could dig my camera bag. When we returned from Danum Valley, we saw the same herd and managed to get at least some shots with our phones. We feel so grateful for all those moments and know that we were really lucky.

Omg, you found paradise! Thank you for the amazing post. Def on my bucket list now <3

The place that you stayed looked so luxurious. What an amazing experience!

' src=

This is a great!!! I live in Borneo myself and I’m guilty of not doing half of this list (except Kuching. I live in Miri though ☺️). I’ve only spent time in Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. Also, glad that you saw the pygmies!!! I heard they’re pretty elusive, and on certain times do people see them crossing the rivers in Kinabatangan cruise so you’re very very lucky!

Your orangutan pictures are great!

Hi, Jen! Thanks so much! So glad you liked my pics. I had my new L-series lens with me for the first time in Borneo. Loved to shoot with it!

JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF BORNEO WITH OUR ECO & WILDLIFE ADVENTURE TOUR

The Malay Archipelago’s natural beauty and unique wildlife are so extraordinary that they inspired British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace’s theories of natural selection in the 1800s.

On our jungle adventure, we travel to the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia to the world’s third- largest island, Borneo, where jungles and rainforests dominate the landscape and life flourishes beneath the forest canopy. With some of the world’s oldest rainforests (second only to Australia’s Daintree Rainforest), it is no surprise that this rugged island is extremely rich in biodiversity. Some 222 mammals, 420 birds, 150 reptiles, 100 amphibians and 394 fish species call the island home.

EXPLORE BORNEO’S WILDLIFE WONDERS ON A TOUR

We will also encounter Borneo’s most iconic species, the Orangutan (meaning “man of the forest” in Malay). Orangutans are highly intelligent creatures, sharing 96.4% of their genes with humans. They are also the only great ape to be found in Asia. Today, wild populations only exist in Bornean and Sumatran rainforests, so getting a glimpse of these gentle giants in their natural setting is a rare and beautiful opportunity.

We also hope to find more well-known species, including pygmy elephants, clouded leopards, rhinoceros hornbills, saltwater crocodiles, and the rare proboscis monkeys.

Borneo is also home to 15,000 plants, including pitcher plants, orchids, conifers and rhododendrons. Bird watchers, botany enthusiasts and general wildlife viewers alike will be delighted by the sheer variety of fauna and flora and the significant parts of the rainforest that remain intact despite pressures from deforestation in recent decades.

Exploring the Giant Island: Borneo Group Tours

Date: August 11, 2019 By Michelle Categories: Travel Blog Posts Travel News & Trip Announcements Travel With A Plan!

Borneo Group Tour

After Greenland and New Guinea, Borneo is the third largest island in the world. This Southeast Asian island is known for its gorgeous beaches and ancient, biodiverse rainforests. These 130 million year old rainforests are home to over 15,000 species of plants. Borneo’s dense jungles also host hundreds of mammals, including orangutans and proboscis monkeys. Shared by three nations—Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei—Borneo offers a diverse and rich experience.

Borneo Group Tour

Below are some unique experiences you can only do in Borneo.

Borneo Highlights and Features

Borneo Group Tour

Sure, swimming with turtles is an activity you can do in most tropical destinations. However, in Borneo, this experience gets magnified thanks to its large hawksbill turtles. Imagine going under the crystal clear waters and kneeling on a sandy seabed to gawk at these gentle shelled creatures. As you await for your encounter with the turtles, you also get to marvel at the breathtaking marine life that you can only see in Borneo. Swim among barracudas, manta rays, eagle rays, and more. It is easy to see why Sipadan is among the best diving spots in Malaysia.

2. Cruise along the river

There is something about river tours in Borneo that set them apart from the rest. Perhaps it is because this tour gives one an intimate look at the sprawling wildlife unique to the island. As you cruise along the Kinabatangan river, prepare to encounter the smallest elephants in Asia, proboscis monkeys, and even traditional tribesmen. Conclude your cruise with a stay on one of the eco-lodges hidden in the jungle. The next day, join a birdwatching activity and checkout the caves nearby.

Borneo Group Tour

An experience in the jungle is incomplete without an encounter with its inhabitants. The once truly nomadic Penan tribe offer a glimpse into the harmony between the jungle and its human inhabitants. You can witness how the tribe’s needs are provided for by the jungle—including water, food, and shelter. To see the Penan, you must take a thrilling helicopter ride to Long Lellang and then a canoe ride to go deep into the rainforest.

Borneo is truly a colorful destination but what is even more phenomenal is that these colors are all natural. A Borneo photography adventure will capture the colors that give Borneo its own character. From the greens of the jungle to the vibrant colors of the local tribes, your camera will be working overtime.

Although more and more tourists are visiting Borneo over the years, it remains to be one of the most underrated destinations in the world. Joining Borneo group tours today will give you an intimate and unhindered experience of the island.

observe the largest and most spectacular species of carnivorous Nepenthes

Although this adventure focuses on observing pitcher plants in the wild, the summits of these mountains are filled with beautiful orchids, birdlife, mammals and some of the most spectacular scenery in Southeast Asia. Also, whilst travelling between Mount Trus Madi and Mount Tambuyukon, we have the chance to visit reserves of two species of giant Rafflesia flowers (open blooms cannot be guaranteed). No technical climbing skills are required, although a good level of fitness and a high stamina are needed to complete this expedition.

Promo video for this expedition:

We catch a flight to Manila in the Philippines. In the afternoon, we catch a connecting flight to Palawan, a biologically rich island to the north of Borneo. Overnight in a local hotel, dinner in a local restaurant.

Redfern Adventures will book the transfer flights for the group, from Kota Kinabalu to Puerto Princesa. Overnight in a local hotel, dinner in a local restaurant.

By noon, we depart from the summit in order to descend back to ‘ Nepenthes Camp ’. Overnight in tents. Dinner is camp cooking.

New disc brake-equipped Giant Trinity TT bike spotted at Tour de Romandie

Luke Plapp is riding a brand new disc brake-equipped Giant Trinity and new TT helmet at the Swiss stage race

Luke Plapp

Luke Plapp has been spotted riding a brand new disc-equipped Giant time trial bike today at the Tour de Romandie . The Trinity time trial bike has been Giant's weapon against the clock for years now.

Luke Plapp has got off to a strong start at Romandie. The Australian started the Stage three time trial sitting in third place overall behind stage 2 winner Thibau Nys .

This Trinity update comes right after Giant updated its top-flight TCR road offering in early March. We don't know for sure yet, but we assume this new bike will keep the Trinity name.

Luke Plapp

Whats new?

A frame designed around disc brakes is the first and biggest talking point when it comes to the new bike. As well as increased all-around stopping power, it is a particular advantage in wet time trials. The switch to disc brakes means that the Jayco-AlUla team will be able to utilise wider wheels and tyres which should contribute to a faster overall frame and wheel package.

In terms of frame design, some areas do appear to feature fairly big design changes. The pictures below of Simon Yates and Plapp provide a useful side-by-side comparison. Starting at the front of the bike, the new disc brake-equipped bike now features a deeper fork leg compared to the relatively shallow unit on the rim brake model. The fork legs themselves are fairly wide and there was plenty of space for Plapp's Vittoria Corsa Speed tyres.

The headtube junction is also different and has possibly received an update to take advantage of the UCI rules which are newer than the current Trinity frame design.

The downtube of the frame could be slightly narrower, though this could be a visual effect due to the large Giant logo. Front tyre clearance at the downtube also seems to have increased slightly.

Moving back, a more slender-looking top tube leads into the new seatstay / seat tube junction. This uses a different, slimmer shape, and this area of the frame has clearly received attention, almost certainly as a result of the reworked chainstays and dropout arrangement now that the rim brake equipment isn't being used. The seatpost of the bike also appears to use a narrower cross-section than the outgoing bike.

A new helmet too?

Luke Plapp

Plapp also appeared to be using a time trial helmet we didn't recognise. Jayco AlUla use the Giant Rivet TT helmet, but this new all-white model appears to have squared-off sides and a rear section that the Rivet doesn't use, it also has a large front visor.

With the Tour of Italy and Criterium du Dauphine looming on the horizon, to be followed by the Tour de France and Paris Olympics later in the summer, this could just be the beginning of an onslaught of brand-new road race, aero, and time trial equipment. We'll be keeping our eyes peeled for new tech and will update this story when we receive more info on the new time trial bike.
