About Courtallam Falls

In Tamil, this waterfall is called Kutraalam. Its located merely 5 kilometers from Thenkasi which is referred to as Kashi of Southern India. Kutraalam Falls is shared by both Tamil Nadu as well as Kerala’s Kollam district, making it a paradise for the residents of both the states. The nine waterfalls comprising it are Main, Small, Tiger, Honey, Old Courtallam, Orchard, Shenbaga, Five, and New Falls. In addition to these, there is a Lord Murugan as well as a Shiva temple. Many oil massage centers and spas dot the place. 

According to folklore, Rishi Agastya devoted himself to Lord Shiva here and also got the Lord’s darshan along with his consort Parvati during his wedding at Kailasha. The rishi also wrote the ancient language of Tamil here which is why the residents of Tirunelveli speak the purest form of it.

Among the biggest falls, the Peraruvi or the Main falls is the grandest and one of the most popularly visited. Cascading down 60 meters from above, this waterfall is always full of water. There is a temple with Chola and Pandya inscriptions. The Courtallam falls is a combination of nine waterfalls, each differs in size, volume of water, height and water current. These falls are considered to be natural spa, which could remove all your body pains. The river sources of thess falls are River Chittra, Manimutharu, Pachaiyar and Tamirabarani which cascades over 60m-92 m. The bitter part of this falls is, during season time, it will be over crowed and thronged with people. The nine waterfalls at Courtallam are as follows Main Falls (Peraruvi), Small Falls (Chittaruvi), Chembakadevi (Shenbaga) Falls, Honey Falls (Thenaruvi), Five Falls (Aintharuvi), Tiger Falls (Puliaruvi), Old Courtallam Falls (Pazhaya Courtallam), New Falls (Puthu Aruvi), Fruit Garden Falls or Orchard Falls (Pazhathotta Arvui).

Apart from these falls, this place is famous for Tirukuttralanathar Swamy temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and another Murugan temple. People after taking bath in these falls visit these temples and seek the blessing of the Almighty. The temple has inscriptions about Chola and Pandya Kings. Chitra Sabhai nearby exhibits paintings from the Puranas and is believed to be one among the five Sabhas where Lord Nataraja is said to have performed his cosmic dance. Nearby this falls, there are lots of massaging centres; people mainly come to this falls for relaxation and to get rid of their body pains. Traditional way of massaging is given here.

Main falls:

As the name itself suggests Main falls is the major attraction among the nine falls. It is the largest falls among the nine falls, cascading from the height of 60 m. The water here is believed to have many medicinal powers as it comes from dense ayurvedic herb forest. This is the only falls that has water even in off season.

Small falls:

This falls is situated just above the main falls and known as Chittaruvi by the locals. This falls can be reached by the flights of steps from the main falls. There are provisions for men and women to bath separately.

Shenbaga falls:

Shenbaga falls is situated among a lovely ambiance; it can be reached by an hour uphill trekking from Main falls. Near to this falls is the Shenbagadevi temple, famous on full moon days. On certain auspicious full moon day, lots of pilgrims throng at this temple.

Honey falls:

Just at a 4km distance from Main falls is the Honey falls. This falls is considered to be the most beautiful falls with enchanting panoramic view. This horse shoe shaped falls, has water falling vertically from all three sides, and so it is not suggested for all, as it may be dangerous to take bath. The trek to this falls is also quite challenging.

Tiger falls:

Tiger falls is one of the safest falls and is best place to take children. This small falls is located at the distance of 2 km from Courtallam bus stand. Adjacent to this falls is the Sastha temple, which is a pilgrimage spot for Iyyappan devotees.

Five falls:

This enchanting falls attracts millions of tourist every year. This falls is separated into five sections and water cascades from all the five in an amazing amount. Among these five falls three is for men to use and two for women. It is small belief among the locals that the five partition of this falls denotes the five heads of hooded cobra. Near to this falls are many fruit stalls that sell forest fruits such as lichees, eggfruit, and mangosteen.

This falls is situated at the distance of 10 km from the centre of the town, beside the road to Tenkasi. This falls is 200 ft high and has step cut out in the rock to break its free fall. Provisions are there for men and women to bath separately. This falls is less crowded when compared to other falls. The other important falls at Courtallam are Fruit Garden or Orchard Falls (Pazhathotta Aruvi); and New Falls (Puthu Aruvi), and then there is the Agasthiyar falls.

A kid friendly falls, also known as Puli Aruvi is a comparatively smaller version of Main Falls where travellers of every age can enjoy because of its moderate water flow. It is said that back in time, tigers used to rest in the caves and also come here to drink water. The water of these falls is used for irrigation purposes while its being collected in a lake.

Courtallam Eco Park

Extensively spread over an area of 37 acres is the Courtallam Eco Park, biggest of its kind in Tamil Nadu. Built in the year 2012, the main objective that the Eco Park supports is to conserve the lush biodiversity and ecosystem of the Western Ghats. Some of the main attractions of the park are children play area,gardens, adventure area, murals and stream walks.

Tagged closely to the Sengottai city of tamilnadu is the Gundar dam built in the year 1983. The main motive for construction of this dam was to provide irrigation facilities to the Tirunelveli district.

Adavi Nainar Dam

Located in the Mekkarai village of Sengottai, this popular tourist attraction, Adavi Nainar Dam is a famous spot for used in film adaptations.Dotted with gleaming streams and falls used for bathing, the way to this dam offers the panoramic mountain views and rice fields and is a true delight for travellers.

Thirumalai Kovil

Sculpted by Parakrama Pandyan in the 14th Century is Kasi viswanathar temple, the tallest shrine in the whole of Tamil Nadu. Touching the height of 54 m, one can easily sight this temple from a distance and can be pulled towards the beauty of the architecture and the grace.

Palaruvi Waterfalls

Nestled at a short distance from Courtallam in Kollam district of Kerala, is the Palaruvi Waterfalls which denotes the meaning "stream of milk". With a height of 91 m, Palaruvi are on no. 32 in the list of highest waterfalls in India.

Kumbhavurutty Waterfalls

A short detour from Courtallam lands you close to the Kumbhavurutty Waterfalls,one of the top tourism places in Kerala. Adding shine to the easter part of Kollam district, this waterfall is essentially a part of the Achankovil river. Other nearby attractions include Palaruvi Waterfalls and Manalar Waterfalls where you can spot wild creatures as well.

Agathiyar Waterfalls

Finding its place on the Western Ghats, these falls are one of the major tourist places in Tirunelveli district of Tamilnadu. Agathiyar Waterfalls, as per the myth is the exact place where Sage Agastya, a worshipper of Lord Shiva got to witness the divine union of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

Manjolai Estate Hill Station

Ruling the Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve is the Manjolai Hills settled in the Western Ghats. These are the aromatic tea gardens that spread their warm essence on the Manimuthar dam and waterfalls. This hill station is popularly known for its pleasant weather and the panoramic view it provides overlooking the beauty of nature it is surrounded by.

Karaiyar Dam

Set up in the Mundanthurai Tiger reserve, Karaiyar dam is a perfect spot to enjoy some time if you are on a family vacation or solo travelling. The area around is enveloped in the beauteous hills of the Western Ghats.

Nellaiappar Temple

A delight for worshippers who revere the Supreme Being Shiva, is the Nellaiappar Temple settled in the Tirunelveli district of Tamilnadu. The divine deity is worshipped in the form of a lingam and applauded as Nellaiappar. This temple is also loved by architecture lovers as it is one of the finely built temple built by King Rama Pandian in 7th Century.

Tiruchendur Temple & Beach

Renowned as the only pristine temple set up on the seashore devoted to the divine deity Murugan is Tiruchendur Temple. While most of the Murugan temples are tucked on hills, this temple is one of the top places to visit in Courtallam for being the only settled on the seashore.

Krishnapuram Temple

Home to the Hindu celestial deity, Vishnu, Krishnapuram temple is a simple yet finley built Dravidian style masterpiece which also nurtures Nayaka's style of architecture. Krishnapuram temple believes in the Thenkalai tradition of worshipping the deities and hence 3 annual festivals along with 4 daily rituals are followed here. Out of which Vaikunta Ekadasi, celebrated over the duration of 10 days in December/ January is the best time to witness the beauty of this temple.

Thenmala Eco Tourism Center

Popularly known as the first planned Eco tourism destination of India, is Thenmala sitting close to Courtallam, Tamil nadu. Housing attractions and activities like children's park, adventure park, musical dancing fountain, trekking, boating, butterfly safari, hiking, night camping, the center also has 10 eco-tourism spots. Districts like Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram are enfolded as a part of the center. Moreover, being surrounded by the lush forests, timber is one of the in-demand products in the country along with Thenmala itself being one of the exporters of honey as its called the 'Honey Hills'.

Manimuthar Dam & Waterfalls

Another proud attraction of Tamilnadu, Manimuthar dam is the biggest reservoir that belongs to the district of Tirunelveli. The main purpose of building this dam in the year 1958 was to not let Bay of Bengal get hampered by the rainwater during monsoon. Stretching over 3 kms, the dam successfully irrigated areas over 65000 acres covering the northern part of Tirunelveli. Manimuthar Waterfalls on the other hand are formed from the Manimuthar river that finds its origin in the Western Ghats. Aromatic tea plantations spread their charm on the travellers who visit the waterfalls and dam,adding another reason to pay a visit here.

Deboard at Tenkasi or Sengottai railway station as they are located around 6kms and 10 kms away respectively from Courtallam. From where you can take an auto, bus or van to reach Courtallam.

Coutrallam Waterfalls

Mesmerising beauty, you think of visiting a waterfall and you end up infront of nine magnificent walls, magical, right. coutrallam waterfalls is a beautiful destination for the perfect getaway..

Fed by the River Chittra, Manimutharu, Pachaiyar and Tamirabarani the waterfall cascades over 60m-92 m. Main Falls (Peraruvi), Small Falls (Chittaruvi), Chembakadevi (Shenbaga) Falls, Honey Falls (Thenaruvi), Five Falls (Aintharuvi), Tiger Falls (Puliaruvi), Old Coutrallam Falls (Pazhaya Courtallam), New Falls (Puthu Aruvi), Fruit Garden Falls or Orchard Falls (Pazhathotta Arvui) are the nine falls and each one offers a different experience in terms of volume and height. Undoubtedly, the main fall is the pick of the lot. It drops from a height of 60 metres and the water is believed to have healing powers. Irrespective of seasons, you find the water flowing freely here. A flight of steps from the main fall leads you to the small fall. Enjoy a shower and spend some leisurely time here. If you are game for an uphill trek, you reach the Shenbaga falls and you can also visit the Shenbagadevi temple nearby. At a distance of 4 km from the main fall lies the honey falls. The enamouring view makes it the most appealing sight. You see water plummeting down from three sides. In case you have children with you, Tiger falls is the best place to be. Water spreads out in five directions at five falls. The odd falls is located at a distance of 10 km from the town. At a height of 200 feet, this is one of the least crowded falls.

Eagles know opponent for 1st-ever NFL game in Brazil. How to get tickets, travel packages

The Eagles will have a marquee matchup when they open the 2024 season with the first-ever NFL game in Brazil.

That's because the NFL announced Wednesday that the Eagles will face the Green Bay Packers on Friday night, Sept. 6, at Sao Paulo's Corinthians Arena.

The Eagles were announced as the home team back in February. Sao Paulo is Brazil's largest city in population with about 12 million residents.

A storied rivalry

The Packers, of course, are one of the NFL's most storied franchises. They finished 9-8 last season and made the playoffs as a wildcard team. They upset the No. 2 seeded Dallas Cowboys 48-32 in the first round of the playoffs before losing 24-21 to the San Francisco 49ers the following week.

Green Bay is led by quarterback Jordan Love, a first-round pick in 2020 who sat for three seasons behind Aaron Rodgers. But Rodgers was traded to the Jets last season, giving Love the chance to start.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are coming off an 11-6 season in which they lost five of their last six games, followed by a first-round loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They revamped a good part of their roster, signing running back Saquon Barkley and adding free agent edge rusher Bryce Huff, linebacker Devin White and safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson among other moves.

The two teams have met 46 times with the Packers holding a 28-18 edge. They last met on Nov. 27, 2022, at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles won that game 40-33.

Why the Eagles-Packers are playing in Brazil

The Eagles last played overseas in 2018, when they beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-18 in London. Last season, the NFL issued a directive that it wants its teams hosting an overseas once every eight years.

That's because the NFL is planning to have as many as eight overseas games beginning in 2025. The NFL can do this after going to a 17-game schedule in 2021. That enabled AFC and NFC teams to alternate between having an extra home game each season.

Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie said at the NFL owners' meetings two weeks ago that the team was willing to give up one of its nine home games this season in order to play the first-ever game in Brazil.

"As part of the international priority, every team is going to host a neutral game," Lurie said. "We stepped up and thought, ‘Let’s do it in South America and Brazil, a really dynamic country ... We are big supporters in trying to make the NFL a more popular game around the world."

The Eagles will still have eight games at Lincoln Financial Field this season. The Eagles know all of their opponents , but the dates and times will be announced sometime in early May.

At last check, round-trip airline fares from Philadelphia to Sao Paulo will cost at least $1,000. The trip takes about 8½ hours of flight time. Sao Paulo is two hours ahead of Philadelphia.

The packages aren't available yet, but they can include game tickets, deluxe hotel accommodation, game day transportation. Those fans placing a deposit can get access to the packages before they go on sale to the general public.

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.
