While RVs and camper and conversion vans have been popular since the late ‘70s, it wasn’t until much more recently that the off-road adventure van space began taking off, with this once-niche segment seeing an enormous influx of interest in just the last half-decade alone. Unsurprisingly, the ever-increasing popularity of this space has given way to a growing number of ever-more-capable and increasingly-well-appointed go-anywhere turnkey camper rigs — the latest and greatest of which we’ll be counting down today in this guide to the best camper vans for an adventurous #vanlife on and off the road.

What Exactly Is An Adventure Van?

As you may have guessed from the name, an adventure camper van is a type of full-size van that’s been converted into a go-anywhere mobile dwelling that offers the amenities and appointments of an RV while boasting a footprint that allows it to tackle the same type of off-grid terrain as your average 4×4 SUV . As such, pretty much every adventure van on the market features a suspension lift kit and off-road wheels and tires that make the vehicle markedly more competent in the dirt. It’s also not uncommon to see these machines fitted with other elements commonly found on off-roaders such as auxiliary lighting, skid plates, crash bars and custom bumpers, rock sliders, jerry cans, recovery boards, and winches. In a similar vein, some camper vans have also been bestowed with exterior racks or sometimes even interior spaces to house other smaller vehicles like mountain bikes, kayaks, dirt bikes, and dual sports. 

While there are some pretty obvious exterior visual differences between regular camper vans and adventure camper vans, the inside of these off-roaders are often nearly identical to their road-going counterparts — save for the addition of more rugged flooring or upholstery. Like regular camper vans, adventure vans come loaded with kitchens, beds, cabinets and other storage space, and sometimes even bathrooms. It’s also not uncommon to see some adventure vans equipped with awnings and pop-up roofs. In general, adventure vans are built with a focus on catering to individuals with outdoor-centric lifestyles, with the upgrades and components needed to travel deep into nature, and to offer a great many of the comforts of home once arriving. As a result, adventure vans do sometimes feature larger fuel cells, water tanks, and other onboard systems that allow them to remain off-grid for longer periods without needing to return to civilization.

What Are The Main Factors I Should Consider When Buying An Adventure Camper Van?

As both homes and vehicles, there’s no shortage of areas one can take into account when shopping for an off-road camper. Knowing this, we’ve saved you some trouble by highlighting the most pivotal aspects to consider when buying.

Platform & Base Vehicle: Though they will admittedly be a far cry from their former selves by the time they’re purchased as turnkey off-road adventure vans, the make and model vehicle platform that each camper is built atop will play a major role in the overall user experience, as this area not only will largely determine performance characteristics (and a good deal of its performance capabilities), but it will also play a major role in factors like maintenance, mileage, and other areas that hugely impact the day-to-day ownership experience. Unsurprisingly, many of today’s most popular box and panel vans are utilized as platforms for turnkey adventure rigs. 

Powertrain: An adventure van’s powertrain is almost always dependent on the unit found in the stock donor platforms though it’s nonetheless a crucial area to review when shopping. You’ll want to explore the type of engine, its layout, its displacement, and number of cylinders. Additionally, you’ll also want to look into areas such as service intervals and mileage, as well as how easy a van’s powertrain is to access and service — at least if you plan on wrenching on the thing yourself. 

Power: Another area that’s important to focus on when looking at an adventure van’s powertrain is its horsepower and torque figures, as this will play a direct role in the vehicle’s performance capabilities — both on-road and off. What’s more, these figures will also play a key role in the rig’s payload and towing ratings, which are also of major importance when shopping. 

Power Delivery: An adventure van can make thousands of horsepower but it means nothing if the engine’s power can’t be transmitted to the ground — a factor that makes power deliver another monumentally important area to review. Just like with regular SUVs or pickups, adventure van models that have AWD and 4WD setups will pretty much always outperform their 2WD competitors when off-road.

Amenities & Creature Comforts: Unlike your average commuter car that’s made to take its passengers from point-A to point-B, adventure vans are built to ferry their occupants from point-A to point-B, and then serve as their home and base camp once arriving. As such, these roving dwellings almost always come appointed with beds, removable tables or nooks, and additional seating. And, while more often than not these models feature kitchens, how well appointed these kitchens are can massively vary — making this another important area to review when shopping. Additionally, some adventure vans also feature yacht-style heads with cassette toilets and wet showers. 

Storage Space & Organization: Considering that these vehicles need to accommodate everything you need to live while off-grid, having solid storage and organizational features are an absolute must — making this yet another pivotal area to explore when shopping. This means looking into not only interior storage and organizational elements such as drawers and cabinets, but also exterior storage elements like roof racks or generator bays. 

Modularity: Depending on if you want to work, lounge, cook, or sleep, you may want to have your camper set up differently, which is why having a modular interior design is also a great idea for campers. A camper’s level of modularity can and will vary pretty greatly from model to model, though this element ins particularly important with smaller models. 

Sleeping Accommodations: On top of an adventure van’s ability to house gear, it’s also vital that you look into the number of people that it can comfortably accommodate. This just means reviewing the number of available beds on any given model, though it is important to point out that most models feature main beds supplemented via dinettes, benches, and other elements that can fold or convert into a sleeping area .

Plumbing: On top of a camper’s kitchen, you’ll also want to explore elements from its plumbing system such as its sink, water tanks (both freehand gray water), and, if applicable, shower and toilet. 

Weather & Climate: Most adventure vans are well insulated and are equipped with heaters and AC units that allow them brave some pretty extreme temperatures. With that said, it’s always best to check on the type of weather conditions any model is made for before embarking into nature. It’s also worth mentioning that most adventure campers can have their AC and heating systems upgraded, and can also have better insulation and better-insulating windows installed as we’ll. 

Expandability and Roof Type: A fantastic way to save space when not needed is to opt for an adventure camper with a pop-up roof , as this will provide ample headspace without raising the vehicle’s center of gravity. 

Go-Anywhere Abilities: A major difference between regular camper vans and adventure camper vans is the latter’s ability to go where the former can’t. This is thanks to adventure camper van’s off-road capabilities. When reviewing this area, you’ll want to pay attention to each model’s ground clearance, suspension, travel, and approach, break-over, and departure angles, just to name a few. 

Off-Road Upgrades: And, while these items can always been purchased from aftermarket companies, it’s still worth exploring what off-road elements and upgrades come standard on an adventure camper such as steel bumpers, skid plates, roof racks, spare tires, auxiliary lighting, winches, and so on.

Best Affordable Camper Van: While the Mercedes Sprinter platform is undeniably the most popular platform in this space, those seeking the greats possible bang for their buck are likely to opt for Ford’s tried and true E350 Cargo Van — as evidenced by Sportmobile’s Classic 4×4 model. Starting from under $90,000, this immensely capable model boasts Fox 2.0 Performance Series Shocks, an Advance Adapter Atlas II All Gear Driven Transfer Case, a Dynatrac Pro-Roc 60 Front Axle, a Dana 60 Rear Axle, and a slew of other hardcore off-roading bits. Powering the adventure camper is a massive 7.3-liter V-8 that afford their a 10,000-pound towing capacity. Other highlights include a pop-up roof, a modular interior, a cool 16.5”of ground clearance, 22” of travel, and approach and departure angles of 44° and 32°.

Platform: Ford E-350 Cargo Van Sleeps: 4

• A custom-built turnkey adventure van offered with a variety of different floorpans to suit different off-road-focused lifestyles.

Best Value Camper Van: Rather than simply aiming to design a camper van that could go off-road, El Kapitan Vans’ Sprinter 144-based Story Maker model was engineered from the ground up to be the ultimate van life machine that’s as conducive to working off-grid as it is road-tripping and exploring off-grid. After spending just a short time inside this vehicle, it becomes abundantly clear that the SoCal-based designers of this rig possess ample firsthand experience living out of camper vans that’s been applied to the creation of the Story Teller in order to address a myriad of common issues — and to generally bolster comfort and convenience. Making the Story Maker all the more noteworthy is the fact that this model is offered with a variety of different interior configurations, all of which aim to cater to different lifestyles. The company also produces a wide array of optional add-ons and upgrades for this already well-appointed camper platform. 

Platform: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Sleeps: 3-4

• A fully-loaded, highly-capable Sprinter-based adventure van with an impressive suite of living systems for extended off-grid stays.

Best Upgrade Camper Van: There’s no rule dictating that interior luxury and external fortitude are mutually exclusive – as evidenced by this offering from RB Components. Called the Sawtooth, this beefed-up adventure van is built upon a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van (the obvious most-popular donor vehicle for adventure conversions), but the similarities to the original vehicle stop at the silhouette. This upgraded version features a 3,000-watt power system, solar panels, a 69-gallon fresh water system, a custom stainless steel enclosed shower with hot water, an electric awning, bamboo wood tables and a BBQ exterior mount – and that’s the short list. It also comes with beefy Toyo off-road tires , an air spring kit, and a water-fording-friendly snorkel intake.

Platform: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Sleeps: 4

• A well-appointed, off-road-capable adventure van with an onboard garage for storing dirt bikes, mountain bikes, & other smaller vehicles.

Best Onboard Garage Camper Van: Storyteller Overland’s Beast MODE 4×4 is an off-road-specific go-anywhere camper van that’s built on Mercedes’ Sprinter platform. Spanning 21’ in length and offering 6.3” of interior headspace, the Beast MODE 4×4 features a full kitchen, bathroom, and generously-sized sleeping quarters — all while delivering exceptional go-anywhere capabilities thanks to a slew of name-brand upgrades. On top of sporting a full suite of advanced tech and driver assists, this model also features a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine that has gobs of torque on tap while delivering solid fuel economy. Best Luxury Camper Van: One of the latest additions to the iconic brand’s luxury Class B Touring Coach range, the Airstream Interstate 24X may resemble a slightly lifted Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 EXT from the outside. Inside, however, this roughly quarter-million-dollar camper van seriously looks like a modern airstream trailer. As such, it boasts what’s almost certainly the most luxurious bathroom and kitchen of any model on this list, along with an overall fit and finish that’s legit second to none. Offered with a single floorpan, this entire vehicle spans 24’, and, while it can seat half-a-dozen adults, it only has sleeping accommodations for two. A turbodiesel engine also delivers a generous 5,000-pound towing capacity . If money is no object and you simply seek the very best in terms of appointments — though not necessarily in off-road capabilities — the Interstate 24X really can’t be beat. 

Platform: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 EXT Sleeps: 2

• A ridiculously-well-appointed two-story pop-up camper bringing the comforts of home to practically anywhere.

Best Pop-Up Camper Van: Powered by a 190-hp powertrain with off-road suspension and all-wheel drive as standard, the HYMER Venture S is the result of a brilliant interior design that’s given way to an off-road camper with an interior that looks more like your average luxury tiny home than it does any kind of dwelling on wheels. Taking inspiration from boutique hotels and lounges, the interior of the Venture S boasts a slew of fine custom cabinetry and built-in furniture as well as a staircase with integrated storage that leads occupants up to the vehicle’s sleeping quarters — a massive full-sized bed that offers an enormous amount of space thanks to a huge pop-up roof. The overall premium nature and fit and finish of this model are huge parts of what make it special, though with that said, this adventure camper is just as competent off-road as your average overlander – a combination that easily makes the HYMER Venture S one of the most attractive models on the space. 

Platform: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Sleeps: 2

• A luxurious off-road-ready adventure camper built on Mercedes’ latest, greatest, & most state-of-the-art Sprinter van to date.

Best High-Tech Camper Van: One of the coolest things about the offerings from Outside Van is their versatility in their options. Their packages all start with a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van – which is a spacious and capable vehicle in its own right – and then they offer a multitude of different packages from there, including a long list of optional customizations. But, if you’re just looking for the basics, you don’t even have to bother with the list; you can just opt for their Approach Van to get all the necessities you need to get you and your companions out on the road. In addition to a well-appointed interior, the Approach features a 50” light bar as standard, along with an aluminum roof ladder, 17” off-road wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber, an off-grid entertainment system with stereo and TV, a topo-themed wrap, and a four-cylinder Diesel engine making 208hp, 332ft-lbs of torque that’s sent to an AWD system. 

Platform: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 170 Sleeps: 4

• An insanely-rugged & immensely-capable off-road camper van with a half-million dollar price tag.

Best Hardcore Off-Roader: Aiming to provide the most luxurious living quarters on the most rugged and off-road-capable platform possible, the Benchmark Vehicles Iglhaut Allrad 170 is a super premium spare-no-expense take on an off-road adventure camper . Riding on a set of alloy billet wheels shod in 37” BFG K02 all-terrain tires, the Iglhaut Allrad 170 features a heavily-upgraded suspension package with FOX 2.5 rear shocks, front Bilstein shocks, and a massive 11” ride height. Powering the van is a a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. If you’re looking for the freedom and sense of adventure that a motorhome provides but want the mobility of a car, then you should consider a camper van.

Camper vans are an attractive option given that they are compact, rugged, and can be as equipped as you need. You can go pretty much anywhere a car can go and get better gas mileage than bigger RVs.

They come in a variety of sizes and configurations depending on their purpose.

Some are designed for weekend travel, while others can accommodate simple full-time living. Some are for campgrounds, and others for boondocking. Some are cheap, and others are shockingly expensive!

How Do You Choose the Right Camper Van?

Like other RV classes, there are many options for camper vans on the market. Perhaps too many. That's why we're highlighting the best ones.

Choosing the best camper van for you depends on your travel plans, as well as the following considerations:

• Size to accommodate your gear and passengers
• Drivetrain (2-wheel, 4-wheel, or all-wheel drive)
• Diesel vs. gasoline
• Service history and mileage (if buying used)
• Weekender vs. Fulltime

The Best Camper Vans 2024

Based on our experience, many visits to RV shows, and other campers, we’ve compiled a list of the best camper vans for you to check out this year.

You'll find camper vans that are tried-and-true, as well as new models that are catching the attention of RVers everywhere.

The following are listed in no particular order, as the “best” depends on your individual needs and wants. But this shortlist will help you determine which camper van is best for you.

1. Grech STRADA-ion

The STRADA-ion is Grech's flagship Sprinter Motorhome. It's a luxury Class B with an advanced lithium-ion battery energy storage system. It provides a total of 1,260Ah, which will run the AC for up to 12 hours on battery power alone.

It has a 280-amp alternator that charges the lithium-ion batteries from idle , meaning you don't have to drive to charge your batteries. The battery management software pairs with its Fire Fly control system, which you can operate from your phone.

The 2024 Grech RV Strada is built on the all-new 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter AWD. with air suspension.

It's 24 feet long and sleeps 2. It comes in 2 floorplans, the Lounge Plan and Tour Plan. The biggest difference between the two is that the Lounge Plan seats up to 9, whereas the Tour Plan “only” seats 7. I put “only” in quotations because 7 is a lot of people!

And all seats have seat belts! Many campervans can “seat” several guests, but only provide seatbelts for 2-4. The Stradia provides a safer alternative for all of your travel companions.

MSRP starts at $259,900.

2. Embassy RV Dolphin SL

The Embassy Dolphin SL is known for its revolutionary floor plan that allows for two separate sleeping areas . That means a person can stay awake or wake up early and not disturb the person who's sleeping!

This separate sleeping arrangement also makes it popular among single parents, traveling friends, and traveling business partners. And, speaking of work, the rear bed platform converts into a table-height desk.

It's 22'2″ long and built on a Ford Transit Chassis. The kitchen and bathroom separate the front living/sleeping area from the rear bedroom. Your usable space can be extended with an optional rear porch with tent.

The Dolphin SL has a lithium-ion battery system. It doesn't come with solar, but the system can be fully charged by the engine. You can add a battery management system with Bluetooth™ connectivity as an option.

Unfortunately, Embassy doesn't list MSRP, but it likely starts in the $150,000 – $175,000 range. So, you have to call to get a quote for your desired floorplan and options.

The No Wood RV = Mold & Mildew Resistant (Video)

BUT! Perhaps the most NOTABLE FEATURE of the latest Dolphin SL RV Model is that it's a No Wood RV. It's made of composite material that makes it mold and mildew-resistant .

That's excellent news for RVers in wet or tropical climates. (Hear that Florida snowbirds?!)

3. Roadtrek Pivot

The Roadtrek Pivot is 20'9″ long and built on a RAM Promaster 3500 chassis. It comfortably seats 4 and sleeps 3 with an optional folding mattress.

It has two different bed setup options: two twin beds or one king bed. The optional single folding mattress can be laid across the front two captain seats.

A popular feature is its Duo Space bathroom , which comes standard. It has a pivoting wall that creates a separate showering area and keeps the other amenities dry. They market it as the “driest wet bath ever.”

It also has an outdoor shower and rear access doors. So, you can open the side sliding door and rear swing doors for an open indoor/outdoor setup.

It comes standard with a 13′ power awning, 600 AMP lithium battery system, generator, 300-watt solar panels, and 12/100 V power inverter.

MSRP starts at $183,386.

4. Roadtrek Chase

We've owned a couple Roadtreks, so it's no surprise another model makes it on the list. The Chase is one of the most affordable on the list with it's simple, efficient design.

The Chase is 20'9″ and built on the Ram ProMaster 3500 extended van chassis. It can seat 4 and sleep 3 with an optional folding mattress that lays over the cab seats.

It has a 300W solar panel and 600 amp lithium battery system. Some other nice standard features include a 13′ power awning, 11,000 BTU A/C, and heavy duty magnetic bug screens for rear and passenger sliding door.

MSRP is $176,386.

5. Coachmen Galleria Li3

The Coachmen Galleria is 24'3″ long and built on the award-winning 3500 Mercedes Sprinter extended platform. We toured it and took the above picture at the Florida RV SuperShow.

It has four floorplan options , including one option (24A) with a fixed bed and power incline storage underneath. Its kitchen is on the bigger side, including a 7.3 cu. ft. refrigerator with pull-out freezer in the 24A and 24FL floor plans.

Standard features include an Onan quiet generator, 330W solar, and a standard 330 Ah AGM battery with 2,000W Pure Sine Wave Inverter.

But you'll notice that we specifically listed the Galleria Li3 . This is an upgraded option for a 630 Ah Li3 lithium battery that we think makes it one of the best camper vans. (The model pictured above is an Li3).

Coachmen doesn't list the MSRP, but it likely starts around $250,000. You'd need to contact a local dealer to learn more.

6. Coachmen Beyond

Coachment earns another spot on the list with the Beyond. We toured it and took the above picture at the Florida RV SuperShow.

At 22'2 “, it's two feet shorter and gets 1 mpg better gas mileage than the Galleria. It's built on the Ford Transit AWD chassis with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine and 10-speed transmission.

The Beyond has three floorplan options , including the 22RB that has a rear wet bath with a flip-down sink and shower. This roomier bathroom makes it a popular choice.

Some standard features include a 2.8KW gasoline generator, 195W solar panel with dual charging capabilities, and a 2,000W Xantrex inverter with auto-gen start. Like the Galleria, you can opt for the Li3 Lithium Battery System, among other nice upgrade options.

7. Coachmen Nova

That's right, Coachmen has a third model that makes our list of the best camper vans. The Nova (as the name implies) is the newest member of the Coachmen Class B family.

The Nova is 20'11” and has three floorplans to choose from. Like the Beyond, it has a floorplan option with a rear bath (20RB).

It's built on the Ram Pro Master 3500 extended Chassis with a 3.6L V6 engine. It comes standard with 220W solar and 3 Group 31 115AH AGM Batteries.

Like the other two Coachmen on this list, you can opt for the Li3 Lithium Battery System. A unique option the Nova offers is a Pop Top with a 190W solar panel, skylight, and Thule awning.

Again, Coachmen doesn't list the MSRP, but it likely starts around $175,000. You'd need to contact a local dealer to learn more.

8. Thor Tellaro

The Tellaro from Thor is one of the most affordable camper vans on this list. It features many of the same functionalities as their Sequence model, except the Tellaro is available with a pop-top.

The Tellaro is 21′ long, and without the pop-top, sleeps two people. It's available in 4 floorplans, so you have lots of choices with this one. We particularly like the 20A floorplan that gives you a sky bunk option in addition to a rear bedroom.

Standard equipment includes a Thule bike rack, 190-watt solar panel, dual 100-Ah lithium house batteries, power awning, and a power-saver AC system. This model features the same generator you’ll find in the Solis, as well as a similar bathroom.

The Tellaro, however, does have a few advantages over the Winnebago Solis. For example, it has a bigger dining table and refrigerator, extended storage space, and a powered awning.

Tellaro MSRP starts at $140,560, depending on the floorplan you select. The 20A floorplan that we like starts at $144,760.

9. 4X4 Tiffin GH1

The GH1 is the new Tiffin 4×4 AWD vehicle, replacing the Tiffin Cahaba. It's a small but mighty camper van that seats 4 and sleeps 2.

The overall length is 19'6″ long and built on a Mercedes 2500 Sprinter chassis with a 3.0L turbo diesel engine.

It has on-board 200-watt solar panel, and a 540-Amp Hour Lithium-Ion Battery Kit with a 3,000-Watt Inverter. It's pre-wired for optional Starlink Pro and its 15,000-BTU A/C has soft-start and WirelessCapability.

The sleek design includes all-metal running boards, a fixed and side-mounted roof access ladder, and a powered awning. Another cool feature is its on-board air compressor.

Tiffin doesn't list the MSRP, but it likely starts around $180,000. Contact a local dealer to learn more.

10. Winnebago Travato

The Travato from Winnebago is one of the top-selling camper vans in North America. At 21’, it sleeps 2 and seats 4.

It has 2 floorplans, one with a single large Murphy+bed (59G) and the other with two single beds (59K). Both floor plans are available in either AGM batteries/generator or lithium with a second under-the-hood alternator (59GL and 59KL).

It's built on a Ram ProMaster chassis with a 3.6L V6 engine.

Roof and sidewall insulation, heated tanks and available dual-pane acrylic insulated windows extend the camping season. We love winter camping, and even wrote an ebook for those who want to give it a try.

The Travato features a Pure 3  Advanced Energy System that provides more than 9,000 useable watt-hours of power. You can boost that to over 12,000 with their optional 4-module energy pack.

The 4 floorplans range from $175,292 to $210,515.

Winnebago also offers a 4-sleeper floorplan with the Solix 59PX . It starts at $152,169.

11. Winnebago Revel

Winnebao earns another spot on the list with the Revel. It's now built on the AWD Mercedes-Benz® Sprinter chassis with a 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine.

The Revel is 19'7″, sleeps 2, and seats 4. It comes with one 320-amp hour LiFePO 4  battery you can monitor via Bluetooth. ®  Plus, a quiet, Hydronic Heating System.

The Revel's most notable feature that sets it apart from others is its power lift bed with large gear garage below. It gives you extra gear storage without sacrificing sleeping space. We also like the fold-down outside table.

MSRP is $223,495, which we think is reasonable for this compact RV that fits a lot of gear.

12. Pleasure-Way Plateau FL

The Plateau FL is 22'9″ long and built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 van chassis. It has a 3.0L V6 BlueTEC diesel engine.

It has two separate living areas with an electric sofa that coverts to a queen bed in the back and a lounge area in the front. This setup allows two people to easily enjoy “Me Time” with separate TVs and sitting areas.

The front lounge also has a multifunctional workstation. And the gallery kitchen has more counterspace than you often see in camper vans.

The Plateau FL has Dual 100Ah lithium batteries, a 2000-watt pure-sine wave inverter, and an Onan generator.

MSRP is $204,750.

13. Airstream Rangeline

The Airstream Rangeline is 21′ long and is built on the RAM ProMaster 3500 chassis. It has a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine.

It has a simple, efficient floorplan with a rear sleeping area for 2 and seat capacity for 4. You can expand the living and sleeping space with an optional pop-top.

It comes standard with a single 270Ah Deep Cycle Lithium Battle Born Battery (LiFePO4), 100 amp charger, a 2,000 watt power inverter, and a 200 watt solar panel.

It may not have as many bells and whistles as other camper vans, but it's very practical and comfortable. Plus, it's one of the most affordable options.

Pricing starts at $147,570.

14. Airstream Interstate

The Airstream Interstate comes in 6 models and two sizes: 19′ and 24′. You get lots of options, especially when it comes to how many people it can accommodate.

The 19-foot models sleep 2 and seat 4, but the 24-foot models can sleep two and seat up to 9 people! It's hard to go into detail about the features and floor plans, because you have so many options.

But Airstream lives up to its iconic name with all six models. So, they're worth checking out individually. The image above is the largest, most expensive of the bunch.

MSRP ranges from $178,640 to $246,351.

15. Entegra Coach Launch

The Entegra Coach Launch is 19'6″ long and is built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 4×4 van chassis. It has a 2.0L 4-cylinder diesel engine.

The interior includes a generous garage space in the rear with a drop-down bed. It can sleep 2 and seat 3 in a small yet functional living area.

On the exterior, it has a fold-down exterior table, a double roof rack, and a moveable roof ladder. New for 2024, is its integrated Starlink Satellite Internet System.

It comes standard with a 48V 210Ah smart lithium battery that provides 10KWh of power. It also has a 3,500W inverter and 200W solar panels.

The Entegra Coach website has a Build & Price feature, which shows the basic MSRP at $246,375.

16. Westfalia Wave

Twenty years after leaving the American market, the Italian RV company, Westfalia, returns to our shores. Westfalia campers are best known for their pop-up roofs, but they are also introducing a brand-new model called the Wave .

The Wave is 20′-9″ on a Dodge Promaster chassis. It has a complete bathroom, kitchen, and versatile sleeping options for up to 6 people. Yes, this campervan can sleep up to six people!

Their patented convertible passenger seating flips down over the driver's area to create a third bed. That's in addition to the pop-top bed that's perfect for kids and the larger bed options in the back. Of course, 6 adults would be pushing it, but it's a great option for families with small kids or teens.

Other notable features include:

• Modern natural tones
• Rear, under-bed trunk that can fit mountain bikes
• Pass-through storage that can fit long gear, like paddle boards
• Cassette toilet in wet bath (yes, it has a shower!)
• Propane cooktop, microwave oven, and Vitrifrigo Refrigerator
• 600-amp hours of lithium batteries & 3,000-watt inverter
• Firefly tablet-style multiplex system

We got to tour it at this year's RV SuperShow in Tampa, and were impressed. They list two Florida RV dealers on their American website and include MSRP, so it seems like they are officially available*!

The non-pop top Wave MSRP is $156,627. The Wave Pop Top MSRP is $167,616.

*It's rather common at RV shows for European models to be showcased and promoted as “coming to America” without any substance backing that up. They attract a lot of hype at RV shows , but then you never see these RVs actually make it onto American roads.

So, it's reassuring that Westfalia already has an established and growing dealership network. Pro Tip: Be sure to ask about FIRM delivery dates. If the best they can offer is “available soon,” consider holding off.

17. The Advanced RV Van

Rounding out our list of the best Cass B RVs for 2022 are the custom vans built by Advanced RV of Willoughby, Ohio.

They are not for everyone because of the cost. They even clearly state in their FAQs that “an ARV will cost 2-4 times more than a factory-built, class B motorhome purchased from a dealer.” They're very possibly the most expensive campervan on the market.

These vans – built on the Mercedes Benz Sprinter chassis – are completely customized to the customer. Each one is built with features and a floor plan personally selected by the buyer after several days of planning with Advanced RV engineers and designers.

No two Advanced RV vans are alike, and each is named by the customer. From the time the order is submitted to the time it is delivered – usually a year-long process – it is referred to by that name and never a number. 

The vans typically have massive lithium battery power supplies, high-end, computer-controlled air suspension systems for smooth rides, handcrafted cabinetry, deluxe entertainment systems, and innovative components like recirculating water systems.

The vans start at about $340,000 and go up to around $500,000.

I told you these were not for everyone. But in a list of the best Class B RVs, Advanced RV has to be included. They truly are quality designs.

It is worth noting that they have Pre-Owned ARVs for sale on their website, as well. You don't get to fully customize it, but you do get a customized van at a better price.

These are all great but I am telling you I own a 1998 Chinook and it just blows all of these out of the water. Just a lot more room. 4 people can comfortably play cards around the resturant like booth and table. My advise is buy a mint one for 20k and spend 10k updating all the electronics. Only downside is I am 5-9 200lbs, not very big, but I have trouble wiping my butt in the little wet bath. Hey, I didn’t buy it for the pooper anyway but it is good enough. Just dont eat a lot of donuts.

Mike, I was surprised you did not have the Pleasureway Ontour 2.0 and 2.2 in your list. These are some of the most sought after vans in the country. I have an Ontour 2.2 and this coach is amazing. From the Ford eco boost engine to the large bathroom it is close to the perfect B. This doesn’t take into account the customer service Pleasureway is known for. I am 6ft 4in and about 280lbs and it is the only B van than is comfortable for someone my size.

We own a 2018 Pleasure-Way XLTS, the larger B+ van, they currently don’t make them (too bad, it’s great!) and we love it! We looked at several others and felt the quality of Pleasure-Way was better than some on your list that you’ve rated higher, but that’s our opinion.

Great list! I recently did 2 road trips, 1 in a Winnebago Solis in the States and 1 in a brand new VW T6.1 California in Portugal. The ‘Winnie’ was pretty good but it’s a big sloppy thing, driving it just isn’t much fun and we had a bunch of issues with it form the start… Not Ideal…

The 2nd trip was much different. Portugal is incredible and I was blown away by the level of quality in the VW camper. The fit and finish was really nice and tight. If anyone is heading out that way check out the company, Siesta Campers, I think they’re really onto something special there. Enjoy the ride.

We have a 1990 Ford E-250 fully self-contained. Shower works but is not hooked up. Few minor dings and repairs. We bought this as a basket case and then had nearly everything repaired so it all works fine now, I think. Has new Michelin tires, new computer, many other things. Microwave, fridge, TV, 2-burner stove, Onan 2800 generator, Comfortably sleeps 3 adults or maybe two adults, two children. Respond with ph# or email and I can provide pics and other details. We don’t need to sell but will as both of us are facing health issues. ~est. $20,000 or so.

Forgot to mention this is a factory Ford 190 Falcon. Mileage is 99435. No leaks on vehicle or engine, trans, etc., all 3 new fuel pumps, both batteries replaced, tranny flushed, inverter plate replaced, full tune-up, manual awning works fine, AC/heater work good, plus several other minor things done and a few yet to be including a few cosmetic things. Currently winterized.

The 13 Best Camper Vans and Trailers We Saw in 2022

The camping and overlanding movement has become an irresistible force. It caught fire before the pandemic, got a strong dose of accelerant during it and kept right on growing into 2022. The new product releases this year had something for everyone, from basic teardrops to million-dollar Unimog-based monsters and everything in between.

Here are our favorite campers and trailers we saw in 2022.

Airstream x REI Co-op Basecamp

The Basecamp is Airstream’s smallest camping trailer. They partnered with REI on a special edition version to emphasize sustainability with a solar power upgrade, fabrics and laminates made from post-consumer recycled materials and sustainable wood. You can also add on a composting toilet.

2023 Ford Transit Trail

Building out a custom camper van can be fun. Lifting the van yourself, swapping out the suspension and potentially voiding your warranty is not as fun. Ford offers professional and DIY custom camper van builders a hand with the new Transit Trail, which comes stock with a 2.25-inch suspension lift, all-terrain tires and the ability to be repaired as a stock vehicle at Ford’s vast dealer network.

WanderBox Outpost 35 4×4

Do you want a luxury apartment on wheels for your camper or a beastly overlander? WanderBox asks why not both with their new Outpost 35 4×4 overlanding vehicle. It’s built on an F600 chassis with massive 41-inch off-road tires. And you are prepped to leave the grid for a while with a 200-gallon freshwater tank, 2,800 watts of solar power and a 190 gallon diesel generator backup.

Winnebago Solis NPF

Winnebago updated its affordable Solis camper van with a National Parks Foundation package that includes an overland-style drawer system, all-terrain tires, a SumoSprings suspension and insulated floor and window coverings for multiple-season use.

Airstream Rangeline

The Airstream Interstate van is excellent, but pricey. Airstream unveiled a relatively cheaper camper van, the Rangeline, based on the Ram Promaster 3500 chassis. It doesn’t offer every feature you could want in a camper van — it has high-traction FWD instead of AWD — but it starts around $70,000 cheaper than the Interstate.

Go Sun x Camp365 Camping Trailer

Trailer builder Camp 365 and solar power products provider GoSun combined their efforts to build the “world’s first fold-out camping trailer.” The trailer is compact and light enough to be towed by just about any vehicle. It folds out to provide spacious accommodations. And the solar power won’t leave you beholden to an expensive campsite.

Bowlus Volterra

Bowlus unveiled the Volterra, their first 100 percent electric production model. It doesn’t come with an electric motor, but it can hold up to 100 percent more power than their Terra Firma model and give an EV up to 65 miles of juice. And Starlink internet service will keep you tethered to your place of employment.

Winnebago Hike 100

That camping trailer life can be expensive and intimidating. Winnebago’s tiny Hike 100 aims to be anything but, offering all the comforts of home and gear storage you need in a compact, easily towable package that starts for less than $30,000.

Taxa Outdoors x Topo Designs Woolly Bear

When two brands we love combine, magic generally happens. Taxa Outdoors collaborated with Topo Designs on a special edition of their Wooly Bear camping trailer, which includes a Topo colorway for the trailer itself and comes preloaded with some custom Topo Designs bags.

Stone Offroad Design Rise 4×4

All-wheel-drive camper vans are great. But German builder Stone Offroad Design takes it a step further using a beastly Mercedes Unimog as the base vehicle. It sticks with the stock Unimog components, which include dedicated off-road gears, locking front and rear differentials and almost four-feet of water-fording capability. Price tag? About $1 million.

Signature Deluxe II

Two Aussie brands, Signature and Toytuf, collaborated on the 2022 Deluxe II camping trailer , which offers a revolutionary rooftop setup. Rooftop tent or rooftop cargo box ? The Deluxe II offers both with an innovative storage cage that allows you to store gear or unwieldy items before mounting the tent on top.

Campravan Raptor XC

There are a lot of cool off-road camping trailers out there. But typically, the added capability to follow your off-roader into the great beyond forces you to sacrifice living space and amenities. A German company, Hunter Nature, resolved that problem with their Campravan Raptor XC — a slide-out, extendable camping trailer.

Ultimate Camper

Small camping trailers typically require a lot of compromises. But the Ultimate Camper from Ultimate Toys combines many of the best attributes of large and small camping trailers into one — we’re not ashamed to call it adorable — package.

Why Rent a Camper Van?

Renting a camper van can provide an elevated road trip experience by pairing some of the comforts of home with the freedom of the open road.

With a camper van, you’ll have everything you need with you including a bed, kitchen, indoor seating space, and in some cases, even a bathroom. Base pricing generally includes a certain number of daily miles (usually starting at 100 miles/day included, sometimes more) with an additional cost per mile if you go over.

Camper van rental companies often provide basics like bedding, camp chairs, a camp table, and cooking supplies although this varies and may not be included in some of the more budget campervan rentals. Most camper van rental companies also offer add-ons for an extra fee such as portable toilets, rooftop tents, and bike racks.

Be aware that you may need to pay a deposit and cleaning fee in addition to the rental fee, so be sure to read the company’s FAQs or discuss this with them before booking.

Seating & Sleeping Space

You’ll want to make sure the rental camper van you’re looking at can safely seat and sleep the number of people that you’ll be road tripping with. For example, some campervans have bench seating in the back, but these seats don’t always have seatbelts and aren’t meant to be used while driving.

Some campervan rentals offer a rooftop tent in addition to indoor sleeping space so you can have two separate sleeping areas. And some rental companies offer an add-on camping tent you can pitch if you need more sleeping space as well.

Some camper van rental companies include a variety of amenities in their rental fee, and some offer them as add-ons for an additional fee . Make sure you’re clear on what’s included in the price so you can plan accordingly.

From a fully stocked kitchen with a stove, cookware, and dishes to camp chairs, an outdoor table, and bedding, some camper van rentals come with all the amenities you need to cook and relax on your road trip.

On the other hand, some budget rental campervans are a little more bare bones so you’ll need to bring camping, cooking, and sleeping supplies with you.

You generally pay for what you get, so if you need the convenience of having all the amenities supplied (for example, if you’re flying to your destination and you don’t want to deal with bringing everything with you), then you’ll want to look for a campervan rental company who provides everything you need.

If you’ll be picking up a camper van near home and can load it up with everything you need for your trip, you can likely save some money by bringing your own gear.

Bathroom Facilities

Some camper van rentals come complete with a shower and toilet (usually a porta potty), and some don’t. If a bathroom is a must for you, make sure this is something you look for when searching for rentals, but be aware you’ll likely pay a little more as well.

If you plan to camp at campgrounds where bathrooms and showers are readily available, you can likely go without these luxuries and save some money. And if you plan on finding free campsites without facilities, you can likely get by with a portable shower and portable toilet system if you don’t mind roughing it a little.

We’ve noticed that most camper van rental companies will allow dogs for an additional fee , although there is one company on our list below that lets dogs join the adventure for free, and there are a few who don’t allow them at all.

Be sure to look into this before booking if you plan on road tripping with your dog .

Age Requirements

You must be at least 21 years old to rent an RV or camper van in the US .

Many campervan rental companies charge an additional fee for drivers who are under the age of 25 due to additional insurance costs.

When looking into renting a camper van, you’ll want to look into insurance requirements and pricing as well. Some camper van rental companies include insurance in their daily rates, while some add on an additional daily fee for insurance .

Most camper van rental companies do not allow you to be covered by your personal auto policy or credit card for campervan rentals . This is because most basic auto policies do not cover campervans that are classified as Class B RVs. Be sure to check with your insurance company prior to booking a campervan rental and ask specifically if your policy includes Class B RV coverage.

One Way Campervan Rentals

Depending on your road trip plans, you may want to start in one location and end in another to make the most of your time and avoid backtracking. If that’s the case, check with the campervan rental company to see if they charge an additional fee for one-way rentals.

In some cases, we’ve seen rental companies offer discounts on certain one way routes when they need a van transported from one location to another – that’s something to look out for as well.

Peer-to-Peer Camper Van Rentals

With the rising popularity of van life, there are now a handful of peer-to-peer campervan rental companies where people rent out their own campervans – kind of like Airbnb but for camper van rentals. This allows owners to earn extra income by renting out their campervans when they’re not using them, and it gives travelers the chance to pick from a variety of campervan models, layouts, and interior designs.

I am looking to rent for a minimum of 6 months; do you know which companies may provide the best rates for More long term ventures? I am primarily concerned with finding comfort at a low price. LOst camper appears to Ben a good option. Was wondering if you knew of any companies specifically geared towards this end.

Many campervan and RV rental companies will offer discounts for long-term rentals. I recommend reaching out to some companies and asking what discounts they can offer you for a 6+ month rental.

Not entirely sure – I’d recommend doing a google search or trying Outdoorsy. There are definitely campervan rental companies elsewhere in Colorado including Denver if you aren’t able to find anything in Colorado Springs. Good luck!

You can always buy an inflatable mattress, manual pump, camping stove, styrofoam cooler, cheap pillow, and maybe some cheap black out material that you can tape to the windows at night.

When done, you can mail the camping stove (minus the fuel), mattress, the pump, and tape back to your residence.

Hi Rob, I think many people like the ease & luxuries that come with renting an already built-out van, but your idea is definitely a possibility. Another option to save money is to look at one-way campervan relocations – they are usually last minute and you have to find your way home, but one of our team members has traveled this way before and loved it.

It’s nice to see these resources are available, but there are none for where I live. Not much in the way for Missouri I guess, and having lived here 95% of my life so far, I can say that the landscape is beautiful here (the people not so much lol). Maybe someday there will be a van rental place available here, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

Besides being great for the environment, the Dalbury E Electric is also great for the pocketbook. Paying for a charge is much cheaper than gas or diesel (only around $5.00 for a full charge), and if you use the Nissan network it’s completely free! You’ll also save on road taxes and service charges (which are much less expensive than those of a normal vehicle). 

While this may not be the vehicle of choice for venturing extreme distances, it will certainly do for weekend getaways or to get you between legs of a long road trip (if you don’t mind stopping to charge now and again, that is).

Once you do pull over for a break, you can whip up some tea or even a small meal on the cooktop, and the small “kitchen” area also has a 39-liter fridge, a tap, and a sink. The front seats swivel around to face a small dining area, and once you’re ready to call it a night, everything flips down to create the perfect area to roll out the sleeping bags or a mattress. 

While the van is on the smaller side, the pop-up roof allows you to stand and walk around inside of the vehicle (when it’s not moving, of course), and while you’re driving, the small size is more of a help than a hindrance.

A VW Transporter is barely larger than a seven seater car. This means that it couldn’t be easier to drive and park. You are also unlikely to find any height restrictions that you can’t fit under, which means any route or car park is yours for the taking. A VW transporter is small enough to do your weekly shop in or to take the kids to school in so there is no need to have a second vehicle. As it’s easy to park you shouldn’t have any problems storing it at your home, it’ll fit inside any garage and would even be easy to park on a small terrace street.

The Best Van For Long Term Travel

If you plan on travelling and living the van life long term, then the best van for you is going to be something that has enough space to spend long periods in. Remember- there are bound to be some rainy days that need to be spent inside or days when you just want to be able to chill out in your own space. It’s easy to think ‘the bigger, the better’ when choosing the best van for long term travel. For some people, this is the case, especially if you’re travelling with older children who need some space for themselves, but remember you have to drive and park your vehicle of choice. A school bus, for example, may look super cute and feel like the perfect solution to spacious living with everything you could need and more but it’s got in to struggle with some steeper uphill climbs, narrow roads and tight parking. The vehicle that we think is the best van for long term travel is a long wheelbase (LWB) sprinter van. 

A LWB Sprinter is the perfect base to turn into a camper; they’re big enough to house pretty much everything you could possibly need for an epic road trip while still being small enough to drive like a car and fit into a regular parking space. Sprinter van life is so versatile; once you have your base vehicle, there are so many ways that it can be fitted out to best suit you. Before you decide on a layout, do some research online as there are so many amazing builds and van life ideas out there to help you on your way. 

Enough room to stand up in

If you’re planning long term travel in a van then being able to stand up in your tiny home is a huge bonus and a significant factor in deciding the best van for you. Cooking sitting down can get really frustrating, really quickly. If it’s raining outside you, want to be able to stretch out in your van, not have to stoop and give yourself backache just because the weather isn’t so good. Even if you’re on the taller side, the super-high roof van is probably going to be tall enough, measuring 2.24m (7ft4) even once you lose some height due to insulation and interior walls you’re still left with plenty of room. 

Drives Like a car

A van like a Mercedes Sprinter van is the largest type of van you can drive on a regular driving license (or it is in the UK anyway). This means you don’t have to take any extra lessons or tests to be able to buy a LWB sprinter. You can drive these vans on a regular driving license because they operate like a car, they’re easy to manoeuvre, manage uphill climbs well and will fit into most regular parking spaces. A stress-free driving experience goes a long way to a fun road trip.

They are a world wide vehicle 

Sprinter vans can be bought all over the world. This is a good thing as if you have any problems with your van, no matter where you are, there is likely to be a Mercedes garage nearby. This means you can travel with a peace of mind that if anything does go wrong, help won’t be far away. 

Big Enough to have a fixed bed AND a seating area.

Usually, when thinking about the interior design for your camper your going to have to compromise on either having a fixed bed or a seating area that converts into a bed, so you’re either going to be putting your bed together every day or, if you have a fixed bed, spending a lot of time sitting on it. However,  if you’re clever with your design a LWB Sprinter is big enough to accommodate a fixed bed and a seating meaning you can have the best of both worlds!

Can Make Great Off Grid Homes 

The best van is one you can spend a lot of time in off the grid. You can certainly do this in a sprinter van. Add a couple of solar panels to your roof, and you’ve got all the power you need. An underslung water container can provide you with water for several weeks, and a porta-potti should keep you going for a while. You’re all set for off grid living ! 

Can be pretty pricey

A brand new sprinter van is going to set you back around £40,000. That’s pretty steep. While you can obviously pick up a second-hand sprinter van for much, much less than this it is still probably going to be more than a similar second-hand van from a different manufacturer. This is partly due to the fact that they are a great van but is also down to the fact that they are the most well known and popular.

Still needs converting 

While a sprinter van is widely considered the best van out there, it doesn’t (usually) come as a ready-made camper van. This means that when you’re looking for a van, you need to consider the cost of your conversion on top of the price of the vehicle. A bigger van means a higher fuel cost 

A LWB sprinter van means you have plenty of space as they’re pretty big. However, this also means that they’re fairly heav, ymeaning your fuel expenses may end up being pretty high. If you want to spend less on fuel, then you’re going to want to choose a smaller van.

Difficult to take to remote areas 

Sprinter vans are great vans, but they’re no .off-roaders This means that they can be challenging to take into genuinely remote places. If you want to go off-road, you can modify your LWB sprinter to give it 4×4 feature but this, of course, comes at an extra cost.

HOW LONG DO YOU NEED FOR A CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP?

So how long does it take to do a cross country road trip? The drive from Los Angeles to New York City is 2776 miles and takes roughly 41 hours without stopping. At 8 hours a day, that would take you five days to complete.

But what about stops and, you know…enjoying the ride?

Without knowing your route, it’s hard to suggest a time frame. At a minimum, you’ll need a week for a one-way cross country road trip. Two weeks is better, though. Two weeks allows you to drive for shorter distances and to take more time to enjoy the places you stop at. Three weeks is perfection!

America is the 3rd largest country in the world, so there’s a lot of ground to cover when driving cross country. It’s estimated that it takes about three months to see every state in the lower 48.

THE BEST ROAD TRIP ROUTES IN THE US

When planning a road trip, the question “What is the best cross country road trip?” is bound to come up. The sheer size of the US makes answering it a complicated task. Below, I will cover the most iconic road trip routes and a few other suggestions to spark your own creativity. 

Some things to consider for yourself are how much time you have, what season you’ll be traveling in, and what kind of stops you’re interested in making. Do you want to focus on nature activities, touring big cities, tasting America’s best food, or quirky roadside attractions? 

Let the following routes be an inspiration, but don’t forget it’s also possible to plan your trip as you go. 

When we built our cross country road trip itinerary, we knew we needed to get from North Idaho to Maryland. It was winter, so we chose to avoid the Rocky Mountains and any hazardous winter driving conditions. We opened up a map (really, it’s more like we opened up an internet browser and looked at Google Maps) and figured we should head South and plan as we go. 

We knew we would visit Utah’s National Parks, but other than that, we left it open to allow for spontaneity and random side trips.

On our way traveling through Arkansas, I looked at the map and noticed we would be close to Hot Springs National Park. We had time, so we decided to make a small detour to see America’s first unofficial National Park. Those are the kind of things you want to leave time and space for. 

Let’s explore the most popular cross country road trip routes.

Famous For:  Kitschy roadside attractions, old-fashioned motels, and its throwback Americana feel

Route 66 is the most famous American road trip that is more about the journey than the sights. You’ll travel through small towns where the most you’ll see is an old-fashioned main street and an old diner. It’s worth it to tap into an old-time Americana complete with neon lights and Art Deco motels. It’s also a great opportunity to see underrated cities like Albuquerque and Oklahoma City.

Begins and Ends:  Downtown Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, CA

Time Needed:  At 2448 Miles, Two Weeks (one way)

Highlights :  Cadillac Ranch  in Amarillo, TX, eating a hamburger and an ice cream float in an old-fashioned diner, getting a photo op in front of a Route 66 sign, Tower Station and U Drop Inn Cafe in Texas, Gateway Arch in Missouri.

PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY

Famous For:  Gorgeous, sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

The PCH, or Highway 1, is one of the most iconic drives in America. We’ve done sections of the drive, and it never disappoints. From the fecund forests of Washington to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to the sunny ocean vibes of Southern California, there’s something for everyone on this beautiful coastal drive.

Begins and Ends:  Seattle, WA to San Diego, CA

Time Needed:  1650 Miles, It can be done in one week, but 2 weeks is better (one way).

Highlights :  Olympic National Park , Big Sur, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Redwood National Park, Mendocino, Hearst Castle, Los Angeles, San Diego Zoo, Laguna Beach, Tacos in San Diego

Tip : Drive North to South so you can be closer to the water for the drive.

THE LONELIEST ROAD

Famous For:  Large stretches of driving where you’ll see little to no signs of civilization.

Route 50, also known as “The Loneliest Road” and “the backbone of America,” is a true cross country road trip. Taking you from coast to coast, you’ll pass through 11 states on this grand road trip across America. From metropolitan cities like Washington D.C to deserted ghost towns to the azure waters of Lake Tahoe, this route takes you on a diverse cross-section of the US that’s guaranteed to give you a little bit of everything.

Begins and Ends:  Sacramento, CA to Ocean City, MD

Time Needed:  3000 Miles, Can be done in two weeks, but three weeks is ideal (one way).

Highlights:  Great Basin National Park, Colorado National Monument, Washington D.C, Lake Tahoe, Moab, Arches National Park

THE GREAT NORTHERN ROAD

Famous For:  The longest transcontinental highway in the US

THE OREGON TRAIL

Famous For:  An arduous, historical one-way trail people used in the 1800s to find better opportunities out West.

History buffs will love learning about Lewis and Clark, city lovers will enjoy exploring Boise and Boston, and nature seekers will love seeing Yellowstone , America’s 1st National Park.

THE ATLANTIC COAST

Famous For:  Driving through America’s most iconic and historic cities.

Explore America’s oldest cities and charming beachside communities by taking a drive down The Atlantic Coast. This route takes you on I-95, where you can go from historical sites like the Statue of Liberty, wild horses on Assateague Island, to the artsy beach town of Saint Augustine, Florida. This is a great cross country trip for someone who doesn’t want large chunks of time in the car with nothing to see. There is so much to do and something for everyone.

Begins and Ends:  Maine to Florida

Time Needed: 1900 miles, 10 days is good, but two weeks is best (one way).

Highlights : Mystic CN, Boston MA, Savannah GA, NYC, detours to the beaches of North and South Carolina, St. Augustine, The Florida Keys

TIP: I-95 is great to hop on to when you want to get somewhere faster, but the true beauty of this road trip is mainly on the smaller roads that run along the coast. Deviate from the 95 to explore the coastal islands that run down the entire east coast.

THE MIGHTY FIVE

Famous For:  Out of this world red rock desert landscapes and bucket-list hikes.

A Utah National Parks road trip  to explore all 5 of Utah’s National Parks (dubbed the Mighty 5) is perfect for adventurers and explorers. With mindboggling hikes, slot canyons to wade through, white water rafting, and an ocean of red desert to traverse, Southern Utah will leave an imprint on your soul.

Begins and Ends:  Moab, Utah to Springdale, Utah

Time Needed:  375 Miles, Can be done at warp speed in 7 days, but 10 days are best (one way).

Highlights:  Angels Landing Hike and The Narrows in Zion, Delicate Arch in Arches , Fruit Picking in Capitol Reef, Mesa Arch in Canyonlands, Little Wild Horse Slot Canyon

THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

Famous For:  Stunning Fall foliage display.

The  Blue Ridge Parkway  takes you through the beating heart of Appalachia, where you’ll pass waterfalls, lookouts, charming tunnels, small towns, and meandering rivers. If you’re driving it in Fall (the most popular time) you’ll see Fall foliage that rivals the best of New England. With a maximum speed of 45 MPH and no big trucks allowed, it’s the kind of road where you’ll want to take your time to enjoy the views while Bluegrass music plays on repeat.

Begins and Ends:  Great Smoky Mountain National Park in NC to Shenandoah National Park in VA.

Time Needed:  469 Miles, 3 days is enough, 7 Days is ideal (one way)

Highlights:  Great Smoky Mountain National Park,  Asheville, NC, Mile High Swinging Bridge, Blue Ridge Music Center, Mabry Mill, Shenandoah National Park , Roanoke, VA

TIP:  If you want an even longer journey, you could include additional  East Coast National Parks  in your itinerary for even more sublime nature.

These are tried and true cross-country road ideas, but don’t forget you can always make up your own road trip route . You could go on a donut road trip and check out the best donuts in every state (psst-the  best donuts are in Boise ), or you could see as many  west coast national parks  as you can. 

Maybe you’ll be road-tripping in Spring and want to see the most exquisite wildflower blooms in the country, or it’s summer, and you’ll hit up America’s best waterparks. The sky is the limit!

Now, let’s discuss how to plan a cross-country road trip. Based on our experiences, we’ve created a cross-country travel guide that includes everything we did and learned along the way.

BEST CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP CAR

If you won’t be using your own car, you’ll need to find the best cross country road trip car for your needs. If you’ll be traveling in winter or in places with rugged terrain like Southern Utah, it’s recommended to have a four-wheel-drive vehicle that can handle the rougher conditions.

The first choice is to use a car rental service. You can look on rentalcars.com to see what the going rates are for rental cars. It’s a search engine that specializes in rental car prices across the web. You can often get a discounted rate if you’ll be using the car for a longer period.

Also, don’t forget if you are only going one way with the car, most places will charge a one-way delivery fee.

Another option is to rent a camper or RV for your big adventure. You can rent from a peer-to-peer service like RV Share and Outdoorsy , or you can opt for a company like Cruise America .

If you like the idea of an RV but want something smaller, you could also opt for a converted van that typically has a bed, a fridge, and other amenities. It’s a great option for solo or couples travel. The biggest renter of campervans is Escape Campervans . Since they have multiple offices, it’s a great choice for someone who wants a one-way rental. You can also check the sites I mentioned above, RV Share and Outdoorsy, for campervan rentals.

An RV or campervan rental can range from $100-$500 a day. It’s a more expensive option, but the potential for savings is better because you can cook your own meals and potentially camp for free. But don’t forget about gas prices! This brings me to our next section..coming up with a cross country road trip budget.

TIP: A n alternative option to a rental car is to try your luck at a one-way car or RV transfer service like immova and transfercar . The basic idea is that a company or person needs a car or RV moved and you pay as low as $1 a day to have a practically free vehicle. A great option if you are flexible and their travel dates work for you. You can also look at when big RV companies like El Monte RV need their RVs moved and offer them at exceptionally low rates.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO DRIVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY?

There’s no straight answer to what a cross-country road trip costs. We averaged about $150 a day on a three-week road trip in our RV. Could we have done it for less? ABSOLUTELY. We didn’t go crazy, but we also didn’t scrimp. If you’re willing to cut corners and camp in free places, you can potentially do a road trip for $50-75 a day.

Let’s explore how to plan a road trip on a budget. I’ll discuss the five main expenses and offer tips on how to save money.

• GAS : Depending on what kind of vehicle you are driving, this will probably be one of your biggest expenses. You can use a fuel calculator to estimate what it will cost for your trip and your car type. If you are driving an RV, you can use this fuel calculator to get a rough idea of what it would cost. As for saving money, you can use the GasBuddy App to see the cheapest gas stations on your route. We also use our AMEX Blue Cash Preferred Credit Card, which gives us 3% cash back on gas and 6% cash back on groceries . We spent $1300 on gas, which means we earned roughly $40 back. That’s a free tank of gas! That and the $150 sign-up bonus make it a great money-saving choice.
• LODGING: Here is where you have a lot of options for saving money. Camping is the cheapest way to travel cross country whether you choose to pitch a tent, sleep in your car, or are in an RV or campervan. You can stay in conventional campsites that range from $25 to $60 a night, or you can try to find free campsites. Free campsites are generally found on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land or parking lots (Walmart parking lots are popular) that allow you to sleep overnight – but please don’t pitch a tent in a parking lot! Only vehicles are allowed. The best way to find camping spots is to search on the Dyrt App . It’s a camp reviewing site that is a GREAT resource for finding campsites and free sites. It’s worth upgrading to the pro version to have access to it offline. If camping isn’t your thing, you can look for cheap room rentals with an app like HotelTonight. HotelTonight is perfect for road trips since it searches for last-minute discounts on hotels. It’s also a tiered service so the more you use it, the more exclusive discounts you can access. If you sign up for an account and put in my discount code CGRANCE in your Account Settings, you can get $25 off a booking. You can also use the sites like Booking to see what’s available around you. Airbnb or VRBO could also have cheap options, but you’ll have to plan ahead since it’s not always possible to book it the same day. In general, lodging in a budget hotel will cost you $50-$125 a night.
• FOOD: We spent roughly $25 a day for a family of three. Granted, we ate all of our meals in our camper and rarely got takeout. That’s where having a fully functioning kitchen on wheels can go a long way to saving you money. If you aren’t traveling in an RV, you’ll want to save money by making your own meals as much as possible. Pack a cooler and eat turkey sandwiches every day if you need to. My favorite way to get fancy on the cheap is to make a charcuterie spread of summer sausage, salami, crackers, cheese, olives, almonds, and dried fruit. I even bring a wood cutting board and stemless wineglasses with silicone sleeves because it’s how I roll. Also, most gas stations will have microwaves. We would often buy frozen burritos from Amy’s beforehand at a grocery store and heat them at a gas station for lunch.
• ENTERTAINMENT: Our entertainment costs came out to about $3 a day. We spent very little since we had a primarily nature-based itinerary. Hiking is free! Plus, we opted to buy the National Parks pass that gets you into every National Park and additional federal land sites. You should definitely buy the pass if you are going to any National Parks. You can buy and learn more about the pass here. If you are visiting a big city, you can check if it offers a City Pass . A city pass will typically give you discounts to restaurants, museums, and popular attractions.
• MISCELLANEOUS – There are always little costs that come up while you travel, whether that’s souvenirs, oil for your car, or payment for a toll. You should leave room in your cross country road trip budget for random things that always pop up. I would budget $5-$10 a day for miscellaneous items.

We recorded everything we paid for. You, of course, don’t need to do that, but if making spreadsheets is fun for you (woohoo!), then I would recommend using Excel or Numbers and using one of their pre-formatted templates for logging your costs.

TIPS FOR A CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP

Before you head out on your big adventure, here’s some cross country road trip advice to spare you any headaches.

• Before you leave, make sure to get an oil change and a full check-up on your car, including having your tires checked. It’s also worth investing in a roadside assistance plan, especially if you have an older vehicle. We used AAA and had to use it three times on the road. AAA is great for regular cars, and Good Sam Roadside is good for RVs. You can check prices for  AAA here  and  Good Sam Roadside here . 
• Make sure to download your maps beforehand! You don’t want to be stuck in Utah because you have no service and no idea which road to take. Google Maps has the ability to download maps. Use it!
• We prefer to drive for a maximum of five hours. Anything more than that makes the road trip unenjoyable. Find the sweet spot for you. It’s okay to do a few long 8-hour days, but remember to balance them with days off of driving.

• Emergency Roadside Kit – Having a   roadside emergency kit  with a surplus of safety devices is essential for a road trip. At the very least, make sure you have a   high-quality set of jumper cables . If you are driving in a remote area where other cars might not be able to help you out, you might want to consider a  mobile battery jumper  that allows you to jumpstart your car on your own.

• Cooler – A high-quality cooler that will keep your food cold for days is a great investment. We are die-hard fans of Yeti and love the Yeti Roadie 24 Hard Cooler  for road trips. It can fit behind the passenger’s seat and is long enough to fit a bottle of wine. More economical choices are the Arctic Zone Cooler and the   Igloo Quart MaxCold Cooler .
• Phone Chargers and Power Bank – In addition to our phone charger that goes into the cigarette lighter, we bring a  splitter  so multiple people can plug in their device and a  solar charger power bank,  so we’re never left without something to charge our devices. It’s handy when traveling with many people so everyone can have a way to charge a device.
• Car Organizers – Having an organization system is great if you’ll be on the road for a while or are making a family cross country road trip. We like this  backseat organizer  with SO MANY pockets for your gadgets, notebooks, and snacks. It’s a fantastic option if you’re traveling with young kids. We particularly like that it has a tablet holder.
• I also think this  car seat gap organizer  is brilliant. It sits in the gap between the console and the passenger or driver’s seat. It’s that little bit of space where you always drop your phone, and you’re like  “$%^&*!”  because it’s so difficult to fit your hand in there. Well, this organizer stops anything from falling in that gap while also providing extra storage. Like I said…brilliant.
• Conversation Starters – When you hit the road, pull up our post of 160 road trip questions and road trip trivia questions. These are perfect for long stretches of time when you can either get to know your travel companion even better or test out your trivia skills on each other. Also, read through our post on the best things to do on a road trip for more fun games and ideas.
• Entertainment – Your podcasts, e-books, road trip playlists, and Netflix shows should all be already downloaded (don’t rely on your cell service). If you’re not already signed up, you can even do a trial run of Audible or Amazon Music to get free fun content for the road.
• Cozy Everything – Being cozy on a road trip is paramount! Bring some cozy slip-on shoes, a sherpa blanket from Pendleton, and breathable clothing.

Hi. Reading your time to allow for each trip has me confused. Are talking one way, or round trip? I can’t imagine doing a cross country trip in two, or even three weeks and have it not be an awful lot of all day driving round trip.

Hi! I’m glad you enjoyed the article. Sorry for not responding sooner. We were traveling in Thailand, and I just saw this today. Yes, all the recommended drive times are for one way. Round trip, you would need to double it or cut out a lot of day trips and exploration to reduce your time.

If you’re dying to recreate your own (decidedly more upscale) version of Nomadland , Loef has just the van for you.

The German outfit’s new luxury camper offers space, comfort, and the unbridled freedom to put down (temporary) roots wherever you desire. Based on one of the longest vans currently on the road—an extended MAN TGE—the Loef spans 24 feet from bumper to bumper and stands more than 9 feet high. This makes it larger than some Class A and C motorhomes. Despite its imposing size, Loef claims the 180 hp four-wheeler handles like “an agile big cat” even in the urban jungle.

Aside from performance and proportions, the camper has a stylish interior inspired by timeless Scandinavian design and high-end amenities to boot. The layout centers around two separate entertaining areas. At the rear, there’s a wraparound five-person sofa with an adjustable table. This area can open out for al fresco dining. When it’s time for sleeping, the table drops down and turns this space into a master suite with a bed that spans 69 by 77 inches.

The front, meanwhile, features a five-seat dinette with an L-shaped bench and another adjustable table. Similarly, this area converts into a sleeping nook designed for children featuring a traverse bed that measures 47 by 69 inches.

At the center of the camper is a well-appointed kitchenette with a four-burner Thetford stove and oven, plus a refrigerator and freezer. A few steps away lies the “wellness area” a.k.a. the flashy bathroom, which comprises an electric-flush cassette toilet, a mirrored cabinet and a ceiling-integrated rainfall shower with hand sprayer.

To top it off, the Loef can accommodate posh tailgating. In addition to a table and chair set that can be erected underneath the awning, the camper comes complete with a Big Green Egg Mini Max ceramic grill that slides out the rear doors. It also features a chic cocktail bar, located just inside the passenger-side door, where one can make the requisite libations to accompany the barbecue feast.

As for power, the camper is equipped with a 100-Ah lithium battery, a 2,000-watt inverter and a 320-watt solar charging system. This is enough to power the appliances and the smart home control system, as well as a spate of USB and 230V outlets. Internet comes courtesy of an LTE antenna.

Loef estimates that camper builds will range between $130,000 and $150,000. Hey, nobody said the lavish nomad life was going to cheap.

Moscow/Zelenograd and New Moscow

Zelenograd and New Moscow are two large parts of Moscow city, that lie (often far) outside consolidated residential zone of the city, which lies within and just beyond the MKAD (Moscow Ring Road).

Zelenograd was added in Moscow in 1968 as one of the leading scientific centers. New Moscow was added to Moscow in 2012, forming Novomoskovky and Troitskiy Administrativniy Okrugs with plans of new vast expansion. New Moscow territory is yet to change according to its new city status. Even though suburbial kind construction intensifies in Novomoskovsky Administrativniy Okrug, Troitskiy Administrativniy Okrug still mostly has a rural feel.

By plane [ edit ]

Vnukovo and Ostafyevo airports are situated in New Moscow proper, though from Ostafyevo airport you still have to go through the "old" Moscow. It is possible to get from Sheremetyevo to Zelenograd without going to the old city - you have to change to 400 minibus on Leningrad highway or on local train on Planernaya. From Domodedovo airport you'll have to go through the old city anyway (the route through Domodedovo and Podolsk will take more time).

By train [ edit ]

Local trains connect Zelenograd with Leningrad Train Station, Tver, Klin and Konakovo. Local trains from Kiev Train Station pass through northern part of New Moscow between Novoperedelkino and Krekshino. To go to Zosimova Pustyn you may want to go all the way to Bekasovo, but trains there are infrequent. It is possible to get to New Moscow through Podolsk, but you'll have to change to bus there.

By bus [ edit ]

Most frequent bus to Zelenograd is bus 400 from Rechnoi Vokzal. It has special pricing. Buses are primary way of public transport to get to New Moscow, new buses are often added. Most buses start from Yugo-Zapadnaya and Tepliy Stan metroes, and Podolsk train station. Troitsk serves as a bus hub.

By car [ edit ]

Zelenograd is accessible by M10 highway. Major highways in New Moscow are M3, A101, Warsaw highway Podolsk - Kresty (joining with A101), first "Beton Ring" A107 and Borovsk highway Peredelkino - Vnukovo - to join with M3. M10 and A101 are often highly congested, M3 may be less prone to it, except Moscow vicinity, and crossing with A107, A107 is congested near M3 crossing, which is northwest of New Moscow; Warsaw highway is congested in Podolsk, and you'll have to pass congested M2 to get there from MKAD.
