Doobie Brothers frontman Michael McDonald plays the keys while singing.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to “Listen to the Music.”

Legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Doobie Brothers have just announced plans to tour all over the U.S. in 2023 as part of their ongoing ’50th Anniversary Tour’ from May through October.

This time around, original members Michael McDonald, Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons and John McFee will hit venues that they missed when they first celebrated their half century together last summer.

That includes huge New Jersey shows at New Brunswick’s State Theatre on July 8 and July 9 and Morristown’s Mayo Performing Arts Center on July 11 and July 12.

Michael McDonald and co. will close their 35-concert trek at Atlantic City’s Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Oct. 8.

And if you want to snag tickets to see the “China Grove” classic rockers live this summer, you can as early as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, March 3 (and in some cases, March 10), fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Doobie Brothers 2023 schedule

The Doobie Brothers will take their tour “to the streets” starting on May 2 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului, HI.

From there, they’ll rock on down the highway in major cities like Kansas City, MO (June 14), Madison, WI (June 21), Lincoln, NE (Aug. 20), Charleston, SC (Sept. 9) and Washington, D.C. (Oct. 4).

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

Doobie Brothers set list

When you have as many interesting hits as The Doobie Brothers — we can’t get enough of “Black Water” — it’s hard to construct a set list.

However, it looks like the band has settled on one they like quite a bit that pays homage to their impressive catalog.

Take a look below to see what the band played at most shows on tour in 2022.

01.) “Nobody” 02.) “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)” (Kim Weston cover) 03.) “Here to Love You” 04.) “Dependin’ on You” 05.) “Rockin’ Down the Highway” 06.) “You Belong to Me” 07.) “Easy” 08.) “South City Midnight Lady” 09.) “Clear as the Driven Snow” 10.) “It Keeps You Runnin'” 11.) “Another Park, Another Sunday” 12.) “Eyes of Silver” 13.) “Better Days” 14.) “Don’t Ya Mess With Me” 15.) “Real Love” 16.) “World Gone Crazy” 17.) “Minute by Minute” 18.) “Without You” 19.) “Jesus Is Just Alright” (The Art Reynolds Singers cover) 20.) “What a Fool Believes” (Kenny Loggins cover) 21.) “Long Train Runnin'” 22.) “China Grove”

23.) “Black Water” 24.) “Takin’ It to the Streets” 25.) “Listen to the Music”

The above set list was courtesy of Set List FM ; their site features an archive of all Doobie Brothers concerts dating all the way back to a February 1971 gig at Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, CA, USA.

Doobie Brothers band members

For the first time in 25 years, the founding Doobie Brothers have been reunited.

The San Jose-based band today consists of lead singer Michael McDonald and guitarists om Johnston, Pat Simmons and John McFee.

That’s not the whole band though.

These days, the core quartet are joined by touring musicians John Cowan (bass, vocals), Marc Russo (saxophones), Ed Toth (drums), and Marc Quiñones (percussion).

The Doobie Brothers Replacing Steely Dan as Opening Act for Eagles’ Final 2023 Tour Dates

by Matt Friedlander November 15, 2023, 4:30 am

The Eagles will finish off the 2023 leg of their Long Goodbye farewell tour with three shows… November 14, in Lexington, Kentucky, and a November 17-18 stand in St. Paul, Minnesota. However, instead of Steely Dan opening the concerts as originally announced, The Doobie Brothers will be serving as the support act for the dates .

Videos by American Songwriter

As previously reported, Steely Dan initially had been announced as the opening act for the Eagles’ entire Long Goodbye Tour, but because of unspecified health issues that frontman Donald Fagen has been experiencing, the Dan hasn’t played any of the last nine shows on the trek.

[RELATED: The Eagles Add Second Shows to Four 2024 Tour Stops; Doobie Brothers to Open Band’s Next Two Concerts]

A series of fill-in acts has been supporting the Eagles on their dates since Steely Dan’s last appearance, on September 20, with The Doobie Brothers initially signing on last week to open the Eagles’ shows on November 7 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and November 9 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Late last week, it was announced that The Doobies also would support the Eagles at the Lexington concert, and now the veteran rockers have confirmed that they’ll be performing at the St. Paul gigs as well.

Prior to The Doobie Brothers’ stint as fill-in opener, Sheryl Crow, Steve Miller Band, Eagles touring member Vince Gill, and Tedeschi Trucks Band all stepped in for Steely Dan as the support act at various shows.

The Eagles are scheduled to launch a 2024 leg of their Long Goodbye Tour on January 5 in Inglewood, California. Next year’s trek currently features 21 dates, and as of now, Steely Dan is still slated to open the shows.

Shortly before joining the Eagles tour, The Doobie Brothers wrapped up a 2023 Canadian leg of their 50th anniversary headlining trek with an October 28 concert in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Since May, the band has been performing without its co-founding singer/guitarist Tom Johnston , who is recovering from back surgery.

Tickets will be available through  Stubhub  where orders are 100% guaranteed through Stubhub’s FanProtect program.

The Doobie Brothers are a rock band from the USA. They have sold over 40 million albums worldwide throughout their career, and have been active for five decades. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004.

John Hartman arrived in California in 1969 with the hopes of meeting Skip Spence of Moby Grape. Spence introduced Hartman to singer-songwriter Tom Johnston and the two musicians later became the engine behind The Doobie Brothers. They began by calling their band, “Pud” and went through a few line up changes sometimes including Skip Spence. It was in 1970 when they met Dave Shogren and another singer songwriter called Patrick Simmons, who had really made a name for himself in the local scene, but he really worked well alongside the line up that was beginning to form. Playing all over Northern California earned them a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1971.

It was over the next five years that they would become an international hit, with their sophomore album “Toulouse Street” released July 1972, going Platinum in the US and charting in Australia and New Zealand as well. “The Captain and Me”, released in March 1973, followed suit but this time going 2x Multi-Platinum. A similar pattern happened over the next couple of years in the form of “What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits” and “Stampede” both being top 4 albums in the US, and then in 1976, along came soulful power house, Michael McDonald. Under a contract to release an album in 1976, the Doobies were in a difficult situation where their main songwriter was unavailable so they turned to McDonald and Porter for material. With this request came the album “Takin’ It to the Streets” which was released on March 19th 1976. With the success of this album seeing it make it to number 8 in the Pop Albums Chart, The Doobie Brothers asked McDonald if he’d like to continue working with them for their next record. Fast forward a couple of successful albums to 1979, which is when they released an album called “Minute by Minute”, and on that album featured a song called “What a Fool Believes”, written by McDonald and Kenny Loggins. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 14th 1979, and received Grammy Awards in 1980 for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

Over the course of the next couple of years, The Doobies embarked on world tours but unfortunately due to many issues between band members, exhaustion and disillusion, there were no original members left. Michael McDonald was ready for a solo career, so the band elected to disband. Of course, the band briefly disbanded and effectively hibernated for the next four years before making a comeback in the form of an album called “Cycles” which was released on May 17th 1989, this time without McDonald.

Live reviews

I enjoyed the show. It was what I expected, having seen them several times. It is an emotional connection for me. It . will always be my travelling music. I was married on Valentines Day of 1973, and we drove from Vsncouver down USA 101. We had an 8 track at the time, and it was part of our driving music. It makes me very noststalgic for a happy, and innocent time. Though I lost my husbsnd it was the music of that time. We selected the Doobies, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, America, C.S N.Y. ,Steve Miller Band, Yes, E.LO. E L.P. Bob Seeger, as the core of our "tunes" We also had select Jazz tapes as my husband was a jazz musician. Those tunes always return me to a time of experiencing some of the happiest times of my life. It was a time for discovery, adventure, and being in a state of bliss. I had never travelled past Seattle, and the Oregon coast was all and more than what I had hoped for. I remember running down the beach, and the wind made my sweater into a following cape. The waves broke on the beach, and this roiled up a seafoam. I recall pictures of me standing on a rock with this foam surrounding me, and it looked like snow. When we left Vancouver there had been s a late snow on the ground, and this appeared ss dnow in the photos we had taken. (We had to get films developed in those days). It was an unexpected discovery when we eagerly looked over our photos, taken with a Kodak camera I got when I was 12. It worked very well, and I quite miss it. The best part of our trip for me was the feeling of freedom, and whole and really loved for the first time in my life, and accepted for who I was. The trip was so powerful for me, and us, as best friends and partners. It was a discovery of landscapes, beauty of nature, a security found in each other, and a liberation on many levels, and a new chapter in life, which, I have never forgotten. Those glorious songs trigger a palpable response, that has transcended time for me. It was a ticket to a show and a special time in my life. I had those photos taken ftom me, "but the song remains the same " to me, and the music holds my memories.

Absolutely awesome concert! They are tighter than ever and still play very energetically. They obviously enjoy the music very much, This is not a job... it's a joy! I'm a musician and there are times in your career that you just don't want to play another note. You don't even want to listen to music. Although the road can make you weary, the days of agony are over for the Doobs. They do it because they love it. They have big hearts. It's charity, in fact, that kept them together. May they continue to play the music that will always sell out any venue they care to play. Hot dogs, apple pie, baseball and of course, The Doobie Brothers! The Doobies have always been environmentally conscientious and patriotic. The concert was preceded by a Pledge of Allegiance, and a ceremony honoring our men and women in uniform. This included a moment of silence for all those Missing In Action or Prisoners of War, and the singing of The National Anthem. One of the best concerts I have ever seen. The musicians are still awesome and played some great music. I would go see them again anytime.

I have loved the Doobie Brothers since the 70s & they didn't disappoint in 2017!! They still look & sound as wonderful (if not better)than they did back in the day! Touring with Chicago, this concert was one of the best I have seen so far this year! The only downer for me was the crowd at the Austin 360 Amphitheater. Yes, we are all older than we were back in the 70s & 80s, but show the artist, that is performing for you, that you STILL LOVE their music! They want to see people enjoying, dancing, singing their songs. You SIT @ a symphony, NOT A ROCK N ROLL CONCERT!!!! Austin, TX is suppose to be the music capital of the world, but Saturday night I felt like I was sitting at an old folks home! Get up & enjoy the music, you never know if this will be the last time they tour & perform! If you have the opportunity to jam with The Doobie Brothers & Chicago ~ GO!!! You WILL NOT be disappointed!! FANTASTIC SHOW!!

Bluesfest Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers

The Doobie Brothers were up first. With their mix of southern rock, country, folk, R&B and soul, the current lineup rotated from three guitars and bass, to acoustic guitars, harmonica, electric violin, along with the excellent sax playing of Marc Russo, keyboards of Little Feet’s Bill Payne complementing the vocal harmonies of Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston and John Mcfee that defines The Doobie Brothers music. All the classics were played. Starting with Jesus is Just Alright, Rockin’ Down the Highway, Take Me in Your Arms, Taking to the Streets, Black Water, Long Train Runnin’, China Grove and my personal favourite, Clear as the Driven Snow and finishing with Listen to The Music. By the end of the set, everyone was on there feet and dancing…Brilliant evening

When we saw Don Felder being advertised with the Doobies I misunderstood and thought he was playing in their band. Well he turned out to be the jewel of the show, not only for the quality of his work, but the audio level that he worked at. You could hear the words and the distinction in the solos. No one drowned out the other. The Doobies were garbled and played way too loud for this venue. We left early with our ears ringing. Very disappointed. The venue Austin City Limits at Moody Theatre was good with excellent visibility and good acoustics. We will go back to this venue as we had cheaper seats in the balcony, but could see and hear well.I would advise against the pricey seats in the orchestra as many fans stood up during the performance. Who wants to pay big and then be inconvenienced?

Doobie Brothers is one of my favourite all time

Bands and I have come to the conclusion that I like the music produced when Michael McDonald was part of the band. I am not a fan of the highway rock and roll, folk or country and western style music

playef in Sydney on 13 April 2017. It is what it is

Playlist. What made the experience almost intolerable was that the sound produced was awful. Either the engineer fell asleep on the controls or was hearing impaired. Wasn't the venue as Santana who followed had great sound.

Honestly one of the best nights of my life, never thought I'd ever get to see Doobie Brothers live on stage, still seems like a dream. The night was amazing, the band was electrifying, the lights and musical performance were mesmerising, the energy and charisma of the guy's had us the audience hooked from the very first note. I've always had their CD's, but to hear them singing and watch their performance on stage is truly exceptional, if they ever come back to Glasgow I would love to see them again, OUTSTANDING, X

The Doobie Brothers were in Seattle last Saturday for the Northwest Classic concert series. They opened up for the Eagles, but the Doobie's should have head lined the show. Their vocals and their musicianship were in fine form. This is the best the band has sounded in a few years.

Safeco Stadium held all 33,000+ of us safe and in a fun environment. No security issues... very peaceful crowd.

This was my 45th Doobie Brothers Concert... and it was one of their best shows! The boys know how to 'kick it'.

The band was truly excellent. The vocals were as great as they were when they started out. They have such distinctive and cool voices! The guitar playing was top notch and the sax player was excellent. Overall they were truly great. The Doovies opened for Steely Dan and the two acts together were awesome. This was a concert not to miss. I recommend this show to anyone at any age. In fact, I recommend it to a younger crowd to get a true education on two great long standing rock groups.

I have listened to the Doobie Brothers since a was in my teens. My dad was a gigantic fan and I guess it rubbed off on me also! My Dad passed on in 2007 and I inherited his automobile. While driving along one day on my commute to work, I looked in his CD compartment and found 3 Doobie Brothers CD'S! Now, whenever I drive Dad's car a part of him is sitting right next to me singing away! That is the closeness a Father & Daughter could ever hope for and it was helped along by the Doobie Brothers!

Some of my fondest musical memories came courtesy of the Doobie Brothers.  I still remember the episode of “What’s Happening!” where the boys got caught sneaking a tape recorder into one of the band’s concerts.  My high school kitchen band – that’s where we rehearsed – used to do a kick ass version of “China Grove.”  When he was younger, my son and his mother used to sing along to “Black Water” every day on the ride to school.  And I loved how almost every photo of Tom Johnston in the mid-70s showed him wearing a “Jaws” t-shirt!  The band went from being big to being HUGE once Michael McDonald came on board, with the band winning four Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year for “What a Fool Believes.”  Like most bands, the members eventually went their seperate ways and I’ve seen both the Doobies and Michael McDonald in the past.  But never todgether.  Until now!

doobies brothers tour 2023

Kicking off their amazing (24) song set with “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While),” the band took myself and a sold out Starlight Theater crowd on an amazing trip down memory lane.  The vocals were solid and the music was tight, as 50-years of music poured over the willing crowd who sang along at every chance.

doobies brothers tour 2023

Other well known songs, including “You Belong to Me,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” and “Takin’ It to the Streets” were mixed in with great album cuts like “South City Midnight Lady” and “Eyes of Silver” kept the crowd up on their feet and dancing all night.  Other highlights included a rousing version of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” with McDonald at his most soulful and a great cover of Steely Dan’s “Pretzel Logic.”

Besides founding member Patrick Simmons, along with long time Doobie’s McDonald and John McFee, the band included long time touring members John Cowan on bass and the amazing Marc Russo on the saxophone.

One Reply to “Concert Review: The Doobie Brothers – 50th Anniversary Tour”

Readers, I errantly identified Patrick Simmons as Tom Johnston. This was pointed out to me by a reader who went on to call my review “false” because I failed to mention that Tom Johnston was not on the tour due to health reasons. It was not my intention to mislead anyone, just a simple mistake. The review remains the same…it was a great show!

doobies brothers tour 2023

Doobie Brothers star goes from San Jose State to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

T om Johnston still sounds great on the microphone after more than a half century of rocking with San Jose’s legendary Doobie Brothers.

“Practice,” Johnston says from his home in Marin County. “To me, that’s the key to it. I don’t mean only when you are rehearsing to go on a tour. You’ve got to do it when you are off, too. You’ve just got to keep your voice in shape. It’s a muscle like anything else. And if you let it atrophy, then it’s really hard to bring it back.”

Johnston is getting ready to showcase those vocals once again. The Doobies will hit the road later this year for a 38-city national tour that includes stops at Wheatland’s Toyota Amphitheatre on June 20 and Concord Pavilion on June 22.

The 75-year-old vocalist and guitarist credits the band’s road work as vital to its longevity. “Touring a lot is one of the big (things) that keep everyone aware that you are around,” he says. “That’s one of the things that keeps us going.”

Beyond a full slate of gigs, the Doobies also plan to release a new album this year, the band’s second studio album in roughly three years. Many of the Doobies’ contemporaries have pretty much given up on putting out new albums, preferring to just bank upon decades-old fan favorites. Yet, Johnston says it is important for the Doobies to keep recording.

“It keeps the band fresh,” he says. “You play new stuff in the live show, and the crowd likes it. I mean, it’s not going to be something that they are ready to sing along with like one of the big hits. But — who knows? — maybe it could end up being one.”

The Doobies have more than a fair share of big hits, including such gems as “China Grove,” “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “Listen to the Music,” “Black Water,” “Rockin’ Down the Highway” and “Jesus Is Just Alright.”

Those songs remain staples on classic rock radio many decades later. Even Johnston can’t tell you what it is about these songs that continues to charm both old and new listeners.

“I wish I could tell you what that is. We are extremely fortunate,” he says. “The songs strike a chord with people, both rhythmically and lyrically, and they like singing along with whatever the chorus is.”

Johnston has certainly witnessed massive crowd sing-alongs whenever the Doobies — Johnston, vocalist-guitarist Patrick Simmons, vocalist-keyboardist Michael McDonald, multi-instrumentalist John McFee and several touring members — unleash the greatest hits in concert.

“People always know those songs,” he says. “They always stand up, singing them back to you, and it’s amazing. There are just a lot of songs that fit in that mold. We are very lucky. It’s not something where you sit down and say, ‘I’m going to write a hit that everybody is going to love 50 years from now.’ That’s not the way it works. It’s that you happen to walk in the right door.”

Johnston definitely walked in the right door when he first left home in Visalia in 1968 to study graphic design at San Jose State. He laid the foundation for his music career at his first home here. That house at 285 S. 12th St. is now a historic landmark .

“Other musicians were over there all the time. We were always jamming in the basement,” Johnston says. “It was kind of a music center for San Jose — a great place to be at that age at that time.”

One of his roommates was John Hartman, who became the Doobies’ original drummer. The two met Patrick Simmons, a graduate of San Jose’s Leigh High School, who certainly knew his way around the guitar.

“John and I watched him play with a band he was in — it was an acoustic thing — and we were kind of blown away,” Johnston remembers. “We thought he was a really great guitarist. He sang, and that was a plus. So, we asked him to come over and jam.”

Eventually, the jam turned into a band and with the addition of bassist Dave Shogren, the Doobie Brothers were born. The group began gigging around the area and soon drew the interest of Warner Bros., which signed the Doobies to a deal. The band’s self-titled debut came out in the spring of 1971.

“It was all just — for lack of a better way of putting it — magical. It just kind of happened,” Johnston says. “The first album didn’t do a lot. The second album (1972’s ‘Toulouse Street’) took off with ‘Listen to the Music.’ And it just kept going.”

They hit double-platinum status with the back-to-back releases of “The Captain and Me” (1973) and “What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits” (1974), then saw  their fortunes zoom even higher with the triple-platinum success of 1978’s “Minute by Minute.” Along the way, they’d showcase a variety of styles and genres in their music.

“We were an eclectic bunch,” Johnston says. “We all had rock ’n’ roll roots, but Pat was into finger-picking and guys like Doc Watson. I was more R&B as well as the blues. So, we mixed that all together, if you will. We just wrote songs, and they came out sounding the way they sound, because you’d have those various influences on each tune, and it just sort of happened.”

The Doobies were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. The nod came after years of eligibility and much debate among fans as to whether the Doobies would someday get the call. Yet, the band members never really joined that discussion.

“We didn’t ever sit around and talk about it a lot,” Johnston says. “In fact, we didn’t really talk about it at all. Occasionally, it would get batted around with management. But we most always kept our head down and kept working.”

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
