Day 1-2: Tashkent Day 3-4: Nomadic yurt-Ayaz Kala-Khiva Day 5-6: Bukhara Day 7-9: Samarkand – Shakhrisabz-Tashkent Day 10: Tashkent Departure

Day 1, Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Evening arrival in Tashkent at Tashkent International Airport.

After airport procedures you will be met outside by your escort guide and will transfer to the boutique hotel located in the heart of the capital city.

Day 2. Tashkent

This morning includes the Amir Timur Museum (dedicated to all things Tamerlane!)  and Mustakillik (Independence) Square before a Welcome lunch. Then we shall explore the ancient part of Tashkent: the Khasret Imam, Sheik Tellya Complex  and the 2000 year-old Chor-Su Bazaar and enjoy the bustle of the market.  Its a major food hall, with bakeries, fresh cheese and produce sellers, wedding sweets, dried fruits and nuts, meats of all kinds... There's the Nature museum and botanical garden, the Earthquake memorial and the Abul Kasim craft center in an old medresseh. We'll ride the metro and visit the train museum for the special tour. Enjoy the night panorama of Tashkent.

Day 3. Tashkent-Urgench-Ayaz Kala

Morning flight to Urgench to drive to Ayaz Kala located in the desert of Kizil Kum. Bring you sunscreen and hats! Upon arrival we'll visit the Ayaz Kala, mgical site. Have a picnic lunch near our yurt camp or Lake. Enjoy a camel ride and dinner under the stars. The sunset is here breathtaking, a photographer's dream.

Day 4. Ayaz Kala-Khiva

After sunrise photography and hiking we'll take a sightseeing drive to Khiva. One of the most popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Silk Road, this "living museum" has a traffic-free historic core and adobe walls that change color with the daylight.

This fairy-tale city has some of the best preserved historical architecture in the Old City including the Ichan Kala: the Ata–Darvaza gates, the majestic, blue-tiled Kalta Minar tower, the Mohammad Aminkhan and Khodja Islam medressehs, the Kunya Ark (Ancient Citadel), Tash Hauli Palace (with peek into the palace's harem-quarters), the bazaar in housed in the old caravanserai (traditional inn for travelling merchants - the doorways are high enough for an elephant), and the cool, peaceful Juma mosque with its 200 beautifully carved wooden pillars. Evening in Khiva is magical with the city's minarets silhouetted against the starlit sky. Make sure to get up onto the city wall for the views and try the local dill-flavored noodles.

Day 5.  Khiva- Bukhara

Scenic drive to Bukhara city through the Kizil kum desert. WE may also take a high speed train to Bukhara. Picnic on the road and explore near the Amu  Darya River Upon arrival in Bukhara you will be welcomed at the family friendly boutique hotel located in the center of ancient city.

Bukhara, once the intellectual center of the Islamic world can trace its origins to the 6th century BCE. One of Central Asia's holiest cities, behind the ancient adobe walls, the backstreets are lined with spice markets, artisan and carpet shops, and the homes of families who have lived here for generations. Enjoy sipping a green tea and watching the social life from under the shady mulberry trees surrounding the pool - the traditional heart of the city, where tea and gossip reign, artisans sell their handicrafts and at night the colored lights give a festive air to the local dance troupe. The Uzbek tea ceremony is a formal and graceful ritual, poured three times from the pot into a ceramic cup allowing the full flavor and aroma of the tea to develop. While green tea is the standard, there is a wide variety of black and herbal varieties.

Day 6. Bukhara

This morning after the puppet show we continue on sightseeing to the Kalyan Minaret, part of the Poi-Kalyon complex which dates back to 1127, a fitting symbol of old Bukhara. When Genghis Khan invaded he left only the minaret standing as legend says that he was struck by its beauty (or that as he looked up his hat fell off, both are good stories! The city's subdued desert hues lend centuries-old buildings their own exotic air. The Fortress Ark defended its rulers and their servants over the centuries while some sixty caravanserais could be found within the city for traders and travelers. Try on traditional outfits at the national costume exhibit in the former merchant's house of Fayzullo Khodjaev. Wind your way through the city's ancient covered trade domes of the money changers, hat, and puppet sellers, as well as carpet, jewelry and embroidery merchants. Pick up your Bukhara doppi cap here or a pair of Bukhara's unique bird-shaped embroidery scissors.

We will also enjoy the Uzbek hospitality - participate in cooking with local people and enjoy a meal together.

Day 7.  Bukhara-Samarkand

After seeing the four, blue-domed minarets of the unique Chor Minor complex, we'll finish at the Sitorai Mohi-Khossa or Palace of Moon and Stars.

The afternoon begins the "Golden Road to Samarkand" and the comfortable high speed train whisks you there in 90 minutes. Enjoy your free time in the magnificent city.

Day 8.  Samarkand

Discover ancient  Samarkand starting at Registan Square, one of the most recognized landmarks of the ancient world and a destination for holy pilgrims from around the world. Surrounded on three sides by the majestic porticoes of its medressehs it's the site of world-class music festivals and national celebrations for Navruz , the Persian New Year in March. We'll enjoy a full day of "monumental" exploration here beginning in Registan Square, with its soaring porticoes, stunning decoration, and fabulous history. Within the old city are the remains of the 15th century observatory of the astronomer Ulugbek, and the tomb of the Prophet Daniel.

Continue sightseeing at the Shahi Zinda Ensemble, the ancient necropolis, a veritable museum of tile artistry under the open sky. A series of 11 mausoleums line a medieval street, offering a first-hand, up-close lesson in Islamic decoration, leading to the edge of what was ancient Afrosiab. Make a stop at one of the oldest craft center in Konigli village at Meros paper mill (founded by Mukhtarov brothers)where they still make  traditional mulberry paper.  Participate in papermaking master class. Meet several generations of regional craftspeople.

Day 9. Samarkand-Shakhrisabz-Samarkand

Sightseeing day drive to Shahrisabz (150 km.), the birthplace of Amir Temur. Visit ancient ruins at the Summer Residence "Ak-Saroy” , the remains of the towering gates,  the Mosque Khazrati Imom, and blue-tiled Kok Gumbaz. You  may enjoy the spectacular Shakhrisabz mountain hike before returning to  Samarkand.

The high speed train takes us back to Tashkent for a Farewell dinner and overnight at the Tashkent  hotel.

Fam Trip to Uzbekistan with Flo Tours Difference

Uzbekistan is a country located in Central Asia, known for its rich history, culture, and stunning Islamic architecture. The country is situated between the Amu Darya (Oxus) and Syr-Darya (Jaxartes) Rivers and has a severe continental climate that is dry and hot in summer and cool and wet in winter. The country is famous for its majestic, tilting madrassas, which are a near-overload of majolica, azure mosaics, and vast, well-proportioned spaces. The country has recently opened its doors to the world, and since doing so, this off-the-beaten-path destination is gradually becoming more and more popular with tourists.

Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand are three of the most famous ancient cities in Central Asia. Samarkand is the largest of the three and has been known for about 2700 years, while Bukhara has been around for about 2500 years. Khiva , on the other hand, has a history of about 1200 years. Samarkand was devastated by Genghis Khan and rebuilt from the ground in the 13th century, Bukhara blossomed around 1,300 years ago, and Khiva was an ordinary town until the 16th century. The three cities are treasure troves overflowing with more ancient monuments than you can handle. Samarkand is known for its majestic Registan, while Bukhara is an entire historical site on its own. Khiva is small enough to navigate on foot and has a stunningly integral environment of old adobe houses, including mosques, madrasahs, minarets, mausoleums, and khan’s palaces.

Exceptional local experiences

Why travel if not for the experience? To meet people, see things and do things that you can’t see and meet and do at home? We’ll start with the highlights, but when the big tour groups hop back on their coach, our local guides will help you find a more unique, personal experience. That little hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Istanbul, wine tasting with vintners in Tblisi or campfire stories with South Africa’s locals – immersive experiences that span over 30 countries around the world.

Value for Money

Some people subscribe to the theory that, if it’s comfortable it isn’t an adventure. Not us. We’re all for taking the hassles and uncertainties out of group travel. From first contact to the final farewell dinner, you’re in safe hands. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a premium style of adventure. Your tour cost covers:

  • All included sightseeing and entrance costs
  • All transport and quality, hand-picked accommodation
  • A highly experienced Flo Tours tour guide
  • Many meals (as indicated)
  • Additional specialist guides and porters where needed
  • Airport arrival transfer for most itineraries (as indicated)
  • 24-hour emergency support from our local teams

Our accommodation is hand-picked by our destination experts for its quality, character, amenities and central location. So your stay is not only memorable, but convenient. This year we’re introducing something a bit special: our feature stays. Each of our tours includes at least one stand out property – places that offer a deeper level of cultural immersion or unique perspective of a destination. It could be a heritage stay in a Rajasthan Palace, a wilderness lodge in the Sri Lankan jungle, a splash of luxury in a Moroccan Riad, or a night in stilt cottages over Myanmar’s Inle Lake.

Award winning local guides

We learnt long ago that the best way to see a destination is with the people who live there. That’s why we pioneered the concept of employing local guides: expertly trained, and with a depth and breadth of knowledge you won’t find anywhere else. Want to know the secrets of Tibetan Buddhism? Where to find the best kebab in Istanbul? Or what makes a Canchanchara so special? Your guide, and their local connections, have the answer.

Moving around with ease

We like to travel in small, private vehicles to reduce travel times. It means we can reach the spots that big buses can’t (ever tried squeezing a 60-seat coach through the lanes of Old Delhi?) Most of our transport is private, air-conditioned and comfortable; it’s a more convenient way to travel, and it lets us avoid the queues and the crowds on public transport. A smoother ride, and more time to explore: who said adventure had to be hard?

family tour uzbekistan

When you travel with Flo Tours, many meals are included in your trip cost, so you don’t have to think about making dinner plans – it’s all planned for you. While bigger tour groups struggle to get seats in backstreet bodegas and tiny bars, our expert local leaders – through their trusted connections – can snare you a table in the best (and most delicious) of locations.

8 of the best things to do with kids in Uzbekistan

Experience the Silk Road on a child-friendly tour of Uzbekistan © Chekunov Aleksandr / Shutterstock

If you are contemplating traveling the Silk Road with kids, Uzbekistan should be the first destination on your list.

Not only does Uzbekistan have an exciting, eclectic combination of things to see and do, but it is very child friendly. Uzbekistanis like to travel with their extended families — often three generations together — so hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions cater for everyone, young and old.

Uzbekistan’s summer heat and long distances can be a challenge, but the country’s high-speed trains have AC and it’s easy to plan an itinerary based around shorter steps. Here's what you need to know about family travel in Uzbekistan.

Two boys splash in a small water fountain in front of a domed and tiled mosque

Is Uzbekistan good for kids?

Uzbekistanis love children and take their kids with them everywhere, whether it is to a festival, a historic site or a high-end restaurant. Visitors to the country will find it easy to do the same. People will go out of their way to accommodate your needs, including allowing you to skip the line or helping you find a quiet spot for a change or feed.

You’ll have no trouble pushing a stroller around most city centers: Uzbekistan’s streets and squares are well-paved, and as petty crime is almost non-existent, you can leave a buggy outside without worrying. At historic sites, a baby carrier will be more convenient, as you’ll usually have steps to climb or uneven slopes to scramble down.

Where is best in Uzbekistan for kids?

The best places to see in Uzbekistan with children are the country’s Unesco-listed Silk Road cities , but the dramatic landscapes – from deserts to mountain ranges – offer stiff competition. In fact, it is this wide variety of sights and activities that makes Uzbekistan so child friendly.

Start in the capital, Tashkent , ride the high-speed train to Samarkand and Bukhara , then venture out into the Chimgan Mountains to ski. For extra adventure, visit the Kyzylkum Desert for a yurt stay, or head up onto the Ustyurt Plateau to see the Aral Sea.

A couple of puppeteers perform with large puppets in the street of a city

Best things to do in Uzbekistan with babies and toddlers

Go to a puppet show.

Puppetry has a long history in Uzbekistan. The Republican Puppet Theatre in Tashkent was built to look like a fairy-tale castle, and Bukhara and Nukus both have professional puppet theaters. In Khiva , puppeteers roam the streets of the Ichon-Qala with almost life-size puppets. Puppeteers typically use a mixture of sock puppets and marionettes to tell popular stories, many of which will be familiar to international audiences.

Recharge in gardens and parks

For a country predominantly covered by desert, Uzbekistan is surprisingly green. Every city has well-kept parks where local families come to relax in the evenings and at weekends.

Storks, ducks, and peacocks wander free in the Japanese Garden in Tashkent and are always grateful to be fed. The Ak Serai, Timur’s palace in Shakhrisabz , is surrounded by graceful gardens, and Bukhara’s Samani Park offers a good balance of historic monuments and safe spaces for little ones to run about.

A round white yurt tent in a desert area with a large camel in front

Best things to do in Uzbekistan with older kids

Storm a fortress.

There are fortresses all across Uzbekistan, dating from the 1st millennium BCE to the 19th century. Many of them are in good condition, so kids can race along the battlements, march through gates, and climb towers, imagining themselves as soldiers in attacking armies or as citizens under siege.

The greatest concentration of forts is in Karakalpakstan, but don’t overlook the Ark in Bukhara (whose dungeons have a fascinatingly gruesome past), or the Nurata Fortress in Navoi Region, said to have been built by Alexander the Great.

Dive into history in Khiva’s Ichon-Qala

The entirety of Khiva’s Old City is a vast open-air museum, and it’s very family friendly. The monuments – minarets, madrassas, mosques, and mausoleums –  of the Ichon-Qala are magnificent, and the streets and squares are a constant source of entertainment. You might pause to snap selfies with a camel, stumble across a wrestling bout, or suddenly be surrounded by a troupe of wandering musicians or puppeteers.

Stay in a yurt for the ultimate stargazing experience

Three things epitomize the Silk Road – deserts, camels, and yurts – and Uzbekistan offers all three. The best yurt camps are near Aydarkul, but there are also good options for yurt stays near Bukhara, in Urgench, and across Karakalpakstan. Combine a night in a yurt with a camel ride, a bonfire, and some unforgettable stargazing – kids will love it.

Cool down at a water park

Temperatures soar in Uzbekistan in summer, and one of the best ways to cool down (whilst still having fun) is to spend a few hours at a water park. Tashkent’s Aqua Park is the largest, with multiple flumes, wave pools, and hot tubs. The Aqua Park in Namangan even has open-air discos on summer evenings.

A child on a sledge heads down a slope dotted with people playing in the snow

Best things to do in Uzbekistan with tweens and teenagers

Learn to ski .

From December to April, Uzbekistan is Central Asia’s premier destination for winter sports . The country’s top ski resort, Amirsoy , opened near Tashkent in 2019, with international-standard infrastructure and equipment. Lift passes, kit hire, and ski lessons in Uzbekistan are a fraction of the cost of those in European resorts – so, a great way to keep kids of all ages entertained.

Visit the Aral Sea

Just getting to the Aral Sea is an adventure: the desert landscapes are vast, much of the drive is off-road, and you need a rugged 4WD vehicle. But the challenge is part of the appeal, and the journey takes in skeleton ships, abandoned communities, canyons, and even an otherworldly salt flat. It is a prime opportunity to discuss the impact of humankind on the natural environment, and to see evidence of climate change firsthand.

Planning tips

Uzbekistan Airways , the national airline, offers discounted tickets for babies and children and lets you take foldable buggies onboard. These policies apply on both domestic and international flights, so families will find it easy to get around by air.

The Afrosiyob high-speed train links Tashkent with Samarkand, Navoi and Bukhara, and the line will be extended to reach Khiva and Nukus by the end of 2026. Not only are the trains fast and affordable, but you also get guaranteed seats, free snacks, AC, and plenty of space to run around. Book tickets online via the official e-ticket portal .

Bring your kids’ medications, processed foods, and diapers with you; baby products are widely available in local supermarkets, but the brands may be unfamiliar and not meet the quality you’re used to. Restaurants in Uzbekistan rarely have children’s menus, but the food is not spicy and there’s always plenty of choice.

If your kids turn their noses up at local specialties such as plov (rice cooked with meat and vegetables) and shashlik (kebabs), don’t worry –  it’s easy to find bread, soups and salads, plus bite-size dumplings known as manti, spaghetti-like laghman, and chuchvare, a button-shaped pasta. Strawberries, cherries, apricots and melons are plentiful, especially in the summer months.

It's possible to plan an independent trip here, but due to some of the difficulties of planning along with more challenging transportation options, it's often easier to book a tour. So, a tour in Uzbekistan is likely worth the cost for most travelers. It might be too hard to plan everything you want to do on your own in Uzbekistan, so booking a tour lets the professionals handle all of the transportation, accommodations, activities, and meals while you just sit back and relax.

Depending on the specific tour's destinations, level of luxury, and duration, organized tours in Uzbekistan can sometimes offer more cost-effective options compared to traveling independently. It is important to recognize that each tour and independent trip is individualized, so it's not always fair to make direct cost comparisons. Tour providers typically bundle all the necessary components at a competitive price, often comparable to independently planned trips of similar luxury. On average, a tour in Uzbekistan costs $182 per day, with many tours priced below this average. The price range for tours in Uzbekistan varies from $90 to $5,650. When comparing costs to independent travel in Uzbekistan, keep in mind that most guided organized tour packages include knowledgeable guides, food, accommodations, transportation, entry tickets, and much more. Although it may be challenging to make a blanket comparison between tours and independent travel for every individual, ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included in a tour package and conduct thorough research on the costs of independent travel in Uzbekistan so that your comparisons are all-inclusive.

Group Tours vs. Independent Travel in Uzbekistan

When it comes to deciding between an organized tour package and independent travel, many travelers find themselves at a crossroads. However, in Uzbekistan during 2024 or 2025, the abundance of enticing deals and sales makes organized tour packages an attractive proposition. These packages offer comprehensive benefits, including accommodations, transportation, entry tickets, meals, and other essential travel elements, ensuring excellent value for money. Additionally, the presence of knowledgeable guides provides valuable insights, while the convenience of pre-planned itineraries brings peace of mind. Conversely, independent travel allows for greater flexibility and control over one's journey, allowing for adjustments to schedules and budgets. It also offers the freedom to immerse oneself in local cultures and explore hidden gems that may not be included in organized tour packages.

What are the benefits of a package tour to Uzbekistan?

Traveling with a tour offers numerous advantages. Firstly, the unparalleled convenience of having all aspects of your trip arranged allows you to unwind and enjoy the experience. With transportation, accommodations, and activities meticulously planned out, there's no need to worry about finding a place to stay, figuring out logistics, or potentially missing out on any attractions. Additionally, the all-inclusive nature of most tour prices provides the reassurance of knowing the exact cost of your trip upfront, eliminating any surprises. Benefits of a tour include

  • fixed budget
  • not having to plan
  • reliable service and schedule
  • eliminating risks
  • knowledgeable guides
  • comfortable amenities
  • meeting other like-minded travelers

What are the benefits of independent travel in Uzbekistan?

The benefits of independent travel are freedom, control, and flexibility. By traveling on your own, you can decide where to stay, what to see, when to eat, and how to get around. By making all of the decisions yourself, you can also have more control over your budget, schedule, itinerary, and level of luxury while traveling. Other benefits include:

  • flexible schedules
  • flexible budget
  • in-depth cultural opportunities
  • off-the-beaten-path destinations

When planning your tour to Uzbekistan, it is wise to make your booking well in advance, preferably a few months in advance or even earlier. While it is common for many people to book their tours up to a year ahead, from our experience, reserving your spot around 6 to 9 months before the departure date is often far enough ahead. It is important to keep in mind that many tours tend to fill up quickly, so booking early ensures that you have a place on the trip. Additionally, booking early can result in significant cost savings, as tour companies often provide early booking sales and discounted prices. However, some tour companies may occasionally offer last-minute discounts for tours that are not fully booked. Yet, waiting for such discounts carries the risk of not securing a spot on a fully booked tour.

When considering tours in Uzbekistan, it's important to keep in mind that they can vary in size, accommodating anywhere from 4 to 25 people. On average, a tour consists of 12 people. However, it's important to note that factors such as price and quality are not solely determined by the number of participants.

When planning a tour to Uzbekistan, it is generally recommended to plan for around 9 days, as this is the average duration of most organized tour packages. The duration of tours in Uzbekistan can vary, ranging from 2 to 15 days, or sometimes even longer. Although longer tours may have a higher price, their cost per day decreases. Additionally, longer tours offer the opportunity to visit multiple destinations at a comfortable pace, making them a more worthwhile investment.

Where do group tours go in Uzbekistan?

Some of the most popular stops in Uzbekistan include Samarkand, Tashkent, Bukhara, Khiva, Urgench, Shahrisabz, Nurota, and Nukus. These destinations offer a nice overview of the country.

What tour and travel companies offer packages to Uzbekistan?

Plenty of companies are offering package tours to and around Uzbekistan, but not all of them are the same. Some of the companies are large international operators that have solid reputations. Other companies are smaller and offer more unique and locally-based insights into the country. With larger companies, tours are rarely cancelled and customer service is generally high. With smaller companies, you're more likely to have a trip that gives you more local and personable experiences.

The companies offering the most tours in Uzbekistan are Zamin Travel , Steppe and sky travel , Global Connect , Steppe Journeys , and Silk Road Destinations . All of them tend to offer quality trips with high guest ratings.

What is the best tour company offering trips to Uzbekistan?

Intrepid Travel is the tour company with the highest rated tours in Uzbekistan. They offer quality service and exciting trips, and have earned plenty of positive reviews from previous customers.
