There are three establishments that offer Margaret River horse-back tours; we have visited two, The Humble Horse and Jesters Flat .  The Horse Resort is on our bucket list for a future tour.  We hope our impressions help to give you a useful guide.

Our Jesters Flat, Margaret River Horse Riding Experience

Jesters Flat is located in the charming locality of Rosa Brook, some 20 minutes out of Margaret River town.  We had lunch at the Colonial Brewing Co. before heading to the horse ride.  We allowed plenty of time to get there and then meet the lovely Australian stock horses for which they are famous.

plenty of riding equipment at horseride jesters flat

On arrival at Jester’s Flat in the locality of Rosa Brook, we were first were sized for helmet and riding boots (if you need them); you also had the option to bring your own.  Then onto meet the horses.  The horses were carefully selected after you entered your weight and height as you booked.  But even after arrival some horses were switched out for others as the riding instructors looked at the riders.  The guides also asked some ability questions so you can be best suited to your horse.  There where barely any ponies apposed to many other facilities you will visit.

The bubbly instructors clearly cared for the horses, and they were obviously first priority.  By no mean where these horses “push button ponies”.  You could tell these horses weren’t just walked in the same loop for their whole life.  And, they weren’t drained of character like some other trail horses I have met.  For example, when the spirited horse walked across the paddock their ears perked up and got excited. It was amazing how the guides seemed to know all of the horses so well, as well as explained their quirks.

The safety talk was one of the best talks I have had.  The ladies where very clear and made sure we where confident and treating the horses well before we left.  When we were out on the trail we stopped and had a second talk on trotting before we started.  The instructors would stop somebody if they thought they were hurting the horses back by flopping into the saddle, and I was so impressed that the comfort of the horses was paramount.  The best part was seeing how well the horses where treated.  Even though other facilities didn’t not love their horses, you could just tell how experienced this facility was.  I was very excited to see these were horses and not ponies.

The whole time I was at the homestead and out on the trail it was just lovely scenery; a truly beautiful ride.  We saw cattle, kangaroos and some gorgeous birds.  We were in a small group and the guides pointed many things out to us.  The bush was thick and beautiful.  We also went across paddocks in a loop, apart from a couple sections it was a slow relaxed ride.

Jesters Flat Homestead, Horse Riding Margaret River

Jesters Flat Homestead

For non-riders you will still have a lovely experience at Jesters Flat without riding.  The original homestead is decorated in Australian rustic “Country Style” chic, with old furniture, antiques, and complete with Drizabones hanging on the wall.  There are also loads of great books if you want to sit down and have a read.  For kids, there is a huge, elevated tree house with sand pit beneath and table and chair settings across an area of green grass with fairy lights hanging overhead.

Jesters Flat Homestead, Horse Riding Margaret River

Our younger children, who were not riding, had fun playing on the tree tire swing, running around in the bush, and also in the cute cubby house.  You can also go bushwalking andbird watching in the surrounding bushland of Margaret River.

There is a small store selling Jesters Flat merch and some very attractive Australian bush gear.

As non-riders it was great that we were able to see the riders getting their safety talk in the covered area.  We also got to watch them get onto their horses and their faces light up with joy as they headed off.

Jesters Flat Equestrian also has a small vineyard on site, producing premium Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.  The cellar door is open daily for wine tastings, from 10am to 4pm.

Horseriding in Margaret River – FAQs

What is the minimum age for horse riding in margaret river.

Each company has different conditions for each of their tours.  However, in general, 10 years and over is the minimum age.

Is there a weight restriction?

The maximum weight limit on horse rides is around 95kg.  If you are an extremely experienced rider some companies will make exceptions .

What do you wear while horseriding?

You should wear long trousers and clothing appropriate for outdoor activities; a t-shirt in summer, a sweater or jumper in winter.  If you are intending to borrow boots (an option at Jesters Flat) then don’t forget your socks.  At Jesters Flat they have hot showers so you are can bring a change of clothes and a towel for after your ride.  Hair nets or bandanas are available to wear under your helmet if you prefer.

What happens in wet weather?

Environmental conditions can affect your booked tour.  Most companies will still ride in rainy weather – as if they provide wet weather gear.  This can be a great activity in winter months!  However, if there are storms forecasted then it is unlikely that your tour will go ahead.  You should contact the tour operator if you are in doubt to find out about their cancellation policy or how to reschedule.

Can I take photos while I am riding?

If you wish to take photos while on the ride either put your phone in a zip pocket or secure clothing, as they are easily lost out of pockets or damaged. Your guide will let you know when you can take photos as they don’t permit you to take photos while you are riding along.

Reputable operators say ‘less is more’ so they don’t recommend taking a backpack.  Jewelry and sunglasses can also be easily lost, so if you have something valuable that you don’t want to be lost,  you should leave it behind!

Feedback on the Margaret River Ride

The Margaret River Ride - Globetrotting horse riding holidays

‘Truly the best five days of my life!’ – that’s how Kate Stanbury summed up her debut Globetrotting holiday, The Margaret River Ride in Western Australia! And THAT is why we love our job. Nothing brings us more joy than receiving feedback like this, knowing that we’ve helped someone create memories that they will treasure forever. So of course, we had to share Kate’s whole feedback form with you all! Check it out below – and maybe open the Margaret River ride page in a new tab in case you need to click ‘book’ before you finish reading!

Were there any stand-out experiences (good or bad) with the accommodation and meals that you would like to mention? The food that was cooked by Sally, Keith and Alex for us was beyond my expectations – there was always plenty of food to go around and it was of exceptional quality. The accommodation was wonderful. It can get quite cool in the evenings in Margaret River, but we were provided with beautiful linen and blankets that were toasty warm, and the tents themselves were spacious and very clean.

Were you happy with the horse/s that you rode ? I rode George for most of the trip and he was absolutely perfectly suited to me and my abilities. He was kind and gentle, and was always willing to go forward when asked. He was extremely responsive and yet didn’t shy, even when other horses were upset. He has beautiful movement, and listened to my instructions.

Were you happy with the standard of tack on the ride ? This was the first time I’d ridden in a stock saddle and I’m never going back to English again! So comfy!

The Margaret River Ride - Globetrotting horse riding holidays

Did you have a favourite day or experience while on your Globetrotting holiday ? My stand out experience was the beach ride on the last day. It was unforgettable, riding along Wonnerup Beach past the crystal clear, blue waters of the Indian Ocean. We got to gallop the horses back down the beach, which was exhilarating, before taking their tack off and going for a swim with them! I’ve never swum with horses before, and it was an experience I will treasure forever.

In respect to your guides, were you happy with their level of service, knowledge of the environment and hospitality ? Paul, Chelesa, Caitlin, Jamie, and all of the other girls who came out with us on various days were absolutely wonderful. They were all fantastic riders who were more than happy to give instruction if asked, and were very skilled at riding with such a large group. They all knew exactly what they were doing, where they were going, and could quickly change things around if something wasn’t working. They were all very chatty on the rides, talking about the environment and bush itself, where we were going, and general conversation. Paul and Fiona were the most generous and friendly hosts – they had dinner with us every night, had wonderful conversation, and were genuinely interested in what we did (outside of riding) and all of our horsey stories. Fiona was also a great mother hen, checking in with everyone to make sure they were getting on okay and helping out as needed.

In terms of value-for-money, how would you rate this particular ride ? I think this was a very good ride in terms of value for money. Everything (food, alcohol to your heart’s content, accommodation, outings, extra activities) was provided, along with an incredible horse riding adventure, with fantastically educated and skilled horses and four guides for every ride so that the group could be split as necessary. I didn’t have to spend a cent whilst I was there, and I don’t think you could achieve such an experience on your own without going way over the ride price.

Are there any other services or inclusions you would like to see added to this itinerary ? I honestly think that the ride and the experience was perfect!

The Margaret River Ride - Globetrotting horse riding holidays

We would LOVE a testimonial about your Globetrotting experience to share on our social media channels. The Margaret River Ride was truly the best five days of my life! We had the most amazing time riding through the WA bush, seeing blooming wildflowers and mobs of kangaroos, all atop our wonderfully educated horses. I rode George, who was an absolute sweetie. He was kind and gentle, reliable and always willing to go forward when needed, and was perfectly suited to me. Paul and Fiona were the most amazing hosts, looking after each and every one us, entertaining us with stories, and making sure everyone was having a great time. We had delicious home-cooked food every day, extra non-horsey activites each evening (chocolate decorating and the cocktail evening were highlights!), and warm and cosy accommodation. The most unforgettable experience was riding George at Wonnerup Beach, in the crystal clear, blue waters of the Indian Ocean. We got to canter down the beach with the wind at our backs under a perfect blue sky, before untacking and taking the horses swimming, which was an experience I’ll treasure forever. If you want to really experience WA and its stunning southwest, then I would highly recommend The Margaret River Ride – it has something for everyone!

Margaret River Wine Tasting Guide: Top Wineries & Vineyards

by Emily Cass | Mar 16, 2018 | Australia & NZ | 4 comments

Margaret River Wine Tasting Guide: Top Wineries & Vineyards

Margaret River is one of the most renowned wine regions in Australia , known not only for their top quality wines but for their outstanding food and serene beaches .

While the Margaret River region produces less than 3 per cent of Australia’s wine, it accounts for more than a fifth of its premium wines. There are over 180 wineries to choose from, each with something different to offer so honestly, it’s hard to go wrong.

You could spend days sampling your way through all the vineyards, but below we’ve listed our favourite wineries in Margaret River , as well as how to make the most out of your time here.

How to get to Margaret River

Perth to Margaret River

Margaret River, located in the south of Western Australia, can be reached in approximately 3 hours from Perth. The drive is very straightforward and there are small towns and sights to visit along the way if you choose to break it up.

P ublic transport isn’t Western Australia’s strong point, therefore w e strongly recommend getting a car for your trip as it allows for more flexibility and the opportunity to visit a variety of the surrounding areas.

If driving is out of the question, South West Coach Lines runs express services from Elizabeth Quay in Perth to the larger cities such as Busselton, Bunbury, Dunsborough and Margaret River.

Where to Stay in Margaret River

There is no shortage of accommodation in Margaret River town and you can expect to find everything from villas to homes to apartments. If you have a large group, be sure to check out the luxurious Waters Edge Margaret River.

Book a Hotel in Margaret River.

How to Get around Margaret River

Vasse Felix Wine Tour Group

Unfortunately, there is no form of public transport (apart from taxis) in Margaret River (unlike the Wine Tram in South Africa ), so you’ll need to work out how to get around yourself, i.e rent a car!

Under strict Australian laws, your alcohol blood content cannot be over 0.05 (in some cases 0.00) and if you plan to taste wines all day, I can assure you, you’ll find yourself over this limit. If you find yourself in a group of keen wine drinkers with no one putting their hand up to sacrifice fewer glasses of delicious savvy-b, then we suggest hiring a private driver for the day OR jumping on an organised wine tour.

Tip: If you have a group of 4 or more, hiring a driver for the day is far more cost effective (& fun) than taking a tour. After all, you get to make the schedule! Drivers can be hired for 1/2 day which is usually from 11-2 ($350 AUD) or full day 10-5 ($500 AUD) and of course, these times can be flexible based on how much time you have.

We used Jake from DBM Drivers (shown in the hat above) and would strongly recommend booking him in advance. He helped with the planning of our day, he was extremely efficient and really made our day as carefree and effortless as possible. We’re not affiliated with him in any way, we just loved his service!

During the busy season (December – March), drivers can book out very quickly so if you can’t snatch up Jake, here are a few more options to try:

  • A Touch of Glass
  • Margaret River Pick me up
  • Drift Charters

Where to eat in Margaret River

Margaret River

Margaret River has one main street that is lined with many different restaurants. You definitely won’t go hungry. If there’s one place you need to eat at, make it the Margaret River Bakery . A huge selection of freshly baked pastries, sandwiches, juices and sit down meals. If you’re anything like us, be prepared to go a little overboard on the baked goods. Unfortunately, they are closed on Sundays.

For a decent pub meal and live music on most nights, Settlers Tavern is the place to end your night (although they stop serving food at 9:00 pm). Other notable restaurants include Drift Café (great for breakfast), Swings Tap House and Kitchen (pizza), Brew House Margaret River & Morris Anytime (modern Australian).

For a more formal dining experience, many of the wineries do offer sit down lunches, often with vineyard views and it’s a great way to end your winery tour. Some of the most popular wineries that offer lunch include, but are not limited to Leeuwin Estate , Wills Domain, Voyager Estate , Cullen Wines, Fishbone , Arimia Estate & Watershed Premium Wines .

What are the top best wineries & vineyards in Margaret River?

Vasse Felix

If only we had time for all of them, then we could tell you what the best wineries are in Margaret River! But even then, everyone has different tastes.

We can tell you this though… You can get up to 4 wineries in a day , with a nice lunch included during that time. To avoid spending most of the day in a car, prepare your schedule with wineries that reside in the same area. Your driver can help with this. Most of these wineries offer free tastings however occasionally for the more expensive wines, a small fee of $5 is applicable but can be waived with the purchase of a bottle.

Top Wineries & Vineyards in Margaret River

Vasse Felix

Vasse Felix Margaret River Winery

Vasse Felix, a stand out above them all , was established in 1967 and was the first winery in the entire region, not only for the wines but the cellar door, the grounds and also the staff.

As soon as you enter from the road you’re immediately taken back by the tall beautiful trees that line the driveway & vineyards. They have a full menu for lunch or for a more casual approach, order one of their delicious charcuterie plates to devour in the outdoor seating area.

Our group walked away with the largest purchase at this winery. Our favourites? The Classic Dry White (available in most stores) and the Semillon Sauvignon Blanc . Perfect summery/everyday drinking wines.

Vasse Felix

Cape Mentelle Margaret River Winery

Cape Mentelle is one of Margaret River’s five founding wineries and was established in 1970.  Set amongst bushlands with a relaxing atmosphere, you can sip your wines as you swing in the beautiful front gardens or head out the back to roam the vineyards.

Cape Mentelle became well known for it’s Cabernet Sauvignon which won the  Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy in both 1983 and 1984. However, it was the dessert wine that we left with after a visit to this vineyard. Sweet, but refreshing after a meal.

Cape Mentelle

They also offer a “behind the scenes” Vineyard and Winery Tour or a Degustation Tour and during the summer months, they occasionally have an open outdoor cinema where you can relax on beanbags, sip wine and order food. Be sure to check out the barrel room located behind the tasting room. Insta shot!

Woodlands Margaret River Winery

Woodlands Winery is spread over two vineyards, 2km apart and was established in 1973. To this day, the Cabernet Sauvignon is made from the same plant originally planted by the owners, back in the beginning. All of the vines are dry grown and farmed using only traditional, organic methods with both vineyards maintained purely by hand with each wine spending up to 2 years in oak barrels.

Woodlands Vineyard

The cellar door in Woodlands felt very homely and casual as though we were in their lounge room. You could immediately tell there was a long family history behind this vineyard, so much so that all the wines are named after past family members, each with a different story. For all you red lovers, Woodlands primarily focus is on red wines so if red wine isn’t your thing then you may want to reconsider your visit to Woodland’s winery.

Pierro Margaret River Vineyard

Pierro

Pierro was established in 1979 and is extremely famous for its Chardonnay which sold out in 2 months from release. Jeremy Oliver, one of Australia’s most reputable wine writers once stated: “Pierro Chardonnay is the role model for so many of Australia’s more opulent and hedonistically proportioned chardonnays and is a stunning expression of Margaret River Chardonnay.”

There was a large selection for us to sample and were impressed with many of the Pierro wines. Although Chardonnay is their #1 seller, the Semillon Sauvignon Blanc isn’t far behind.

Note: Pierro doesn’t take organised group tours so you can only visit this winery if you have your own driver or are driving yourself.

Amelia Park Wines & Restaurant

Amelia Park Wines

Although we didn’t sample the wines in the cellar door due to time restraints, we can safely say it’s one of the best places to have lunch.

Amelia Park is the hottest new restaurant to hit the town of Margaret River and after enjoying quite a feast we can really understand why. The restaurant which is separated from the main cellar room (the building on the right of the above pic) can be entered through an extremely large door, which then opens out to an impressive view of the vineyards.

The service was great, the menu was extensive, reasonably priced and the food was outstanding . Be sure to make a reservation here as they do book out, especially on the weekends.

Whilst these were our personal choices, do know that there are 215 vineyards and over 180 wineries located throughout the Margaret River region.

Find a full list of Margaret River wineries to visit here.

Is there anything else but wine to sample?

Margaret River Distillery

Yes! Not only can you sample many different wines in Margaret River but you can also wake up your taste buds up sampling gin, vodka and whiskey at the Margaret River Distilling Company . If you’re feeling game,  try their hot chilli vodka (they have water on hand!). They also have a food menu. Our favourite gin was the “Giniversity: Botanical”. However, it doesn’t come cheap – $55 for a 500mL bottle.

Margaret River Distillery

For all you cheese lovers, make your way towards the Margaret River Dairy Company and find your favourite by sampling up to 5 kinds of cheese as well as their fresh yoghurt. We recommend grabbing the gourmet package which includes 5-6 cheeses (or a fresh yoghurt) as well as a packet of crackers. Such good value and the perfect accompaniment to have alongside your wine purchases.

Got a sweet tooth? The Margaret River Chocolate Factory has you covered. Free samples and a huge range of yummy chocolates for purchase. What more do you need?

Where to from Margaret River?

This all depends on the time you have and what you’re after. The options are endless around this region and every one of them is simply beautiful. You should allow at least 3 days to see the best of the best.

See our “ Top 10 Highlights of South Western Australia & Perth “ for some of our favourite choices!

Margaret River was no doubt one of our Western Australian Highlights. How can you go wrong with pristine beaches, award-winning wines, gluttonous amounts of food, perfect company and bright sunny days? You can’t. This part of Western Australia isn’t to be missed!

Margaret River

Have you been to any of the wineries in this region? What else should we add to our list next time we visit?

Margaret River Region

We love to head down south to the Margaret River region at least once a year. Its around 3hrs drive from Perth and is home to some of the most amazing wineries, breweries and ice creameries you can find – and the best thing is most of them are totally kid friendly !

14138 - EnvironSustain_Electric Highway Map D

Here Ill give you a quick run down on our favourite breweries and wineries to visit , as that’s basically all we do when we visit…eat and drink while the kids play !

Cheeky Monkey Brewery    4259 CAVES ROAD MARGARET RIVER, WA, 6285

A fantastic restaurant with locally brewed beer and cider  (if you’re a cider lover the sweet pear cider is amazing) and a great kids playground. Open from 10am to 6pm. Lunch served from 11.30am to 3.30pm with pizzas available til 5pm everyday. The Pizzas are the BEST!

Bootleg Brewery   Puzey Rd, Wilyabrup WA

Another favourite of ours, situated on a lake with plenty of room for the kids to run around, plus a playground and things like giant jenga to keep the kids amused. The food here is absolutely amazing, and for those that love a good hot dog you cant go past the one here !

bootleg2

Colonial Brewing Company  – Osmington Road Margaret River

Colonial is set on a huge property with dams, grass area and large outdoor playground for the little ones. It has a fantastic atmosphere and is definitley another one of our favourite places to visit. There is also a small indoor toy area for kids on those rainy days.

colonial

Black Brewing Co (formally the Duckstein)

We used to come here for one reason and one reason only – the pork shanks! My hubby is pork shank mad and they used to make the most amazing shanks you have ever seen. We haven’t dined here since they changed owners and names so not sure what the menu is now like , but the brewery is in the most idyllic location and has a playground nearby (You cant directly see them from the restaurant unless your sitting outside but great for the older kids).

black-brew

Aravina Estate  – 61 Thornton Road, Yallingup

The Aravina is a luxury estate in Yallingup which boasts a french design playground, sports car gallery, homewares store, cellar and restaurant. The high quality food is made with locally grown produce, including from their own kitchen gardens. Defnitley a must for those who love wine, and very kid friendly.

aravaina

Watershed Premium Winery  – Cnr Bussell Highway & Darch Road Margaret River

Watershed is the closest winery to town being only 5 minutes out of the town. Its situated on a beautiful damn and vineyard and offers a range of food from cafe menu through to kids menu.It also has a a fantastic courtyard kids playground.

watershed

Millers Ice Cream  – 314 Wirring Rd, Cowaramup WA

This place is fantastic for kids with amazing ice cream, plus a playground and offers food such as scones, cakes and slices also.

ic-cream4

Simmos Ice Cream  – 161 Commonage Road, Dunsborough

With every single flavour you could possibly dream of , plus a playground, animals and mini golf course – Simmos is a must visit in Dunsborough !

simmos

When it comes to places to stay there are SO many options and we tend to stay different each time but one of our favourites is the Bushy Lake Chalets  . We love the lake spa chalet which has 3 bedrooms (2 double / queen beds and 1 with two singles), a fireplace, and spa overlooking the back lake and bush area. Its a few mins drive out of the town and perfect for those with families.

bushky-lake5

There are SO many things to do and see and many more places I haven’t listed but as these are the ones we have tried and tested, I chose these to recommend. Id recommend at least 3 days depending on what you want to do while you’re in the area 🙂
