Producer S1 revealed that the song was originally meant to release on Watch The Throne ( 2011 ) and even had a verse from Jay-Z , but Kanye instead saved it for himself. [4] Kid Cudi confirmed that his vocals in the song were originally meant to just be a reference. Cudi also stated that he wasn't very happy with his feature in the song, since he felt "underused" by Kanye. [5]

Kanye West and Kid Cudi’s ‘Kids See Ghosts': A Timeline of Their Tumultuous History

Kids See Ghosts , due out June 8, marks the first official joint album between Kid Cudi and Kanye West , but it's far from the first time they've collaborated. The Midwestern-bred rappers have been working together on and off for over a decade, when Kanye recruited Cudi for his widely influential fourth album, 808s & Heartbreak , and have linked up for songs including  Man on the Moon II 's "Erase Me," My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy 's "Gorgeous" and "All of the Lights," and more recently,  The Life of Pablo 's "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1," which Cudi co-wrote.

But their relationship — professional and otherwise — has been a turbulent one, beginning strong in 2008, lapsing into a quite public feud in 2016, and gaining steadier footing in recent years, with each facing personal turmoil along the way.  Kids See Ghosts  will be the first true testament to the strength of their partnership in quite some time, and given the largely derisive response — at least critically — to Kanye's freshly released  Ye , the odds seem stacked against them.

2006: Kanye and Cudi Meet for the First Time

Cudi, not yet famous, runts into a fresh-off-of- Late Registration  Kanye at Virgin Megastore, introduces himself, and tells him they'll be "working together soon."

“I was looking at CDs, saw the gleam of a Jesus piece in the right side of my eye, looked up, and it was Kanye West,” Cudi recalled of the encounter in a 2009  Spin  interview, adding that he offered Kanye some of his music, but that the rapper politely declined.

February 2008: Collaboration Begins

Cudi releases his breakthrough single, "Day 'n' Nite," catching the attention of Kanye. He's invited to work on the seminal  808s & Heartbreak , co-writing standout tracks including "Heartless" and "Welcome to Heartbreak."

September 2009: Cudi Releases Man on the Moon: The End of the Day

Cudi releases his debut album,  Man On The Moon: The End of the Day  on Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music imprint. Kanye and his longtime collaborator/former manager Plain Pat are among the executive producers, with Kanye guesting on  “Make Her Say”  and co-producing  “Sky Might Fall.”

2009-2010: Cudi Works on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Cudi is one of the dozens of artists recruited to work on Kanye's 2010 opus,  My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , during his self-imposed exile to Oahu, Hawaii. He provides backing vocals on  “All of the Lights”  and co-writes and features on " Gorgeous ."

Just before the record's release, Cudi puts out his sophomore album, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager , also on G.O.O.D. Music. Kanye is featured on lead single "Erase Me," which he co-wrote with Cudi, James Scheffer (Usher, Eminem), and Frank Romano.

September 2012: Kanye and Cudi Team for Cruel Summer

G.O.O.D. Music's first (and thus far only) compilation album,  Cruel Summer , is released. Kanye executive produces, while Cudi guests on  “The Morning”  with Raekwon, Pusha T, Common, 2 Chainz, Cyhi the Prynce, and D'banj. He also commandeers a solo cut, the clattering, eclectic " Creepers ."

April 2013: Cudi Leaves G.O.O.D. Music

Just a few days before the release of his third LP , Indicud , Cudi reveals on Power 106 Los Angeles that he's no longer a part of G.O.O.D.  When the album comes out a week later, Kanye's previously announced contributions — as well as those of Pusha-T and Common — are   cut.

"Man, everything is cool. Everything is peace with everybody on the label. There's never been any issues,"  Cudi explained at the time , saying it was tough because he viewed Kanye as a "big brother."

“[Kanye and I] were talking on the phone the other day and these are things I’ve been wanting to talk to him about, me starting my own direction," he continued. "He got it because he’s trying to start his new path and try new things as an artist and he was just like, ‘Man, I feel you as an artist. It’s cool, whatever.'"

February 2014: Cudi Tells Complex He's Unhappy With a Yeezus Feature

When asked about his barely-there vocal on  Yeezus  track "Guilt Trip," Cudi tells  Complex he was surprised to hear himself on the record.

"The vocal that I did on that song was a couple years old. I forgot which session it was, but it was just a reference," Cudi explained. "I discovered that I was on the song via Twitter ... I’m like, 'What the f--k is everyone talking about?"

He continued: "Part of me was flattered, like, it’s kind of cool that he thought of me.Then I started thinking about it more. It was like, 'Why not call me and have me come in there and give it? Why underuse me? Why put four bars of vocals to coax my fans into thinking this is a legitimate Kid Cudi feature on this song and it isn’t?'"

December 2015: Kanye Praises Cudi's Speedin' Bullet 2 Heaven

Cudi shares his fifth studio album,  Speedin' Bullet 2 Heaven , produced by him, Plain Pat, and his manager, Dennis Cummings. It's derided by critics for poor production, songwriting, and a lack of cohesion. Cudi defends it; Kanye praises it.

February 2016: Kanye Releases The Life of Pablo

Kanye rolls out his chaotically constructed seventh LP,  The Life of Pablo , featuring a co-writing credit from Cudi on "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1."

September 2016: Cudi Slams Kanye on Twitter

Amid a maelstrom of since-deleted tweets, Cudi calls out a number of rappers — Kanye included — for being "fake" and "corny."

"My tweets apply to who they apply. Ye, Drake, whoever. These n––s don't give a f--k about me. And they ain't f--kin' with me. N––s keep you close when they how powerful you are by yourself. When they see your greatness. Out of fear," he wrote . "I've been loyal to those who haven't been to me and that ends now. Now I'm your threat. Anybody got a issue with my words I'm glad. If you feel me, don't be scared to use your voice. I was for so long out of blind loyalty."

September 2016: Kanye Responds to Cudi's Tweets

While at a Tampa Bay concert in support of 2016's  The Life of Pablo , Kanye fires back at Cudi onstage.

"Do you know how many people wish they could be signed to G.O.O.D. Music?" West told the crowd. "Get their life changed, have an opportunity? Never forget that! I am so hurt. I feel so disrespected. Kid Cudi, we are two black men in a racist world. ... Don't ever mention my name in a bad manner, none of y'all."

September 2016: Kanye Publicly Forgives Cudi

A few days later, this time at a show in Houston, Kanye walks back his comments.

"[He's] the most important artist of the past 10 years, the most influential, and I hope he's doing well," he said between singing. “I just want to take this time and say Kid Cudi is my brother and I hope he’s doing well tonight.”

October 2016: Cudi Announces a Stay in Rehab

In a lengthy Facebook note , Cudi reveals he's entering rehab for depression and suicidal thoughts, writing, “I guess I give so much of myself to others I forgot that I need to show myself some love too. I think I never really knew how. Im scared, im sad, I feel like I let a lot of people down and again, Im sorry. Its time I fix me.”

When he leave rehab the following month, he thanks Kanye, among others, for his love and support. "I wanted to let yall know it meant the world to me. I have nothing but love for you. Words can't really express how much it made my heart glow," he said.

November 2016: Cudi Joins Kanye Onstage in California

The same month, Cudi and Kanye perform "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1" during the Sacramento, California stop of his St. Pablo tour. It was one of only three songs Kanye played before leaving the concert abruptly. West then canceled the rest of the tour after being hospitalized for his own mental health issues.

November 2017: Kanye and Cudi Perform Together in Chicago

After a mostly quiet year for both artists, Cudi brings Kanye out for another rendition of "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1," this time during a stop for his Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin' Tour at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Just as Kanye gave Cudi a stage to return to after facing his own personal trauma, Cudi returned the favor, welcoming Kanye back for his first live stint following a lengthy public absence.

April 2018: Kanye Announces Kids See Ghosts

Amid his antic-packed return to Twitter, Kanye announces he and Cudi will release a collaborative project entitled Kids See Ghosts in June. At the start of the month, they share the album artwork and tracklist.

Speaking with Hip Hop Magazine , S1 recalled his contribution: "Before Kanye started this album he had like 20 beats from me on hold, but what's crazy is none of those 20 joints made the album," he said. "'Guilt Trip' was actually a joint I did in London for Watch the Throne . In fact, Kanye and Jay were in the room with me when I did it. I did it on the spot and they loved it – Kanye laid a verse immediately on it, and he ended up using it for this particular project. I make music to the best of my ability and move on, 'Guilt Trip' is an example of that — a seed I planted a while back that was used later on."

The once-inseparable duo have had a turbulent history in the past few years.

One notable feature of Hip Hop is conflict, and Kanye West is no stranger to beef . The genre has seen several artists go from friends to foes, to friends all over again. Kanye West and Kid Cudi were once inseparable, often complementing each other stylistically and musically. Unfortunately, things took a turn in their relationship in recent years, leading the Cleveland rapper to cut ties with his former mentor.

Nonetheless, it looks like the grass might be greener for the famous duo. Their saga of artistic kinship, brotherhood, and shared triumphs has kept fans hopeful that they will become attached at the hip once again. Most recently, fans saw promising signs when Kid Cudi embraced Kanye at his Vultures listening party. Let’s explore the highs and lows that these two musical maestros share in their history.

Mid 2000s: The Early Connection

The roots of Kanye West and Kid Cudi as friends can be traced back to the mid-2000s. The two crossed paths in New York City as Cudi worked various retail jobs. First, Kanye West and Kid Cudi met at a Virgin Megastore where the former was browsing through CDs in 2006. Then, Cudi formally introduced himself while working at the BAPE Store in New York and handed his CD to West.

Kid Cudi famously caught Ye’s attention with his unique sound and distinct style. Plain Pat put Kid Cudi on Kanye's radar, leading to his deal with G.O.O.D Music. In 2008, Cudi’s debut mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi , made waves exponentially. The lauded tape featured tracks that showcased his introspective lyrics and experimental production. Ye was one of the major stars in attendance at the mixtape’s release party. 

2008-2012: A Symphony And A Sign

2008 marked a milestone in the Kanye-Cudi chronicles. The pair worked together on Jay-Z ’s The Blueprint 3 , as well as West’s iconic 808s & Heartbreak . The latter album famously defied conventions, laying the groundwork for a new era in Hip Hop. Cudi’s fingerprints are all over the album, contributing vocals and collaborating on tracks like "Welcome To Heartbreak," and "Paranoid."

That same year, Kid Cudi was signed by Kanye West into G.O.O.D. Music Label. Cudi’s career proved a success, beginning with the release of his 2009 album, Man On The Moon: The End of Day . 2013: Kid Cudi Leaves G.O.O.D. Music

On April 2nd, 2013, Cudi announced while on air with Power 106, that he was leaving G.O.O.D. Music. He stated: “Everything is cool. Everything is peace with everybody on the label. There’s never been any issues, but I’m announcing that I’m no longer on G.O.O.D. Music.”

When he was asked if Kanye had something to do with him leaving, he clarified that wasn’t the case. “I can never be tired of Kanye. We were talking on the phone the other day and there are just things I’ve been wanting to talk to him about. About me starting my own direction. And he got it because you know, he’s trying to start his new path and trying new things as an artist… We cool.” Soon after, Cudi went on to start his own label, Wicked Awesome Records. 

2014: Cudi's Frustrations With “Guilt Trip”

After Cudi departed West’s label, West released his 2013 album, Yeezus . The song “Guilt Trip” featured Cudi’s vocals on the outro. This came as a shock to Cudi, who alleged he only found out he was on the track through Twitter. In an interview with Complex , he shared that while he was at first flattered, he wasn’t too happy with it. “Part of me was flattered, like, it’s kind of cool that he thought of me,” he said. “Then I started thinking about it more. It was like, ‘Why not call me and have me come in there and give it? Why underuse me? Why put four bars of vocals to coax my fans into thinking this is a legitimate Kid Cudi feature on this song and it isn’t?”

2016: Kid Cudi And Kanye West Fall Out & Reconcile

In 2016, Kid Cudi took to his Twitter account to send out a barrage of tweets slamming multiple artists, including Kanye West. Drake and Travis Scott are other names that appeared in his tweets. In the tweets, Cudi claimed multiple stars were hating on him. In the same vein, he shared that he was “bout to crush their entire existence.”

West addressed Cudi’s public confrontation. While performing on his Saint Pablo Tour , he shared his hurt concerning the matter. “I am so hurt. I feel so disrespected,” Ye said. “Kid Cudi, we are two Black men in a racist world. Don’t ever mention my name in a bad manner, none of y’all.” A few days later, West addressed the matter again. However, this time, he expressed forgiveness by saying he hoped Cudi was doing well. In November, the two artists reconciled on stage. Kid Cudi joined Kanye West for a performance of "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1" in Sacramento, California.

2017-2018: KIDS SEE GHOSTS

In 2017, West joined Cudi on stage for the latter’s Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ tour. This was after Ye had a lengthy absence from the public eye due to his mental health. By 2018, West sparked excitement among fans, promising an incoming joint album. The lauded collaborative project was titled Kids See Ghost , and was set to hit the shelves on June 8th.

February 2022: The Pete Davidson Saga

The announcement of Donda 2’ s release came with news that Cudi would not be on the album. In a now-deleted Instagram post, West alluded to his decision being made because Cudi was friends with Pete Davidson, who was, at the time Kim Kardashian ’s new beau. “Just so everyone knows Cudi will not be on Donda because he’s friends with you know who,” Ye wrote. 

In the comment section, Cudi responded to West, saying: “Too bad I dont wanna be on ur album u f—in dinosaur hahaha. everyone knows ive been the best thing about ur albums since i met u. Ima pray for you brother.” Additionally, Cudi also took to his Twitter account, writing: “We talked weeks ago about this. You’re whack for flipping the script and posting this lie just for a look on the internet. You ain’t no friend. BYE.”

The exchange continued, as West posted on his Instagram the next day about the matter. He wrote: “THE REASON I ASKED CUDI TO AT THE LEAST SPEAK TO SKETE IS BECAUSE FOR YEARS CUDI ALWAYS MADE IT SEEM LIKE IT WAS ME AND HIM AGAINST EVERYONE NOW THAT IM FIGHTING FOR MY FAMILY HE NOT BY MY SIDE THIS IS BIGGER THAN MUSIC.”

April 2022: A Feature With Pusha T

News surfaced that Cudi and Ye were featured on Pusha T’s album . The track, “Rock N Roll,” led many to believe the pair had reconciled. However, Cudi made it clear that they were not friends.  “Hey! So I know some of you heard about the song I got w Pusha,” he said. “I did this song a year ago when I was still cool w Kanye. I am not cool w that man. He’s not my friend and I only cleared the song for Pusha cuz thats my guy. This is the last song u will hear me on w Kanye.”

August 2022: “It Would Take A Miracle To Be Friends Again”

In an expansive Esquire cover feature, Kid Cudi delved into the breakdown of his connection with Kanye West. He specifically addressed the adverse reactions from West's fanbase. Moreover, he identified what he perceives as a recurring pattern of behavior from the controversial icon. Despite previous reconciliations after past disagreements, Cudi asserted that this time, their friendship had reached an irreversible end. 

“With all due respect, I’m not Drake, who’s about to take a picture with him next week and be friends again, and their beef is squashed,” Cudi said. "That’s not me. What I say, I mean. I will be done with you. It’s gonna take a motherfucking miracle for me and that man to be friends again. I don’t see it happening.” 

December 2023: Kanye West And Kid Cudi Hug It Out In Las Vegas

Kid Cudi and Kanye West have buried the hatchet once again. In Las Vegas, at Ye’s livestream event for his Vultures album, the pair were all smiles with each other.  Evidently, this development came as a surprise, especially since Cudi had sworn to cut all ties with West just last year. Nonetheless, this could hopefully lead to new moments for longtime friends and collaborators in the future.

Kid Cudi Is Annoyed With His Yeezus Feature

Given Kid Cudi 's well-publicized split with Kanye West 's G.O.O.D. music, it was jarring to hear his recognizable vocals sampled on Yeezus : "If you love me so much then why'd you let me go-o-o- o-oooo ?" he belts on "Guilt Trip". Turns out that vocal is a few years old and Cudi wasn't happy to hear it on the song, he tells  Complex ( via MTV ).

"I discovered that I was on the song via Twitter," he said. "I saw kids hitting me up, like, 'Are you on 'Guilt Trip?!' or saying 'Great job!' and I'm like, 'What the fuck is everyone talking about?" He explained that he recognized the song and the beat instantly once he listened. He was initially pleased, but quickly changed his mind: "Why not call me and have me come in there and give it? Why underuse me?" he asked. "Why put four bars of vocals to coax my fans into thinking this is a legitimate Kid Cudi feature on this song and it isn't?"

"Same deal with the G.O.O.D. Music album, the compilation," he continued. "Had I not given Kanye 'Creepers' [for "The Morning"], my only presence would've been on that one song, that I can't even remember the title for. I would've barely been on that album."

It's also easy to interpret the Cudi sample on "Guilt Trip" as a sly wink aimed at Cudi—it sounds like Cudi is asking, "If you love me so much then why'd you let me go [from G.O.O.D. Music]?"

Kid Cudi was hospitalized for a foot injury after jumping off the stage during his Coachella 2024 performance on Sunday.

“Hey guys, so I broke my foot today at the show. 🤦🏾‍♂️ just leavin the hospital,” the “Day ‘n’ Night” rapper wrote on X Monday.

The hip-hop star, 40, explained that he had never broken a bone before and called the accident “all a bit crazy.”

“I wanna thank u all for ur concerns and well wishes!! I love yall man,” he said. “I heard yall still ragin when I was offstage. Made me smile big.”

He also posted a video as he recovered in bed and joked that this is what happens when a “40-year old man tries to prance around off stage like he’s 26.”

Videos circulating on social media captured the “Pursuit of Happiness” artist leaping off the stage and landing on the ground while putting pressure on his foot. He was then seen wincing in pain as he attempted to push himself up.

Cudi, born Scott Mescudi, subsequently ended his set early due to his wound and was carried away from the stage to immediately seek medical attention.

Fans of the artist flooded social media with well-wishes and praised his performance — which was a surprise addition to the Coachella Weekend Two lineup.

“It was a dope set bro. Feel better,” one person commented on his post.

“Praying for a quick recovery big bro!! You killed that set too!” a second person wrote.

“Oh bro! You left it all out on the stage. Heal up,” a third fan said.

“hope u good cudder, that was an amazing show, best one throughout all of Coachella,” another added.

The “Knuckles” actor had performed new music from his album, “Insano,” including tracks “Moon Man S–t” and “Blue Sky” during the show.

Along with his musical enveavors, Cudi has also been busy in his personal life as well.

He surprised followers last week by announcing his engagement to Louis Vuitton designer Lola Abecassis Sartore.

“My fiancé Lola and me at the ‘Knuckles’ premiere,” he wrote on Instagram on April 18 along with a photo of the couple cuddling up at the show’s screening party.

“This amazing woman makes me so happy, she is everything to me and im so excited to share this news w u all,” he added. “Life is wild, and right when I felt my future was uncertain, it became crystal clear with Lola. Happy Cud in full effect 😉🙏🏾.”

Sartore also celebrated taking the next step in their relationship with a sweet message on Instagram.

“I never thought I could love someone this much! So proud to call you my fiancé Scott. ❤️‍🔥,” she said. “I can’t wait for you all to see this amazing man in the new ‘Knuckles’ show!”

Kid Cudi ‘s Coachella set was one of the most anticipated last-minute adds to the second weekend of the the 2024 festival. Sadly, the last couple songs Cudi was supposed to perform went without him after the singer attempted to jump off stage and broke his foot in the process.

Cudi addressed the incident on X late Sunday night and confirmed he had broken a bone: “Hey guys, so I broke my foot today at the show. just leavin the hospital. Never broken a bone before so this is all a bit crazy. I wanna thank u all for ur concerns and well wishes!! I love yall man. I heard yall still ragin when I was offstage. Made me smile big.”
