20+ Tips & Things to Know for Harvest Caye, Belize — Norwegian’s Private Island

Is your cruise headed to Harvest Caye? If you’re headed on a Norwegian cruise to the western Caribbean, chances are good your ship will stop here. If so, you are in for a treat.

The cruise line’s private island is one of the nicest in the Caribbean, with a tremendous amount of things to see and do… without having to spend a fortune.

Harvest Caye sits at the southern end of Belize, about 50 miles north of the border between Guatemala and Honduras. And while it is an island, it sits only about a mile from the mainland and roughly five miles from the town of Placencia.

Norwegian Cruise Lines spent an enormous amount of time and money to transform the island into a playground for its cruise guests. Here are more details of everything to know about NCL’s Harvest Caye, including things to tips, things to know, and what to do…

Map of Harvest Caye

Map of Harvest Caye, Belize

As you can see, just about everything on the island is within a short walk. The main focal points on Harvest Caye is the area around the pool, LandShark Bar & Grill, and the beginning of the beach. Here you’ll find the most people while crowds get thinner the farther away from here you get.

The most distinguishable landmark on the island is the lighthouse, which towers over the landscape. The lighthouse is actually the signature of the zipline course that runs across the island. If you decide to do this adventure, you’ll get to ride from the lighthouse across the beach (see below).

Other points of interest include the city/shopping area, the wildlife reserve, and the marina.

10 Things to Do on Harvest Caye

For such a small island, there are a surprising number of things to do. As you might expect, most of the activities revolve around the pool and beach, but there is really something for everybody.

Pool on Harvest Caye island

Swimming Pool (Free) Located just as you walk off the ship’s pier and in the heart of the island, there is the swimming pool. It’s a large resort-style pool with lots of bends and turns, a bridge with waterfall, swim-up bar, a gently-sloping shallow kids area, and hundreds of chairs/umbrellas for you to lounge. The pool is the heartbeat of Harvest Caye, and you’ll find the most cruise passengers spending their time here. Private pool cabanas are are available for rent for around $250, but other than that, it’s free to use.

Beach (Free) Across from the pool is a scalloped cove of the beach that runs for hundreds of feet. There are ample lounges and umbrellas, as well as shaded “clamshell” covers that you can rent for $39 for the day. Along the beach there are lifeguards posted, and there are a number of beach games like volleyball and soccer.

The closer you are to the pool (near the start of the beach), the more people you’ll find. The crowds thin as you walk down the beach. One more thing, the water isn’t the best. Visibility can be iffy, and don’t expect the electric blue color you might find elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Zipline on Harvest Caye

Zipline (Paid) If there’s a signature things to do on Harvest Caye, it has to be the zipline. During our stop people were constantly soaring through the air on the course that zig-zags around the island. The most exciting run goes from the lighthouse, over the beach, and across the water. Person after person flew by on this route… all seeming to have the time of their lives. The zipline costs between $29 to $89, depending on the route you want to take and adult versus child pricing.

Paddleboarding/Kayaking (Paid) On the backside of the island is a calm area of water that features a number of bends and turns for guests to use stand-up paddleboard or kayaks. The area is roped off from the surrounding water (so you don’t have to worry about taking a wrong turn into the open water). It’s also a bit out of the way so you can feel like you’re out on your own without going far. The cost for renting a kayak or paddleboard is $29.

Ropes Course (Paid) If you have an older kid or teen, they might be interested in the ropes course. It’s basically a multi-story jungle gym. You strap in and climb around different obstacles that are dangling up to 20 feet above the ground. During our trip the zip line was a more popular choice and you could do the ropes course without any wait. It’s also affordable at only $19 per person.

Beach Villa (Paid) Sometimes you just want to relax… in style. There is a section of Harvest Caye’s beach that is roped off and available only to guests staying in the handful of private beach villas. Here you have everything you could want, including your own cabana with air conditioning, loungers, daybeds, facilities, and more. The cost is steep — $599 for up to six people. Extra persons are $49 each. Still, if you want to ensure you have your own comfortable spot away from all the other cruise passengers, this is your ticket.

Shopping If you’ve never been on a cruise, then you might be surprised at how much shopping is promoted and encouraged on the ship and on shore. Harvest Caye is no different. In the “town” section of the island there are a number of souvenir stands and shops selling everything from small trinkets to bamboo bed sheets. There is even a Harley-Davidson-branded store.

Wildlife Experience to do on Harvest Caye

Wildlife Experience (Free) On Harvest Caye is a small “Wildlife Experience” for guests. Inside there is a butterfly exhibit, a boa constrictor, and two aviaries with a toucan and scarlet macaw. The entire area is free but only takes about five minutes to walk through. If you’re looking for a calm shady spot to sit down, it’s a great idea to get away from the buzz of the rest of the island.

Splash pad for kids

Kids Splash Area (Free) If you have smaller kids, check out the splash area. With tons of contraptions spraying water in every direction, it is one of the most impressive splash pads we’ve seen. Kids are sure to get wet and have a blast without having to worry about the depth of the pool or the ocean’s waves at the beach. Best of all, it’s free to play.

Off-Island Excursions (Paid) While you could certainly spend your entire day on the island of Harvest Caye, there are a number of excursions that take you to see the other sights in Belize. Some ideas include river rafting in the jungle, tubing, Mayan ruins, and more. This is also snorkeling and glass-bottom boat tours available near the island as well. If you plan to go on an excursion, expect to spend around $100 per person.

Places to Eat & Drink in Harvest Caye

Of course, a big part of cruise life is the food. Unlike other private islands run by cruise lines, Norwegian doesn’t supply food on Harvest Caye. You’ll need to bring money and purchase anything you want to eat. You can also head back to the ship for lunch if you don’t want to pay.

LandShark Bar & Grill If you eat on the island, it’s a good chance it will be at LandShark. Sitting poolside (there is even a bar that serves you in the pool), the multi-story restaurant is right in the heart of everything. It offers all your favorite drinks, and the food is traditional American fare. There are burgers and baskets, sandwiches, salads, wings, and more. As with all food on the island, the prices are a little high (about $12-18 for an entree), and made higher by a 12.5% tax and a 15% service charge that’s tacked onto your bill.

Laughing Bird Bar & Grill Down the beach from LandShark, the Laughing Bird was another popular spot to sit and have a drink and a bite to eat. It features all your favorite beach drinks (pina coladas, margaritas, etc.) As for food, it’s tropical bar eats with some BBQ options, ceviche, burgers, nachos, and chicken baskets.

Horse Eye Jack’s The smallest bar and restaurant on the island, Horse Eye Jack’s is also the least busy in our experience. It sits near the end of the island by the private villas. Here you can sit at the bar looking out over the water or even dine with your feet in the sand. The drink menu is as you would expect with everything from soda to beer (including local brews) to rum drinks and more. The food is a mix of burgers and salads, with local snacks like plantains and ceviche.

Manatee Bar Away from most of the buzz of the pool and beach, the Manatee Bar is a large complex sitting near the marina on the other side of the island. You can find your favorites here, including Belize’s own Lighthouse Lager if you want to sample the local brew.

Tips On Visiting Harvest Caye, Belize

If it’s your first time to visit the island with Norwegian, then there are some things to know to make your trip more enjoyable.

harvest caye belize norwegian cruise line

Bring Cash and/or a Credit Card We’d suggest bring cash (U.S. dollars are accepted) and leave the credit card on the ship. Either way, just know that your shipboard account doesn’t work at restaurants and bars on Harvest Caye, so you can’t charge things to the room. Instead, you’ll pay for anything you want out of pocket, so be sure to bring some moolah to shop and eat.

The Wildlife Experience is a Great Place to Find Shade If you want to chill out for a few, there are a number of shady spots to sit for a moment around the island. That said, we found the Wildlife Experience to be the shadiest and there are several benches where you can stop and rest a while. If you are simply wanting to cool off and get out of the sun, there’s no better spot.

harvest caye belize norwegian cruise line

Take a Picture With the Belize Sign Located near the marina, the “Belize” sign was installed for an Instagram-worthy spot to take a vacation photo. It’s one of the best spots on Harvest Caye to grab a souvenir snapshot, and it’s also free. We suggest checking it out after a couple of hours on the island. The line to grab a photo was 20 people deep when we first arrived.

Stake Out a Spot by the Pool Early If you know you want to hang out by the pool, then we suggest staking out your spot early in the day (when you first arrive). The pool is by far the most popular spot and when we arrived around lunch time every lounger was already claimed, despite us being on a smaller Norwegian ship. Get there early if you want a spot to set your stuff.

The Pool Isn’t Heated The pool is large and inviting, but just know that it’s not heated. If you visit during the winter months, it will still be warm enough to swim, but it might be a little bit of a shock when you first get in. As well, the ocean water can be chilly as well. It’s still better than trying to stay warm back home!

Lockers for rent

Lockers Are For Rent Around the island you’ll see several locker stands that have a couple of dozen spots for people to rent. The cost is $5 and you can actually put it on your ship’s card (no cash is accepted). For the price you get the use of the locker all day and are given a key to let you access it when you need to do so.

Rides Are Available Up and Down the Pier To get to Harvest Caye, there’s a lengthy walk from the ship down a long pier. If you have mobility issues, don’t fret. There are carts that run the length of the pier, picking up and dropping off passengers between the ship and the shore. If you walk the pier, just be sure you stay on your side of the walkway to let the carts pass.

There is a 12.5% Tax and 15% Service Charge at Restaurants As we mentioned above, food and drink on Harvest Caye is pricey. List prices for most beers are between $6-7. A burger and fries can cost $13-15. On top of that, however, is an additional 12.5% tax and then another 15% for a service charge (in place of a tip). In other words, a $10 cocktail on the menu will actually cost you $12.75 all told.

Go Down the Beach for Smaller Crowds The area around the pool and the head of the beach can get busy both in people and noise (music by the pool is usually playing). If you want to go somewhere quieter — or just want a beachfront lounger — then just walk down the beach a little bit. Crowds quickly thin and you can find a spot all your own beneath a palm tree.

There’s No Wi-Fi (That We Found) We went in search of wi-fi around the island to see if there were any free services to allow passengers to connect. Searching the pool and area near the LandShark Bar & Grill (the most popular area on the island), we weren’t about to find any open connections. If you planned to connect while in port, you might be out of luck.

Coke is Served on Harvest Caye It may sound silly, but loyal Coca-Cola drinkers don’t want Pepsi and vice versa. Pepsi products are served on Norwegian , and if you’re a Coke drinker you are out of luck. But on Harvest Caye, Coca-Cola is served in the restaurants. If you’re a Coke lover, it’s an oasis in a desert of Pepsi. One note — you can’t bring the drinks back on board with you, so get your fill while on the island.

Our Wander-Filled Life

Cruising to Harvest Caye, Belize

Last Updated on February 20, 2024 by Grant

Belize has been a favorite destination for Caribbean travelers for decades, with lush jungles, plentiful islands and a gorgeous reef to explore. It is also where you will also find Harvest Caye, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island resort.

I have now been to Belize three times, all on cruise ships. The first two visits were aboard Royal Caribbean ships, docking in Belize City. Our most recent visit was aboard the Norwegian Breakaway and we docked at Harvest Caye, which I feel has revolutionized cruising to Belize.

I have enjoyed each of my visits and have been able to explore the Mayan ruins at Lamanai, go zip lining through the jungle canopy and go tubing on a jungle river. In each instance, one of my favorite parts of the excursion was traversing the countryside and seeing this gorgeous country up close and personal.

(Disclaimer: When we link to places where you can buy our stuff or places we stayed, we are using special codes that earn us commissions on the sales at no additional cost to you. Please see our  Review Policy   for more information.)

Harvest Caye: Norwegian Cruise Line’s Private Island

We have already visited one of Norwegian’s private islands, Great Stirrup Cay, on the brief cruise we took to the Bahamas back in 2019. We enjoyed our time on the island, got to relax on the beach, do a little swimming and ate some good food while we were there. It was a relaxing time at, essentially, a beach resort.

R ead more about Great Stirrup Caye here.

When we booked our cruise aboard the Norwegian Breakaway , we had similar expectations for Harvest Caye. Honestly, though, Harvest Caye still managed to beat our expectations. This island is an excellent shore excursion in and of itself!

Read more about our time aboard the Norwegian Breakaway.

Why Harvest Caye Is so Revolutionary for Visitors to Belize?

The difficulty for cruisers has always been the shallow port of Belize City.

Cruise ships are simply too large to dock at Belize City, forcing passengers to transfer via boat (called a tender) to the port. While the process is not bad, it is cumbersome. Once you got to Belize City, there was a small shopping and dining area but getting out to explore the city meant pushing your way through those pitching tours and cabbies, like many cruise ports.

Norwegian Cruise Lines opened Harvest Caye, off the southern coast of Belize, in November 2016 and, as far as I am concerned, completely revolutionized visiting Belize on a cruise ship.

You don’t have to tender into port at Harvest Caye! The ship can dock at the island and you can easily walk ashore to explore this private resort. The island is extensive with plenty of offerings for guests to enjoy.

Want to get away from the resort and see the mainland of Belize? You can easily do that via a shore excursion or by getting a ferry ticket to the mainland town of Placencia Village. We opted for a shore excursion. Still, the ferry was quick and comfortable.

Want to go back to the ship? Just walk back down the covered walkway to easily return to the ship. No waiting in line for the tender.

One difference between Harvest Caye and many other cruise ship private islands is that here all the businesses and restaurants are owned and operated by locals. Yes, that means that you have to pay for food and drink. But that also means you get to support the local economy without going to the mainland.

What is There to Do at Harvest Caye?

As you walk onto the low island, you are immediately greeted by a shopping area with several locally-owned and operated shops. Sorry, you won’t find Diamonds International and the like but will find plenty of shops with Belizean goods, including a bottle shop where we acquired a sampling of Belizean rum.

Pro tip: Belize is a Caribbean Basin Initiative country, meaning US travelers can bring home a liter of Belizean rum in addition to the liter of alcohol you can bring back from other countries on your cruise.

From there, you can wander to the large, man-made beach. There are literally thousands of lounge chairs, many nestled under the palms. There are also cabanas and sunshades for rent if you want more shade or even air conditioning.

If the salt water is not your thing, there is a massive pool complex, again with plenty of lounge chairs and plenty of palm trees along with a restaurant and swim-up bar. Just a few steps away from the pool is the kids’ splash area, with water slides and water toys.

But What if I Don’t Want to Spend All My Time at the Beach/Pool?

For the more adventurous, there are several zip lines, including one from the lighthouse, allowing you to soar above the island (fee).

There’s also an area for renting a kayak or paddle board so you can go out to explore the saltwater lagoon on your own.

Lastly, there is a small wildlife park that has several small animals and birds, along with a butterfly enclosure. We really enjoyed seeing some of the native animals and birds. The wildlife park is well done but we would have loved to see more animals.

What About Food and Drink at Harvest Caye?

There are plenty of restaurants and bars on the island. Since we spent most of the day on a shore excursion, we did not get a chance to try any of them but they looked good.

There are two things to note: 1) as mentioned above, the food is not included, unlike Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas. You will need to bring cash or a card with you. Your Freestyle card is not accepted on the island. 2) Jimmy Buffett fans will be sad to know the island no longer has a Landshark Bar and Grill. I imagine that is due to the launch of the Margaritaville at Sea cruise line.

That said, if you don’t want to pay for a meal, just walk back to the boat! You can easily get on and off the boat throughout the day.

What Do I Do if I Want to Go to the Mainland Belize?

For some travelers, spending the day at a private beach resort is the perfect vacation day. For others, it is too confining and they want to explore.

There are two ways to get to the mainland: book a shore excursion through Norwegian or purchase ferry tickets from the shore excursion desk aboard the ship. There is limited capacity for the ferry, so make sure you get your tickets early.

The marina, where you can rent some personal watercraft as well, is where you will meet for your shore excursions and where you can pick up the ferry.

One of the main complaints about Harvest Caye is from travelers who want to really experience the country. Harvest Caye does make that a little more difficult than when docking in Belize City.

That said, cruising is hardly the way to truly experience a country. No matter your intention, it is simply not possible to experience a country in the time most cruise ships are in port. It is about getting a taste of that country if that’s what you want.

Shore Excursions from Harvest Caye

You will find several options for shore excursions from Harvest Caye. That said, the island’s location on the south end of the country does limit some of those excursions. Most folks won’t know the difference but having been to Belize twice before, I recognized a few missing opportunities due to location.

In particular, on my first trip to Belize (2004), I took a tour up the New River to the massive Mayan ruin complex of Lamanai. It was an excellent experience and I would do that tour again! I would not, however, try to do that shore excursion, even from a private vendor, from Harvest Caye. The distances involved would make missing the departure of the cruise ship a real possibility.

On my second trip to Belize (2015), Bonnie and I did a zip-lining trip and cave tubing in the rainforest with a couple of our friends and had a blast. It was a cool way to see the jungle and explore a local cave.

I am actually really looking forward to coming back to Belize so we can explore the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Preserve. This area is one of the best jaguar habitats in the world. There is an excellent book about the work that went into creating this wildlife preserve by Dr. Alan Rabinowitz called Jaguar . It’s an exceptional work that is presently out of print, so you might have trouble finding it. If you can find a copy, it would be great to read it before you visit Belize.

Rainforest River Tubing Shore Excursion

On this latest trip, we opted to do a rainforest river tubing excursion. It was an excellent experience.

We started our trip at the marina where we caught a catamaran ferry across to the mainland. From there, we picked up a bus for a drive through the countryside of Belize, getting to see various small towns along the way, with the mountains looming to the west.

As we turned towards the mountains, we passed through various fruit fields and headed into the jungle. The ride got a little rough but we didn’t mind. We arrived at the take-out point where we could rent lockers and pick up some snacks.

If there was one negative to our excursion, it was the lack of hearty food to buy for lunch. We were able to get some Pringles, a Snickers bar and a Belikin beer (tasty!) before heading upriver to the put-in for the tubes. A couple of Clif bars would have gone a long way in keeping us feeling well-fed and we wished we had them.

There were also not enough lockers to go around but we were able store our gear aboard the bus, so it was no big deal.

When it came time to put in, the guide leashed our tubes together and we had our guide with us in the water making sure we made it through the “rapids” just fine. There were a few minor rapids but nothing to worry about.

Seriously, the best part of this excursion was relaxing along the river and enjoying the jungle views. We didn’t see much in the way of wildlife but did see a termite colony up in a tree and several bats and birds.

The float lasted about 90 minutes and then we were able to change and grab another snack if we wanted one. Again, we enjoyed the bus ride back because it was a window tour of southern Belize.

Final Thoughts on Harvest Caye in Belize

What makes Harvest Caye such an improvement on tendering to Belize City is it truly offers cruise passengers a choice.

Do you want to spend the day enjoying a beach resort? You can. You don’t need to pay anything extra if you don’t want to. Want to spend the morning at the beach and then walk aboard for lunch? No problem!

Do you want to spend the day exploring a rural coastal town in Belize? You can. It will cost you a few extra bucks for a ferry but you can spend time on your own on the mainland. Do you want to take a shore excursion? The island has a great setup and organization for shore excursions.

Is Harvest Caye an “authentic” Belizean experience? Hardly. It’s a private beach resort. But every aspect, from the covered walkway to and from the pier to the spacing of the palm trees is well-engineered to make for a great customer experience. If you want an authentic Belizean experience, the best way would be to fly to the country and spend a week or two exploring and getting to know the people. As I said before, you simply aren’t going to get that on a cruise.

Still, we had a blast and really enjoyed the time we spent at Harvest Caye. If we return to Belize aboard a Norwegian ship, we will be excited to spend even more time on the island.

Travel Resources

What do you use to find a flight.

We use Skyscanner to find deals on flights. Skyscanner has a great interface and compares tons of airlines for the best pricing and routing. That said, it does not always have every airline and some airlines will have better deals on their website. Still, Skyscanner is a great place to start. Click here to search for a flight.

What do you use to find a hotel?

We typically stay at Hilton properties , so we use the Hilton website . You can find good Hilton Honors discounts or AAA discounts for a hotel there. We make great use of our free night certificates from our Hilton Honors American Express. Click here to book a Hilton property.

If there are no Hilton properties available, we use TripAdvisor to read reviews and book the hotel. We find we can get the best price that way. Click here to search for a hotel.

We recently partnered with Stay22 to add interactive maps to each of our destination posts. This will allow you to see a plethora of hotels and vacation rentals all in one responsive map of the area.

What if I need more space than I can get at a hotel?

We use Vrbo for the times when we have rented a cabin for a weekend getaway, like this cabin in Townsend, TN , or needed to rent a house for a large family vacation. We had a great experience with them in terms of refunding deposits when COVID hit and will continue to use them. Click here to search for a vacation rental.

Who do you use for rental cars?

As a general rule, we book with Hertz for rental cars. We have had nothing but good experiences with them. Plus, we really like unlimited mileage and not worrying about crossing state lines. We have even rented from Hertz overseas in both Slovenia and Croatia . Click here to book a rental car.

How about booking a cruise?

We have found some amazing prices for booking a cruise through Cruise Direct . We have saved a lot of money on our cruises compared to what we found elsewhere, making a last-minute Bahamas cruise even cheaper. Click here to book a cruise.

What if I want to rent an RV?

We highly recommend Outdoorsy for RV rentals. We rented a camper van for a week to visit Rocky Mountain National Park for the elk rut and Custer State Park for the Buffalo Round-Up and had a blast. The program was easy to use and we really enjoyed the freedom of having a camper van for that trip. Click here to rent an RV.

What do you use for booking tours?

We don’t often book tours. Typically, we like to do stuff on our own. That said, there are some experiences you can’t have any other way. So, when we do want to book a tour, we always check Viator first. Click here to book a tour.

Do you use anything to get discounts on the road?

We make extensive use of both Good Sam and AAA on the road. Good Sam is normally regarded as a discount card for RVers at campgrounds and Camping World but anyone can use the 5 cents off a gallon at the pump at both Pilot and Flying J. Click here to get a Good Sam membership. We have had AAA as long as we have been married and it has more than paid for itself in discounts at hotels, aside from the peace of mind of having roadside assistance. Add in paper maps and the ability to get an international driver’s license and it is more than worth it for any traveler out there. Click here to get a AAA membership.

Harvest Caye, Belize: Don’t Stay on the Ship

Harvest Caye, Belize, is one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s private islands in Southern Belize. If your cruise is docking in Harvest Caye and it’s your first time, don’t stay on the ship.

As we explored the resort-style delights of Harvest Caye, Belize, we couldn’t help but wonder—who doesn’t love a good resort? Despite mixed reviews about this “man-made” island during our cruise planning , we remained undeterred.

Our day at Harvest Caye was about relaxation, enjoying the beach, pool, exploration, and delicious food—a perfect vacation blend, wouldn’t you agree? While a stop at mainland Belize would have been nice (we went cave tubing last time), we were curious about Harvest Caye, ready for a sun-soaked day of fun.

Things to Do in Harvest Caye, Belize

What is included at harvest caye.

  • Dive into the resort experience on Harvest Caye with complimentary access to a pool and beach, complete with beach chairs for cruise guests.
  • Immerse yourself in a wildlife adventure featuring a butterfly garden and aviaries.
  • Let children play and have fun in the splash park—an entertaining water attraction for the little ones.

View of Harvest Caye Belize from Cruise Ship

Explore Harvest Caye—there’s no excuse to stay onboard unless you despise big, beautiful pools and beaches. Take a few hours to immerse yourself in what this island offers, supporting local businesses and contributing to the economy.

Harvest Caye is a safe and easily enjoyable destination.

From the moment we left the ship, we appreciated the covered walkway with fans with misters, providing a refreshing touch on hot days. Transportation is available for those who prefer not to walk or cannot.

Activities & Excursions at Harvest Caye

Pool at Harvest Caye Belize

We hit up the pool immediately. This resort-style pool on Norwegian’s private island is large and spacious. The area around it was clean and surrounded by lounge chairs that were taken up quickly.

Luckily, we found two seats close to the pool. After settling in, we ordered drinks from one of the servers nearby. There are plenty of servers to take your orders. A swim-up bar at the pool appeared to be very popular and busy all day.

Inside the blue waters of the pool at Harvest Caye Belize

Large misting fans were set up in two corners around the pool area. There are pool cabanas available for an extra cost, but note you have to book in advance.

The Beach at Harvest Caye

Sandy beach, blue sky and water at Harvest Caye Belize

The sand at Harvest Caye’s beach isn’t the softest. It was rough on our feet but not enough to keep us from heading into the salty warm water.

The beach was clean, and the water was clear enough to see my red-colored toenails. There is no need to worry about rough waves as they are calm and perfect for children to play in.

You can snorkel if you have your snorkeling gear, but we didn’t see anything besides sand and broken seashells. You have to swim farther out to see any fish or coral.

There is plenty of seating available for everyone at the beach.

You can also inquire about the ferry from Harvest Caye to the mainland at the excursion desk. There is one available but at an extra cost.

You can book an independent excursion if you make appropriate meetup arrangements on the mainland.

To be safe and guarantee you’re back on the ship on time, see what sponsored shore excursions the ship has available .

Cabanas and villas are also available -for a cost- throughout the island. Some even come with butlers.

Kayaking in Harvest Caye

Tip of a yellow kayak and a pair of feet pointing towards the lighthouse over the lagoon at Harvest Caye

This was the only excursion we booked for the day, and we had a great time. We only kayaked around the mangroves; it was fun and relaxing. Of course, hubby did all the paddling. ?I am not much of a kayaker.

Personally, for someone like me with little experience, I appreciated the peaceful waters and the safe perimeter the mangroves provided. You get to see the lighthouse, watch cruisers zip line across it, you’ll paddle past the rope course, and sometimes you’ll get to see a few starfish.

Watch our kayaking video below!

Other Activities

Besides hanging out at the pool or beach, you can also participate in one of their many activities:

  • Paddleboarding
  • Nature Center
  • Splash Zone for kids
  • Rope Course
  • Butterfly Exhibit

Next time, we’d like to try zip-lining. It looked like so much fun.

NCL as well offers other excursions. For more info, visit the ship’s shore excursion desk.

Tasty Itinerary: The Food at Harvest Caye

Frozen drink with cherry on top

Unlike other private islands owned by the cruise lines, food and drinks are not included. You must pay out of pocket, so bring cash or a credit card when you leave the ship. The cabin’s key card will not work as payment.

There are a few bars and restaurants available. We ate at LandShark Bar & Grill by the pool, which was pretty good. We shared fried plantains topped with pico de gallo, cotija cheese, and a basket of fried shrimp.

While it was good, we would have loved some local fare. We had the best Belizean tamales last year in Belize City and were hoping to find some local cuisine.  Everything was geared toward what they probably think tourists -the average American- like to eat.

Still, though, we enjoyed our lunch and drinks.

On the day we were there, they had a 2-for-1 margarita. I have a feeling that’s always the special of the day.

Note: Do not forget to close out your check with your server. Someone near us at the pool ditched their check and left the server high and dry. Not cool! Unfortunately, the check total had to come out of the server’s pocket.

Harvest Caye is a Port of Call for All Ages

We enjoyed Harvest Caye. Sure… it is geared toward tourists, but nothing is wrong with that.

There is something wonderful about getting off the ship without worries and walking right into paradise. I appreciated the small luxuries available, like big clean bathrooms.

Lockers are placed throughout to store personal belongings and were a huge help at one point. Sometimes it’s those details that make a difference.

Everyone you’re traveling with will be able to find something to do on the island. Some activities are extra, but what excursion isn’t at other ports?

This is a great port-of-call for all ages. It offers something for everyone.

You transported me again!!! You’re kind of making me want to go on a cruise now even though I have an irrational fear of cruises. ??

That tropical paradise looked lovely! I really liked the video too!

– Lauren Elena

Your comment means the world to me. I’m always wondered if sharing my experience is enough and if my writing is doing it justice. I also try to be honest with my posts, so it makes me happy to see comments like yours. Also, what do you fear about cruises? They are fun and relaxing. You should at least try it once. Plus, there are always some great deals to cruise and it includes a ton of yummy food! lol

You always transport me with your posts! I love them. And they are always so informative. If I ever travel to any of your spots, I will definitely be reading your posts again for trip research.

Cruise fears- hitting an iceberg or something else that will drown us, a stomach bug or food poisoning that affects a lot of passengers, forced fun with strangers (I’m antisocial (or I think I am but maybe I’m not that bad).

Awww thank you! Made my day. You’re anti-social. I’m finding that hard to believe. Perhaps we click because we are both anti-social and we somehow found each other on the world wide web. hehe.

This was great! Thanks for that! Question about kayaking though: from your video it looks like you’re only able to kayak in that small pond-like area. Is that true, or can you choose to go out further if you want? Thanks!

Hi Kay – The lagoon has a pretty big loop around and it was slightly challenging for us as kayaking beginners. You are kept within the confines of the lagoon and you can’t take the kayak outside of it to the bay. It was honestly a nice activity that lasted an hour and then you had time to go do other tings. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for stopping by and reading! -Kathy

Haha!! I can’t believe you are antisocial! No way!

You could be right! Maybe I’m more social on the web? ?

I’m introverted, so I don’t well socializing half the time. I do try. Usually extroverts adopt me OR I find another introvert just like me that understands me. I want to say it’s easier to be social on the web, to a point it is, but I find it so overwhelming sometimes.

I am the exact same way! No joke. I’ve never thought of it that way, but now that you mention that, I think I have probably been adopted throughout my life by more extroverted friends. That definitely helps! Is your husband an extrovert? I often think that I should find someone more extroverted but then I also think maybe I shouldn’t close the door on introverts. Idk?

My husband and I are celebrating milestone birthdays on NCL Escape in a couple of weeks. I was excited to find your blog specifically about Harvest Caye! The NCL website is not very informative so I had no idea it was an NCL island. We have booked the Mayan Spice and Ruins Tour excursion. I’ll let you know how it goes!

That sounds like fun! I believe you’ll be leaving the island for that excursion. Have a great time and report back! The NCL Escape is supposed to be amazing. My BFF was on it last year to Bermuda and loved it.

P.S. Happy Birthday to you and hubby!

Norwegian cruise line holdings unveils bold new vision for the future with strategic long term fleet expansion and enhanced private island development, plan includes next generation vessels for norwegian cruise line, oceania cruises, and regent seven seas cruises to be built by fincantieri, along with infrastructure enhancements for great stirrup cay, all while continuing its disciplined multi-year de-leveraging plan.

MIAMI, April 08, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NYSE: NCLH) (together with NCL Corporation Ltd., “Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings”, “Norwegian”, “NCLH” or the “Company”) today unveiled the most comprehensive new build order in its history—a total of eight state-of-the-art vessels, representing nearly 25,000 additional berths, with new classes of ships for each of its three award-winning brands—and the construction of a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the Company’s private island destination in the Bahamas and its top-rated Caribbean port of call. This unprecedented decade-long strategy enhances its product offering, guest experiences, and operational infrastructure, supporting the Company’s sustained leadership in delivering innovative cruise vacations.

The new ship orders across all three brands are scheduled for delivery over a ten-year period, between 2026 and 2036. Following the delivery of four Prima-Plus class ships from 2025 through 2028, Norwegian Cruise Line is expected to take delivery of four approximately 200,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of nearly 5,000 guests, in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, which are subject to financing 1 . Building on the success of its Allura Class ships, the last one being delivered in 2025, Oceania Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 86,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 1,450 guests in 2027 and 2029. Lastly, following the award-winning Explorer Class ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 77,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 850 guests, in 2026 and 2029. Details regarding the ships’ amenities, staterooms, dining, recreational, efficiency, sustainability and other features will be announced in the coming months.

"This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth. It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet,” said Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round.”

In partnership with the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, each brand will design their new ship class and focus on creating the largest, most efficient, and innovative vessels of their respective fleet. Aligning with the Company’s sustainability efforts, the new ship designs are expected to advance the journey towards decarbonization.

"Over the years, our long-standing relationship with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has been rooted in a shared vision for the future of maritime travel, consistently setting new standards for innovation, luxury, sustainability, and guest satisfaction in the cruise industry,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director at Fincantieri . “We are thrilled to work on these new build orders and deliver emblematic cruise ships that will embody our shared legacy of excellence for generations to come.”

The Company has obtained export credit financing with favorable terms to fund 80 percent of the contract price of each of the two Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships, subject to certain conditions. The ship orders for Norwegian Cruise Line remain subject to financing, currently underway.

Mark A. Kempa, chief financial officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, commented, “we expect that these strategic investments will secure our growth trajectory, significantly boost our earnings profile, and enhance shareholder value well into the future. With a favorable payment structure that includes pre-delivery financing and modest initial installment payments for these ship orders, we still anticipate strong Net Leverage reduction of 1.5 turns by the end of 2024, relative to 2023, and expect the Company to continue reducing Net Leverage each year for the foreseeable future.”

_______________ 1 Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. expects a four-ship Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) order to replace a separate, effective, two-ship order for Oceania Cruises initially placed to secure availability with the shipyard. The four-ship order for NCL is still being finalized and is subject to financing. Delivery for the second Oceania Cruises ship is contractually scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2028, but may be delayed to 2029. All expected delivery dates are preliminary and subject to change.

New Pier Development at Great Stirrup Cay

The new pier development at the Company’s private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay, is slated to break ground in summer 2024 and be completed by late 2025 with an investment of approximately $150 million. The new pier will be constructed to simultaneously accommodate two large vessels of the Company’s current and future ship classes. The pier development will enhance the guest experience on Great Stirrup Cay, and along with Harvest Caye, the Company’s private island in Belize, continue to provide guests with world-class destinations in the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

Conference Call

The Company has scheduled a conference call for Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time to discuss this announcement. A link to the live webcast along with a slide presentation can be found on the Company’s Investor Relations website at https://www.nclhltd.com/investors. All statements other than statements of historical facts contained, or incorporated by reference, in this release, including, without limitation, those regarding our business strategy, financial position, results of operations, plans, prospects, actions taken or strategies being considered with respect to our liquidity position, valuation and appraisals of our assets and objectives of management for future operations (including those regarding expected fleet additions, our expectations regarding the impact of macroeconomic conditions and recent global events, our expectations regarding cruise voyage occupancy, operational position, demand for voyages, plans or goals for our sustainability program and decarbonization efforts, our expectations for future cash flows and profitability, financing opportunities and extensions, and efforts to reduce operating expenses and capital expenditures) are forward-looking statements. Many, but not all, of these statements can be found by looking for words like “expect,” “anticipate,” “goal,” “project,” “plan,” “believe,” “seek,” “will,” “may,” “forecast,” “estimate,” “intend,” “future” and similar words. Forward-looking statements do not guarantee future performance and may involve risks, uncertainties and other factors which could cause our actual results, performance or achievements to differ materially from the future results, performance or achievements expressed or implied in those forward-looking statements. Examples of these risks, uncertainties and other factors include, but are not limited to the impact of: adverse general economic factors, such as fluctuating or increasing levels of interest rates, inflation, unemployment, underemployment and the volatility of fuel prices, declines in the securities and real estate markets, and perceptions of these conditions that decrease the level of disposable income of consumers or consumer confidence; implementing precautions in coordination with regulators and global public health authorities to protect the health, safety and security of guests, crew and the communities we visit and to comply with related regulatory restrictions; our indebtedness and restrictions in the agreements governing our indebtedness that require us to maintain minimum levels of liquidity and be in compliance with maintenance covenants and otherwise limit our flexibility in operating our business, including the significant portion of assets that are collateral under these agreements; our ability to work with lenders and others or otherwise pursue options to defer, renegotiate, refinance or restructure our existing debt profile, near-term debt amortization, newbuild related payments and other obligations and to work with credit card processors to satisfy current or potential future demands for collateral on cash advanced from customers relating to future cruises; our need for additional financing or financing to optimize our balance sheet, which may not be available on favorable terms, or at all, and our outstanding exchangeable notes and any future financing which may be dilutive to existing shareholders; the unavailability of ports of call; future increases in the price of, or major changes, disruptions or reduction in, commercial airline services; changes involving the tax and environmental regulatory regimes in which we operate, including new regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions; the accuracy of any appraisals of our assets; our success in controlling operating expenses and capital expenditures; trends in, or changes to, future bookings and our ability to take future reservations and receive deposits related thereto; adverse events impacting the security of travel, or customer perceptions of the security of travel, such as terrorist acts, armed conflict, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or the Israel-Hamas war, or threats thereof, acts of piracy, and other international events; public health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and their effect on the ability or desire of people to travel (including on cruises); adverse incidents involving cruise ships; our ability to maintain and strengthen our brand; breaches in data security or other disturbances to our information technology systems and other networks or our actual or perceived failure to comply with requirements regarding data privacy and protection; changes in fuel prices and the type of fuel we are permitted to use and/or other cruise operating costs; mechanical malfunctions and repairs, delays in our shipbuilding program, maintenance and refurbishments and the consolidation of qualified shipyard facilities; the risks and increased costs associated with operating internationally; our inability to recruit or retain qualified personnel or the loss of key personnel or employee relations issues; impacts related to climate change and our ability to achieve our climate-related or other sustainability goals; our inability to obtain adequate insurance coverage; pending or threatened litigation, investigations and enforcement actions; volatility and disruptions in the global credit and financial markets, which may adversely affect our ability to borrow and could increase our counterparty credit risks, including those under our credit facilities, derivatives, contingent obligations, insurance contracts and new ship progress payment guarantees; any further impairment of our trademarks, trade names or goodwill; our reliance on third parties to provide hotel management services for certain ships and certain other services; fluctuations in foreign currency exchange rates; our expansion into new markets and investments in new markets and land-based destination projects; overcapacity in key markets or globally; and other factors set forth under “Risk Factors” in our most recently filed Annual Report on Form 10-K and subsequent filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The above examples are not exhaustive and new risks emerge from time to time. There may be additional risks that we consider immaterial or which are unknown. Such forward-looking statements are based on our current beliefs, assumptions, expectations, estimates and projections regarding our present and future business strategies and the environment in which we expect to operate in the future. These forward-looking statements speak only as of the date made. We expressly disclaim any obligation or undertaking to release publicly any updates or revisions to any forward-looking statement to reflect any change in our expectations with regard thereto or any change of events, conditions or circumstances on which any such statement was based, except as required by law.

_______________ 2 The Company does not provide certain estimated future results on a GAAP basis because the Company is unable to predict, with reasonable certainty, the future movement of foreign exchange rates or the future impact of certain gains and charges. These items are uncertain and will depend on several factors, including industry conditions, and could be material to the Company’s results computed in accordance with GAAP. The Company has not provided reconciliations between the Company’s 2024 guidance and the most directly comparable GAAP measure because it would be too difficult to prepare a reliable U.S. GAAP quantitative reconciliation without unreasonable effort.
