There are multiple factors that influence the price of a flight so comparing airlines, departure airports and times can help keep costs down.

The last two weeks of December are particularly busy in O’ahu. The summer school vacation brings a lot of families to O’ahu, but you can get better travel deals on airline tickets and hotel rates than in winter.

Off Season:

The best rates are available in the spring and fall, mid-April to mid-June and September to mid-December. However, if you’re coming in the spring, book your reservations early as the last week in April is Japan’s Golden Week (four national holidays in one week), and the islands are very busy with Japanese visitors.

Entertainment

We paid $161 for two exit row seats thinking there’d be extra leg room and not be cramped! The price we paid was a rip-off for these seats and the plane was extremely narrow and cramped. The male crew were okay but not super-friendly. When we picked up our luggage at baggage claim, someone ripped my luggage with a knife or blunt object and destroyed it!! I will be filling a claim for this and took pictures. I heard great reviews about this airline but am disappointed.

Welcome to Honolulu. Grab a lei and a Mai Tai and settle in to a relaxing vacation on the shores of O’ahu. Hawaii’s capital city is the center of the island’s tourism and financial growth, but there’s more to this city than luau’s and the hula.

Surfers dream of flights to Honolulu for a chance to catch the waves off Waikiki Beach. Considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Waikiki attracts about four million visitors each year. Along with swimming, surfing and sunbathing, weekend beachgoers can enjoy Sunset on the Beach, free movies shown on a 30-foot screen.

Geologists book Honolulu flights armed with cameras and notebooks to explore the extinct famous volcano, Diamond Head, and take a look at authentic Polynesian artifacts.  Families and friends find cheap flights to Hawaii for an island-getaway that rivals most U.S. beach destination spots.

Away from the beach, the city is home to the Bishop Museum, Hawaii’s largest museum, founded in 1889 in honor of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family. The Honolulu Academy of Arts boasts more than 50,000 works, and the Lyon Arboretum is a 198-acre botanical garden, the only university botanical garden located in a tropical rain forest in the U.S.

Find a quiet spot on one of the golden beaches and watch the tranquil turquoise waters wave as visions of hula dancers parade in your head. Grab your jasmine-scented lei and start exploring. Honolulu is the largest city in Hawaii, but there’s more to this state’s capital than congested highways and crowded hotels. Visitors booking flights to Honolulu will find themselves immersed in rainforests, exploring canyons and mesmerized by breathtaking waterfalls.

The museums and historic and cultural sites are more reasons to book Honolulu  airline tickets , and will immerse you in Hawaiian culture and lore.

A holiday to Honolulu will also take travelers back in time to one of America’s most pivotal moments. Just a short drive from Honolulu is Pearl Harbor, where on December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacks on this island brought the United States into World War II.

The flight to Honolulu is quite long – at least 10 hours from New York – so grab yourself a couple good novels and recent tour guide of Hawaii and relax…you’re on your way to paradise.

Getting to and around the city of Honolulu

Tips for your stay in Honolulu

  • The  Arizona Memorial Museum straddles the tomb of the 1,177 sailors and Marines trapped below deck when the battleship sank, marking the worst disaster in U.S. naval history. It’s a somber and moving experience. Admission is free, and tickets are handed out on a first-come first-served basis. On a busy day, tickets are gone by noon.
  • The newly opened Science Adventure Center of the  Bishop Museum is not to be missed. It has 30 exhibits where you can experience adventures such as walking into a volcano, operating mini subs in a “deep sea” tank, and creating tsunamis. The museum’s other permanent exhibits include the Hawaiian and Polynesian Halls, Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame, Planetarium, and Maritime Center.
  • Downtown Honolulu’s historic  Chinatown is a mix of Asian cultures. There are brilliant colors everywhere, a Buddhist temple, a Japanese shrine, herb and Chinese grocery shops, art galleries, restaurants, an open market where tangy spices rule the cuisine, ever-present scent of burning incense, acupuncturists, and herbalists. Every day the area is bustling with busy residents and meandering visitors from all over the world and a rich mix of sounds, from the traffic to the high-pitched talking of vendors to the retired men “talking story” over a game of mah-jong. When you’re here, make sure to check out the lei sellers on Maunakea Street, where Hawaii’s finest leis go for bargain prices.
  • Botanical gardens abound on Oahu. The Foster Botanical Garden, in downtown Honolulu, is the oldest of the  Honolulu Botanical Gardens and has magnificent trees that were planted in the 1800s. The 27-acre Wahiawa Botanical Garden is a tropical rain forest.  Senator Fong’s Plantation and Gardens  is 725 acres of scenic valleys and plateaus of landscape that is relatively the same as what early Polynesians saw when they came to Hawaii. And this is just three of many gardens on Oahu.
  • The  Byodo-In Temple is a replica of the Byodoin Temple in Uji, Japan. A three-ton brass temple bell brings good luck to those who can ring it. The highlight is the nine-foot Lotus Buddha, the largest wooden Buddha carved in over 900 years. The Temple grounds include traditional Japanese gardens, a two-acre koi pond, and wandering peacocks. (The Temple was used as a filming location in the first season of the ABC drama series  Lost .)
  • The weather is usually perfect for a walk. The island has over 20  trails that take you through rain forests, mountain forests, dry valleys, and gulches. Or create your own walking tour in Honolulu or Waikiki—the  Oahu Web site  has great suggestions for attractions to visit in the city.
  • Golfing on  Oahu is a unique experience. The rough might be rain forest or lava rock, the constant wind highlights all mistakes, and the ground is harder, which means that the ball runs off the tee more and doesn’t stop as quickly on the greens. Smokers beware. It’s against the law to smoke in public buildings and restaurants, including the airports, grocery stores, retail shops, movie theaters, banks, and government buildings and facilities. Most bed-and-breakfast establishments also prohibit smoking.
  • Don’t miss a trip to the  Science Adventure Center which has 30 unique exhibits which allow visitors to experience walking into a volcano, operating mini subs in a “deep sea” tank, and creating tsunamis. Other permanent exhibits at the museum include the Hawaiian and Polynesian Halls, Planetarium, Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame and Maritime Center.
  • Historic  Chinatown offers visitors the chance to experience a mix of different cultures from Asia. There’s a Buddhist temple, a Japanese shrine, herb and Chinese shops, art galleries, restaurants, an open market where tangy spices rule the cuisine, acupuncturists, and herbalists. While there, stop by and watch the wonderful lei sellers on Maunakea Street.
  • There are several botanical gardens in Oahu. In Honolulu’s city center is the oldest of the gardens, the  Foster Botanical Garden , has trees that were planted in the 19th century while the Wahiawa Botanical Garden is a tropical rain forest. Senator Fong’s Plantation and Gardens is set on 25 acres of valleys and plateaus of landscape.
  • Visit the replica of the  Byodoin Temple in Uji, Japan. According to legend the brass temple bell brings good luck to those who can ring it. There’s a stunning nine-foot Lotus Buddha, the largest wooden Buddha carved in more than 900 years. Traditional Japanese gardens, a two-acre koi pond, and wandering peacocks make up the Temple’s grounds. Outdoor enthusiasts have more than 20 walking trails to choose from that take you through rain forests, mountain forests and dry valleys.
  • Playing golf on rain forest or lava rock – in Oahu this is possible and makes for quite a challenging game because the ground is harder and the ball runs off the tee more easily.

As the main gateway to Hawaii, Honolulu International Airport (HNL) is one of the busiest airports in the United States, with 21 million travelers passing through it each year. The airport is busy with old-fashioned terminal buildings that haven’t changed much since they were built in the 1960s.

There are three terminals at Honolulu Airport, and as the airport is not as well-signed as it could be, transferring between them can be very confusing. The Commuter Terminal and the Interisland Terminal serve smaller regional airlines. The Interisland Terminal also sees some flights to and from the US mainland and Hawaiian Airlines’ international flights. The Overseas Terminal, also called the International Terminal, serves all other international arrivals and departures.

The city of Honolulu, about five miles (8km) from the airport, has more than 1 million inhabitants and is as bustling as any major city. Although you might want to go further afield for that remote-island holiday, it’s a warm and hospitable first experience of Hawaii.

What are some things to do in Honolulu?

Use Honolulu as your base to explore all of the island of Oahu. Within Honolulu, you should definitely make a quick visit to the famous Waikiki Beach, but don’t expect to see the broad expanse of white sand you may have seen in movies, as 1992’s Hurricane Iniki swept much of the beach out to sea. Treat yourself to brunch at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Waikiki to get a flavor of what Old Hawaii was like, or return in the evenings for the nightlife along the Waikiki strip. If you’re traveling with kids, calm waters make Ala Moana Beach Park are a great place to spend the afternoon, and don’t miss the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve for amazing snorkeling among Hawaii’s underwater creatures. A tour of the Iolani Palace also lets you explore Hawaiian history, taking you back to the days when the islands were a monarchy. For another piece of history, take a boat into the center of Pearl Harbor, where you can view the remains of the U.S.S. Arizona underwater. Being in Hawaii is all about the outdoors, and not only the beach. While you can see the famous Diamond Head mountain from almost any vantage point in Honolulu, strap on your hiking shoes to climb it and look back in the other direction. Oahu’s North Shore is definitely worth a visit as well, especially if you’re a surfer, since it hosts some of the best waves on the island. Plan a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center to enjoy native art and performances not only from Hawaii but from Polynesian cultures and islands across the Pacific. On your way to the North Shore, stop in at the Dole Pineapple Plantation to enjoy some fresh pineapple ice cream. If you’re a fan of mazes, the largest one in the world is right here on the plantation.

Arriving at Honolulu

Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, is one of the prime vacation destinations in the United States, with its beautiful beaches and booming tourist industry. It is not difficult to find cheap airfare to Honolulu.

Your flight to Honolulu will arrive at the Honolulu International Airport. It is one of the busiest airports in the United States and serves as a hub for Hawaiian Airlines, which offers air travel between the many islands. The airport also features 24-hour medical services, dining, shopping, and access to various types of public transportation.

Getting around Honolulu

There are many ways to get around Honolulu and Oahu. You can of course rent a car, as there are many highways connecting the island’s towns. Keep in mind that the use of a horn in Hawaii is considered very rude unless there is an emergency.

If you prefer to sit back and do some sightseeing while someone else drives, you have many options available to you in the form of public transportation. In Honolulu there is a bus system, aptly named TheBus, not to mention shuttle services and taxis. And don’t forget the Waikiki Trolley for a fun way to explore the island.

Main Attractions in Honolulu

There are so many things to do when visiting Honolulu, whether you enjoy relaxing on the beach, exploring history, or something slightly more adventurous.

If sun, sand, and surf are your interests, be sure to visit Waikiki Beach, with its beautiful views and clear water. For those of you who enjoy military history, set aside some time to visit Pearl Harbor, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, and the Arizona Memorial. Hiking enthusiasts should check out Manoa Falls and Diamond Head State Monument. Families should head over to the Honolulu Zoo and Atlantis Submarines.

Dining, Shopping, and Nightlife on Honolulu

Southwest Airlines is proud to serve Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

When you deplane in Honolulu, you’ll quickly see why the city was named “Sheltered Harbor” and “Calm Port." Now one of the most remote major cities in the world, Honolulu and the surrounding area are still home to awe-inspiring natural wonders. You’ll want to start your adventure in the Big Pineapple as soon as you step off the plane.

A trip to Hawaii would be incomplete without getting your fill of sun and sand. When your destination is Honolulu, you can’t go wrong by choosing Waikiki Beach as your oceanside site. Grab a beach blanket and some sunscreen and lay out for the day or take a surfing lesson with iconic Diamond Head as your background. If you find this popular beach too active for your style of sun worship, check out one of the other six beaches in the Waikiki neighborhood, which include Queen’s Beach and Kuhio Beach.

If you’d prefer to immerse yourself in the city itself, consider starting with the Hawaii Capital Historic District. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, you can explore the grounds of Iolani Palace, St. Andrew’s Cathedral, and the Hawaii State Library. After exploring the past, see what the present has to offer with a visit to the Arts District. Art galleries and theaters abound in this neighborhood, so consider taking in a show during your visit.

Hungry for more Honolulu? Indulge in some traditional island cuisine. Hawaiian food is a distinctive combination of flavors brought to the islands by settlers and immigrants. Coconut, sweet potato, and taro root feature heavily, as do fish and other seafood. Of course, there are also dishes made of perhaps the most infamous brand of canned meat, which was first introduced to the Hawaiian islands by way of World War II soldiers’ rations. Try to get a taste of native dishes and new, modern Hawaiian cuisine during your visit.

Get ready for your adventure in the Crossroads of the Pacific by booking a flight with Southwest. Southwest Airlines ® flies to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, making your excursion even easier to begin. And when you book with Southwest, you can book with confidence, knowing that the process will be straightforward from flight selection to checkout. Of course, having a memorable trip is about more than finding a great deal on a flight. Learn more about the Southwest ® Experience and book your next flight to Daniel K. Top 5 airlines flying to Honolulu

I’m a first time mom and traveled with my 18mo old boy and it was not a great experience with the flight attendants. They were not friendly or helpful at all. It’s hard enough traveling with a toddler and have people be rude and unkind does not help.

It was adequate nothing special no entertain because flight was short. Crew pleasant.

It was fine… Just overbooked every seat was taken and very bumpy nothing they could do about that. Overall I like to fly Alaska airlines

Seat width is getting ridiculous. I don’t like having to twist myself into a ball to avoid my neighbor. It has gotten so bad over the last few years.

Good! Although I wish I didn’t have to check my bag at the gate, when I got on the plane there was plenty of room for the bag.

Flight had mechanical delay, but otherwise it was good considering it was a full plane. Did not have food or entertainment. Staff were great.

My experience with Alaska Airlines flights is dominated by the fact that today’s economy class is barely humane. Everyone is so tightly packed together that one cannot move an inch for the entire flight…. and if it’s a bicoastal trip, that’s almost five hours of discomfort!! And if you’re above average in height and/or weight it’s absolute hell! Moreover, still all Economy classes are basically the same across airline carriers, it doesn’t matter who you fly with.

The cabin stewart took care of my garment bag and then made sure I did not forget it on my way out. The stewardess gave me water after I missed the earlier service (I was asleep). I received good service overall.

Excellent service and prices. I was not award of inflight entertainment.

Both flights from NYC to SFO were delayed more than an hour. No wifi, no screens/movies etc. The crew was nice.

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

public website still broken for years randomly blocking browsers with privacy options active after loading a page maybe once. check-in on laptop was almost impossible but eventually randomly worked. had to print pass at airport since couldn't get back in to load digital pass on mobile firefox or chrome. red eye flight so smooth onboarding, plenty of room to spread out, easy offboarding. onboard wifi instructions mention vpn can cause problems connecting but fails to also mention private dns. no printed or built in menu list, seems weird to require personal device to point at qr code link for menu which does not even allow direct ordering. people with health condition risk related dietary restrictions trying to avoid for example cholesterol and sugar are left guessing what they can order either way without nutritional info highlights (cranberry juice was minute maid cocktail with as much suger as typical can of soda). tap to pay wasn't working and always seems sketchy to manually enter card info. good movie variety, so limited tv was okay.

The landing was bad and the hostess came two times and i was sleeping but when she served the person that nexts to me I woke up and she didn’t even asked me if I need any drink or snacks two times!!!!

Bag drop off was slow and annoying. Only 2 agents at the entire delta desk, and no one directing traffic for what line to be in, many confused people slowed down the process. Boarding was fine. Seats in Delta comfort plus were fine. Snacks were great! Definitely a bonus. The entertainment system was awful — old, slow, not responsive, and completely unable to play games due to some kind of error. But on the other hand, thank you to Delta for the free WiFi. That made it better.

The seats are too hard for long flights but otherwise- the process was smooth, the staff attentive, and there was to keep you occupied during the journey if needed.

Plane was late because of a mechanical malfunction and the food listed as available was not. Flight attendants seem over worked and under paid. They just done seem happy. And that can be seen in their faces.

Flight diverted in SD. Later take off in Seattle by 1.3hrs

Waited 3 hours on a plane to de-ice due to manpower issues. Waited another hour and a half once we landed because of a gate issue. Missed my connections. Created. A total of 13 hours of delay.

Flight was on time and in fact arrived early. Seating was as comfortable as you can get in coach. Adequate leg room. Good entertainment system and offerings. Food was good. Flight staff was very good and accommodating.

Mi primera conexión se retrasó por lo cual perdí mi segunda conexión la cual salió adelantada

The plane is extremely loud and there’s no place to charge devices.

Safety record impeccable and important since flying many hours and thousands of miles over ocean.

Love the food service and attentiveness of the crew. Could have wi-if on flight

Seats on second leg from Hawaii to Tokyo would not recline. 9 hrs is long in total upright position.

Apparently the computer systems were down, so I wasn’t able to check in 24 hours in advance, despite multiple times on the app, the website, and by calling. Then I arrived at the airport and wasn’t assigned a seat right away. I had to wait until I was at the gate and waited about another hour for an agent. She was nice to give me a “free upgrade.“.

The crew worked to help us find standby seats and we were able to arrive at our destination early which was great. Only drawback is airport at Kona which is in need of update - waiting at gate passengers exposed to jet fumes, there’s only one restaurant with minimal choices, etc

Increased effort to keep family members (purchasing multiple tickets in the same transaction) sitting together. Additionally, when faced with choosing seats at the automated check-in kiosk, only exit row seats charging an additional $9 were available, but if you decline to choose seats, it picks seats that are NOT exit row. How does that work, Hawaiian?

It was wonderful. I have never flown Hawaiian Airlines, but I would definitely do it again. They were wonderful.

I finished with my medical appointment early on Oahu and the Hawaiian airlines staff helped me get an earlier flight back to the big island. It was a great experience. There was no food or entertainment that is why I gave it a good

Unable to check in on line both directions. After standing in line to check in at the Honolulu airport we were told that we needed an ag inspection first so ended up having to stand in line twice. Fortunately we always arrive early. Process could be more clearly marked

Another horrible Jet Blue experience. This airline has suffered the biggest decline of all from best to worst. TVs didn’t work (again). internet was temperamental. Boarded late and couldn’t get organized to serve snacks.

I hate their constant delays! It’s as if I cannot confidently make plans for timing when I'm traveling with them. I slept through it, so all I can say is it was good.

From bag drop to boarding, it was great. In-flight is a little different. The seats were a little uncomfortable for that long of a flight. The rest of the cabin crew except for Eva was wonderful. Eva was not friendly at all. I've had to personally encounter her twice in-flight. First time was when I had to go to the lavatory in the back of the plane, and since it was the first for me to board such tiny plane, I didn't know we were using the crew toilet. She was giving me an attitude while telling me where and how to open it since it's not the regular push to open type of door. The second one was when I had to throw trash then use the lavatory again. I asked where to throw them, and unfortunately she was the only crew in the back doodling on her phone, she had to point it out to me with an attitude then told me to wait on the carpet, which I understand because I didn't realize that, but she could have been nicer. After all, I'm a paying customer, and assisting a passenger who isn't knowledgeable about the aircraft is one of the things she's there for. The rest of the experience and crew from bag drop to in-flight were excellent except for her.

It took an hour to get my bag after landing. Not exaggerating

We flew halfway to our destination (NYC to Burlington) and turned around due to a mechanical issue (landing gear wouldn’t retract automatically). We turned back to JFK for JetBlue’s benefit as we landed safely at JFK and could've just as easily landed safely in Burlington on our Christmas Day flight. Instead the company directed the crew to return the plane to more easily service the aircraft. The passengers landed 3 1/2 hours later and JetBlue gave each passenger $50 for the trouble. Hardly fair compensation to be separated from family on Christmas Day.

I had a horrible experience with TSA at the airport. I had to go through TSA several times as there was some issue each time with a piece if clothing I had on. It was so busy & chaotic that I ended up forgetting my Apple laptop at TSA. It’s been days & I can’t get through to anyone to get useful info on how to get it back. I’m very angry because contacting lost & found shouldn’t be this difficult. Employees should know what is going on at their place of work. It seems no one knows as everyone’s answers are contradictory, or you can’t speak directly to anyone as the calls are automated. Very upsetting.

No food/drink were offered. There was no Flyfi service. The screen size & quality were below JetBlue’s typical standards. The flight was delayed by an hour.

Everything was good instead change the gates! I missed my first flight because it was changed the gate and I didn’t know!

The new seats JetBlue uses angle downwards, so the entire flight you are sliding forward out of your own seat. These seats suck!

They pulled our pilots for "another" flight and delayed us without any compensation.

I wish that seats closer to the front of the plan were available, but when I booked the flight the seats were VERY expensive so I did not book seats at that time. The day before flying only seats at the back of the plane were available. It takes so long to board the plane and empty the plane on arrival due to SO many roller bags.

I was seated next to someone so obese I had no space and was pushed against the window. I could not even put my tray down or work. My neck still hurts from that experience. They should not let that happen. Large people should have to pay for enough space.

Good flight. No I’m seat entertainment. But my phone worked just fine on the west jet app.

I had planned to watch the Westjet entertainment for the entire flight however, because the seat mounted outlets in our row did not work.

Not a bad flight but our priority tagged luggage was the very last to come down the carousel.

Plane had a flat tire, delayed boarding and takeoff but one in the air, smooth. Make sure you have downloaded the WJ app before you leave. When on board, you can watch movies or TV shows offered on the app, it passed the time very quickly.

A good set of flights but my suitcase was irreparably damaged. (Hard shell suitcase with multiple full layer cracks from one corner all the way to the zipper) I needed to rush to catch a ferry so I didn’t notice it until it was loaded into a taxi. It cost over $100 USD to replace the suitcase to travel home.

Our recent flight from edmontown to kahalui was excellent. The service staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, funny and attentive. Thanks to all involved that made or travel such a pleasant experience and we hope to fly with west jet again soon

The flight was delayed and I missed boarding my 7 day cruise. I had to book a separate flight home

Flight late …60 minutes No food No wifi No entertainment system A disaster!!!

This freshman is fearless.

Hinano Bautista fired a four-hitter as No. 3 Mililani routed No. 2 Campbell 11-1 for a five-inning, TKO win on a cloudy, cool evening at Tiger Softball Stadium.

The win lifted the Lady Trojans into sole possession of first place in the rugged OIA West. Mililani (10-1) has one game remaining against Kapolei, on Saturday. Campbell (9-2) will visit Nanakuli on Tuesday.

Mililani clinched a first-round bye with the win. The top two teams in the West earn byes in the OIA Division I playoffs.

“I feel good. I’m very proud of them, of how they played and stuck together. It was a complete game for us. We never had this type of game yet this season,” Mililani coach Rose Antonio said. “Campbell’s a good team. It’s a couple of games now that Hinano’s gotten the start. We’re trying to get as much pitching in for her and our other pitchers. She’s a very good player. Positive attitude and poised. Great energy. I think (coach) Walter (Ka‘aihili) mixed it up well. In the beginning of the season she was a closer for us.”

The Trojans were in bomb-squad mode with four home runs. Taryn Hirano, Makayla Pagampao, Kaui Garcia and Bautista each launched a homer for the Lady Trojans. It could have been five taters if not for a magnificent catch at the center field fence by Campbell outfielder Kayla Whaley, who was injured on the play.

“In practice, we hit a lot (of home runs), but I think this is the first time I’ver ever seen so many,” Bautista said.

Bautista was in command of all five of her pitches — fastball, riser, changeup, curve and screwball. There weren’t any jitters playing under the lights, or before a statewide TV audience, for the freshman.

“Maybe a little butterflies in the beginning, but no, we don’t really mind the cameras. We’re just ourselves being funny and hilarious,” Bautista said. “I’m the fun one on the team. I can be silly, but when it comes to the games and practices, I’m ready.”

Campbell won the first meeting between the teams, 11-9, on March 16 in a night-time battle also held at McKinley’s facility.

The Lady Trojans struck almost instantly at game time. Leadoff hitter Hirano lined an 0-1 pitch over the right field fence to give Mililani a 1-0 lead. Mililani got two runners on base with two outs, but pitcher Kaienna Fuentes-Arellano retired Pagampao on a towering infield pop-up.

The Trojans chased Fuentes-Arellano in the top of the third inning. Kamyrn Aoki led off with a single, and with one out stole second base. On the next pitch, Kolbi Kochi lined an opposite-field single to right field, scoring Aoki for a 2-0 Mililani lead.

Campbell’s second pitcher, Kaira Sakai, retired Jerrell Mailo on a pop-up for the second out, but Pagampao bombed a 1-0 fastball high and beyond the center field fence. That boosted the Trojans’ lead to 4-0.

With Bautista in cruise control, the Trojans broke the game open with six more runs in the top of the fourth, powered by two home runs. Tanela Simanu led off with a single, and Bautista followed with a single. Hirano’s single to left scored Simanu from second base. Aoki followed with what appeared to be a bad-hop single to left, but courtesy runner Kaylie Kihara was ruled out for runner’s interference.

The next batter, Garcia, swatted a three-run homer to center field, opening the lead to 8-0. Whaley had a chance to make a difficult play as she retreated, but the ball popped out of her glove as she crashed into the fence. She was injured on the play but remained in the game.

Fuentes-Arellano returned to the pitcher’s circle, walked Kochi, then surrendered a home run to center by Mailo. The Trojans led 10-0.

Opportunity arrived for Campbell in the bottom of the fourth. Nanea Pantastico and Sophie Alo singled, and Breena Malama walked to load the bases with two outs. Fuentes-Arellano then fouled off four pitches with a two-strike count before finally drawing a walk from Bautista. Quinn Waiki, who had reached base on a fielder’s choice, scored from third base.

Bautista then got Keyra Moses-Fuller to pop out, ending the inning.

The southpaw then capped her night with a solo home run over the center field in the top of the fifth inning. The next batter, Hirano, sent a fly ball to left that tailed into foul ground, where Campbell left fielder Joy Freitas made a spectacular diving catch near the fence. Two batters later, Garcia walloped a deep fly ball that Whaley managed to catch as she flipped over the center field fence. Whaley was injured again, this time unable to rise to her feet for several minutes.

Airbnb rentals could be harder to come by in Hawaii. Here’s why and when that might happen

Hawaii lawmakers are hoping that phasing out short-term rentals could help ease its worsening housing crisis, where locals face the highest housing costs in the nation and one of the worst rates of homelessness .

Two bills that would allow for new regulation of “transient accommodations” have moved readily through the state legislature this spring, and if passed, could provide new avenues to limit the short-term home rental industry, which has exploded in recent years across the state’s four populated islands.

But the issue has been a challenging one for officials in cities and states across the U.S. — including Los Angeles , New York , Nashville and Bozeman, Mont. — who have looked for ways to rein in the ballooning popularity of Airbnb and other online home rental platforms without eliminating the economic benefits that such properties draw.

In Hawaii, last summer’s Maui wildfires have uniquely forced attention on the housing crisis — which was reaching a critical juncture even before the fires displaced thousands. Proponents of the short-term rental phase-outs hope this new sense of urgency could help push these bills into law in the coming weeks.

Here’s a look at how the bills could affect locals and visitors, and how soon.

What would these bills do?

The two companion bills, HB1838 and SB2919, would give counties new authority to change residential zoning, including the power to phase out short-term renting.

It’s important to note, though, that even if these bill pass, nothing would happen overnight. County officials — some of whom have said they want to change how short-term rentals are used and others who have previously tried to change such regulations — would have to adopt new rules to limit rentals. If they enact a phase-out, officials say, it would probably go into effect over several years.

“The bill does not enact anything specific to the regulation of those properties,” said state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole, one of the co-authors on the Senate bill. “It simply ... makes it clear that the counties do have the authority to regulate vacation rentals if they choose.”

The bills essentially provide the needed legal framework for counties to limit short-term rentals in a variety of ways. Honolulu officials attempted to redefine the length of a short-term rental in 2022, but a federal judge recently ruled that current state law barred them from doing so.

After Lahaina fire, 16 relatives crowd into one Maui house

Jowel and Relyn Delfin have taken 13 relatives into their central Maui home.

Aug. 21, 2023

State Rep. Luke Evslin, the chair of the House Committee on Housing, said even if these bills pass, they probably won’t eliminate short term rentals on the islands. Instead, Evslin said, the legislation would give local governments opportunities to define the neighborhoods where tourists could rent short-term units and, ideally, free up more homes for locals seeking long-term rentals. He said it won’t solve the state’s growing housing crisis, but he thinks it’s a first step to “stem the bleeding.”

“I think it’s one of the steps that we need to take to try and solve our housing crisis,” Evslin said, an author of the House bill. “On Kauai, for example, more units are becoming vacation rentals every year than we are building annually, so we have literally declining housing stock on Kauai, and the same thing is happening on Maui — even pre-fire.”

But a long battle looms

The bills’ supporters include many local housing nonprofits, hotel companies and local leaders, including Maui Councilmember Keani Rawlins-Fernandez.

“People are moving by the droves because there is no housing,” Rawlins-Ferandez said. She said it’s taken too long for officials to regulate the short-term rental industry, which has created this challenging fight with increasingly powerful interests.

There’s also a broad swath of opponents, including local homeowners who also rent units or rooms, Realtor groups, rental alliances and rental platforms. All of these groups have a financial interest in preserving property owners’ ability to do short-term rentals.

Peopls sit outdoors on a grassy area.

Airbnb’s Alex April, head of the company’s public policy for Hawaii, didn’t expressly oppose the legislation in her statement to legislators, but mentioned concerns including the financial losses that the state could see. April also cited ongoing work between Airbnb and Hawaii counties to help limit illegal renting, which has included memorandums of understanding to remove properties not operating within the law.

“We remain committed to working with you on fair and reasonable solutions that protect the rights of hosts and preserve the significant benefits that short-term rentals provide to Hawaii communities,” April’s statement said.

Airbnb also hired Hawaii’s former attorney general, David Louie , to argue against the bills, claiming in a lengthy testimony that the measures, if passed, could result in lawsuits challenging its constitutionality.

“Both Hawaii and federal litigation [have] recognized the principle that all preexisting uses of land are protected,” Louie wrote. A judge would not accept such changes to short-term rental zoning, he argued, because of how units have operated for years, leading to “substantial and unnecessary litigation.”

Elvsin insisted that the bills are constitutional, but noted it will depend how counties chose to implement possible phase-outs if any further legal fight follows.

Why is this important now?

Months after the Maui wildfires, hundreds of displaced families are still living in hotels. Officials hope they will be relocated to long-term housing by this summer — a deadline that has continued to be extended.

Keohokalole, the state senator, said he wants to see the end of a system that has been “pushing local people out of their residential communities in favor of economic activity.”

“We’re seeing the wholesale conversion of residential communities in Hawaii, to speculative, short term rental development,” he said.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, after his annual state of the state address in January, said he was going to put “a lot of pressure” to curb short-term rentals because “that market should be for our local families,” according to the Associated Press. A majority of short-term rental owners don’t live in Hawaii, according to the governor.

Green, in a statement to The Times, said he supports the two bills going through the legislature that would allow for phasing-out such rentals.

“They would provide the counties with more tools to address vacation rentals in areas where they don’t want these operations to continue,” a spokesperson for Green said in a statement. “Gov. Green is open to additional changes to ensure that we can control the proliferation of illegal vacation rentals, to mitigate the years-long housing crisis that is causing local residents, our workforce of teachers, firefighters and other essential workers, to leave the islands.”
