The Human League and Marc Almond heading to Dreamland next Summer

The Human League and Marc Almond will be performing on Dreamland’s Scenic Stage next Summer.

The Human League is best known for a song they never wanted to release as a single but that went on to become the biggest seller of 1981. “Don’t You Want Me.”

Some 40 years later, The Human League continue to make and share the best of electronic music.

The original lineup of Joanne Catherall, Phil Oakey and Susan Ann Sulley will be playing at the Scenic Stage on Friday 21st July 2023.

Support will come from special guest Marc Almond. He is an internationally acclaimed and successful artist, who originally found fame as half of the New Wave duo Soft Cell. Marc has sold more than 30 million records worldwide.

What an unexpected great double bill . Just the type of bands / singers that we should be attracting to Margate . I think that a great time will be had by all going to it . See you there ! Lol

Pleased also to see that the tickets are priced as starting from a reasonable £35 which is really good value for a double bill like this

forty years too late for me , these bands dont improve with age

Some do ! 80’s bands like ABC , OMD , A-ha and Tears for Fears are all bands that I’ve seen in recent years on more than one occasion and they’re all better than ever ! In fact-checkout the latest album out this year “ The Tipping Point” by Tears for Fears which is amazing,has no filler and well up with anything they’ve made before ,just a shame that at the last minute the band had to cancel their show this July at Kent cricket ground ,Canterbury due to Curt Smith breaking his ribs in freak injury on the tour bus Hopefully they’ll play here again in Kent ( Margate ? ) on their next UK tour . Another 80’s act that nowadays put on a good show are Bananarama who have an excellent backing band ,check out their live double Cd at Hammersmith Apollo to hear what they’re like now I’d like to see them at Dreamland one day The only 80’s act big disappointment I’ve had was seeing Tom Bailey’s Thompson Twins who was embarrassingly bad and he should call it a day to his live shows

By far the worst act I saw during my time at the WG was N-Dubz! They just didn’t know how to present themselves, and when there was a brief technical problem they were literally just standing there twiddling their thumbs (an old pro like Marty Wilde or Frank Allen from The Searchers would’ve told a funny anecdote or two!). Still, Tulisa was very pretty.

Best 80s band I saw? A toss-up between Level 42 and The Real Thing (yeah I know they started in the 70s!).

Best “ technical problem “ situation at a concert that I’ve seen , was when I saw Black Sabbath and they were having technical problems with the lighting and Ozzie Osbourne’s microphone So after a minute of not knowing what was going on Black Sabbath guitar legend broke into a great rendition of “Wonderful land “ by The Shadows . How surreal was that !

Haha, love it!

Most bizarre one I witnessed was Chuck Berry: he broke a string, and while someone fixed it (he never carried a spare guitar), he recited poetry!

I saw top 80’s English band Squeeze last night doing a warm up concert at Deal before their forthcoming UK tour and they were amazing playing mainly hit after hit after hit for an hour and 40 minutes without a break . You’d be surprised how many songs you’d recognise by them I also couldn’t believe how strong Glenn Tilbrook vocals still are ,Chris Difford vocals are decent too . It was nice to see a band that’s been around the block still having a high standard of musicianship and looked like they were really enjoying playing to an audience again I still can’t quite believe that I saw this great band who have previously played Madison Square Garden ,New York playing at a small community theatre in Deal with a standing capacity of 300 .

Great band! Never seen them live (though I did interview Chris for my 2nd TOTP book).

Update .Talk about having the cherry on the cake , After the excellent Squeeze concert on Wednesday night at Deal, I left some Squeeze Cd sleeves at the theatre for Glen Tilbrook and Chris Difford to sign Squeeze manager arranged for this to happen and I was really pleased to collect them all signed today . Thanks lads for doing that for me .

I’m not really a fan of these new-fangled modern 80s acts, but I’m sure they’ll be fun! I did recently interview Marc (via email) for a book I’m working on, and he was both gracious and helpful.

I thought for moment that you were going to say that Chuck Berry played with his “ Ding a ling “ whilst they sorted his guitar string out . Lol

Marc Almond announces new solo album I’m Not Anyone, single Elusive Butterfly

Marc Almond is back with his latest solo album ‘I’m Not Anyone’, out July 12 on BMG. 

Coinciding with his 45th year in music, the LP features covers spanning genres, from psychedelic and prog rock to folk, gospel and soul. 

On the record, which arrives following his Top 10 comeback with Soft Cell’s ‘*Happiness Not Included’, Marc says: “I always approach curating an album of covers with a lot of joy as it means a year or so of listening to songs, old and new, making lists from which I add or subtract songs and in the process discover, or rediscover, some half-forgotten gems. Living now in Portugal, I´ve found the time to not only reflect on my life but to also rediscover my love for music and songs. A great song can never die and should always find a new life and audience.

“I finally reached a selection of songs that express where I am in my life today and how I feel about the world and my place in it. These aren’t particularly storytelling songs (though for me, lyrics always come first) but more than ever this time I’ve gone for how a song makes me feel and the emotional resonance it holds – reflective songs for an older artist, perhaps.

“I don’t change a song too much, take it too far away from why I like it. Too much emphasis is made on reinvention. I like to think that I’m bringing a song in a new light to my audience who might not have heard it before or haven’t considered it until they’ve heard me sing it. Then they may re-evaluate it.

“There is an underlying spiritual, esoteric feel to this album, a thread that goes through it – deeply elemental references, a nod to my interest in things Druid and Pagan and which reflects how many of us feel in this world which is going through changes, and not all good. 

“I could go through the album song by song but that takes away the joy of how you may hear it, and to me what is important is the overall feel. Sometimes why I choose a song over another is not always even clear to me, it is just a feeling and something of the moment. A choice has to be settled on and the discipline of track limitation means sometimes I just have to go with what I feel on that day when I commit. I always hope the choices are right, but the album is what it finally is, and I live with it.”

Alongside the album announcement, the singer released his interpretation of Bob Lind’s esoteric 1965 folk classic Elusive Butterfly , which has been covered by everyone from Aretha Franklin to Cher and Dolly Parton.

Marc adds, “I can’t simply just sing any song; I have to feel that if I could I would have written it myself… It’s just that someone else said it first, and far better than me.”

He will also tour as special guest of Jools Holland from the end of October through to Christmas, including two London shows at the Royal Albert Hall on November 29 and 30.

Stary Oskol - Overview

Stary Oskol is a city in Russia located in the Belgorod region, standing on the banks of the Oskol River, about 142 km northeast of Belgorod, 632 km south of Moscow.

The population of Stary Oskol is about 222,600 (2022), the area - 134 sq. km.

History of stary oskol.

In 1300, there was a village called Ugly on the the territory of the present city. Today, it is one of the districts of Stary Oskol. At that time, the village was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and was a border crossing point on the border with the Golden Horde.

The settlement of Oskol was founded by Russian Tsar Fyodor Ioanovich’s order (Ivan’s the Terrible son) to protect the southern borders of the Russian kingdom in 1593. The bulk of the population were peasants and the military.

In 1617, the town was burned by the Poles. In 1625, 1642 and 1677, the Crimean Tatars approached Stary Oskol, but could not capture it. The town was renamed Stary Oskol (meaning Old Oskol) in 1655, when the town of Tsaryov-Alexeyev, located down the river, was renamed Novy Oskol (New Oskol). Fortifications of the town existed until the 18th century.

More Historical Facts…

Gradually, Stary Oskol turned into peaceful, commercial and merchant town - the center of an agricultural district. Industrial production was represented mainly by enterprises on processing agricultural products.

In 1780, the town got its coat of arms. In 1784, Stary Oskol like most Russian towns of that time was rebuilt according to a new plan signed by Empress Catherine II. A large number of brick houses were built, mostly two-story buildings. The historic center of Stary Oskol has been preserved to our time.

In the second half of the 19th century, the town had a wide network of schools, libraries, reading rooms, printing, secondary schools. In 1894, construction of the railway began, trade and industry began to develop rapidly.

Until the 1930s, there were eleven Orthodox churches in Stary Oskol. During the Second World War, Stary Oskol was occupied by the Germans from July 2, 1942 to February 5, 1943. In 1954, the city became part of the newly formed Belgorod region.

In the late 1960s - early 1970s, in connection with the active development of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (the most powerful iron ore basin in the world), Stary Oskol became a major center of iron and steel industry.

Stary Oskol was declared a city of three top-priority Komsomol construction projects. The largest enterprises: Lebedinsky Mining and Processing Plant, Stoilensky Mining and Processing Plant, Oskolsky Electrometallurgical Plant became not only the city-forming enterprises, but also the largest industrial enterprises of the country. Stary Oskol experienced a new birth.

Today, Stary Oskol is a rapidly developing city, one of the leading mining and metallurgical centers of Russia.

The coat of arms of Stary Oskol is a shield divided in half diagonally, in the red field there is a rifle, in the green field - a golden plow. It reflects both military and agricultural importance of the town.

Stary Oskol is among Russian cities with the youngest population. The average age of its citizens is about 35 years. The main reason lies in the history of the city. In the second half of the 20th century, a large number of members of the Young Communist League came to Stary Oskol to participate in the construction of large industrial enterprises.

Unique reserves of iron ore, developed industry and infrastructure, high scientific, technical and industrial potential, fertile land form the basis of Stary Oskol economy.

The main branches of local industry are mining, ferrous metallurgy, machine building and metalworking, building materials, food industry. There are more than 140 large and medium industrial enterprises, which employ more than 80 thousand people.

Attractions of Stary Oskol

The city has more than a dozen Orthodox churches and chapels. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Tokareva Street, 4/1) is the main church of Stary Oskol. St. Trinity Church (Bolshevistskaya Street, 17/15), built in 1730, is the oldest church in the city.

The Zoo was opened in Stary Oskol in 2008. Bears, lions, tigers, monkeys, wolves, camels, ostriches, and other species of birds and animals live there.

Museum of Local Lore (Lenina Street, 50). The museums, founded in 1923, has exhibitions about the history of Stary Oskol. It is located in a building which is a monument of history and culture of the 19th century once owned by the merchants and brothers Likhutins.

The museum organizes tours of the city and the area including visits to an ancient Russian settlement of Kholki, an underground monastery in Melovy mountains, and a biosphere reserve “Yamskaya steppe”.

Art Museum (Lenina Street, 57). The collection of local masters of folk clay toys (O.M.Goncharova and N.M.Goncharova) is a real pearl of the museum. Stary Oskol folk clay toys production was known from the end of the 18th century.

House Museum of Vasily Yeroshenko (Yeroshenko Street, 15). Yeroshenko’s life is a living legend for blind people not only in Russia but also abroad. He encourages disabled people, supports them with his talent, helps them on their ways to improve techniques. Yeroshenko spoke 12 foreign languages and was the professor of universities in Tokyo and Beijing, he became a classic of Japan literature for children.
