A new year’s to remember, december 2022, an amazing and unique experience.

Our tour was great! Went for our honeymoon and it was everything we wanted. First night we got to see the northern lights which were fantastic! Second day, most certainly our longest, visited several sites (Geysire & Þingvellir) and went snowmobiling on a glacier. Such an amazing and unique experience. The walking tour around Reykjavik was surprisingly educational and our guide pointed out things that we ordinarily would have missed. The NYE dinner was delicious and going out to see the firework displays by (what seemed to be like) everyone was something. Practically had to dodge fireworks! Our 4th day was spent at the Blue Lagoon; perfect after a night of partying! Our last day was nice and relaxing, did some final shopping before we headed off to the airport. Hope to go back & visit Iceland again!

Iceland is a little island country located wayyy up north near the Artic Circle. Situated in the Atlantic Ocean close to Greenland, funnily enough the two islands could easily exchange names since it's Iceland that actually remains green for most of the year.

With a thousand years of mixed Gaelic and Norse influences, the country's relative isolation has made Icelanders community-oriented and you'll witness many unique and long-standing cultural traditions when you visit.

These traditions include the continuous use of Icelandic – one of the oldest languages in the world - which remains mostly unchanged as recorded in the cherished Viking sagas dating back to the Middle Ages.

Home to about 320,000 people, most Icelanders live in and around the capital Reykjavik . A cosmopolitan and friendly city, Reykjavik is known for the colourful roofs of its houses and more notably for being the most northern capital city in the world.

Outside the capital you'll find a sparsely populated countryside that's rich in beautiful landscapes of flowing lava fields , rugged mountains, highlands and glaciers.

Due to the country's location near the Arctic Circle, many travellers are compelled to undertake Iceland holidays during the Northern hemisphere winter season. From November to February is when snow often blankets the ground and the famous  Northern Lights  appear in the sky.

The awe-inspiring display, known by its scientific name as  Aurora Borealis , most often appears in green hues and on rare occasions pink and blue.

Other fascinating activities include  volcano treks , elf spotting (elves are taken very seriously in Iceland and are no laughing matter), whale watching and many forms of adventure sports including skiing, sea kayaking and - scuba diving?! Yes, brave the cold because Silfra is a world-renowned dive spot!

If all this talk of 'ice' and 'north' is making you shiver then rest assured because Mother Nature has blessed Iceland with the famous  Blue Lagoon . Iceland's iconic geothermal spa, Blue Lagoon's water temperature remains a constant 40 degrees Celsius all year round. 

With countless pools and saunas, swimming is a very popular pastime right throughout Iceland. The country even lays claim to a geothermal beach,  Nautholsvik . A well-kept local secret, Nautholsvik is where you can swim in cold sea that's fused with hot geothermal water. 

An Iceland tour isn't complete without also visiting one of country's many waterfalls . Glymur is the highest, Gullfoss is the easiest to reach from the capital, but Seljalandsfoss is the most majestic.

Golden Circle:

This driving route encompasses many of Iceland's most renowned natural wonders, including Thingvellir National Park, the nation’s most historic area. Icelanders gathered here in A.D. 930 and established one of the world’s first parliaments. Also this is one of the globe’s most geologically significant landscapes. It marks the point where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall:

This beautiful cascade is one of Iceland’s most famous and picturesque waterfalls. It is an impressive sight where water falls from a sheer cliff plunging 210 feet below. What makes it even more unique is that you can see it from all sides. That’s right - have your raincoat ready as you venture behind the falls and travel along a picture- perfect walkway. You’ll not only see but also feel the power of this natural treasure.

Vatnajökull National Park:

This is home to the magnificent Vatnajokull Glacier, the largest in Iceland and in fact, the largest glacier mass in all of Europe. Underneath this huge ice cap that covers 8% of the island lies several active volcanoes. It is a fascinating place where the powerful interchange of volcanoes and glaciers or fire and ice are continually at odds.

Aurora Borealis:

Each year, during the winter months, the magical but elusive northern lights (aurora borealis) appear. This natural phenomenon is the product of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere; the results are spectacular! Streaks of colorful light appear across the sky. This light show is truly dazzling and worth the pursuit.

Blue Lagoon:

On the Reykjanes Peninsula, known for its rugged landscape, lava fields, and hot springs, sits the famous Blue Lagoon. Formed during the operation of a nearby geothermal power plant, it is a place where science harmonizes with nature. The waters are renowned for their healing properties. Visitors dip in the pleasantly warm, mineral-rich waters located in the middle of a dramatic lava field in the hopes of leaving with a youthful glow.

Skogar Folk Museum:

The museum’s founder Thordur Tomasson started this museum with his personal collection of artifacts back in 1949. It has grown tremendously under his direction. Today you will find an extensive collection of tools, handicrafts, books, manuscripts, and documents. And on the grounds there is a substantial open-air museum with many traditional Icelandic buildings including a chapel and schoolhouse.

Cruise Jökulsárlón Lagoon:

This glacial lagoon is famous for its countless icebergs. The lagoon is fed from the melting waters of the massive Vatnajökull glacier. It is an incredible experience to board a small boat and venture out in the tranquil waters to get up close to these mighty chunks of ice while surrounded by immense beauty. On your adventure, you may even get the opportunity to taste the 1,000 year old glacial ice.

This Icelandic delicacy made from shark meat offers a unique window into Icelandic culture. For over 400 years, the people of Iceland have hunted the Greenland shark. The locals cure and hang the meat to dry for 4 to 5 months producing this delicacy known as “hakare.” Take the opportunity to learn the process and give it a try! It is sure to be like nothing you have ever tried before. Eating it is considered a sign of hardiness among the locals.

Expert Advice

No fancy clothes required. Dress casual, comfortable and most importantly, in layers. The weather can change at any moment. Wind and rain are common, so I suggest packing waterproof clothes and shoes, and bringing a hooded windbreaker and an umbrella.

You may find yourself wondering, is that an abandoned baby carriage, with a baby inside!? Relax, no worries, the parents are just inside dining. Yes that is right, it is Icelandic culture to leave the baby outside a café or restaurant. No need to alert the authorities, the baby is safe, and it is a common practice.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What causes the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with elements in our atmosphere (such as nitrogen and oxygen), creating brightly coloured dancing displays of light.

Am I guaranteed to see the Northern Lights?

While Northern Light displays can never be guaranteed, as they are a natural phenomenon, our local leaders do their best to ensure you get to see nature’s greatest spectacle.

Can the Northern Lights be predicted?

Yes, the Northern Lights can be predicted to some extent.

The activity level of the Northern Lights depends on many things (of which some are predictable and some are somewhat random), including sunspots, coronal holes, solar flares and geomagnetic activity.

If you’re not an astronomer, your best bet is to check the local Aurora forecast – a KP-index number of 3 or higher means you have a good chance of seeing the Lights.

Can I see the Northern Lights with the naked eye?

Yes, you can see the Northern Lights with the naked eye. Humans can most easily see the green and white of the lights at night. A camera, however, does not have the same limitations as the human eye, so the colours may appear brighter and more brilliant in photos.

Can I photograph the Northern Lights?

Of course! There is no magic recipe for capturing the Northern Lights. Still, you’ll want to set your camera on a tripod and ensure it has a manual mode functionality, so you can adjust the aperture and shutter speed to capture the spectacular display best.
