Letter: Why highlight only meat-serving restaurants in an “Earth Day” story?

Salt lake city is home to many other wonderful all-vegan establishments..

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Lil Lotus, a vegan/vegetarian restaurant in Sugar House, Salt Lake City is shown on Tuesday Dec. 11, 2018.

Animal agriculture is an environmental disaster. The Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that 14.5% of all harmful greenhouse gas emissions is due to raising animals for food — a greater share than the amount contributed by all of our personal automobiles put together. The Great Salt Lake is disappearing because water is being diverted to grow alfalfa , a thirsty crop being grown in the desert. Alfalfa is produced only for animal feed.

Wild spaces throughout the U.S. and beyond are depopulated of indigenous species, especially predators, to transform the landscape to accommodate grazing livestock. Large-scale deforestation, particularly in regions like the Amazon rainforest, is similarly driven by the expansion of pastureland and cultivation of feed crops like soybeans for livestock.

Animal agriculture also threatens the globe with another deadly pandemic, due to the misuse of antibiotics as a growth promoter and the extreme overcrowding that exists on modern cruel factory farms.

Given this, I was surprised and disappointed to see that The Salt Lake Tribune highlighted only meat-serving restaurants in its recent “Earth Day” restaurant feature . Salt Lake City is home to many other wonderful all-vegan establishments, owned and managed by people who are trying to feed our community the best food while causing the least harm. This includes two restaurants I own and manage, Buds and Monkeywrench, which are proudly and forever vegan due to our ethical commitment to both the planet and the animals. I hope The Tribune will consider a follow-up piece that highlights some of our amazing vegan establishments in Salt Lake City.

This could also provide readers with important information about how animal agriculture causes profound harm and practical tips on how we can all help be part of the solution by choosing to eat vegan.

More than 5,000 sign letter urging rejection of Tennessee's bill to arm teachers

jaunt 5 letters

A letter urging Tennessee legislators not to pass a bill that would allow public K-12 school teachers and staff to carry concealed handguns on campus had garnered more than 5,300 signatures as of Monday afternoon.

Parents of students at The Covenant School in Nashville, where a shooter killed three children and three staff members last spring, were behind the letter and the push for signatures. As of 1 p.m. Monday, the signature count came to 5,366 and included parents, grandparents, teachers, medical professionals, community members and others from all over Tennessee.

Organizers behind the letter said they were "devastated" to see the measure, SB1325/HB1202 , pass the Senate amid vocal protests earlier this month. It could go before the full House for a vote this week as legislators wind down their regular session.

"While we all want safe schools and an end to gun violence, arming teachers with guns is not the way," part of the letter read. "It ignores research that shows the presence of a gun increases the risks posed to children."

Sarah Shoop Neumann, whose child attends Covenant, handed the signed letter to an aide for Rep. Justin Pearson, D-Memphis, at the Tennessee Capitol on Monday.

Teachers and staff who wish to carry a firearm must undergo annual training, pass an FBI background check and complete a psychiatric evaluation. The district director, school principal and leader of the local law enforcement agency must also sign off on each application. Proponents of the bill say it closes gaps in schools with no school resource officer or in communities with limited police presence or long response times.

The letter criticizes gaps in the training and says the burden of wielding a gun and potentially confronting an assailant is not something teachers and school staff should bear. It also said the measure ignores FBI and National Association of School Resource Officers recommendations for training and best practices when it comes to armed staff in schools.

"Anyone who hasn’t received extensive training, such as that provided to law enforcement officers, will likely be mentally unprepared to take a life, especially the life of a student assailant," part of the letter read.

The letter also argues that armed teachers and staff could lead to complications and confusion when it comes to police response, and that handguns are no match for assailants armed with assault-style rifles.

"We must ensure every student, at every school, has proper security to ensure they are truly safe when their parents drop them off each morning, not improper security measures that could place students and staff at risk for harm," the letter read. "Ultimately, we need preventative measures against gun violence so no other community in our state experiences the tragedy that took place at The Covenant School did on March 27th, 2023."

The full letter, which is still open for signatures, can be found here .

New records reveal FirstEnergy paid $2.5 million to organization backing Gov. Mike DeWine: Capitol Letter

FirstEnergy (secret) backing: New records show FirstEnergy paid $2.5 million to a dark money nonprofit that backed Gov. Mike DeWine’s 2018 election, Jake Zuckerman reports . This makes for a total of $4.3 million in contributions to a spread of opaque nonprofits backing DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted’s candidacy.

‘The Huffman C4:’ The same records also show a nonprofit controlled and funded by FirstEnergy gave $300,000 to what FirstEnergy lobbyist Ty Pine referred to as “the Huffman C4.” As Jake Zuckerman reports , Senate President Matt Huffman said he never “created, controlled, or coordinated” with the group. Two FirstEnergy lobbyists and a third player wrapped up in the scandal, however, have made several references in texts and emails to a 501(c)(4) nonprofit they associate with Huffman.

Rocky finances: A state audit concluded that Lakeland Community College, which serves Lake County east of Cleveland, has been spending money too freely considering its lost 46% of it student enrollment between 2012 and 2022. Auditors recommended the college reconsider how it’s using buildings and labs, sell off property not directly on campus, and renegotiate its collective bargaining agreement with faculty, among other measures, Laura Hancock reports .

Emergency request: Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is asking the Ohio Supreme Court for an emergency order to narrow a lower court’s 14-day block on the state from enforcing the law that bans youth from receiving gender-affirming health care. Yost argues that the order is too broad because it applies to millions of people who don’t live in the lower court’s jurisdiction, Franklin County, and the block would also prohibit the ban on girls and women from playing female interscholastic sports, Hancock reports .

Raid questions: Saying that a fatal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives raid in Little Rock, Arkansas, “raises serious questions about the weaponization of the agency against Americans,” House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan is asking ATF Director Steve Dettelbach for “documents and information” on the case, Sabrina Eaton writes . On Monday, the Champaign County Republican sent Dettelbach a letter that says the deadly pre-dawn raid while executing a search warrant at the home of airport executive Bryan Malinowski may have violated Justice Department policies on “no knock” entries and use of body cameras.

Social insecurity: The Social Security Administration’s office in Warrensville Heights has cut back its services due to high staff attrition and will shut down for 90 days beginning in May, with its future reopening in question, Eaton reports . Two Democrats, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown of Cleveland and U.S. Rep. Shontel Brown of Warrensville Heights, would like to see it reopened as soon as possible.

Rolling out: After eight years of work, the Ohio Turnpike’s new tolling system has gone live. Jeremy Pelzer takes a look at the changes, which include open-road tolling for E-ZPass users and a new way of calculating tolls for all drivers along the 241-mile-long highway.

What we’re watching this week

1. Gov. Mike DeWine has two public appearances Wednesday. We have questions about new records showing FirstEnergy paid seven-figure sums to nonprofits backing DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted.

2. For that matter, we also have questions for Senate President Matt Huffman about a six-figure contribution to what FirstEnergy’s lobbyist called ‘the Huffman C4′

3. Ohio House and Senate floor sessions are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

4. The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote Tuesday afternoon on long-sought legislation to close a loophole in state law shielding spouses who rape their partners

5. The Senate General Government Committee is scheduled to vote Wednesday on legislation to prohibit ranked choice voting in the state.

On the Move

U.S. Rep. Max Miller, a Rocky River Republican, will host a town hall with constituents at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Solon Center for the Arts, 6315 SOM Center Road in Solon. People who want to attend should RSVP using this link.

‘Mike Johnson Did the Right Thing’ on Ukraine Aid

More from our inbox:, a juror’s duty, talking about guns, poverty’s toll on health, understanding anxious parents and kids.

House Speaker Mike Johnson surrounded by members of the news media in the Capitol.

To the Editor:

Re “ $95 Billion Bill for Three Allies Passes in House ” (front page, April 21):

Speaker Mike Johnson did the right thing! He acted as a statesman, putting country over party, and acknowledging that this act of bipartisan leadership could cost him his job.

We have waited a long time to see Republican leaders place the welfare of our nation and the world above their personal desires for power, and while I will disagree with Mr. Johnson on the majority of his stands, he has brought hope and help to Ukraine at a time when they are most desperately needed.

Perhaps we can make bipartisanship something to be applauded and not punished.

Susan Shelton Falmouth, Mass.

As an independent, I vowed never again to vote for a Republican after the chaos of the past few years in Congress and the spinelessness of the Republican Party in following the lead of a misguided former president. Then came a surprise from Mike Johnson that has restored my faith in my fellow citizens.

After months of wishy-washing, he stood up for what was right and just, putting aside self-interest and addressing the needs of our allies and our nation. I am so proud of him! And though I will think twice before voting for most Republicans in the future, I would support Mike Johnson for whatever office he chooses to pursue.

Mason G. Senft Greenvale, N.Y.

Speaker Mike Johnson has bucked Donald Trump and his band of sour MAGA obstructionists to do something for the security of the people of Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Emboldened with the righteous power of doing the right thing, Mr. Johnson should revive the bipartisan border bill worked out in the Senate earlier this year but effectively killed by Mr. Trump, a compromise that goes a long way toward securing the safety and security of Americans and migrants.

After all, Mr. Johnson works for all Americans, not Mr. Trump, nor the “chaos caucus,” the Trumplicans in the House who are trying to stymie the speaker and could easily be sent back home come November.

Mr. Johnson should take the steps necessary to secure America’s border and enact the changes that the vast majority of Americans want. He works for us, not Mr. Trump!

John E. Colbert Arroyo Seco, N.M.

Re “ Jurors Do Their Jobs, Even in New York ,” by Jesse Wegman (The Point blog, Opinion, nytimes.com, April 19):

I believe that Donald Trump was one of the worst presidents in history, together with Pierce, Buchanan and Harding (and perhaps Nixon). I believe that he is a pathological liar and a cheat.

And yet, were I to be called to the jury at his current trial, I know I would be able to treat him like any other defendant, presumed innocent until or unless the prosecution produces sufficient evidence.

I am a retired attorney, and I know that the basis for Anglo-American justice depends on the jury to judge not on the character of the defendant but on the guilt or lack thereof produced.

As it happens I live in a different borough of New York, and so I could not be called in the trial in Manhattan, which cynics would say makes it so much easier to profess virtue. And yet I do believe this of myself.

Steven Chinn Bronx

Re “ Abortion Is Remaking Our Political Landscape. Why Aren’t Guns? ,” by Gail Collins (column, April 18):

Ms. Collins (as usual) asks a good question: “Why don’t we talk more about guns?”

I want to talk about guns: They should be banned, except for the military and law enforcement. The Second Amendment should be repealed. I feel confident that someday our citizens will collectively say, “What were we thinking?” The amount of gun violence in our country is outrageous.

I am quite familiar with the other side: The bad guys will be the only ones with guns. It’s a tradition. I get it. I have hunted myself. So what? There were many odious aspects of the U.S. Constitution that were repealed.

Australia and New Zealand cracked down on guns , and gun deaths decreased dramatically. I am familiar with the argument that these are “different” cultures and “different” countries, but they are not that different; they are not from Mars.

It is way beyond time to repeal the Second Amendment. Let’s do it.

Marc Chafetz Washington

I applaud Dr. Lindsay Ryan for “ Poverty and Inequality Prove Deadly for Many ” (Opinion guest essay, April 14).

I worked for many years in urban outpatient clinics and hospitals that cared for indigent populations. Sadly, many patients sought care when it was too late and what could have been cured became fatal.

Being able to afford a doctor’s visit and having a prescription filled is not a luxury but a basic need. Preventive care may allow patients to avoid becoming seriously ill.

The need for socialized medicine should not be a political issue but a human one for all to embrace.

Cora Berke Lambertville, N.J.

I read “ Anxious Parents Are the Ones Who Need Help ,” by Mathilde Ross (Opinion guest essay, April 11), with great dismay.

As a clinical social work psychotherapist, I find it hard to believe that many parents are calling mental health counselors at colleges and universities on a whim.

My experience is that parents are often very savvy about mental health issues and need to be respected; they know their young adults better than anyone.

When a counselor receives a panicked call from a parent, we don’t know if there is a history of suicide or mental illness in the family. We are also unaware of any current crises, such as death, illness or divorce.

We need to be especially careful during these times of war, climate change and political disharmony not to dismiss anyone’s anxiety without very careful and thoughtful analysis.

Yes, I am aware of parents who tend to be worriers and harbor unnecessary anxiety about their children, but I would much rather err on the side of caution than dismiss that parent’s concerns as merely their child’s “normal” adjustment to college.

Isn’t it our job to be of service to a worried parent to explore and respect their concerns and try to help diminish their anxiety and thus truly be of help to their children?

Adrienne Resnick New Rochelle, N.Y.

I appreciated Mathilde Ross’s essay, but its tone seemed too dismissive of parents’ genuine concerns.

When my daughter was a college freshman in 2012, I ignored my maternal intuition because I was told not to worry. Unfortunately, she tried to soothe her anxiety with drugs and became addicted to heroin.

Families absolutely need to be educated about the normal ups and downs of adjusting to college. But if they are too quickly labeled overly anxious, they may feel ashamed to speak up when real problems arise.

Ann Batchelder Asheville, N.C. The writer is the author of the memoir “Craving Spring: A Mother’s Quest, a Daughter’s Depression and the Greek Myth That Brought Them Together.”

Opinion Criminalizing camping won’t end homelessness. Here’s what will.

Regarding the April 20 editorial, “ There is no constitutional right to public camping ,” and George F. Will’s April 21 op-ed, “ Homelessness camps out at the high court ”:

The Post’s editorial and Mr. Will’s column on the Supreme Court’s Grants Pass v. Johnson gave readers a misleading impression of a number of crucial aspects of the case.

For instance, the editorial argues that “Without a credible threat of sanctions against public camping, officials have little leverage to induce people to take shelter beds when they are available.” But, in addition to being untrue, such a statement has nothing to do with the Grants Pass case. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit held that criminalizing camping is unconstitutional when there is not alternative shelter available. The homeless plaintiffs in the case do not challenge the punishment of homeless people who decline accessible shelter options, nor reasonable time and place restrictions on sleeping outside.

The suggestion the 9th Circuit held that “shelters operated by church groups may not count as available space because a faith-based milieu can create a possible unconstitutional establishment of religion” likewise mischaracterizes some relevant facts. In reality, the 9th Circuit held that people could not be arrested for refusing to go to the Grants Pass Gospel Rescue Mission, not because that shelter is a religious one, but because it “required residents to work at the mission six hours a day, six days a week” (without pay). People with disabilities that prevented them from working were banned from the shelter . And residents had to “attend an approved place of worship each Sunday and that place of worship had to espouse ‘traditional Christian teachings such as the Apostles Creed.’”

Finally, the editorial ignores the extensive Eighth Amendment jurisprudence on disproportionate punishment, which prohibits this sort of draconian sanction for wholly innocent, unavoidable human conduct such as sleep. Nothing in the 9th Circuit’s decision prevents cities from addressing homelessness in sensible, proven, humane ways. The decision prohibits only the senseless, costly and counterproductive criminalization of unavoidable human behavior.

Clare Pastore , Los Angeles

As a physician who worked in California providing services to homeless individuals, I can tell you that no one wants to be living on a sidewalk or in a park. But the insane cost of living and lack of any reasonable plan by cities or the states in the West to build more affordable housing makes it virtually impossible for people experiencing homelessness to find a place to live.

As the University of California at San Francisco’s Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative’s major 2023 study of people experiencing homelessness in the state found, 90 percent of them were housed in California before they became homeless there, and 75 percent had housing in the same county where they are now homeless. People aren’t moving to the West Coast because they think it will be nice to live on the street in those states or because the weather is nice. If this theory had any weight to it, the southeastern United States would also “attract” homeless people. But we aren’t having the same conversation about Florida or Georgia.

Furthermore, large cities in the northeast do not have a street homelessness problem of a similar magnitude to what is happening in West Coast states due to laws such as New York’s “ right to shelter .” The city must provide enough shelter space to meet the needs of the number of homeless people on any given day. San Francisco, by contrast, has fewer shelter beds than unhoused residents , leaving many with no other option than sleeping outside, whether in cars or public spaces.

The obvious answer is to build more shelters and supportive housing. But societal hypocrisy is killing our neighbors. No one is willing to do the right thing because it might be uncomfortable or require them to live near “poor people”.

I’ll also point out that from a purely financial standpoint, criminalizing homelessness makes zero sense. People who have no funds to pay for housing quite clearly lack the funds to pay fines related to trespassing and therefore will both not pay them and ultimately end up serving jail time. The cost of supporting and housing an inmate in a county jail far exceeds the cost of a shelter or the building of long-term affordable housing.

Joe Mega , Pinetop, Ariz.

As the Supreme Court considers Grants Pass v. Johnson, policymakers who deal with homelessness should consider two key questions: Are people who are living outside doing so voluntarily or involuntarily? And is shelter available to them?

As part of a 2023 study evaluating Oregon’s drug possession decriminalization Measure 110, we conducted a study of 468 people who use drugs in eight Oregon counties, including Josephine County, where Grants Pass is located.

In our study, 92 percent of people had slept outdoors, in a vehicle or a tent in the past year and 85 percent reported they were homeless or unstably housed. Among people who reported they were homeless, 93 percent said they wanted to obtain housing. (That figure was 87 percent in Josephine County.) These findings show that people in Oregon are living outside involuntarily.

We also studied whether shelter was available. Among the people who wanted housing, 71 percent sought housing in the past year. Yet, of those, only 25 percent — and no one in Josephine County — were successful in obtaining housing. For those on wait lists, the average length of time until housing opened up was 17 months. These data show that housing is unavailable for most who seek it.

Until these facts change, people will continue to live outside.

Esther Chung , Emeryville, Calif.

Alex Kral , San Francisco

The writers are researchers at RTI International.

In George F. Will’s April 21 op-ed, he contends that homelessness is a potentially dangerous social ill that is “the outcome of multiple choices” made by “unemployable casualties of mental illness (schizophrenias, depression, bipolar disorder, etc.) and drug abuse.” Given that, it’s a shame that instead of addressing the moral obligation that society has to care for its most vulnerable members, Mr. Will spent most of his column on the legal logic and implications of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit decision instead.

Current data shows that 4.2 million youths and young adults experience homelessness in a given year. Of them, 700,000 do not have families or guardians with them. Some have been forced from their homes for reasons outside their control. Many more are young adults who have aged out of foster care without the knowledge, skills, abilities and support systems to be successful. Homeless minors and young adults might struggle with mental illness related to trauma they experienced in childhood through no fault of their own. Among homeless youth, 40 percent do not have shelter.

We bear collective responsibility for the multiple systemic failures that ultimately lead to youth homelessness. These young people require solutions that address the root causes of youth homelessness. The solution is not, as Mr. Will and others who support the overturning of the 9th Circuit’s decision suggest, to institutionalize homeless youth against their will, to jail them or to push them out of town.

Hallie Jackson , Fairfax

I am a clinical social worker who for more than 30 years has served adults who are unhoused and have diagnoses of mental illness and, sometimes, co-occurring disorders. Many of them are unsheltered. The Post’s Editorial Board and George F. Will neglected to comprehensively consider this issue.

I have never had an unhoused person decline a home. A shelter bed is not a home. And many shelters are dirty, crowded, unsafe and fraught with theft.

The cost of a one-bedroom apartment in my small, rural community is $1,000 per month. Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a low-income disability program under the Social Security Administration, pays at most $943 each month for individuals and $1,415 for couples. Not only does this amount keep recipients under the federal poverty level, but it clearly doesn’t pay for housing, much less other necessities. In large cities, the costs are even greater.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development budget was slashed during the Reagan administration and has not increased commensurate with the need or the housing costs. Mental health treatment resources also are not funded to meet the need, nor are an array of substance use treatment resources.

Part of the problem is the siloed budgeting that happens at all government levels. Instead of focusing on the problem of encampments, how about addressing housing costs, access to treatment and other services and the level of SSI payments? This seems another instance of blaming the victim. We can do better.

Yvonne M. Perret , Cumberland, Md.
