Kevin James: Irregardless Review – An old man complaining about hating the world

Kevin James: Irregardless Review

For the first time in over five years, Kevin James is returning to the stage to make us laugh in the Prime Video comedy special  Kevin James: Irregardless . Most know James as an actor, but he broke into the comedy scene and was discovered at the Montreal Comedy Festival in 1996. Of course, this catapulted his career to his hit show  King of Queens  and movies like  Here Comes the Boom, Paul Blart: Mall Cop,  and  Grown Ups.  James is heading out on his “Owls Don’t Walk” comedy tour supporting the new special.

Irregardless sees James telling jokes about parenting, kids playing video games, and how he doesn’t trust technology.

James hits the stage to the Highly Suspect’s song, “Natural Born Killer,” and delivers some hilarious dad-like dance moves to ramp the audience up. James’s opening bit is about fear and how everything in society is built to make everyone live in fear, whether it’s telling you that you have “pre-diabetes” or how food companies package things.

James tries to compare the modern-day fear to the real fear of people who were flag holders in the wars back in the day, and this was met with not a single laugh. He kept going, which finally got a few chuckles, but my goodness, was this a terrible bit. It was so unfunny, and his delivery here was so weird, and it didn’t land with the audience or me.

James’ entire special is what I would imagine an old-school dad complains to his family about over Thanksgiving every year. The famous hits are about not trusting technology, kids not being disciplined, and how the world is scared of dumb things. It was a grumpy old man yelling about how much he hates the world now. His final joke about not listening to his wife’s stories was the icing on the cake.

A few laughs are sprinkled into the special, but the true highlight is James’s body language and stage presence. You can tell he is an actor because he moves around on the stage a lot to deliver his jokes, which I enjoy. His facial expressions are priceless. It’s too bad the jokes failed to deliver because it would’ve made for the perfect combination.

Do you want to hear an old man mad about how kids these days have it easy? Then Kevin James: Irregardless is the perfect stand-up special for you. Otherwise, this is an easy skip for me because many of his jokes don’t land, and they come off as more annoying than funny. This is easily one of the worst stand-up comedy specials I’ve seen in recent times.

Steve Buscemi Says ‘Grown Ups’ Cast Ditched Him In The Rain While He Wore A Full-Body Cast: “I Thought We Were Friends”

‘the king of queens’ cast, ben stiller remember the late jerry stiller in touching anniversary special: “he was an angel”, 11 best family halloween movies on netflix, growing up with the ‘grown ups’ movies: a deep dive into the nostalgia of adam sandler’s comedies.

Kevin James is the latest dad jokester to make the leap from Netflix to Amazon Prime Video , following the examples of both Nate Bargatze and Jim Gaffigan last year. What happens when the King of Queens star finds out he’s not the ruler of his real-life household? Your enjoyment might depend upon your generational perspective.

KEVIN JAMES: IRREGARDLESS : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: In the six years since his previous special for Netflix, Kevin James: Never Don’t Give Up , James has not given up on the idea of also being a movie star. He tried playing a would-be killer novelist in Netflix’s True Memoirs of an International Assassin , a Neo-Nazi prison escapee in Becky , the real-life football coach Sean Payton in 2022’s Home Team , and he co-starred alongside Adam Sandler in both Sandy Wexler and Hubie Halloween .

But his comedy fans still see James as an amiably bumbling fool, whether it’s on the big screen in the Paul Blart films or on the stand-up stage, where he opens this hour by dancing to the sounds of the song, “Natural Born Killer.” His jokes here cover the familiar sitcom-worthy territory of marriage and fatherhood. Can James find a way to win? Or even just to catch a break?

What Comedy Specials Will It Remind You Of?:  Although they’ve always had their own personal comedic styles and points of view, it’s still all too easy to watch James and compare his arc with that of his former running buddy in the CBS primetime lineup, Ray Romano .

Memorable Jokes: James bounds onstage with a flourish dancing to the sounds of Highly Suspect’s “Natural Born Killer.” But at 58, he quickly uses his opening dance number as fodder to explore his difficulty with aging. “That was my gift for you” immediately gives way to “I gave you a little too much,” he says, “because everything hurts.” Which leads to a chunk of jokes about going to the doctor’s office, only to leave with more questions than he had upon arrival.

But at least we’re not in an old-timey war, right? James still feels limber enough to act out how he would’ve reacted in the American Revolution or the Civil War had he been handed the flag or drums on the battlefield to cheerlead instead of a musket to survive.

The focus, though, is on his own family in the here and now. James compares his three kids to a “slug farm” and elaborates what happened when he tried to get his son to quit playing video games, only to buy him an Oculus VR headset as a compromise, and then only to discover and demonstrate how that plan backfired. Even in virtual reality, he cannot seem to get his kids to dream big enough.

Of course, James also reminds us that he’s never going to be the smartest guy in the room, unless he can somehow steer the conversation to former heavyweight boxer Buster Douglas. Any other topic? “Don’t be fooled: I am dead behind the eyes.” Which is perhaps an excuse he should be using to avoid small talk; instead, he winds up offering up words such as the titular: “Irregardless.”

Our Take: Irregardless of anything I write here, James retains a lot of goodwill from his TV and film career, and that goes a long way to enjoying his stand-up. In turn, much of his material feels built in a writers room to supply future sitcom episodes as we can imagine how it’d go when James (or his character) has to visit the doctor’s office, or deal with his kids, or continually lose arguments with his wife.

I’d honestly feel better recommending this hour if there weren’t multiple moments that felt outdated either by current events or by plenty of other aging comedians already beating the bit into the ground.

When James digs into the idea that we all could be diagnosed pre-diabetic, there’s something there to be mined. But when he leaps to the conclusion of everything being pre-fear, and in his own nod to FDR, claiming “We have nothing to be afraid of. We really don’t…We live in the safest times in all of human history,” I must respectfully disagree by pointing to very real situations both domestic and foreign that remind us every day right now just how dangerous things are, with even more ominous threats on the horizon.

And when he feels nostalgic for a time when parents could threaten their own kids with a belt (“the belt worked!” he says), it’s a moment where even I, only a handful of years younger than James, want to go “OK, Boomer” (for the generational record, James at 58 is just past the cusp of Boomers at the start of Gen X). James finds a nice nostalgic moment and life lesson in recalling a moment on the pitcher’s mound in Little League where his father’s advice “just throw” is perfect, even if it leads to unintended consequences. I just wish James hadn’t first felt obliged to give us the same tired premise of kids these days with their participation trophies.

Our Call: Like I noted earlier, James hasn’t used up all of his goodwill just yet. So if you’re already a fan of his, then you’ll love this and STREAM IT irregardless. And yet, this also isn’t an hour that’s designed to grow his audience and find new fans. Just the smaller circle of fans who’d be eager to jump onstage with him and take selfies, as we see at the end of this special.

Sean L. McCarthy works the comedy beat. He also podcasts half-hour episodes with comedians revealing origin stories:  The Comic’s Comic Presents Last Things First .

He was delightful awesome, funny, true genus!!! Had me on stitches....love him loved the show.he is a must see!!!! Hienz hall its a beautiful place. Pittsburgh has a lot of beautiful building.great eats. Fun times downtown pgh. Great place to eat work live.

FUNNIEST SHOW WE'VE SEE IN ST GEORGE THEATER EVER!!

His brother was funny to start out but when Kevin James came on the place hit the roof!!! Some of his ad lib jokes were the best we've ever seen in stand up !! making fun of the guy who yelled and disappeared in to smoke was his best bit.. Totally not supposed to happen that way but he made it hysterical..my wife was in tears during his lactose intolerant bit...couldn't stop laughing.. we both had a great time and love seeing him the whole night...great show!!!!

EXTREMELY FUNNY AND ENTERTAINING.

Never missed a beat. Continual flow and much laughter not dirty, which I like and thought I'd get...very honest and open and talked about things you can relate too. Went for a laugh tonight and I got hysterics on certain moments... pleasure.

TAFT THEATER

Saw him for the first time here in Cincinnati, Ohio. Very funny guy, even the jokes I didn’t catch because i was too busy laughing at the last one were funny because of his facial expressions and body movements. He didn’t mention anything about politics, race, his personal achievements and he probably only said two curse words throughout the entire show. It was memorable and I really enjoyed it.

I AM TOTALLY IMPRESSED

I really enjoyed Kevin James stand up comedy "Irregardless". He showed his raw talent by keeping it clean. I hope that he sees this review. I loved it Kevin, If you can do it again I will be there. It was outside of the norm, I give you my sincere accolades. Thank you Kevin James.

KIND OF DISAPPOINTED

Have to say I have been a Big fan for years and was looking forward to this show after it being postponed several times because of Covid. So was kind of offended which I am Not easily prone to when he did a skit on being on. Can’t abs life support. Especially since I lost and had to watch my 4 year old granddaughter go through this as well as being an EMT during the pandemic. Felt it was inappropriate and in poor taste. The rest of the show was good.

kevin james irregardless tour reviews

What better way to warm up for opening night of the Saginaw Spirit at the Dow Event Center, than with comedian Kevin James at the Temple Theatre. The 5 p.m. show saw a fairly packed house of fans who know James from his stints as Doug Heffernan in King of Queens , and Kevin Gable in Kevin Can Wait . In fact, a few times during the show attention seeking fans yelled “We love you, Doug!” from the back of the house.

Before Kevin took the stage, though, his Kevin Can Wait compadre, Chris Roach entertained as the warm up act. As much a professional comedian as James, in the 20 minutes he was on stage garnered as many laughs as James did in his full hour. With similar styles, Roach and James drew their routines from their life experiences living in New York, and through lenses that keep them from taking life too seriously.

While they both poked fun at themselves, James had more time to fill. With an hourlong show, James spent the first 30 minutes on a story that encompassed his eating disorder and the love affair he has with food; namely a trip to Wendy’s that came across more like he was cheating on his wife with a lover.

While he wound his way through the tale, from the lies he told his wife and the person at the drive through window, he took pains to keep the story clean. There were a few times during his monologue where it appeared he caught the f-word as it was about to fly, pulling it back into his mouth, and changing adjectives mid-breath.

Despite his description of food flying about the inside of the car as though with were orchestrated by the wizard in Fantasia, about 10 minutes into the sketch was enough to get the gist of the story. He tried to take a humorous look at an addiction, but it was painfully obvious that he was euphorically headed for a food bender.

After the half-hour long account of his clandestine binge, that concluded with another lie to his wife, James turned from fear of not having enough to eat to fear of owls, fear of elderly people, and other fears, including the belt as a child. Though it moved a lot quicker, it seemed to take awkward twists, and turns until he landed on the “when I was growing up,” tack toward the end of the show, which seemed like a recap of a Facebook meme. “I don’t need sanitizer – I drank from the garden hose.” But, with comedic timing, there were so many in the audience who could relate, especially, post pandemic.

Despite the slog through his food addiction at the beginning, James picked up the pace in the second half, giving the audience much of what we expected from the seasoned comedian. Throughout the stand-up routine, I could hear Leah Remini’s voice in the background, or imagine her – from the sitcom King of Queens , rolling her eyes at him, as his TV wife. Though the venue has changed, and he’s on stage by himself, the comedy remains the same; glimpses of everyday life, with a twist.

kevin james irregardless tour reviews

I did stand-up for about a decade in my twenties and I loved it. I was reasonably successful, but I was never going to be a breakout star. So when I got the chance to do talk radio, I took it because I was tired of traveling and needed a new challenge. But even after being offstage for 20+ years, I still think about it. I stand in the shower and work on routines for an act I'll never do. I catch myself dreaming about being onstage and I wonder if I still have what it takes to stand in front of strangers and make them laugh. And in the abstract intellectualness of the idea, the challenge of connecting with an audience when you're older is tempting. Stand-up is mostly a young person's game. It's tough to stand on stage when you're in your 40s, 50s or 60s and connect with an audience. Even if you're a well-known comedian, the rules of the game are that you need new material. And given that most material needs to have some connection to your life, some thread of continuity to your previous work, most comedians find they struggle to make the transition. Some comics like Jay Leno have acts which are impersonal enough that they can just buy some new lines. But for most comics who came of age in the 1980s and later, they need more than that.  And audiences have watched a number of well-known stand-ups struggle with this transition. Chris Rock's most recent stand-up special was fine. But aside from the jokes about "the slap," it felt like a holding action from a man who wasn't quite sure what he wanted to talk about on stage anymore. He's a couple of decades past being a hungry comic and talking about his current life isn't exactly going to connect with the average member of his audience. Dave Chappelle's approach has been to evolve into being the comic he would have ridiculed when he was in his twenties. As I noted in my review of his most recent Netflix special , Chapelle's current comedic point-of-view is difficult for many long-time fans to accept: Given all of that, I'm not sure what to make of comedian-turned anti-Trans activist Dave Chappelle's obsession with trans people, but after watching yet another Netflix special that is equal parts limp comedy and anti-trans whining, I'd like to see Chappelle use some of that big Netflix money to hire a psychologist or two to delve into his psyche. For comedy fans of a certain age, it's difficult to see someone who you've admired veer off into irrelevance and intolerance. On a human level, you want to provide your idols every possible opportunity for redemption. Because admitting they are now this distasteful, unpleasant person is not just sad. It also makes you wonder what you didn't see in their personality in their earlier career. In a rational world, a comic who joked if he went to prison he would pretend to be trans so he could abuse women would face some sort of public reckoning. But Dave Chappelle continues to crank out Netflix specials for eight figure paydays while simultaneously whining about how his critics are trying to cancel him. Given all of this, I was honestly dreading turning on Kevin James: Irregardless . I am a huge fan of James, especially his TV work. I remember watching a live filming of an episode of King Of Queens and James was working to draw every laugh out a scene. There was one moment where he went through 5-6 different approaches to a physical bit until it got a huge laugh from the audience. That was something James did very well and it's unfortunate he didn't get more love from critics. But it's been a long time since I thought of James as a stand-up and given his age and time in industry, I had real fears about what I was in for with this special. To be kind, Kevin James: Irregardless is pretty terrible. In general, every bit goes on about 25% more than it should. And there are times when he starts to circle back around to take one too many approaches to an idea like he's some comedic Columbo with ADHD. But the most disappointing part of the special is the overall tone and topics James chooses to highlight. It's a collection of topics you'd expect an older, kind-of out-of-touch man to rant about. Kids are on their video game systems too much, participation trophies, kids today are soft, blah, blah, blah. And the last 20 or so minutes of the special are built around the premise that while James doesn't enjoy small talk and conversation, his wife enjoys it a lot. So the entire final hunk of his performance is built around a series of bits with the over-arching theme of "why won't my wife shut the fuck up?" Very little of it is funny and frankly some of it is just unpleasant to experience. There are a lot of ways stand-ups can deal with becoming older and less adventurous. Kevin James apparently decided to become the vaguely unpleasant old guy who rants about the world. Which is certainly a choice. But it's not one I'm interested in experiencing again anytime soon. Kevin James: Irregardless premieres Tuesday, January 22nd, 2024 on Prime Video.
