Metallica Kicks Off M72 World Tour: Set List and Videos

Metallica kicked off their M72 World Tour  at Amsterdam's Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday, beginning a sprawling road trip that will run through late 2024.

You can see the set list and videos from the performance below.

The metal giants kicked off their 16-song set with "Orion" — their first time using the  Master of Puppets instrumental as a show opener since 2011, according to setlist.fm . Other mainstays such as "Master of Puppets," "Battery," "Fade to Black," "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Sad but True" also appeared.

Several classic songs were notably omitted on opening night, including "Enter Sandman" and "One" (the band played no tracks off  ... And Justice for All ). Metallica is playing two shows in each city on this tour, changing set lists and opening acts each night to create a "No Repeat Weekend," so those songs could still appear at their next show.

The band also played three songs off its new album  72 Seasons : "Lux Æterna" and the live debuts of "Screaming Suicide" and "Sleepwalk My Life Away." Metallica released their 11th album two weeks ago, marking their first full-length since 2016's  Hardwired ... to Self-Destruct . The LP debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, ending a chart-topping streak that dated back to their 1991 self-titled album .

James Hetfield described the album's concept in an official statement: "Seventy-two seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told 'who we are' by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry."

Metallica will return to the Johan Cruyff Arena on Saturday with Floor Jansen and Ice Nine Kills in place of Architects and Mammoth WVH . Other support acts on different legs of the tour include Pantera , Greta Van Fleet and Five Finger Death Punch.

Setlist, Photos + Video – Metallica Kick Off World Tour Supporting New Album ’72 Seasons’

Metallica 's M72 world tour is officially underway, having kicked off in Amsterdam, Netherlands at the Johan Cruijff Arena today (April 27). The band's setlist was comprised of 16 songs, none of which will be played again on Saturday (April 29) when the metal legends return to the same venue as part of their "no repeat weekend" agenda on the 2023 and 2024 trek in support of their new album,  72 Seasons .

Prior to the album's release, Metallica performed the lead single "Lux Aeterna" as well as the the new song "If Darkness Had a Son" in front of a studio audience as part of their four-night residency on late night talk show,  Jimmy Kimmel Live! . "Lux Aeterna" was also debuted as part of the band's "All Within My Hands" benefit concert last fall as well. These were the first-ever live performances of those  72 Seasons songs and the band also shot a three-song set for an April 25 TV broadcast in Amsterdam, playing the title track to the new record , as well as "Lux Aeterna" and "Sad But True."

Technically, it was the first time Metallica played "72 Seasons" live together in an official capacity (ie: other than presumably in rehearsals for the tour), but the video footage doesn't show an audience in attendance, so make of that what you will.

The tour kickoff, which also featured special guests Mammoth WVH (setlist here ) and Architects (setlist here ).

Set to open on April 29 are  Ice Nine Kills and Nightwish singer Floor Jansen , the latter of whom replaced Five Finger Death Punch while frontman  Ivan Moody continues to recover from surgery for three hernias he sustained during a music video shoot.

Here’s Metallica’s setlist from the first night of their M72 World Tour

From Sad But True to King Nothing to Lux Æterna – here’s what Metallica played in the opening night of their M72 World Tour.

Here’s Metallica’s setlist from the first night of their M72 World Tour

Tonight, Metallica kicked off the first date of their epic M72 World Tour in Amsterdam at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The first of two shows they're playing the Dutch capital (the second is this Saturday), where they'll be playing two completely different setlists.

Not including their turns on Howard Stern and Jimmy Kimmel , this first night of the tour also marks the debut performances of brand-new tracks from the Four Horsemen's new album 72 Seasons, including Sleepwalk My Life Away and Screaming Suicide .

In a setlist full of surprises – opening on Orion?! – the band delved into their back catalogue, even bringing out King Nothing and The Day That Never Comes.

Metallica's M72 Tour will take them throughout Europe this summer, headlining two nights in each city (including a double-headline slot at Download Festival), performing 100 per cent different sets.

Who knows what the future will bring from such an ambitious tour, and a band who love to shake things up, but we tonight's show in Amsterdam is a pretty solid indication of where their heads are at, and what we can expect down the line...

Here's the full Metallica setlist from the opening night of their M72 World Tour.

METALLICA M72 World Tour kickoff: See photos, videos and setlist

And so it begins. Today (April 27th) Metallica launched their M72 World Tour in support of their new album, 72 Seasons . The two-year trek — which features two nights and two totally different sets in each city — kicked off at Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam, Netherlands, with Architects and Mammoth WVH opening the show. But the night belonged to the headliners, of course.

Metallica opened the show with a somewhat unlikely song, the epic Master of Puppets instrumental "Orion," which hadn't served as a set opener since 2011. From there, James, Kirk, Rob and Lars banged out a mix of fan favorites, deep cuts and new songs, including the live debuts of 72 Seasons' "Screaming Suicide" and "Sleepwalk My Life Away."

Check out photos, videos and the full 16-song setlist (courtesy of setlist.fm ). The tour continues this Saturday, April 29th, for the second night in Amsterdam.

Metallica live in Amsterdam: still the greatest heavy metal band around

Kicking off their ambitious ‘M72’ world tour, the four-piece celebrate the communal power of their music

“EVERYONE is welcome in the Metallica Family. Whether you’ve been a fan for 40 hours or 40 years, we all share a bond through music.”

That’s the statement the metal titans issued last summer, shortly after that  guitar-wailing scene towards the end of Stranger Things season four. As well as causing a surge in streams , that epic ‘Master Of Puppets’ moment introduced a new generation to the sheer emotional power of heavy music. Between that and 2021’s eclectic, encompassing celebration of their seminal classic ‘The Black Album’ , it’s little wonder that Metallica’s recent album ‘72 Seasons’ feels like a love letter to the genre, as well as the community it’s still inspiring.

  • READ MORE: Metallica: “We’re still trying to figure all this shit out”

Continuing that all-in family vibe, Metallica’s ‘M72’ world tour is more a travelling heavy metal circus than your typical stadium run. As well as playing two unique live sets across two nights in every city on the tour, the band have also organised pop-up shops, book signings, meet-ups and side-gigs to really complete their takeover.

Tonight (April 27) that global, two-year tour kicks off at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruijff ArenA, with Metallica at the very heart of the action. The band play on a giant ring in the middle of the stadium, meaning they are surrounded by fans on all sides for the duration of the two-hour show while Lars Ulrich ’s drum kit manages to pop up in four different locations, revolving on the spot after every track. It’s a set-up designed to maximise crowd interaction and makes the gig feel surprisingly cosy, despite taking place in a 71,000-capacity stadium.

That sense of intimacy starts before the show even begins, with a video montage of fan photos being displayed on the seven gigantic video towers that circle the pit as AC/DC ’s ‘It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘N’ Roll)’ provides the first of tonight’s many scream-a-longs. Metallica then walk through the crowd to take to the stage before diving straight into a pair of fan-favourite tracks: ‘Orion’ and ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’. James Hetfield’s grin couldn’t be wider as he launches into the first blistering solo, while Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo manage to create a two-person circle pit on the opposite side of the stage. If there are any first-night nerves, the band aren’t showing it.

“I’m glad you all came here to celebrate heavy music with your friends in Metallica,” Hetfield says before a shuddering ‘King Nothing’. “Because we are Metallica, and so are you.”

metallica

The decision to deliver two unique sets across each double-header on the tour gives Metallica space tonight to delve into their extensive back catalogue and mix things up. Live staples like ‘One’ and ‘Enter Sandman’ are replaced by the rarely played ‘The Day That Never Comes’, a complete ‘Battery’ and plenty of material from the brilliant ‘72 Seasons’. Who knows what night two on Saturday (April 29) will bring?

Alongside a brutal run-through of ‘Lux Æterna’, the thundering menace of ‘Screaming Suicide’ and ‘Sleepwalk My Life Away’’s heavy funk are both given their live debuts. The “energetic and playful” spirit of ‘72 Seasons’ is perfect for joyous occasions like these. “We’re in love with this album,” admits Hetfield at one point, and, judging by the reaction from their fans, Metallica aren’t alone in feeling that.

Apart from a scorching display of flames during ‘Fuel’ and a smattering of fireworks at the end of the night, there are none of the usual stadium rock gimmicks. This entire show is instead built around the four members of Metallica, their bond with the crowd and one another. After spending the whole gig apart, the band finally come together to address the audience at the very end of the show, before giving away fistfuls of plectrums and drum sticks – a kid no older than nine years old is personally handed Hetfield’s orange bandana.

“Just about 39 years ago, Metallica rolled into the Netherlands,” says Ulrich. “Tonight, we’re back stronger and feeling better than ever, thanks to you.” Hetfield adds: “We don’t take that for granted.”

Metallica have always been a gateway band for heavy music, but there’s a renewed excitement around them now. Tonight’s surprising, ambitious and giddy gig matches that energy at every turn. Their closing crossover track ‘Master Of Puppets’ naturally goes off, but then so do all of the songs on the setlist. From the gorgeous ‘Nothing Else Matters’ through to the unifying ‘Seek & Destroy’, the majesty of heavy music is on full display throughout the gig as Metallica prove why they’re clearly still the greatest metal band around.

The heavy metal titans’ show at the 56,000 capacity Johan Cruijff ArenA was the first of two concerts at the venue, with the band returning on Saturday night (29th April).

Metallica’s multi-year trek sees them play two nights at every location with each No Repeat Weekend featuring two completely different setlists and support line-ups.

The tour also features a bold new in-the-round stage design that relocates the famed Metallica Snake Pit to centre stage.

Last night (27th April), Metallica opened their career-spanning set with ‘Orion’ for the first time in 12 years, and the 16-song performance culminated with ‘Master of Puppets.’

‘72 Seasons’ tracks ‘Screaming Suicide’ and ‘Sleepwalk My Life Away’ both had their live debut, while seminal songs that featured elsewhere included ‘For Who the Bell Tolls’, ‘Fade to Black’, ‘Battery’, ‘Seek & Destroy’, ‘Nothing Else Matters’ and ‘Ride the Lightning’.

M72 World Tour

m72 world tour amsterdam setlist

We told you about our new album 72 Seasons , so what’s next now that we’ve escaped the studio? Hit the road, of course! You want a tour, we’ve got a tour... how about two full years worth of shows?!?!

Over the past few years, we have been so inspired by the dedication and family/community vibe of the fans who traveled to San Francisco for our recent weekend celebrations, first in 2019 with the two S&M2 shows, followed by last year’s 40th Anniversary shows. On top of that, we had a blast being a part of the 2021 Wimmer Festivals when we played two nights in one city, each with a totally different setlist. With all of that in mind, the M72 tour was born!

Starting in April of 2023, we’ll be visiting 22 different cities around the world and playing two nights in each city, with each “No Repeat Weekend” show a completely unique experience: Two totally different set lists with two different bands opening the show each night! Purchase a two-day ticket, and you won’t see the same song twice for a total of over 30 songs spanning our 40+ years of being lucky enough to make music. Most of the shows (sorry, not all - we tried!) will be on Fridays and Sundays, so we’ll be sure to have lots of extracurricular events for you to hang with fellow Metallica fans at before the shows kick-off and on the Saturday night in between.

Presented worldwide by Liquid Death and Blackened American Whiskey (in North America only), and brought to you by our friends at Live Nation, the M72 tour also launches a completely different look for us in stadiums – we’ll be in the round in the middle of the field. On top of that, the Snake Pit has been relocated to the center of the stage so that fans there will have a complete 360 view of the show. Each weekend offers a variety of Enhanced Experiences , ranging from access to a meet and greet, production and stage tour, food and beverage in the “Black Box” lounge to early entry into the venue and the aforementioned Snake Pit. The very popular “Black Laminate” is back, now known as the “I Disappear Ticket,” and is the ultimate pass for the fan who wants to run away with us for multiple weekends. Grab one of these and attend every show on your continent or in the world! For more information about Enhanced Experiences and I Disappear Tickets, visit wearesuper.co/metallica .

In keeping with the theme of two completely unique shows each weekend, we’re excited to share the stage with different bands each night, including some we have traveled with before and new friends who are joining us for the first time. Signing up for the entire adventure with us are Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills, and MammothWVH, and some of you will see Pantera, Architects, Greta Van Fleet, or Volbeat, depending on the shows you attend. All the details are in the listing of dates below and on the individual show pages.

Two-day discounted tickets will be on sale Friday, December 2, for all shows. Fan Club presales start early on Wednesday, November 30, with various other presales beginning later that day and throughout the week. To request your Fan Club presale code, visit metallica.com/presale-code . If you cannot join us for the entire weekend, single-day tickets will be available starting January 20, 2023.

A portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the band’s All Within My Hands foundation. Founded in 2017, AWMH’s efforts to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band have raised nearly $13 million – providing $5.9 million in grants to career and technical education programs in the US, over $2.5 million to combat food insecurity, and more than $3.2 million to disaster relief efforts worldwide.

We cannot wait to embark on this new adventure, play some new music, and spend our weekends in ’23 and ’24 with YOU!

Show 1 Support Europe: Architects & Mammoth WVH ** Show 2 Support Europe: Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills * Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills play Show 1 in Paris, Architects & Mammoth WVH play Show 2 in Paris ** Volbeat replaces Architects on Show 1 in Gothenburg

Show 1 Support North America: Pantera & Mammoth WVH *** Show 2 Support North America: Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills *** Greta Van Fleet replaces Pantera on show 1 both weekends in Mexico City

Got a question about the M72 World Tour? Look for the answer in our FAQ.

Citi is the official card of the M72 Tour. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets in the U.S. beginning Wednesday, November 30 at 2:00 pm local time until Thursday, December 1 at 10:00 pm local time through the Citi Entertainment program. Metallica Kick Off 2023-2024 World Tour in Amsterdam: Video and Setlist

The metal legends will be playing two unique sets over two nights in each city

Metallica Kick Off 2023-2024 World Tour in Amsterdam: Video and Setlist

Metallica kicked off their 2023-2024 “M72 World Tour” at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam on Thursday evening (April 27th) in support of their new album, 72 Seasons . The two-year outing ( tickets available here ) features the metal icons playing two completely unique sets over two nights in each city.

For the first night in Amsterdam, the metal titans showcased three songs from 72 Seasons , including “Lux Æterna,” “Screaming Suicide,” and “Sleepwalk My Life Away,” with the latter two receiving their live debuts.

Elsewhere in the 16-song set, 1984’s Ride the Lightning, 1986’s Master of Puppets , and 1991’s self-titled LP (aka “The Black Album”) were equally represented with three songs each, while no more than one song was played from any other albums.

The concert kicked off with the instrumental “Orion,” marking the first time since 2011 that Metallica opened a show with the Master of Puppets classic. The set ended with the epic “Master of Puppets,” which had a major pop-culture moment last year after being featured in Netflix’s Stranger Things .

Other highlights included “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Sad but True,” “Battery,” and “Seek & Destroy.”

For fans wondering why staples like “Enter Sandman” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Creeping Death” didn’t make the cut, it’s likely they’ll be performed Saturday night (April 29th) at the same venue. As mentioned, the band is not repeating any songs over the two shows in each city on the tour. Update: Metallica made good on their promise, as they p layed a completely unique set on night two of the set.

Metallica just threw Amsterdam the world's biggest heavy metal party

Metallica's first set of the m72 world tour was a triumphant, rousing success.

James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich on stage

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

“BURN, AMSTERDAM, BURN!” James Hetfield yells during Fuel , as bursts of fire erupt around the ring-shaped stage at the 71,000-capacity Johan Cruijff Arena. It’s the first date of Metallica 's worldwide M72 Tour, in support of new album 72 Seasons , and the atmosphere is one of pure celebration. The band are encircled by eight towers topped with wraparound video screens beaming the action to the nosebleeds, while inside the ring is their infamous ‘snake pit’ where fans can get within touching distance. It doesn’t get much bigger than this.

But first, Architects . Metallica have scheduled two shows per city, each with a different setlist and support bands, and the Brightonians are doing the honours tonight. All those songs from last year’s The Classic Symptoms Of A Broken Spirit , that sound like they were written for stadiums? They live up to the promise. The hooky, industrial-flecked likes of Deep Fake and Tear Gas are resolutely crushing. “You are currently witnessing a lot of boys – men – on this stage, living their wildest dreams,” grins frontman Sam Carter, reminding himself how far they’ve come. “Our job is to warm you up. ARE YOU WARM?”

At 8.35pm, AC/DC ’s It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock’n’Roll) blasts over the sound system, followed by familiar intro tape The Ecstasy Of Gold . The Four Horsemen appear, spread out around the stage, opening with Orion for the first time in 12 years. What’s immediately clear is how much fun they’re having, a grinning Kirk running up to fist-bump a grinning James. During For Whom The Bell Tolls , Rob and Kirk literally run rings around each other. There’s already a party atmosphere in Amsterdam due to national holiday Koningsdag (King’s Day), which seems to involve wearing orange and getting wasted, and James dedicates King Nothing to the occasion.

Much has been made about James’ personal lyrics on 72 Seasons , and it takes guts to belt out Screaming Suicide to a football stadium, especially for the first time. “Are you out there?” he asks the audience, who raise their voices in encouragement. A satisfyingly chunky Sleepwalk My Life Away also gets debuted, Rob Trujillo so pumped that he mimes a mic drop at the end.

Their latest material might be well received, but Metallica know why people are here. Following a lighter-waving Nothing Else Matters , still fresh after 32 years (James: “That song’s alright, huh?”), they embark on a winning streak of Sad But True , Ride The Lightning , Battery and Fuel . Besides the latter’s explosion of pyro, there are no other surprises tonight – just Metallica being the best at what they do.

Then, James teases the fans. “Would you like a new song or an old song?” he asks, the response indicating the second option. “Alright, new song: SEEK & DESTROYYYYY!” He’s yelling so loudly, he misses Lars’ count-in. When the song finally starts, everyone loses their minds. After closing with a triumphant Master Of Puppets , Kirk peeling out the solo that won them a new generation of fans via Stranger Things , James stands silently on the stage as the house lights come up and the crowd cheer, and cheer, and cheer. As techs remove his monitors, he takes it all in, mouthing ‘thank yous’ to individuals in the snake pit. “Are you sure?” he asks the Johan Cruijff Arena in disbelief, as the standing ovation continues. Metallica

“No repeat weekend.”

That’s how Metallica has branded the setlists for its upcoming M72 stadium tour, celebrating both the band’s new album 72 Seasons (out April 14) and 40 years of thrash-metal dominance.

Each city stop on the new roadshow — Metallica’s first full trek in four years —  includes two nights promising completely different sets, encouraging Metallica lifers to attend both gigs for a deep dive into the band’s maniacal catalog.

As the tour kicks off in Amsterdam April 27, we’ve been fantasizing about what a given night will look like — and which songs will make the cut during which show. Surely, as James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo exit a city, there will be a consensus among fans as to which night offered the better gig.

Of course, it’s a matter of opinion. The most devout diehards would be happy with a set more focused on deep cuts and credence given to ‘83’s seminal Kill ‘Em All debut, celebrating its 40th anniversary this summer, while the multi-generational Metallica families would be down to hear more off 2016’s explosive Hardwired … To Self-Destruct. And of course, there’s the contrarian who actually wants to hear stuff off St. Anger .

With all of this, here’s our dream setlist for the tour; a best-case-scenario M72 set, taking into consideration the band’s past tours — and leaving enough meat on the bone for night two. The setlist below would clock in around two hours, in step with their massive Hardwired tour that ran from 2017 to 2019.

Let’s rage!

“Fight Fire With Fire”

In this dream, Metallica saves more of the 21st Century stuff for night two and instead buckles down on the fan-beloved oldies, a commitment made apparent immediately. As the stadium fades to black (get it), an acoustic, almost baroque guitar melody begins to blare from the PA. The band takes the stage, Ulrich leads them in with some big, extended cymbal fill and boom — Hammett’s first godkiller riff gets the place moving.

“Trapped Under Ice”

The band does not pause, does not welcome the crowd, not yet. Instead they remain in 1984 with another Ride the Lightning shredder, thrilling elder fans who attribute their hearing loss to seeing the band about 10 too many times. Some wild winter scene plays out on the Jumbotron, with an abominable snowman emerging from a frozen lake. He inexplicably breathes blue flame; no one bats an eye.

“Disposable Heroes”

We’ll give “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” and “Orion” to night two and here harness the maximum octane of “Disposable Heroes,” the night’s first offering from Master of Puppets, with its forever-relevant barkings of the horrors and futility of war. “Back to the front!” the crowd roars. It’s largely been Hammett’s show so far as the solo on “Heroes” is pure guitar triumph, noodling its way to hell as a warzone rages on the big screen.

“Wherever I May Roam”

Okay, back to the Black Album fan favorites and another titanic sing-along, as fans get the heartiest Hetfield “ yeah-yeah ”s of the night so far. It’s also a relative break for the band; less demanding parts, steadying them for what’s to come.

“For Whom the Bell Tolls”

The stadium goes dark again, momentarily, as the band catches its breath amid the cheers of 60,000 fans. Then the monster video screen illuminates once more. It depicts an unholy black church built into a mountainside. The camera zooms in to focus on the belltower. The bell begins to ring. The crowd shrieks as Trujillo begins the famous bass melody, passed from the late Cliff Burton to Jason Newsted to him. Trujillo does his funny crabwalk thing as Hetfield hammers the mammoth vocal. If this rendition of “For Whom the Bell Tolls” is anything like the beast brought to stadiums on the Hardwired Tour, the crowd bellowing “Take a look to the sky just before you die/ It’s the last time you will! ” will be enough to send fissures through the parking lot asphalt. An unlucky Kia Optima tumbles into the abyss.

“Lux Æterna”

Hetfield talks to the crowd for the first time and plugs the new album 72 Seasons, asking how many in the audience have bought the new album. Everyone screams in affirmation and they are indeed telling the truth — metal fans still buy records! And so the band launches into the only new track on the night, the searing and fun lead single “Lux Æterna” — which unloads its stadium-ready chorus as people sing along, without a clue of what “Lux Æterna” actually means. A few dudes who drank their Bud Light tallboys a little too fast run to the bathroom.

“Atlas, Rise!”

The best song off their preceding LP Hardwired … To Self-Destruct (and a 2018 Grammy nominee for best rock song) comes hurtling through next, with a riff and drum crash that beats the crowd into submission. Meanwhile, a 50-foot tall Atlas — Greek mythology’s eternal shoulderer of the heavens — inflates behind the band, holding a globe large enough to be rented as an AirBnb. Yes, Atlas literally rises! Fans gawk as the song’s hard-rock-and-blues chug soldiers on.

“Creeping Death”

For the next 80 minutes or so, nothing released in the last 25 years is referenced. Everything is for the graying diehards, beginning with the mammoth march of “Creeping Death.” The call-and-response “die!” chants force a helicopter flying overhead to be diverted. Fans don’t yet know this is the last Ride the Lightning track of the night — “Fade to Black,” the title track and “The Call of Ktulu” are saved for night two — but that’s cool, there’s much hell-raising still to be had. So let it be written!

“Harvester of Sorrow”

As far as … And Justice For All goes, we’re also fine giving “One” and “Blackened” to the inferior second night, and providing an underappreciated track for the real fans in “Harvester of Sorrow,” for which the bass is turned up so loudly it nearly cracks a few fans’ sternums in the front rows. The relatively simpler riff allows for steady headbanging. A few more casual fans make one last run to the beer stand to find out it’s about to close — the true harvesters of sorrow!

“The Unforgiven”

An acoustic guitar is brought out. Everyone takes a breath. No one is willing to admit they’re thrilled to sit a spell as the Black Album power ballad kicks in. Hammett still annihilates the solos, of course.

Hetfield schmoozes with the crowd a little, asking whoever’s drunk to throw up their devil horns. Heavy metal, man! The frontman then begins to note how the band’s seminal debut album Kill ‘Em All turns 40 in July, and to celebrate, they are going to play a mini-set. The next 15 minutes are pure speedfreak bedlam, beginning with the aptly named “Whiplash,” backed by the band’s oldest photos plastered on the big screen, surrounded by bloody hammer iconography. They were just kids!

“The Four Horsemen”

Onward with the galloping riffs! Around the stadium, the know-it-all friend of every group is sure to point out how Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine co-wrote the song before he was fired. Luckily no one can hear them over the solos, which signal intelligent life in nearby galaxies. Everyone is thrilled, as “Four Horsemen” has been only scantily performed over the last decade.

“Seek and Destroy”

The band ties a pretty, pulverizing bow on Kill ‘Em All with the album’s most enduring, well-known track — it feels like home for fans who’ve been with them since their mighty Megaforce Records beginnings, sleeping on floors in New Jersey. Everyone sings the repetitive hook and cheers once the big Judas Priest-y solo begins to unfurl.

“King Nothing” (with Phil Anselmo)

As the mini-set concludes, a jewel-studded crown appears on the screen, rotating gloriously as it descends onto the skull of a festering zombie — night two can have “Fuel,” we’ll take this killer third single from Load, with its incendiary hard-rock chorus. To boost the track, the band welcomes fellow metal god Phil Anselmo (Pantera is opening the tour) to the stage, for some extra fury. The song gives way to an extended outro with a snippet of “Walk” as the stadium’s foundation quakes.

The band turns “Battery,” usually used as a set or encore opener, on its hurtling head, closing the main set with a final burst of pandemonium. The acoustic riff hypes the crowd and then Hetfield, under a spotlight, unleashes that famed, punishing riff. Hammett delivers the knockout blow with one of the best solos in his pantheon and band trots off. No fans dare leave, knowing what’s still to come.

ENCORE : “Master of Puppets”

After a few moments and requisite “Metal-lica!” chants, the foursome re-emerges. Hetfield has swapped his sweat-soaked black t-shirt for an identical (albeit dry) black t-shirt. And then it hits: Dun … dun-dun-dun! The stadium erupts once more, let’s go! The cosmic “Master! MASTER!” sing-along tears a chasm into the fabric of time and space, shifting dimensions and laws of physics. Puddles of Michelob Ultra form floating helixes throughout the concourse, frightening concession workers. The Kia Optima rises from the Earth’s molten core to its rightful parking space.

“Nothing Else Matters”

The stadium returns to this plane as Hammett strums those open strings, summoning the night’s final power ballad. Fans know the night is slowly coming to an end, but no one wants to believe it as they wail the iconic chorus: “Never cared for what they do! Never cared for what they know-ow-owwww!”

“Enter Sandman”

Hetfield shouts that they’ve got one more, and promises to “see you for night two!” before unloading metal’s most recognizable riff. It’s a party, a finale, a storm of thunder and bursting flames from the pyro cannons. In this moment, no one is sick of “Sandman” anymore, happily barking “exit light, enter night!” Though once Hetfield reaches the spoken prayer part, all the dads begin to file out, hoping to beat the traffic. But then they miss the extended outro, with pieces from “Frayed Ends of Sanity,” borrowing from the Hardwired Tour.

It’s an unforgettable night of metal prowess, and a culmination of one of rock’s bar-none most untouchable acts of the last half-century. But who knows — maybe the real tour will be even better than this fan-fiction fever dream. We’ll be counting the days!
