Always an eagerly awaited event, the Gala marks the opening of the ballet season. On the stage of the Palais Garnier, the magnificent Défilé du Ballet presents the entire Company. The School’s students join the Étoiles adorned for the occasion in sumptuous tiaras and tutus designed by Chanel. Three female choreographers are honoured in this Gala with a decidedly contemporary approach. Created in 2016, Crystal Pite’s The Seasons’ Canon is already a classic in the Opera's repertoire. Marion Motin’s The Last Call and Xie Xin’s Horizon are both first creations for the Company’s dancers.

Paris Ballet Performances at Palais Garnier
Our favorite way of visiting the stunning Palais Garnier is by attending a ballet performance here. The building is magnificent when it's alive with people and performers. This season's ballet and opera performances include an evening of four works by Czech choreographer Jiri Kylian and a performance of Donizetti's opera, Don Pasquale . To ensure you get seats at a performance be sure to order your tickets in advance.
Paris Ballet at Opera Bastille
The national ballet company of France is known as Paris Opera Ballet . While most ballet performances in Paris are held at Palais Garnier , there are a number of performances staged each year at the national opera house, Opera de la Bastille , or simply Opera Bastille . As its name implies, though, Opera Bastille is best known for the operas it stages. This season brings a rare performance of Gounod's opera, Romeo and Juliette .
Discover What's On When You're Here...
Discover what's on when you're here, about the paris ballet dancers.
The oldest national ballet company in the world, the Paris Ballet is also one of the youngest. That's because the average age of the ballet dancers is just 25 years and, because they are civil servants, they must retire at age 42, even if they are at the top of their form. That doesn't necessarily mean their dancing career is over. Many dancers are invited as guests by other companies. For example, Nöella Pontois made her last performance in The Nutcracker when she turned 50.
Most of the dancers at the ballet come from the Paris Opera Ballet School and enter the company at the corps de ballet level of quadrille . Each year, there is a competition to fill the few remaining spaces in the company. The annual corps de ballet exam also allows dancers to move up the ranks of the hierarchy: quadrille, coryphée, sujet, premier danseur , and etoile . Currently, there are 154 dancers, 16 premieur danseurs and 16 stars.
Etoile , or star, is used to describe a principal dancer in many ballet companies, however at the Paris Ballet, it is a prestigious title, and is at the discretion of the director. An Etoile must have star quality, and possess a certain magic that makes you unable to take your eyes off of him or her.
Experience the Splendor Of Versailles
Paris opera ballet history.
The roots of the Paris Opera Ballet go back to the dances and practices of court life of Louis XIV of the late 1600s. In 2013, the school celebrated its tricentennial.
Today, most ballet performances are held at the Palais Garnier , a magnificent theatre built between 1861 and 1875 by architect Charles Garnier. Its majestic gilt finishes and grand staircases were engineered to allow the rich and famous to admire themselves and others during the long intermissions.
A performance at the Palais Garnier should be on your short list of things to do. With over 180 performances a year, you can catch a show during their season that extends from September to July. Just being in the gorgeous Palais Garnier is a feast for the eyes, but add to that a performance by the top dancers in the field, and it will become a dazzling memory.

What's in a name.
Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris is its official French name, and it can be quite confusing to distinguish between Paris opera & ballet — for good reason.
Since its beginnings in the 17th century, the name of the company has changed several times. In 1661, Louis XIV founded the Académie Royale de Danse (Royal Academy of Dance). Then, in 1669, Louis granted permission to form a separate academy for opera called the Académie d'Opéra (Academy of Opera). The following year, that company added dance to the repertoire, calling it the Académie Royale de Musique.
In 1713, the Paris Opera Ballet School (École de Danse de l'Opéra de Paris) opened. A century and a half later, in 1875, the group moved to its permanent home at Palais Garnier. The majority of ballet performances take place at Palais Garnier.

Paris Opera Ballet 2024-2025 Season
The Paris Opera Ballet 2024-2025 season features the return of Rudolf Nureyev’s The Sleeping Beauty after a decade-long hiatus, dramatic full-length ballets, contemporary works, and pieces that are making their company premieres.
Paris Opera Ballet 2024-2025 Season Trailer
Paris opera ballet 2024-2025 season schedule, paris opera ballet: opening gala.
October 1, 2024 | Palais Garnier
Launching the dance season, the traditional Ballet Parade brings together the students of the Paris Opera Ballet School and all the dancers of the Company.
Following are William Forsythe’s Rearray and Blake Works I and Johan Inger’s Impasse .
Paris Opera Ballet: William Forsythe / Johan Inger
October 4 – November 3, 2024 | Palais Garnier
William Forsythe brings two piece t to the program: Rearray , which makes its company debut with a reworking specifically for Paris Opera Ballet dancers, and Blake Works I , whose “hymn to classical technique expressed through fractured lines and geometric perfection, to the sound of seven songs by James Blake” was made on the company in 2016.
Another debut is Johan Inger’s Impasse which also interweaves a classical line with contemporary vocabulary and questions the relationship between the group and the individual, seemingly suggesting that we are never as strong as when we are together.
Paris Opera Ballet: Mayerling
October 29 – November 16, 2024 | Palais Garnier
Kenneth MacMillan’s ballet, inspired by this mystery behind the death of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Rudolf, was first performed in London in 1978 and entered the Paris Opera’s repertoire in 2022.
Set to feverish music by Franz Liszt, Mayerling unfolds an immensely theatrical neo-classical choreography. Grandiose scenes are interwoven with intimate scenes in sumptuous costumes whose autumnal hues reflect the decline of a world destined to disappear.
Paris Opera Ballet: Paquita
December 5, 2024 – January 4, 2025 | Opéra Bastille
“When I recreate a ballet, I search for the fragrance of the period.” – Pierre Lacotte
Pierre Lacotte, a lover of the Romantic repertoire, reconstructed Joseph Mazilier’s Paquita in 2001. With its sumptuous sets and costumes, his Paquita tells the story of a young gypsy girl while portraying a picturesque Spain combining mime and characterful dances with dazzingly vivacious virtuoso technique.
Paris Opera Ballet: Play
December 7, 2024 – January 4, 2025 | Palais Garnier
A pool filled with green balls, giant cubes suspended from the ceiling, balloon games and breathtaking chases… In Play , Alexander Ekman addresses adults and wonders what we do with our childhood games.
With a set design as impressive as it is offbeat, dreamlike scenes punctuated by Mikael Karlsson’s jazzy music and a whimsical approach that thumbs its nose at the seriousness of adulthood, the Swedish choreographer’s work is playful and transgressive.
Paris Opera Ballet: Onegin
February 8 – March 4, 2025 | Palais Garnier
From Pushkin’s verse novel Eugene Onegin , a seminal work of 19th-century Russian literature, John Cranko has created a ballet set to music by Tchaikovsky centered around five characters: the poet Lenski, sweet Olga’s fiancé; Tatiana, her older sister, in love with the dandy Onegin, who neglects her before realizing, far too late, when she marries Prince Gremin, that he has wasted his life.
Paris Opera Ballet: The Sleeping Beauty
March 8 – July 12, 2025 | Opéra Bastille
While retaining the spectacular enchantment of The Sleeping Beauty and the sparkling charm of Tchaikovsky’s music, Rudolf Nureyev brought a new balance to Marius Petipa’s original choreography by giving more prominence to the male roles, particularly that of the Prince.
Absent from the Paris Opera stage for ten years, there is no doubt that Aurore and Désiré, the Lilac Fairy and the Blue Bird, not forgetting the terrible Carabosse, will fascinate new generations.
Paris Opera Ballet: Sharon Eyal / Mats Ek
March 27 – April 18, 2025 | Palais Garnier
Sharon Eyal, former dancer and artistic collaborator of the Batsheva Dance Company, comes to grips with OCD Love , a 2015 piece she proposes in a new version for the Opera’s dancers. Inspired by a text from American poet-slammer Neil Hilborn, who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder, the work underlines the difficulty of loving.
The complexity of human relationships is also a theme of Mats Ek’s Appartement . Not without humor, the various sketches confront the ballet’s characters with their solitude through everyday objects such as bidets, television sets and stoves. From the armchair solo to the grand pas de deux and the hoover jig, the Swedish choreographer mixes styles in energetic dance set to the percussive music of Fleshquartet.
Paris Opera Ballet: Sylvia
May 8 – June 4, 2025 | Palais Garnier
Originally conceived by Louis Mérante, Sylvia was the first ballet to be performed at the newly-opened Palais Garnier in 1876, to a brilliant score by Léo Delibes. But it is the version by Manuel Legris, a Paris Opera Étoile dancer and the director of the Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company, that is making its repertoire debut.
The choreographer brings psychological depth to the libretto by adding a prologue portraying Diana’s conflict-ridden world and gives greater prominence to the male roles.
Paris Opera Ballet: Hofesh Shechter Creation

Highlights: Swan Lake
Following on from Snow White and Romeo and Juliet, the choreographer Angelin Preljocaj takes on another monument of the classical repertoire: Swan Lake. In this latest production, he puts a new spin on the story by transposing it into modern times and casting a new light on the characters’ motivations and emotions. Featuring contemporary arrangements of Tchaikovsky’s masterful score, this new Swan Lake is an opportunity to rediscover the dance of the swan in a world of mystery and fantasy. Ring in the new year with the stunning Swan Lake at the Royal Opera of Versailles, a special occasion for all the family.
To make your experience an unforgettable one, you will be able to choose from a selection of unique add-ons upon booking, such as a glass of champagne and an exclusive programme. See below for more details.
Story: Swan Lake
Swan Lake, the great masterwork of classical ballet, is inspired by a folk story about the love between a prince and a princess who has been turned into a swan following a curse. In this new version, Preljocaj transfers the story to the world of industry and finance. Fossil fuel deposits at the lakeside form the backdrop for the meeting of Odette, a young ecologist transformed into a swan by Siegfriedm a businessman who fears her opposition, son of an oil company CEO, and Odile, Odette’s evil counterpart. Oscillating between real life and fantasy, this tragic ballet is performed with great panache by the 26 dancers of the Preljocaj company. An end-of-year treat not to be missed!

Opéra Bastille
Designed by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, the building was commissioned by French President François Mitterrand and inaugurated in 1989. For years, many had lamented the lack of a modern venue in Paris capable of welcoming modern concerts and performances with different acoustic approaches, and the flexibility that a modulable venue lends. A movement started in the 1960s called for a larger new venue in Paris that would appeal to the masses, a modern compliment to the elaborate Palais Garnier. Just over 100 years after the inauguration of the Palais Garnier, the demands finally won over the newly-elected President Mitterrand, who supported the project as the headliner among many modern works launched during his term. Selecting the popular Bastille neighbourhood for its ease of accessibility from Paris and the surrounding areas, the old Bastille Train Station was destroyed to make way for the construction of the new venue. The building was completed just in time for the bicentenary of the French Revolution.
The venue has undergone many changes in direction resulting from varying political affiliations, and has undergone major renovations since its construction to repair and to soundproof the entire structure. Unlike other auditorium designs, each and every seat at the Opéra Bastille guarantees an unrestricted view of the stage. With its white glass ceiling, crisp gray compliments, and black seating adorned with rich oak, the venue is an ode to modernity and simplistic design. From the exterior, made of blue granite from Brittany and blocks of glass, light is reflected from every corner of this angular venue.

Boston Ballet’s 60th anniversary season to include four world premieres — and a trip to Paris
The 2023-24 season’s six programs also include boston premieres, and of course, the annual nutcracker.
Boston Ballet’s 2023–24 season at the Citizens Bank Opera House will include world premieres by artistic director Mikko Nissinen, company dancer My’Kal Stromile, Helen Pickett, and Ken Ossola. It will see the return of resident choreographer Jorma Elo’s “Bach Cello Suites” and “Carmen,” Jiří Kylián’s “Bella Figura,” William Forsythe’s “Blake Works III (The Barre Project),” and Frederick Ashton’s “Cinderella,” along with the company’s annual production of “The Nutcracker.” And it’ll be capped off, May 27-30, by Boston Ballet’s return to the Théâtre de Champs-Élysées in Paris.
“Fall Experience” (Oct. 5-15) will feature live on-stage music. “Bach Cello Suites,” which the company premiered in 2015 and reprised in 2018, has its score played by an on-stage cellist. Hans van Manen’s 1982 duet “Trois Gnossiennes” (a Boston premiere) is set to Erik Satie’s piano work of the same name. Nissinen says, “it’s sort of a hypnotic, meditative piece”; he compares it to Pickett’s “Tsukiyo” but calls it “more minimalist.” Stromile’s world premiere will likely also have on-stage piano. And then Akram Khan’s 2010 “Vertical Road” (also a Boston premiere) will go in a different direction, set to a commissioned score by Nitin Sawhney and drawing inspiration from the Sufi tradition and Persian poet and philosopher Rumi. “I’ve been talking with Akram for a while,” Nissinen says, “and this is a great way for him to get to know the company, and it’s a really gorgeous piece. His work is so unique, he brings so much of who he is, his classical Indian jazz background and then an incredible contemporary element.”
Following “The Nutcracker” (Nov. 24-Dec. 31), “Winter Experience” (Feb. 22-March 3) will feature a “reimagining” of Marius Petipa’s “Raymonda” by Nissinen and former Paris Opera Ballet étoile Florence Clerc, with new sets and costumes by Robert Perdziola. “‘Raymonda’ is one of those ballets that is a little bit problematic today to do with the story,” Nissinen points out, “so I’m giving it a treatment in three different scenes. The first scene is the beginning of the ballet, with Raymonda’s entrance and the grand waltz, and then I will do a sort of abridged dream scene, and the third scene starts with a big character dance and a sort of expanded classical divertissements that will finish with a new grand galop as a finale.”

Rounding out the program will be Pickett’s “Petal,” which Boston Ballet had planned to present in March 2020, and her world premiere, “SISU.” In Finnish, Nissinen explains, “‘sisu’ means determination and perseverance. Helen picked the name.” He describes the pair as “like a brother and a sister, two pieces that exist within the same huge walls but with a different coloring.”
March will bring “Cinderella” (March 14-24), which Boston Ballet last did in 2019. The company teamed up with Ballet West and Cincinnati Ballet to buy a Royal Ballet production that all three companies could adapt and use. “‘Cinderella’ didn’t really have any more sets that are rentable,” Nissinen says, “and we felt it’s important to keep the classics in everybody’s repertoire. I’m thrilled to have Ashton’s version back with whole new sets and costumes that our audiences haven’t seen.”
“Carmen” (April 25-May 5) will begin with Clerc’s staging of the iconic “Kingdom of the Shades” scene from Petipa’s “La Bayadère.” “This is going to be just a clean, classical dance, no real story,” Nissinen says. “It’ll be abstract classical ballet.” The evening will conclude with Elo’s “Carmen,” which is set to Rodion Shchedrin’s 45-minute “Carmen Suite.” Boston Ballet last did the piece in 2009; this production will have new lighting by Mikki Kunttu and new sets by Benjamin Phillips.
The Boston season will finish with “Spring Experience” (May 9-19): Ossola’s world premiere; “Bella Figura,” which the company last did in March 2022; and “Blake Works III (The Barre Project),” which we saw in May 2022. Ossola’s “Zoom In” was part of the company’s 2021 “Process & Progress” virtual program; he’s also been the stager for “Bella Figura.” His as yet untitled premiere will draw inspiration, Nissinen says, from Michelangelo’s “non-finito” “Prisoners,” four statues that struggle to free themselves from their blocks of marble. The score will be composed by Boston Ballet music director Mischa Santora.
After that it’s off to Paris May 27-30, where Boston Ballet will present “Bach Cello Suites,” “Bella Figura,” and “Blake Works III (The Barre Project).” About the company’s previous visit, in 2019, Nissinen recalls, “I have not really seen that kind of reception in our industry. It was sensational the last time, the kind of attention and embrace we got from the public. Our stock was so sky high, and there were so many opportunities for us opening all around the world, but then COVID hit. I hope this tour can have the same kind of impact and start paving the way to the future.”

Rome Opera Ballet to visit Paris, Dubai, Barcelona and Liège in tours beginning this month
24 April 2024 by Gramilano Leave a Comment
Paris in April, Dubai in May, Barcelona in July and Liège in November – these are the four destinations that the Rome Opera Ballet will reach on its international tours scheduled for 2024.
The company, directed by Eleonora Abbagnato , will make its first stop in Paris where Abbagnato was an étoile with the Paris Opera Ballet, the first Italian dancer to be promoted to that role.
For her return to the city, at the Palais des Congrès, Abbagnato will dance with Friedemann Vogel and the company, in clothes designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri of Christian Dior Couture ( Les deux nuits 26, 27 and 28 April).
Subsequent destinations mark three world premieres for Rome's opera house: at the Dubai Opera ( Les deux nuits 25 and 26 May), at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona ( Swan Lake 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 July) and at the Opéra Royal De Wallonie in Liège ( Giselle 14, 15, 16 and 17 November).
It is no coincidence that I have appointed Eleonora Abbagnato as president of the Upper Council of the Performing Arts – said the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano – I appreciate her value and extraordinary artistic ability. The tours that are about to be undertaken by the Opera di Roma underline the prestige of our opera houses. I'm sure they'll be a great success.
The tour begins with Les deux nuits , a double bill that couples Angelin Preljocaj 's Nuit Romaine together with Giorgio Mancini's Nuit Dansée (a world premiere). The programme, with a contemporary feel, is suited for the two modern stages where is will be seen: the Grand Amphithéâtre of the Palais des Congrès in Paris (where in 2023 the company saw full houses in the 3700-spectator venue) and that of the Dubai Opera.
The five performances at the Gran Teatre del Liceu show Swan Lake in a version created by Benjamin Pech in 2018, with sets and costumes by Aldo Buti. Tchaikovsky's score will be performed by the Orquesta del Gran Teatre del Liceu conducted by Koen Kessels.
The last tour sees the debut of the company at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège where Carla Fracci 's 2004 version of Giselle , with costumes and sets by Anna Anni, will be performed. The company took the ballet to Oman last year.
The Mayor of Rome and President of the Opera House board, Roberto Gualtieri, said:
I am proud of how the ballet company of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, under Eleonora Abbagnato, has reached a level of excellence on the world scene. Dance is also poetry, capable of providing emotions by speaking without words and offering beauty to the spectator through the harmony and elegance of gestures. The excellence of the corps de ballet of Rome Opera is not only an encounter with art but a great opportunity to encourage new talents. And these new international tours are a further opportunity to showcase the dancers and demonstrate the level of professionalism they have achieved.
