Getting there.

Phuket is an island, though it seems to be a much easier island to access than many others in the world. The vast majority of visitors simply arrive through Phuket International Airport, located around 24 miles from the city center.

It’s usually cheaper to fly into Bangkok, however, so if you’d like to see Bangkok you may just want to allot a day or two there. From there, you can simply take the train from Hua Lamphong Station to Surat Thani and then take a bus to Phuket. You should not miss Bangkok, we would recommend a tour of the city .

Getting Around

Phuket is pretty simple to navigate, thank goodness. You’ll find many varying private and public transportation options. If you’re staying in a resort area, you may just be able to walk around without even thinking of 3 rd -party transportation.

Tuk-Tuk – These are unique to a lot of people, and the experience can be a fun one. However, they’re more ideal for shorter journeys, due to their small size and rather bumpy ride at times. Not only that, but if you’re in a resort area like Patong, they can get kind of pricey. Make sure you agree upon a rate before heading off.

Taxis/Grab – Taxis are pretty much everywhere around Phuket, but particularly in tourist spots and resort areas. Metered taxis are also located right outside the main entrance/exit at the airport. For the first 2 km, fares will be 50 baht and around 8 baht for each km after that. If you’re going long distances, try to settle on a flat rate beforehand.

There is no Uber here, but instead “Grab”. This app-based service is preferred by many visitors as it’s more reliable and gives you more of a sense of security as your ride is tracked and your rate is already settled.

Buses – Known as “songtaews”, these open-air buses are bright blue and easy to spot. The cool thing is they even write the destinations in English if you don’t speak Thai. Just be prepared to be able to flag one down, as there are no established bus stops. Buses operate from around 7 am to 6 pm, and are very affordable.

Motorbike – If you’re brave enough, you may just choose to rent a motorbike. 50-cc Hondas and big bikes are the most common type, and are very cheap. However, you need to know that many drivers operate with complete disregard for the laws and others on the road. Not only that, but if it’s a wet season, roads can become very slippery and difficult to navigate.

Motorbike Taxis – If you are going to hop on a motorbike, you may be better off with a local driving it for you. They are familiar with the way other locals drive, the weather conditions, and so on. This makes it much safer and more reliable. You can find them at moto taxi stands, usually with the drivers wearing red or green vests.

Where to Stay

Phuket may be an island, but it’s one of the more lively islands in Thailand. However, whether you’re going to party or to vacation as a family, there’s something for everyone. Each beach has a different vibe to it!

Phuket Town – If you’re going for the sightseeing and absorbing the culture more than anything, just stay here. You’ll be able to access some of the most popular attractions like the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong Temple, and elephant sanctuary. Not only that, but it’s easy to walk to hotels, temples, markets, and restaurants.

Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon – If your main priority is seeing the amazing beaches, then stay in any of these areas. Patong is one of the main beaches, but is usually very overcrowded while many others are uncomfortable and not quite as beautiful.

However, these 3 are all located inside a national park. They have beautiful white sands, gorgeous views, and have a more private feel to them. Nai Yang is notorious for being so close to the airport runway that you feel like you could almost reach out and touch the airplanes! Kata is another honorable mention, with some of the best swimming on the island.

Bang Tao – Bang Tao is perfect if you are a water sport kind of person. That could mean jet-skiing, going out on a speedboat, parasailing, etcetera. If you’re into receiving top-notch spa treatments, Bang Tao is also the way to go. If you’re feeling sore, you can’t skip receiving a massage here.

Patong – Patong is the center of nightlife and all the hustle-and-bustle of Phuket. You’ll find clubs bumping with loud music, all kinds of “entertainment complexes”, and extravagant shows. If you’re coming with the entire family, you may want to steer clear of staying in this area, though.

Kata Yai, Kata Noi – Are you a serious foodie? Then you should be staying in either of these areas. You’ll find everything from world-class bistros to makeshift stalls at the beach serving up delicious dishes. Whatever you’re looking for as far as food goes, you’ll find it here.

Restaurants and Eating Out

As we just mentioned, Phuket has a variety of tasty food options and there really is something for everyone. With that being said, we recommend trying both formal restaurants and food stalls for best results.

One Chun Café and Restaurant – Located in Old Town, this restaurant is consistently rated as one of the best on the island. With a wide variety of dishes (try the crab yellow curry), it has a very vintage feel with brick walls and all kinds of old clocks and TV sets!

Raya – Okay, so this is from the same owners as One Chun, but it just can’t be left out! Known for their classic local dishes like moo hong or slow-cooked pork belly stew, they really take their time in making sure each dish is served to perfection. It’s located right around the corner from One Chun, too!

Ko Ang Seafood – This place has been around a long time, and is known for being one of the best seafood spots in Old Town. You’ll find everything from popular dishes to exotic options like red ant eggs or horseshoe crab.

Lock Tien Food Court – If you go to Phuket, you have to make a visit to Lock Tien. It’s been serving up delicious food for over 50 years to locals and tourists, alike. Located on the corner of Dibuk and Yoawarat, you can try a delicious traditional dinner like por pia, or a cool dessert like oh aew. O-aew is a Thai shaved ice dessert topped with many ingredients like red bean, grass jelly, and of course o-aew: a type of jelly made with banana and herbs.

Kwong Shop Seafood – Here’s another prime seafood spot, and if you’re in Kata Beach, we highly recommend stopping by. Crab curry, hot pot, steamed squid, entire fish – they have it all and it’s super cheap for the quality and quantity received.

Sugar & Spice – This place melds western dishes with Thai favorites like pad Thai, pineapple rice, and som tam. It’s not all that exciting, but it’s a good option if you or another in your group isn’t that adventurous with food.

Nightlife and Entertainment

• Soi Bangla Road – This place goes crazy after the sun sets! You’ll find all kinds of lavish clubs to sophisticated lounges and everything in-between.
• Wassa Homemade – Located right on the coast, this is a wonderful date night spot if you’re looking for chill music, great conversation, and excellent cocktails. The views are unbeatable, and the service is fantastic.
• Seductino Nightclub – This trendy spot is a massive club, with famous DJs every night.
• Simon Cabaret – One of the most popular places in Phuket, it has great digital sound and visual effects.
• Siam Niramit – This is undoubtedly one of the most unique shows on the island, and has an almost Vegas-esque feel to it. If you’re bringing the whole family along, this is one of the top recommendations. Complete with over 100 performers, glamorous costumes, and elaborate sets, there’s never a dull moment.
• Boat Bar – This is a fun place with friendly staff, cool decorations, great music, cabaret some nights, and more.
• Kee Sky Lounge – This rooftop bar is just steps away from Bangla Walking Street. The rooftop is designed to look like a cruise ship deck, and is always fun with great cocktails and views of the Andaman Sea.
• Kudo Beach Club – Okay, so this club does open at 10 am, but it goes until midnight so you always have a party to go to!

Generally speaking, Phuket is quite warm throughout the entire year. Temperatures range from around 77 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit, and seasons are pretty much just divided into the “rainy season” and “dry season”. These periods depend on the tropical monsoon.

Dry season starts in December, lasting until around March. You’ll see clear skies, calm waters, and light breezes with temperatures in the high 70s, typically. As you can imagine, this attracts a lot of tourists and is known as the high season.

Rainy season starts in June and lasts until October. This is when the monsoon comes in, with intense winds, lots of rain, with hot and humid weather. It’s not quite as pleasant, considering many times you won’t be able to be out on the water. Going to the beach may result in sand blowing all over, and raining you out.

Attractions

Kata Noi Beach – Phuket has a ton of great beaches, but Kata Noi remains one of our favorites. It’s small in size but huge in beauty. Take a walk along the pristine sand while just enjoying the view or taking a swim in the water.

Chalong Bay Rum Distillery – If you’re a rum fan, you’ll love learning about how it is produced. Not to mention, after the tour you get to participate in a cocktail workshop and bar, where you’ll learn how to make various cocktails that include the house rum.

Big Buddha – This is an absolutely massive marble Buddha statue, at almost 150 feet tall! While the Buddha alone is a great motive for heading there, you also get some of the best panoramic views of the island from the top of the hill.

Nai Harn Beach – This is one of the most popular beaches, with soft white sand and crystal-clear blue water. There are many delicious restaurants nearby, so we recommend grabbing a bite to eat and then coming to sit under the shade of a large tree on the beach.

Karon Viewpoint – Right next to Kata Noi is Karon Viewpoint, which offers some of the best lookout points on the whole island.

Phuket Town Weekend Night Market – The locals call it “Maka Market”, and is the place to be at night on the weekends! It’s crowded with tourists and locals, yes, but there are so many delicious foods and fun items to purchase and look at here.

Wat Chalong and Phuket Temples – Wat Chalong is one of the most important temples in Phuket, with incredible intricacy and a fascinating history. It’s gorgeous from a distance, but head closer and you’ll see the innumerable pieces of glittering glass.

Bangla Road – It’s definitely unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, so prepare yourself for that! But if you are ready for adventure and have a sense of humor, you’ll be just fine.

Phang Nga Bay – If you have ever seen the James Bond movie, The Man With The Golden Gun you will recognize it. The “ James Bond Islands ” are a popular tourist attraction.

• Don’t drink the tap water. Just drink bottled water, and make sure that the bottle is sealed. Ice is made with clean water, and you don’t have to worry about it.
• Bring mosquito repellent or purchase some right when you arrive. Dengue and malaria aren’t that common, but it’s still annoying to be itching the entire time.
• When at temples, you need to be respectful. Cover your shoulders and legs at least to the knee. Remove shoes and hat before entering any temple.
• Be respectful of any image of Buddha. Buying statues and/or getting Buddhist tattoos if you aren’t Buddhist is not only considered very disrespectful, but in some cases, even illegal!
• Public criticism of Thai royalty is illegal, and if the national anthem is played in public or even before a movie in the theater, you should stand.

Where Is Phi Phi Island?

The Phi Phi islands (pronounced ‘Pee-Pee’) are located in the Andaman Sea of Thailand, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Phuket, and about the same distance from Krabi.

There are six islands in total, with the two main islands being Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don, and they’re all considered part of the Krabi province of Thailand.

The only inhabited island is Phi Phi Don, which has hotels, restaurants, and everything else you might want for a short stay.

How To Get To Phi Phi Island

The only way to reach the Phi Phi islands is by boat from Phuket or Krabi, and you can use either a ferry or a speedboat to get there.

There’s no airport in Koh Phi Phi, so the closest place to fly is the international airport in Phuket (HKT) or the one in Krabi (KBV). Both of these have cheap flights from Bangkok. You can shop for flights to Thailand on Skyscanner.

There are a bunch of boat companies making the trip to Phi Phi daily from either Phuket or Krabi, and they usually include hotel pickup and drop-off. You can also do the day trip from Koh Lanta, or as far away as Khao Lak Thailand.

The slow ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi Don takes about 2 hours, while the fast ferry (speedboat) takes half as long. If you’re starting from Krabi instead of Phuket, the boat travel times to Phi Phi are about 30 minutes shorter.

Keep in mind these are just transfers to the main island of Phi Phi Don. Once you arrive, you’ll need to arrange a longtail boat trip if you want to go touring Phi Phi Leh and the rest of the islands. You can arrange this on the spot at Ton Sai Beach in Phi Phi Don, and it’s usually pretty easy.

The other option is booking a day tour to Phi Phi by speedboat with a Phuket or Krabi-based tour company. There are shared or private tours, and they visit most of the main sights in one full day. This can be a great option if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the hassle.

Visiting Phi Phi Island – Tourist Fees

There are two tourist fees you have to pay when you arrive in the Phi Phi islands.

At Phi Phi Don island, there’s a cash fee of 20 baht per person, which is paid when you first land at the harbor. They collect this from everyone, and it helps pay for daily rubbish removal from the islands. This fee is one time only (not a daily fee).

At the national park areas, there’s a cash fee of 200 baht per person (~$6 USD), which is collected when you disembark at either Maya Bay or Bamboo Island (Koh Phai). This fee is charged every day you visit either of these two locations.

Some Phi Phi tours may already include these fees in the price, but usually you pay them separately in cash when you get off the boat.

There are no cars or motorbike rentals in the Phi Phi islands, and they’re not needed at all — if you’re staying on Phi Phi Don island, the whole town is small enough to be easily walkable on foot. Bicycles can also be rented.

You can hire a longtail boat in Phi Phi Don to take you to nearby islands like Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island. This can be booked online or else you can charter it in person at the Tonsai harbor after you arrive on Phi Phi Don.

The longtails are smaller boats, but they have room for up to 8 passengers, so you can share a boat with friends or other travelers to make it more cost effective.

Another option is kayaking at Ko Phi Phi Don. This is cheaper than a boat rental, and you can use kayaks to reach some of the hidden beaches on Phi Phi Don, like Nui Bay and Monkey Beach.

Best Things To Do In Phi Phi Island Thailand

The white sand beach at Maya Bay is one of the most famous and photogenic places in Thailand, and it was the main thing responsible for bringing tourism to the Koh Phi Phi islands. In fact, it’s now one of the most famous beaches in the world!

The entire beach is surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. The water is clear turquoise with baby sharks swimming around, and the sand is white as snow. Everything about it looks perfect. Yep, this is paradise!

Of course, the beauty of Maya Bay has attracted the tourist hordes, just like any of the amazing places in the world, but if you time your visit right you can still enjoy the beach without too many people.

Maya Bay is located on Phi Phi Leh island, where it’s accessed by landing a boat at Loh Samay Bay (on the back side of the island), and then doing a short and easy shaded walk through the jungle to get to the beach. The walk is flat and takes about 5 minutes.

In the past, boats could go inside of Maya Bay and land directly on the beach, but they don’t do that anymore. The Thai government has spent the last several years working on conservation, so the only way to get to the beach now is to walk to it from the back side of the island.

I think this change was a good idea because it keeps the bay clear of boats, although I do miss those perfect postcard photos of Thai longtail boats sitting on the beach at Maya Bay.

Another thing you should know is that Maya Bay is frequently closed for conservation at least a couple months every year during the rainy season.

In 2022 and 2023, Maya Bay was closed to tourists for 2 months (August and September) during the low season, but it re-opened for business on October 1, 2023. The bay is now open for visitors again in 2024!

Maya Bay has a small shop with snacks and drinks, and there are restrooms by the path when you first disembark at Loh Sama Bay.

The main beach is about 250 meters long, and the end of the beach has a shallow cave that’s nice for photos.

If you want to escape the crowds, there are usually less people at the far end of the beach.

Most Koh Phi Phi tour packages give you 1 hour at Maya Bay, which is plenty of time to explore the beach, take pictures from every angle, and dip your feet in the water (swimming isn’t allowed at Maya Bay anymore).

I have to say the beach has been kept very clean, and we didn’t notice hardly any trash, even though as many as 5,000 tourists come to this beach sometimes in a single day! The park rangers have done a good job with cleanup.

Overall, Maya Bay is an amazing experience, and it’s one of our favorite beaches in the world!

• Pileh Lagoon

This surreal turquoise lagoon surrounded by giant rock walls is one of the best things to see on Phi Phi island in Thailand.

The lagoon is only accessible by boat. Most Koh Phi Phi tours include a stop here, and the smaller boats can float into the lagoon and circle it, giving you up-close views of the impressive limestone karsts.

It’s more amazing than it looks in photos, and we may have enjoyed this spot even more than Maya Bay!

• Phi Phi Viewpoint

The Phi Phi viewpoint is a short hike on the island of Phi Phi Don, with epic views of the town and most of the island, and Phi Phi Leh visible in the distance.

There are actually three different viewpoints at various levels on the hill, but viewpoints #2 and #3 are the ones you really want to see because they’re higher and have the best views of the island without being blocked by any trees.

Phi Phi viewpoint #2 has broad panoramic views of the island and the entire town, with a nice wooden platform and some flat rocks where you can take photos. This was probably our favorite spot.

Viewpoint #3 has even higher views because it’s located at the top of the hill and you’re basically sitting in a tree house, with picnic tables and a hammock.

It’s very quiet and I’m sure it would be a great spot for sunset.

Phi Phi viewpoint #2 can be reached in about 20 minutes of uphill walking (mostly on stairs) if you start from the town center of Phi Phi Don island, and then it’s another 10-15 minutes to walk from there to viewpoint #3.

There’s a small fee to get into viewpoints #1 and #2, and then another small fee if you go to viewpoint #3. In total, we paid 50 baht per person (~$1.50). All of the viewpoints are very worthwhile!

• Bamboo Island (Koh Phai)

This is a small flat island located northeast of Phi Phi Don, with less people and a nice sandy beach covering most of the island.

Lots of Phi Phi island tours include this place in the itinerary, but it never feels too crowded, and if you walk around the side of the island for awhile you may have it all to yourself.

Just like Maya Bay, Bamboo Island is considered part of the Koh Phi Phi national park, so you have to pay the park entrance fee to land on the island and walk around the beach.

The center of the island has some trees, including the bamboo shoots that give the island its name, so you can escape the sun for awhile when you’re not in the water.

Overall, Bamboo Island is a great place to swim and soak up sun without the crowds of Maya Bay!

• Monkey Bay

This is a fun little beach where you can see wild monkeys on Phi Phi Don island. There are dozens of monkeys (long-tailed macaques) living on the beach, and you can usually see baby monkeys too.

The monkeys are fun for pictures, but they can be aggressive if they’re provoked, so don’t try to tease them or take their food. They’ve also been known to steal people’s glasses and other small items, so keep a close eye on them!

It’s best to go to this beach at low tide, when more monkeys come down to the beach. At high tide, the beach is mostly underwater and the monkeys retreat to the rocks, where they can’t be seen as well.

• Monkey Beach

Not to be confused with Monkey Bay, this is a different spot on the other side of Phi Phi Don island. This one also has monkeys, but they’re not seen as often, and it’s a bigger beach with more room to walk around.

The main reason to come to Monkey Beach is for the stunning scenery. It’s a really nice beach with soft sand and a backdrop of jungle covered limestone mountains.

This is one of the most beautiful spots in Koh Phi Phi Thailand, and you can reach it by boat or kayak from Loh Dalum Beach. Just remember to keep an eye on the monkeys, because they can be sneaky.

This is a small hidden bay on Phi Phi Don island with a nice beach and towering limestone rocks.

It’s possible to reach Nui Bay by sea or by land. From Loh Dalum Beach, you can rent a kayak or a boat to go there, which is how people usually get there. Kayaking to the bay will take about 45 minutes with a leisurely pace.

Otherwise, it’s also possible to reach Nui Bay by hiking from the Phi Phi viewpoint. It takes about 1 hour, and you’ll want to bring plenty of water and mosquito spray just in case.

If you get to Nui Bay in the morning (around 8 AM), it’s quiet and you may have it all to yourself for awhile until the tour boats start arriving later in the morning!

Best Beaches In Phi Phi Thailand

There are a lot of beaches in the Phi Phi islands, but obviously the hands down winner for scenery is the one at Maya Bay.

Some other beaches with great sand and swimming are the ones at Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach, and Nui Bay. You can watch the sunset at Long Beach .

If you want a quiet beach with nearby hotels on Phi Phi Don, some great options are Long Beach , Loh Moo Dee Beach , and Loh Ba Kao Bay . All of these have nice white sand and hotels near the beach. The best one for sunsets is Long Beach.

What To Bring

Here are some packing suggestions for your trip to Koh Phi Phi Island Thailand.

Most of the items below can probably be found on Phi Phi Don in a pinch, but the quality of stuff you buy on the street won’t be guaranteed (personally, I’m not about to use a junky knockoff bag from a street vendor to protect my expensive camera gear).

It’s best to buy vetted products online!

• Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats around PP island. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
• Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
• Snorkeling Gear: Good for exploring the clear waters around Koh Phi Phi island. Snorkels and masks can be borrowed or rented from the boat companies too, but if you plan to stay on the island or do multiple tours then it’s better to bring your own gear.
• Water Shoes: These can come in handy sometimes while snorkeling in case you need to walk on rocks to get out of the water.
• Sunscreen: There is usually some shade in the speedboats and longtail boats, but you can still get roasted while swimming or walking on the beach, so you’ll want to bring a hat and sunscreen for the boat tours.
• Snacks & Drinks: You’ll want to pack some snacks and drinks in the boat when touring the islands. You can bring these from Phuket or Krabi, or there are plenty of cheap snack and drink stands in Ko Phi Phi Don near the port.

Can You Fly A Drone At The Phi Phi Islands?

Yes and no. Thailand is pretty relaxed about drones, and you can fly them in most of the islands, but they don’t allow you to fly them in the national parks.

That includes Ko Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island, which are patrolled by park rangers who will fine you if you’re caught flying a drone. They’re especially strict at Maya Bay, and the rangers there are watching all areas of the beach constantly.

However, if you’re discreet it’s still possible to fly from other locations. For example, you can park your boat at Pileh Lagoon or Viking Cave and launch the drone from there, and usually no one is likely to notice or care unless a park ranger boat happens to drive by and see you do it.

The drone restrictions don’t apply to Phi Phi Don island at all. You can fly drones anywhere on Phi Phi Don without a problem, although you’ll still want to be considerate and only fly in places where it won’t bother people, of course.

Other Tips For Phi Phi Island Thailand

• Credit Cards: Some places accept cards, but many do not. Most restaurants are cash only, although a few higher end restaurants accept cards. Use your card for big things like hotels and tours, and save your cash for smaller things like the amazing Thai street food.
• ATM: On Phi Phi Don island, there are ATMs all over town. We used Krungsri in several locations and never had any issues. The pull fee was like 220 baht and they let you withdraw large amounts of cash at a time.
• Cell Service: Phone reception is strong on Phi Phi Don, but you may lose signal while touring around Phi Phi Leh island (including Maya Bay) because of the steep mountains that cover the island.
• WiFi: The internet situation is improving, and a fair number of hotels and restaurants in Phi Phi Don have good WiFi now. The internet quality is not as good as Phuket, but it’s generally good enough for emails, browsing, and streaming.
• Electricity: The power is almost always on. During the rainy season we lost power a few times after storms, but it came back quickly.

• Convenience Stores: There are plenty of small mini marts on Phi Phi Don where you can buy cheap snacks, drinks, toiletries, sunscreen, and other such things. Just remember their selection is smaller than what you’ll find shopping in Phuket.
• Hygiene: We ate tons of the cheapest Thai street food and never had any stomach issues, but remember not to drink the tap water. Only use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth.
• Language: Just like in Phuket, the locals in the Koh Phi Phi islands don’t speak a lot of English, but it’s easy enough to communicate about hotels, restaurants, tours, etc.
• Religion: Most of the locals in Phi Phi Don are Muslim (more than 80 percent). One of the funny side effects of this is that there are lots of cats on the island, but no dogs. We enjoyed the cats. There’s only one mosque on Phi Phi island, and it’s not noisy, so you won’t be kept awake at night.
• Mosquitoes: We didn’t see any mosquitoes in the Ko Phi Phi islands except for a few at Monkey Bay. There have been some cases of Dengue Fever here, but it’s not really something to stress about. You can buy bug repellent in Phuket, Krabi, or Phi Phi Don if you need it. Malaria isn’t present here.

Best Restaurants In Phi Phi Don

Even though Phi Phi Don is a small island, there are lots of great restaurants to choose from, with different kinds of cuisine including Thai, European, and Asian food.

Here are just a few of our top restaurant recommendations:

• ACQUA : This is probably the single nicest restaurant in Phi Phi Don, although it’s a little on the pricey side. They have a good range of Thai and European dishes, with indoor and outdoor seating.
• Mango Garden : This air-conditioned cafe is one of the first places we ate in Phi Phi island. They have a whole menu dedicated to mango sticky rice. Great for breakfast or a snack while waiting for the ferry! They also have free WiFi and plenty of power outlets.
• JaJa Cafe & Spice : Awesome pancakes and acai fruit smoothie bowls!
• Anna’s Restaurant : European and Thai food in PP island with a good selection and reasonable prices. Try the pineapple fried rice.
• 23° Roasters Cafe : A relatively new cafe with great cakes and pastries. Indoor seating and super fast WiFi.
• Papaya Restaurant : Indian and Thai food outside of the main street on PP island.
• Garlic 1992 : Good Thai food in a humble setting. As you can tell by the name, they’ve been in business since 1992.

Again, this is far from a complete list of every good restaurant in Phi Phi Don island. With a bit of exploring, you’re sure to find some other gems.

Don’t forget about the yum Thai street food stalls and small family owned restaurants, such as Only Noodles . These places are super cheap and the food is usually amazing. In fact, we ate at these places for almost all of our meals in Phi Phi island!

Last, but not least, if you’re craving western food then there’s even a McDonald’s and Burger King when you first step off the boat at Ton Sai beach.

Is Koh Phi Phi Safe?

Yes, Phi Phi island in Thailand is generally a very safe place to stay.

We’ve spent weeks staying in Phi Phi Don and exploring the whole town, and never felt unsafe. Just take normal precautions and you shouldn’t have any issues with crime.

If anything, we actually found the locals more friendly in Phi Phi than in Phuket or Krabi.

Best Time To Visit Phi Phi

The best time to visit the Phi Phi islands in Thailand depends on what you’re looking for.

The weather in the Andaman Sea of Thailand (including Phi Phi) is best from November to April, when it’s more dry and sunny, and the sea conditions are better for boat tours. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so it’s more crowded and hotels in Phi Phi Don are more likely to be fully booked.

The weather is not as good from May to October. There are more rainy days, and there are frequent storms in the evenings. However, there are less tourists in these months and it’s still possible to have a great trip if your time is a bit more flexible.

If you visit Phi Phi in the rainy season, it’s good to have a few extra days to spare in case there’s some junky weather leading to the boats being canceled for a day or two.

Are The Phi Phi Islands Worth It?

Yes, the Phi Phi islands are absolutely worth a visit! The scenery is amazing and the prices for everything are very affordable.

I’d say it’s the single best place to go in Thailand, and also one of the best places in Southeast Asia. Sure, the crowds are annoying, but sights like Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon have very few equals on Earth.  

Phi Phi Or James Bond Island: Which Is Better?

So which is better, Phi Phi or James Bond Island ? That’s an important question.

They’re both great, but I have to say Phi Phi island is better. No offense to James Bond island , but Phi Phi has the best scenery above and below the ocean, with clear blue water and lots of fish and coral to see while snorkeling or scuba diving.

There’s also more to see and do in Phi Phi overall. Even if you don’t care about snorkeling, it’s hard to beat Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, and the other epic sights in the Phi Phi islands. They are truly world class.

Don’t get me wrong, Phang Nga Bay is still amazing and you should definitely see James Bond island if you’re able. Try to see both Phi Phi and James Bond if you have time! Unfortunately you can’t see them both in one day since they’re located in opposite directions from Phuket (south vs north), but it’s possible to see both places in two days!

How Long To Stay

You can see the highlights of the Koh Phi Phi islands in one full day tour, including Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Bamboo Island, and more. This is true even if you’re starting from Phuket or Krabi, as opposed to staying on Phi Phi Don.

However, staying a few days in the Phi Phi islands will give you more time to enjoy the scenery and see some extra things like the Phi Phi viewpoint, or the many hidden beaches on Phi Phi Don. It also gives you a buffer in case of junky weather.

We really enjoyed all of our days spent in Koh Phi Phi, and if you have enough time to spare then I think staying a few days is better than doing a one day trip from Phuket or Krabi.

3-Day Itinerary For Phi Phi Island Thailand

Here’s what a sample itinerary for the Phi Phi islands could look like, assuming you spend 3 days staying on Phi Phi Don and touring all of the islands:

• Day 1: Phi Phi Don . Arrive in the Phi Phi islands from Phuket or Krabi. Check in to your hotel and unpack your things. Hike to the Phi Phi viewpoint and enjoy the scenery for awhile, and then head over to Loh Dalum Beach, where you can take a boat or kayak to Nui Bay and Monkey Beach.
• Day 2: Phi Phi Leh . Take a longtail boat over to Phi Phi Leh island. Tour the famous beach at Maya Bay, and then go see Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave. If you have time, stop and visit Monkey Bay on your way back to town.
• Day 3: Misc . Take a boat to Bamboo Island and spend a couple hours swimming and soaking up sun. Head back to Phi Phi Don and explore the town and miscellaneous beaches before going back to Phuket or Krabi.

Hi there. It depends what you’re hoping to do in the Phi Phi islands. If you’re mainly wanting a private boat trip where you can avoid the worst crowds at Maya Bay etc, I would actually recommend staying a couple nights in Phi Phi Don if possible, and then hiring a boat from there. It’s easy to charter a boat in Phi Phi, and this will allow you to get an early start for sightseeing all around the islands before the crowds of day trippers come from Phuket. Phi Phi has luxury hotels too like Saii and Zeavola Resort . Otherwise, if you’re just wanting to do a day trip to Phi Phi and a convenient area to stay in Phuket nearby, then anywhere in south Phuket would work for that. Two good options in the southern part of the island are Sinae Phuket or Royal Phuket City Hotel .

• Long Beach : Long Beach is a quieter and more relaxed beach that’s about a 10-15 minute walk or boat ride from Tonsai Village. Here, you’ll find resorts and bungalows that offer a calmer ambiance and panoramic views.
• Laem Tong Beach : This beach is located at the northern tip of Phi Phi Don. It’s an ideal choice if you’re looking for a serene and relaxed environment. Here, you’ll also find high-end resorts offering luxury amenities.

• Fresh Seafood Cuisine : As Phi Phi is an island, you’ll find many options for fresh seafood at restaurants along the coast. Some places even let you choose your own seafood and then prepare it to your liking.

If we had to narrow down to just 10 activities on the Phi Phi Islands, they would likely be these:

About the Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi Islands are the jewel of the Andaman Sea.

Scattered across the Gulf of Thailand, it’s made up of two main islands; Koh Phi Phi Leh and Koh Phi Phi Don, with other smaller islands dotted around, mostly uninhabited.

Koh Phi Phi Don is the largest island, and the only one with a small town on it. It has a very chill laid-back vibe, and it’s one of the main backpacker destinations for all travellers to Thailand. 

Not far from Koh Phi Phi Don, you will find Koh Phi Phi Leh, a beautiful island that’s long enticed travellers, thanks to its gorgeous coral reefs, imposing limestone cliffs and the famous Maya Bay.

Even though they’re technically part of Krabi, most people visit Phi Phi as part of their  Phuket itinerary , as it’s fairly close.

Many travellers visit Phi Phi on a day trip, and if that’s your plan too, you’ve come to the right place!

How to get to Phi Phi Island

First of all, it’s not really possible to do the Phi Phi day trip independently. The only real way to do it is to hop on a tour, either from Phuket or Krabi, depending on where you’re staying.

How to get to Phi Phi Island from Phuket

The Phi Phi Island day tour from Phuket is mostly done by speedboat.

You’ll be picked up from your hotel and taken across the sea to various different sights around the Phi Phi Islands. Tours may include a buffet lunch, mask and snorkel, and the national park fee.

Technically speaking, from Phuket, there are also public ferries, which could make a Phi Phi island day tour (sort of) possible without joining a tour.

However, the ferry takes around two hours, but I would say that the ferry times are a little bit inconvenient if you’re just going for the day.

You can check ferry times here . When I visited Phi Phi, the ferries were leaving Phuket around 10AM, arriving in Phi Phi around 12PM. The latest ferry back from Koh Phi Phi Don was then around 3PM.

That doesn’t give you much time to explore these beautiful islands. It’s better to join a tour like this one , which has better timings, leaving earlier in the morning and coming back later in the afternoon.

How to get to Phi Phi Island from Krabi

Getting to the Phi Phi Islands from Krabi is the same as from Phuket. You can either take the ferry (which I don’t recommend for a day trip), or join a speedboat tour.

The ferries from Krabi take around 90 minutes to reach the Phi Phi islands along the 40-kilometre crossing. 

Similarly to the ferries from Phuket, the timings aren’t convenient for a day trip, as they don’t leave you with much free time there.

Instead, check out one of these speedboat tours. These tours are one of the most popular ways to see the islands, ticking off all the main sights on a single full-day tour.  

It involves being up bright and early at your accommodation in Krabi, before being taken to Railay Beach . From there you’ll hop on the speedboat and be whisked around the islands.

This sort of trip includes an English-speaking guide, lunch, and snorkel equipment.

Note that many tours from Krabi don’t include the entrance fee to the national park (400 THB), which must be paid at the entrance to the park in Koh Phi Phi Leh.

What does a Phi Phi Island day tour include?

Regardless of whether Phi Phi island tour sets off from Krabi or Phuket, they tend to include many similarities.

From the mode of transport (either a longtail boat or a speedboat) to the sights you’ll see along the way, it will basically be the same tour.

Therefore, don’t let the starting point of your day trip influence your Thailand itinerary , as you will visit all of the beautiful must-see sights of Phi Phi both if you visit from Krabi or from Phuket.

There are some differences however, as a Phi Phi island day trip cost can vary massively depending on the package. If you choose a private boat over a group tour, small group versus large tour, any extra stops and so on.

Mostly though, you’ll be whisked away to the following big-hitter destinations in this beautiful archipelago.

Visit Maya Bay

Pretty much every single Koh Phi Phi day trip will include a visit to Maya Bay . This iconic spot was made famous as a filming location in The Beach , the 2000 travel movie starring Leonardo diCaprio.

With a beach backed by soaring cliffs, you can easily see why the hidden cove has become fairly busy today. Maya Bay was actually closed for four years, to allow it to recover from the effects of over tourism.

Today, Maya Bay is open once again, but boats can no longer dock inside it and you’re not allowed to swim in the water. You can only get in up to knee-length water for pictures.

However, don’t let that deter you, as it’s still a truly stunning spot. Plus, you’ll be able to snorkel and swim in other stops of your Phi Phi Islands day trip.

The beach itself is a 100-metre-long stretch of white sandy beach, which is an idyllic place to lounge around for a while soaking up the surroundings.

Snorkel in Phi Leh Lagoon  

After Maya Bay, most tours will head over to another of the area’s beautiful lagoons; Phi Leh Lagoon, also located on Koh Phi Phi Ley.

Cutting into the shape of the island on its eastern side, this 600-metre-long bay is an integral part of tours in the area and, well, it’s not hard to see why: it’s a stunner.

The lagoon is centred in front of a 100-metre-high limestone cliffs, while the water itself is emerald and translucent.

This makes for excellent conditions for snorkelling (it’s one of the best snorkelling and scuba diving spots in Thailand after all!), which is exactly what people do when the tour boats rock up here.

Explore Viking Cave

Viking Cave is around half an hour on the boat from Phi Leh Lagoon. It’s most famous as a collection point for the natural bounty that are swallow’s nests — the main ingredient for Chinese delicacy bird’s nest soup.

You’re not allowed up in the cave where the locals climb up to collect the nests, but you can see them ascending up the cliffs while you’re floating around in the boat below; the tour boat usually makes sure to slow down so you can glimpse the spectacle.

Interestingly the cave doesn’t get its name from Vikings, but instead from some 400-year-old graffiti of Chinese fishing junk.

See the monkeys at Monkey Beach

As the name suggests, this large beach is home to monkeys. You will se monkeys in the trees that line the beach, and they often come down to the sand as they know tourists often have food on them.

Other than the monkeys, which can be a little bit pesky if you’re not careful, it’s a beautiful spot framed by turquoise seas and verdant cliffs, with soft, silky sand to dig your toes into.

Here you can relax for a while, see the monkeys in this unique setting and go for a swim in the crystal clear waters of Monkey Bay. 

Don’t leave your bags unattended, as the monkeys will open them to see if you have food inside!

Chill at Bamboo Island

Also called Koh Pai, Bamboo Island sits to the northeast of the Phi Phi archipelago.

It’s a tiny island (only 700 metres long), but size doesn’t matter: this heart-shaped island is absolutely beautiful, featuring a wide beach that slopes gently into the sparkling sea.  

There’s not much here, only a coral reef out to sea and a small beach eatery, but who cares? It’s gorgeous.

Snorkelling is great here since the water is nice, warm and perfectly crystal clear (and also because of the coral, obviously).

Kayak to hidden coves and beaches

This isn’t an option on all Phi Phi island tours, but sometimes the bigger boats will bring kayaks with them.

This means you’ll get to kayak to little secret coves and hidden beaches when the boat drops anchor in one of more of the stunning locations I listed above.

Like many, this is a Phi Phi island tour by speedboat and it will see you zipping across the sea on an adventure around the archipelago.

From Phi Phi: Full-Day Sunset Long Tail Boat Tour

This small group tour of the Phi Phi islands is a great option for anybody who feels like staying in the Phi Phi Islands overnight.

Unlike most tours, it’s done via a traditional longtail boat instead of a speedboat, and it makes eight stops along the way. You’ll also get to see the sunset on this tour, which is another bonus.

However it starts in Koh Phi Phi Don, not from the bigger Phuket or Maya Bay harbours. As such, it’s only suited for those who plan to take the ferry to Phi Phi, stay overnight and then join a boat tour the next day.

From Phuket Or Khao Lak: Phi Phi Islands Early Bird Tour

This early bird tour is a great option if you want to avoid the crowds in Maya Beach, possibly making it the best Phi Phi Island tour for anybody who wants to see pristine beaches without the other tourists.

You also get to climb to an amazing viewpoint on Phi Phi Don — and that’s before you’ve even stopped for breakfast!

Krabi: Phi Phi Sunrise & 4 Islands by Speedboat with Lunch

Also leaving early in the day to help you avoid crowds, this tour is an interesting option since it goes from Krabi and also includes the Krabi four islands tour.

That’s what makes it a bit different from the other Phi Phi tours, mainly because it includes some islands that you wouldn’t otherwise see on the main tours.

There’s also the bonus of a pretty decent Thai buffet at a hotel restaurant for lunch.

Is a Phi Phi island day trip worth it?

Yes and no… While it’s a beautiful archipelago — I mean, obviously it is — with some iconic and pretty unique sights like Maya Bay, it is also super busy and overly touristy.

There are other beautiful islands to visit in Thailand. Many, many more in fact (for example Koh Lipe , the Surin Islands or Similan Islands ) that are far less touristy than Phi Phi which you could visit.

But if you’re dead set on visiting Phi Phi island (I don’t blame you, it was a must on my travel bucket list too), I would recommend going there via ferry and trying to spend at least one night there.

This means you’ll be able to enjoy the chill town and see it after the daytrippers leave, and then for something special maybe go to Maya Bay for a super early bird tour and see it without the huge crowds.

I visited the Phi Phi Islands three times, once on a private boat tour from Krabi, and twice staying overnight. The two times I stayed overnight were much more enjoyable. If you do opt for a day trip, try a private tour if you can.

The Phi Phi Islands are very touristy, but there’s no denying they’re beautiful and definitely worth visiting. Just make sure you spend at least a night there, and see everything they have to offer, instead of just visiting on a day trip.

Where to stay for your Phi Phi day trip

For a Phi Phi Island day trip, you can either stay in Krabi or Phuket. Personally, I much preferred Krabi as it’s more laid-back than Phuket, and it’s also shorter boat trip to the Phi Phi archipelago.

Budget: Railay Viewpoint Resort   – This budget option is great for those who want spacious rooms and a pool with view for an affordable price. It’s tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main road of Railay Beach.

I didn’t personally love Phuket, but it’s one of the most popular beach destinations in Thailand for a reason.

If you’re planning lots of day trips in the Gulf of Thailand, you should stay on the Eastern side of Phuket, so you don’t have to drive as much within Phuket to get to the harbour and boat trips.

In Koh Phi Phi Don

I know this article is about doing a day trip to Phi Phi, but as I already said, I really think you should spend at least one night there. If you choose to do so, here are some great places to stay in Phi Phi Don for every budget.

Budget:  Sweet Dee Hostel   – Phi Phi is a bit of a party destination, so if that’s what you’re looking for, a hostel like this is a great place to be. They only offer dorms with lockers, and are centrally located in Phi Phi.

Mid-range: Papaya Phi Phi Resort  – This is where I stayed on my second trip to the Phi Phi Islands. It’s not particularly fancy, but has a lovely view, and all the rooms have small balconies where you will be served breakfast in the morning.

Luxury: Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort   – I stayed here on my first trip to Phi Phi and can honestly say it’s great. It’s a 10-minute walk from the harbour, in a quieter part of the island, with a great pool and view.

My ultimate guide to Island hopping Thailand in the rainy season

Pin it!I spent a little over 2 weeks visiting Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan and was struck down by how beautiful and unique they each were. If you’ve been following Escapes Etc for a while you will know that when I last visited Thailand I didn’t even give the islands a chance. I dismissed them as being full of party-goers which just isn’t my scene. Now I’ve visited however, I couldn’t have been more wrong, especially in the low season. So if you’re thinking about visiting the Thai islands, I’ve put together this guide to exploring the islands and why off-peak travel is the way to go.

Oh, by the way, it didn’t even rain that much!

Where are these islands?

The 4 islands covered in this guide are located on the Southwest of Thailand (Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta) and the Southeast in the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui and Koh Phangan). Whilst being opposite sides of the country, they are easy to travel between.

When is the rainy season in Thailand?

There’s not a clearcut answer to when the rainy season hits Thailand as it varies throughout the country. Generally speaking, it runs from June to October in the southwest where Krabi, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta are, but it hits later (more around October to December) in the Gulf of Thailand where Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are.

I know I can only honestly comment on my own personal experience but there were very few days where it really poured down, and when it did, it usually wasn’t for the whole day. I didn’t find myself not being able to do the things I wanted to do and the islands were as much of a paradise as I had imagined them to be. It certainly wasn’t all grey skies and torrential rain.

The pros of visiting Thailand in the rainy season

• It’s blissfully quiet – I don’t mean it’s completely empty but from talking to people who live there, it’s a lot quieter than the high season. For Tom and I, this is our idea of perfect!
• Things are generally cheaper – It’s a well-known fact that low season = lower prices which is amazing if you’re travelling on a budget or looking for an amazing bargain. It’s the perfect time to indulge in somewhere extra special and have a luxe for less experience if you want a real treat.
• Businesses seem to be a little more flexible – This statement really does come from personal experience but there were a couple of occasions during our trip where circumstances changed and we contacted our accommodation asking for a change of dates and there was never a problem. I’m not trying to say that there would have definitely been a problem with things like this if it were the dry season, but I think it helped that it was quieter and businesses are not as booked out. However, don’t take this as a definite!

And the cons…

• Not everything is open in the low season – Some of the attractions on the islands don’t run during the rainy season and a lot of businesses use this quieter part of the year to do maintenance work. If there’s something in particular that you really want to do whilst you’re visiting, be sure to make sure it’s open beforehand to avoid disappointment.
• Things might be too quiet sometimes – Whilst I loved experiencing these islands at this time of year, there were a couple of times when it did feel a little too quiet. If you’re a solo traveller I would keep this in mind if you really like social atmospheres in hostels and bars.

A couple of other things to know before you go

When you arrive on each of these 4 islands, you will be required to pay a small ‘clean up fee’ to help clean up the island. be sure to have a small bit of cash to hand to pay when you get off the ferry. Also, if you’re looking to go to a full moon party over on Koh Phangan, I would recommend planning your trip around these dates and to book your accommodation in advance, even in the low season.

Koh Phi Phi has arguably been made famous by the Leo DiCaprio film, the beach, and each year thousands of tourists visit the island. It really is a stunning place and you will have probably see places that you will recognise from photos. Tom and I visited when the Thai Full Moon party was going on over on Koh Phangan so it was a lot quieter on Phi Phi than usual. So if you’re looking for a more peaceful time in Koh Phi Phi, this is the time to visit!

It’s also worth noting that Maya Bay (the famous beach from ‘The Beach’ is closed indefinitely. There’s sadly been a lot of damage to the beach and reef from the thousands of tourists who visited it every day for many years that the authorities have closed it to give the environment time to recover.

How to get to Koh Phi Phi from Krabi

Catch the ferry from Krabi to Tonsai Pier on Koh Phi Phi. The journey takes about 1.5 hours and our tickets included a pick up from our hotel in Ao Nang to the ferry port in Krabi. The island you will be visiting is Koh Phi Phi Don.

Where to stay in Koh Phi Phi

The main backpacker area in Koh Phi Phi is called Tonsai Village and is small, so if you’re looking to base yourself there, you really can’t go to wrong. Search for places near Tonsai Pier and you’ll be sure to be right in the centre of everything. I opted to stay a street or 2 away from the bars and restaurants in a cheap and cheerful guesthouse called Harmony House . The room was big, clean had air con and the wifi was decent. If you’re travelling on a budget but still want comfort and a private room then I’d recommend here.

The best things to do in Koh Phi Phi

• Take a half day sunset boat tour around the islands – You will see signs for both the half day and full day tours all over the main area of the island and I would definitely recommend going one. I opted for a sunset half day tour which saw us visit Monkey Beach, Emerald Lagoon, Viking Cave, Shark Bay and finished off with a swim in the dark to see the plankton sparkling underwater. We also stopped off at a couple of snorkelling spots on the way and lunch was included too. The tour goes out on the famous longtail boats which are great fun too.
• Take a walk up to the viewpoint – You might have seen photos of this famous viewpoint and I can promise you it’s well worth the hike! I would recommend avoiding the midday heat for this as it involves quite a lot of stairs and little shade. There are actually 3 viewpoints to soak in the sights, along with a rather strange garden. There is a small entrance fee to visit the 1st and 2nd viewpoints and then another small fee to visit the 3rd. The 3rd viewpoint is a bit out of the way and you’ll need to walk along a dirt track to find it.
• Relax on the beach –  Koh Phi Phi has a number of beautiful beaches to relax on and take a swim. Loh Dalum Bay is a popular beach located just the other side to Tonsai Village. It has beautiful white sand and warm clear water making it a great place to chill out. It also has a netted area dedicated for swimming where boats can’t enter and plenty of bars along it to grab a drink or bite to eat.
• Hit the shops  – All around Tonsai Village you will find loads of markets and shops selling everything from clothes to bags to electronics. If you’re looking for a souvenir or something in particular, be sure to take a look around.
• Party – Yes, Koh Phi Phi is a party island so it’s not surprising that there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. There’s a bit of everything here from the rowdy Irish bar to live music to small bar stalls on the street. If you’re looking to party then you’ll be fine here!

This sleepy little island feels a mile away from the bright lights and parties of Koh Phi Phi. It’s a great island to visit if you want to relax and also to explore an island that is a bit less touristy. Because it is a lot less popular at the moment, quite a few businesses are shut during the rainy season but I personally didn’t find this to be an issue.

How to get to Koh Lanta from Koh Phi Phi

Catch the one hour ferry from Tonsai Pier on Koh Phi Phi to Saladan Pier on Koh Lanta. The journey takes around 1 hour and cost us 350 Baht.

Where to stay in Koh Lanta

Luxury option

I was lucky enough to spend part of my time in Koh Lanta at one of the islands top resorts, the Crown Lanta. If you’re looking splash out on somewhere amazing to stay, this has to be the place! The resort is complete paradise and with a huge pool, private beach, cliff side bar and spa, it’s a true escape. You can read out my review from my stay here and check the rates here .

Budget option

If you’re on a budget then be sure to check out Toongyoong Long Beach . The owner is a really lovely guy who couldn’t help us enough with all our questions and the little bungalows are brand new and really lovely.

The best things to do in Koh Lanta

• Chill out on Long Beach – This beach is 4km long and has glorious white sand. It’s a nice spot to relax on or take a swim.
• Visit Lanta Old Town – This part of the island is a great place to spend a couple of hours. It’s such a pretty little area and reminds me a little bit of Penang. Some of the buildings have been built on stilts over the water and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. There were some places that were shut for the low season but I actually think it would be a nice area to stay when things are more open in the high season. There is a small temple to see there as well as the fisherman’s pier from which you get a great view of the nearby smaller islands.
• Volunteer your time at Animal Lanta Welfare – This fantastic charity takes in stray cats and dogs to help improve their lives and provide a safe space where they can be treated and looked after before hopefully being adopted. The focus a lot on trying to control the population of these animals on the island as they are often not de-sexed for cultural reasons but at the same time seen as a nuisance to many. There are a number of ways you can help out ranging from providing toys for he puppies or even spending a few weeks or months there volunteering. If you don’t have the time to commit to helping long-term, you can visit during the day between 8.30-11.00am and 3.00-5.00pm to have a tour around and to also take a dog for a walk.
• Visit the South of the island – This area is far more untouched than the area around Long Beach and is beautiful. The roads are lined with green trees and the beaches at the bottom are pristine.

Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is famous for it beautiful beautiful beaches and a great holiday destination if you’re looking for an amazing resort to escape to. It’s the second largest Thai island and does have it’s own airport if you wanted to fly into it. If not, keep reading to find out how to get there overland.

How to get from Koh Samui from Koh Lanta

One thing I didn’t initially realise is that Koh Lanta is actually super to the mainland. I bought a ticket that took me the whole way from Koh Lanta to Koh Samui and the journey pretty much took the whole day. I was picked up in a minibus and taken across the small stretch of water between Koh Lanta and the mainland via the Raja ferry. The minibus can go on it as well so there was no need to change buses. Once on the mainland, it took about 4 hours to drive across to Surat Thani on the west coast where the boats leave to get to Koh Samui. The ferry then took a whopping 2.5 hours which was a lot longer than I thought but it can be a bit tricky as there are multiple ferry ports on Koh Samui. My top tip here is to check which port your ferry is going to in relation to your accommodation. For me, the ferry arrived at the opposite side of the island to where I was staying so it was an additional cost to catch a taxi to my accommodation.

Where to stay in Koh Samui

Chaweng beach is the most popular area for travellers to stay in Koh Samui and it offers plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. Tom and I stayed at the Samui Hostel in a private room but they also have dorm rooms available if you prefer. The staff were lovely and the room we were in was huge. It’s another cheap and cheerful option for budget minded travellers.

The best things to do in Koh Samui

• Visit Chaweng Beach – The main town of Chaweng has sprung up around this beautiful beach and it’s well worth taking some time out to relax on it. It’s a pretty big beach and there are loads of bars lining it to really chill out.
• Join the buzz of Chaweng Walking Street – Ok, so it’s kind of laid out more like a courtyard than a street as such, but the Chaweng Walking Street is a great place to go to try local food and have a cocktail. There are 2 big areas full of restaurants to choose from and it gets pretty busy in the evenings. It has a really fun atmosphere and the food is great!
• Experience Thai culture – Just a few kilometres from Chaweng you’ll find the magnificent Big Buddha and the nearby Wat Plai Laem. The huge golden Buddha sits at the top of a flight of stairs and overlooks the beautiful turquoise sea surrounding it. Just another kilometre down the road you’ll find wat Plai Laem which is a temple complex and equally as stunning. I actually think this was one of my favourite temples I’ve seen from my time in Southeast Asia.
• Take a dip at Na Mueang Waterfall – If you’re looking to get away from the beach for a bit, be sure to head to this beautiful waterfall. There are 2 levels to Na Mueang which can both be reached on foot from a path through the forest. The water is blissfully refreshing on a hot sticky day!
• Visit the Grandmother and Grandfather rocks – Ok, so I do think this is a bit overrated after visiting here myself but the Grandmother and Grandfather rocks (aka the penis rock) does have some of the Thai culture embedded within it. If you’re going that way at some point, you might as well swing by.
• Relax at Crystal Bay – If you’re looking to escape the bustle of Chaweng, Crystal Bay is the place to go. This beautiful shallow area is made up of crystal clear water and is perfect for swimming and snorkelling. I had a hard time leaving this place!
• Visit the Fishermans Village market – I loved this place in Bophut in Koh Samui! Here you’ll find tonnes of more up-market bars and restaurants throughout the week as well as tonnes of markets to grab a bargain from. Every Friday they have the walking street which is an awesome market for souvenirs and also street food to get a tasty bite to eat for cheap.

I think it’s safe to say that this island is famed for its Thai Full moon parties, and half moon parties.. and even the black moon parties. Yes it is the party island but that doesn’t make up everything this beautiful island has to offer.

How to get from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan

There are 2 types of boats available to take you between these islands. There is the faster and more expensive catamaran which takes a short 30 minutes, or the slower and of course cheaper boat that takes an hour. I took the slow boat and it was absolutely fine. The boats arrive at Thong Sala pier on Koh Phangan.

Where to stay in Koh Phangan

There are 2 main backpacker areas to stay in Koh Phangan – Thong Sala which is the quieter area, or the Had Rin beach area where the full moon parties are held. We chose to stay in Thong Sala at the Patchara Boutique Hotel which is mostly made up of private rooms and even has a small pool. However, I wish I had actually stayed closer to Had Rin to be closer to the beach as there was no nice beach in Thong Sala to enjoy.

The best things to do in Koh Phangan

• Eat at the Thong Sala food market – Every night the food market comes alive with stalls selling local dishes as well as a couple of vegan-friendly and pizza places. I ended up having most of my food from here has it’s just such a great selection and nice and fresh.
• Relax on the famous Had Rin beach – This beach is known for hosting the full moon parties but aside from this, the beach is actually stunning. I was really surprised by how clean it was and the water is perfect for swimming in. There are plenty of bars along the beachfront if you fancy a drink too.
• Stop to see the viewpoint on the way to Had Rin – You’ll have to pull over on the side of the road, but the hills leading to Had Rin make for an awesome view over the coastline!
• Chill out at Koh Ma Beach – This beach is lined with resorts and is super nice. As with Had Rin, it’s great for swimming and relaxing. The beach here narrows before going off onto a spit of land making it a bit different from the other beaches on the island.

Koh Phi Phi is an archipelago located in the Andaman Sea and belongs to the Krabi province, a tropical and hot-all-year-round place. Made up of the main islands, namely Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh, this archipelago also has smaller islands like Ko Mai Phai (also known as Bamboo Island), Bida Nok, and Bida Nai.

These are coral islands where scuba diving is a favourite activity for tourists. In December 2004, these islands were hit hard by a tsunami but had slowly recovered with infrastructures rebuilt in the following years.

Its rainy season happens from May to October, brought by the southwest monsoon, and its dry season from December to March. In April, before the monsoon hits, there’s a slight increase in rain showers.

There’s still abundant amounts of rainfall in November, especially during the first parts–either for delays in the monsoon’s retreat or due to a tropical cyclone. But there can also be some downpours happening in the dry season, especially during December, when one among them can occasionally become particularly intense.

Phi Phi Island’s Hot Season

From April to May are some of the hottest months in Koh Phi Phi , with the hot temperate ranging from 27ºC up to 36ºC. But frequent short showers also offer a cooling drizzle and welcome relief towards the island’s humidity. During the Songkran or the Thai New Year that happens in April, almost everyone sprinkles or takes part in this festive tradition of throwing cool water on each other.

During the usual fine weathers of June and August, many Thais come to Koh Phi Phi Island. Although there are brief but heavy showers, expect plenty of sunshine between these downpours. Additionally, everything is less expensive during this time of year. Temperatures during daytime range from 20ºC to 33ºC, so enjoy the island’s many beaches in a much more comfortable way.

Phi Phi Island’s Wet Season

Frequent heavy downpours are expected in Phi Phi from September to early October. You’ll stumble upon beaches, outdoor restaurants and streets that are relatively empty during this time. Nevertheless, this situation shouldn’t hinder your visit during Phi Phi Island’s wet season . Enjoy still some long intervals of sunshine between these heavy downpours. So, March and April, along with the first monsoon month of May, are typically the year’s hottest months, with high temperate quite often reaching up to 35/36 °C (95/97 °F).

Precipitation

On average, approximately 2,400 millimetres (or 94.5 inches) of rain befalls the island of Koh Phi Phi each year. Because of the south-western winds affecting the island directly and on the Andaman Sea coast, expect more abundant rain during the southwest monsoon period than on the Gulf of Siam, Thailand’s other peninsular coast.

In addition, there are two peaks in Koh Phi Phi’s rainy season– the first part happens in May, and the last happens during September and October. However, recent years have also showcased torrential rains occurring in July and August.

Being a tropical location by nature, Phi Phi Island has a fair amount of sunshine. It is good during the driest periods of late December to March. Meanwhile, although the sun is not missing during the rainy season, it takes turns and alternates with cloudiness–a factor that sometimes gives significant rise to rain showers.

Tropical Cyclones

Like the rest of Thailand, the Phi Phi islands may sometimes get affected by tropical cyclones. The Andaman Sea area is relatively protected due to cyclones potentially forming nearby. But then, these tropical cyclones will head towards the Bay of Bengal, happening sometime between April and December.

In addition, there’ll be two peaks at the start and end of the period, that is, in April-June and October-December. Meanwhile, typhoons can start arriving from the east, but they generally begin passing more to the north, coming from the South China Sea to mainland Thailand. Although, from time to time, cyclones can also move latitudes, which has occurred in the last few recent decades, from mid-October to about the 20th of December.

The sea is warm convenient enough to swim all year round on the Phi Phi islands. We should also note that the sea can become rough during the summer due to the monsoon, producing some dangerous currents. Always be mindful of these precautions.

Our Half Day Phi Phi Island Tour takes you swimming and snorkeling around Phi Phi Lay Island. We have three departure times to choose from:

6:30am-10:30am Early Bird (start with Maya Beach) 8:30am-12:00pm  (start with Maya Beach) 10:00am-14:00pm  13:30pm- 19:30pm including sunset and night swimming with plankton

The tour includes stopping on the Monkey Beach  to see the wild monkeys. You can enjoy some unforgettable snorkeling in the beautiful waters and a chance to mingle with the lively schools of fish and small black-tip sharks around the shark point and Phi Phi Lay coast. Don’t worry, black-tip reef sharks are harmless. 

We continue with visits to the inlets of Viking Cave , the fjord-like lagoon of Phi Lay Lagoon and the Loh Samah Bay . After swimming and snorkeling we visit the national park Maya Ba y, where you can enjoy the beautiful views of the bay and relax on the beach.

We can not predict the weather and it can change suddenly. If you think bad weather would ruin your trip, please reconsider booking a trip with us. Thailand has a tropical climate that can not be predicted. We can not provide any compensation for rainy weather or change in locations. Another aspect that may affect your trip is the tide. During very low tide, boats can not get to the lagoon, and during high tide there is no beach in Monkey Beach. Please keep all this in mind when making reservations with us. 

WE CAN NOT CONTROL THE NATURE . We can not affect if there will be any monkeys on Monkey Beach, Sharks, or jellyfish in the sea . We live on a beautiful island surrounded by beautiful nature which is wild and unpredictable. On some days we see monkeys, small sharks, turtles, or even dolphins. Some days we don’t see any monkeys, the visibility underwater is not good, and snorkeling is not so great. This is nature and we can not predict, or compensate for any lack of wild animals or nature phenomena. Some days we see a lot of plankton , and some days none, it can not be predicted.

Children below 3 years are free of charge. Children 10 years and older are full price. Speedboats are not suitable for pregnant women. Please check with your GP.

REFUND POLICY:  Our refund policy is a 100% refund if canceled up until 1 month of the date you are booked to come and 50% if you cancel between 48h and 1 month before the date of your trip. Cancelation of your booking less than 48 hours before or no show is no refund. In the unlikely event that we need to cancel due to bad weather, we will attempt to reschedule or offer you a full refund.
