Sky Princess completes first dry dock ahead of Northern European summer season

Princess Cruises ‘ Royal-class cruise ship Sky Princess has completed her first dry dock, with minor upgrades and major technical work done ahead of her summer cruise season in Northern Europe.

Sky Princess spent a total of 16 days in dry dock at Damen Verolme in Rotterdam undergoing regular maintenance and mechanical work.

The project included installation of class certified parts for a new air lubrication system and a full hull painting program, Damen said in a press release.

A total of 1,200 crew members and 700 contractors were involved in the dry docking, the ship’s first since she was delivered in 2019 as the fourth Royal-class ship in the Princess fleet.

Class certification societies, which ensure that ships are built to stringent international standards, require that cruise ships go into dry dock at least every three to five years to check all equipment and machinery and complete routine maintenance work such as hull cleaning and repainting.

During these dry docks, cruise line also make scheduled refurbishments that might include adding or swapping out venues, replacing fixtures and furnishings, and a number of other upgrades, but its unclear whether any major changes were made to Sky Princess’ passenger areas.

As the fourth ship in the 141,000 gross ton Royal-class for Princess Cruises, Sky Princess is largely similar to her sister ships, but introduced the cruise line’s first Sky Suites, with the largest terraces in the fleet, with sweeping views of the pool deck and Movies Under the Stars screen.

Sky Princess carries over a range of popular features found aboard other Royal class cruise ships such as alfresco massages in The Sanctuary (a secluded adults-only pool area), and a range of high-end dining options, including the  chic French bistro La Mer by Michelin-starred chef Emmanuel Renaut.

Explosion is seen after Ukraine’s attack on Feodosia port in Crimea.

Here is a video of the large explosion in Crimea as a Ukrainian airstrike hit a Russian warship during an overnight attack on the Crimean port city of Feodosia , Russia’s defence ministry and officials said.

The Interfax news agency cited the Russian defence ministry as saying that Ukraine had used guided missiles launched by aircraft to attack Feodosia.

Reuters reported that the Russia-installed governor of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, said on the Telegram messaging app that one person had been killed and two injured as a result of the attack.

Large explosion in Crimea as Ukrainian airstrike hits Russian warship – video

Russia’s defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, has briefed Vladimir Putin about the Ukrainian attack on the Crimean port of Feodosia and damage sustained by the Novocherkassk landing ship , Interfax quoted the Kremlin as saying.

Pjotr Sauer

The Guardian’s Russia affairs reporter Pjotr Sauer has the full report on the Russian warship which Ukraine says it has destroyed in a Crimean port.

The Ukrainian air force said it struck the Novocherkassk navy ship, which was stationed in Crimean waters controlled by Russia .

The commander of Ukraine’s air force, Mykola Oleshchuk, said on the Telegram messaging app :

And the fleet in Russia is getting smaller and smaller! Thanks to the air force pilots and everyone involved for the filigree work!”

Footage circulating on several Russian news outlets on Telegram showed powerful explosions and fires over a port area.

Russia’s defence ministry acknowledged via a statement that the Novocherkassk landing ship was “damaged” by Ukrainian guided missiles launched by aircraft, adding that one person was killed and two injured in the attack.

Earlier in the day, the Russia-appointed head of occupied Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, said in a statement on Telegram that there had been “an enemy attack in [the] Feodosia area”, adding that “detonation has stopped and the fire has been localised”.

Moscow is believed to have already withdrawn a significant bulk of its Black Sea fleet from its main base in Crimea after a series of Ukrainian missile and drone strikes last autumn and summer.

Japan’s Mitsui & Co has decided to pull its employees out of Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 liquefied natural gas (LNG) project , the Sankei newspaper reports, citing several sources.

The decision is yet another blow for the project.

Fearing the backlash from US sanctions targeting the project, foreign shareholders have suspended participation, renouncing their responsibilities for financing and for offtake contracts for the plant, the Russian daily Kommersant reported on Monday.

Sanctions have also resulted in Novatek, Russia’s largest LNG producer, declaring force majeure over LNG supplies from the project, industry sources told Reuters last week.

Here are the latest images coming out of eastern Ukraine:

The Guardian’s chief culture writer, Charlotte Higgins, has written her moments of hope column about the young women she met in Ukraine .

She writes:

There is Sofia Cheliak, a cultural broadcaster who also runs the programme for Lviv BookForum , a brilliant literary festival where ideas are exchanged vigorously, held in the thick of war.

There is Bohdana Neborak , who is editor-in-chief of the Ukrainians magazine, a podcaster and cultural manager: she is elegant-minded, intellectually rigorous and an energetic ambassador for Ukrainian literature.

There are the talented, generous, very funny photographers with whom I’ve covered stories for the Guardian, Anastasia Vlasova and Julia Kochetova . Julia told me once that her career had been defined by documenting conflict, not out of choice, but because war came to her doorstep: it’s an unlooked-for, tough destiny.

There’s Oleksandra Matviichuk , head of the Nobel peace prize-winning Center for Civil Liberties, whose work as a human rights lawyer is about strengthening institutions in Ukraine and campaigning for justice for war crimes. She is one of the most poised public speakers I have heard, and uses her quiet, eloquent powers of persuasion relentlessly. I could go on: there are many others.

I don’t like to use the word “hero”. I studied Homer, once: the original heroes, the violent, godlike men of the Iliad and the Odyssey, have nothing to do with these women. In our own times, declaring someone heroic often does that person a disservice, flattening out their human complexity, turning them into untouchable paragons. So I don’t call these women heroic. But when I think of the future of Ukraine in such hands, hope still perches in my soul.

Here is an image of the Novocherkassk landing ship, a navy vessel that Moscow says has been damaged in an overnight Ukrainian attack on the Crimean port city of Feodosia.

Russia confirms navy vessel hit

One person was killed, two injured and a large landing ship called Novocherkassk was damaged in an overnight Ukrainian attack on the Crimean port city of Feodosia, Russia’s defence ministry and officials said.

There was no immediate report of how badly the ship was damaged, but videos circulating on Ukrainian channels showed an extensive fire in the port area.

Ukraine claims major Russian navy ship destroyed in Crimea air assault

Ukraine carried out an air attack on Feodosia in Crimea, the country’s air force commander said on Tuesday, after the Russian-installed governor of the Crimea said the assault sparked a fire in the town’s port area.

Reuters reports that the commander of Ukraine’s air force, Lieut Gen Mykola Oleshchuk , said on Telegram, without providing evidence, that the attack destroyed a major Russian navy vessel, the landing ship Novocherkask.

Oleshchuk said:

And the fleet in Russia is getting smaller and smaller! Thanks to the Air Force pilots and everyone involved for the filigree work!

The report could not be independently verified and there was no immediate comment from Russia.

Both Russia and Ukraine have often exaggerated the losses they claim to have inflicted upon each other in the 22-month-long war, while underestimated their own casualty and equipment losses.

Earlier on Tuesday, Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-installed governor of Crimea, said only that the Ukrainian attack resulted in a fire in the town’s port area that was promptly contained.

Aksyonov said on the Telegram:

All relevant emergency services are on site. Residents of several houses will be evacuated.

Footage posted on several Russian news outlets on Telegram showed powerful explosions and fires over a port area.

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in a broadly condemned move in 2014.

Opening summary

This marks the continuation of live coverage of Russia’s war in Ukraine on this 26 December. Here’s an overview of the latest news.

Ukraine carried out an air attack in Crimea and destroyed a major Russian navy vessel, Ukraine’s air force commander has said.

A huge explosion and fireball engulfed part of the Crimean port of Feodosia early on Tuesday morning. An initial fire was followed by a massive secondary explosion.

The commander of Ukraine’s air force, Lieut Gen Mykola Oleshchuk, said on Telegram that the attack destroyed a major Russian Navy vessel, the landing ship Novocherkask.

The Russian-installed governor of Crimea said earlier that the assault sparked a fire in Feodosia.

More on that that story soon. In other developments:

Ukraine’s cabinet of ministers has submitted to parliament a draft law lowering the age of those who can be mobilised for combat duty to 25 from 27 . Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Ukraine’s president, said a week ago that the military had proposed mobilising up to half a million more Ukrainians but it was a “highly sensitive” issue that the military and government would have to discuss.

The Ukrainian military shot down 28 Russian drones out of 31 launched from the annexed Crimea peninsula, mostly targeting the south of the country, it said on Monday. Air defences also destroyed two missiles, it said.

Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has been located at a penal colony in the Arctic Yamal-Nenets region of northern Russia, his spokesperson has confirmed. Kira Yarmysh was quoted as saying Navalny’s lawyer managed to see him on Monday. The US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, expressed concern at the weekend about Navalny’s whereabouts as he had been missing in Russia’s prison system for nearly three weeks.

Russia said emergency workers had put out a fire on a Soviet-era nuclear-powered cargo-icebreaker ship . The state company that runs the vessel said on Monday there were no casualties and no threat to the security of the reactor.

Russia on Monday accused western countries of stirring up tensions in Moscow-friendly Serbia, which has been rocked by protests over alleged fraud in elections held on 17 December.

Five Russian UAVs (drones) over the region were “destroyed” by Ukrainian forces late on Sunday evening, said Serhiy Lysak, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union’s members have signed a free trade agreement with Iran , Russian news agency Tass has reported.

The Armenian prime minister, Nikol Pashinyan, will pay a two-day visit to Russia, after skipping a summit in Kyrgyzstan Putin attended in October.

Volga River Cruises in Russia

Volga river cruising in Russia places you in another time. The longest and largest river in Europe stretches from Ivan the Terrible to Catherine the Great. Today, live along the central artery of Russia looks like it always has - the villages, the churches, the people, just like an old painting you have seen in a gallery.

The Volga flows through central Russia into the Caspian Sea and is often called the national river of Russia. 11 of the 20 largest cities of the country, including the capital Moscow, are in Volga's watershed. Some of the world's largest reservoirs can be found along the river, which has a symbolic meaning in Russian culture, referred to as Mother Volga (Volga Matushka) in Russian folklore and literature.

Explore the land of the Tsars while sailing down the historic Volga river, typically between Moscow and St Petersburg , the traditional homeports (of embarkation and debarkation). Tour landmarks are the Red Square and Kremlin in Moscow, the Hermitage and Catherine Palace in St Petersburg.

Russian River Cruises - CruiseMapper

Once unthinkable as a cruise vacation destination, Russia is today more accessible than ever, with stops along its largest European lakes and rivers. For river travel lovers accustomed to European itineraries, the Russian experience will be quite different. Russia has a special feel of uniquely designed riverboats. Built to handle larger lakes (Lake Ladoga for example, is the largest European freshwater body of water), these vessels usually feature larger size and capacity (up to six decks), deeper draft, and most of them are refurbished instead of being newbuild.

The itineraries offered are activity-intensive in Moscow and St Petersburg, with long periods of cruising and less ashore time in the middle. Smaller "Golden Ring" cities (so named due to their historic significance) are full of icon-riddled monasteries and Orthodox churches. Most cruise lines hire local experts and fill the days of sailing along the river with lectures on country's history, cooking demonstrations and language lessons.

Most of the tours offered by the companies sailing along Volga River are identical, so customers choosing between the different itineraries should look at how the river ships spend the time within Moscow and St. Petersburg. Some lines have their guests stay onboard, which can be as far as 1 hour out of both cities. Others put their clients up at hotels near the center of the city, with several meals at customer's expense.

Compared with other river routes, Russia features a short season, between early May and late October, with high season in June (known as White Nights because of the endless daylight), July and August. Even if the weather is chilly, there are some advantages to sailing early or late: you'll beat the crowds which can make a visit to the Hermitage a bear. Most Russian museums lack air-conditioning, and while the climate is generally temperate, in the summer Moscow often experiences high humidity heat waves.

Remember to think about your Russian visa at least 2 months before your voyage, to have enough time to fill out the paperwork, including a lengthy online application. And don't forget that the Russian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Even in the cities, you'll rarely find signs in English, so learning some letters and a few phrases will help you get around.

Doninturflot-Orthodox Cruise Company

Orthodox Cruise Company operates a fleet of USSR-design large river ships and serves mainly foreign tourists. The parent company Doninturflot (established in 1992) is the shipowner and manages the fleet.

  • In 2016, was purchased MS Tikhi Don from the UK-based Grand Circle Travel company. In 2017, the ship started operations for Orthodox Cruise Company serving international tourists.

Also offered are themed cruises - especially on food and music, with live performances by grand orchestras and choirs.

Imperial River Cruises Russia has an exclusive partnership with "Orthodox Cruise Company" - one of Russia's largest tour operators. Russian cruise ships

Currently, in Russia is operated a huge fleet of over 200 river cruise ships. All these vessels were built during the USSR (Soviet Union) times, roughly in the period between 1950-1990. Depending on class and series, these boats differ in terms of size, equipment (different engine designs), passenger capacity, onboard facilities and venues, cabins (types and number). Amenities additionally differ by shipowner (cruise company).

Russian river cruise ship

All these old-design Russian ships were completely refurbished and rebuilt for their new shipowners, Some of these ships are operated (via partnerships or under charter) also by foreign companies (like Viking, CroisiEurope, Uniworld, AMAwaterways, Grand Circle, Nicko). During their multi-million-dollar drydock refits, vessels passenger capacities were considerably reduced to improve travel comfort and safety.

Most boats are of the following classes:

  • "Rossiya" (Project 785, 36 vessels built 1952-1958)
  • "Baykal" (Project 646, 15 units built 1953-1956)
  • "Rodina" (Project 588, 49 vessels built 1954-1961)
  • "Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya" (Project 26-37, 14 units built 1957-1962)
  • "Dunay" (Project 305, 47 vessels built between 1959-1964)
  • "Kuybyshev" (Project OL400, 9 units built 1975-1983)
  • "Vladimir Ilyich" (Project 301, 22 vessels built between 1975-1983)
  • "Dmitri Furmanov" (Project 302, 27 vessels built between 1983-1991)

Regardless of their age, all these motor ships undergo regular drydock refurbishments , machinery and safety checks, scheduled repairs (including annual surveys). Drydocks are every 5 years and include repairs, hull inspection, propulsion-steering inspection, general maintenance works.

Each ship is equipped with life-saving appliances (lifeboats and rafts) in amounts exceeding the boat's max passenger and crew capacity. Each cabin is equipped with lifejackets with illustrated instructions in several languages. All ships are equipped with modern fire-fighting systems. Crew and staff are experienced and highly professional certified employees.

  • Yaroslavl is one of the Golden Ring cities of Russia, and the largest city to visit during the middle of your Volga cruise. The town is famous for its gorgeous churches. It also offers several pedestrian-only streets full of shops and cafes, as well as a lovely embankment used as a park.
  • Uglich has a provincial setting. It was found in the 10th century and was a scene of some of medieval Russian history's most remarkable events. Here were exiled the Ivan Terrible’s 7th wife and her son Tsarevich Dmitry. Soon after, Tsarevich was mysteriously murdered here. Soon after, a dedicated to this event church ("Church of St. Demetrius on the Blood") was erected. Within the Uglich Kremlin walls is the town's oldest building - "Prince’s Palace". Other attractions are St. John’s Church and the Transfiguration Cathedral.
  • Astrakhan was founded at the end of the 13th century and is located on the Volga's left bank. Port’s activities extend 100 km downstream and over 300 km upstream along the river. Cargoes are transferred by floating cranes from river ships to seagoing vessels.
  • Goritsy is a small village on River Sheksna, famous for its Resurrection Convent, At approx 4 ml (7 km) from Goritsy is Kirillov - a pilgrimage site with many historical and architectural monuments. Also here is the 17th-century-built 22-domed church - constructed without using a single nail. Its "Church of the Transfiguration of our Savior" and "Church of the Intercession" were rebuilt several times and are preserved in their original 17th-century design.
  • Mandrogi (Mandroga) is a small village on the Svir river recently created as a tourist attraction. It features small wooden log cabin houses. Among the attractions are the St Ipathy monastery, an open-air museum (traditional wooden architecture- izbas, mills, churches are gathered in one place).
  • Kizhi is famous the whole world over. It has become the symbol of the grandeur of unique Russian culture. Visiting the Kizhi Islands gives a great chance to appreciate the enchanting medieval atmosphere and get acquainted with the customs and free spirit of men living in a spacious area with a rigorous climate
  • Kazan. The largest port in the Volga basin, it transships cargoes transported by water alone or by water and rail. The port receives coal from Kuznetsk Basin for Kazan's heat and electric power plant, food and industrial products, and ships out products of city's enterprises and Siberian timber. The port includes Tsentral’nyi, Kama, and Volga cargo areas, as well as a number of landings, the biggest of which is Naberezhnye Chelny and Chistopol’. The basin of the Tsentral’nyi Cargo Area and passenger area are protected by a breakwater.
  • Novgorod (Nizhniy Novgorod) is an ancient stronghold founded by Gran Prince Yuri as a frontier post, is now the 5th largest city of Russia as well as one of the main centers of river tourism in the country. In the 19th century, Nizhniy became the trade center of the whole state as it was the place of the biggest fair in the Russian Empire. A proverb of that time says: "Moscow is the heart of Russia, St. Petersburg is its head, and Nizhniy Novgorod - its pocketbook". The city was renamed "Gorky" in Soviet times, in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky, born there. Until 1990, Nizhniy Novgorod was “closed” to foreigners as USSR protected its military secrets. Nizhniy Novgorod is included in the UNESCO list of 100 cities constituting world cultural and historical value.
  • Samara - during the Soviet period the city was named Kuybyshev, in honor of the Soviet party figure Valerian Kuybyshev. The shortest ways from Central and Western Europe to Kazakhstan, Siberia, and Central Asia run through Samara. The city has a rich cultural heritage: Alexey Tolstoy spent his childhood and youth there. Maxim Gorky started his literary career in the city - he worked in "Samara Newspaper". The Czech writer Yaroslav Gashek also worked in Samara, during the Civil war. Famous artists like Ilya Repin, Ivan Ayvazovsky, Vasily Surikov, lived in the city. During the Great Patriotic War, the Seventh Symphony of Dmitry Shostakovich was performed in Samara for the first time.
  • Tver - the White Trinity Church (1564) is the sole ancient monument of Tver as in 1763, there was a great fire after which the city was rebuilt in Neoclassical style. There are also a lot of buildings of Catherine the Great. Tver State University is highly rated in the region. In 1931, Tver received the name Kalinin, in honor of the Soviet leader Mikhail Kalinin. The city was occupied by the German army in 1941. Only 2 months later it became the first big city in Europe liberated from the occupation.
  • Ulyanovsk is located on the right bank of the Kuibyshev Reservoir. Port's activities extend 90 km downstream and 100 km upstream along the Volga. The port unloads mineral construction materials, food, and industrial products for the cities of Saransk and Uljanovsk, and ships out coal from Kuznetsk Basin, automobiles, foodstuffs. Could anyone tell me if there is a  dry dock scheduled for the Island  Princess any time before Jan. 2021 ?   Was curious if Princess will be updating the ship prior to the World Cruise.   I'm not sure where to look to find the information.   Thanks

Thanks    Doesn't look like anything new is scheduled for the Island on this website just yet.    Maybe in the future.

I'm reviving this old thread here in August rather than creating a new one.

The linked schedule above shows a dry dock for Dec 6 through Dec 19th, and I've seen a brief mention of an upcoming dry dock mentioned in a youtube video as well, but Princess is selling a 10-day panama on the 6th and a 4-day Dominican getaway on the 16th.

I'm booked for the 4-day on the 16th, which I could reconcile with the dry-dock schedule as a conservative dry-dock schedule and the 4-day basically a glorified road test, but the fact that it's scheduled for the 6th really has me scratching my head.  Is there a dry dock coming up?  Conflicting evidence.

The 4-day cruise is likely a way to reset the schedule to days of the week that work better for the overall marketing of the ship - it shifts the subsequent 10-day cruise to not end right at Christmas (likely a terrible time to have cruise passengers flying into or out of the embarkation port).

You have your years mixed up (and the website is wrong - I think that has been posted before???).  The cruises you mention are in 2019.  The dry-dock is in Nov 2020, over in Europe.

The fact that the website is wrong and the real drydock is in 2020 clears it up - thanks!

Wow 2 years since this original conversation...and apparently a 10 month delay on the original Nov 2020 dry dock schedule.  I wonder what's on the to-do list.  I would think updating to accommodate medallion would have to be #1 on the list with new protocols.

The island was my last cruise.  Didn't know it at the time but man am I glad we decided to jump on that little 4-day getaway back in December of 2019! Didn't think a ton of it at the time but we had no idea what was about to happen.

I just emailed my PVP to see if she knows anything if she answers with any news will post. I am on Island in December

Maybe do but your cruise wasn’t cancelled. Whatever

38 minutes ago, rabin1 said: Doesn’t matter cruises are cancelled

Sorry cruises are cancelled but the Island Princess is in drydock right now so the dry docks are still going on.  I just wondered why Princess doesn't post what the changes or new additions are.

Seriously, I have to wonder if the Island is heading to the auction block.

Personally I'd guess they're not really making any significant changes, otherwise they would have made some announcements about it.  I suspect this is more of a case where they had the opportunity to get it's routine drydock requirement out of the way when it wasn't being used for passengers anyways, so it just made sense to do it early.

So what will the Island be doing after dry dock with no cruises scheduled for 8 months?

and therein lies the 64 bazillion dollar question...

We are scheduled for British Isles in July 2022 on Island and are now wondering if it will really happen?

2 hours ago, gbldcl said: and therein lies the 64 bazillion dollar question... We are scheduled for British Isles in July 2022 on Island and are now wondering if it will really happen?

Likewise. We're booked on the July 2022 Fire & Ice sailing. Not optimistic - about this ship or the cruise line for the matter at this point.

About a year ago, we were discussing the cost of maintaining the inactive fleet. Here we are a year later and Princess has two (soon to be three) ships in service; one in Alaska and the other two out of Southampton. This company is hemorrhaging serious cash.

Princess has had two new ships come out since the pandemic began: Enchanted and Discovery. Something has to go, and the Island and Coral (2003) are among their oldest in service now (the Caribbean Princess is now the oldest, 1998). Princess has all but ceded their Caribbean cruise business to Celebrity for now.

Hope I'm wrong here, but this isn't looking too good for the Princess Cruises we all knew and loved. The latest cancellations really hit home for us - or I should say, kept us at home.

Carnival Glory Sets Sail For New Home of Port Canaveral

  • April 19, 2024

princess cruise ship dry dock schedule 2023

The Carnival Glory returned to service today in Barcelona following a 21-day drydock.

The ship is setting sail on a 14-day Carnival Journeys transatlantic cruise to the ship’s new homeport of Port Canaveral, Fla. While guests embarked, Captain Luca Cherchi was joined onboard by Barcelona port officials for a plaque exchange that marked the ship’s special visit, according to a press release.

Over the last three weeks, the ship received several enhancements, including a new casino layout and the addition of a non-smoking casino area, refreshed interior designs and furnishings across all public areas and a newly added Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge, a popular venue that is expanding across the Carnival fleet and honors military veterans and active-duty service members.

A Dreams Photography Studio was also added and upgrades were made to the ship’s spa.

For younger cruisers, the dedicated onboard youth space, Camp Ocean, was redesigned and a large video wall was added to enhance the Space Cruisers program, which includes curriculum developed in partnership with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The ship’s Warehouse video arcade was refreshed as well. Guests will also notice updates to public areas across the ship.

On May 2, the Carnival Glory will join Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista and Mardi Gras, in Port Canaveral, where she will offer three- and four-day itineraries visiting The Bahamas, including Nassau, Freeport, Princess Cays and Bimini. Carnival Liberty is repositioning from Port Canaveral to New Orleans and will arrive there on May 6.
