Manoj Tulsani is an Indian entrepreneur who runs a successful business in Dubai , with its branches across the world. In this exclusive interview with Startup Insider, Mano j talks about his eventful business journey.

1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your business in a few words?

I am CEO of the Dubai-headquartered Rayna Tours and Travels . As an all-inclusive Destination Management Company, we are one of the leaders in the industry; we are well equipped to take care of all facets of travel requirements on both B2C and B2B segments. This ranges from global hotel reservation, flight booking and arrangement of transfers to visa services (international), holiday packages, luxury travel and MICE solutions.

2. When did you come to Dubai and what was your initial career background like?

Coming from a modest family in Ajmer , Rajasthan , I finished my college studies with a background in commerce from the University of Mumbai. Less than a year after this in 1999, I came to Dubai, UAE at a young age of 21 years old. I landed my first job at Safeer Group of Companies as a marketing executive and later moved to Time Machine Group of Companies where I got my greatest career break as the Head of the Marketing Department.

3. How did it all start? What really prompted you to begin your business in a new industry?

Right from the start of my career till 2006, I worked in the trading scenario. But, the career shift to a new industry (service) stemmed from my genuine passion for travel and entrepreneurship. This actually prompted me to start Rayna Tours and Travels, together with my friend, Kamlesh Ramchandani . Our business sail started off from a small boutique in Flora Grand Hotel in Dubai .

4. How did you grow your business?

When Rayna Tours was launched in 2006, its main goal was to help the hotel guests to make the most of their Dubai holiday; we mainly focused on offering tours and activities for them. As the business began to get noticed, we opened more outlets (some 15 plus) in two years. It didn’t take long for us to raise the status of our business from a travel boutique to a full-fledged Destination Management Company. In 2009, we opened our main office at Abu Hail’s Old Labour Building, which after a decade (in 2019) got a new bigger facility at ACICO Business Park, in Deira.

We have our office not only in the UAE but also in about 10 countries. We have bolstered our presence on the web as well, thanks to our dedicated entity, Technoheaven Consultancy. Besides being responsible for the exceptional running of our main portals ( www.raynatours.com and www.raynab2b.com ), it has developed a wide array of apps, programs, etc that would make travel as convenient as possible for all types of travelers.

Rayna Tours’ incredible growth is also attributed to some successful mergers. Since 2018, Arabian Explorers, a more than 30-year-old Destination Management Company, is a part of Rayna Tours. Its CEO , Yasser Noman , is currently Rayna Tours’ Executive Chairman . Himanshu Laul – the highly brilliant and creative architecture graduate from IIT, Roorkee – is the company’s Managing Director.

5. What make Rayna Tours and Travels stand out from other related service providers?

We always place emphasis on our customers’ unique travel requirements. In fact, majority of our holiday or travel experiences are handcrafted and personalized to meet and exceed the demands of our guests. Moreover, we are one of the very few travel management companies without any intermediary or middlemen for most of our tours or services, in particular safaris, cruises, and luxury activities such as yacht tour limousine sightseeing tours. 6. How do you deal with challenges and setbacks?

Never take your failures or industry challenges as personal. Instead, I believe every setback gives us an opportunity or more precisely, a chance to rectify our mistakes in the execution of a plan and further evolve. So, the most vital thing is to admit your flaws when you go wrong. Next thing is to analyze in detail the reasons for its failure and not repeat it again. Knowing how to deal with your failures is sure to take your business to incredible heights.

7. What is the future goal of Rayna Tours and Travels?

Travel is back in full swing and so is the market with some promising trends. As our business is now growing rapidly, we would like to make the most of this dynamic opportunity and see our business flourish as a travel brand that is celebrated and recognized globally. We, apparently, look forward to treading unexplored international markets and opening more branches in different parts of the world in coming years.

8. What are the most important takeaways in your business?

The market is ever-evolving with fiercely intense competition. You, therefore, must be quick to act and make decision in line with the industry demands. However, Instead of simply rectifying the current shortcoming with swift transient remedies, make sure that you always think long-term; this will make your business future-ready. It is fortunate that we live in a digital era where we simply don’t have to rely on word of mouth strategy or other conventional marketing techniques to grow our business. Leverage the endless possibilities that technology and digital world offer and try to get the best out of it.

9. If you have to give one valuable piece of advice to the next generation of entrepreneurs, what would it be and why?

Never give up! It is simply one main advice I would like to give to new and young entrepreneurs . Setting up a new business is not an easy task; it is even tougher when you set out to do it without any background or experience in the industry. But, you can keep yourself in the right direction – all you need is the belief in yourself as well as the ability to think out of the box. This alone will help you to overcome the struggles and take you forward.

Hi Manoj! What's your background, and what are you currently working on?

Hey there, I am Manoj Tulsani! I grew up in Ajmer in the Indian state of Rajasthan. In the late 90s after the completion of my graduation in the commerce stream, I came to Dubai. At the age of 28, I, along with my dear friend Kamlesh Ramchandani, started Rayna Tours which has now emerged from a travel boutique to one of the UAE’s premier destination management companies. I am currently the CEO of Rayna Group which focuses on diversified business activities like real estate, construction, and transport, apart from managing travel business spread across different parts of the world.

What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?

Before starting Rayna Tours, I worked with Safeer Group of Companies. And later, at Time Machine Group of Companies, where I was promoted to the more responsible position as Marketing Head. After almost seven years into my professional career, I decided to explore an unchartered territory. That is when I began to deeply think about the possibilities of launching Rayna Tours in 2006. My love for travel, curiosity to discover exotic cultures, and my passion to reach out to more and more people, were the main reasons that inspired me to take up this huge risk. And no sooner, I and Kamlesh were onboard to taste the challenges, difficulties and obviously the success of entrepreneurship.

How did you build Rayna Tours?

We kicked off our entrepreneurial journey from a small travel outlet in Dubai’s Flora Grand Hotel. In those days, people traveling to Dubai used to book hotels in advance and often ignored the importance of tour reservations. And this is where we saw the opportunity; our target was to organize quality tours at low cost to the hotel guests. This proved to be highly innovative (at that time) and we began to get an amazing response which enticed us to open seven more outlets in two years. And by 2009, we had established ourselves as a full-service Destination Management Company with our main office in Old Labour Building, Abu Hail Dubai. Ten years later, it’s gratifying to see everything in place. We’re now active in both B2C and B2B verticals, besides our successful presence in close to 10 countries.

Which were your marketing strategies to grow your business?

We thought about tons of them. Some turned out to be lucrative and some others were unsuccessful. One of our major marketing strategies has been to invest in our own desert camp plus an extensive fleet of luxury vehicles, yachts, dhows etc. This has allowed us to guarantee the best rates in the industry for the majority of our services such as desert safaris to limo tours, transfers and dhow cruises.

Another great strategy was to get into the online world; Our website is now one of the largest all-inclusive platforms on the web to compare, select and book a vast spectrum of tours and holiday packages in a few easy steps.

We are really active on almost all social media platforms where we share our latest news, promotions, product launches, etc. We’ve also launched a user-friendly app for the convenience of our guests. More importantly, we have introduced several innovative programs in order to better serve and give back to our community of agents and travel operators, such as R Points. There is a dedicated technical team in order to ensure the unprecedented efficiency and top performance of all our online services. Besides our high-end technological solutions, we focus on traditional marketing techniques as well, such as printed ads, phone calls, face to face meetings, and direct emails.

What were the biggest challenges you have faced and obstacles you have overcome?

It was apparent from day one that we’re doing something different. l though the concept of getting started was quite easy, but the beginning wasn’t so smooth. As a complete newcomer in the industry, we ran into several unexpected obstacles and challenges.

There were financial constraints and the worst part was that we didn’t have a mentor or a good team or great experience or a fail-safe business plan to survive in this industry. We have had plenty of bad days, but what always kept us going was a strong belief in ourselves and our idea. There was a lot of struggles to find the right resources, a team with enough pool of employees and mostly, align our offerings to our customers’ interests. Despite anything, we have focused on a detail-oriented approach with top quality offerings and economic pricing right from the beginning. That’s what absolutely resonates with our end users and throughout made us a highly recommended choice among our customers.

In fact, it’s thanks to our genuine efforts and unwavering determination that we have now come a long way. However, I think tackling challenges is something ongoing and unstoppable as the industry is ever evolving, bringing in many uncertainties every now and then. You should be therefore always prepared to confront improbable situations and devise innovative solutions which effectively respond to the most difficult of problems.

Which are your greatest disadvantages?

I think I am a complete workaholic and really obsessive about the quality of our travel services and new offerings. But I must confess that I really enjoy what I’m doing.

One downside is that my busy schedule has sometimes posed difficulties in terms of making myself present for my dear ones as well as the team. Fortunately, I am blessed with a deeply talented workforce and a great family; my wife Rinkie, daughter Rayna, and son Aryan are incredibly understanding and always supportive of my ideas.

During the process of building & growing Rayna Tours, which were the worst mistakes you committed?

We have made lots of mistakes in the process of building Rayna Tours, but especially these were what encouraged us to move forward with confidence. In fact, every failure has given us only a valuable lesson. So I believe that there is nothing as mistakes. I would rather refer to them as experiments which turn you away from repeating the same folly again. So don’t be afraid to commit mistakes or more precisely experiment with your thoughts and ideas. You’re only winning when you learn and take home some valuable lessons from your slip-ups.

If you had the chance to do things differently, what would you do?

Well, this is strange but I genuinely don’t want to change anything about my business journey. As I told earlier, we had to face so many struggles in different phases of setting up Rayna Tours and Travels. And what’s amazing is that all of them had only made us wiser and better people. In fact, I am deeply grateful to this incredible entrepreneurial journey which has helped us to bring the best out of us.

Apart from mistakes, what are other sources for learning you would recommend for entrepreneurs who are just starting?

This may sound cliché but make sure that you follow your heart and be consistent with your ideas. And the most vital thing is to utilize all available avenues and resources to make yourself abreast of the up and coming industry trends and innovations. As the industry is evolving, you can now count on several innovative avenues for ideas and inspirations. There are effective podcasts, inspiring books, and guides which can help you to learn more and more.

So trust your entrepreneurial spirit, go ahead with your unique ideas, and make the most of the opportunities / resources available all around. Above all, always be open to challenges; they will get you out of your comfort zone while making you more spontaneous and spot on with pragmatic business decision makings. Please introduce your Startup and give a brief about yourself.

I am Manoj Tulsani, the CEO of Rayna Tours and Travels. Kamlesh Ramchandani (my friend and partner) and I founded this venture a decade ago from a small travel counter in one of Dubai’s five-star hotels. Rayna Tours and Travels is now a leading destination management company which provides extensive tours services for all types of travelers, regardless of their size and travel requirements. 

How can you describe your Startup?

More than ten years, Rayna Tours and Travels has now reshaped the way people travel and enjoy holidays.Our user-friendly online portals and convenient apps (available on both B2B and B2C platforms) help travelers to simplify the whole travel planning process while giving them maximum flexibility to easily compare and put together all components of their holiday under one roof. This avoids any overspending and allows our guests to travel within their desired price point. The best part is that all these are backed by our excellent round-the-clock customer care team. 

What were you doing before?

After the successful completion of my graduation course in commerce, I came to Dubai in 1999. I worked at the Marketing section of Safeer Group of Companies where I met my friend and partner, Kamlesh Ramchandani. I also possess a brief experience working with Machine Group of Companies where I became the head of the Marketing Department. 

What is your inspiration behind your Startup?

Kamlesh’s passion for entrepreneurship and my love for travel and meeting new people were actually the real source of inspiration behind the launch of Rayna Tours. Following a long stint working in the trading industry, we realized that we should have our own space where we could be more independent, nurture our interests, and make the best use of our deep expertise, creativity and leadership capabilities. That’s how the idea of starting a venture in the service industry came to us! 

Describe Your Startup Name, Why you are using this Name?

We operate under the brand name Rayna Group which acts as umbrella for all our diversified business activities, covering travel, construction, and real estate industries. As we started this venture soon after the birth of my daughter, we named the company after her name, ‘Rayna.’

What was the idea behind starting Startup?

As we initially opened our travel counter in Dubai’s Flora Grand Hotel, our main idea was to organize Dubai tours and activities for our hotel guests. Luckily, no one was doing this back in 2006, although there were tons of options to book accommodations in advance. So we became one of the pioneers and somewhat instrumental in solving a huge industry problem by making our guests’ Dubai holiday a whole lot easier and smoother. Once the concept got clicked, we targeted more hotels without a travel counter. This resulted in the opening of 15 such outlets in two years. In 2009, we moved to a bigger facility as we established ourselves as one of the region’s top Destination Management Company. 

What are the services you offer to your clients?

As a one-stop platform for all travel needs, our product and service portfolio encompasses all aspects, such as international visa services, worldwide hotel reservations, all-inclusive hotel packages, sightseeing tours, desert safaris, cruises, water activities, and entry tickets to the main landmarks, theme parks etc. Based out in Dubai, the company has now branches in different parts of the world, including India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cape Town. 

How did your journey start towards your startup from planning to fund?

Rayna Tours is fully self-funded. To start the company, Kamlesh and I had to pull all our personal savings, roughly AED ½ million. 

What is your stack on the competition? Who are your competitors? How you are overcoming them?

Wedo experience some severe challenges and hard-hitting competitions every now and then. But we take it in a very positive way; this not only keeps us on our toes but also helps us to give our travel packages and technological servicesthe much-needed boost from time to time. Fortunately, we’ve an expert team to analyze the dynamic market trends, know the customers’ changing demands, and craft new tours / packages which respond to their needs. 

Is the Startup growing at good phase according to your plans? What are the upcoming plans from your end?

Yes; starting off our entrepreneurial sail with just two of us, we’re now a family of 600 members which interestingly represent 15 plus nationalities from several unique cultural backgrounds. Our journey so far has had its share of challenges and ups and downs. But what we really make us different from other service providers is that majority of our services don’t have a middleman in between.This allows us to guarantee both best pricing and exceptional support services to our customers. As we continue to grow rapidly, we look forward to explore new markets and introduce more innovative offerings. 

I think everyone has some inspiring person in their life and some taglines? Who are they, what is their role in your Startup life?

For us, our customers always come first as we consider them as the backbone of our business! Right from the beginning, we’ve always placed emphasis in listening to our customers’ demands and of course feedbacks, be it positive or negative. Initially, we got our majority of our businesses through word of mouth and we’re extremely proud that it still continues to be our main source of advertisement. Rightly so, majority of the coveted awards and accolades that we’ve won for our services have been are based on honest reviews and public voting, such as TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence and Arabian Travel Awards (for Best Destination Management Company and Best B2B Portal). 

What is your experience as an Entrepreneur?

We hope to establish our footprint in more destinations across the world, thus looking forward to strengthen our brand and offerings internationally. 

What do you suggest people who are interested in starting their own business?

The start is always gruesome, so it’s easy to lose that enthusiasm or passion as you begin to the face the reality. So my greatest advice for newbies is that never allow this to happen; have faith in yourself, your unique ideas and business goals. Moreover, never take challenges as failures; instead deeply analyze it, try to figure out the flaws and learn from it. This will push you forward, taking you a long way.

I am Manoj Tulsani . I grew up at Ajmer, in Rajasthan, India. As the co-founder of Rayna Group, I mainly run Rayna Tours and Travels which is one of the UAE’s leading Destination Management companies.

We make all elements of travel easier for all types of travellers, with exclusive sections for international visas, global hotel reservations, all-inclusive holiday packages, MICE, transfers, luxury cruises, desert safaris and more.

We also help travel agencies and travel operators to grow their business and revenue through our dedicated B2B portal RaynaB2B . In a concise nutshell, our focus is to help people discover the pleasure of life through travel experiences enriched with prized moments.

When and how did you think about ‘Rayna Tours’?

I moved to Dubai in 1999 upon finishing my graduation in commerce.

I initially worked with Safeer Group of Companies as a Marketing Executive and then with Time Machine Group of Companies as the Marketing Head.

I have always been interested in travel and meeting new people; this really prompted me to walk out of the trading industry and make a foray into the service industry by opening Rayna Tours and Travels in 2006.

From whom you got the inspiration to start ‘Rayna Tours’?

This may sound unbelievable but the reality is that we have come this far without a mentor or a role model. Our key to success has always been our ability to understand our strengths and skills while looking back on our mistakes and evaluating them (rationally) for further business growth and development.

Introduce Rayna Tours Co-Founder/Founders and Team.

We started off our venture literally from a scratch with just two of us, including Kamlesh Ramchandani, my friend and colleague at Safeer Group of Companies.

Mr. Yasser Noman is the chairman of Rayna Group, while I am its CEO.

What makes Rayna Tours special?

Rayna Tours is a one-stop Destination Management service provider where you will find all aspects of planning, organizing and implementing a successful travel program under one roof.

Starting from the visa services to helping you with the selection of the right accommodation choice to the arrangement of all local activities and tours, we take care of every minute detail of a holiday or travel.

How is it different from any other similar companies?

What makes us competitive and sought after in the industry is our business strategy which offers the best price guarantee to the major chunk of our services.

This is because we sell our products and services directly to our customers while dodging all conventional sales channels.

Overall, there are no expensive intermediaries that add to the cost of our services.

What challenges did you face while setting up “Rayna Tours”?

We saw Rayna Tours’ beginning as a small outlet in one of Dubai’s hotels, Flora Grand Hotel.

Starting a new venture in a new industry wasn’t a big deal, but staying ahead was! Fortunately, we happened to be amazing in it.

Our initial goal was to organize tours and activities for the hotel guests.

As the concept got clicked, we opened more similar outlets by 2008 and further carved out a space for ourselves in the industry as a full-suite Destination Management Company by 2009.

There has been no turning back since then. That said, we have had our share of challenges, failures and risks throughout the journey.

I wasn’t a natural-born businessman and we didn’t have a proper plan or reliable steady financial resources to run the business properly. It wasn’t easy for us to foresee the obstacles that came along the way.

We, however, never delved into the mistakes or wrong decisions we took, instead we have always managed to learn some vital lessons from every worst and most challenging situation.

We believe that failures and hurdles are inherently linked to change and creativity. So, if it is treated properly, they can leave an effective trail behind for your business development and success.

What’s Rayna Tour’s revenue and growth rate?

  We took our business off the ground without any outside investors.

We kicked off with a bootstrapped amount of AED ½ million.

As we continue to grow and innovate, we now have an estimated net worth of 100 million USD.

What’s the current path, “Rayna Tours” funding status & future plans?

Besides our head office at Dubai’s ACICO Business Park Building, Deira, UAE, we have our presence in more than 10 countries across the world.

Our goal in the coming years is to take our business and brand to more and more new markets, making our travel services more accessible and global.
