Why The Volkswagen ‘Thing’ Might Be An Even Better Safari Vehicle Than A Jeep

Thing V Jeep Ts

I just returned from Indonesia , where I partook in the less-steamy parts of my brother’s honeymoon; among them was a ride around Bali in a Volkswagen Thing, which isn’t dissimilar to the VW Kuebelwagen that went toe-to-toe with the Jeep during World War II. VW and Jeep have competed ever since, as the two brands have had a larger influence on global car culture than any two others (go to any country on earth, and you’ll find a VW or its derivative; ditto with Jeep, especially if you consider that the Land Rover and Land Cruiser both started off life as Jeep imitators — millions of folks have had to choose between a Jeep and a Volkswagen). As someone who has extensive Jeep experience and limited VW experience, what did I think of the Thing? Well, I think in many ways it may be superior to the Jeep.

Let me begin by saying that my flight back to the U.S. landed last night, and in addition to ending up sick, I didn’t get a wink of sleep. So this blog is likely going to have some flaws. But let’s get into it. At first blush, it may seem odd to compare a rear-wheel drive, air-cooled VW to a four-wheel drive liquid-cooled Jeep, but go to the remotest parts of the world, and those two are often the only choice: It’s either a VW or some form of a Jeep. And while “some form” often includes Land Cruisers and Land Rovers and Mitsubishi Pajeros and Suzuki Jimnys, for this comparison, I’m just going to talk about the true Jeeps that I’m used to — vehicles vastly superior off-road than pretty much any VW not named Iltis . But just because Jeeps are better off-road, does that make them better for, say, island safaris? As I came to find out, the answer is a firm “no.”

Vidframe Min Top

The drive began at our hotel just outside of Ubud. It’s a town nestled in the jungle about an hour and a half inland from the airport, which sits on the southern shore of the island. Folks typically travel to Ubud to relax, drink coffee that originated in a cat’s poop , do Yoga, explore beautiful waterfalls and rice terraces, and get massages. It’s further proof that I, a former oil-covered Detroit junkyard-warrior, have gone soft. But also, I was here to hang out with my brother:

Screen Shot 2023 12 20 At 8.36.34 Am

I’d been expecting Jeeps, which is why when a pair of VW Things showed up, I was a little bummed. But in short order, it became clear to me that these Things are much, much better than not just the Jeeps I’m used to, but certainly the “Jeeps” running all around Ubud. These Suzukis:

385531255 2398080233711880 2825898220715590741 N

The reason why is simple: Even though the Volkswagen Thing, which is largely based on the Beetle (but with a wider pan) and inspired by the WWII Kuebelwagen , is significantly less advanced than Jeeps in terms of powertrain and drivetrain (the Jeep has a liquid cooled engine and four-wheel drive, while the VW is an air-cooled motor with two-wheel drive), the body is significantly more advanced than those of Jeeps — namely, VWs were unibody and open-top Jeeps have aways been body-on-frame.

411337927 797189152137280 3652612253150979690 N

What does this mean practically? Well, for one: SPACE.

A unibody vehicle uses the body itself to carry all the loads that go into the vehicle from the road (braking, accelerating, steering, hitting potholes, etc), whereas a body-on-frame vehicle needs a separate frame to handle loads. The result is that adding the frame creates bulk, which becomes especially noticeable when you sit in the VW Thing.

Screen Shot 2023 12 20 At 4.24.51 Pm

“I feel like this thing is too low to the ground to be good off-road,” my girlfriend said to me while comparing the riding experience to my Jeep Wrangler YJ. “Well actually, we’re  sitting low, but actually the ground clearance is quite good. You see, the unibody construction of this — yadayadayada (this is where my girlfriend tuned out).”

Case in point, check out this giant pothole:

Screen Shot 2023 12 20 At 2.34.45 Pm

The Thing soaked it up without issue:

Screen Shot 2023 12 20 At 2.34.21 Pm

More impressive than the good ground clearance/low center of gravity combo is all the storage the unibody construction affords. I mean, look at this frunk:

406927872 357762303511796 4063871649930243352 N

And check out behind the second row:

398474950 272160008841231 4335844061863802708 N

Speaking of the second row, look at all that space! You can easily fit three people across in the second row, and the legroom isn’t bad!:

410640162 881687380406527 3565440507809892006 N

What’s more, check this out — the seats fold!:

410895368 1735713440228183 6796080959014887269 N

If you’re not impressed, you need only look at the lack of space in a Jeep like my 1991 Jeep Wrangler. That’s this:

Screen Shot 2023 12 20 At 2.58.37 Pm

Jeeps like this have been the go-to rental cars on islands like those of Hawaii, but if we’re being honest, these machines are a bit miserable. I mean, look at how little storage space there is behind the rear bench (and this is the only cargo storage the Jeep has):

Screen Shot 2023 12 20 At 2.55.22 Pm

Look at how narrow the rear bench is, and look at all that useless space to the left and right — that flat surface above the wheel wells is a complete waste — if you drive around with something sitting on top, it will just slide off and end up in the footwell:

Img 0536

Speaking of the footwell, the legroom behind the front seats is awful:

Screen Shot 2023 12 20 At 2.56.44 Pm

You may be wondering: “Why are you comparing a 1970s VW to a Jeep YJ?” The truth is, it doesn’t really matter — the YJ, if anything, is on the bigger side. Compare the Thing to the old CJ5 from the early 1970s, and you’ll see that old CJ was even more cramped:

And the Willys Surrey — a vehicle specifically meant to haul people around resorts? It was also really tight in the back seat, and wasted a lot of room trying to clear drivetrain components that didn’t exist (the Surrey was rear-wheel drive but shared the body of a four-wheel drive CJ-3A):

Screen Shot 2023 12 20 At 3.19.08 Pm

The truth is, unless you’re going off-road, Jeeps aren’t really the best runabout vehicles. And even if you are going slightly off-road, the VW Thing can hang! The engine sits close to the rear axle, weighing the driven wheels down; along with a suspension that travels quite well, this gives the Thing confident traction:

403398638 1546689146108594 8196964424648115441 N (1)

I’d also like to note how sweet the folding windshield is:

385529666 1597138757698514 7943437720860589145 N

The release clamp isn’t unlike a Willys Jeep’s:

367385119 261676839978749 7340644241103299998 N

But instead of a tie-down strap to hold the windshield against some big wood blocks, there are little rubber sockets meant to fit the metal balls integrated into the windshield:

385532686 378751517899776 4581419103924391624 N

It’s clever stuff. Quick and easy, and apparently good enough to keep the windscreen down at moderate speeds thanks largely to the sheer weight of the thing. The view out of the front is phenomenal!:

Screen Shot 2023 12 20 At 4.21.27 Pm

My coworker Jason tells me that some of these “Type 181s” came with portal rear axles, but the models I was riding in — presumably late 1970s models — appear to have featured semi-trailing arms with torsion bars:

393159019 1179270726366825 6082695983450575692 N

I also have to give a shoutout to the doors, which have an inner and outer panel, with the space between used for storage (but I assume primarily there to give the door stiffness):

367361232 2667035600127808 1607161161812437688 N

Overall, I have to hand it to the Type 181 “Thing.” There’s a reason why in some markets it’s called the Safari: It is, in some ways, the ultimate. It’s got tons of room, it’s good enough off-road, the lack of pillars and the easy-fold windshield makes for amazing visibility, the VW powertrain and drivetrain is bone-simple and incredibly easy to find parts for. If you’re not doing crazy off-roading, the Thing is better for the driver and for the rider — it is an absolutely fantastic package, and a whole lot of fun.

Jeep gods, you may now strike me with your wrath.

Has not a single person commented on DTs zip off cargo pants?

Clearly a sign that LA has taken him. A hardened Midwesterner wouldn’t have taken long pants to Bali.

I learned how to drive in a VW Thing on a muddy farm. It was bone stock except for some narrow little mud tires and never got stuck going to the back pasture. An FJ60 Land Cruiser, a 1978 Jeep Cherokee with Quadratrac! (this system seemed engineered to insure that only the one wheel with no traction would turn), various 4wd pickup trucks, and a CJ-7 all got stuck up to the axles at one time or another. Not the Thing! It also rode over bumps much better than any of those vehicles.

This brings back fond memories. Back in the ’80s when I was a kid my dad was general manager for Garuda Indonesian Airlines at Melbourne airport, so I got to travel to Indonesia many times, and my dad would borrow cars from local friends while we were there. I still very clearly remember bombing around the jungles of Bali with young me in the back seat of one of these.

MegaVan

Seems like a Willys Jeepster would be a more apt comparison than a Wrangler. Not sure how those were on space though.

Why not a VEEP?

LactoseTheIntolerant

I currently have an 81 Jeep CJ-5 and my last project car was a 70 VW Type I (beetle)

I think this is an apple to pear comparison. Both are simple to repair, both are fun in their own way. Growing up, we had a neighbor who had two Things. They are weird, quirky, and reliable.

Daily driving, the Beetle is just better. 4x4ing, the Jeep can be modified slightly to do more for a low cost $300 for an Aussie locker in the front or rear axle and it now has 3 wheels engaged. Oddly, with full soft doors the heater is equally terrible as the Beetle’s using the engine heat.

Honestly, I think the AMC 4.2 is more reliable than my old Beetle. The oil cooler would leak no matter what I did to stop it. The same was almost true for my Jeep’s valve cover, until I figured out the magical gasket to stop it.

Bummer about the Covid, David! I hope you feel better, soon!

The Clutch Rider

David, are you ok? 🙂

David Tracy

Currently have COVID-19, but more broadly, yes I am OK.

sorry to hear about the covid. Good luck with the recovery

This would be the first time I have hear that something might be better than a Jeep

Cousin in Norway had one of these on his farm, he said better than a jeep because lighter- his had the portal axles as it wasn’t actually a thing but a basterdized kubelwagen- neighbor had a kettenkrad with the front wheel missing that he used to pull his boat out of the water and small farm duties

I really never got why you needed a super duper off road vehicle in the first place. I started using a VW Squareback for my off road and ski adventures. Off road in the Mojave Desert, it was king. I would go out to some god forsaken place and end up in the capital of nowhere and there would be a Land Cruiser FJ and some CJ something jeep. They would be astonished I was able to make it. Well it was kind of a goat. No, really would not rock crawl in it, but really there is no super good reason to that in the first place, unless there is some kind of body part measurement taking place. For skiing it was great in the snow and you could sleep in the parking lot inn the back. Its major shortcoming would come out; a complete lack of effective heating. My Squareback was a vehicle we had when we lived in Switzerland, acquired off the European delivery system. Drove it all over Europe for a few yeas before it was handed down to me to thrash.

While not a Thing, it had most of the effective good features and handling off road and in the snow. I ended up becoming a geologist, much to the dismay of my NROTC commander, since they sent me to be a pilot. I sold the Squareback in favor of a Land Rover Series IIa. It did do better off road, not by much. It was also a box of noisy brain damaging noise on the highway. You do have to go some distance on highways to get to the off-road part. There have been times I missed the medium noise of the VW purr on the highway. I ended up driving Land Rovers, like forever. On my ninth, with a new Defender in the garage. I would have likely gotten another rear engined VW to go to the field with, except VW abandoned them after the Vanagon, which I tried a VW Vanagon Syncro Westfalia for a bit. It was too delicate for any off road of consequence. It lost the “simple” aspect of previous rear engined air cooled ones. You also had to maintain AAA membership, preferably Platinum level, so you could get it home about 1 out of 20 trips.

I was engaged to the VW distributor’s daughter for a while at UCLA. He told me the Thing was conceived to be upgraded, but the market share in the US would never justify the engineering cost to give it crash and emissions standards to meet the CARB rules and front impact standards. It would have had to have the Rabbit engine and a radiator to give it any hope on emissions and all this would have more or less made it a non-Thing after they beefed up the front. That and the Rabbit engine would hang down below the pan a bit unless the doghouse for the engine got a lot taller.

Mr Sarcastic

I am a thing fan. However if memory serves these dumpsters on wheels were discontinued do to horrible safety ratings?

Rust Buckets

I think they were discontinued at the same time as most other air cooled vws in favor of higher horsepower, newer, more efficient, and I’m sure safer Golfs.

Not to disagree but Wikipedia mentions in NA they were unable to meet 1975 stricter safety standards. But yeah they certainly were not high powered.

Dumb Shadetree

They rust immediately, which is probably why David likes them.

My 0.02 Cents

The screen folds down for great visibility. “ The view out of the front is phenomenal!:”

Rollover protection (if you can call it that) not so much.

I do wonder if it is possible to rollover a thing based on turnover alone?

I suspect you’d really have to try, but at the same time you wouldn’t want to succeed…

Engine Adventures

What exactly do you store between the outer and inner door panels? It appears to be some sort of white powder wrapped in green plastic wrap.

Icouldntfindaclevername

Congrats David’s brother. David, also glad to hear you had a great vacation with your family and friend(s).

Roundup: All the Enthusiast-Built Safari Creations That Will Inspire You to Hit the Backroads

Roundup: Enthusiast-built safari cars that will inspire you to hit the dirt roads

Written by Daniel Lackey

The recipe is fairly simple: take an orthodox car, add unorthodox ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and hit the dirt.

Inspired by the East African Safari, and in particular, the Martini liveried Porsche 911s that took part in 1978, the popularity of the ‘Safari Build’ continues to climb to heady new heights. While specialists like Leh Keen and Richard Tuthill craft best-in-class offroad Porsche platforms ranging from FIA legal rally cars to the creative and conceptual, the craze has been seeing enthusiast-built projects surface left and right.

Although the Porsche 911 is the most prominent platform, the off-road road car concept can be applied to just about anything. With a splash of Group B and a pinch of Baja 1000, there are a few people who have diverged from the traditional path to create some truly unique vehicles. Perhaps the genre's newfound popularity is due in part to our eagerness to get out of our homes and into the wild following the pandemic restrictions, or, perhaps we feel the need to flee the heavy traffic of our crowded city streets. Either way, it looks like the Safari build is here to stay.

We scanned the interwebs and Instagram to find some of our favorite builds which you can browse and follow below:

Alfa Romeo GTV: Dropped Alfa

safari vw off road

The car: Dropped Alfa | The photographer: Jeff Stockwell

Moving a little off-piste, I’d like to introduce you to the ‘Dropped Alfa’, a 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV aptly named after it fell off the back of a truck while in transport. Prior to being ‘dropped’ this Alfa Romeo was built for carving the canyons outside LA. After the drop, it remained badly beaten until brothers Iliya and Nikita Bridan, of Oil Stain Lab , came up with a plan for its reincarnation.

The twins, who both work as designers, discussed many potential plans but settled on a Safari build, after all, they couldn’t damage it any further by taking it off-road. The Alfa lent itself surprisingly well to the conversion. Lifting the suspension proved to be straight forward and the body could accommodate large tires without modification. The tuned engine is better suited to blasting through the desert than climbing steep trails. The car was developed over time but proved so popular that it led them to construct a follow-up Safari build.

I Am Detailing's BMW E30 325ix

safari vw off road

The car and photo: Jakub Marek (I Am Detailing)

Expert car detailer Jakub Marek spends his days preparing some of the world's most special cars for premier concours displays. In his free time, he does the exact opposite. After owning over 20 BMW 3-series, he took this 325ix almost completely apart and built it into a off-road capable machine for the Gambler 500 in less than a week (yes you read that correctly). This included making a custom skid plate on front to protect oil cooler and oil pan for the upcoming event.

After servicing the engine and brakes and adding 27/8.5-14 tires, Jakub proceeded to drive the car from LA to Oregon just in time for said Gambler 500 event and the car performed flawlessly.

Alfa Romeo GTV6: Aether Alpine Alfa

safari vw off road

The car: Aether's Alpine Alfa GTV6 | The photographer: Shayan Bokaie

Following the success of Dropped Alfa, the Bridan brothers were commissioned by Aether Apparel to build another Safari car. Aether wanted something unique and discussed many potential platforms including a Porsche 968, but the decision was made upon the discovery of a low mileage Alfa Romeo GTV6. Work began immediately. Concept drawings were realized in 3D while they attended to the Alfas electrics and mechanicals.

The rear suspension of the GTV6 is a complex affair with de Dion tube, trailing arms, inboard disc brakes, and a 5-speed transaxle. A simple lift wasn’t going to be possible. The rear end was 3D scanned so components could be designed and manufactured to lift it properly while retaining the correct geometry. The results are simply exquisite, a properly engineered car that can handle off-road with an equally arresting aesthetic that complements Giugiaro’s original design.

Time For A Safari? 1973 VW Thing

safari vw off road

If you were going to take a safari, where would you go? I’d go somewhere warm and dry, but the person who took this 1973 VW Safari—I mean, “Thing,” for the US market—has chosen another path, a leafy  abode which is picturesque but likely hasn’t done the little vehicle any favors in terms of preservation. Still, at an asking price of $6500, this Thing might be a good candidate for restoration, if you can get to Flowery Branch, GA, in the greater Atlanta area (by the looks of the craigslist ad ).

safari vw off road

The Thing, or more broadly the VW Type 181, was manufactured as a purpose-built military vehicle from 1968-83. It was first sold for civilian use in 1971. In various parts of the world, this  four-door convertible had names like “Thing,” “Safari,” “Trekker,” and others. Back when it was being sold new, it was an interesting alternative to the more commonly seen VW Beetle

safari vw off road

Where would you start on this one? It’s listed as having all original parts and is described as a great restoration project. Though the ad presents minimal information, I’m guessing that the fact that it mentions that there are original running boards, windshield frame, top frames, and hubcaps means that these parts are difficult to find or frequently not part of the package when one buys a barn find version of this model. Looking at the photos offered, the one concern that might present itself is corrosion, and one image seems to show rust-through in the unibody. VW experts, please weigh in on what we’re really seeing there, as there is also undercoating apparently flaking off of this same area.

safari vw off road

The condition is described as “fair,” and there is mention of a dual port engine being present, but there’s no indication as to the last time the car was run, nor whether the engine turns as it sits, and no mileage claims. So just assume that, if you make this your new winter project, you’ll be doing a total strip down and repaint, along with finding seat materials and upholstery, a top, and all the other soft bits, plus mechanicals. Is all of this a bit overwhelming? Not for the dreamer who has always wanted a Thing, with its slab-sided charm. All you need is a pith helmet and a pair of big binoculars, and you’ll be ready to chase the elephants, rhinos, and zebras that will surely appear in your neighborhood when you go on safari. Or Safari, depending on where you live.

bobhess

Unless they were added by the owner I’d say the side vents put this as a ’74 model. Either way, it’s pretty rough and not worth the asking price.

Suddenly my 73 seems like a much more viable project. Thanks 👍

HoA

Thanks, Jamie, I forgot all about that until just now. Actually, the song was “Gimme Dat Ding”, and I think VW changed it enough so I doubt the Pipkins got any royalties.

safari vw off road

Shame on whoever left this Thing out in the elements. If they had just taken care of it they might get what they’re asking, but not in this state of “delayed maintenance”. Pass (at that price).

safari vw off road

I think it’s cool, steep price but it does say or best offer and cash talks every thing else walks. If I had the time and money I would drop the body on an older Ford Aerostar frame with the 4.6 and 4wd then see if I can get it entered into the off road games in Hurricane Utah in March

I almost bought a pink one for $1,000. Wish I could go back!

any know the ol TV show name mentioned above (12/3, 11:37)?

Russell Built Fabrications Safari Porsche 911

The Safari Porsche 911: Off-Roading the Alternative Way

People often think off-roading requires specialty vehicles. So, they put up a Jeep Wrangler’s or Land Rover Defender’s drawbacks to be able to crawl over rocks. Or they shell out large sums for Mercedes G-Wagons or Rolls-Royce Cullinans . But then they worry about damaging their expensive SUVs. And while inexpensive off-roaders like the Suzuki Jimny and Mitsubishi Jeep do offer cheap fun, they aren’t always available in the US. There are also safety risks to consider. But there is an alternative, one that offers speed, style, and touch of history. That would be the Safari Porsche 911.

What is a Safari Porsche 911?

A Safari 911 isn’t an official Porsche model. Rather like the ‘classic vs. vintage’ debate, the term ‘Safari 911’ can refer to mildly-modified cars all the way to rally racers in all but name.

But the basic formula, according to Hagerty , is the same. Start with an air-cooled 911, lift the suspension, add additional lights and underbody protection, and fit sturdy off-road wheels and tires. Then go find some dirt to speed through.

It’s become quite a phenomenon. After driving one for The Drive , Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire bought one for himself. His personal Safari 911 serves as a good ‘average’ build. But there are more extreme versions.

Russell Built Fabrications Safari Porsche 911

Autoblog and The Drive reported that former Singer fabricator T.J. Russell of Russell Built Fabrication has built a more racing-oriented Safari 911. Russell’s off-road 911 comes with, among other mods, up to 13” of suspension travel at the rear. That’s almost as much as a Ford F-150 Raptor. And like the Raptor, Motor1 reports , this Safari 911 can also be had with four-wheel drive. With 365 hp pushing 2800 pounds, this Porsche can fly through the desert.

Is a Safari 911 actually a good off-roader?

You might think that a vehicle that’s relatively close to the ground wouldn’t be good off-road. And, to be fair, with off-roading, ground clearance is arguably the most important consideration. That’s why owners install lift kits and bigger tires , why Mercedes gave some G-Wagens portal axles.

But off-roading isn’t all about scrambling over rocks. The G550 4×4 Squared may conquer hills, but its tall height makes it wallow through corners. And while the Jeep Wrangler’s solid axles do make it great for rock-crawling, they don’t help it at high-speed rallying. It’s why Chevy turned to independent suspension for the new Tahoe and Suburban . And it’s also what helps make the Safari 911 a good off-roader.

1976 Porsche 911 3.0-Liter Rally

In addition, the off-road 911 trend didn’t just come out of nowhere. While Porsche may be more well-known for victories at races like Le Mans and the Nurburgring 24 Hours, the German automaker has its own rally history. Autoblog recently reported on one 1976 Porsche 911 rally car that had done “more competitive miles than any Porsche,” according to Bonhams . Petrolicious has documented Porsche’s entries in the East Africa Safari Rally. And the technological icon that is the 959 was originally designed as a Group B racer .

In other words, the Safari 911 idea is another chapter in Porsche’s off-road sports car history.

How can I get one?

With how popular the idea is getting, there are several shops that have become well-known for their Safari 911 builds. One of these is Leh Keen, owner of The Keen Project. The company has built both of the Safari cars Matt Farah drove.

However, as Hagerty has described, Safari 911 builds aren’t cheap, even without modifying the engine. The suspension has to be properly lifted and modify to retain the car’s handling, skidplates have to be installed, and so on. And this is all before factoring in the cost of an air-cooled 911.

You don’t need to start with the most-valuable air-cooled 911 you can find, though. The Russell Built Safari 911, for example, starts with a 964-gen 911, which Rennlist describes as “semi-affordable.” However, you can also build a Safari 911 out of a 1984-1989 911, the Carrera 3.2— Road & Track ’s Colin Comer bought one for just under $35,000. And if that still doesn’t work, Jalopnik reported on one owner who turned their 996 water-cooled 911 into a Safari build.

The Porsche 911 is also not the only car you can ‘Safari’. Classic Alfa Romeos, Mercedes—all these and more can be modified for off-roading. The whole point of the Safari 911 build is to make a car that can be driven and enjoyed in a wide variety of environments, not just stuck in a garage.

So if the idea of taking an SUV off-road doesn’t appeal to you, you can always take a Porsche 911 on a safari.

Safari 911: Are Porsche’s More Fun Off-Road?

When most people hear the word Porsche they usually think of the 911, even though the first cars were designated the 356. The 356 hit production in 1948, and ran until 1965. Interestingly, the 911 which would replace the 356 was launched 2 years earlier in 1963. Despite the difference in model designation, the outside envelope and drivetrain configuration of both cars were very close. The familiar shape and mechanical layout conceived by the car’s designer, Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche are still in use today. The 2020 Porsche Taycan is an all-electric sports car that still resembles the familiar 911 shape. The 911 is an icon, and people don’t like anyone messing with an icon. The 911’s original air cooled engine design was so coveted by enthusiasts that there was much controversy when it was retired in 1998 to be replaced with more conventional water cooling. I wonder if the Taycan has the battery bank laid out in a “flat six” configuration.

Porshe 911s lined up

Most people drive their Porsches on the street. Although the 911 was known for simplicity, and driving pleasure, they were still luxurious, and rather expensive. They were out of reach for many. That fact created envy, and also spawned the Porsche snob. It’s easy to be a snob when you are so successful. Racing on pavement, Porsche has earned an impressive 19 overall wins at Le Mans to go with over 50 class wins. They also have endurance wins including 18 at the 12 Hours of Sebring, and another 18 at the 24 hours of Daytona. They have won the FIA World Endurance Championship three times, and own 12 manufacturer, and team titles in the World Sportscar Championship.

While no Porsche snob in their right mind would get their prized 911 muddy, there were those who were quite successful competing in the dirt; including the factory. While some wanted luxury and status, the cars durability and performance made them perfect for rally, hill climb, and offroad competition. Off the pavement, Porsche has four Monte Carlo rally titles, and a couple of Dakar Rally wins. The exotic all-wheel drive Porsche 959 was originally developed to compete in Group B rally competition but was never realized due to the cars cost. The 959 did however take 1st, and 2nd place at the Paris-Dakar rally in 1986. Porsche already won the Paris-Dakar rally in 1984 with a 911 RS/SC 4×4. The win in 1986 was with the same driver, Rene Metge in one of the two 959 models entered.

Offroad set up Porsche 911

If you wanted to run a rally today, you would probably contact the Tuthill Porsche team . They outfit Porsche 911’s for rally competition. In 2013, they built 17 vintage 911’s for the East African Safari Classic Rally in Mombasa. 15 of the 17 cars finished the grueling rally. A Safari 911 that you need to check out belongs to Kelly-Moss Road and Race Director of Operations, Andy Kilcoyne. His 911 is extensively modified for the dirt.

So are these 911 Safari builds just to thumb their noses towards Porsche purists, or are they legitimate offroad performers? Certainly Porsche’s own success in the dirt would demonstrate that the latter is the case. Surprisingly, one of the 911’s greatest weaknesses on pavement makes the car superlative in the dirt; Trailing Throttle Oversteer. Those three words strike fear into 99 percent of Porsche 911 owners. Because the engine is mounted in the rear, the back end of the car outweighs the front. The ratio for the 911 varies from 58 to 60 percent of weight on the rear wheels. The most extreme case was the 1979 930 turbo. It had 63.8 percent of the weight in the back end. When you cut the throttle sharply on a rear engine car, the heavy rear end can act like a pendulum. The back end will come around, and cause uncontrollable oversteer. Uncontrolled Trailing Throttle Oversteer on pavement is bad. Controlled Trailing Throttle Oversteer in the dirt with grippy offroad tires is a blast. Just let off the gas for a second, flick the steering wheel opposite to where you want to go, and then bury the throttle to drift through the corner. On the pavement the goal is to drive at the limits of your tires adhesion without going overboard. On the dirt, it’s much more fun to hang it out in the turns, but that’s not all.

Kelly Moss Racing Porsche Safari 911

It’s common knowledge that the Porsche has many similarities to the Volkswagen which was designed by Ferry Porsche’s Father, Dr Ferdinand Porsche. The rear engine configuration, light weight, independent rear suspension, and torsion bar springs are shared by both cars. Those attributes made them extremely capable offroad. Many offroad racers were VW based. VW’s were also used extensively during the fiberglass dune buggy craze during the 60’s. Unlike the Porsche, Volkswagens were inexpensive, and produced in massive numbers. By making a few simple changes, any 911 can become a solid offroad performer. Some Porsche bodied cars where raced offroad, but mainly in the highly modified unlimited classes. They were somewhat of a novelty, however the platform is well-proven. The latest unlimited, open wheeled race cars competing today are rear engine designs with an independent transaxle driving the rear wheels, just like the 911.

Kelly Moss Racing Porsche Safari 911

So what’s holding most people back from building such a fast, proven, and fun car for the dirt? It’s the cost. Anything with a Porsche badge on it has skyrocketed in value in recent years. While you might find a rough example that needs work for a reasonable price, most well-kept 911’s, no matter what the year can go for anywhere from 60 thousand to well over a hundred thousand dollars. A quick internet search for let’s say a 1976 Porsche Turbo Carrera came back with a lovely example for the bargain price of 229,900 dollars. To be fair, you can find 1974 to 1977 models for good prices, but the 2.7 liter engine had problems that can be costly to fix. As long as you are not concerned with originality, a 3.0 liter engine can be bolted right in. If you are going to tweak the suspension, and fit larger tires why not? The offroad 911 will grow in popularity, it’s just too fun to drive to ignore. Then there will be those who build one just to bother the Porsche snobs out there. Whatever your motivation, you will have a unique car that attracts attention, and is a blast to drive.

Tata Motors unveiled their all-new 7-seater SUV safari in the market. They had only unveiled at the beginning of January that they will be naming their upcoming SUV Safari, which was name of their iconic SUV which got discontinued years ago. We even got a chance to experience the all-new SUV and if you want to have a look at our review on the all-new Safari, click here . We already know that the new Tata Safari is entirely different from the older version and is not available with a AWD or 4WD option. Here we have a video that shows how the new Safari performs off the road.

The video has been uploaded by Bunny Punia on his youtube channel. The video is all about how Safari performs at an off-road course. All-new Safari being a 2WD SUV, it was not taken to the extreme sections of the adventure zone. The Safari was taken up a steep section and a quick round of the off-road adventure zone was done to get a hang of the all-new safari. After that was done, the SUV was taken to the tyre catcher obstacle. This is such an obstacle where the vehicle gets stuck if there is not enough low end torque and ground clearance. luckily, the all-new Safari has both and cleared the section without any drama.

Also read: Mahindra Scorpio vs Tata Safari in a classic drag race (Video)

Bunny then took Safari to a section to test the approach and break over break over angle of the new SUV. They SUV was driven through a small pit and it managed to come out of it without hitting the bottom or the bumper. Even at good speeds, the bumper and the bottom of the SUV were not hitting which is actually a good thing. Next was the slush part, were the terrain mode was shifted to Wet mode. This is meant to provide better traction and handling in rainy or wet condition but, the after manually turning of the ESP you can actually have a bit of fun with the SUV and the same was seen here in the video.

All-new Tata Safari SUV in an off-road review

After the slush, the Safari was taken to a section which is known as axle twister. This is quite a challenging section as the Safari is a 2WD vehicle. The low end torque came in handy during this section and helped cross the section without much problem. The steep incline and downhill section at the adventure zone meant, the hill descent control can actually be used. Overall, Safari performed pretty well in the video and even though it is a 2WD vehicle, the SUV managed to bring a smile on the face of viewers.

Coming back to Safari, it is based on the 5-seater Harrier and the SUV is powered by the same set of engine. There are some cosmetic changes in the SUV and the weight has also gone up. The SUV is powered by a 2.0 litre Kryotec turbo diesel engine that generates 170 Ps and 350 Nm of peak torque. The engine is available with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox option.

Noam Scheiber has covered labor unions since 2015.

By voting to join the United Automobile Workers, Volkswagen workers in Tennessee have given the union something it has never had: a factory-wide foothold at a major foreign automaker in the South.

The result, in an election that ended on Friday , will enable the union to bargain for better wages and benefits. Now the question is what difference it will make beyond the Volkswagen plant.

Labor experts said success at VW might position the union to replicate its showing at other auto manufacturers throughout the South, the least unionized region of the country. Some argued that the win could help set off a rise in union membership at other companies that exceeds the uptick of the past few years, when unions won elections at Starbucks and Amazon locations.

“It’s a big vote, symbolically and substantively,” said Jake Rosenfeld, a sociologist who studies labor at Washington University in St. Louis.

The next test for the U.A.W. will come in a vote in mid-May at a Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama.

In addition, at least 30 percent of workers have signed cards authorizing the U.A.W. to represent them at a Hyundai plant in Alabama and a Toyota plant in Missouri, according to the union . That is the minimum needed to force an election, though the union has yet to petition for one in either location.

“People only take action when they believe there is an alternative to the status quo that has a plausible chance of winning,” said Barry Eidlin, a sociologist at McGill University in Montreal.

Still, it’s unclear how far the campaign may spread beyond German manufacturers. Volkswagen and Mercedes have been relatively friendly to unions outside the United States, and a recent German law could prompt financial penalties against companies that crack down on union organizing.

Compared with previous elections in Chattanooga, Volkswagen’s pushback against the union was mild this time, according to workers. The company presented reasons it believed a union was unnecessary, including pay that is above average for the Chattanooga area, but said it left the decision to the workers.

Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at the research firm AutoForecast Solutions, predicted that most Japanese and South Korean manufacturers with plants in the South would be more difficult targets for the U.A.W. because they have worked hard to develop a close relationship with workers or have butted heads with unions in their home country, or both.

The Chattanooga vote could also lead to a broader political battle over unionization within the region. Business and political leaders in the South say a greater union presence could threaten their states’ economic advantages and slow down job creation.

“If we become less competitive, why not do it in Detroit?” said Gerald McCormick, a Republican who was the Tennessee House majority leader when the U.A.W. first prompted a union vote at the Volkswagen plant in 2014.

Six Republican governors highlighted those concerns in a statement on Tuesday, which said that the union campaign was “driven by misinformation and scare tactics.” Opposition from state and local politicians helped defeat the union in a vote at a Nissan plant in Mississippi in 2017 and in elections at VW in Chattanooga in 2014 and 2019.

The U.A.W.’s political support for Democrats — the union endorsed President Biden’s re-election in January — could also be a vulnerability in such a fight. Isaac Meadows, a worker at the Volkswagen plant, said in an interview in February that the endorsement had led some co-workers to have second thoughts about the union, but that he had advised them that “the political landscape changes every four to eight years and doesn’t directly affect us.”

Even so, a change in presidential administrations could bring a more skeptical National Labor Relations Board, which presides over union elections and enforces labor law and could make it more difficult for the union to win at other plants.

Worker advocates and union organizers acknowledged that the win in Chattanooga could trigger a strong response. “You have to imagine the backlash,” said Erica Smiley, executive director of Jobs With Justice, which helps workers seeking to unionize and bargain collectively. “My hope is that enough people understand both within the U.A.W. and within the union world writ large that you have to defend the union election.”

Organizers also conceded that any momentum generated by the union victory in Chattanooga could be muted until workers there win a contract that brings concrete gains, a process that can take years.

It has been two years since Amazon workers at a Staten Island warehouse became the first to win a union election at the company in the United States, and they have yet to begin bargaining as the company challenges the victory. The lack of progress toward a contract appears to have complicated organizing efforts at other Amazon sites.

But the Volkswagen employees in Chattanooga have advantages that the Amazon workers lack. Unlike the Amazon Labor Union, their union is well established and can invest millions of dollars in staff and legal work to help bargain a contract. And Volkswagen appears more willing than Amazon to bargain, partly because of its labor ties in Germany.

“If workers in Chattanooga get a great contract, a big raise, better health benefits, and then the same thing at Mercedes, there will be a lot more good opportunities to win good contracts in short order,” said Madeline Janis, co-executive director of Jobs to Move America, a group that seeks to create good jobs in clean technology industries.

Ms. Janis, whose group is involved in unionizing factory workers in the South, said the momentum could travel beyond the auto industry to other manufacturers because employees at different companies in the region often know one another and discuss these issues. “Their brothers and sisters and spouses are working at other plants,” she said. “It will be all over social media.”

And some experts said that a rise in unionization at factories could spread to other types of jobs. “The enthusiasm is contagious across sectors,” said David Pryzbylski, a lawyer at Barnes & Thornburg who represents employers. “People look at it and say, ‘Hey, I think there’s something here. Maybe I should be interested in it, too.’”

Several workers echoed the point, saying they had drawn encouragement from labor actions in other industries over the past few years. Successful campaigns in Hollywood and at companies like Starbucks and Apple “have been a major boon for us,” said Emma Geiger, a worker at Sega of America who helped unionize the video game maker last year. “Especially in the perception of unions on the whole as not something to be feared, but to be embraced.”

Overall, nearly 70 percent of Americans say they support unions, according to Gallup , up from about 50 percent a decade and a half ago. After dropping for several years, the number of union members increased by nearly 280,000 in 2022 and by about half that amount last year, though the percentage of workers in unions dropped slightly because even more people entered the work force. Filings for union elections were up 35 percent in the six months ending in March compared with the same period one year earlier, according to the National Labor Relations Board.

During the mid-1930s, union membership grew by several hundred thousand for three straight years, then jumped by roughly three million in 1937, most of it after the U.A.W. organized General Motors.

Another expansion on this scale is unlikely given changes in the economy, including the shift away from manufacturing as a source of jobs. But Michael Lotito, a lawyer at Littler Mendelson, which represents employers, said the past few years had produced “a lot of kindling” that could make it easier for a fire of sorts to spread.

Citing workers’ frustrations over the pandemic and return-to-office policies, which they have amplified on social media, he said that “from a management perspective, it’s of concern.”

2025 Ram 1500 RHO Vs. 2024 Ram 1500 TRX - What's The Difference Between Ram's Mega Off-Road Trucks

2025 ram 1500 rho.

Base MSRP $69,995

Engine 3.0L Twin-Turbo Inline-6 Gas

Horsepower 540 hp

Torque 521 lb-ft

Top Speed 118 mph

0-60 MPH 4.6 Seconds

2024 Ram 1500 TRX

Base MSRP $96,340

Engine 6.2L Supercharged V8 Gas

Horsepower 702 hp

Torque 650 lb-ft

0-60 MPH 4.5 Seconds

Quick Links

Power & performance: it's a one-sided battle, off-road ability: the rho is a trx without the power, visual aggression: both have the show to match the go, is the supercharged v8 really worth $55,000 extra.

Ram is adamant that the new 1500 RHO is not a replacement for the dearly departed TRX , but we thought it was still necessary to compare the old top-spec go-faster truck against the latest, fastest version of the heavily revised 1500 range to see just how different the two are.

The biggest difference between the two is obviously the cylinder count and the means of forced induction. The TRX used a 6.2-liter V8 engine with a supercharger bolted to the top, while the RHO is equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six. So, instead of just having a replacement for displacement on our hands, we also have turbocharging vs. supercharging, which we've luckily covered in great detail before.

Turbocharging Vs. Supercharging Vs. Twincharging

If this competition was based on which truck can jump the highest, the RHO has the TRX licked. The TRX's original press pack shows the truck getting some decent air, but it's hardly an image worthy of a poster. The guy behind the wheel of the RHO went full send, however. We've never seen a truck that high off the ground. Just look at the images below. The Ram RHO's jump is mighty, and this one photograph makes it absolutely clear that it's coming for the Ford F-150 Raptor's crown. But before we get to that, let's take a look at how the RHO stacks up against its (not) predecessor.

As you can see from the table above, the 1500 RHO is thoroughly trounced in the power department; the RHO is 162 horsepower and 129 lb-ft down compared to the TRX. Ram has effectively removed an entire Toyota Corolla Cross engine's worth of power from its new truck. That makes the RHO a loser on paper. But hang on a minute... the less powerful RHO only takes a tenth of a second longer to reach 60 mph. A Formula 1 driver would be able to tell the difference, but you and I certainly wouldn't be able to.

Still, there are independent tests out there that prove the TRX can do it in less than four seconds, and yet Ram doesn't claim a lower figure. The reason it doesn't is that it's quite hard to match and beat the manufacturer's claimed times. We have loads of experience with this and trust us when we say that it's not something you'll want to do to your truck on a regular basis.

10 Fastest Pickup Trucks

The quarter-mile times are also shockingly close. Considering the TRX's power advantage, you'd expect the gap to be bigger. One poor launch and the RHO is going to spank your TRX hard, and no amount of V8 noises will cure that bruised ego. For the record, the Hurricane engine doesn't sound terrible, but there is definite room for improvement. The good news is that the TRX name isn't gone for good . Ram revealed that it will be shelved for now. How it will return is up for debate, but given all the hybrid technology Stellantis is working on, it will most likely be a plug-in hybrid of some sort, and our sources have indicated electrification is almost a certainty for its revival.

When we first learned about the RHO's existence, we thought its suspension setup would be nothing more than more robust dampers that allow for greater wheel articulation. As it turns out, the RHO is a serious bit of kit, on par with the TRX. It comes standard with air suspension, Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive performance shocks made of high-strength aluminum, and Dual Electronic Proportional Valves that constantly adjust the compression and rebound. The Bilstein dampers even come standard with a three-stage jounce control to keep them from bottoming out during the "most extreme events." That's PR speak for "jumping over stuff is totally cool." At the rear, it has a Dana 60 axle with an electronic locker and an axle hop damper. The latter will keep the rear axle from bouncing over washboard gravel, for example. Not that the truck needs it because it has a full-time four-wheel drive system, so both axles are constantly getting a share of the power.

The TRX is also equipped with a permanent 4WD system, and most of the other goodies mentioned above. When it was new in 2021, those Bilstein dampers mentioned above were designed specifically for the TRX, and it's nice to see the technology being carried over. Both cars also have model-specific driving modes tied to their 4WD systems, allowing even a noob to get the most out of these performance trucks. The torque split varies between these modes, with slow-speed off-roading modes giving you a 50:50 split, while the naughtier modes send up to 70% of the power to the rear wheels for obvious reasons.

The RHO is remarkably closely matched to the TRX's off-road dimensions, with identical ground clearance, an identical turning diameter, and a breakover angle within a tenth of an inch. But it beats the TRX in two critical measures - 0.8 degrees better on its approach angle and 1.7 degrees better on its departure angle.

Let's face it: these trucks need to have a presence because you don't drive vehicles like them unless you want to get noticed. The good news is that the Ram RHO has carried over the large hood scoop, aggressive air vents, and blacked-out grille with "RAM" lettering. The main difference is that the 2025 model has all the latest updates, including new headlights, wheel designs, and an RHO sticker pack. We can only hope the RHO gets more interesting exterior color choices because the TRX's five options weren't good enough.

Because the RHO is based on the heavily revised Ram 1500, it gets a brand-new, much-improved interior with some model-specific bits. Highlights include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch touchscreen display running Uconnect 5, a head-up display, and a 10.25-inch screen for the passenger. Safety features include lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It even comes standard with 12-way power leather front seats with a massage function, memory settings, heating, and ventilation. Looking at the old and new interiors side-by-side, it's clear which car is the winner.

The Ram TRX has an MSRP of roughly $97,000, and it will depart after the 2024 model year. As a result, dealers are making the most of the USA's obsession with the V8 engine. The dealer markups across the country are currently sitting at $25,000, bringing the total plus destination to $125,000. The Ram RHO arrives in the third quarter (TRX production will be done by then), and it starts at $69,995. That's a price difference of roughly $55k, provided dealers don't try to make a quick buck on this too. Ram may have removed a Corolla Cross' power from under the hood, but it's an entire GR Corolla, plus a few options, cheaper.

To us, that's not a bad deal considering the performance gaps aren't as big as we thought they'd be. With that in mind, the RHO wins this comparison easily. It may lack the V8 noise, but in almost every other metric, it's a step up or shows negligible difference, which leaves us wondering how epic a future iteration of the TRX might be.
