Desert of dreams: how and where to experience the Sahara

Apr 1, 2013 • 4 min read

sahara travel kovin

A fount of solitude and the desert of childhood imaginings, the Sahara Desert is like nowhere else on earth. It is the world’s largest desert, at once continental in its scale and exquisite in its detail, from a sand sea the size of a small European country to an orange sand dune sculpted to perfection by the wind. Covering a territory roughly equivalent to the United States, the Sahara crosses around 20 lines of longitude and encompasses at least 10 countries.

Parts of the Sahara are currently off-limits to travellers, but such is its scale that significant areas can still be visited, most notably in Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt. In these places, experiencing the Sahara is all about remote campfires, slow camel journeys and more wide-ranging 4WD expeditions.

Saharan travel

A journey into the Sahara can be as varied as the desert itself, but there are some quintessential experiences. Most begin in the gateway towns where expeditions out into the desert are organised. Often oases, these towns are centres of Saharan culture, places where the architecture emerges naturally from the earth and the slow pace of life has changed little in centuries.

For exploring beyond town or village limits, there are two major means of getting around. A slow march across the sands astride a camel re-enacts the great camel caravans of Saharan lore – on a camel safari, travellers slow down to a pace well suited to the Sahara’s unforgiving climate, allowing you to appreciate details and pass through this spectacular terrain at one with your surroundings. In a 4WD expedition, travellers can range further, stirring up the sand as you tick off a list of iconic Saharan landscapes.

Sleeping between four walls is an experience that ends in the towns. Out amid the sands or remote Saharan mountains, evenings are spent around a campfire, and a soft bed of sand is the night-time mattress of choice. Most Saharan excursions carry tents, but many travellers prefer to sleep outdoors beneath the clearest show of stars on earth.

Travel in the Sahara is best between October and April or early May when daytime temperatures are generally bearable. In the depths of the Saharan winter (especially December and January), nighttime temperatures can fall below freezing. Sand storms are possible from January through May, while no sensible person ventures into the fierce firestorm of heat that blankets the Sahara from June to early September. Rain is rarely a problem.

Southeastern Morocco , in the lee of the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains , is the most accessible slice of the Sahara. It was in the Draa Valley – a picturesque world of expansive palm groves, earth-red kasbahs and Berber hamlets – that trans-Saharan camel caravans began and ended their 52-day journey across the Sahara to Timbuktu. These days, shorter camel excursions head out from M’Hamid into the Erg Chigaga , a stunning 40km-long ribbon of extraordinary sand dunes. Further east, from the tiny village of Merzouga , camel forays and 4WD trips lead out into Erg Chebbi , a glorious collection of seemingly eternal dunes. Both Merzouga and M’Hamid are a one-day bus journey from Marrakesh .

Tunisia ’s south cuts a deep wedge into the northern Sahara, carving out what could just be the Sahara’s most celebrated corner. It was here that film directors found sufficient cinematic beauty to provide a backdrop for the Star Wars series and the English Patient . The two main gateway towns are Tozeur , a seven-hour bus ride or one-hour flight from Tunis , and Douz , a nine-hour bus ride from Tunisia’s capital. The former sits close to the immense salt lake of Chott El Jerid and some of the most evocative sites of Star Wars filming; the latter is the last stop before the soul-stirring sand summits of the Grand Erg Oriental, one of the world’s largest seas of sand that spills over into Algeria. For true Saharan immersion, the remote outpost of Ksar Ghilane, 147km south of Douz, has an abandoned fortress and the Tunisian Sahara’s most splendid scenery.

The west of Egypt is a vast yet beguiling corner of the Sahara. A string of oases, connected by barely discernible tracks across the sand, begins in the north at Siwa , home to a crumbling medieval mud fortress and a temple that date back to the time of Alexander the Great. Away to the south, the oases of Al Kharga, Dakhla, Farafra and Bahariya provide focal points for expeditions into the void, while beyond the last outpost of human habitation lie places of Saharan longing, including the White Desert  and  Black Desert . All of the oases have direct bus services to and from Cairo that will take at least a day to complete. Once in the oases, 4WD are much more common than camel excursions. Some governments advise travelling to the western deserts of Egypt only if it's essential.

Where is the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is in North Africa. It spans a mighty 9,200,000 square kms across 10 countries, including Morocco, Egypt, Mali and Libya.

It's the world's largest hot desert and third-largest after Antarctica and the Arctic.

What is the weather like in the Sahara Desert?

As a desert region, the Sahara can experience extreme weather. Winter (December to February) can be very cold, with overnight temperatures dropping to 5°C or lower.

You'll need a sleeping bag, thermals, a scarf, gloves and a warm jacket for travel in winter.

Oh, and be prepared for cold showers at your desert camp!

Summer (June to September) can be very hot with intense temperatures that can reach the high 40°Cs. This might be too uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. It's super important to use sun protection and stay hydrated. That said, the desert can still get pretty chilly at night when the sun goes down, so you'll need a fleece to rug up.

Spring (March to May) sees the arrival of strong winds and there is an increased risk of sandstorms in April – but don't worry, your leader will always check the forecast beforehand to see if it's safe to stay in the desert.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara Desert?

The best time to visit the Sahara Desert is during the spring months between March to May, as well as the autumn months of October and November. During these times, the desert temperatures are hot but manageable and the nights don't get quite as cold. However, one thing to note is that between January to May there is usually a higher number of sandstorms recorded, especially in April.

What clothing should I wear in the Sahara Desert?

What to pack will differ slightly depending on the time of year and the activities you'll be doing. But below are the basics you'll need:

  • Light scarf or face mask can be handy for preventing you from inhaling desert dust
  • Sun hat – wide-brimmed, ideally, to protect your face and head from the sun's rays and strong winds
  • Sunscreen – when you're in the desert, it goes without saying!
  • Small daypack for day trips and excursions
  • Light, loose-fitting pants
  • Joggers or jeans for camel rides
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Fleece – for all seasons
  • Warm layers (for winter trips) – you'll need thermals, gloves, a woolly hat and a fleece to rug up as the temperatures can drop to below freezing at night
  • Small head torch – handy for going to the bathroom at night
  • Thongs (flip flops) for camp
  • Hiking shoes or runners

What animals live in the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is one of the fiercest environments for animal life.

A wide range of mammals live in the Sahara, from cheetahs, dromedary camels, desert foxes, gazelles, ostrich, and hyrax to African wild dogs.

Reptile life includes the desert crocodile, sand viper and the desert monitor.

Other common species include the deathstalker scorpion, the Saharan silver ant, and over 90 species of birds.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

A Guide to Visiting the Sahara Desert

Planning a trip to North Africa can be quite a daunting task, so here is my ultimate guide to visiting the Sahara Desert. For the longest time, I dreamed of visiting the Sahara. Just the thought of being able to ride a camel out into the desert, and camp under a blanket of stars in the middle of nowhere seemed very romantic to me. And while the experience didn’t exactly live up to those romantic expectations (no one really tells you how physically fit you need to be to climb up sand dunes…or how it takes months to empty your shoes of sand), it was still one of the coolest things I’ve ever done! Spanning almost a third of the African continent, and touching 11 different countries, the Sahara Desert is one of the largest deserts in the world.

Should you do a guided tour when visiting the Sahara Desert?

How much does visiting the sahara desert cost, is 3 days long enough to visit the sahara desert, our 3-day sahara desert tour experience, day 1: ait ben haddou kasbah + dades valley, day 2: todra gorges + merzouga dunes, day 3: merzouga dunes + draa valley + ouarzazate, what to pack when visiting the sahara desert.

RELATED POST : Why You Should Stay in a Riad When in Morocco

Sahara Desert

We normally prefer to travel on our own, but given the limited period of time we had available (~3 days dedicated to the Sahara Desert leg of our Marrakesh trip) and our hesitation in hiring/driving a car in Morocco, it was a question we debated for months.

In the end, we felt more comfortable hiring a guided tour. Let me tell you…it was worth it for the convenience, the ease-of-comfort, and value for money. Our guide managed everything for us – I mean EVERYTHING!

sahara travel kovin

The tour company picked us up from our riad in Marrakech, handled full transportation and gas, managed our itinerary, and made plenty of stops for photos and bathroom breaks. They were even thoughtful enough to plan for Western-style toilet stops, which are not easily found in the desert (something that hadn’t even crossed my mind until AFTER we arrived)). They handled accommodation every night, managed entry tickets to all of the sites, organized camel-riding, and took care of meals. The only major downside was that the provided meals and accommodation themselves were ‘mediocre’, so if these are a really big deal to you, then self-drive might be a better option.

If you are a bit nervous to travel to Morocco and your main purpose is to go and see the Sahara Desert, then I would definitely hire a guide. I can personally vouch for this tour (Sahara Tours 4×4) , in case you want to save yourself a few hours of research. 🙂 Not sponsored, this was really the guide we used.

sahara travel kovin

We opted for a private tour for the convenience. Our 3-day private tour cost the two of us 750 euros roundtrip. This included: (1) accommodation (including 1 night in a nomad tent), (2) transport/petrol with air-conditioned car and English speaking guide, (3) all meals, (4) camel-riding activity, and (5) entry into sites. Tip was not included  (the recommendation is to tip around 15%-20% of the total trip cost). You could probably get away with something much cheaper by planning a trip yourselves, but the convenience alone was worth the cost.

Yes and no. It was long enough to enjoy the experience we REALLY went for…which was riding camels out into the desert and enjoying a night camping among sand dunes. However, there was a LOT of driving (5-6 hours/day) involved, and it made for some pretty long and exhausting days. If you have the luxury of time, I’d recommend extending your trip to 5 days so that you are able have more downtime between stops.

Dunes of Erg Chebbi

TIP : If you don’t have 3 days to spare and still want to see sand dunes, there are also tour options that take you to Zagora, but the dunes won’t be as large or impressive as the larger dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga.

We were picked up from our riad in Marrakesh at 8am sharp. The guide was fluent in English, on-time, and very polite – he helped with our suitcases and made sure to find parking close to the riad. The first stop on our journey was a photo spot in the High Atlas Mountain, where we were able to admire the panoramic views for 10-15 minutes.

Atlas Mountains

From there, we hit up a local trading post where we were able to observe women from a local village produce Argan Oil. This was a nice bathroom stop, and even though we were not pressured to purchase anything, we ended up buying a small bottle of Argan Oil as a nice souvenir.

Palm trees in Morocco

The second main stop was the krsa (fortified village) of Ait Ben Haddou to visit the famous Kasbah. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a must-visit, and is included as a stop in most Sahara Desert tours from Marrakech. Several famous movies like The Mummy and the Gladiator were filmed here.

Ait Ben Haddou

From there, we continued onto Ouarzazate (also known as the ‘gate of the desert’), the Rose Valley and it’s large palm tree groves, ending at the Dades Valley which was our destination for the night. The Dades Valley is another ‘must-stop’ destination for any trip to the Sahara Desert. We stayed in the Hotel Babylon i n the Dades Valley (included dinner and breakfast) and although it wasn’t a 5-star hotel, it was lovely and clean. We were given some mint tea and biscuits during check-in. During dinner (which was a 3-course feast), the owners even put on a little music show!

sahara travel kovin

Day 2 was the highlight of our 3-day road trip visiting the Sahara Desert. We kicked off our morning by passing through the Todra Gorges, which is a series of limestone river canyons on the Eastern side of the Atlas Mountains. There are several hiking and rock climbing routes in the area, for those who are interested in making the Todra Gorges a full stop. It was here where stopped for a few minutes to stretch our legs, and explore the canyons a bit. We also ended up buying a small Moroccan rug from a street vendor, and successfully haggled the price down from $100 to $50 (‘successful’ being a loose term, our driver laughed at us and explained that he would’ve only payed $40…still.)

Todras Gorge

From there, we made our way to the Merzouga Dunes. Merzouga is a small village, and is known as the gateway to the Sahara. Our driver dropped us off at a home in Merzouga, where we were told to leave most of our belongings.  We were only permitted to bring a small duffle bag or backpack with us, since our journey into the sand dunes was via camel. It was also here where we met up with a few other travelers, and were told we’d be traveling as a larger group into the desert camp. After re-organizing our belongings, enjoying a short coffee and snack break, and learning how to wrap our head and necks properly with scarves (to protect our face from blowing sand)…we were off!

Camel riding in the Sahara

Each person in the group was assigned a camel, and our tour guide (who was from a local Berber tribe) was super helpful in getting us situated on top of the camels, and tying up our luggage. I was lucky enough to have a friendly female camel as my travel companion (I daresay she was also the PRETTIEST camel I’ve seen….Kevin and I decided her name was Jasmine).

Jasmine the Camel

The journey to the nomad camp was quite the adventure. I had imagined camel riding to be a romantic endeavor…but it was super awkward and bumpy. Don’t get me wrong…I still had a BLAST, and was giggling like a maniac through most of the journey….but I wish someone would’ve told me just how uncomfortable I would be!

Kevin with Jasmine Camel

TIP : Even if it’s really hot, I would recommend wearing long and loose pants for camel riding, with long socks underneath. It’ll prevent your legs and ankles from rubbing against the sides of the camel, and make for a more comfortable experience!

On top of sand dunes

After we arrived at the nomad camp, we were given some free time to run up and down the nearby sand dunes, and enjoy the sunset. This was, by far, the best part of our trip. It’s EXHAUSTING climbing up the dunes because you’re ankle-deep in sand, and your thighs are burning from the steep incline…but the views from the top are worth the effort.

Sunset in the Sahara Desert

There are really no words to describe how extraordinary of an experience it was to witness sunset in the middle of the Sahara Desert. We sat with our fingers buried in the sand, feeling tired and content, and our eyes mesmerized by the sun melting into the dunes in front of us. The sky was painted in shades of pink, orange, and red, and I remember feeling like my heart would burst from magic of it all.

Sunset in the Sahara Desert

After sunset, we made our way back to the camp, where we we feasted on chicken tagine – a hearty pot of slow-cooked chicken, vegetables, and rice. The meal was fabulous…especially considering that we were in the middle of the desert, and the service was top-notch. Afterwards, we sat around a campfire with the rest of our travel group, drinking mint tea and listening to the slow and steady beating of Berber drums, and exchanging stories under the stars.

Chicken tagine in the Sahara Desert

The sleeping arrangements in the camp exceeded my expectations. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised to find that we were able to sleep on actual beds in a small but sturdy private tent. There was even a working toilet and running water to wash our hands and brush our teeth. RUNNING WATER! I couldn’t believe it.

Sunrise in the Sahara Desert

We had an early morning wake-up call (5:00AM) the next morning, and made one last climb up sand dunes in the darkness so that we could be at the top in time for sunrise. After sunrise, we returned to the home in Merzouga, where our belongings were being stored, and were treated to a fantastic full breakfast spread and hot shower.

Draa Valley

Our drive back took us through the Draa Valley, where we stopped for lunch and were treated to sweeping views of palm trees lining the Draa River (the longest river in Morocco). We continued through Ouarzazate (a modern town famous for providing the exotic backdrops for many Hollywood blockbusters), with a few bathroom breaks along the way. The drive back was pretty uneventful (save for a flat tire…which our driver had fixed and replaced in a jiffy), and involved multiple ‘mini-naps’ in the back seat. After a long day of driving (6-7 hours), we were finally dropped off at our riad in Marrakech, concluding our side trip into the Sahara Desert.

Driving through Morocco

The best packing advice I can give you for visiting the Sahara Desert is this: Pack light, pack layers, and pack things that you aren’t afraid to get dirty! My tennis shoes were permanently ruined from running along sand dunes. Other things to consider include:

Essentials:

  • A change of clothes
  • Tennis shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty
  • Portable charger (for your phone, and your camera…as you WILL be taking a million photos)
  • Windbreaker (it gets cold at night)
  • Light scarf (for protecting your face from the sand and wind)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • An extra pair of socks
  • Basic toiletries in a small bag

Recommended:

  • A light blanket. Some sheets and a pillow will be provided at the camp, but it does get cold at night, so consider bringing a blanket for extra warmth!
  • Small flashlight
  • Travel first aid kit
  • Waterproof or ziplock bag for protecting your camera equipment when the weather gets rough
  • Battery-powered fan
  • Flip flops (for getting around the camp)

The Western Sahara, Where the Desert Reigns

Ad Dchira

Western Sahara, a Complicated and Divided Desert Land

By Max Globetrotter

Ahmad: my Saharawi Guide to “his desert”

Western Sahara may not, at first glance, seem to be worth fighting over, but such is the way of man. For reasons that range from simple territorial expansion to deep historical roots, to contemporary mineral wealth, the land has been tossed between external powers for centuries.

The origins, as usual, evolve from the Europeans’ delight in drawing lines on maps. The unsurveyed home of the Saharwi for generations became the host to Spanish forts and flags during the period of the slave trade.

These forts evolved to fishing communities and eventually, Madrid expanded their protectorate, Morocco, south to incorporate the Spanish Sahara. This continued until 1975 when Morocco occupied much of the territory with the remaining lands, mostly by the Algerian and Mauritanian borders, and are now controlled by the Saharwi people.

The dispute will continue, but for travelers, who stay mainly in the coastal regions, the country is a peaceful, safe and most interesting destination.

Lying between the desert and the ocean, to the north of Mauritania and to the south of the parts of Morocco that we know so well lies a rarely-visited, politically charged and quite mesmerizing country, Western Sahara.

Or, if one is in the eastern section of the region The Sarhawi Arab Democratic Republic , and in the west, simply Morocco .

A Bottle of Wine

In Western Sahara, a bottle of wine sitting invitingly on the table ( Lopez, Gran Riserva ) should have been sufficient warning.

Sadly, my little-traveled Orkney Islander companion failed to take precautions, and with a gusto that can only be described as euphoric nearly drank the hotel’s entire stock.

Camel Legs anyone? Camel meat for sale in Western Sahara.

It was a pleasant wine, its Spanish heritage playing lip service to this curious country’s historical heritage, but not worth the €55 per bottle that the inevitable bill disclosed.

Wine is always expensive in an Arabic country; more so in one that has its own wine industry, and although Western Sahara is not readily identified as “wine country,” Morocco, to which it is currently annexed, is; and a lesson learned in the desert.

So, protecting the grapes produced and perhaps partially the ambivalence shown to alcohol by Islam, imported wine is expensive. Always.

Western Sahara is a country of the desert: unrelenting, unforgiving and unmistakable desert. It is a terrain of undulating sands that stretch from the inland reaches of the Sahara to the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It is an ancient and difficult territory; inhospitable to outsiders, but home to the Saharawi , the ancient and modern inhabitants of this windswept and difficult country.

A Desert Country

Laayoune Western Sahara: the main road through the center.

Western Sahara could never be called jolly; it is carved from hardship. It is a country whose people have sought to nurture and sustain a culture, a religion and a way of life for centuries using only the sparse resources of these barren lands.

And they have succeeded.

Western Sahara is a not blessed with fertile soils, but with minerals that should sustain the economy that should sustain the distinctive cultural life of the 200,000 Saharawi who call The Desert home. It has phosphates and, of course, the potential of oil.

It is a land torn by a decades-old dispute, but a country that for visitors interested in learning of the desert and its life, offers a warm and positive welcome.

A Depth of Culture

I have been there twice. To that end, I can say that I have seen pretty much all that there is to see, but that belies the depth of culture and opportunity that I passed by. For visitors, the two cities of Laayoune and Dakhla are the primary centers.

A pharmacy in Laayoune Western Sahara.

Dakhla, located in the far south, near to the Mauritanian border is trying to cast itself as a resort, and more specifically a resort that caters to windsurfers.

It seems to be succeeding as more championships are held there, more hotels are being built and the infrastructure of a nascent tourism industry has taken root.

Apart, of course, from the price of Spanish wine.

The Spanish Connection

Spanish, because historically, Western Sahara has been under Spanish control or influence since Europeans started drawing lines on maps.

Tropic of Cancer in Western Sahara.

From the eighteenth century, Spain had taken advantage of the coast for commercial fishing, having previously operated a couple of forts during the time of the slave trade.

In 1884 when the infamous Berlin Conference drew lines all over the African map, to the considerable surprise of its inhabitants, the Spanish formally controlled Western Sahara; and continued to do so for nearly 100 years.

Today, the capital city of Laayoune is a major Moroccan garrison. It is an interesting two-day town that offers an interesting glimpse into the political make up of the country, and the results of pouring almost unlimited funds into a region presumably to impress the local population.

Twenty Km from the Sea

Laayoune Airport, Western Sahara.

Laayoune is inland. Lying some twenty kilometers or so from the ocean, it typifies the cities and communities of the Sahara. The original inhabitants, dating back 2000 years, had little interest in the sea. They were people of The Desert and comfortable with a nomadic life revolving around sand, camels, goats, and movement.

The sea was frightening and to be avoided at all costs. Communities, such as they were, developed inland, and only the development of Spanish fishing interests and the need for export ports started to develop coastal communities.

Although they try, beach resorts they are not; developed land adjacent to the sea they are.

From Laayoune to the Desert

From Laayoune, however, the real treat is to head to the desert. Many local guides are easily available through the hotels, and ready to drive you into the empty Sahara for an afternoon, a day or a week.

Their stories are captivating, their driving impeccable and the experience of being out in the bleak empty desert with someone who sees it as a rich, complex environment is unparalleled.

Laayoune is accessible; forty-five minutes from Las Palmas, which is, without doubt, a complete and absolute contrast. Casablanca lies ninety to the north by plane, or by a good road. Morocco is a large country.

From Ceuta in the north to the Mauritanian border is about 2,800 kilometers of decent, asphalt road with a variety of drivers barrelling their way down the highway, and half of which runs through this desert land.

A butcher shop in Laayoune.

A Unique Destination

Western Sahara is a unique destination. It is a country divided by a latent civil war, a country of barren wastes, a country of deeply rooted culture and religion.

It is a region of beauty and solitude, of sand and water and a land that introduces its fortunate visitors to The Sahara, and makes them realize how harsh life can be, and how decisions must be made.’

Every Couple Needs To Put A Trip To The Sahara On Their Travel Bucket List

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

Looking up at the starriest sky I had ever laid eyes on, lying between the sandy hills of the Sahara desert is a memory I’ll cherish forever.

Last October, my boyfriend and I took our first trip away together. Of course, being us, we decided to go all out and book something a little extravagant.

After seeing a few of our friends heading there with their mohs and misters, we decided to go to Morocco.

One thing that our friends and forums online kept stressing was that a trip to the Sahara (though an absolute TREK) was a must. We went online and booked the trip in advance with a company that was simply named ‘Camel Trekking Excursions’.

Now I will say, it was one of the pricier activities we’ve done together, coming in at €330 per person for a three-day trip, however, I think it was one of the best.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Boce35hHypD/

We were picked up in Marrakech on our first day by our driver Mohammad. The taxi was airy, comfy and spacious, which made the nine-hour drive ahead of us a bit more bearable.

(I’m not the best traveller and the roads were super windy, so I would deffo advise taking some Motillium if you’re the same.)

We stopped off at some sites including a Casba, a Berber clothes shop and a movie set; it was a little bit random but I was thankful to have a few minutes to stretch the legs and get some air. We eventually made it to the Dadas Valley where we stayed in a cool hotel, had dinner and some time to chill, which was well needed by that stage.

Alternatively, you can skip day one and do the trip over two days. For me, I was thankful to do three days because I find travelling quite difficult, so I needed the rest in between and I really wanted to fully enjoy the desert when we got there.

The trip also includes dinner and breakfast in both the Dadas Valley Hotel and the desert.

Day two is what we had been waiting for.

We were picked up and brought to the Sahara Desert, stopping off at a Nomad camp during the way for some mint tea.

Once we got to the Sahara, we were given headscarves and we were paired up with a camel. The camels belong to the Berber camp and seemed to be really well treated as they loved getting head rubs and were very happy during the trek. It was such an incredible experience riding a camel across the desert and looking out to the tangerine-coloured sandy hills – I’ve never seen anything like it.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bogln64nW5K/

We trekked during sunset and arrived at the camp just when it had gotten dark. We were brought to our room which was a lot more glam than I had anticipated – we had a double bed and a shower and lots of room for our bags.

We then headed into the dining area for some delicious food and even a bottle of wine, which we were BUZZING about because most restaurants in Morocco are alcohol-free. The food was delicious and the meal gave us time to bond with the other travellers on the trip.

The meal finished with live music from the Berber tribe and we all danced under the stars.

It was my boyfriend’s birthday so they brought him out a cake and sang happy birthday to him in Berber, safe to say it was the best birthday he’s had and they were the best hosts we could have hoped for.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BoY3w96Hp4G/

We finished the night lying on the beanbags looking up at the sky – I cannot stress to you how beautiful it was. I’ve never seen so many stars and we even saw a shooting star.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BolgRz4FvKK/

We headed to bed and got up super early to catch the sunrise over the Desert.

Just… wow!

After that, we tried our hand at a bit of sandboarding which was one of the coolest things I’ve tried, even though it’s really difficult.

I had a huge smile on my face for the entire trip and it’s probably the best excursion I’ve ever done – so many memories, incredible photos and a great story to tell.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BotiQVnnuCO/

If you’re looking to do something completely unique and unforgettable, I cannot recommend this trip more.

Literally one of the best things I’ve ever done and super romantic for couples.

Moroccan Desert Adventure: River Canyons & Camels

Great tour covering many aspects of Morocco (city bazaar shopping, camel riding in the desert, and mountain villages) in a short amount of time. Be prepared for lots of driving and minimal free time, I’d suggest spending a couple of days extra after the tour in a nice hotel for some relaxing. Overall I’d recommend it and it’s made me want to return and explore the other cities.

5 day trip: Sahara Fun Outdoor Experience Tour

5 day trip: Sahara Fun Outdoor Experience

This was an adventure of a lifetime! I can not BEGIN to express how well taken care of myself and my two friends were. How kind everyone was, how well planned the itinerary was, how nice all the accommodations were and how INCREDIBLE the activities are. The People: Our tour guide Mohammad was amazing. He always had a great attitude and went above and beyond to be accommodating. By the end of the tour we all had inside jokes with each-other that still make me laugh when I think of them. The accommodations: Every hotel we stayed at was great- safe and clean. I will say the food was a tad repetitive but I think that’s just cause they are all tourist hotels. I especially LOVED the place we stayed at on the Dunes. We had a perfect night. The staff was amazing, the food was super tasty, the campfire was so fun and the hotel grounds were picturesque. The activities: THESE ARE THE REASON TO CHOOSE THIS TOUR!!!!! Seriously, if rock climbing, hiking, riding a camel over the Dunes at Sunset, riding a four wheeler up the Dunes, off roading in a 4wheel drive car, and exploring historical sites sound fun to you … then this is the tour for you! Everyday I made a memory that will last a lifetime. Perfection! Balloon Tour: Another mind blowing experience and more fantastic memories and interactions with folks. I felt safe, and they went above and beyond to make sure we got the best experience possible. Lastly we were in Marrakesh when the Earthquake happen, it was the night our tour had ended and we were leaving the next day. Even in the face of a national disaster, they texted us to make sure we were ok and then still picked us up the next day at the preplanned time and took us to the airport safety and on time. Choose this tour, I am so grateful that I did.

3 Days High Atlas Mountains and Sahara Adventure Tour

3 Days High Atlas Mountains and Sahara Adventure

Quit reading reviews and book a trip with Joy Travel. You won’t regret it. Some quick advice/things to know: -If it’s not clear from the description , this is a small company and anything on the trip can be customized. Reach out and ask. -Ali is a perfectionist. He cares about the most minute details and will make this trip magical. Trust me. -If Ali is on another tour his communications may be slow. Be patient. -Fez is an ancient city where little has changed and few tourists. Marrakech is the opposite but still fun to visit. Out of the two I’d spend more time in Fez. -The luxury package is definitely worth it. -Ali and Hammin are brothers, I didn’t realize until the last day :) Both have big heats and will take great care of you. -Definitely stay in the desert. It will be your favorite night. Stay two nights if you can. -Wire transfers from US to Morocco aren’t instant. Ours took 10 days. It freaked me out at first.

Thank you for my time in Morocco. It was very good. All my tour leaders were excellent. 10-Day Kasbahs & Deserts of Morocco - Private tour

In November, 2022, my husband and I completed the 10 day Kasbah and Desert tour with Vacations to Go Travel. From the beginning, they were easy to communicate with and answered questions and sent info in a timely manner. While in Morocco, our tour guide and driver were excellent. They were prompt, knowledgeable and friendly and their understanding of English was great. The van was comfortable and the driver very professional. The overall itinerary was excellent and we were glad we extended our stay in Essaouira. Merzouga, Erg Chebbi and time in the desert were definitely highlights of the trip for us. Unfortunately, the hotel we stayed in the most each time we returned to Marrakech (El Alandrous) was the weak link. We found the hotel common areas to be fresh and well kept, but each of the four different rooms we stayed in were old, dirty, uncomfortable, loud and in need of general TLC. Otherwise, a wonderful trip and we would highly recommended.

Morocco Dune Buggy Adventure - Off Road & Wild Camps Tour

Morocco Dune Buggy Adventure - Off Road & Wild Camps

An outstanding 5-day dune buggy adventure with Sahara Riders! From the captivating landscapes of Morocco to the heart-pounding thrill of driving through the highest dunes in Merzouga, every moment was nothing short of exhilarating. The meticulous planning and expertise of the guides ensured a seamless journey, and their in-depth knowledge of the nomadic culture added a fascinating cultural dimension. The luxury desert camp under the stars was a highlight, offering a perfect blend of comfort and enchantment. Each day brought new landscapes, exciting buggy rides, and delicious local cuisine. Highly recommend this adventure for those seeking an unforgettable blend of adventure, culture, and luxury in the mesmerizing Moroccan desert.

Marrakech To Merzouga 3 days camel ride Tour

Marrakech To Merzouga 3 days camel ride

Me and my friends embarked on a private tour which turned out to be wholesome. Our driver, Abdul, met us in the morning with the greatest smile on his face and proved to be an amazing guide and friend. Abdel was also an incredible guide when he joined us at the canyon. They both explained us all about Morocco and were truly an added value to the tour. The stops were breathtaking, and the landscape got more beautiful at every turn. The camel ride was incredibly fun and entertaining, and the Sahara dunes were unreal. The stays were very comfortable, both the hotel and the camping, and dinner/breakfasts were excellent. I had mentioned that it was my birthday and the guys prepared me a birthday cake, singing and dancing around the campfire. That was an unbelievable surprise which I would have never expected and it really made the day even more special. I think this also shows how kind and thoughtful the whole team is and the care they put in organising this experience. The drive back was also enjoyable, as we made multiple stops and could once again appreciate the beauty of Moroccan landscapes. Overall, this was truly an unforgettable experience that we will always cherish. As Abdel would say, more than a tour, this was a road trip with friends

Two out of the 6 hotels were not up to standard, would have preferred better. Meals at most of the hotels barely average. I was expecting I would be joining an English speaking group. My wife and I was the only English persons. The tour company made up for it by giving us a separate driver and local guides at the attractions, however we never had a dedicated guide to accompany us like the rest of Tour group. We basically were on our own the entire tour. We missed out by not having the interaction with other Tour members . Southern part of Tour did not have as much to see and had too many days of long driving.

What people love about Sahara Desert Tours

It was an unforgettable tour and the amount of things we could see and do in only one week was unbelievable. Even though we spent a big part of the time driving, there were enough stops in between and I also got this strange feeling that time was passing more slowly on this trip, simply because we experienced so much. In the car, we could watch the scenery from the windows and people when driving through towns and villages. We could also take naps in the car, all in all it was a relaxing trip despite being full of adventure as well. Karim was a great guide, not least due to his humor and smiling. I also saw that he was good at dealing with different people within our group. He seemed to know almost everyone personally wherever we went, chatting briefly with people on our way. A few negatives though, a tiny part of the overall experience. We stopped 2-3 times shops for traditional handicraft (e.g. pottery) which I disliked as I'm not into shopping and found these stops too commercial. A stop at a place for making argan oil products was also too sales driven for my taste although I thought it was interesting to hear about the production process. Some of the women on the group bought something there, so they probably had a more positive view. There was also one stop at the end of the 4x4 excursion in the desert to listen to local music, which I think nobody particularly enjoyed. If you are going to Morocco for the first time, I would highly recommend this tour.
Loved every minute of the trip, such a beautiful country with the most amazing views, the trekking in the atlas mountains and quad in the Sahara was the best but an amazing experience, the host was such a nice friendly guy and could have a laugh, deffo a 10 out of 10 trip and would massively recommend going with this company and doing this trip if your looking at going to morroco
Ali was an incredible guide and I would thoroughly recommend booking with Morocco Joy Travel. We travelled with our 2 kids (8 &9) and Ali made it such a wonderful adventure for our family. He was so warm and kind, knowledgeable and thoughtful. We opted for the luxury accommodation and it surpassed our expectations. There was a lot of driving but the vehicle was very comfortable and Ali was so knowledgeable and a pleasure to tour with. We are left with wonderful memories of sunsets, fossil digging, sand dune exploring, camel riding, drum playing, spectacular scenery, delicious meals…thank you Ali…we cannot wait to visit again!
