Star Trek: The Captain's Table

  • View history

In 2005, Pocket Books revisited the Captain's Table with an anthology Tales from the Captain's Table , featuring the captains who'd been added to the Trek pantheon in the years since the original miniseries: Jonathan Archer ( Enterprise ), William T. Riker ( Titan ), Kira Nerys ( Deep Space Nine ), Chakotay ( Voyager ), Elizabeth Shelby ( Star Trek: New Frontier ), David Gold ( Star Trek: SCE ), Klag , son of M'Raq ( Star Trek: IKS Gorkon ), and Demora Sulu ( Star Trek: The Lost Era ), plus a story of Jean-Luc Picard and the Stargazer .

Premise [ ]

The Captain's Table is a mysterious bar, run by a being known only as "Cap". Only captains (or people who were at a time acting captains) are entitled to enter the establishment. Traditionally, new captains are brought to the bar by their friends or former commanding officers; Captain Picard introduced Captain Riker upon his promotion.

The bar appears to exist in another dimension because its door can appear anywhere around the galaxy , and it is visible only to captains. This is corroborated by the fact that the bar door could not be seen by Tom Paris when he was on an away mission with Captain Janeway ; it appeared to the young M'k'n'zy on the planet Xenex, and even to Captain E.J. Smith of the RMS Titanic while aboard his vessel.

Drinks in the bar are provided free of any monetary charge; the "payment" required by the proprietor is for the captain to tell a story to the rest of the patrons. This story does not necessarily have to be about the captain, nor does it have to be true; Captain Archer entertained the bar with a suspense-filled (and, from the perspective of the reader, plainly false) tale of his first meeting with "Porthos the Great", portraying the beagle as a famous spy-dog.

Thus, the Captain's Table novels are a collection of short stories, each told by a captain or commander from Trek lore, bookended by short sequences taking place inside the Captain's Table bar.

The author of each book can be seen as a background character in the cover art.

Faction Cross-faction

The Captain's Table is an in-game area located just outside of Earth Spacedock or Qo'noS , reached by entering the Aenigma Nebula . It is a nightclub and social venue with an exclusive clientele: Lifetime Subscribers , and 400-day Veterans.

The Captain's Table is neutral ground, with no fighting of any kind allowed. This means that both Federation-aligned and Klingon-aligned players can visit and intermingle.

Time has no meaning here, which is most likely due to temporal anomalies present within the Aenigma Nebula . This has allowed some of the greatest captains in history to visit, from Jonathan Archer to Kathryn Janeway (in Trek lore, not in-game).

Customer Reviews

A collection of first drafts.

This looks like it would be a great collection of stories spanning the ST franchise, but the reality is disappointing. Nearly all the stories read more like hastily written first drafts that could use significant editing and rewrites. I found myself starting to skim more and more just to follow the general story, skipping over page after page of banal dialogue or tedious introspection. I didn't even finish some. Very disappointing.

STAR TREK: THE CAPTAIN’S TABLE: Revisiting Beta Canon’s Funnest Stories

STAR TREK: THE CAPTAIN’S TABLE: Revisiting Beta Canon’s Funnest Stories

In addition to the official canon, Star Trek has a robust “Beta Canon.” These stories, mostly prose, video games and comics, tell exciting stories about familiar characters. However, they are not considered “canon” like Star Trek episodes or movies. In recent years, shows like  Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Prodigy and  Star Trek: Picard have taken elements from Beta Canon and made them into regular canon.

Crossing the canonical divide may be cool. Nevertheless, some Star Trek beta canon stories may be too quirky for canon. For this week’s Trek Tuesday , we’re celebrating one of these tales: The Captain’s Table .

The Captain’s Table

The concept of  The Captain’s Table is by John J. Ordover and Dean Wesley Smith. Here’s the premise: The Captain’s Table is a bar outside time and space. The only people who are admitted into this bar are captains. They do not need to be Starfleet captains, either. However, the main storyline of the series’ six novels does focuses on the Federation’s finest.

Star Trek: The Captain's Table omnibus featuring a portrait of five familiar Starfleet caps at a bar table: Sulu, Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway.

Because the bar exists outside of time and space, captains from throughout history can meet one another within its walls. For this reason, the six novels focus on different characters from throughout Star Trek ‘s history. Naturally, this only includes canon established when the series was published in the late 1990s.

Any captain can enter the Captain’s Table. However, the currency the bar accepts in exchange for a drink is not gold-pressed latinum. Instead, any captain who wishes to enjoy a drink at the Captain’s Table must share a story from their personal history.

Six Captains

The original 1998 series of The Captain’s Table features six novels. Each of these focuses on a captain from a different  Star Trek series. All six include an interconnected “frame story.” This frame follows the spotlighted Starfleet captain as they enter the bar known as the Captain’s Table. This entry is often thanks to being shown the establishment’s door by an already-initiated captain. These frame sections are presented in the third person.

But when the spotlighted caps tell their personal tales, the prose is first-person. This allows each captain to tell a story in their own words. For this reason, the authors of each volume are credited on the cover as having “recorded” the stories.

The first novel,  Star Trek: The Captain’s Table: War Dragons is written by L.A. Graf and features Captains James T. Kirk and Hikaru Sulu from Star Trek: The Original Series . The second,  Dujonian’s Hoard  by Michael Jan Friedman , focuses on Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation .

RELATED:  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds : You’re Invited to the Captain’s Table

Next is  The Mist  by Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch, featuring Captain Benjamin Sisko from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . The fourth volume,  Fire Ship  by Diane Carey, features Captain Kathryn Janeway from  Star Trek: Voyager .

The six Star Trek: Captain's Table novels, each one spotlighting one (or two) Starfleet Caps.

The penultimate book, Once Burned  by Peter David , features Captain Mackenzie Calhoun from the  Star Trek: New Frontier prose book series. The final book, Where Sea Meets Sky by Jerry Oltion, spotlights Captain Christopher Pike. When the book was written, Pike had only appeared in the original  TOS pilot, “The Cage,” and the  TOS season 1 2-part episode, “The Menagerie.” However, Pike has since become a protagonist in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

Nine More Tales

In 2005, the concept of the Captain’s Table was revived for a collection of nine short stories. These are collected in  Star Trek: Tales from the Captain’s Table , edited by Keith R.A. DeCandido . Like the six novels that preceded them, they feature an interconnected third-person frame that holds first-person stories. Furthermore, eight of the nine stories spotlight new captains. This allows for the inclusion of  Star Trek: Enterprise continuity, as well as putting a spotlight on some previously omitted captains.

RELATED:  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds : 5 Books for Gorn Expertise

Tales from the Star Trek: Captain's Table cover featuring portraits of the nine featured Caps.

The collection spotlights Captain Jonathan Archer in a story by Louisa Swann. Captain Chakotay appears in a story by Christie Golden . Captain David Gold appears in a story by series co-creator Ordover. Captain Kira Nerys gets a story by Heather Jarman, while Captain Klag, son of M’Raq, is featured in a tale by editor DeCandido.

There is another story about Picard by series alum Friedman. There’s also a story about Captain William T. Riker by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels. Captain Elizabeth Shelby gets a story by series alum David (which is nice since her appearance in Picard season 3’s “ Võx ” didn’t go so well). Finally, Captain Demora Sulu stars in a story by David R. George III.

More From the Captain’s Table?

It makes sense for the original six novels to focus on Starfleet’s biggest stars, like Sulu, Picard, Sisko and Janeway. But Tales from the Captain’s Table  allows for the inclusion of some unexpected protagonists. This allows the additional characters to enjoy more time in the spotlight and share stories from their own personal experiences. Furthermore, the frame story allows for an intimate and enjoyable atmosphere. You almost feel like you are enjoying a drink alongside the Star Trek captains.

All seven of these books are worth seeking out. Better yet, the six novels are not too hard to find used.

However, with a new wave of Star Trek shows, perhaps it’s time for this series to be revived. Star Trek: Discovery features captains aplenty, including Captains Michael Burnham, Saru, and Philippa Georgiou . Lower Decks introduces Captain Carol Freeman (and reintroduces Captain Sonya Gomez, who has been promoted in the years since her appearances on  TNG ). Picard season 3 introduces Captain Liam Shaw (and later the promotion of Captain Seven of Nine ). And, of course, Prodigy features Captain Dal R’El, who will reach Federation legal drinking age in just a few short seasons.

Fred Tatasciore as Lieutenant Shaxs, Jerry O'Connell as Commander, Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman and Gillian Vigman as Dr. T'Ana. They are all seated around the Cap's Table on the Cerritos.

Each of these characters could share some fascinating tales. Furthermore, seeing them interact with some of the other classic captains in the bar would be exciting. But in the meantime, all seven books in The Captain’s Table series are worth revisiting (or reading for the first time).

BOOK REVIEW: Star Trek: The Captain’s Table

star trek captain's table

  • An Omnibus of Six Novels
  • Published by Pocket Books in 2000
  • Space Opera Adventures

In a way, this book brings me full circle. It’s one of the first Star trek books I can remember reading. Way back before I even knew what blogging was, I have dim memories of reading this mammoth tome on the way to a chess tournament. I remember broad strokes about some of the stories, but none of the details. Since that initial reading, I’ve watched my way through every Star trek TV show except The Original Series. I’ve also dived headlong into the Litverse, which was slowly forming when these stories were first written in the late 1990s The first time I read The Captain’s Table , I was mesmerised by the variety of the stories within. Coming back a decade and a half later, and I have a somewhat different experience to share with you.

The central conceit behind these stories is that there exists a unique drinking establishment which may only be accessed by those who hold the rank of captain. Once inside, patrons are encouraged to tell a story. As a result, we get a first hand account of some adventure from each of the major Star Trek captains up until the point the stories were written (alas, no Archer) as well as a few surprise guests. As each of the stories stands perfectly well on its own, I’ll tackle them individually in brief.

War Dragons , by L. A. Graf

The opening story is the weakest, a rough way to open but at least it’s out of the way quickly. This one suffers a lot from having too many perspectives thrown into under two hundred pages. The story is told jointly by Sulu and Kirk, with them being together in the present, but telling accounts from different periods of their life. It all gets a bit jumbled up, with neither tale being long enough to stand alone, but not enough connecting them until the very end.

Dujonian’s Hoard , by Michael Jan Freidman

A much more straightforward offering, this one sees Picard and Worf going undercover among a crew of ne’er-do-wells. It brings to mind the two-parter ‘Gambit’ in a lot of ways, and succeeds in being a fun and simple adventure. Weaving together the Cardassian-Maquis conflict, an ancient treasure, and the seedier underbelly of Trek’s generally optimistic future, Dujonian’s Hoard is a refreshing break for the usually very proper Picard.

The Mist , by Dean Wesley Smith & Kristine Kathryn Rusch

This story falls prey to a common issue I have with books set within the timeline of the series they tie into, aggravated by Deep Space Nine’ s more involved storytelling. It’s clear from the outset that Sisko won’t uncover any galaxy-shattering technology, or we’d already know about it. The constant interruptions by other characters within the framing narrative doesn’t help either, although the actual story is quite engaging.

Fire Ship , by Diane Carey

Cutting Janeway away from the rest of her crew, this one is the hardest to fit into the conceit of the Captain’s Table. But once you move past a few leaps in logic, the story itself is very strong. Here we see Janeway forced into service on alien vessel, having to work her way back up through the ranks. Bonus points must also be awarded for the Menace, who are one of the more interesting one-off alien in literary Trek, and a pleasant break from the usual warmongering ‘evil’ villains we see in this sort of story.

Once Burned , by Peter David

Featuring literary original captain Mackenzie Calhoun, this one succeeds in making me want to read the rest of the New Frontier series. It’s a fair bit more mature than Star Trek tended to go at the time, both in content and in tone. As an origin story of sorts, it works as a great introduction to Calhoun’s character, while also serving as a cautionary reminder that not all Starfleet captains are as noble as the ones we know and love.

Where Sea Meets Sky , by Jerry Oltion

Before Anson Mount stepped foot aboard Discovery , there was another version of Christopher Pike. That’s the version written about here, though impressively it fits very well with Mount’s version of the character. Especially as he pauses his story to share pizza with a Klingon. Pike aside, this is a wonderful little story about space-faring creatures and macro-scale ecosystems. The story is by the numbers, but the imagery is truly great. The only stumble is the final chapter, which brings the whole omnibus full circle in a way that only re-treads old ground.

Overall, The Captain’s Table is as mixed a bag as any multi-author, multi-era series is going to be. At its best it’s a whole load of fun, and probably best served in more digestible single volumes.

A … Chess tournament?

Also I wonder if that’s the same Peter David that wrote Sir Apropos, it probably has to be 🤣

I believe it is the same Peter David, yes.

And true to my nerd image, I used to play competitive chess at a national level. Sixth best under 18 in Wales at one point.

As we set course for the uncharted regions of The Captain's Table,  Batch #3 beams aboard an illustrious 8-Year-Old Bourbon , expertly crafted by Distillery Master Crispin Cain. Sensors detect on the nose malted grains, clove, vanilla, and candied orange peel. Initiating tasting protocols, we engage with butterscotch, caramel, toffee, fudge, vanilla, demerara, walnuts, toasted oak, and baking spices, endowing the Bourbon with a refined & unmistakable essence. The journey's end unveils flavors of malt, vanilla, toasted grains, butter, and toffee.

Astoundingly smooth, it imprints an enduring mark upon the taste receptors. Stowed in new American oak (Quercus Alba, ignited to the third degree) from Kentucky for six solar cycles, with additional time in a repurposed Cabernet cask. This whiskey achieves a harmonious equilibrium at 46.1% ABV.

Romulan Ale Rye Whiskey

"ROMULAN ALE? WHY BONES, YOU KNOW THIS IS ILLEGAL"

We started with ultra-premium Rye Whiskey. It is a mash bill of 95% Rye and 5% Malted Barley, giving a sweetness and flavor complexity after aging in newly charred White Oak Barrels. After aging for 2+ years just across the Ohio River from Kentucky, it was ready for bottling. But we took it a step further with a second distilling process, creating an ultra-smooth finish.  We opted for a rare and technologically advanced vacuum distillation process, which creates lower temperatures, enhancing both flavor and aromatics.
