Star trek's 10 best monster episodes.

Star Trek teaches us not to judge by appearances, but on the other hand it has provided us with multiple scary monsters for almost 60 years.

  • Star Trek embraces peace but also explores monster movie elements for some thrilling episodes.
  • Shows like Voyager & Next Generation weave classic monster movie themes with sci-fi twists.
  • Even as monsters take center stage, empathy remains a core theme in the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek has a message of peace and tolerance and seeing beyond the surface, but it's not above doing an all-out monster movie from time to time. From its inception in 1966, Star Trek has taught audiences not to judge alien species by appearances . For example, Star Trek: Voyager villains Species 8472 were terrifying, Alien -inspired creatures, who turned out to be benevolent aliens that had been driven to violence by the actions of the Borg Collective. Earlier episodes like Star Trek: The Original Series ' "Devil in the Dark" revealed hidden emotional depths to a creature that was ostensibly a disgusting rock monster.

Despite Star Trek 's message of empathy, sometimes the writers can't resist creating scary monsters and super creeps. Star Trek has always drawn on the history of science fiction, and the big monster movies popularized by studios like RKO are no exception . Over nearly six decades, Star Trek TV shows have drawn on classic monster movies like The Thing From Another World and King Kong , giving them a Gene Roddenberry-style twist.

10 Times Star Trek Went Full-On Horror And Gave Us Nightmares

10 star trek: voyager, season 2, episode 15, "threshold", story by michael de luca, teleplay by brannon braga.

Star Trek: Voyager 's notorious salamander episode , "Threshold" begins as an exploration of theoretical transwarp barriers and becomes something more akin to The Phantom of the Opera or King Kong . When Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) breaks the transwarp barrier, he begins experiencing some bizarre side effects. Breaking the transwarp barrier has triggered a strange evolution in Paris' body, which turns him into a salamander, who decides they need a mate in the form of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew).

...the monster movie elements ensure that "Threshold" is never boring.

There are some obvious monster movie parallels in "Threshold", from the way that the reptilian Paris carries an unconscious Janeway like the Phantom of the Opera to the body horror of the Voyager helmsman's transformation. The climax of the notorious Star Trek: Voyager episode, in which the "monster" that is now Paris fights off the crew to take Janeway as his mate, is pure King Kong . It's a Voyager episode that is rightly panned for its lack of narrative cohesion, but the monster movie elements ensure that "Threshold" is never boring.

9 Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 7, Episode 19, "Genesis"

Written by brannon braga.

Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7, episode 19, "Genesis" is essentially The Island of Dr. Moreau set aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) return to the Enterprise to discover that the crew has devolved into various terrifying monsters. For example, Lt. Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz) is de-evolved into a spider-like creature, while Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) devolves into a savage proto-Klingon that tries to kill Picard. The cause of these transformations is a mistake made by Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) while reactivating a cell that would have given Barclay immunity to the flu.

Gates McFadden injects what could have been a very silly story with genuine tension.

Although the science is just as dubious as Star Trek: Voyager 's "Threshold", Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7, episode 19, "Genesis" has the benefit of being much more atmospheric. Interestingly, "Genesis" was directed by Dr. Beverly Crusher actor Gates McFadden , who injects what could have been a very silly story with genuine tension. The climax, where Picard tries to fend off an attack from a prehistoric Worf, while Data tries to concoct a cure using the DNA of Nurse Ogawa's unborn baby, is well directed by McFadden, giving this daft TNG outing an exciting monster movie vibe.

"Genesis" was the only episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation to be directed by Gates McFadden.

Star Trek: Every Actor Who Also Directed Episodes Or Movies

8 star trek: the original series, season 1, episode 26, "the devil in the dark", written by gene l. coon.

"The Devil in the Dark" is a classic Star Trek monster episode , because it hinges on Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Lt. Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley) learning to understand a creature beyond their understanding. Investigating a supposed monster that is attacking a mining operation on Janus IV, they soon discover that the titular " devil in the dark " is no monster, but a mother protecting their young. It's thanks to Kirk and Spock's open-mindedness that the miners manage to avert the destruction of the entire Horta race .

The scene in which Kirk has to reason with the baying mob invokes images of the villagers with torches and pitchforks in the climax of Universal's classic monster movie, Frankenstein .

From a visual effects perspective, the actual Horta in Star Trek: The Original Series may look hokey by today's standards , but it tells a story about the need for empathy. TOS' cave monster isn't able to communicate with the miners, and so has to resort to violence. Similarly, the miners want violent recriminations from the "monster" that killed their colleagues. The scene in which Kirk has to reason with the baying mob invokes images of the villagers with torches and pitchforks in the climax of Universal's classic monster movie, Frankenstein . Thanks to Kirk, however, the Horta has a happier ending than Frankenstein's monster.

7 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Season 2, Episode 12, "The Alternate"

Teleplay by bill dial, story by jim trombetti and bill dial.

In one of Constable Odo's best Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes , a mysterious monster stalks the corridors of DS9 late at night. It's believed to be the mysterious sample that Odo (Rene Auberjonois) and scientist Dr. Mora Pol (James Sloyan) brought back from the Gamma Quadrant. However, in reality, it's Odo, who is under the influence of mysterious alien toxins, and the stress of seeing his "father" again. "The Alternate" is a fun Star Trek spin on Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde , that has some genuinely unnerving moments of horror.

Odo's monstrous alter-ego is less Mr. Hyde, and more like the titular Blob from the classic 1958 sci-fi monster movie.

Odo's transition into the monster toward the end of the episode is horrifying to watch as he rants and raves while struggling to remain in a solid state. Odo's monstrous alter-ego is less Mr. Hyde, and more like the titular Blob from the classic 1958 sci-fi monster movie. Interestingly, Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) doesn't categorically confirm it's the alien toxins that caused the transformation, suggesting another cause. As the gelatinous monster bears down on Dr. Mora Pol, it becomes clear that the real cause of the transformation is Odo's father issues.

All 4 Star Trek Characters Played By James Sloyan

6 star trek: voyager, season 3, episode 12, "macrocosm".

Star Trek: Voyager has many creepy episodes , but "Macrocosm" is the most overt monster episode. Like Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "Genesis", also written by Brannon Braga, "Macrocosm" has a silly concept that is realized like a survival horror movie. The monsters faced by Captain Janeway and the Doctor (Robert Picardo) are effectively giant viruses that become airborne, infecting those they come into contact with. To repel the viral infection of the USS Voyager, the Doctor created an antigen which Janeway eventually detonated inside the holodeck, killing the assembled macroviruses.

"Macrocosm" finally gave Captain Janeway her Ellen Ripley moment.

"Macrocosm" got a wryly funny sequel in Star Trek: Lower Decks ' season 4 premiere, "Twovixed", but the episode itself is a decent homage to the Alien franchise. As the Star Trek franchise's first female captain, it's great to see Janeway getting to be an action hero like Captain Kirk in Star Trek: The Original Series , or Picard in Star Trek: First Contact . While the monsters themselves weren't anywhere near as terrifying as Alien 's Xenomorph, "Macrosm" finally gave Captain Janeway her Ellen Ripley moment.

5 Star Trek: Discovery, Season 1, Episode 3, "Context is for Kings"

Teleplay by gretchen j. berg, aaron harberts, and craig sweeny.

The disgraced Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is given a second chance after her mutiny aboard the USS Shenzhou in a Star Trek: Discovery monster episode. "Context is for Kings" explores what happened to the USS Glenn, the second of Discovery 's crossfield-class starships . Following a catastrophic accident while experimenting with spore drive technology, the ship's entire crew were killed, save for the tartigrade creature they had captured and wired to the spore drive. Freed from its shackles by the accident, the creature rampaged through the Glenn, killing a Klingon boarding party and turning its attention to Burnham and her away team .

The true monster in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, episode 3, "Context is for Kings" is Starfleet themselves.

The true monster in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, episode 3, "Context is for Kings" is Starfleet themselves. The cruelty that the crew of the USS Glenn had shown to the tartigrade was unbecoming of Starfleet, and showed how far they were willing to diverge from their principles to defeat the Klingon Empire . Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) hammers this point home by having the tartigrade brought aboard the USS Discovery, taunting it as it tries to break free from the forcefield.

Jason Isaacs’ 10 Best Acting Roles (Including Star Trek: Discovery’s Lorca)

4 star trek: lower decks, season 4, episode 2, "i have no bones yet i must flee", written by aaron burdette.

Star Trek: Lower Decks introduced Moopsy into the canon in the season 4 episode, "I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee". Visiting an alien menagerie, newly promoted Lt. junior grade Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O'Connell) had to conted with Moopsy, a soft fluffy creature that also happened to drink bones . Mariner and Ransom came up with a suitably irreverent Lower Decks solution to their problem, by punching out Ransom's teeth and using them as treats to lure the Moopsy back into its cage.

Moopsy is basically a monstrous Tribble, unable to control its base urges.

Moopsy was the sort of creation that could only feature in the irreverent world of Star Trek: Lower Decks , and yet it plays on existing creatures in the canon. Moopsy is basically a monstrous Tribble, unable to control its base urges. However, Mariner and Ransom don't kill the creature to save themselves, they find a humane - if slightly painful - solution to their situation. Not only that, but Mariner also unmasks the truly dangerous monsters - greedy humans seeking to bulk up their business portfolios , in this case by staging a hostile takeover of an alien menagerie.

3 Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Season 1, Episode 9, "All Those Who Wander"

Written by davy perez.

"All Those Who Wander" combines the classic Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Arena" with Alien to provide a terrifying episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . The vicious Gorn babies that are encountered by the Enterprise away team are relentless, rampaging through the ship and killing everything in their path. It's through the noble sacrifice of Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak) that the away team is able to get back to the safety of the USS Enterprise. However, the scars of the terrifying encounter between the Enterprise and the Gorn carry over into Strange New Worlds season 2 .

The Gorn infants move like raptors, drawing comparisons with the climax of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park

Because there's genuine dramatic stakes and a cost to life, Star Trek: Strange New World 's Gorn survival horror movie is the best version of the subgenre after the classic movie, Star Trek: First Contact . As an hour of television, it wears its genre influences on its sleeve, particularly the similarities between the icy crash site with the colony in Aliens . However, it's not just the Alien franchise that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds riffs on in "All Those Who Wander". The Gorn infants move like raptors, drawing comparisons with the climax of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park .

Complete History Of The Gorn In Star Trek

2 star trek: the next generation, season 1, episode 23, "skin of evil", teleplay by joseph stefano & hannah louise shearer.

Armus (Ron Gans) in Star Trek: The Next Generation , is a truly monstrous creation, and even refers to himself as " evil " . Unlike the Horta in Star Trek: The Original Series , Armus isn't attacking the Enterprise away team to protect its children, he's doing it because he's a monster. A black, oily mass of everything impure and evil rejected by a " race of Titans ", Armus was abandoned on the planet Vagra II . There, he fantasized about torturing any visitors to the planet, but he quickly got bored after killing Lt. Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby).

Tasha Yar was no red shirt, and her death at the hands of the monster of the week makes "Skin of Evil" an impactful entry in the TNG canon.

"Skin of Evil" is one of Star Trek 's best monster episodes because, like "All Those Who Wander", it takes a toll on the characters. Star Trek: The Next Generation loses Tasha Yar to this monster, which proved that it would be a very different show to Star Trek: The Original Series . A TOS version of "Skin of Evil" would have played out in a similar fashion, but with the deaths of some disposable red shirts thrown in . Tasha Yar was no red shirt, and her death at the hands of the monster of the week makes "Skin of Evil" an impactful entry in the TNG canon.

1 Star Trek: The Original Series, Season 1, Episode 5, "The Man Trap"

Written by george clayton johnson.

Star Trek 's best monster episode is also its very first, setting the tone for those that would follow . Star Trek: The Original Series , season 1, episode 5, "The Man Trap", features a Salt Vampire that feeds on salt, which can also shapeshift to take the form of anyone that can help it achieve its goals. In essence, "The Man Trap" is Star Trek 's take on the 1951 movie The Thing From Another World , later remade by John Carpenter as The Thing . Both the Star Trek episode and the Thing movies center on a shapeshifting creature that feeds on the human characters.

"The Man Trap" was chosen by the network as the first episode of Star Trek: The Original Series to air due, in part, to its strong monster-of-the-week.

Both iterations of The Thing and Star Trek: TOS season 1, episode 5, "The Man Trap" also play on paranoia and being unable to trust your own eyes . In "The Man Trap", the Salt Vampire has the ability to take the form of the woman most desirable to each of the male characters. For example, Dr. McCoy believes it to be his former lover, Nancy, driving a wedge between him, Kirk and Spock. "The Man Trap" was chosen as the first episode of Star Trek: TOS to air in 1966, and its influence can be felt in Star Trek 's monster episodes nearly 60 years later.

All these episodes of Star Trek are available to stream on Paramount+.

The Complete History of Vulcans In the Federation Era of Star Trek

While the Vulcans are an ancient society in Star Trek, their history has been intrinsically tied with Starfleet and the Federation for millennia.

Quick Links

Vulcan troubles with starfleet and the federation in the 23rd century, 24th century vulcans were integrated into federation society, ambassador spock and romulan reunification, vulcan reunification with the romulans and leaving the federation.

There is no alien species more closely associated with the history of Star Trek and the Federation than the Vulcans. Originally created by Gene Roddenberry via the character of Spock, countless writers, producers and actors have contributed to the history and culture of the signature Star Trek aliens. However, despite being one of humanity's first alien allies, the Vulcans have kept their distance from humans and the Federation just the same.In order to keep Spock unique, Roddenberry instructed writers to keep the rest of Vulcan society at a cosmic arm's length from Starfleet.

When picking through the Star Trek: Phase II leftovers for TNG , he wanted the next generation of his universe to avoid Vulcans, along with most elements from the previous show. To that end, Star Trek didn't have a regular Vulcan character until Tuvok appeared in Star Trek: Voyager , nearly 30 years after The Original Series debuted. While Vulcans and humanity worked closely in Star Trek: Enterprise , their relationship was as adversarial as it was friendly. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has introduced a handful of Vulcan characters, but only one was in Starfleet. Given the prominence of Vulcans in the Star Trek franchise, it's worth examining the history Vulcans in the time of Star Trek 's Federation.

Star Trek's Lost Vulcan: Phase II Almost Replaced Spock With This Character

While closely involved with the creation of the Federation, specifically through Commander T'Pol, the Vulcans continued to do their own exploration missions. At some point in the 23rd Century, for example, a Vulcan science vessel was destroyed in the Hanoli system trying to close a rupture in subspace. They did not seek help from Starfleet. In fact, in most timelines, Spock's decision to join Starfleet instead of the Vulcan Science Academy was controversial. Not the least of which, it caused him and his father to become estranged until the Federation conference on Babel in 2268.

This is perhaps because for much of the early 23rd Century, Vulcans endured some infighting about their role in the multicultural society. Spock's father Sarek may not have wanted his son to join Starfleet, but he did want to foster better relations with humanity. Along with marrying Amanda Grayson, he adopted Michael Burnham after her parents were killed. Sometime before the 2250s, Vulcan "logic extremists" tried to kill Burnham in a bombing at the Vulcan Learning Center. Later, they tried to assassinate Sarek himself. They even recruited Starfleet Admiral Patar into their ranks and philosophy, after he became disillusioned with the organization during the Federation-Klingon War.

In the late 23rd Century, Vulcans in Starfleet were more common, but they often served together on their own vessels. One such all-Vulcan crew served on the USS Intrepid and were killed by a microorganism that consumed organic life to replenish itself. Yet, Vulcans were still private people, with things like the pon-farr not even appearing in Federation medical records. Spock, however, stayed in the Federation's service and even helped negotiate the Khitomer Accords with the Klingons, bringing peace after decades of hot and cold war.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country's Original Villain Was Heartbreaking

As has become a theme throughout each era of Vulcan history on Star Trek , there were some elements in the culture who wanted to step back from their role. I n the late 2360s, Captain Picard and Commander Riker were captured by pirates who were a part of this movement, hoping to use a telepathic weapon to force the Vulcans out of the Federation. They foiled this plan, and the Vulcans agreed to root out this movement, but wanted to keep it a private matter, at least within their own society.

Perhaps inspired by Spock's example, the Vulcans of the 24th Century played a significant role in the Federation, despite not many appearing on the screen. Vulcans lived by the motto "We're here to serve," specifically the galaxy. A number of Vulcans joined the Admiralty, with Savar, Sitak and T'Lara all appearing in both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Still involved with the Federation was Spock's father, Sarek, who traveled on the USS Enterprise and mind-melded with Picard.

Despite all this progress, Vulcans still often served on ships that were only crewed by their kind. The USS T'Kumbra, for instance, was an all-Vulcan vessel that liked to challenge human Starfleet colleagues (especially Captain Sisko) to baseball games. Still, the disillusionment with the Federation and Starfleet wasn't limited to just Vulcan purists. When the Maquis group formed to fight Cardassians without the approval of Starfleet, a number of Vulcans were involved in it. The most notable was Sarkonna, who inadvertently orchestrated the potential for a peaceful settlement after Quark explained the "economics of war" to her.

The Star Trek Backrub That Launched Spock and Kirk Shippers, Explained

While Spock was still active, he resigned from Starfleet and retired to Romulus. There, he worked undercover to begin the process of introducing the teachings of Surak to their galactic cousins. This led to an invasion of Vulcan by Romulus, thwarted at the last minute by the ingenuity of Spock and Data working together. The USS Enterprise-D was dispatched to discover what he was doing on Romulus, specifically out of fear that he defected.

At this time, Sarek was succumbing to an affliction causing older Vulcans to suffer outbursts of emotion. This was described as Vulcan senility, and he asked Captain Picard to find his son. While Spock was unable to see his father again , he did mind-meld with Picard. Since Picard mind-melded with Sarek once before, Spock was able to share some of his father's thoughts. Spock decided to stay on Romulus to continue preaching logic and reunification, happy that this would be his final contribution to greater galactic peace.

However, Spock failed Romulus when he didn't stop the explosion of a star that destroyed the Romulan homeworld. A mining vessel constructed out of Borg technology called the Narada traveled back in time and destroyed the planet Vulcan in the 23rd Century. This created a branch timeline, which was depicted in the Star Trek movies of the 2010s. Ambassador Spock remained in this timeline and died of natural causes.

Strange New Worlds: One Vulcan Can Help Spock on His Emotional Journey

In the 32nd Century, the galaxy reeled from "the Burn," an incident that destroyed dilithium used for warp travel. This caused many founding species, including Vulcans and humans, to leave the Federation behind. At the same time, the effort of Romulan reunification begun by Spock was successful after the destruction of the Romulan homeworld.

Planet Vulcan was renamed Ni'Var and while Vulcans and Romulans retained their original species identities, they formed a collaborative society. When Michael Burnham -- once a source of ire among Vulcans -- visited Ni'Var in the 32nd Century, she helped set them on a course to rejoin the Federation and Starfleet. However, it was a lengthy political process.

There are still elements in the Vulcan and Romulan societies who distrust the Federation. Vulcan purists threaten the renewed alliance, and they are political rivals of President T'Rina. Her relationship with Captain Saru (a Kelpian and Starfleet officer)

The Star Trek universe encompasses multiple series, each offering a unique lens through which to experience the wonders and perils of space travel. Join Captain Kirk and his crew on the Original Series' voyages of discovery, encounter the utopian vision of the Federation in The Next Generation, or delve into the darker corners of galactic politics in Deep Space Nine. No matter your preference, there's a Star Trek adventure waiting to ignite your imagination.

further complicates this political situation. However, no matter where the stories fall in Star Trek history, Vulcans will be a significant part of them.

STAR TREK: SECTION 31 Details Reveal Movie Will Feature Younger Version Of THE NEXT GENERATION Character

STAR TREK: SECTION 31 Details Reveal Movie Will Feature Younger Version Of THE NEXT GENERATION Character

New details have been revealed about Star Trek: Section 31 , the upcoming Paramount+ feature starring Michelle Yeoh. We also have a new look at her return as Emperor Philippa Georgiou! Check it out...

Last April, Paramount+ announced plans to move forward with a new  Star Trek  TV movie,  Star Trek: Section 31 , starring Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh ( Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ).

It will see Yeoh reprise her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, a character she first played in  Star Trek: Discovery  season 1, and picks up with the character after she joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and facing the sins of her past.

Variety  (via SFFGazette.com) has shared some new intel on what fans can expect, including an intriguing description from Yeoh which sees her characterise it as, "'Mission: Impossible' in space."

The trade explains that the plan had been for Section 31 to be a TV series, only for the actor's busy schedule following the success of  Everything Everywhere All at Once to put an end to that notion. Yeoh, however, was undaunted and agreed to sign up for a movie.

"We’d never let go of her," she explains. "I was just blown away by all the different things I could do with her. Honestly, it was like, ‘Let’s just get it done, because I believe in this."

This report also includes a pretty sizeable reveal as, in a scene the site's reporter got to watch being shot, Georgiou meets with a young Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), a character Star Trek fans will remember first meeting in The Next Generation as the older fearless Captain of the USS Enterprise-C.

Screenwriter Craig Sweeny says, "It was always my goal to deliver an entertaining experience that is true to the universe but appeals to newcomers. I wanted a low barrier of entry so that anybody could enjoy it."

"Famously, there’s a spot for everybody in Roddenberry’s utopia, so I was like, 'Well, who would be the people who don’t quite fit in?'" he says of the often-divisive Section 31 concept. "I didn’t want to make the John le Carré version, where you’re in the headquarters and it’s backbiting and shades of gray."

"I wanted to do the people who were at the edges, out in the field. These are not people who necessarily work together the way you would see on a 'Star Trek' bridge."

"Is it putting good into the world?"  he asks. "Are these characters ultimately putting good into the world? And, taking a step back, are we putting good into the world? Are we inspiring humans watching this to be good? That’s for me what I’ve always admired about 'Star Trek.'"

Take a look at a new still from Section 31 in the X post below.

10 Star Trek: Voyager Alien Villains Ranked, Worst To Best

  • Captain Janeway faces new Delta Quadrant aliens, navigating cultural differences to survive in unknown territories.
  • The Hierarchy rule through bureaucracy, lacking the Borg's collective unity, making them toothless villains.
  • Various alien species challenge Federation values, with conflicts arising from intolerance, fighting, and eradication.

Although a few familiar antagonists turn up on Star Trek: Voyager , most alien villains that the USS Voyager encounters are brand-new Delta Quadrant denizens unknown to the Federation and viewers alike. The days of knowing exactly what to expect in a face-off against Klingons or Romulans are long behind Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) , who makes first contact with more new alien species than anyone since Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). Instead, Janeway and Voyager's crew need to survive by figuring out the best approaches to diplomacy with Kazon, Vidiians, and Hirogen, when no Starfleet officer had even heard of those species before.

Of course, it doesn't always go according to plan, as seeking out new life so often does on Star Trek . There's no guidebook to navigating the Delta Quadrant 's unknown cultures, so Janeway's attempt to make friendly first contact with Delta Quadrant aliens might backfire and create new enemies for the Star Trek canon . The gulf between cultural mores is wider when Voyager 's villains also don't know what to expect from Starfleet, so they eye Federation values with suspicion. Sometimes, these differences are simply too great to overcome. Sometimes, it isn't personal at all, but a matter of survival for either Voyager or the new alien villains.

Every Major Star Trek Villain Species, Ranked

The hierarchy of overlookers, star trek: voyager season 7.

Although the Hierarchy controls a wide swath of space in the Delta Quadrant, they do so through the enforcement of bureaucracy rather than actual firepower. Each piece of the Hierarchy contributes to a widely disparate whole that can't seem to synthesize a complete picture, even with extensive evidence gleaned from highly-advanced sensors. In the interest of efficiency, each Overlooker is trained in a single discipline, so individual Overlookers rarely guess correctly, instead jumping to conclusions based off surveillance data.

The Overlookers are toothless villains.

With their commitment to efficiency, the Hierarchy seems to want to run on the same model as the Borg, but without the important Collective that unites all drones as one, the Hierarchy are corporate Borg on a slashed budget, and that's being generous. The Overlookers are toothless villains, with the conflict between the Hierarchy and the USS Voyager arising from continued misunderstandings, and the Hierarchy's own inability to think critically.

The Brunali

Star trek: voyager season 6.

An interesting case as villains, the Brunali are people trying to survive after a series of devastating Borg attacks forces them to abandon the technological advancements that made their society ripe for repeated assimilation attempts. Instead, the agrarian Brunali focus their scientific efforts on genetic engineering, ostensibly to increase crop yield in a harsh environment.

The Federation frowns upon genetic engineering, but the Brunali are Star Trek : Voyager villains because of their callousness. Two Brunali parents intentionally tampered with the genes of their son, Icheb (Manu Intiraymi) , to produce an anti-Borg virus, and knowingly allowed Icheb to be assimilated by the Borg . Even after Icheb is returned to the Brunali home world in Voyager season 6, episode 19 "Child's Play", his parents intend to let Icheb be assimilated again , and Brunali society simply allows it to happen.

Star Trek: Voyager Seasons 1 & 2

The Kazon on Star Trek: Voyager are among the first new species Voyager encounters in the Delta Quadrant, and they're set up as antagonists right from the start. Each independent sect of the Kazon controls different territory and resources, so infighting among their sects is one of the hallmarks of the Kazon. As a result, the technology that the Kazon co-opted from former oppressors, the Trabe, focuses on firepower and defense.

The truth is the Kazon are essentially just Seska's henchmen.

The potential exists for an interesting story about newly-liberated people figuring out self-governance, but throughout Star Trek: Voyager season 1, the Kazon exist mostly to make Voyager's passage difficult. After ex-crewmember Seska (Martha Hackett) allies with the Kazon and brings them stolen Federation technology to make the Kazon more powerful in Voyager season 2, the Kazon are actually a little more formidable, but the truth is the Kazon are essentially just Seska's henchmen.

John de Lancie as Q

Star trek: voyager seasons 2, 3, and 7.

The definition of "villain" is somewhat flexible when it comes to John de Lancie's Q , whose earlier appearances on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine range from mildly annoying house guest to omnipotent agent of chaos, but Q's three Star Trek: Voyager outings see a change in Q that affects the whole Continuum .

Make no mistake, though: a changed Q is still inconsiderate and irrepressibly antagonistic.

Captain Janeway refuses to indulge Q's games, but each time Q comes calling on Voyager , the circumstances shift ever-so-slightly. Q's first appearance in Star Trek: Voyager season 2, episode 18, "Death Wish", sees the first glimmers of change towards a kinder, gentler Q . In Voyager season 3, episode 11, "The Q and the Grey", and its follow-up, season 7's "Q2", a more desperate Q comes to Janeway asking for favors. Make no mistake, though: a changed Q is still inconsiderate and irrepressibly antagonistic.

Every Q Appearance In Star Trek TNG, DS9, Voyager & Picard

Star trek: voyager season 5.

The Devore are highly xenophobic and authoritarian, making them prime Star Trek villains that contrast with the Federation's tolerance and diversity. While suspicious of all outsiders, the Devore have a particular prejudice against telepaths, and are guilty of imprisoning countless innocent telepaths based solely on that genetic gift.

Because the Devore Imperium controls 11 star systems in the Delta Quadrant, it's difficult for the USS Voyager to avoid the Devore entirely. In Star Trek: Voyager season 5, episode 10, "Counterpoint", Voyager must accept strict terms to pass through Devore space, with a prescribed flight plan, routine inspections, and confirmation that Captain Janeway isn't harboring any telepaths. Of course, Janeway's hiding telepathic refugees in the transporter pattern buffer. The Devore aren't above emotional manipulation to counter Janeway's deception, all to advance their own misguided anti-telepath agenda.

In Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, episode 18, "Mindwalk", one of the telepaths that Janeway hides from the Devore is now a Starfleet officer who returns Janeway's kindness at a crucial moment.

Species 8472

Star Trek: Voyager Seasons 4 & 5

As natives of fluidic space, Star Trek: Voyager' s Species 8472 are the only species capable of standing up to the Borg, thanks to their powerful immune systems and biological technology that defies assimilation. The Borg suffer significant losses to Species 8472, since the Borg can't understand what they can't assimilate , so when the USS Voyager asks for guidance across Borg space, the Borg request Voyager's assistance in their war against Species 8472.

Even though Species 8472 may have been a strong ally against the Borg in different circumstances, Voyager's ability to subdue Species 8472 paints a target on the back of the Federation . In a mirror to Borg assimilation, Species 8472 attempt to make themselves more like Starfleet to understand their Federation enemies and mount an attack, but doing so just makes it easier to communicate, and initiate a cease-fire.

Ray Walston returns as the Species 8472 facsimile of Boothby, after playing the sagacious groundskeeper of Starfleet Academy in Star Trek: The Next Generation .

The Hirogen

Star trek: voyager seasons 4 - 7.

The Hirogen view themselves as the ultimate hunters, the apex predators of the Delta Quadrant, so the Hirogen consider every other alien species to be potential prey for their sacred hunt , a cultural practice central to Hirogen society. The Hirogen hunt is unsustainable, however, when the point is to subdue other species. Eventually, there will be no one left to pursue, and the art of the hunt will be lost when the last prey takes its final breath.

The USS Voyager's use of an abandoned Hirogen relay station catches the attention of the Hirogen, who become fascinated with pursuing Voyager as fresh blood, because Voyager's holographic technology enlivens the hunt. As a metaphor, stories featuring the Hirogen show how holding onto traditions can be detrimental , so cultures must adapt to changing circumstances in order to thrive.

The Krenim Imperium

Star trek: voyager season 4.

Star Trek: Voyager season 4, episodes 8 & 9, "Year of Hell", is one of the best episodes of Voyager , thanks to the tenacious Annorax (Kurtwood Smith), whose obsession with restoring the Imperium to its former glory is motivated by the loss of his wife and family. No amount of meddling with timelines returns a version of the Imperium that includes Annorax's loved ones , though Annorax believes erasing the USS Voyager from history will accomplish that goal.

Ironically, the Krenim are compelling villains because of how sympathetic they are. Annorax is painted in a similar light to Janeway, who harbors a similar obsession with bringing Voyager's crew home. As two sides of the same coin, Annorax and Janeway vie for who is willing to pay the higher cost to bring "Year of Hell" to a satisfying conclusion.

Every Star Trek: Voyager 2-Part Episode Ranked, Worst To Best

The vidiians, star trek: voyager seasons 1 - 7.

The Vidiians, with a patchwork appearance of body parts stolen from other alien species that are inelegantly incorporated into their own, are first introduced in one of Star Trek 's creepiest episodes . In Star Trek: Voyager season 1, episode 5, "Phage", when Vidiians steal Neelix's lungs, it's revealed that the Vidiians are suffering from the Phage, a generations-old wasting disease with no known cure. The Vidiians engage in medical larceny as a means of survival, with medical technology that's far more advanced than anything the Doctor (Robert Picardo) has seen.

Besides their brilliantly designed body-horror makeup, what makes the Vidiians so terrifying is the deeply impersonal nature of their quest for organs. In their (stolen) eyes, other sentient species are neither friends nor enemies, but simply collections of living tissue that can be harvested to prolong the Vidiians' own lives.

One Vidiian doctor, Danara Pel (Susan Diol) evokes more sympathy in Star Trek: Voyager season 2, episode 19, "Lifesigns", when the Doctor creates a holographic body in Pel's original, pre-Phage form.

No longer simply blank-slate drones, the Borg in Star Trek: Voyager are different from their earlier incarnation in Star Trek: The Next Generation , made far more fascinating with added depth. Through Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) , Voyager 's audience is exposed to the ideas of the Collective, and what life is like for a drone. Voyager 's Borg are motivated by an unceasing quest for perfection, and the practice of assimilation is an efficient method of understanding other cultures, despite still being an act of aggression.

And yet, understanding the Borg more clearly makes them far worse than if they'd simply remained a force of nature. There is a will behind the unspeakable acts the Borg commit in the name of understanding the galaxy, an awareness of pain that's irrelevant when it belongs to one so insignificant as an individual. The Borg take without giving back, force individuals into their image, eradicate free will, and their Queen takes pleasure in it.

Voyager's Borg are motivated by an unceasing quest for perfection.

The alien villains of Star Trek: Voyager are broad and varied, with each Delta Quadrant villain representing a different conflict against Federation values . The Federation champions diversity, but the Devore and Species 8472 remain intolerant. Where the Federation would hope for peace, the Kazon and Hirogen prefer to fight. However, with the Brunali's callous sacrifice, the Krenim so easily wiping others out, the Vidiians' impersonal organ harvesting, and the Borg ruthlessly eradicating autonomy in the Collective, the distance from the Federation's respect for other people is a repeated theme in Star Trek: Voyager, and ultimately what makes the best and worst alien villains.

Doug Jones Learned About Discovery’s Cancellation On A Star Trek Cruise, But Explains Why It Ended Up Being A Beautiful Experience

The actor detailed the experience.

The news of Star Trek: Discovery 's cancellation came as a shock to many, including the cast. By now, it's well known the cast and crew of the Paramount+ series had no idea it would be ending with Season 5, but fortunately they were allowed to go back and film a proper ending. Had Saru actor Doug Jones known the show would be cancelled, he probably wouldn't have decided to be on a Star Trek-themed cruise when the announcement broke. Of course, that's not how things played out, but Jones told CinemaBlend it ended up being a beautiful experience.

I had the privilege of speaking to Doug Jones and David Ajala ahead of the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, and I remembered that Jones was on the famous Star Trek Cruise when the show's cancellation was announced. I asked the actor about the experience and found out how it played out for him while many others on board the cruise were blissfully unaware of what was coming:

I had dual feelings about this because I got an emergency phone call from someone on the ship from CBS saying you have to get on a Zoom call in two hours...And so then we got the news from Alex Kurtzman that we were going to be and we've been canceled but that we were gonna be able to go back and film uh a little epilogue attack on the last episode. And so I'm thinking all along, I am on a ship with 2000 Star Trek fans and I had to go out and do a one-on-one interview on stage for 1000 of them.

I can imagine the anxiety Doug Jones had in that moment knowing what he was about to face. He had only just found out about Star Trek: Discovery ending, and before he could even process that, he had to go in front of crowd and do an interview as the news rolled out across the internet. Here he thought he'd probably drop some teases about Season 5's story or what's happening with Saru and T'Rina , and instead he could be in the hot seat with a lot of worried fans until the ship goes back to port.

Jones confirmed he was nervous about going to the panel, but faced the music anyway and sat in front of fans who, by that point, all knew Star Trek: Discovery 's fate. He was dreading the experience, but shared with CinemaBlend why it ended up being beautiful:

So I was like, ‘Horrible timing,’ but it turned out to be what beautiful timing that was, I was surrounded by family that we've talked about so much on this show that it's a family of us making the shows. It's a family of those who watch it. And I was among those people who supported us over the years and the reason we make those shows is for those fans and so to have them there, you know, cheering me on. I mean, I might have broken down in tears that day while I was on stage, and they might have been, they might have given me a standing ovation. I don't wanna brag or anything, but it was really, it was a lovely exchange that happened that there's no better place to have the news.

As worried as he was, Doug Jones ended up having a lovely time with the fans in spite of the bad news. Good on Star Trek fans for not turning into an angry mob with pitchforks, though considering the franchise's overall emphasis on diplomacy as opposed to violence, I don't think it ever would've come to that. Still, it could've been a really miserable time for Jones being surrounded by disappointed fans on the Star Trek Cruise, but thankfully, it wasn't.

The Star Trek: Discovery cast

The two have some similarities.

As for the ending of Star Trek: Discovery , Doug Jones has confirmed he's seen it and that the ending gave him some closure over the early conclusion. I'm sure he's also taking solace in the fact that it was recently confirmed that the upcoming Star Trek series Starfleet Academy will be set in the 32nd century.

This means that the door will be open for the cast to reprise their roles on the upcoming series, assuming they don't all die in some awful accident in the final scene. I don't think that will happen, especially given that Doug Jones seemed pleased by the ending. I guess he could just have a twisted sense of humor and think it's hilarious to see the show end that way, but I'm going to believe we're in for a pleasant ending for this series.
