Summary [ ].

With Star Trek having narrowly avoided cancellation, the basic format remained the same as Season 2. The season opened with " Spock's Brain ", a story in which Kara , the priestess-leader of the underground Eymorg city, steals Spock's brain and transfers it to a receptacle so that he can rule their society.

Other episodes continued to serve as political parables. " Day of the Dove " carried a strong anti-war message, while " Let That Be Your Last Battlefield " dealt with racial hatred, ending with the Enterprise unable to prevent the destruction of a civilization or even dissuade the two survivors from continuing their feud. " The Empath " told a tightly constructed morality play with Kirk, Spock, and McCoy teach an alien woman the value of self-sacrifice. While " Plato's Stepchildren " may not have featured television's first interracial kiss, it was still groundbreaking enough to be banned in some states.

Kirk had one of his most significant romances in " The Paradise Syndrome ", as he spent three months stranded on a planet, fell in love, and married, only for his pregnant wife to be killed in a tragic misunderstanding. He also fell in love with an android in " Requiem for Methuselah ", inadvertently bringing about her death. Spock attracted female attention in episodes like " The Enterprise Incident ", " The Cloud Minders ", and " All Our Yesterdays ", and McCoy and Scott found love in " For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky " and " The Lights of Zetar ", respectively.

Of the junior crewmembers, Chekov had significant roles in " Spectre of the Gun " and " The Way to Eden ", the latter giving a rare insight into his past. Sulu was given a chance to command the ship in " Spock's Brain ", for the first time since " Errand of Mercy ", and accompanied Kirk and McCoy on an away team in " That Which Survives ", while Uhura and Christine Chapel finally had an opportunity to get closer to the two leads in " Plato's Stepchildren ", albeit at the behest of telekinetic aliens.

The Klingons made two major appearances in " Elaan of Troyius " and " Day of the Dove ". The latter introduced the character of Kang , who was later seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager . The Romulans appeared in person for the first time since " Balance of Terror " when they returned in " The Enterprise Incident ", and the Tholians were introduced in " The Tholian Web ". " The Savage Curtain " saw Kirk and Spock forced to play out the battle against good and evil, with three of the other participants, Phillip Green , Kahless the Unforgettable , and Surak , reappearing in later series as their original selves. The episode also marked the last appearance of Uhura on the show.

The season closed with " Turnabout Intruder ", in which Kirk found himself trapped in the body of bitter former lover Janice Lester , who proceeded to charge his comrades with mutiny.

TOS Season 3 Head

The blue logo in Season 3

  • Some production staff members were disappointed with season three. In a 2006 interview, Leonard Nimoy called it " very weak in general, but it was especially not good for Spock . " [4]
  • Ira Steven Behr once said that both he and his sister were disappointed with this third season. [5] (X) He also commented that his disappointment with the season was similar to the reaction of "most fans." ( AOL chat , 1997 )
  • For the third season, the title and credits were in a light blue color, much like the credits of Star Trek: The Next Generation .
  • Kirk no longer wore a green wrap-around shirt in any of the episodes, though officers were seen wearing the full dress uniform in " Is There in Truth No Beauty? " and " The Savage Curtain ". Also in the third season, Scott's dress uniform was accompanied by a traditional Scottish kilt . The uniforms were no longer made of velour (which shrank every time it was cleaned), but of double-knit polyester.
  • Each episode of the third season now cost about US$175,000, the budget having been reduced even further, while the salaries of the main cast increased. Consequently, only two episodes out of the twenty-four this season (" The Paradise Syndrome " and " All Our Yesterdays ") featured location scenery.
  • Gene Roddenberry was initially promised an early evening time slot (Mondays at 7:30 pm) by NBC. However, this would have required their top-rated series Laugh-In to be moved from its 8 pm time slot to 8:30. Laugh-In Producer George Schaltter threatened to take his show to another network unless it was guaranteed the 8 pm slot. NBC capitulated, forcing Star Trek to air its third season in the only remaining slot on the schedule – Fridays at 10 pm. Roddenberry threatened to leave Star Trek entirely if it wasn't put back to the promised time slot, but NBC rejected his threats due to the show's low ratings. He technically kept the post of executive producer for this season, but had actually left for MGM to work on other projects.
  • Because of Roddenberry's withdrawal, scripts were no longer revised or re-written by him, nor by either Gene L. Coon or D.C. Fontana , who both left the series earlier. Script quality greatly suffered because of this. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story )
  • After Roddenberry and most of the writing staff left after the second season, Fred Freiberger took over as producer, with Arthur H. Singer replacing D.C. Fontana as script consultant. According to Fontana, Singer came to the set one day, and asked, " By the way, what does that transporter thing do again? " [6]
  • Robert H. Justman was promoted to co-producer, but left the series after " Let That Be Your Last Battlefield ". Gregg Peters became the new associate producer.
  • A most important change was the departure of cinematographer Jerry Finnerman after " The Empath ", and his replacement with his former camera operator, Al Francis , which affected the visual style of the series.
  • Several new writers were brought in. Many of them were non-professionals, who sent in story outlines, which were read and recommended by Justman. These included Jean Lisette Aroeste , Joyce Muskat , and Judy Burns .
  • While a few directors from prior seasons returned, none of them (save for John Meredyth Lucas and Ralph Senensky , the latter of whom was fired midway through his second episode) worked on more than one episode. The season was therefore mostly handled by a new set of directors, with Jud Taylor and Herb Wallerstein being the two most frequent.
  • According to Star Trek Lives! writer Joan Winston , NBC passed on an option for two additional episodes (a twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth) for the third season. William Shatner would have directed the twenty-fifth episode, " The Joy Machine ". Ultimately, it was another two decades before Shatner got the opportunity to direct a Star Trek production (the film Star Trek V: The Final Frontier , which was released almost twenty years to the day after TOS series finale " Turnabout Intruder ") and twenty-one years before a Star Trek episode would be directed by a member of the cast ( TNG : " The Offspring ", directed by Jonathan Frakes ).

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Sonequa Martin-Green in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Anson Mount as Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.

Hologram Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Star Trek: The Original Series: Season 3 Remastered

Product Description

The original Star Trek adventure that started the enduring sci-fi pop culture phenomenon. The classic series focuses on the 23rd century adventures of Captain James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, a powerful interstellar spacecraft dispatched by Earth-based Starfleet Command to explore the galaxy. Kirk commands a large crew of men and women aboard the starship, which can travel at speeds surpassing the speed of light. Their five-year mission - with a mandate from Starfleet - is to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man has gone before. Fan favorite episodes from Season 3 include "Spock's Brain," "The Tholian Web," where Kirk becomes trapped between universes, "Plato's Stepchildren," featuring the unforgettable kiss between Kirk and Uhura, and "The Savage Curtain," where Spock and Kirk are forced into a contest of good vs. evil.

The best of the 63 minutes of bonus material focuses on three of the actors: Walter Koenig, George Takei, and James Doohan. Koenig discusses how he was cast and shows off his various collections, one consisting of Chekov figurines. Takei speaks movingly about the Japanese American internment and, in what is probably his last Star Trek appearance, Doohan, slowed by Alzheimer's but still with a twinkle in his eye, recalls his voiceover roles and his favorite episodes. The Easter eggs are amusingly called "Red Shirt Files" in tribute to those poor saps who everyone knew were only in the landing party so they could die. --David Horiuchi

Image for article titled Star Trek Release Dates: When to Expect All the New and Returning Shows

Expected in early 2024 , Discovery ’s fifth season will be 10 episodes long, down from the 13 of prior seasons. In the wake of season four‘s climax earlier this year , Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led her crew in a desperate attempt to save the galaxy from a mysterious anomaly created by an extra-galactic race, ensuring peace and stability for the Federation once more... for now. As her romantic partner Book (David Ajala) pays time for his own role in a campaign to surreptitiously destroy that anomaly, we’re not sure what awaits Burnham and Discovery ’s crew just yet, but given this show, we’re sure it’ll be very, very dramatic.

In Flux : Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

Image for article titled Star Trek Release Dates: When to Expect All the New and Returning Shows

The animated series aimed at younger Trek fans (and Janeway fans!) and kids at heart can be found on both Nickelodeon and Paramount+. The first season was divided into two parts, with part two wrapping up at the end of 2022; after Paramount+ announced it would not move forward with the show’s already greenlit season two , it was removed from the service . ( A home release of the complete first season is still possible ; the first 10 episodes are still available for purchase.) Fans are still waiting to hear if Prodigy season two will surface on a different outlet .

Upcoming : Starfleet Academy

It’s really happening! After a long tease, filming on this series will begin in 2024. Here’s the official announcement from co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau:

“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today!   Ex Astris, Scientia!”

Upcoming (movie) : Star Trek: Section 31

Image for article titled Star Trek Release Dates: When to Expect All the New and Returning Shows

Announced as a TV series back in 2019 as a spinoff for fan-favorite Discovery guest star Michelle Yeoh, this plunge into the seediest side of Starfleet—the shadowy spy organization Section 31 first introduced in Deep Space Nine— is now planned as a Paramount+ film .

Newly minted Oscar winner Yeoh will return as former emperor of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire, Phillipa Georgiou, now turned into a kinder, but still kickass person by her time with Michael Burnham. “I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” Yeoh said in a statement. “ Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”

Written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Section 31 will start production later this year, and eventually come to Paramount+.

Star Trek: Picard

StarTrek.com

Make it so! In honor of First Contact Day, Paramount+ today revealed that Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek: The Next Generation co-stars LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner will star alongside Stewart in season three of the service’s hit original series Star Trek: Picard . Season three is the concluding chapter in the Star Trek: Picard saga.

“I remember watching the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation almost 34 years ago with my father like it was yesterday. It was the spark that ignited my love for science fiction,” said Terry Matalas, season three showrunner and executive producer. “So, it’s most fitting that the story of Jean-Luc Picard ends honoring the beginning, with his dearest and most loyal friends from the U.S.S. Enterprise . It would be an understatement to say that giving these characters a proper send-off is an honor. The entire Star Trek: Picard team and I can’t wait for fans to experience this final, high-stakes, starship-bound adventure in season three!”

As depicted in the film Star Trek: First Contact , starring the aforementioned Star Trek: The Next Generation cast members, April 5, 2063, is the day that humans first make contact with Vulcans, marking a pivotal moment of exploration and acceptance in Star Trek history. Since the film’s debut, Star Trek fans around the world celebrate First Contact Day annually on April 5.

A Special Announcement About Star Trek: Picard Season 3

Star Trek: Picard features Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation , and follows this iconic character into the next chapter of his life. The series is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. For season three, Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Terry Matalas, Patrick Stewart, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Doug Aarniokoski and Dylan Massin serve as executive producers. Terry Matalas serves as showrunner for season three.

Season two of Star Trek: Picard is currently streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S., with new episodes dropping weekly on Thursdays.

Star Trek: Picard streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and is distributed concurrently by Paramount Global Content Distribution on Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories. In Canada, it airs on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel and streams on Crave.

As another part of this year’s First Contact Day celebrations, Paramount+ and CBS will jointly donate $1 for every Tweet (one per handle) sent that uses the hashtag #StarTrekUnitedGives through Sunday, April 10th. Donations will go towards charities that support LGBTQ+ equality, veterans, and humanitarian aid. Visit StarTrek.com/StarTrekUnitedGives for more info and terms.

third star trek series

John de Lancie doesn't think it was expected that season three of Star Trek: Picard would be so well-received

P roducing a television (or streaming) series is a gamble. There's no way to know if the show will be liked enough or watched enough to continue. The chance of cancellation always looms over practically every series (unless it's NCIS or Law and Order: SVU). Star Trek: Picard was always meant to be a three-season series so the producers knew the show was wrapping no matter how well received the final chapter would be. But, according to John de Lancie , in an interview he gave Trekmovie, [ via Comicbook ] he didn't think anyone expected season three to be as good as it was. So, obviously, the fan clamor for a spin-off must have come as a surprise as well.

The way de Lancie describes it, the powers-that-be had already decided on what the next series would be—Starfleet Academy. So there was no opening for Star Trek: Legacy.

"I don’t think that they expected that Season 3 was going to be as good and as well-received. They had already decided on another show. They were already moving in another direction. But it was certainly a really valiant and well-appreciated finale to The Next Generation.”John de Lancie

I find it hard to believe that the producers and the studio wouldn't have known how successful the final season of Picard would be since they were bringing back practically everyone from Star Trek: The Next Generation. That series has maintained its fanbase over the years, and seeing them all together again onscreen was a big draw. It was akin to announcing another movie with the cast. Had season three of Picard unfolded on the big screen, I have no doubt there would have been major numbers at the box office.

If no one was prepared for the success of the final season of Picard, then the door to a possibility of a spin-off shouldn't have even been opened. Though showrunner Terry Matalas has said the series finale wasn't intended to be a set-up for a spin-off, there's really no other way to interpret it the final scene. Q, who supposedly died in season two of Picard, appeared before Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), who just happens to be Admiral Picard's (Patrick Stewart) son with, essentially, a promise of troubles to come. That's quite a big carrot to dangle if there was never any intention of feeding the horse.

As of now, we don't have any news on Legacy, and with Star Trek moving forward with Starfleet Academy, it doesn't seem like it's on the studio's radar at present.

DALLAS (AP) — The first model of the USS Enterprise — used in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series — has boldly gone back home, returning to creator Gene Roddenberry’s son decades after it went missing.

The model’s disappearance sometime in the 1970s had become the subject of lore, so it caused a stir when it popped up on eBay last fall. The sellers quickly took it down, and then contacted Dallas-based Heritage Auctions to authenticate it. Last weekend, the auction house facilitated the model’s return.

Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, said he’s thrilled to have the model that had graced the desk of his father, who died in 1991 at age 70.

“This is not going home to adorn my shelves,” Roddenberry said. “This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.”

AP correspondent Margie Szaroleta reports on the return of the original model of the USS Enterprise from the TV show “Star Trek.”

Heritage’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said the auction house was contacted by people who said they’d discovered it a storage unit, and when it was brought into their Beverly Hills office, he and a colleague “instantly knew that it was the real thing.”

They reached out to Roddenberry, who said he appreciates that everyone involved agreed returning the model was the right thing to do. He wouldn’t go into details on the agreement reached but said “I felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that.”

Maddalena said the model vanished in the 1970s after Gene Roddenberry loaned it to makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979.

“No one knew what happened to it,” Rod Roddenberry said.

The 3-foot (0.91-meter) model of the USS Enterprise was used in the show’s original pilot episode as well as the opening credits of the resulting TV series, and was the prototype for the 11-foot (3-meter) version featured in the series’ episodes. The larger model is on display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

The original “Star Trek” television series, which aired in the late 1960s, kicked off an ever-expanding multiverse of cultural phenomena, with TV and movie spinoffs and conventions where a fanbase of zealous and devoted Trekkies can’t get enough of memorabilia.

This USS Enterprise model would easily sell for more than $1 million at auction, but really “it’s priceless,” Maddalena said.

“It could sell for any amount and I wouldn’t be surprised because of what it is,” he said. “It is truly a cultural icon.”

Roddenberry, who was just a young boy when the model went missing, said he has spotty memories of it, “almost a deja vu.” He said it wasn’t something he’d thought much about until people began contacting him after it appeared on eBay.

“I don’t think I really, fully comprehended at first that this was the first Enterprise ever created,” he said.

He said he has no idea if there was something nefarious behind the disappearance all those decades ago or if it was just mistakenly lost, but it would be interesting to find out more about what happened.

“This piece is incredibly important and it has its own story and this would be a great piece of the story,” Roddenberry said.

Thankfully, he said, the discovery has cleared up one rumor: That it was destroyed because as a young boy, he’d thrown it into a pool.

“Finally I’m vindicated after all these years,” he said with a laugh.

'FBI International' Just Lost Another Lead

Agent Forrester leaves next month.

The Big Picture

  • Luke Kleintank is set to exit FBI: International , following Heida Reed who has already departed the series.
  • Both original cast members cite personal reasons for their departures from the series.
  • New episodes air on CBS weekly.

The Fly Team must make do without Scott Forrester as Luke Kleintank exits FBI: International , Deadline reports. In a shocking turn of events, the show has now lost two of its original cast members who have been a staple since the first season. Kleintank's final episode will air next month on May 7. His exit follows that of Heida Reed , who has served as Kleintank's co-star since the series premiered in 2021. In a statement, Kleintank revealed why he had decided to leave the show, citing his family, who are his prime concern. Read what he had to say below:

“After much thought and consideration, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave FBI International. This decision is driven by my unwavering commitment to my family, whose love and well-being are paramount in my life. I’m profoundly thankful for the extraordinary cast and crew of the show, who have not only been colleagues but also a family away from home. Their unwavering dedication and remarkable talents have made every moment on set an unforgettable journey that has enriched my life in countless ways. Lastly, I would also like to extend my thanks to the fans who have supported us through the first three seasons.”

Reed exited the show in the Season 3 premiere as her character was written out. Agent Kellet left the Fly Team and moved to the DC field office, revealing that it was time to return home as she had been running away from the grief arising from her sister's suicide. Her spot was filled by Christina Wolfe, who plays Amanda Tate.

What Is 'FBI: International' All About?

The third entrant into the FBI franchise, FBI: International follows the members of the FBI's international "Fly Team" headquartered in Budapest who locate and neutralize threats against American interests worldwide and Europe. The team is not allowed to carry weapons and must rely on quick thinking, intelligence, and ability to engage in hand-to-hand combat. The show stars Kleintank as Scott Forrester, Carter Redwood as Andre Raines, Vinessa Vidotto as Cameron Vo , Wolfe as Amanda Tate, and Eva-Jane Willis as Megan "Smitty" Garretson.

CBS has renewed all three FBI shows for new seasons, with the flagship series renewed for three more seasons. Dick Wolf serves as the executive producer on FBI: International with his Chicago Fire collaborators Derek Haas and Matt Olmstead .

New episodes of FBI: International air on CBS on Tuesday nights at 9 PM ET/PT. Stream past episodes on Paramount+.

Did you know

  • Trivia The Starfleet vessels seen in the first season, including the Discovery, the Shenzou and the redesigned Enterprise, were all designed by production artist John Eaves. Eaves' work with Star Trek spans three decades. Probably his most notable contribution was the design of the Enterprise-E for Star Trek: First Contact (1996) .
  • Goofs With Michael being the adoptive sister of Spock, the series has many flashbacks to their childhood and upbringing on Vulcan. Spock's Vulcan half-brother, Sybok, does not appear nor is mention during these scenes. In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) , Spock says that he and Sybok grew up together. However, since it's never stated when Sybok joined Sarek's home - only that he did so following his mother's death - or when he was exiled from the family, it's not impossible Sybok moved in after Burnham, and left before she graduated (the two extremes of the flashbacks). Also, since Sybok was never mentioned before Star Trek V, it seems reasonable the family never spoke of him again after his estrangement.
