Cyclisme : l'édition 2022 du Tour du Benelux annulée

L'édition 2022 du Tour du Benelux, initialement programmée du 29 août au 4 septembre aux Pays-Bas et en Belgique, a été annulée en raison d'un calendrier surchargé « tant au niveau logistique que médiatique », ont annoncé les organisateurs. « La pression de ce calendrier cycliste international provoque plusieurs conflits suite auxquels, malgré des tentatives vaines, le report constitue l'unique solution possible », ont expliqué les organisateurs dans un communiqué publié mardi.

« La police néerlandaise ne peut pas garantir de pouvoir assurer l'encadrement des étapes aux Pays-Bas », ont-ils notamment souligné. Selon le directeur général de l'organisateur, Golazo, Christophe Impens, « le report du Tour du Benelux en 2023 est regrettable pour les fans de cyclisme des Plats Pays, mais il s'agissait de la seule solution pour éviter des problèmes ».

Les organisateurs vont s'atteler à trouver une meilleure date pour 2023, ont-ils précisé. Le Tour d'Allemagne (24-28 août) et le Tour de Grande-Bretagne (4-11 sept) figurent notamment au calendrier à cette période de l'année.

Organiser Golazo says race will seek new date for its return in 2023

The Benelux Tour will not take place in 2022 due to the overcrowded nature of the cycling calendar in August. In a statement, organiser Golazo said that it was lobbying the UCI for a more amenable date on the schedule in 2023.

This year’s Benelux Tour – previously known as the Eneco Tour and the BinckBank Tour – was due to take place in the Netherlands and Belgium from August 29 to September 4. The race was due to clash with the Vuelta a España, which this year gets underway in Utrecht on August 19.

“For the organisation, the postponement of the event is the only solution in order to avoid problems linked to an overloaded cycling calendar, especially at the logistical and media level,” read the statement from Golazo.

“The pressure of the international cycling calendar provokes several conflicts, and so, despite vain attempts, postponement is the only possible solution.”

Golazo added that the Dutch police was unable to guarantee its supervision of the stages in the Netherlands. “For the Benelux Tour, which emphasizes safety, racing without the necessary police assistance is dangerous and not an option.”

The clash with the Vuelta for the second successive year also created problems with broadcast schedules and media visibility. Golazo stated that this would in turn have led to logistical issues for participating teams.

“Scheduling arrival times and television broadcasts also posed intractable problems,” said Golazo. “The times of broadcast of the other races at the same time would have forced the organisation to plan arrival times which would become uninteresting for the supporters and guests on site, as well as for the television viewers. It would also result in impossible departure times and travel for the teams.”

Golazo confirmed that it is liaising with the UCI and the Belgian and Dutch cycling federations for a different slot on the calendar from 2023.

The race was first held in 2005 under the banner of the Eneco Tour as a replacement for the old Tour of the Netherlands, and it was a part of that season’s inaugural ProTour (now WorldTour).

The event was traditionally held in early August, though in 2016 it shifted to a September date due to the Rio Olympics and that year’s October Worlds in Doha. Four years later, the race was held in late September as the calendar was rearranged due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last year, the Benelux Tour took place in late August, clashing directly with the Vuelta. Sonny Colbrelli took the overall title, and he would later go on to win both the European Championships and Paris-Roubaix that Autumn.

“The postponement of the Benelux Tour to 2023 is regrettable for the cycling fans of Les Plats Pays, as it is for our team, which has been preparing for months already,” said Christophe Impens of Golazo. “But it is a necessary decision and the only solution to avoid problems.”

Tour Du Benelux 2024 van 8 t/m 12 Mei

Dag 1 volgt traditioneel de Maas van Bemmel (bij Nijmegen) tot Valkenburg.

Dag 2 maken we een rit door de de België met bekende en minder bekende beklimmingen.

Dag 3 is er een verrassende route door het limburgse heuvellandschap.

Dag 4 gaan we richting de Duitse Eifel met wederom het nodige klimwerk.

Dag 5 van Valkenburg gaat via de traditionele route door Brabant terug naar Bemmel.

De overnachtingen vinden plaats in hotel Schaepkens te Valkenburg op basis van volpension en u wordt ondergebracht op tweepersoonskamers. Er is nog een (1 x) éénpersoonskamers beschikbaar 

Onderweg is er twee maal bevoorrading waarvan elke dag één stop bij een restaurant.

De organisatie is voorzien van een fietsenmaker zodat kleine mankementen snel verholpen kunnen worden. De deelnemers worden geacht voor aanvang van de tocht hun fiets technisch in orde te hebben.

De inschrijving is pas definitief zodra het inschrijfgeld is overgemaakt en dient voor 1 Mei 2024 te zijn voldaan.

Le Tour du Benelux, course cycliste par étapes du calendrier WorldTour, qui devait se tenir du 29 août au 4 septembre, n'aura pas lieu cette année. Les organisateurs l'ont annoncé mardi dans un communiqué, expliquant qu'il s'agit de "la seule solution afin d'éviter des problèmes liés à un calendrier cycliste surchargé, surtout au niveau logistique et médiatique". L'organisation va se mettre à la recherche d'une "meilleure date" en 2023 en compagnie de l'UCI et des deux fédérations cyclistes nationales "La pression de ce calendrier cycliste international provoque plusieurs conflits suite auxquels, malgré des tentatives vaines, le report constitue l'unique solution possible", ont indiqué les organisateurs, qui expliquent que la police néerlandaise "ne peut pas garantir de pouvoir assurer l'encadrement des étapes aux Pays-Bas par la Landelijke Eenheid", une unité de la police nationale.

La planification des heures d'arrivée et des retransmissions télévisées pose aussi des "problèmes insolubles", selon l'organisation. "Les heures de diffusion des autres courses au même moment auraient contraint l'organisation à prévoir des heures d'arrivée qui deviendraient inintéressantes pour les supporters et invités sur place, de même que pour les téléspectateurs. Cela engendrerait également pour les équipes des heures de départ et des déplacements impossibles."

"Il s'agit d'une décision nécessaire et la seule solution pour éviter des problèmes", a déclaré Christophe Impens de l'organisateur Golazo. "Toutes les parties concernées vont profiter de l'occasion pour travailler à un Benelux Tour meilleur et plus fort encore pour les années à venir."

Le Tour d'Espagne (19 août-11 septembre) est la seule autre épreuve WorldTour programmée à ces dates-là. Le Tour du Benelux, qui existe depuis 2005, attire généralement un beau plateau, comme le témoigne le palmarès qui comprend notamment Tim Wellens (2014-2015), Niki Terpstra (2016), Tom Dumoulin (2017), Matej Mohoric (2018), Laurens De Plus (2019), Mathieu van der Poel (2020) ou encore Sonny Colbrelli, vainqueur l'an passé devant Mohoric et Victor Campenaerts.
