Néih hóu! Hong Kong is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with a unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures. It is a global financial center, a major tourist destination, and a foodie's heaven. Upon arrival in Hong Kong, your local tour guide and driver will meet you there and escort you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your own leisure.

Arrival Ideas: As Asia's World City, travelers can easily arrive in Hong Kong by air. There are numerous international and domestic airlines available for you to reach Hong Kong and access the rest of Asia. You can fly to Hong Kong from most cities in China, such as Guilin, Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Kunming, Chengdu, and more. Additionally, travelers have the option to take a high-speed train to Hong Kong from Guilin (3.5 hours), Guangzhou (1 hour), Shenzhen (0.5 hour), Kunming (7.5 hours), and other cities.

Free Time Ideas: You have the option to embark on your own exploration of Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple (黄大仙祠) and Nan Lian Garden (南莲园池) during the afternoon. These attractions offer a fascinating glimpse into the cultural and natural beauty of Hong Kong. Additionally, indulge in a memorable stroll along the renowned Avenue of Stars (星光大道), where you can admire the awe-inspiring vistas of Victoria Harbor and Hong Kong Island adorned with its towering skyscrapers. If your schedule allows, make sure to catch the mesmerizing " A Symphony of Lights" show (幻彩咏香江) at 20:00, an enchanting display that transforms the Hong Kong skyline into a captivating audio-visual extravaganza, truly a feast for the senses.

Dining

Today, you will enjoy a half-day guided tour (09:00-13:30, about 4.5 hours) with us to explore the stunning city skyline, the beautiful Victoria Harbour, the traditional way of life, and the beach scenery.

In the morning, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby between 08:50 and 09:00. It's time to enjoy your half-day trip in Hong Kong and explore the stunning skylines from a different perspective. Start by taking the famous Star Ferry (天星小轮) at Tsim Sha Tsui Pier (尖沙咀码头) and cross Victoria Harbour between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon in just 7 minutes. The Star Ferry, a historic ferry service that has been operating in Hong Kong since 1888, offers a unique experience with breathtaking views of the iconic skyline and Victoria Harbor. Disembark at Central Star Ferry Pier (中环天星码头).

After that, pay a visit to the highest point of Hong Kong Island - Victoria Peak (about 552 meters), also known as the Peak, where you can enjoy stunning views of the city skyline from another perspective. You will take the famous Peak Tram , which has been in operation for more than 130 years, and journey through the verdant woods to explore some hidden old buildings that were left behind from old Hong Kong. Once you reach the Peak, make sure to visit the Sky Terrace 428 - an observation deck that offers 360-degree views of the breathtaking Hong Kong skyline and beautiful harbor. Seize this rare opportunity to capture some amazing photos from the top.

Later, drive about 30 minutes from the Peak to the Aberdeen Fishing Village , where you will experience a very interesting contrast and change of pace from the Hong Kong business district and Kowloon. Aberdeen is a historic fishing village located in the Southern District of Hong Kong Island. It is one of the oldest and most traditional fishing villages in Hong Kong. Take a sampan ride through the village and witness the traditional way of life of the boat people. Visit the Aberdeen Wholesale Fish Market and see the fresh seafood that is caught and sold in Hong Kong. If time permits, take a stroll along the Aberdeen Promenade and enjoy the breathtaking views of the harbor and the surrounding mountains.

Lastly, escape the bustling cityscape and head to the tranquil Repulse Bay , one of Hong Kong's most famous beaches. Sink your toes into the soft sand, soak up the sun, and take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of the South China Sea. With its picturesque surroundings and serene ambiance, Repulse Bay offers the perfect setting for relaxation. Whether you choose to unwind on the beach or indulge in water activities, this coastal oasis will leave you rejuvenated. ( Note: In the event of unfavorable weather conditions for beach relaxation, an alternative plan will be executed, leading you to the vibrant Stanley Market. Explore the lively marketplace teeming with an array of exquisite trinkets, fashionable apparel, and unique souvenirs that cannot be found elsewhere. Indulge in a moment of relaxation by savoring a cup of coffee or beer at one of the charming seaside cafés or pubs, providing respite from the bustling crowds.) Upon concluding the tour, you will be accompanied back to your hotel.

Free Time Ideas for Evening Tour: If time allows, explore the lively street markets of Temple Street Night Market or Ladies' Market , where you can find a variety of local goods, including clothing, accessories, and souvenirs. The remaining time allows you to indulge in the vibrant street scene of Kowloon, with its bustling markets, shops, and restaurants. Take the opportunity to try some local street food or dine at a traditional Cantonese restaurant to savor the flavors of Hong Kong cuisine.

Admire the cityscape from Victoria Peak

If you have already explored Hong Kong and are looking to venture further, consider taking a day tour from Hong Kong to Macau . Begin your journey in the morning by heading to the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal, where you can catch a TurboJET ferry to Macau. The ferry ride takes approximately 55 minutes and will bring you to Macau's Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal.

Upon arriving in Macau, start your exploration by visiting some of the iconic landmarks. The first stop could be the Ruins of St. Paul's , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This magnificent structure features a facade adorned with statues of saints, angels, and dragons, showcasing a fusion of Portuguese and Chinese influences. The grandeur of the church's facade and the intricate carvings are truly awe-inspiring. Take the opportunity to climb the stairs to the top of the facade, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Macau and the Pearl River Delta.

Next, make your way to Fortaleza do Monte , also known as "Mount Fortress." This 17th-century fortification was originally built by the Jesuits and served as a defensive system. Climb Mount Hill within the fort and enjoy panoramic views of the city of Macau from its balustrades. As you explore, you'll also come across old cannons, providing a glimpse into the fort's historical significance.

Afterward, take a leisurely stroll to Senado Square , a vibrant public square situated in the heart of Macau. Visiting Senado Square immerses you in the city's unique culture and heritage. The colonial-style buildings that surround the square serve as reminders of Macau's Portuguese past, while the numerous shops and restaurants offer a delightful experience of the city's diverse culinary scene.

Make sure to pay a visit to the A-Ma Temple , the oldest temple in Macau, dedicated to the goddess Mazu, who is revered as the protector of seafarers. Explore the various buildings within the temple complex and learn about their religious significance.

If you're interested, you can also venture to the Venetian Macao , the largest casino in the world. Take some time to experience the opulence of the resort, try your luck at the tables or slots, or simply relax and soak in the luxurious atmosphere.

At the conclusion of your tour, your guide will accompany you to the cruise terminal, where you can board a ferry to return to Hong Kong. Travelers often bundle Hong Kong and Macau together because of their proximity to each other, just one-hour ferry ride apart. It is common for travelers staying in Hong Kong to visit Macau on a day trip. Likewise, those whose lodging is in Macau can easily do a day tour of Hong Kong. It is also not unusual for travelers to enter the region via Hong Kong and exit via Macau or the other way around.

Whether you’re holding a roundtrip ticket or a Hong Kong-Macau ticket, we might have a sample itinerary for you.

If you need help planning your Hong Kong-Macau trip, check out our travel guides below:

✅ HONG KONG TRAVEL GUIDE

✅ MACAU TRAVEL GUIDE

But first: Rent a pocket wi-fi!

tour hong kong macau vietravel

If you’re holding a roundtrip Hong Kong plane ticket, you might want to rent a pocket wifi. Being connected to the Internet all the time can make your travel worry-free. You can use it to access Google Maps, currency converters, share photos on your Facebook or Instagram, and search for more tips and recommendations. Please note that these pocket wifi services are only advisable if you have a roundtrip Hong Kong ticket. If you’re arriving via Hong Kong and leaving via Macau, this isn’t for you because you might not be able to return the device.

If you have a roundtrip HK ticket, reserve a pocket wifi as early as you can because only a limited number of devices are available per day.

As always, here are a few reminders that you must bear in mind should you decide to use the sample itineraries below.

  • All itineraries assume you’re staying in Tsim Sha Tsui area on the Kowloon side in Hong Kong or near the historic center in Macau. This is where most budget accommodations are located.
  • Book your tickets and tours with Klook. I have provided links where you can purchase tickets or book tours. These are affiliate links, many of which offer discounts. You’ll also help our blog in the process if you purchase tickets via Klook.
  • Cost estimates are only ballpark figures. Actual prices may vary. However, these are overestimates. We added some wiggle room or allowance to accommodate other additional incidental expenses.
  • Double check schedules. These are not exact times, especially train times. They’re meant to only give you an idea of how long you should spend doing an activity or staying in a spot. Actual schedule may be different.

And of course, if you want to change anything in the itinerary to match your flight sched or whatever preferences, feel free.

Full Itinerary Day by day

Ni Hao! Welcome to Hong Kong! If you need a transfer from Hong Kong International Airport to downtown, you can tell us your needs ahead. Our local guide is ready to pick you up at the arrival hall of the airport, and transfer you to hotel. The rest of today is to recover from long flight, or explore this vibrant and bustling metropolis on your own.

Evening Ideas: In this evening, take a walk through  Temple Street Night Market  which is the livest night market in Hong Kong. Whether you’re a fan of shopping or not, Temple Street is one place you’ll find everything from souvenirs to tiny trinkets and from clothes to footwear, bags and more. Browse different kinds of commodities and if you like, stop to sit and enjoy some delicious snacks. After the tour, get back to your hotel by yourselves.

Temple Street Night Market

In this morning, the local guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel or assigned place (like airport, railway station or metro station). Your amazing Hong Kong tour starts. Firstly, you’ll experience the quickest and most scenic way to reach up the highest point on Hong Kong Island (552 meters) -  Victoria Peak  by the legendary  Peak Tram  which has been operating for more than 130 years as one of the world’s oldest funicular railways. Ascend the Sky Terrace 428 observation deck to enjoy 360-degree spectacular panoramic views of the vibrant city - from the stunning skyline and Victoria Harbor to the tranquility of greenery landscape. If you like, enjoy a walk around and shoot some gorgeous photos.

Later, be driven far away from the bustling and hustling downtown area to “Hawaii of the Orient” -  Repulse Bay . This crescent-shaped stretch of sand is Hong Kong’s most famous beach with long coastline, soft sand, clean water and appropriate temperature and it is also home to some of its richest residents. Appreciate beautiful sea view and visit the Tin Hau Temple situated facing the sea. Continue your visit to  Aberdeen Fishing Village  where you will get an impressive insight of an old traditional fishing village to view the rows of old junks, sampans and private yachts. (Optional experience: if you like, try the sampan tour sailing on the peaceful harbor which would be a fun way to see parts of the floating village and their way of living.)

After the tour, you’ll be driven back to your hotel in downtown area. This afternoon and evening is free on your own. If you have time to continue exploring, you can take our suggested itinerary for further visit.

Suggested Afternoon & Evening Itinerary:

In this afternoon, pay a visit to  Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple . This Taoist temple is dedicated to a deified healer named Wong Tai Sin and it is said that when he was 15 an immortal taught Wong how to make a herbal potion that could cure all illness. This temple is famed for the many prayers answered “What you request is what you get” via a practice called kau chim. Enjoy the sincere atmosphere of praying and kau chim for good fortune. Later, move your steps to  Nan Lian Garden , an elegant Tang-style garden featuring a golden pagoda, a koi pond and a collection of bizarre rocks sourced from all over China. Enjoy your time in the beautiful  Chi Lin Nunnery  located close to the garden. Built in the style of Tang Dynasty, this Buddhist complex is a serene place with lotus ponds, bonsai tea plants, bougainvillea and silent nuns delivering offerings fruit and rice to Buddha or chanting behind intricately carved screens.

In the late evening, enjoy a light walk along  Avenue of Stars  situated on the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade right on the waterfront of Victoria Harbor. Admire stunning views of the Victoria Harbor and Hong Kong Island with its numerous skyscrapers. If time allows, catch the chance to watch “A Symphony of Lights” that is held every night at 20:00.

Victoria Peak Panoramic View

On this day, take a side trip to Macau . A former Portuguese colony dating back to year 1670, Macau is now famous for its range of casinos, gourmet and fine dining, and historical architecture.

First, take the jetfoil from Hong Kong to Macau for about 1 hour. After landing in Macau, first visit the historical sight of the Ruins of the St. Paul Cathedral , which is a gothic church constructed by Portuguese in 1562 and once the largest cathedral in Asia. Now, it is over 350 years old and a World Cultural Heritage Site symbolizing Macau. Observe the designing style and those carvings, patterns, characters, figures, etc., you will find the great combination and collision of the European elements in the Renaissance and the traditional oriental styles. Walk behind to see the only remaining Section of Old City Wall of the past Macau that was built by the Portuguesa to defend against enemies from other countries about 300 years ago. Then, walk about 10 minutes to visit the Senado Square (Largo do Senado) to appreciate the multiple century-old Portuguese styled architectures and enjoy its rich south European flavor and also the daily lifestyle of Macau people who walk along those leading lanes and operate their business.

Then, transfer to visit the 400 year-old A-Ma Temple to appreciate the featured traditional ancient Chinese constructions and the local culture of belief of the A-Ma and be touched by the sincere worship of various people from both Macau and China's mainland to her. After that, be escorted to the Border of Gate (Portas do Cerco) to know the history of the border battle between the Qing dynasty and the Kingdom of Portugal during the 1840s and its importance for people now in Macau and China's mainland. If interested, visit one of the casinos for which Macau is famous (minimum age 21).

After the tour, return to Macau wharf and transfer back to Hong Kong by jetfoil.

Note: 1. the jetfoil ticket fees from Hong Kong to Macau and from Macau back to Hong Kong, the transfer service between your hotel and Hong Kong wharf are included in your fare. 2. Meals of the day are all arranged on your own.

Check What our delighted customers are saying about our services

The tour you put together for us was great, we got to see the major sites. We really enjoyed gubei water town and wished we had more time there.

The ski day was luckily sunny and the kids had a lot of fun. It's their first time skiing so we didn't really know what to expect. It turned out well.

Driver Mr Hu and Guide Jamie were super patient with us. My kids sleep very late so we start everyday around 9am. They were very flexible and catered well to our needs.

Feedback as follows:

1. You are fast and patient to answer.

3. Willing to recommend your service.

4. Very impressive

I loved everything about the tour and everyone that helped me along the way.

Here's some comments and photos:

China Discovery provided exceptional service in customizing our trip to Guilin, Yangshuo, and Longsheng in late February 2024. April, my travel consultant, was responsive, helpful, and friendly, addressing all my questions and needs promptly. Our tour guide, Steven, was not only friendly but also adaptable to our needs and the unexpected weather conditions (there was a cold front during our trip) without the need for me to ask. His food recommendations for our meals at every restaurant were superb and we got to taste not only the local specialty but also what the restaurant is known for. Last but not least, Mr. Young, our driver, ensured our safety with his steady driving.

Guilin Tour

Dear Ms. Jiang,

We are so pleased with your China tour and are so thankful for all your help.

All the tour guides and drivers have been excellent and we felt very well taken care off.

We felt very safe and therefore could enjoy the tour without any worries.

Not only did we see a lot we also learned a lot about China, the country, the people, etc.

I think it is of great benefit to participate in this kind of a tour, first of all we did not have to share the tour guide with other persons, so we could ask all the questions that came to mind. Also that there was no shopping as a part of the tour was a plus.

Thanks again for a wonderful experience

How to Plan a 1-Day Trip from Hong Kong to Macau

How to Plan a 1-Day Trip from Hong Kong to Macau

Just an hour away, but quite different from Hong Kong, is Macau : the mega-resort and casino center that also has interesting historical sights.

It is popular to travel from Hong Kong to Macau. In this article, you will find out how to travel to Macau from Hong Kong and what to see in Macau.

How to Get from Hong Kong to Macau

From Hong Kong to Macau, there are three modes of transportation: sea, land, and air. We suggest that you travel to Macau by ferry, which is the most convenient and economical.

By ferry (most recommended): It takes about 1 hour by boat from Hong Kong to Macau. The one-way fare is about 170KD. The fare for night ferries or holidays will be slightly more expensive.

By bridge (a new and comfortable way): Take the bus over the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge from Hong Kong port to Macau in just 40 minutes.

By helicopter (the coolest): It takes only 15 minutes to take a direct flight from Hong Kong to Macau, however the price is 4,300 HKD one way.

Hong Kong to Macau by Ferry

Hong kong ferry terminals.

1. Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal (preferred, most frequent ferries)

Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal is near the IFC Towers in the Shun Tak Centre on Hong Kong Island. You can take the subway and get off at Shueng Wan Station. During the daytime, there is a boat every 15 minutes.

2. China Ferry Terminal (recommended, good location)

China Ferry Terminal is in Tsim Sha Tsui. It is about a kilometer north of the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry. You could walk to it through Harbour City Mall, or just take a taxi to 33 Canton Road.

3. Sky Pier at the Hong Kong International Airport (for transiting tourists only)

The terminal is located next to the Hong Kong airport. If you plan to take a boat directly from Hong Kong airport to Macau, you can choose to depart from this terminal.

4. Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal (Generally not recommended, inconvenient location)

This terminal is located in the New Territories, which is not popular for tourists. There are less than 10 ferries traveling between Hong Kong and Macau every day. This terminal is only practical if you are staying nearby.

Macau Ferry Terminals

It doesn't matter which port to go to Macau because Macau is not big. No matter which terminal you arrive at, there are free shuttle buses that can deliver you to any hotel or casino.

1. Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal (close to downtown Macau)

Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal, also known as the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, is the main northern terminal closest to San Ma Lo, architectural attractions, and about 23 mainly smaller casinos.

You can take Bus 3 from San Ma Lo to the Macau Ferry Terminal in about 10 minutes for 2.5 HKD.

2. Taipa Terminal (close to casinos, hotels, airports)

Taipa Terminal is to the south, closest to the Cotai Strip area with the biggest casinos such as the Venetian, the City of Dreams across the street, and the Macau International Airport.

To go to the Taipa Terminal, take the Cotai Jet from any of the three Hong Kong terminals. There are late night returns (at 1 AM) from the Cotai Terminal to the Hong Kong Macau Terminal.

Ferry Tickets: Costs and Where to Buy Them

Ferry prices are higher in the evening and highest at night, and higher at weekends and holidays.

  • For economy class, the prices are from 171 to 211 HKD for a single trip.
  • For superior/first class, the prices are from 346 to 391 HKD for a single trip.

You can buy ferry tickets at every ferry terminal as well as online. Usually, it is no problem to buy tickets on the spot except on some festival days. If you would like to skip long lines, you'd better arrive early or buy tickets online.

Getting from Hong Kong to Macau by Bridge

The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, the longest sea-crossing in the world, connects the cities of Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macau. This crossing is open 24 hours.

There are shuttle buses going from Hong Kong to Macau at all hours, they cost 65 HKD normally (70 HKD at night: 12-6 AM). The buses take around 45 minutes.

In Hong Kong, there are direct shuttle buses starting from Hong Kong Airport, Tsim Sha Tsui and Central to Macau via the bridge.

Planning a Macau Day Trip

Macau's main draw for tourists are the big casinos and hotels. It is the new gambling resort capital of the world with 5 of the world's 10 largest casino resorts. But there are also old Portuguese sites to see. UNESCO World Heritage sites San Ma Lo and Guia Fortress are popular with tourists. See the Top 6 Things to Do in Macau .

The St. Paul's Ruins

The ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral , which was built in 1580, are now the most representative landmark in Macau. They combine the style of European Renaissance and Oriental architecture, reflecting a blend of Eastern and Western culture.

Monte Fortress

Monte Fortress was built in 1627. The fortress, and the Macau Museum in it, is probably the best place to go to learn about Macau's history and culture. Museum tickets cost 15 HKD.

Senado Square

Until 1999 Macau was a Portuguese colony. Senado Square was an old Portuguese square. Old pastel colored buildings line the sides, and a church is at the back. It and about 20 other old buildings and forts are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Walking around the square, you will feel like you are in Europe, with such a beautiful view and ambience. You can see so many shops selling Macau snacks like Portuguese egg tarts, puddings, and pork sandwiches.

The A-Ma Temple

The A-Ma Temple is a symbol of Macau's Mazu culture. With a history of over 500 years, it is one of the oldest temples in the city as well as a World Heritage attraction.

The A-Ma Temple was one of the first places the Portuguese saw when they arrived in 14th and 15th centuries and it still functions as a spiritual beacon in Macau.

The Venetian Macao

The Venetian Macao is a super large resort with the theme of Venetian waters, with 3,000 luxury suites, more than 30 restaurants, more than 330 retail stores, 4 outdoor swimming pools, and an 18-hole rooftop golf course. It is one of the largest casinos in the world, with no less than 640 gaming tables and 1,760 slot machines.

At the same time, it is also a must-see for tourists and one of the most well-known places in Macau.

Grand Lisboa

The building of the Grand Lisboa is like a giant golden lotus flower. It is the landmark of Macau and is very eye-catching. There are not only luxurious suites, but also Michelin restaurants, outdoor pools, and spas.

Wynn Palace

It is owned by the world gambling king, Alan Wynn. It is said that this resort costed 4 billion USD and attracts a lot of tourists not only for its luxurious outside, but even the decoration inside.

Getting to the casinos in Macau is easy. Free casino buses line up at both ferry terminals, and pretty women representing their hotels and casinos stand and hand out coupons and information. Just get on the bus you want for free. You can easily get lost in the biggest casinos eating, shopping, and seeing the shows.

If you have two days in Macau, check How to Get the Most out of Macau in 2 Days .

More Things You Should Know

1. Most nationalities don't need a visa to travel to Macau. You'll need your passport to travel between Hong Kong and Macau. Foreign tourists to Hong Kong generally have no problem entering Macau with a free short-term stamp on their passport. Check whether you need a visa or not .

2. Hong Kong dollars can be used in Macau. You don't need to exchange them.

3. If you easily get seasick on ferries, take some medicine or use seasickness band. It takes about one hour by ferry at a speed of 35-50 knots.

Macao has gone from sleepy fishing villages to Portuguese colony to flashy Vegas-style casino hub (it’s the only place to legally gamble in China). But you don’t need to be a high-roller to appreciate a day trip or weekend getaway to the other SAR.

It only takes about an hour to get from Hong Kong to Macao, where you’ll find a rich melting-pot history, distinctive cuisine, a growing arts and entertainment scene and even sandy beaches. Read on for tips on how to easily transit by ferry or bus, plus an overview of where to go and what things to do once you’ve arrived.

Travelling to Macao by ferry

To travel from the centre of Hong Kong to Macao, take a ferry ride from either the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan or the Kowloon China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui.

There are two high-speed ferry operators that take passengers to different parts of Macao in about one hour. Ferries operated by  TurboJet  from Sheung Wan and Tsim Sha Tsui sail to and from the Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal on the Macao Peninsula every 15 minutes.  Cotai Water Jet  sails to and from the Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal on the island of Taipa every 30 minutes.

TurboJet also operates six services a day from the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier in the New Territories to Macau Outer Harbour, and five return journeys.

For those flying into Hong Kong International Airport, a select number of ferries depart for the Macao Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal each week. Simply purchase your flight and ferry ticket to Macao in one single booking through our website.* Your baggage will be checked through to your final destination.

Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

Travelling to Macao by bus

Travellers used to rely primarily on ferry services to move between the two cities, which made the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) a game-changer when it opened in late 2018.

Connecting passengers between Hong Kong and Macao as well as the city of Zhuhai on the Chinese mainland, the HZMB is the world’s longest sea crossing by bridge and tunnel, spanning 55 kilometres. Operating 24 hours a day, the HZMB takes just 45 minutes to travel across.

There is a  shuttle bus  connecting the cities, with tickets sold in the departure hall of the Passenger Clearance Buildings in each of the three locations. The Hong Kong departure hall can be reached by public bus or taxi from the city and the airport. Detailed transport information is available on the  HZMB website .

Transfer coaches also run between Hong Kong International Airport’s SkyPier terminal to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge terminal in Macao. Book your flight and coach tickets through an agent, and your tickets will be combined into a single booking (for selected routes)*. Your bags will also automatically be checked through to your final destination.

Travellers also have the option to take a privately run coach or car for direct travel from within Hong Kong.  Trans Island  and  One Bus  are two such operators, which offer advance ticket bookings online.

Exploring Macao’s three main areas

Macao consists of the historic peninsula, the islands of Taipa and Coloane and Cotai – each with their own characteristics and charms. Here’s a quick primer.

Ruins of St Paul’s

Macao Peninsula

This area is known as ‘old’ Macao for its cluster of historic sites: Senado Square; the  Ruins of St Paul’s  dating back to the 17th century; and  Guia Fortress , which affords sweeping views of the city.

Portuguese restaurant

Taipa and Coloane

Both islands are excellent foodie destinations and reflect a more traditional, laid-back side of Macao. Located in Taipa Village is  Tai Lei Loi Kei , a cafe that’s said to have invented the iconic Macanese pork chop bun.  Old Taipa Tavern , a casual neighbourhood gastropub, can be found there as well.

Coloane, in Macao’s sleepy southern tip, is full of pastel colonial buildings, cobblestone streets and beaches. It’s also a popular destination for al fresco meals at  Fernando ’s , which puts a Macanese spin on Portuguese cuisine, and for egg tarts made fresh at the original branch of the legendary  Lord Stow’s Bakery .

Macao's Cotai Strip

Credit: Macao's Cotai Strip

This is a newer part of Macao, created from reclaimed land that connects Taipa (to the north) and Coloane (to the south). Its centrepiece is the glitzy Cotai Strip, whose lineup of casino and hotel complexes – with upscale shopping, dining and entertainment – deliver on Macao’s reputation as the ‘Las Vegas of Asia.’

The House of Dancing Water

What to do in Macao

Macao counts scores of  world-class restaurants  such as the Michelin-starred Alain Ducasse at Morpheus and Cantonese fine-dining spot Jade Dragon. There’s a growing contemporary art scene as well as blockbuster live shows like the long-running  The House of Dancing Water ,  called ‘the world’s largest water extravaganza’.

For more detailed recommendations, consult our roundup of  20 old and new reasons to visit Macao .

Morpheus

Where to stay in Macao

Major hotels include  MGM Cotai , the Hollywood-themed  Studio City , the French-inspired  Parisian Macao  and the Zaha Hadid-designed  Morpheus  (above left). For something more old-school, head south to  Pousada de Coloane  (above right), a charming Portuguese colonial-style resort that was formerly home to a tycoon.

Senado Square

What to know before you go

  • Keep your passport on hand, as there are immigration and customs checkpoints between the two cities.
  • Macao’s currency is the pataca, but Hong Kong dollars are also widely accepted at an equivalent rate. However, patacas cannot be used in Hong Kong.
  • The official languages of the city are Cantonese and Portuguese; Mandarin and English are also commonly spoken.
  • Many hotels run free shuttles to and from the ferry terminals throughout the day, which allows you to skip taxi queues.
  • It’s common practice for taxi drivers to round up the fare, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself slightly short-changed.
  • Many of Cotai’s hotels and casinos are linked through massive complexes that can take a long time to navigate, so give yourself plenty of time to wander.
  • Macao launched its light-rail transit system in December 2019. The inaugural Taipa Line’s 11 stops include the airport, ferry terminal and Cotai West.

*If you’re departing from Taiwan China, you’ll need to book your flight ticket with us and your ferry ticket or coach transfer ticket via the individual operator. Before dropping your bags at your departing airport, please let us know that you’ve purchased tickets separately and we’ll make the necessary arrangements.

For nationals who do not have exemption or those looking to obtain other types of visas (work, student, etc.), please refer to the Hong Kong Immigration website for details.

Please note visas are required to enter Mainland China. While it is possible to apply for one while in Hong Kong (takes up to 5 working days), we strongly recommend obtaining your visa in advance in your country of residence.

Baggage carried on board is restricted to exceed 56cmx36cmx26cm.

Hong Kong’s climate is subtropical, with hot, humid summers that can reach temperatures of 95 F/35 C and humidity close to 100%. From May – October, typhoons with strong winds may occasionally occur. From October, temperatures drop to the cool 60s F/20s C. The coldest time of year is December-February. Clear, sunny days make October-November the best time to visit.

Hong Kong’s subtropical climate means you won’t be needing the winter woollies for most of the year. Loose-fitting cotton clothing generally fits the bill. The exception is from mid-December to February, when the mercury might fall to a mild 10 o C (50 o F). But even in the summer, it pays to bring along a light sweater – air-conditioning in most restaurants and cinemas is often turned up high. Rain showers are often during the rainy season (around May to September), so also be sure to pack a light waterproof jacket.

Hong Kong thrives on efficient telecommunications. Mobile phone is widely used and some hotels featured in our Hong Kong tours provide free use of mobile phones during guests' stay.

International Direct Dialing is available in all hotels. Prepaid telephone cards are available in post offices, hotels and supermarkets for public phones. The country code for Hong Kong is (852).

Wifi is widely available throughout as well as hotels included in your Hong Kong vacation package, though charges may apply.

Postage is inexpensive and the service is reliable.

Legal tender is the Hong Kong dollar (HK$). There are 100 cents in a dollar. Coins, issued by the government, are bronze-colored for 10 cents, 20 cents and 50 cents; silver-colored for HK$1, HK$2, and HK$5; Notes have denominations of HK$10, HK$20, HK$50, HK$100, HK$500, and HK$1,000. The exchange rate is approximately HK$7.8 to the US dollar.

Major banks are open from 9am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 12:30pm on Saturday. They close on Sundays and public holidays. Automated teller machines (ATMs) can be found almost everywhere and some HSBC “Electronic Money” machines provide 24-hour cash withdrawal (HK$) facilities for Visa and MasterCard holders. American Express cardholders have access to Jetco ATMs and can withdraw local currency and travelers’ checks at the Express Cash ATMs in town.

Major credit cards are widely accepted in shops and restaurants throughout Hong Kong.

According to related laws and regulations, the luggage of inbound and outbound passengers must come under customs supervision and control.

Voltage in Hong Kong is 220 volts, but most portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptop computers do not require a electrical converter.

Electrical appliances will require an adapter that can change the shape of the plug prongs. Hotels featured in our Hong Kong tour packages provide hair dryers and as well other amenities expected in 4 and 5-star hotels.

Hong Kong is known as one of the great culinary capitals of the world. There is plenty of local and international cuisines to sample during your stay.

Tap water in Hong Kong is NOT potable, but bottled mineral water is available everywhere. Your hotel will also provide several bottles each day.

No special vaccinations are required.  Upon arrival and departure in Hong Kong, passengers are required to complete a health declaration form provided to (including transit passengers) at the airport, ports and border points. You will also have your temperature taken when you pass through immigration. These measures enable visitors to have an enjoyable and healthy stay in Hong Kong. You can also contact the Center for Disease Control (C.D.C.) 404-639-3534 for updated information.

The vast majority of our Hong Kong tours are private with airport transfers by private car and sightseeing via either public transportation (most tours) or by private car (luxury tour products). For airport transfers without guides, suggest tipping the driver about HK$100 (~ US$12) each way. For half day sightseeing via public transport, you may tip the guide between HK200 (~ US$25) (based on 2 passengers). If there is a private car involved, you may tip the driver around HK$100 (~ US$12). Of course, you may adjust these tipping guidelines up or down depending on the level of service you received.

Hong Kong is geographically compact and boasts one of the world’s most efficient, safe, affordable and frequent public transport systems. Whether by taxi, ferry, rail, bus or tram, you can get around easily and catch wonderful glimpses of the city along the way. The system covers extension areas of Hong Kong with signs in English and Chinese.

Your Hong Kong tour with us includes airport transfers by private car upon arrival and departure. Most of our Hong Kong vacation packages feature the use of public transportation during sightseeing tours. This is a great way to immerse in the city's modern day culture as well as sampling the unique transport methods such as ferry, subway, tramway and trams.

Lastly, Hong Kong boasts a robust transportation network between Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China via highway, high speed trains and hydro-foil (high speed ferry).
